By Steve Sears any towns throughout New Jersey and the United States rightly honor their hometown or resident war heroes for bravely protecting and serving our great nation. Livingston is one of those many, many towns, and to gather a glimpse of how proud the Township of Livingston is of its veterans of war and current active military personnel, one need only visit the main foyer of Township Hall. A huge list of names in white lettering currently fill 16 black boards backed by rich, brown wood. Some of those names may be recognizable. They may be your neighbors, old friends, perhaps even family members. Welcome to Livingston’s Military Wall of Honor, which is prominently placed in and viewable to the public during all hours that Town-

ship Hall is open. A visit is encouraged for all. “The Wall is important to the Township as a re-

Military Wall of Honor... continued from front page presume to state their reasons, but many have told me how proud they are to be on the Wall and (humbly) grateful for the recognition.” The Military Wall of Honor was "commissioned" January 1, 2000, and there are approximately 2,460 names currently on the Wall. The Livingston Township Council and Lewis, Township Manager, wished to update the Wall and keep it current, but it takes a wee bit of work. An invitation to apply for inclusion was made to veterans on the township website, but certain requirements had to be met. For example, the individual applying has to be an Honorably Discharged Veteran or are currently serving in any branch of the military for at least 12 months and are or have been a Livingston resident at any time. The township asked that names and information be submitted by August 9, 2019 to add to the strong number already adorning the Wall. “The date,” says Lewis, “was selected to be several months out from when the call for new names was first publicized, to allow time for submissions.” Creating and updating the Wall has occurred at the beginning of subsequent decades. “The Wall originated in 2000,” says Lewis, “and was updated around 2010 with the opening of the new Town Hall, and this update keeps us on a 10-year cycle.” Applicants had to submit a copy of their DD-214 form, the years they have or had lived in Livingston, and how their name should appear on the plaque. No specific plans have been made but anticipated is a ceremonial "unveiling" of the new names when they are ready.

“The Wall is just one of the many ways that Livingston has, and will continue to, honor our veterans who bravely served our country,” says Lewis.

Christian Evangelical Church in Livingston (CECL) Celebrates 45 Years Since Establishment

By Steve Sears everend Moses Yang remembers everything vividly. In 1973, he had been asked by several Chinese Christian families to establish a Christian Evangelical Church in West Orange – and he eventually did. But a near tragic event, and God speaking to him through scripture, was the final encouragement to the notion bearing fruit. “It was very bad,” says Yang, who at age 47 was involved in a terrible car accident. “The accident was severe; the car was totaled.” His son hit the windshield in the accident, and his daughter was so scared, she ran from the car when it stopped in the middle of the road. That evening, he went home and spoke to God, asking him if his survival meant he should indeed establish the requested church. He found the following in Psalm 66:12: "Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water, but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place." “That was the verse that God gave to me,” Yang recalls. “I was rejoicing. It was God’s will.” In 1974, Christian Evangelical Church opened in West Orange, and eventually moved to Livingston in 2006. Pastor Stephen Lim has shepherded the congregation since 1996. “Before I finished my seminary studies at Western Seminary in Scottsdale, Arizona, Rev. Yang called me to serve in this church. Aside from pastoring this church in

Livingston, I worked also at our Mission headquarters as administrator. I received a Senate Resolution from New Jersey Senator (Joe) Pennacchio for my service.” CECL has about 75 members, and that attendance swells to more than 100 during special services like Thanksgiving and Christmas. The CECL was the first in the Garden State. There are also CEC churches in South Africa, Asia (Japan and Taiwan), Europe (Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Spain), and in the United States (New York and California in addition to New Jersey). The CECL gives back to the community in many ways. “We donated books and made donations to the Battered Women agency,” says Lim. “We collected gifts and money

for agencies like Feed the Hungry and Operation Christmas Child (gifts for the poor). Another thing, as a good neighbor, our church allows the Cerebral Palsy School to use our parking lot for their events like fundraising. We are considering getting involved in Habitat for Humanity.” The CECL also hosts a summer program for kids, Vacation Bible School, focusing on sharing the good news about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “From time to time, Livingston High School would sponsor a food festival at their gym, and we participated in this event,” Lim adds. Lim is very fond of Rev. Yang and his development of the CEC churches. “Rev. Yang has the heart to share the good news about Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He travels a lot to share Christ and bring people to God. Wherever he goes, he would establish churches so that many more can be believers and followers of Christ.” Christian Evangelical Church of Livingston welcomes all to join its congregation. “We are here to serve the community - physical and spiritual needs,” says Lim. “We have people from all walks of life. We have a diverse congregation. We have American-born Chinese, Chinese from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Taiwan and Singapore, Cantonese, Filipino, and Caucasian. Livingston Teen, Team Polaris Capture Awards at World Robotics Competition in Australia

By Jerry Del Priore ivingston rising junior Julian Lee, 16, who attends the Pingry School in Basking Ridge, competed with Team Polaris robotics team (rising junior Jeffery Cheng and rising senior Alexander Lisenko) at the 2019 World Robotics Competition in Sydney, Australia, from July 2 to July 7, winning two awards in the process. Though it wasn’t easy, it turned out to be an experience of a lifetime for Lee, a key member of Team Polaris, and the rest of the squad, as it captured third place in the Individual Team Competition, as well as the Best Rescue Engineering Strategy Award at RoboCup 2019’s pre-college league, RobocupJunior (RCJ) -- a world-renowned, AI-oriented tournament involving research to professional work. Before entering the competition in Sydney, Team Polaris qualified at an event in Leipzig, Germany, which Lee said helped better prepare the squad for the rigors of robotics battle. “My team previously qualified for the RoboCup Junior International Competition in Leipzig,” Lee said. “We were in awe and felt overwhelmed by the level of competition, which was much higher than anticipated. This prior experience was a major factor in our performance this year, and we learned a lot through the event about how to better prepare for the next competition by observing the other teams. Going from our somewhat rookie performance in Leipzig to placing third in Sydney definitely sweetened the (Best Rescue Engineering Strategy) victory.”

While the Sydney experience required a tremendous amount of skill and technical knowledge, Julian's father, Anderson Lee spoke of the mental fortitude needed to rebound from disappointment to be successful at the World Robotics Competition. "This three-day, eight-round competition is as much about grit as it is about technical knowhow,” Anderson Lee explained. “It’s great to see Julian’s team bouncing back from an early setback and finish in the top three amongst the best in the world.” The engineering work required at all RCJ leagues is extremely challenging and is usually practiced at universities and even at the professional level, according to Storming Robots -- a year-round robotics engineering and computer science educational program for gifted youth from grades four to 12 in Branchburg. “Julian, alike his two other teammates, Jeffery Cheng and Alexander Lisenko from Bridgewater Township, are all remarkably bright students,” collective members of Storming Robotics said in a statement. “They are in the Maze Open League, which is particularly challenging as it involves search algorithms usually introduced only at the college-level,” Storming Robots continued. “What sets this robot competition apart from many others is full automation required to adapt dynamic changes in variables presented in the competition field.” cont. on page 7

Back in June, the team had been extremely busy preparing for the competition. But all of their hard, diligent work paid tremendous dividends, as Team Polaris brought home the glorious hardware against the best, young student tech-savvy minds from around the globe. Although Team Polaris had put forth a championship effort before the event, the three aforementioned students have spent a great deal of time of their short lives preparing for such competitions, just like the one they competed in, in Sydney. Elizabeth Mabrey, who received the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Programs’ Distinguished Teachers Award, sang the praises of Team Polaris and the rest of the competitors in the tournament. “All of these three students have spent the intervening years receiving robotics engineering and computer science education starting from the fourth or fifth grade,” Mabrey, Director and Founder of Storming Robots, said. “Such world-class robotics competition is not for the faint-hearted. These gifted teens must possess the ability to think on their feet, to resolve difficult challenges independently, and to create effective solutions without adult supervision from more experienced professionals.” “Winning or not, hats off to all teams who have demonstrated self-Initiative and perseverance in challenging themselves,” she added. “These impressive youngsters demonstrated their ability to think independently and be effective problem solvers.”

Garden State Fondo 2019 Will Remember Life of Founder Marty Epstein

By: Greg Ziegler s summer fades and the calendar turns to September, it’s time again for the Garden State Fondo (formerly the NJ Gran Fondo) held annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day since 2011. The Garden State Fondo is a one day bicycle ride that begins on the Green in Morristown and travels the most scenic and bucolic roads that North Jersey has to offer. This year the organizers expect over 2,500 participants, making it one of the largest Gran Fondos in the country, with riders from over 30 states as well as participants from other countries. The term “Gran Fondo” is loosely translated from Italian to mean “big ride” and this year’s event really lives up to the name. This year’s edition of the Garden State Fondo offers five different routes designed to accommodate riders of every level. There is a double metric century of 200 miles named the “Estremo”; the traditional “Gran” route of 107 miles; the “Medio” route of 75 miles, which was named one of the best rides in NJ by the editors of Bicycle Magazine; the “Piccolo” route of 42 miles; and the “Breve” route of 18 miles. The Garden State Fondo is designed to offer participants the opportunity to enjoy a day of cycling on some of the most scenic roads New Jersey has to offer. For those riders who enjoy a little competition while on the bike, all the routes, (aside from the Breve), offer timed climbs where riders can challenge themselves and compete with other riders for designation as King or Queen of the Mountain, via a point system. Other than these timed sections riders are encouraged to simply ride and enjoy the scenery and support as there is no special award for finishing first. Each route provides support stations strategically located along the course. Along with the standard fare provided to cyclists, this year’s rest stops will offer wood-fired pizza, affogatos (a shot of espresso over a scoop of vanilla ice cream) cannoli’s, s’mores, and a number of other items not typically found at ride support stations. The Garden State Fondo was established by Marty Epstein (of Marty’s Reliable Cycle)

whose vision was to showcase the amazing riding that is available in northern New Jersey by creating a fun and challenging cycling event and to also be able to give back to the community. Epstein passed away earlier this year. The Garden State Fondo has raised over $1.25 million dollars for both local and national charities. One of the beneficiaries of this year’s event will be the Raritan Headwaters Association, a non-profit conservation organization that protects water in our rivers, streams, and homes. The Garden State Fondo covers over 140 miles of roads through 25 different municipalities in Morris, Somerset, and Hunterdon counties. Routes will go through Morristown, Chester, Mendham, Bernardsville, Far Hills, Peapack, Gladstone, Pottersville, Tewksbury, Califon, Clinton, Pittstown, Milford, Spruce Run, Long Valley, Randolph, and Morris Plains. The organizers work diligently with local authorities to secure the permits necessary to ensure the safety of both the cyclists, and the citizens, of each town the ride passes through. New Jersey has a long and distinguished place in the history of cycling with races being held throughout the state in the late 1800s and continuing into the 1900s with the Tour de Somerville which held its inaugural race in 1940. The Garden State Fondo is a terrific addition to the history and legacy of New Jersey cycling. For riders registered for the event the Garden State Fondo is offering training rides on Sundays that leave from Marty’s Reliable in Morristown, and from Strictly Bicycles in Fort Lee. Bike rentals are available for those riders who have the inspiration but not the equipment. There is a ride and a route for everyone and no reason not to participate in this year’s edition of the Garden State Fondo. Elisa Madorsky of Livingston Receives Marion Medow of Livingston Receives Distinguished Award from NCJW/Essex Distinguished Award from NCJW/Essex

lisa Madorsky of Livingston, was the recipient of the Henrietta Weiser Emerging Leader Award, presented by NCJW/ Essex to a promising member who has demonstrated leadership potential. The award was presented at the NCJW/Essex Annual Installation and Awards Evening, which took place recently at Cedar Hill Country Club in Livingston. Madorsky has worked tirelessly in her commitment to NCJW/Essex and demonstrated talent at taking on leadership roles. She first became involved at the Back 2 School Store in 2014 and has since increased her involvement with this event as well as others. She spearheaded a Lunch and Learn on gun violence prevention with Sandy Hook Promise,

and later joined the Anti-Human Trafficking Committee, working to bring art supplies to victims of trafficking housed at Covenant House in Newark. Additionally, she chaired Mitzvah-ina-Minute (MIM), offering quick community service projects that make a difference, and in 2018 assumed the role as Vice President

of Advocacy, a position she will continue in the year to come. “Elisa has a unique blend of infectious enthusiasm mixed with a very special gift of persuasion,” said her friend and NCJW/Essex member Lisa Santola who introduced her. “She uses her superpowers to encourage members, new and old, that they are ready for new challenges and to get more involved.” “Someone recently said to me: Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you; spend a lot of time with them and it will change your life,” reflected Madorsky upon receiving her award. “I have found that group of people at NCJW, and it has changed my life!”

Presbyterian Church of Livingston Member Celebrates Birthday 100

By Stevae Sears elen McNerney, a member of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Livingston since 1952, celebrated her 100th birthday on July 7, 2019. During the Sunday, June 30, 10:30 a.m. Worship service, McNerney addressed the congregation, and at 12:00 p.m. a special 100th birthday luncheon was celebrated by 65 people, including McNerney’s granddaughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Vincent. The luncheon was not a surprise party. It was a planned event with Helen. “We were all counting the days,” says McNerney, a widow, who for many years was married to her loving late husband, Ted, and also lived a while in Argentina following his job transfer. “I was getting worried that I wouldn’t make it. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone.” She didn’t. She made it. McNerney, a vibrant human being who currently lives at Morris View Health Center in Morris Plains, has seen many changes while a 67-year member of Presbyterian Church of Livingston. “It’s been a long while,” McNerney says with a chuckle. “Oh, my goodness,” she says, “before we had this beautiful church, in small rooms we would have our Sunday school, and when that was over, we would rearrange everything so we could have our services in the same room. It was a big change when we finally got our beautiful little church. For a long time, (Reverend) Bill Ackerman was the preacher when I joined.” Ackerman, founder of the church, served as its leader for 33 years. “We also had a Woman’s Association; we used to go to each woman’s house once a month, and gradually it got less and less, and we would have it in the church. It kind of dwindled down there after a while. I did that and I

taught Sunday school there – I think I had more children in my class than we have in the church now.” Reverend Daniel Martian, who has been Pastor since 2005, also says that McNerney used to be one of the congregation’s liturgists. “She would read scripture and do the Call to Prayer, and read the prayers during some of our service, and she did a great job. A nice clear voice, the spacing and timing of the whole thing – she did a great, great job. I loved serving with her.” “We started talking about this back in February,” continues Rev. Martian. “I went to visit Helen and we were talking about birthdays, and her 100th was coming up. Anyway, we started talking about this and I went to my Deacons and I mentioned it to them, and my Deacons started to plan a wonderful celebration of life for Helen with her in the worship service, where she gave us some words of wisdom, which included: don’t worry, things usually work out.” “It’s not worth it worrying about small things, and just take it one day at a time,” McNerney adds. “Helen gave us words of wisdom,” says Rev. Martian, “and the congregation was very receptive to what she was saying. I reiterate, I think a lot of her passion for people, her passion for the church here, really came through.” McNerney, who also in the past has delivered flowers to shut-ins (“They were big baskets of flowers – almost as big as me!” she says) and has always had a get up and go attitude, is also a book author. Jersey Girl: A Book of My Life, was published in 2014 and is available on Amazon. Helen McNerney, in her words, has lived a “very simple life.” Her advice to all? “Make the best of things,” she says.

The Humane Rescue Alliance and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center Announce Merger

he Humane Rescue Alliance of Washington, DC, and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center of Madison, announced that the organizations are merging to create the first regional, community-based, multi-state animal welfare organization in the nation. The combined group will provide direct rescue and care of animals in need, cruelty investigations and local animal control services, robust regional community support programs that allow pets to stay with their families, and a premier transport program that invests in partner communities to solve pet overpopulation sustainably and nationwide. The merger will leverage and export the strengths of its founding organizations, which rest on the professional competence of their staffs and the depths of their roots in their communities. Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of the Humane Rescue Alliance and a nationally-recognized leader in animal welfare, will lead the combined organization as President and CEO. “By unifying two industry-leading organizations, we are building an alliance that can tackle the systemic challenges facing animals in our region and beyond, with the goal of

saving more lives,” said LaFontaine. In 2016, LaFontaine oversaw the merger of the Washington Humane Society and Washington Animal Rescue League, resulting in the formation of the Humane Rescue Alliance – the first unified organization in a major urban area to provide all the animal welfare programs and services to the community. “The merger of WHS and WARL was never a final destination. Rather, it was an expression of the imperative that animal welfare organizations must work more collaboratively, and rather than compete, they should share a sense of responsibility for the overall population of vulnerable animals,” LaFontaine added. “The future of animal welfare is about cooperation, consolidation, a deepening of community support, and the sensible balancing of resources and animal populations between partnering animal welfare groups.” St. Hubert’s WayStation program has emerged as a bestin-class animal transport program, creating unprecedented collaboration among shelter organizations to address animal population disparities between communities, and to provide a critical lifeline in times of natural and manmade

disasters. The combined organization will invest further in the WayStation program and will continue to connect communities that have extra capacity for placing and caring for homeless animals with communities where animal overpopulation remains a significant problem. The WayStation program is a vehicle for animal welfare groups to increase their collective capacity to address the challenges facing people and animals in their respective communities. According to LaFontaine, “By enriching the organizations on both ends of animal transports, we can weave a safety net for animals in every corner of the country. Today is a happy day for HRA, St. Hubert’s, and our 83 partner organizations throughout the nation.” The merger was initiated by conversations between LaFontaine and Heather Cammisa, the long-time CEO of St. Hubert’s whose vision and dedication enabled the organization to become a regional powerhouse. It has been approved by unanimous votes of both the HRA and St. Hubert’s boards of directors, and the organizations have been working at the leadership level for the past several months to lay the groundwork for a smooth and efficient combination.

This Design Trend is Coming Back

esign trends come and go, but some have a funny way of resurfacing years after they first became p o p u l a r. Homeowners who may have been considering renovating their home to remove a design element they believe to be passé might want to see if that feature has experienced a resurgence in popularity. In fact, one of the more derided home decor trends of yesteryear has slowly crept back into style, albeit in moderation. Wood paneling is back and better than ever, advise many design professionals. It’s the formerly ugly duckling that filled homes starting in the 1950s, creating drab dens and faux-wood family rooms. Paneling had long been an element of choice because it is relatively easy to install and can camouflage problem walls in

a home, like those covered in boisterous wallpaper prints. W o o d paneling reach the peak of its popularity in the 1970s, and since then homeowners have been tearing down these faux offenders for years or masking them in paint to brighten up spaces. However, the experts at Apartment Therapy report that wood paneling in shades of brown are making a comeback in cozy spots such as dens or studies. The warm tones of wood paneling elicit a retro vibe. But unlike their fake predecessors, today’s paneled walls are being outfitted in real wood, making them more eco-friendly and stylish than ever before. Designers have flocked to reclaimed wood and veneer panelings to incorporate them into design elements. And while wood paneling used to be hung vertically, design-

ers now experiment with hanging paneling. Many people no longer use paneling to cover an entire space. Paneling is used sparingly as an accent wall or another feature for character. Wood walls can be stained in a rich mahogany to look upscale or be weathered and rustic. Homeowners ready to re-embrace wood paneling can choose to enhance one wall in a room. Think about the space above a

fireplace or a strip of wall behind a sitting chair and side table. Paneling also can serve as a headboard behind a bed in a master suite. Painted horizonally, paneling can add dimension and texture to walls, even in a bathroom. Wood paneling is slowly making a comeback, proving that no design trend every truly goes away.

Paper Mill Trained Actress, Ali Stroker, Makes Tony Awards History

By Stefanie Sears li Stroker made history at the 73rd Annual Tony Awards hosted by James Corden at Radio City Music Hall on June 9. She was the first person who uses a wheelchair to ever be nominated and receive a Tony Award for acting, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Ado Annie Carnes in the reimagined 2019 Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! Also nominated alongside her in the category was Lilli Cooper as Julie Nichols in Tootsie, Amber Gray as Persephone in Hadestown, Sarah Stiles as Sandy Lester in Tootsie, and Mary Testa as Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! Past notable credits of Stroker’s include being a finalist on The Glee Project, a guest star on“Glee, originating the role of Anna in Deaf West’s 2015 revival of Spring Awakening, and playing Olive Ostrovsky in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in 2011 at Paper Mill Playhouse, where she had trained in the Summer Musical Theater Conservatory program. At the Tony Awards, Stroker performed Ado Annie’s solo number I Cain’t Say No and then Oklahoma with the rest of the cast. Much like the liberated Ado Annie, she is unapologetically herself. At age 2, Stroker suffered injuries from a car accident that left her paralyzed from the chest down due to a spinal cord injury. Finding it difficult to participate in extracurric-

ular and athletic activities growing up, she discovered at age 7 that she could act and sing just like anyone else. She starred in a fun backyard production of Annie, directed by her 12-year-old neighbor Rachel Antonoff. For the first time, she was in control of why people were looking at her. She was powerful because she was a star. Originally from Ridgewood, Stroker attended New York University to study drama. Though she has faced some difficulty in the busy city, such as being unable to hail a cab, managing New York gave her the confidence to handle any surroundings. When she was first cast as Ado Annie, the Circle in the Square Theatre was not equipped for someone with a wheelchair to get onstage. On Tony Award night, Stroker waited in the wings of the stage when her category was being announced, wearing a yellow gown created by Antonoff, now a fashion designer. Stroker’s victory raises awareness and makes the need for representation and accessibility for those with disabilities that much more apparent. Upon receiving her award, Stroker lifted up her trophy, stared into the camera, and while trying to hold back tears, said, “This award is for every kid watching tonight who has a disability, who has a limitation, or a challenge, who has been waiting to see themselves represented in this arena. You ARE.” This statement was met with applause and cheers,

with a very determined and satisfied Stroker nodding at the camera with a smile forming on her face.

Pay attention to cyberbullying. Those who use cell phones, internet or other devices for social media interaction open themselves up to the latest form of bullying. Parents, be aware and get involved. Teach your child proper usage of these devices and reinforce that sending any text, message or photo that is cruel, hateful or threatening is as harmful as face to face bullying. According to a survey of American travelers from vacation rental app and website Vrbo, people are united by a common desire to travel with friends and family. In fact, 52% of respondents said a family vacation is their reason for travel in 2019, and more people said they will travel with a group of four or more this year than last year. That’s where the generational similarities end, however. Determining where to go and what you’ll do depends quite a bit on your age. Your stage of life significantly impacts the places you dream about visiting, the reasons you travel and what you look for when you get there, according to the survey. What to look for in a destination Your definition of a dream vacation is likely to shift along with variables like your life stage, income and available free time. Limitations in any of those areas may make a certain destination a far-off dream during one stage of life but an attainable retreat

If you’re like most travelers, keeping connected is a major requirement. In fact, 75% of respondents listed access to the internet via WiFi as an important amenity when traveling, outranking traditional must-haves like TV and air-conditioning, according to the survey.
