Once a month he hosts Clergy Corner, a 30-minute television show aired over Livingston Television (LTV) from Livingston High School. “We’re the only township that I know of that really is the bridge between the public school and religion,” says Rev.

Martian. “The Township Council of Livingston approved it (the show), and how we do it is we don’t support just one religion. We have a clergy panel of interfaith clergy and they range from Jewish, Hindu, Roman Catholic, Protestant, and then we have guests on Building Bridges, a segment of Clergy Corner.” “And this is our 9th season!” continued on page 2

Martian considers it an excellent teaching moment for the youths, “because they’re seeing and doing a talk show – all the ins and outs of the talk show. The camera work, the sound booth, the teleprompters. They make us look good; the students do a fantastic job.” Steve Milano, who teaches Televisions Studio Production at Livingston High School and is also LTV Technical Coordinator, also sees the value for his students, and agrees with the Reverend’s assessment. “Livingston High School Television Students benefit from the real-world experiences of working to produce a live, half hour program with serious themes and content. Unlike the projects given in class, advanced students learn to interact with adults in the community and real guests as they experience television production on a very real level.” Famed mentalist The Amazing Kreskin was in the house as a Building Bridges guest recently – Clergy Corner show #84 over nice seasons. “We build bridges: we build relationships with organizations or with people and with the community that are connected with people in the community. Helping people out with maybe different types of social work, food pantries, and how they better

people’s lives.” Rev. Martian, who has been Pastor at Presbyterian Church of Livingston for 14 years, says Kreskin was perfect for the segment because of his years in show business and experience in reading people. “He has a knack, a gift, for reading people. His motto is, ‘Even now I know what you’re thinking.’ And he gave the students a lot of food for thought, as far as words of wisdom like taking seven minutes out of every day for quiet time, to have humor in life, to laugh a lot and not get so serious.” A variety of topics have been discussed with different guests on the latter segment, which takes about the last seven minutes of the show. The interfaith panel portion of Clergy Corner is the first 20 – 25 minutes. The 30-minute show airs live and is also taped the first or second Wednesday of the month. The show is repeatedly broadcast throughout the month. “It’s educational for the students,” says Rev. Martian. “It’s faith-based. We’re not supporting one faith; we’re not talking about faith. In Defense of Iowa

e have reached that time in every presidential nominating year when distinguished, national opinion leaders beat up on Iowa and that admirable state’s influential role in determining the two major parties’ eventual presidential nominees and, therefore, the next president. The USA Today editorial board indicts Iowa for being “one of the least ethnically diverse states in the country” and its status as the first-in-the-nation presidential test every four years as “ un-American,” while Paul Waldman writes in The Washington Post that the Iowa caucuses “are a crime against democracy.” It is time someone stood up for Iowa and Iowans. It’s true that Iowa is neither very representative of the entire nation nor very average. Scholarly studies have ranked Iowa as tied for first place in percentage of the adult population who are high school graduates. Iowans are fourth highest in access to health care (more “representative” Florida and Texas rank 46th and 47th respectively in citizens’ access to health care); first in broadband access; and third highest in public libraries per capita. True, the Hawkeye State leads the nation in production of corn, soybeans and pork, but Iowans are at the top of the nation in literacy, and the state has the U.S.’s 14th lowest murder rate. But Iowa remains a small, rural state in the middle of the country. How representative can its voters be of the nation at large? The answer: amazingly so. In 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton won 43% of the national vote and the White House; in Iowa, Clinton won 43% of the vote. In 1996, winner Clinton carried 49% of the national vote and 50% of the Iowa vote. In 2000, Democrat Al Gore won the national vote by one-half of 1% and Iowa by one-third of 1%. Republican George

Mark Shields W Bush won reelection in 2004 with 51% of the national vote and 50% in Iowa. Democrat Barack Obama, in 2008, got 53% of the national vote and 54% of Iowans. In 2012, Obama was reelected nationally by a margin of 4% and in Iowa by 5%. In 2016, the exception: Donald Trump, who lost the national vote by 2% to Hillary Clinton, carried Iowa by a solid 10%. Yes, Iowa’s 2008 Democratic caucuses were 93% white, and those mid-American Caucasians made history by giving legitimacy and momentum to a freshman senator from Illinois, Barack Obama. In Iowa, the African American underdog won an upset victory over the heavily favored former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and was propelled to the top of the national polls. In fact, the rest of us owe Iowa our thanks. Iowans faithfully and earnestly fulfill their civil responsibilities by showing up at campaign town halls and listening and questioning the men and women who seek the White House. They take their responsibility seriously continued on page 6

n November, I was banned in Boston after speech-squelchers on the left and right forced the cancellation of my lecture at Bentley University, a small private institution. The grassroots activists who had invited me were rejected by every major event venue in the nation’s purported Cradle of Liberty. The tail-tuckers cited security concerns or jacked up their rental fees to make it prohibitively expensive to gather peacefully to discuss -- gasp! -- ideas. Lou Murray of Bostonians Against Sanctuary Cities and Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies heroically persisted, pulling together a great event at a private home attended by 100 patriots who risked their privacy, friendships and even their jobs to listen to -- gasp! -- ideas. Soon after, a group of conservative students at the University of Maine, a publicly funded school, invited me to bring my nationalist message about who’s funding the destruction of America to their campus. This prompted the College Republicans’ faculty adviser, political science professor Amy Fried, to resign in protest. That led to the de-chartering of the CR group. Why? Because I refused to disavow other young students who have asked trenchant, pesky questions at Young America’s Foundation and Turning Point USA lectures about the GOP elites’ support of wage-suppressing, job-outsourcing, Democrat voter-importing policies that put American students, workers and families last. Many of those students follow a 21-year-old nationalist named Nick Fuentes, who hosts a program (for now) on YouTube and DLive in his basement called “America First.” Because I re-

How strongly do University of Maine officials oppose the free association of college students who want to know more about my work? Yesterday, I learned from Portland Sheraton at Sable Oaks general manager Ed Palmer and others that at least one University of Maine official -- along with dozens of others cancel culture jihadists galvanized on social media by an anonymous Twitter account called “Support Maine’s Future” -- had called to complain about the students and me after they posted an event notice last Friday. United States Power Squadron Offers State Boating Safety Course

orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and now America’s Boating Club, will offer the New Jersey State Police, Marine Services Bureau approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. The course taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of NJ, and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining your New Jersey Boat Safety Certificate, will run every Tuesday evening for seven weeks which includes a night for review, and a night for the required state examination. The cost of the course is $90.00. Legislation in the state of New Jersey was passed a number of years ago requiring all boaters, 16 years of age or older, operating a power driven vessel including a personal watercraft (PWC), to complete a boating safety course. The legislation re-

Basic EXCEL is scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning March 9th from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and Intro to WORD is scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 10th from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. These classes are each six sessions and open to all women regardless of religious affiliation who want to improve their skills for job positions or who would just like to learn for their own personal use. Dad’s Love for the Old Morris Canal

By Richard Mabey Jr. y father had a great love for the history of the old Morris Canal. After all, his father, Watson Mabey, worked as an Engineer on Incline Plane Ten East in Lincoln Park. And, his grandfather, William Mabey, once owned and operated an icehouse along the banks of the canal. The Morris Canal was a page of New Jersey history that was near and dear to his heart. For over 20 years, my Dad served as the Vice President of the Lincoln Park Historical Society. And, in that time, Dad must have given well over a hundred educational talks on the old Morris Canal. Most of the talks that Dad gave, were at the Lincoln Park Museum. One of Dad’s favorite subjects, for his many talks, was explaining the intricate mechanics of how an incline

While you often hear about cold-weather fashion and beauty essentials, there is some maintenance your home needs too. Give your sanctuary some love with these five steps from the home safety experts at Kidde. Clean Your Oven Ranges and cooktops are involved in 62% of home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Stovetops and ranges, in particular, caused 87% of home fire deaths. Know Holiday Lighting Rules About 75% of holiday tree fires happen in December or January, according to the National Fire Protection Association, making now the perfect time to start being vigilant. Some rules of thumb: use flame-resistant decorations, utilize lights properly indoors or outdoors and look for electrical decorations that are approved by a nationally recognized testing lab such as UL, Intertek or CSA. In fact, common misconceptions about smoke alarm maintenance, such as hardwired alarms don’t need to be changed, can leave you more vulnerable. Smoke alarms are just like every other appliance; they need replaced periodically. This includes units that are hardwired into your home, even if you have changed the batteries. Saint Valentine’s Day; the Legend

By Henry M. Holden ost of us are familiar with St. Valentine’s Day. Every February 14, people exchange Saint Valentine’s Day messages of affection, love and devotion around the world. According to the History Channel, approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged on Valentine’s Day. That makes it the second most card sending day in the world. Why is it the most important human emotion is so poorly celebrated and lost in a ritualistic exchange of chocolates, silly cards, and stuffed animals? At least one movie, a romantic comedy, was produced in 2010 about the day. The movie follows nearly two dozen people as they find and lose love in all its many forms over the course of the title day. Critics called it, “glib, shallow, lame, and stale” so it is no wonder the movie yielded only an 18-percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. But that one bad apple should not spoil the barrel, and why the day is celebrated. The American Film Industry listed their 100

best love stories with Casablanca (1942) coming in at number one. Number 100 is Jerry McGuire (1996) and number 50 is Shakespeare in Love (1998). Strangely, in the 20 years since Shakespeare in Love there has not been a love story added to the list. The day became infamous for a short time when seven members of Chicago’s North Side Gang were gunned down in a garage in what became known as the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.” It remains one of Chicago’s darkest moments but has never darkened the spirits of lovers on that day. St. Valentine’s Day is also clouded by fanciful and mysterious legends. The traditional observance of Saint Valentine’s Day comes from an early pagan ritual of Lupercalia and Christian legends surrounding the martyrdom of a priest. Historically, Valentine’s Day has nothing to do with love. Little is known of the saint’s life, but most church historians believe he is at least the continued on page 13

Saint Valentine’s Day... continued from page 12 namesake of the holiday. If we look back on the origins of romantic love, we find the custom emerged long after the saint died. There are several legends surrounding Saint Valentine’s Day. The story of St. Valentine’s Day begins in the third century with the Roman Emperor Claudius ll. According to one legend, Claudius had prohibited marriage of young men, claiming bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine, possibly a priest, continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies until he was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death. The most documented legend is the story of a priest/ physician name Valentinus who fell in love with the daughter of Claudius’ jailer. Contrary to popular belief, he was not initially a Christian priest but a pagan healer. It was during the Roman persecution of the Christians that Emperor Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods. He had also made it a crime punishable by death to aid or associate with Christians. As a healer, it was Valentinus’ job to help people. Not even the threat of death could keep him from practicing his healing arts. Eventually they arrested him for helping Christians. Ancient Rome did not have a speedy trial in their judicial system, and Valentinus languished for months in his stone cell. While in prison, he met many Christians and saw the dignity and conviction they had in their faith. Their strength gave Valentinus the strength he needed, and he converted to Christianity.

Over the months he became friends with a jailer. The jailer, seeing Valentinus was a man of learning, asked if he could bring his blind daughter to Valentinus for lessons in Roman history. His daughter’s name was Asterius (some say Julia) and she was quick to learn. Valentinus read the history of Rome to her, described the world of nature, and taught her the Word of Jesus Christ. Asterius saw the world of Jesus through Valentinus’ eyes. She trusted him and found comfort in his quiet strength. Asterius wanted to see the world of Jesus through Valentinus eyes. “Valentinus does the Lord really hear our prayers?” she asked him one day. “Yes, my child, He hears each one.” “Do you know what I pray for every day?” She queried. “I pray that I might see. I want to see everything you’ve told me about.” “The Lord does what is best for us if we will believe in him.,” Valentinus said. Valentinus’ faith in the Lord was unswerving. “Let us kneel together and pray to the Lord Jesus Christ for strength.” As they knelt in prayer, a brilliant light invaded the prison cell. Asterius cried out, “Valentinus I can see! I can see!” “Praise be to the Lord,” exclaimed Valentinus. After calming Asterius the two knelt in a prayer of thanksgiving. In those days, declaring a miracle in the name of Jesus Christ sealed his fate. On the eve of his death, Valentinus wrote a note to Asterius urging her to stay close to

the Lord and pray for strength. Valentinus, resigned to his own death, did not admonish his captors. He wrote to Asterius that it was God’s will. He signed a note “from your Valentinus.” On February 14, 270 A.D., Valentinus was clubbed to death and beheaded near a gate in Rome now called Porto Valentinus in his memory. Asterius secretly planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave in what today continued on page 14

Saint Valentine’s Day... continued from page 13 is the Church of Praxedes. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of love and friendship. Several centuries went by and slowly Christians were able to emerge and publicly display and practice their faith. The pagan Romans, now in a minority, still celebrated the feast of Lupercalia which had been popular from around 4-B.C. The church decided it was time to replace the pagan custom with a Christian observance. The pagan celebration honoring Lupercus, was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Pan, a deity of fertility. It involved a bloody animal sacrifice, one of the many pagan customs abhorrent to the Christians. The names of teenage women were placed in a box and drawn at random by adolescent men. The feast had all the trappings of a young man’s rite of passage. Determined to end this eight-hundred-year-old practice, the church sought a saint to replace the deity Lupercus. Since Valentine’s death fell on the eve of the feast, he was a convenient candidate to usurp the popularity of Lupercalia. In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius outlawed the mid-February Lupercalia feast. The pope was clever enough to retain the random selection, aware of the Roman’s love for games of chance. In the box that was once held the names of available and single women, he replaced the names with the names of saints. Both Christian men and women drew slips of paper and were asked to emulate the life of the saint’s name they drew for the coming year.

The spiritual overseer of this “game” was St. Valentine. For the women to draw the names of the saints must have disappointed many Roman males. Rather than be cut out of the picture and replaced by a saint, the young Roman men established a custom of offering women they admired a handwritten greeting of affection. They tied it into the drawing of the saint’s names and the greetings eventually acquired St. Valentine’s name. With the passage of still more time Christianity spread throughout the world. The Romans and other pagans slowly relinquish their customs and replaced them with the Lord’s word. The affectionate greeting also spread with Christianity. By the 16th century, Valentine’s Day cards had all but eliminated the lottery of saints. St. Francis deSales, Bishop of Geneva, try to reinstate the lottery but with no success. Instead of the cards disappearing, they proliferated and became more decorative. By the 18th century, greeting cards with Cupid, the cherub, armed with arrows dipped in a love potion became a popular Valentine’s Day image in England. He became associated with the holiday because in Roman mythology, he is the son of Venus, goddess of love and beauty. The cards did not become widespread in the United States until around 1850 when a New England native began mass-reproducing them. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, and heroic figure but above all, a romantic figure.

Today many of us send modern Valentine messages to reaffirm what Jean Valjean said in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, “The supreme happiness in life is in the conviction that we are all loved.” Let us make this month not just a month of love, but the happy beginning to a year of loving and being loved and fulfil the Scripture the apostle Paul advised us, “Let all that you do be done in love,” (Cor. 16:14 NASB) In the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…” Give someone your message of affection on Saint Valentine’s Day in other ways that may be even more loving, memorable and lasting. Go back to when it all started by creating a second first date. Order the same foods, request the same songs, and see how many details you can recall from your first kiss. After dinner head for a karaoke bar. After all, what better way to celebrate your chemistry than singing classic-couples’ duets such as Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” together. Okay, the weather may not be great, so you don’t want to go out. Create a themed dinner and movie night at home. Find the movie Roman Holiday and watch Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fall in love. Of course, you’ll need to accompany this with an Italian meal such as Lasagna, spaghetti and meat balls or your own creative dish. Remember we may give without loving, but we cannot love without giving.
