Millburn Fire Department Introduces New Fire Extinguisher Training Program

by Jason Cohen he Millburn Fire Department recently released a new training program, using state-of-the-art technology, to train local businesses and residents on the safe and effective use of a fire extinguisher.

The fire department purchased a Live Fire-Extinguisher Training System, which uses propane to create a real, controlled fire. The fire behaves realistically in response to the system’s prop

fire extinguishers, which spray water and compressed air.

Participants in the training are taught the “PASS” method of using a fire extinguisher — pull the pin, aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, squeeze the lever and sweep from side to side.

The training program will also reinforce what actions should be taken before and after the fire is contained.

“We know that people are going to use a fire extinguisher if they see a fire, but we want them to do it safely and know the limitations of a fire extinguisher,” Brenner said. “First of all, a fire extinguisher only controls a fire it does not extinguish a fire. When a fire starts, especially in a building such as a home or a business there are many areas a fire can get into such as wall outlets, pipe chases, and other hidden areas.”

Brenner stressed that when using an extinguisher, it is imperative that someone does not get between the fire and a means of egress. Also, before using an extinguisher there are three A’s that one needs to know. The first A is activate the fire alarm or call 9-11 to report the fire. The second A is get everyone out of the area.

The third is only after the first two are taken care of before one can attempt to control a fire with an extinguisher.

“Though fire extinguishers are a regular fixture in businesses and most homes, not everyone understands the proper protocols to follow in a fire emergency,” Brenner said. “It’s important that people know exactly what to do both before and after using a fire extinguisher, as well as how to operate the device properly.”

However, Brenner said it is important to always contact emergency responders even if a fire appears to have been put out.

“We have technology and training that can detect whether fires are continuing to burn inside walls and other unseen areas,” he said.

Beginning Of School Year Marks Big Changes In Millburn District

By Ben Bograd s students strap on their backpacks and head back to school, they will notice big changes from the places they left in June.

The biggest change of all will be for rising fifth-graders, who will be heading to the brand new Washington School, a new public school dedicated solely to fifth graders. The school is tucked away behind the high school on Spring Street and has the neighborhood feel of the district’s elementary schools. However, its proximity to the high school also affords its students a glance at what is to come.

The school’s newly appointed principal is Peter Mercurio, who most recently worked as the principal at the Wyoming School. Mercurio is excited about the unique opportunities the environment will present for students.

“This creates more opportunities for students because we will have more resources focus-

ing solely on one grade level,” Mercurio said. “Also, our professional dialogue and development is focused solely on this age group.”

Roughly two-thirds of the school’s teachers have taught fifth grade at the various elementary schools around the district. One of the major changes from the previous fifth-grade experience pertains to class size.

Washington School classes will often consist of 24-25 students.

However, Mercurio is not concerned about the larger classes.

“The rooms are quite large to handle the class size,” he said.

While the Washington School’s opening is one of the district’s biggest changes in recent memory, students at all schools will reap the benefits of the summer’s changes. Glenwood and Wyoming have undergone bathroom renovations; Deerfield, South Mountain, and Hartshorn have all had more air conditioning installed. Each of the district’s five elementary

schools will also be given a 3-D printer. A wheelchair lift is being added by the high school’s auditorium entrance, making the school’s second floor directly accessible from the outside.

Whether they are walking

through the front doors of the Washington School, the various elementary schools, or the auditorium doors of the high school, students can look forward to a great year in an exciting, new learning environment.

Short Hill’s New Eyes Gets Facelift From Grant

By Jason Cohen he building of a non-profit organization in Short Hills recently received a facelift after it was the recipient of a grant from Investors Bank for more than $3,000.

New Eyes for the Needy, which was founded in 1932, has resided at 549 Millburn Ave., in Short Hills since 1963. In May, it was awarded $3,180 from Investors Bank, which helped pay for numerous repairs to the exterior of the building.

Now, the facility boasts new signage, fresh paint and a new roof.

“Investors understands that it’s very hard to cover all our costs,” said Executive Director of New Eyes Jean Gajano. “Not only is it for New Eyes, but also it’s a better looking building in Short Hills. We’re not an eyesore anymore.”

Gajano explained that the facility was in poor shape. The paint was peeling, the roof was in need of repair and the signage in front was vandalized two years ago.

According to Gajano, the organization has a good relationship with Investors Bank and once she told them about the vandalism and need for repairs, it was eager to help. In the past, Investors has given them mon-

ey to help purchase glasses for people in New Jersey and New York and for new computer equipment in the building.

Gajano noted that New Eyes did not want to take money earmarked for glasses and use it for repairs.

“It really makes a difference when you have something that’s not worn down and shoddy looking,” she said.

New Eyes purchases new prescription eyeglasses through a voucher program for children and adults in the United States who cannot afford glasses on their own. It also accepts, recycles and distributes donated glasses for poor people overseas.

In 2015-2016, New Eyes helped 9,910 U.S. residents in need and recycled 248,945 glasses in 41 developing countries. In fact, 90 percent of the world’s vision impaired live in low income settings and 30 percent of the children worldwide experience uncorrected vision problems.

Kim Kaminski, Investors Bank assistant vice president and Millburn branch manager, said it was an easy choice to help New Eyes and hopes to continue to work with it in the future.

Do Two Things In Millburn To Prepare For Emergencies And Sign Up For Alerts

Millburn Township has taken some measures recently to provide the most useful information to its residents. On its town website, individuals, groups or agencies can sign up for a free program called Do1Thing, a nonprofit that provides monthly tips on how to be prepared in certain situations.

Township officials also recently switched its alert system to a more efficient system as a means to notify residents of any emergencies. The former system, called Code Red, has been replaced by Swift Reach.

“The new system has more features in an alert system,” says Jimmy Homsi, assistant business administrator of Millburn Twp. for the past year.

Homsi has been advertising in the township to inform residents in Millburn and Short Hills to enroll in the new alert system so they can be notified of different situations such as hazardous weather, gas utility or water main breaks and road closures.

He says his goal is to get 100 percent of the residents signed up.

To enroll in the alert system, send a text, “Swift 911,” to 99538. The user will get a reply text back to a link with information on how to make an account, download the free app to a cell phone or access to the website.

Categories will pop up to allow the user to select from different options like to sign up for all alerts or specify for particular alerts, such as weather or traffic only.

For individuals without texting ability, go to www.twp. millburn.nj.us, and find the link to sign onto Swift; or go to the Millburn Twp. Fire Department to sign up.

Homsi says the Office of Emergency Management through the township fire department is managing the program by handling the administrative end like

sending alerts to residents enrolled in Swift Reach.

He also wants to make it clear that any 911 emergencies should be handled by calling 911 or police department.

Residents can also sign up to the Do1Thing program through the township website.

Do1Thing is a nonprofit preparedness program that invites communities to join in order to help people become more prepared to handle emergencies. The idea is to do one thing each month so when there is an emergency, steps have hopefully already been taken for the situation at hand.

Millburn posts updates on its town website regularly with the monthly tips.

“We share their information and provide additional information to be prepared for whatever may happen for emergencies,” says Homis.

As stated on the district’s website: “Being prepared for disasters and emergencies can seem like a big job. Many people don’t know where to start, so they never start at all. With Do1Thing you can take small steps that make a big difference in an emergency. Be sure to sign up for their free program to help get started on being prepared!”

Do1Thing is “a 12-month program that makes it easy for you to prepare yourself, your family, and your community for emergencies or disasters.”

The goal for September on the Do1Thing Site is to “Make sure everyone in your household can receive, understand, and act on information received in an emergency.”

The idea is to take “safe action if someone has special needs; think about what they need,” Homsi explains.

“Getting correct information during an emergency is the key to taking safe action. Someone in your household may not be able to receive, understand, or act on emergency information. continued on page 7

pecial guests will visit the Millburn Library this fall to shed light on a variety of topics, from financial fraud to Chinese tea and World War II history.

Rosie the Riveter, the famous World War II poster woman, is the subject of a great deal of widely accepted theories. On Sept. 25, Dr. James Kimble, of the Seton Hall University College of Communications and the Arts, will explore the myths that have developed around the

famous “We Can Do It!” poster, and discuss his quest to find the elusive woman behind the timeless image.

On Oct. 9, Ozzie Niazi, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, will help provide information needed to “Outsmart the Scammers.” He will discuss how to spot certain red flags that may indicate a fraudulent encounter, resources that may be used in the event of being targeted, and steps that can be taken now to help protect people from fraud.

Boy Scouts Propose Local Street Be Named To Honor Late Scoutmaster

By Jason Cohen embers of a local Boy Scout Troop in Millburn spoke to the Millburn Township Committee last month about why a new street in town should be named after the troop’s longtime scoutmaster Ken Fineran.

The street is part of a new Mack-Cali complex located at 150 John F. Kennedy Parkway in Short Hills.

Fineran, who served as scoutmaster of Troop 17 from 1979 to 2015 and was a 45-year resident of Millburn, passed away Aug. 9, 2016, after a battle with cancer.

While he never had any kids, his children were the Boy Scouts.

“He left behind a long legacy of young men that he inspired over the years,” said Troop 17 Scoutmaster Daniel Cannon.

“He led by example and people just wanted to follow him.”

The Township Committee asked the school district to solicit student ideas for the street and each student was given a survey, where they wrote who or what they wanted to name the road after and how it was significant to Millburn. According to Cannon, Fineran received 56 percent of the votes.

As that recommendation received the largest number of

student suggestions, it was the name the Millburn Superintendent Christine Burton passed along to the township.

The students presented their idea and reasons for it at the township committee meeting on Aug. 15. Three scouts, sophomore Jamie Serruto, senior Brain Cariddi and sophomore Ryan Cannon, spoke about why the street should be named for Fineran. Also, in attendance at the meeting were Troop 17 alumni, community members and Fineran’s widow Marie.

Cannon, the son of the scoutmaster, explained to the township committee that he has been a Boy Scout for five years, but his first three were with Fineran. Although only a short time, those few years had a lasting impact on him.

“Mr. Fineran has inspired me to do my best,” he said in his speech. “He has inspired me to go above and beyond. And through his example, he has inspired me to give back to the community and other causes. He didn’t get paid, and may have received an occasional thank you.

But tonight is our last chance, as a community, to thank a man that was positively instrumental in the lives of many.”

CCM Exhibition Recognizes Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

n conjunction with the Counseling and Student Success department at County College of Morris, the college’s Art and Design Gallery will host an exhibition to recognize National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

The exhibition, titled “Marisa Rincón: An Impression of Life,” will feature the artwork of Marisa Rincón, a 2007 CCM Fine Arts graduate, who died by suicide this past February.

The exhibit consists of more than 20 works by Rincón. Also featured in the show are painted portraits of Rincón created by prominent New Jersey artists Tim Maher, John B. Wolff and Lorraine deSmet. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs through Oct. 13, in Gallery B, which is the outer portion of the gallery.

A second exhibit featuring the work of CCM professors from the photography pro-

gram, titled “Photography Program Faculty Exhibition,” will be held in Gallery A, through Oct. 13.

Students may embrace the dawn of a new school year, while others might embrace the crisp weather after a season of heat. One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage.

Although New England may be renowned for its bright, orange, red and yellow panoramas, dazzling displays of foliage can be witnessed anywhere temperatures descend enough for deciduous trees to shed their leaves.

The first step to a successful fall foliage excursion is to find the right spot. The Catskill and Adirondack Mountains of New York, Amish Country in Pennsylvania, the Great Lakes from Michigan to Ohio, and many other areas can be great places to witness nature at its most colorful. To make the most of fall foliage road trips, drivers can keep the following suggestions in mind.

• Get off the highway. To see great fall vistas, take a detour from major thoroughfares and visit small towns and mountain passes. Invest in some maps, as cellular networks may be inaccessible in remote locales.

• Avoid tourist-heavy areas.

Drivers may prefer less crowded roadways to accompany the great scenery. Such drivers should visit areas that are not tourist meccas. Any area that plays home to forests and sprawling landscapes will do.

hen it comes to storms and hurricanes, you can never be too prepared.

To keep your family safe, it’s important to prepare for the worst because once a hurricane or storm hits, action must be taken quickly.

In the case of a power outage, a common side effect of natural disasters, one of the best pieces of equipment to have on hand is a portable generator. Portable generators can provide the power needed to access important radio or television weather updates, lights, hot water and refrigeration for safe food storage, among other necessities. After a storm, it is difficult to predict when power will be restored, so it’s best to be prepared with a backup power source.

When used properly, portable generators can save lives, but there are some risks that come along with using them. Safe use is critical to avoid dangerous carbon monoxide which you cannot see, taste or smell.

Five Ways To Get Acquainted With A New Neighborhood

According to a survey by DuProprio, a Quebec-based real estate advice site, 28 percent of Canadians feel the need to move every five years. Surprisingly, DuProprio also found that 14 percent of owners wish they could move every year.

The main reasons people move are expansion of the family, a career change, retirement, empty nest situations, or when moving is more practical than large-scale home renovations.

While some people stick close to previous home locations, a 2015 American Community Survey found approximately 16.9 million people moved to a different county in 2015.

Whether a move is across county lines or overseas, it can take some time to acclimate to a new neighborhood. These tips can help anyone get acquaint-

ed with their new surroundings and make friends in the process.

1. Host a housewarming party. Get to know immediate neighbors by hosting a party.

After some unpacking is done, host a simple get-together for people who live nearby. Ask if neighbors can help out by bringing chairs. Offer light refreshments and some type of activities for children. The event doesn’t have to be extensive, just long enough to engage in some conversation and introduce yourself.

2. Walk and drive around.

Scout out the area by driving around and making note of shopping centers, parks and places of interest. Schedule times when you will get out of the car and walk around on foot, which makes it easier to take everything in. Use a website like Walkscore.com to find places within walking distance of your new home. Bring the dog along.

Dogs can be great ice breakers with new neighbors.

3. Check out community blotters. Community events may be posted in print and distribut-

ed through a local newspaper and also on municipal websites.

Find out where the locals go on weekends or during the week.

Communities may take pride in certain activities. It’s easier to get a feel for the neighborhood by spending time with the locals.

4. Become active in the community. Find a volunteer organization or join a local house of worship. Check with the local chamber of commerce for ways

to get involved or clubs to join.

Like-minded people can make living in a new locale more enjoyable.

5. Dine out once a week. If budget allows, try a new neighborhood eating establishment each week to get a lay of the land. You’ll identify hot spots and hidden gems and will also be able to mingle with the community. An app such as Open Table can help you find places to eat nearby.
