By Julie Ross he Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad (MSHVFAS) is now closer to its goal of purchasing a new ambulance, thanks to a Cycle For Wheels Spin-A-Thon fundraising event held on May 20.

The event, which raised approximately $12,500, was sponsored by and held at the YB Fitness gym/physical fitness center in Short Hills.

About 50 individuals, whose ages “ranged from early teens to probably late

70s,” signed up to participate in the fundraiser, said Bryan Daubert, MSHVFAS’ vice president. Participants took one of three 45-minute spinning classes, collecting donations from family members, friends, coworkers, and others in exchange for doing so. “We also had people who didn’t want to or couldn’t take part in the class, and donated directly rather than sponsoring someone.”

The MSHVFAS is a non-profit entity, with donations its only source of income continued on page 6

“Fleet Week” Gives Civilians Inside Look At The Armed Forces

By Ben Bograd n May 25, people were greeted at 10 a.m. to the whirring of propellers, as members of the United States Marines landed two helicopters in the open field behind Millburn High School.

Students watched in awe as the immense helicopters descended. The event was part of Fleet Week, a weeklong outreach program allowing citizens to get an up close look at the soldiers and vehicles who bear the Stars and Stripes.

After the helicopters landed, senior Kate Parker-Lentz kicked off the event with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem. Hundreds of students, teachers, police officers, and other citizens then headed out to the field to enjoy a host of activities led by the troops from the New River Air Station near Jacksonville, N.C. Those in attendance could

don a Marine’s vest, look through the sight of a rifle, and try their hand at a pull-up bar, winning prizes for completing different levels of the tiring exercise.

The main attraction was the helicopters themselves. People were treated to an inside look, getting on board to revel in the sophisticated array of buttons, screens, and dials that control the aircraft. Sitting in the helicopter’s cockpit, one could imagine flying thousands of miles away, wind whipping through the air above the deafening sound of the rotor blades.

Though exhilarating as it was to immerse oneself in the environment of a soldier, it was more riveting to talk to the Marines who live this reality every day.

Millburn Therapist Seeks To Empower Community

By Anya Bochman ired of seeing a disconnect between what her young clients experience and what the schools and parents perceive, child and adolescent psychotherapist Nancy Kislin sought a communication bridge in Millburn’s changing community.

Kislin, who has lived and practiced in Millburn for the past 30 years, and is also a member of the township’s Municipal Alliance Committee, has spent decades observing children and adolescents.

“Empower Hour” is one part of Kislin’s outreach for the Millburn Municipal Alliance Committee’s Task Force. As per its mission statement, the force was created “to bring together members of the community who are committed to the mental and physical safety of … children.” Its goal is to “discuss the current epidemic of drugs, alcohol, vaping, and mental health issues plaguing [the] community and ultimately create an action plan to assist in providing education, resources, guidance and support.”

This is what Kislin set out to do with the first meeting of Empower Hour on April 14. Mindful of the township’s changing demographics – in recent years, Millburn and Short Hills

have accommodated growing populations of East and South Asian-Americans – she reached out to representatives of the local Chinese, Indian and Korean associations, as well as several rabbis. The first Empower Hour was held on April 17 at the Millburn Education Center, and was co-sponsored by the Alcohol/Drug and Mental Health Task Force, the Millburn/Short Hills Chinese Association, the Indian American Association and the Korean Association.

“For real change to happen, I went to my grassroots upbringing,” Kislin said. “The goal was to bring a group of people together, and start a conversation.”

The meeting, which focused on communication with children in a climate of fear in the wake of recent school shootings, was a resounding success.

At the very end, the topic of growing diversity in the community was brought up. With school officials present, the parents began a healthy and productive conversation about their varying experiences.

The impromptu conversation led to Empower Hour’s next meeting on May 14, which was a panel discussion on diversity in the community, appropriately titled “Talking To Your Children About Diversity

In Our Community.” For Kislin, the purpose was “finding common ground” when it came to raising empathetic and culturally sensitive children. What followed was what the thera-

pist described as “two hours of amazing conversation about diversity.”

Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. to feel safe,” Kislin said. “And currently, with social media devices, kids are paying a high price for their self-created isolation.”

The exact date of the next Empower Hour is not yet certain, though Kislin aims for September.

“That’s kind of ‘old school,’ and we’re definitely going to be shirting more to events to raise money,” said Elyse Bell, an auxiliary member of the squad who handles its marketing and public relations activities.

Daubert and Bell noted that in addition to raising money to help purchase the new ambulance, the Spin-A-Thon attracted the attention of a few potential new squad members.

MSHVFAS presently has 50 to 60 active members, as well as some college student members who serve shifts when they are home from school on break.

All squad members are trained and certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs); MSHVFAS provides the state-mandated EMT training and hosts EMT training sessions twice each year.

“Around three years ago, we were at a low with membership,” Daubert stated. “Now we have a lot of people interested. We are going to keep recruiting. Events like the Spin-AThon definitely help to get the word out.”

What’s more, both Daubert and Bell said the Spin-A-Thon has significantly increased community awareness about MSHVFAS and how it serves the Millburn-Short Hills community. Staffed by volunteers only and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the squad provides assistance to residents and visitors at no charge and has been doing so since answering its first call on June 14, 1958.

Schools Get Some New Trees

T

he Millburn Township Green Schools Team is excited to announce that 18 gorgeous Colorado Blue Spruce trees have been donated by the Downtown Millburn Development Alliance to the Millburn Township Schools.

These trees were originally installed by the DMDA in planters throughout the town to enhance the outdoor atmosphere and “decor” of downtown Millburn. This is a great example of collaboration between the township and the schools, not to mention an awesome “green” solution to finding a happy home for these trees!

Based on school requests, the high school and middle

school each received four and Washington, Hartshorn, Glenwood, Wyoming and Deerfield each received two. Jim Mancini of Mancini Landscaping Associates in Warren generously donated his time, labor and crew to install 12 of the trees recently. These “babies” are small now but are expected to grow to heights of 30 feet tall and will grace the schools for decades to come!

Decks And Pools Splash Summer With Fun

By Ricki Demarest t’s always fun to enjoy family and friends during special get togethers at home, but, in the summertime, enjoying the sun by the side of the pool or grilling on the deck make those times even better.

Now is the time for homeowners to make sure those festive outdoor spaces are ready for fun times to carry on before the leaves begin to fall.

Approximately 50 million American homes have outdoor decks, according to the North American Deck and Railing Association. It’s estimated that about half of them have safety issues. Before the power washer and the planters come out, it’s vital to check for signs of wear such as cracks in decking material, weakened joists, rotted wood and loose railings. Insect invasions from carpenter ants, termites and bees can wreak havoc as well.

Older decks may not be up to present construction codes either. Building codes are updated about every three years, and it’s a good idea to check whether the deck’s guardrails, handrails, lighting, stairs, and landings meet current safety

standards. Mold, mildew, and even wooden slat replacement can usually be handled by a homeowner or contractor.

If the hurdles of maintenance and replacement have been cleared, its time to get down to the nitty gritty of deck cleaning.

Nick O’Donnell, the manager at Homecraft Rental Center in Ledgewood, said customers can usually count on using a pressure washer to initiate deck cleanup.

“People have to pressure wash first, then let it dry for a couple days,” he said. “Then they have to sand the surface and stain it right away,” to create a weather proof and esthetically pleasing surface. “You have a 90 per cent chance of sanding. You have to do that before you stain – it eliminates peeling.”

Although O’Donnell and his staff make sure to explain how the equipment works, he said most people don’t pay attention. It doesn’t matter.

Mt. Olive Woman Directs Dress For Success With More Partnerships And Fundraisers

By Cheryl Conway ith more partnerships and fundraisers, the new director of Dress For Success Northern N.J. hopes to grow the non-profit to support a greater number of women seeking jobs and confidence to succeed in the workforce.

Kimberly Iozzi, 45, of Budd Lake began on April 30 in her new role as executive director of Dress For Success Northern N.J. covering 10 counties throughout the state.

As the former executive director of the Newton Housing Authority for 15 years, Iozzi brings years of experience in government and nonprofit management, dedicating her entire career to empowering low and moderate-income families achieve economic self-sufficiency, personal development and growth.

When she saw the position open for Dress For Success advertised through the Center For Nonprofits, Iozzi says she jumped at the opportunity.

“I was looking for a change,” she says, as she describes her passion for helping women succeed in the workforce.

Another program, Steps For Success offers a 10-week job ready boot camp for unemployed women to break down barriers and provide an extra push to assist a woman in getting a job.

“The women come from all different backgrounds,” says Iozzi, not just those who are disadvantaged. Some are stayat-home moms trying to get back into the workforce, others are first time clients trying to enter the workforce.

Other programs include mentoring, technology skills, time management and budgeting and Foundation For Success in which women are provided tips on how to keep their employment.

A Professional Women’s Group is also offered to provide monthly networking meetings featuring speakers to discuss professional issues, personal growth, budgeting and balancing.

The Mobile is another program in which a van visits agencies by appointment and operates as a boutique with volunteer stylists on board to play dress up with suits and

help women build confidence.

“Its largest suiting was for 70 people,” notes Iozzi. Women are given a referral sheet, are sized and pick their outfits from colors of suits and shoe styles from heels to flats, and also receive a one hour training session.

“It’s amazing to see the transformation that happens,” says Iozzi. The Mobile “brings suits to them, does training,” covering interview tips, how to engage, how to shake hands, what questions to ask.

With the main boutique at the Madison Community House in Madison, Iozzi hopes to expand to include satellite offices in each of the 10 counties “so people can donate, get clothing and training,” closer to where they live.

Bridge to Success is another program in which clients can engage in a bimonthly job search after they go through steps of training, explains Iozzi.

“This bridge helps them with their one on one to give them the tools,” she says, to succeed.

Since women are served for free, Iozzi stresses it is “so important to have grants and donations.”

While the majority of the women are referred to Dress For Success by partnering agencies, the organization will

“We need more referral agencies to refer clients to us,” says Iozzi, “partnerships from every level. We are looking for community ambassadors” to hold suit drives for suits, shoes, handbags and jewelry, “whatever makes up a professional.

“We need to catch up with our donations so we can grow moving forward,” says Iozzi.

With “only four of us on staff we definitely need support.”

Dress For Success recently held its largest fundraiser with its gala in May at the Park Savoy in Florham Park. She plans to host the organization’s first fashion show in the spring of 2019. On October 19 she is looking for a venue to recognize the first suiting ever held

In her role for just two months so far, Iozzi says “I love it. Every day is just a fulfillment; you are making a difference in someone’s life. We are changing lives. She’s now able to support her family. We are giving women confidence, if they lost it along the way. Everybody has a story. We are building them up, giving them the tools they need to be successful.

“You can’t buy that satisfaction or making a true difference in someone’s life. I love my job.

I’m at a point to make a real difference and this is definitely it.”

“We are here and we need help,” she concludes. “If peo-

The National Drinking Water Advisory Council found around 7.3 million lead service lines currently deliver water to customers. Homeowners can request testing through their local water supplier or conduct certified home tests.
