Millburn Resident Selflessly Spearheads Town-wide Initiative to Make Masks

By Jillian Risberg hen COVID-19 hit, Carisa Reilly knew she didn’t want to sit idly doing nothing. So the real estate broker and mom of three transformed into the powerhouse ‘Mask Lady.’

It all started with an email chat on Millburn/Short Hills WorkMom group, where several healthcare professionals mentioned they were desperate for masks. “And somebody said, ‘Can’t we just make these’ and Reilly said, ‘Oh my Gosh, yes.’”

So they started researching CDC-approved patterns and

materials.

“There was a suggestion to put an extra filter in the mask,” says the real estate broker. “Like when you make the mask for nurses and hospital staff it needs to be more than just fabric and they really like to use those Swiffer (dry dust cloths) ‘cause they are electrostatic, so that’s what we did.”

“I literally bought the town out of Swiffer,” she says.

“People donated hundreds of Swiffers, fabric and elastic and I found nose guards that I could put in.”

David Merdinger, who owns a wholesale fabric supply (NJ Textiles) generously supplied them with hundreds of yards of

fabric and elastic for masks and scrub caps, according to Reilly.

“We could not have done this without him,” she says. “He truly made all the difference.”

It was Merdinger’s wife who forwarded him Carisa’s email detailing what she was doing and he jumped right in.

“I saw it as an opportunity to help her, our community and our local hospitals,” he says. “I’m glad I was able to do my share. We have to thank Carisa for coordinating all the facets of this remarkable project.”

“So we tried to organize, if you don’t know how to sew — donate fabric, cut fabric and elastic, assemble the pieces,” Reilly says. “It became very quickly a cottage industry, it was like managing a small factory remotely.”

That meant the real estate broker constructed the masks anywhere she could — in her basement, garage, bedroom, living room.

And she had help from her twin daughters, Madeline and Abigail and many devoted volunteers. The group collectively called themselves The Mask Makers for NJ Workers, who would drop off their finished products at Reilly’s house.

“Because at that point really what we were focused on was protecting our essential workers and our vulnerable people and our social services,” says The Mask Lady. “And we made hundreds for our civil servants in town and Department of Public Works and all of our municipal workers.”

Reilly says the community was amazingly supportive.

“There were maybe 10 of us sewing these at home and we were being told publicly it’s actually probably a really good idea (to wear a mask),” she says. “So I was an

early adopter of wearing a mask.”

For most of us, it’s the first time faced with a global threat like the Coronavirus.

When Governor Murphy abruptly stopped school for thousands of Garden State kids, Madeline spent the bulk of her spring break in the garage helping her mom make masks.

She says she doesn’t really feel safe.

“It’s still kind of dangerous to go out and stuff,” the 16-year-old says, with The Mask Lady adding that they’ve tried to be pretty careful.

“It’s been hard for everybody but especially for kids it’s really changed their lives,” Reilly says.

By the end of March, early April she realized they’ve got to employ seamstresses because trying to produce 50/masks a day on their own wasn’t going to cut it and there were healthcare workers who urgently needed them.

She reached out to Millburn Mayor Jackie Lieberberg, who offered her invaluable support. Next step was to raise $2,400.

“I put in $600 of my own money,” the real estate broker says. “In a week we had about $5000 or $6,000. That enabled us to crank them out. The goal was 1,200 (masks) in seven days. We did 1,200 in like 14 days and just had to keep doing them.”

According to Lieberberg, at the very beginning of the pandemic she had the opportunity to highlight folks who were doing exceptional work in town. That included Reilly, whose community-wide effort to make masks spanned the healthcare workers, first responders and those exposed through their dedicated work with the public.

“It took a village but Carisa hired the sewers, sourced the material, employed people,” the mayor says. “I mean it was incredible what she did — really singlehandedly, running around delivering fabric, people donating fabric, and she perfected her craft. With each batch it got better and better. They’re (the masks) unique; I give her a tremendous amount of credit and she has another day job.”

And it wasn’t just Millburn, says Lieberberg. The real estate broker’s face coverings also went to an underserved population that otherwise wouldn’t have had access to face masks.

“It’s very gratifying that her generosity had no boundaries,” the mayor says.

By Executive Order towards the end of April all essential workers and frontline workers had to wear masks and if you were in a store you were required to wear a mask.

“Now we have a whole new group of peo-

ple who need masks and it was still really hard to find them,” Reilly says. “So we had to develop a different kind of mask because what we were doing for healthcare workers was very protective but also quite hot to have three full layers on your face.”

She and the Mask Makers felt they needed to regroup.

“So we came up with a completely different design that was two layers of fabric, lightweight, much easier to make,” says The Mask Lady. “And it was really important to me and still is to source as much as we could locally.”

They have produced more than 3,000 masks and scrub caps thus far. And she is involved in a Millburn/Short Hills volunteer gardening project, one more way The Mask Lady is giving back and making a difference.

Looking ahead, the real estate broker is also planning to take part in an initiative on Alignable.com called #mymoneystayslocal, which involves being a leader in the community to encourage people to support local businesses and services whenever possible.

Want To Boost Economic Growth?

Tell Government To Spend Less

Intellectuals are supposed to speak truth to power. Unfortunately, some seem to be more interested in saying what everyone expects them to say, which only reinforces the status quo.

Thankfully, a few scholars are resisting this trend, fighting for what is true rather than what is popular.

Case in point: a recent Hoover Institution paper on “A Pro-Growth Fiscal Consolidation Plan for the United States” by economists John Cogan, Daniel Heil and John Taylor, which makes the case for a reduction in spending now in order to positively impact the economy.

It’s refreshing to see their research, considering that we live in a world where pundits and even economists bend over backward to make the case that more debt is not a problem and that more fiscal stimulus is desirable. Never mind that the arguments that intellectuals offer to defend these claims aren’t supported by the academic literature. Consider the mistaken notion that more spending will stimulate the economy and somehow reduce the debt burden of the policy in the first place. Research overwhelmingly confirms that, for a variety of reasons, the return of government spending on economic growth is much less than the money spent.

Then there’s the argument that interest rates are low and hence, it’s a good time to take on more debt -- despite the chance that variable interest won’t always be that low. But more debt, even at low rates, still means more interest payments. Before COVID-19, the United States paid close to $400 billion in interest payments annually, or 8% of our budget. It’s only going to get worse now. Japan, for instance, has a massive amount of debt, despite its 0% long-term interest rates. Its debt repayments are its second-largest budget item.

I wish reporters and economists would stop asserting, like The Wall Street Journal recently did, “The example of

Mark Shields Japan has shown that debts can rise for a long time, well above 200% of GDP, without sparking a fiscal crisis.” Really? I would have thought that Japan’s two decades of no growth and wage stagnation could be considered a crisis.

Moreover, Japan is quite different than the United States and can get away with more overall debt than we could.

That’s because most Japanese securities are held in the Social Security trust fund that’s owned by the government. This means that net public sector debt is actually significantly lower in Japan than in the United States.

Enter the new paper by Cogan, Heil and Taylor, which finds that, when faced with an inevitable debt explosion in our future, the only viable and desirable option is for Uncle Sam to limit expenditures as a share of GDP, around the 20% ratio that prevailed before the pandemic. The authors find that this approach avoids the “potentially large increase in future federal taxes.” Better yet, they actually find that the policy would boost both short- and long-term GDP. This research will be added to decades of empirical evidence that spending-based consolidations are expansionary in the long term and, sometimes, can boost growth in the short term, too.

When Reporters Babble ‘Without Evidence’

ne of the common tropes we see in everyday news coverage is the claim that something said by President Donald Trump or his supporters is “without evidence.” This is a stark factual claim. Sometimes, it’s starkly wrong.

The hashtag #DefundNPR started trending on Sept. 1 after NPR tweeted this to 8.3 million followers: “President Trump declined to condemn the actions of the suspected 17-year-old shooter of 3 protesters against police brutality in Kenosha -- claiming, without evidence, that it appeared the gunman was acting in self-defense.”

Video evidence clearly shows a man holding a handgun approach the 17-year-old, Kyle Rittenhouse, while he is on his back, and Rittenhouse shoot him in the arm. You don’t have to justify everything Rittenhouse did to know there’s obvious evidence of acting in self-defense.

The actual article NPR linked in the tweet made no such boast of Trump acting “without evidence.” Reporter Alana Wise cautiously claimed: “Graphic video from the chaotic scene only tells a partial story. The shooter’s alleged actions have split onlookers on party lines.” But she failed to explain what the video showed.

The words “without evidence” are routinely applied to Trump’s statements about mail-in voting. On the “Today” show on Aug. 16, NBC’s Hallie Jackson said, “On Saturday, the president, without evidence, claimed mail-in voting to be, quote, ‘catastrophic.’” On the same show two days later, NBC’s Peter Alexander lectured saying, “The president, without evidence, keeps escalating his attacks on universal mail-in voting and defending recent policy changes at the Postal Service that critics warn could delay the delivery of ballots.”

But NBC is blatantly avoiding evidence from its own base in New York City. The city took six weeks to count a record 400,000 absentee ballots cast in the June 23 primary and didn’t certify

When Maloney’s opponent, Suraj Patel, conceded last week, he complained that 11,000 ballots in the district remained uncounted. Thousands of voters also reported receiving their ballots late or never getting one.

If you’re a Patel backer, that would feel “catastrophic.” It would certainly feel “catastrophic” to Trump-hating reporters if Trump were to win a state with mail-in ballots by a narrow margin.

They would complain if it took weeks to count the ballots and if some ballots were never counted. No one believes they wouldn’t eagerly promote challenges to the integrity of the election.

Meanwhile, it’s sadly routine for liberal media outlets to make outlandish claims about Trump. The Washington Post editorial board recently published a hyperpartisan editorial claiming Trump “has done as much as any global actor to advance the cause of authoritarianism and undermine the free world. Mr. Trump’s most conspicuous aid to tyranny has been his relentless support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

Many colleges and universities grappled with how to approach the 2020-21 academic year as the world continued to battle the COVID-19 outbreak. Some schools chose to offer only remote learning and keep kids off campus entirely, while others offered in per-

son classes and welcomed students back to campus. Still others created hybrid learning plans that combined remote learning with in person sessions.

outcome, students who returned to campus must be prepared to enter quarantine if they or a friend, classmate or roommate tests positive for COVID-19. In anticipation of that, it pays for students to prepare quarantine bags in case they need to isolate themselves at any point during the semester.

Clothing Few college students have exclusive access to washers and dryers in their dorm rooms or apartments. Shared laundry rooms will likely be off limits while students are under quarantine, so make sure to pack enough clothing to get through two weeks of isolation. Take inventory of your supply of pajamas, underwear and socks and purchase more if necessary.

Food and cooking supplies College students accustomed to eating their meals at the dining hall food may need to prepare their own meals while in quarantine. Stock up on nonperishable items, such as pasta, soup, rice, and cereal, that can be stored in your room for long periods of time without expiring. Bottled water can help you stay hydrated should you feel ill, while decaffeinated tea can help you stay warm should you feel chills. Bring along a mini refrigerator, a toaster or toaster oven, a tea kettle, some pots and pans, bowls and plates, and utensils as well.

Medical supplies Extra masks are a must-have when returning to campus, and they can help students make it through quarantine as well.

Masks can be worn when using restrooms or showers, even if students are attending schools that plan to isolate people who test positive in buildings that cannot be accessed by non-infected community members.

In addition to extra masks, make sure you have enough daily medical supplies, such as toothpaste, shampoo, body lotion or soap, deodorant, tissues, and disinfectant, to last through quarantine, which is typically no less than two weeks.

Technology While in quarantine, students will want to stay connected to the outside world and parents will no doubt want to check in as often as possible to see how their children are faring. A reliable laptop, desktop or tablet can ensure students can chat with family and friends and even stay up-to-date with their schoolwork via the Zoom conferencing app.

A backup phone charger also can make sure students stay connected throughout their quarantine period.

Here’s why: The traditional objection against spending cuts is that they hurt demand (consumption), but this study shows that a reduction in spending actually increases consumption in the short run and into the long run.

That’s because, in the same way people tend to increase their savings during a recession due to fear of the future, consumers also consider the long-term tax implications of

today’s spending measures. They’ll increase their spending and investment habits in anticipation of future tax cuts -or, at the very least, no future tax hikes. The result is that the growth in output resulting from the spending restraint is driven primarily by consumption, which should be politically salient. The authors, however, also highlight that, as expected, investment reacts positively in the long run.

At a time when flawed arguments for more government spending and more debt are reemerging, this paper goes against the big government status quo and offers a

blueprint for us to not only regain control of our spiraling debt but also do so in a way that will boost short- and longterm economic growth by boosting demand and then investment.

Half the Fun is Getting There

By Laverne H. Bardy ur plane was scheduled to take off momentarily. My cousin and I stood at the airline counter and presented proof of who we are. I showed the photo on my license. Phyllis had a passport.

The airline attendant looked at Phyllis’ passport, then at Phyllis, then back at the passport.

“This picture doesn’t look like you,” she snarled.

Wise-guy that I am I said, “Oh, pulleeease, nobody looks like their passport picture, thank goodness.”

“No,” she grunted. “This doesn’t look like you.”

She held up the passport. By George, she was right. The picture looked nothing like Phyllis, because she’d brought her husband’s passport by mistake.

Phillis and I doubled over with laughter, but stopped abruptly when the attendant informed us Phyllis could not enter the plane without photo identification. Me swearing that she really was Phyllis didn’t alter her decision.

Sweat formed on Phyllis’ forehead as she foraged through her purse, and came up with her Costco photo ID card. The attendant squinted, examined the picture, then waved us through, which neither

of us understood because her husband’s passport picture looked more like Phyllis than her Costco photograph.

Because ours were last minute reservations we were stuck in the last row, next to the rest rooms. The seats were tight and didn’t lean back. My knees narrowly missed touching my nose. It was hot.

Suddenly, I didn’t feel well. I told Phyllis I needed to remove my tight, restricting bra or I was going to be sick. I asked her to cover me.

I had the window seat; Phyllis was on the aisle. She looked around and said all was clear.

I leaned as far forward as I could – which wasn’t far considering how close my seat was to the one in front of me – and unhooked my bra. Then, I worked magic in the most discrete way possible as I reached into the jacket’s sleeves, and bent each elbow in a way that allowed me to slip my bra straps over them. Once my shoulders were free, I reached under the front of my jacket and pulled the bra out.

A pretty smooth operation, if I do say so.

Suddenly Phyllis, who had been standing in the aisle, concealing me from other passengers, fell over her seat and laughed so hard and for so long she was unable to catch her breath. The flight attendant

came by and asked if there was something she could do, but Phyllis was incoherent.

Our goal had been to avoid attention, but instead we’d become the center of attraction. Everyone was looking. Everyone, while Phyllis continued laughing.

Finally, gasping, she gathered her wits.

“A man was behind me, in the out-cove between the restrooms. He must have been in the restroom when you began your strip, and came out in time to enjoy your entire act. By the time I realized he was there, your puppies had already been freed.”

I was mortified. I wanted to fall through a hole in the plane. But, suddenly, I rethought the situation. I wasn’t going to let it bother me. I had done this man a service. Because of me he had a great story to share with his buddies; one I was certain he would embellish.

In the meantime, I couldn’t figure out how to leave the plane without him seeing me. Then I realized he probably never saw my face.

I had purchased an Easy-Pass ticket Online. When I arrived at the airport I brought my ticket to an Easy-Pass check-in machine and answered the prompted questions.

One question stumped me so I asked a desk attendant for assistance. She requested identification. I reached under the top

of my scoop neck blouse and whipped out my license and credit card, where I’d filed them for easy access.

The attendant laughed loudly, and informed all surrounding attendants of my efficient filing system. I enjoyed a laugh with them and left for the plane.

Ten minutes later, while in the Ladies Room I heard the following on the loud speaker: Will Laverne Bardy please return to the check-in counter for her license and credit card, on which she can expect to find several new charges for the Home Shopping Network?

Laughing all the way, I retrieved my card from the same woman who had assisted me a few moments earlier.

It was time to enter the plane. A male voice announced that passengers with an F or a B code on their tickets would be subject to security checks. I had neither an F or a B, but that same attendant was now continued on page 8

The attendant, with a huge grin, instructed the guard to pay special attention to my chest because knowing my penchant for storing things there, I could have a concealed weapon.

By now I was laughing hysterically, the attendant was howling and the guard, who

was frisking me with his wand, was loving his assignment.

On my return trip, I lost my license in the airport. An armed guard found it but refused to return it unless I gave him my phone number. What could I do? He had a gun.

Livingston Man’s First Professional Short Film Enters Post-Production

By Steve Sears 1-year-old Livingston resident Ralph Gamba has made great strides this year with his personal filmmaking, and the best thing yet is on the doorstep. “View,” his first professional short film, is entering post-production.

Gamba, a Pace University junior and Digital Cinema and Filmmaking major in the Media Communications and Visual Arts Department, explains his project, which was assigned by Pace University professor, Lou Guarneri. “I was lucky enough to take a class called Story Idea Development this past spring,” he says. “In that class, we were told to put together a screenplay, and so that screenplay is the basis of the film.” Pace University was offering students who decided to do a research project over the summer $1,000, and Gamba grabbed the opportunity and used the money to fund his film.

Here’s the teaser. In the 15-minute film, the profile is on an everyday, general office worker immersed in a 9 to 5 routine. “It basically started from a basis of my own emotions – kind of feeling along with everything, sort of coming back from my winter break – so I kind of put all of those emotions into the everyday character,” Gamba says. “He simply goes through this whole

routine, and something causes his routine to break, and there’s this whole big change: ‘Why am I doing this routine? Who am I doing this routine for?’ All these sort of life questions that we always ask ourselves.” Olivia Velta, a friend of Gamba’s, plays the role of a nurse in the film.

Gamba is looking to submit the film somewhere, and he credits the help of his professor, Melanie LaRosa, who is Project Mentor and Editing Professor and has been in the business for over 20 years. Gamba has discussed distribution with her, but he is also going to shop it at various film festivals and Pace University school events.

In addition to Sarah Morge and Emily Alfieri, who are also friends of Gamba’s and editors on the project, Alan Torres, who met Gamba when both were students at Seton Hall Prep, is his Executive Producer. “I do help him (Gamba) with certain shots, and I do post-production music choices, buy I’m mostly an auxiliary, trying to aid him as much as I can.” He also adds, “He (Gamba) is a good writer. We actually had senior Honors English together, and all year long, Ralph would always get better grades on every single paper. For Gamba, who grew up loving films, the biggest touchstone was when he was a toddler, which coincided with the initial Pirates of the Caribbean releases. “I was very obsessed with pirates and all things piracy and that sort of fantasy world, but I also found myself watching the behindthe-scenes DVD of the actual movie. And so, from that early age, I kind of built up this love of seeing how it works. At around age 12, I knew this was where I was going to head, because I had this interest in the process.” For Gamba, it was cemented when, at a college fair, a recruiter asked him what his major was, and Gamba blanked and just blurted out, “Film.” For the remainder of the fair, he discussed the choice with others and realized it was the way to go.

By Jillian Risberg OVID-19 has upended the very fabric of our existence, prompting four selfless Livingston High School juniors to create a life-changing opportunity with pairs of shoes.

It was during those long quarantine days that Nicki Depalma, Jamie Porigow, Lauren Belcuore and Becca Cullen created “Revamped Style,” a charitable organization that refurbishes old shoes for those in need.

“Being able to clean, decorate and donate hundreds of shoes allows us to create a huge impact not only in our community

but worldwide,” says Depalma. “Knowing that our donations provide a physical pair of unique shoes — items of comfort to impoverished people and support for their businesses is an amazing feeling.”

At any age helping others, we help ourselves. The Revamped Style ladies are starting young.

“Helping others has always been something that I love to do,” Porigow says. “I’ve been volunteering at the friendship circle for a few years now and it warms my heart seeing the smile on the kids faces. I was also the president of the PB&J club at my school, which allowed me to take responcontinued on page 12

What does Nicki, Jamie, Lauren and Becca’s ‘new normal’ look like…

“Throughout the week we have a pretty consistent schedule when it comes to managing Revamped Style,” Belcuore says.

“We collect and clean up the shoes on weekdays and come together every other Friday to band and ship out the shoes to allow the less fortunate to experience the excitement of getting a nice pair of shoes.”

When Soules4Souls got wind of what the Revamped Style ladies were doing; Lizzy Swiderski, director of operations for the New Jersey branch was all about it.

They have since connected to chat about their plans for teaming up together.

“We have stayed in touch with Lizzy through emails, Zoom and social media,” says Cullen. “Shipping our boxes of donations and receiving our impact letter from Soules4Souls is the best feeling in the world.”

By partnering with the nonprofit means doing something for the greater good outside of themselves.

“We are all fortunate to have essential items such as clothing, footwear, food supply, water and money for educational costs,” Nicki Depalma says. “I hope that through our donations we cannot only put a smile on the faces of those who receive them but give them that sense of comfort from these items we are so lucky to have.”

The power of their journey has not been lost on the ladies.

“Being able to make an impact in the world and people’s life,” says Depalma.

“Now more than ever, whether big or small, it is important to get involved.”

When it comes to getting others to join their mission, social distancing and various protocols can present a challenge but the ladies remain committed to their endeavor regardless, reminded of the extreme struggles that so many are suffering.

According to Cullen, there are several ways to help — start with donating old shoes that will be cleaned up and/or redesigned, then sent out to Soles4Souls. Then follow the ladies’ Instagram or Facebook page to get updates/progress and help Revamped Style grow.

“Lastly, Livingston High School students can join the Revamped Style Club in September when school starts to contribute, clean and revamp shoes with us to donate,” Cullen says.

The pandemic granted the ladies a lot of time to contemplate.

“We understand that our commitment

to this project is vital — as these issues in countries like Guatemala and Haiti are very pressing,” says Belcuore.

The ladies say they feel accomplished and proud about the impact Revamped Style has made.

“When we are able to return to school we are going to leave a donation box where people can leave their old shoes — we have donation boxes located in different towns around New Jersey and are striving to get more locations and boxes,” Porigow says. “We know the importance one shoe can make, which is why with our best efforts, we want to collect and donate the most amount of shoes as we can.”

With such altruistic and entrepreneurial spirits, the sky’s the limit for these four.

Porigow says this entire journey has definitely helped her make a decision about her future.

“I have always been very passionate about helping others. I love giving my friends advice along with mentoring younger children,” she says. “Being a therapist or school guidance counselor sounds like an exciting job that allows me to do something I love to do the most.”

Collecting and revamping the shoes became very therapeutic for Cullen.

“It made me feel like I am able to do some good in the world during such a time of hysteria,” she says. “Never did I think I would be able to do something like this at my age, but with the help of my friends and Soles4Soles, it became possible.

“It has been an amazing experience and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Revamped Style.”

During this pandemic job opportunities have become less obtainable, causing more families to struggle.

“With the support of my friends, family and peers, we are able to collect and revamp so many shoes and help turn someone’s life around,” says Porigow.

At the end of the day, Lauren Belcuore loves being able to combine her passion for art while working towards a positive change.

“Living in an affluent community like Livingston, I believe we are very fortunate to have the ability to use our resources to help others,” says Belcuore. “These shoes that could be considered trash in one person’s eyes can be recycled into something that means the world to another.

“I think the beauty of Revamped Style is that it provides individuals an easy outlet to make a big difference,” she says.

Humor Columnist Laverne Bardy Releases New Collection

n a time where we could all use a few laughs comes “Driving Backwards on a One-Way Street: A Savvy Senior’s Map to Finding Humor in Everything,” from the irreverent mind of New Jersey humor columnist Laverne H. Bardy.

Featuring 71 of the humorist’s favorite columns, “Driving Backwards on a One-Way Street” explores aging in America with a delightfully wicked humor and wit that appeals to any age. Divided into themes like “Oops!”, Bardy, who lives in Green Township by Newton, explores topics both timely and timeless.

With content like this streaming from her fingers, it’s surprising to know that Bardy hadn’t always dreamed of being a humor columnist.

“I never consciously thought about writing a column, I just knew I enjoyed writing,” she said of the origins of her column, which for many years now has been nationally syndicated. “All my life I’ve been told that I am funny. It was early on, while the children were all in school, and I was sitting with a group of friends around my kitchen table, that I realized each of the stories we were relating were similar. And, they were funny.”

At the time, she was in charge of a PTA newsletter at her children’s school, so she began cataloguing everyday, relatable events and putting her unique touch to them.

Eventually she submitted a few columns to a local newspaper. They were accepted and her “career” as a columnist officially began. Decades later, she’s still at it.

“I can’t imagine ever starting a day without paying a visit to my office, sitting in front of my computer, and writing something. Anything,” she said of her passion.

“Writing is one of few occupations that a person can continue doing clear into senility.”

I Remember Dad:

T

By Richard Mabey Jr. here are moments in our lives where a single, solitary, seemingly mundane event, transpires to become a most monumental and sacred accomplishment in time. Such was the evening, back in the Summer of 1943, when my dad wrote a letter to his grandmother, Dora Dolson Mabey.

Dad wrote his letter to his grandmother from his bed inside the barracks at Hickam Air Field during World War II. Back then, the men of the United States Army Air Corps wrote letters on very, very thin paper to save on the cost of mailing.

I was only six years old when my great grandmother went Home to be with the Lord. But I still remember her talking about the letters that Dad wrote to her, when Dad was serving in the Seventh Army Air Corps during World War II. And one letter in particular had a profound effect upon my great grandmother.

I guess I was about four or five years old, when we used to visit Great Grandma Mabey at the old Mabey Homestead, in her stately living room. We lived in Clifton at the time. And, as a young child, I found the Mabey Homestead to be a most fascinating

Dad’s Letters to His Grandmother and enchanting place to visit. I had no idea, no clue, no indication that at the age of six, a most incredible and sacred turn of events would lead to the Mabey Homestead becoming my home for a long, long time.

Great Grandma Mabey had a rocking chair in her living room. She became a widow in 1936, at the age of 65, when my great grandfather, William Mabey, suffered a stroke and went Home to be with the Lord.

There was a loneliness that loomed deep in the eyes of Great Grandma Mabey.

In Dad’s legendary letter, that he wrote to his grandmother from Hickam Air Field, he shared with his grandmother, his heartfelt memories of his grandfather. Specifically, picking strawberries from Earl’s Meadow with his Grandpa. Of Dad walking down to the old Morris Canal with his grandfather.

And, very specifically, the time that Great Grandpa Mabey, Grandpa Mabey and Dad built the shed along Mabey Lane on Earl’s Meadow. It was a letter that my great grandmother dearly cherished.

I remember when I was seven years old and we were now living in the old Mabey Homestead. Dad let me climb the ladder to go into the attic with him. It was quite a big

deal for a kid to climb up the attic ladder with his dad. I remember Dad asked me to help him look for the letters that he had written to his grandmother, while he was in the Army Air Corps. Sadly, we never did find the letters.

What became of Dad’s letters to his grandmother is a great mystery, that at

times still haunts me. My great grandmother was a very organized person. She had a very sensitive and caring heart. It’s just odd that the letters were lost.

There was a part of my father that was a rugged, tough as nails, strong man. Dad was the long-distance truck driver, the continued on page 19

I Remember Dad... continued from page 18 Scoutmaster. He stood proud and loved his family and loved the Lord. Then, there was another side of my dad, that was a very sensitive and caring man. He secretly and quietly helped hundreds and hundreds of individuals; in the neighborhood, in his family, in scouts, in church, at work and in his community. My father had no tolerance for people taking advantage of him, but he would give the shirt off his back to someone in need.

I often wish that Dad and I had found the letters that he had written to his grandmother. It makes me very sad that they had gotten lost. I would have loved to have read my father’s recollections of his childhood, written when he was a young man at Hickam Air Field.

Life isn’t always fair. I cherish my early childhood memories of Great Grandma

Mabey sitting in her rocking chair, talking about Dad’s letters. It had a great affect upon me. I think it was a factor in my decision to become a writer. I remember how Dad’s letters had so deeply touched his grandmother. I realized then, at a very, very age, the uplifting power of words.

In dreams, I often go back to the memory of visiting Great Grandma Mabey. Of her talking about the letters that Dad had written her. And, specifically one very special letter where Dad shared with his grandmother, the fond memories that he held in his heart for his grandfather. O’ to turn back the pages of the calendar, for even just a few hours.

Recalling Morris Catholic’s Greatest Cross-Country Teams

By Steve Sears om Donahue was only a Cross-Country Head Coach at Morris Catholic High School from 1972 through 1978.

But what he and his team accomplished in that short period, especially in 1974 and 1975, was astounding. The 1974 and 1975 clubs won the New Jersey Meet of Champions, becoming the first team to win back-to-back titles. They also finished each season ranked #1 in New Jersey. The team also won five consecutive Parochial B titles from 1974 to 1978.

“Oh God, they were over the top good,” says Donahue, especially of the top ranked teams. “In the year 2000, The Star-Ledger, which covers the entire state, decided to name in every sport the team of the century. And Morris Catholic was named the team of the decade in the entire state for the 1970s.”

Prior to Donahue’s arrival, Morris Catholic had participated in thirteen seasons of Cross-Country, never having a winning season, always finishing below .500. In the following seven seasons, the club went undefeated in dual meets for seven years in a continued on page 21

row. “That’s the first thing,” says Donahue.

“The second thing was the first year they went undefeated in dual meets and won their league championship, which was the Paterson Diocesan Regional League. The second year, they won the Morris County title, but they didn’t win the state title, which kind of surprised me. For the last five years, they won numbers two through six in their county titles, they won five straight Parochial B titles, and two of those

years they shut out the rest of the state in Parochial B.” Donahue says the 1974 and 1975 clubs were special. “They were just all in,” he says, citing especially David Lamm (“Legendary,” he says), Marty Moratz, and Kevin Molteni among those who put the program “over the top.” “Totally committed,” Donahue says of the three and the rest of the team members. “And you have to have some talent; you can’t be talent-less.”

Donahue is also quick to point out that Lamm, the Captain of the 1974 squad, was not a runner, but a JV wrestler in a low weight class. In fact, he inherited quite a few of his runners from that realm. “Many of them (wrestlers) wear rubber suits and run continuous laps around the school to make weight. So, these kids are incredibly disciplined. They adapted very easily.

And as soon as they got success, they were mine. So, David Lamm was a wrestler, and became just a tremendous runner.”

“I was on the ‘74 and ‘75 teams,” says Molteni. “I was a sophomore in ‘74. The camaraderie on that team was special, and the upperclassman talent was deep.

‘75 brought the pressure to continue the legacy with a younger band of characters.

Somehow, we pulled it off. The word ‘Dynasty’ entered the campus lexicon.”

Donahue ran with the team almost every day and, according to Molteni, was faster than any of his runners. “He trained us hard and, out there on long runs, and during interval training at the edge of the anaerobic threshold, we transcended pain, and both honed our fitness, and forged our mental toughness.” Donahue, 70, and a member of the Morris Catholic Hall of

Fame, was a 1971 graduate of Manhattan College who also took part in that school’s famed Cross-Country program. “TD (Tom Donahue) was well coached, and he applied that knowledge to our adolescent forms,” adds Molteni. “He gave us confidence to believe in our fitness, and mental toughness, and challenged us to employ those hard-earned weapons against our competition on the way to the finish line.”

“Morris Catholic’s rise to the top of the state was, at the time, kind of a shock to the other 35 (Morris County) high schools,” explains Donahue, “because it never even had a winning season. I was able to get the kids to come out for the team in the early ‘70s. And the fact that we won six-consecutive county titles in Cross-Country as the smallest high school in the county was kind of unique.”

Molteni, now a pediatrician in Oregon, recalls that, after the 1975 season, the school purchased windbreaker jackets for the team with a custom logo that read: Morris Catholic X-C 1974-1975 Jersey’s Finest “It’s a pretty sweet memory,” says Molteni. “Thanks, Tom Donahue.”

Comics Legend Hy Eisman & the Epic Life of an Old-School Raconteur

H

By Jillian Risberg e’s the legendary cartoonist behind Popeye and The Katzenjammer Kids who’s been entertaining us for seven decades with his delightful storylines.

Hy Eisman also lent his immense talents (ghosting) to Kerry Drake, Little Iodine, Little Lulu, Archie and many more.

“But the most enjoyable was drawing the Little Iodine strip for the King Features Syndicate. I worked with Bob Dunn, who was the writer,” Eisman says. “It was the best 17 years of collaboration I ever had.”

The comics icon sold his sole original feature, It Happened in New Jersey to the (Newark Sunday News) in 1950 and did that for the next three years. The Glen Rock native grew up in Paterson so he knows plenty about the Garden State.

Now artist Marco Cutrone, veteran filmmaker Vincent Zambrano and cinematographer, Brian Timmons give us insight into the man behind the cartoons in ‘Hy Eisman: A Life in Comics’ — and they are aiming to finish the piece in time for Eisman’s 94th birthday in March 2021.

“Sometimes, I still can’t believe that we’ve brought this film as far as we have.

International renowned illustrator, Greg Hilderbrandt also contributed. He is most recognized for his design of one of the earliest theatrical release posters for Star Wars in 1977. And you’ll hear the voice of Frank Thorne (best known for the Marvel Comics character Red Sonja) at the beginning of the trailer introducing us to Eisman.

According to Cutrone, it is a tremendous honor to co-produce this documentary.

“His generation is leaving us one by one and eventually there will be no one left to give us actual written or verbal accounts of the cartoon industry,” says the realist painter. “I felt his collection of chronicled events needed to be preserved for the history books.”

Cutrone says a few more shoots are still needed to help round out the story.

So he and Zambrano launched a GoFundme page to offset the cost of logging, scripting, editing the footage as well as the

potential rights and clearances, music, final mix, color correction, mastering and more.

“We still have a ways to go in seeing this production through. That will simply not be possible without the help of donors,” says the art professor, adding that all who contribute will be credited at the end of the film.

He has mad admiration for the cartoon

pioneer’s determination.

“Considering the hardships he had to overcome in his early life, he stayed the course and made his dream come true,” the painter says.

And they are first generation Americans.

Nonstick cooking spray 1/2 sweet onion 1 red, yellow or orange bell pepper 1 head broccoli florets 2 teaspoons canola, avocado or olive oil 1 dozen eggs 2 cups low-fat cottage cheese 1 cup shredded cheese 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 tablespoon flour salt, to taste pepper, to taste Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 9-by-13inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.

Chop onion and bell pepper to age-appropriate sizes. Pick apart broccoli florets into small pieces and remove most of stems.

Heat medium-sized frying pan over medium heat. Add oil and swirl around pan.

Add onions and cook 3-4 minutes until they start to soften. Add broccoli and bell pepper.

Mix with onions and add salt and pepper, to taste. Cook 1-2 minutes then cover with lid to steam another 2-3 minutes until broccoli is bright green. Remove veggies from stovetop.

In large mixing bowl, beat eggs. Add cottage cheese, shredded cheese, baking powder and flour. Add veggies and salt and pepper, to taste. Transfer to prepared pan and bake 40 minutes. (Family Features)

Comics Legend... continued from page 22 project about such a man for that reason,” he says. “I enjoy telling these stories of success and determination against all odds.”

The art professor’s connection to the legendary cartoonist goes way back — they first met when both were teaching at The Kubert School in Dover. Eisman started there in 1976.

“I knew there was something special about Hy Eisman when we had lunch in the teachers’ room,” Cutrone says. “I noticed that all the other teachers wanted to hear Hy speak and share his accounts of the early days of the comic industry.”

He had the same esteem for those he worked alongside during those formative years, as the teachers did for him, according to the painter.

“He educated us every day with exciting recollections of the comic industry,” Cutrone says.

Of the cartoon legend, the art professor calls him a multitalented virtuoso in many areas of comics and says nowadays, students often come to The Kubert School to specialize in an area of comics but only a handful become proficient in more than one aspect of this art form.

“Hy Eisman can do virtually everything himself,” says Cutrone. “At age 93, his hand

is still steady enough to ink his own conceived storylines (and) he still has all of his wits about him, which allows him to make us guffaw at his cartoon humor.”

According to Eisman, doing a strip like Popeye, the basic gags were worked out years ago by the originator. What he does is a variation on the characters’ roles.

“Each character has a built-in role in the story,” the comics legend says. “And the story has certain set themes. Within that structure, Popeye goes fishing, he loves spinach, and he has an off and on relationship with Olive Oyl. Wimpy is the guy who’s always interested in hamburgers, Brutus is a menace, the Sea Hag is a witch, and so forth.”

He creates gags that fit the structure, then does drawings to illustrate the gags.

“The drawing and the gag are both important,” says Eisman. “Ideally, they should both be funny.”

He created his own impactful lettering and captures our attention with his very own, hand drawn compositions.

“This makes Hy Eisman extremely relevant to this day, as too many of us rely on a computer application to execute these things for us,” Cutrone says. “Hy never relied on a computer and he never had to. I remember the day we were changing everything over to Google classroom at the

school. As we left the meeting, I heard him say, ‘I think I just got Googled out of a job.’

Believe me when I say, that’s our loss.”

If you’re feeling nostalgic, luckily we’re treated to the cartoonist’s gifts to this day.

“Hy is still employed to draw, narrate and ink his two-syndicated stories,” says the painter. “There aren’t many comic artists in the world who can claim that. I don’t think there will be many like him in the future. It takes an immense talent to take those sour stories and turn them into unbiased life-lessons.”

The cartoon legend looks to the comic strips of yore.

According to Eisman, he read comics from the age of five and was inspired to become a cartoonist by Terry and the Pirates, Prince Valiant and Flash Gordon.

“Real drawing, real illustration,” he says.

“All along, I continued to look at the comics in the daily paper. But my inspiration came from the ones I grew up with.”

And Eisman has his process and tools down to a science.

“I first use a pencil to create the figures on the page, then ink them with pen and ink,” the comics icon says. “I do a rough composition in pencil of both the drawing and the words. This is on a plain sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 paper.”

He then transfers it to a 12 x 17 twoply sheet of heavy drawing paper (Bristol Board), using pen and ink, a T-square and triangle to set up the panels.

“It’s 100% rag paper — museum quality.

It stays white instead of yellowing, and the surface stays smooth after you erase on it.

This is important because after the inking is done, I erase the original pencil drawings.”

All his work is done in black and white, and the color is added later by the syndicate.

The decades long endurance and love for Eisman’s Popeye and The Katzenjammer Kids is directly due to the narrative ability and brilliance of Hy Eisman, since he is solely responsible for the charming story lines and all the artwork, start to finish, according to the art professor.

“That alone is an innate ability,” Cutrone says. “In a time when we sometimes seem to reward bad behavior with our attention, we should definitely make a point of thanking those who have put a smile on our face and took us to another place, even if for just a moment.”

The comics genius has always had a humble and unassuming way.

“It’s gratifying to learn of the impact I made in some people’s lives,” Eisman says of the documentary.

By Steve Sears endra Goodwin (Allen), popular ice skater and ice dancer from the late 1990s and early to mid-2000s, never competed in an actual Olympic Games.

However, she has “lived it” through her husband Jeremy, he was a coach at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. “I guess I got to live it vicariously through him,” she states with a chuckle, “so that was pretty cool. Just because my husband and I have this shared passion because he was a paired skater himself – we met through figure skating at the training center at the University of Delaware – and the rest is history. So, going to the Olympics, whether as a coach or as an athlete, that was just a huge moment for us as a family.”

Goodwin’s life has been rewarding. She has her family, her job as a high school Speech and Language Pathologist, and many rich memories of when she performed with some outstanding partners, they pairing

their skating talents with hers to attain lofty heights.

The 37-year-old Goodwin has been married since 2010, and she and her husband have two children: 6-year-old daughter Kajsa, and a two-year-old son, David. “That’s what I’ve always wanted, a family,” she says.

“We all just love each other. That’s number one.” Her job is number two. “Working with adults with disabilities, I’m so thankful I attained my master’s degree and focused on school.” She did have to leave competitive ice dancing, but if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have been (in her words, complete). “There was something else that I wanted in life other than figure skating. I’m very happy that I was successful in doing that.”

continued from page 26 win. Goodwin, who also has a sister, Anya, attended the University of Delaware, majored in Psychology, and minored in Linguistics, and received her Master’s in Speech Pathology from Northwestern University. She teaches at Mundelein High School in Mundelein, Illinois.

Goodwin reflects with much gratitude about her younger days in Randolph. “I remember that it was a very safe community, very easy to walk around by myself – my best friend, Meredith and myself would spend hours outside and go to the beach right on our lake (Shongum Lake) and we’d just ride our bikes around for hours. Again, it was a very safe community; my parents never had to worry while we were out during the day. I remember doing Indian Princesses with my Dad. Indian Princesses is probably one of my fondest memories with my Dad, where we were able to do the camping trips and go hiking together with their (her friends’) Dads, and that was very enjoyable.”

Her Mom and Dad started Goodwin and her sister off in group skating classes at Mennen Arena when she was 5 years old. “My parents supported us fully,” she says, “and you have to have a lot of commitment for the sport, so we did decide to eventually go with just figure skating. I was doing dance as well as gymnastics, and then the figure skating all at one time, and we had to get to that point where we had to choose one.” Goodwin says that is one of the things she likes about her parents, is the fact that they exposed her to many things. She now does the same for her own children. “I think because of that my parents were very supportive, putting everything into figure skating for us. Without that support, I never would have gone as far as I have gone.” Goodwin fondly recalls her Dad, suit on for work, driving her to early morning practices at 6 a.m., where she would skate for a couple of hours and then head to Center Grove Elementary School. “That was every morning for me,” she remembers. She also did camps and skating camps in Canada, Colorado, and Lake Placid.

“Ballroom on ice.” “I started ice dancing with my coaches at Mennen Arena – Colleen O’Connor and John Powell – they really got me into the ice dance part of it. You’re going to be with somebody when you’re out there competing out on the ice. That’s what I liked: the idea of being out on the ice with somebody else, practicing with them and performing with them, and not just being alone out there.” She continues, “The ability to express, that is a huge thing in ice dance. I’m really very naturally introverted to be honest with you, and I think growing up with skating as a commitment kind of made it harder for me socially, so partnering was a huge social outlet for me where I was continued on page 29

Goodwin’s initial two national pairings were with Paul Goldner and Ty Cockrum.

Her Mom, seeking an ice dance partner for Kendra, sent her photo to all the coaches around the United States. “I tried out with

Paul first and it went really well. We developed a partnership. I was a freshman, I believe, in middle school, and our Moms drove us everywhere. He was from New York and I was from New Jersey; his Mom would drive 45 minutes to an hour to meet us in New Jersey, and then vice-versa we would go up to New York.” Cockrum was a little further away continued on page 30

“The coach was great, and my parents were willing to give me the opportunity to let me move out to Seattle when I was 16 (she was a high school junior) to pursue ice dancing with Ty.” It was a culture change for her.

“Not the typical teenage life,” she says with a laugh. “I grew up really quickly.”

Goodwin’s greatest success came with partner Chris Obzansky. Competing in the junior level, the duo captured 1st place in the 2000 Junior Grand Prix event in China, and they were also the 2001 United States Junior National silver medalists, and also finished 15th at the 2001 World Junior Figure Skating Championships. It was quite a run of success, and then the partnership bond was broken when Obzansky chose to serve as a Mormon missionary. “It was huge,” she says of their parting. “It really opened up my eyes to understanding his faith, in general just understanding the commitment involved.

Not only did Chris have figure skating, but he also had his faith and religion, and I had to respect that. I couldn’t be mad at him for anything about it. I was very upset, but this was something that he felt he needed to do at that moment and time, and it was hard – it was definitely a challenge for me because of the sacrifices I had made with moving around, with moving to Delaware

to skate with Chris. There’s a lot of sacrifice that goes into this sport, and a lot of times the girls sacrifice more so than the boys, because there are more girls that are looking for partners than boys. I felt like we were at a pivotal moment in our career, but there was nothing I could’ve done about it. It was something Chris really wanted, and I had to support that.”

“At that time, we really could’ve been a very strong team nationally and internationally as we grew up if we had had a longer partnership.”

News spread of Goodwin’s seeking a new partner, and she found one in Brent Bommentre, whose close proximity to Goodwin’s Delaware (he was in Philadelphia) was perfect. And that wasn’t all. “I think our personalities really went well together,” Goodwin says. “Brent is very personable, he’s very friendly, very outgoing, very funny. I really appreciate humor, so there was a lot of laughing in our partnership.” And serious skating as well. The team won a pewter medal at the 2004 United States Championships and also took part in 2004 Skate America and the 2004 Cup of Russia. “I felt like it was a very positive experience with Brent.”

The partnership disbanded early in 2005, and Obzansky rejoined Goodwin on the ice for the rest of 2005 and 2006, and then Bommentre was back in 2008. “I feel like I really grew a lot through those partnerships,”

she says, “even though there were many of them.” Her parents were fonts of wisdom once more, telling her that from each partnership she’d learn something new, and the same thing with the coaches. “I really like that philosophy of not being fearful and just giving it a try and doing the best you can under those circumstances.”

Goodwin still occasionally laces on her skates. “I do – yes, I do,” she says with glee.

“I work very part-time and I do have a couple of students that I work with.”

Although inspired by fellow skaters in her

life, her parents are tops to her. “Especially now that I am a parent, just looking back at everything that they did for me and for skating, and the trust that they must’ve had (for me) as a teenager moving out to Seattle on my own, I think that really promoted that hard work ethic and that really supported the belief in me and gave me more confidence. They trusted me and respected that and they knew I was going to be responsible and make good decisions. Because of that, I grew as much as I did.”
