Vetfest Presents Music and Food Trucks This May

By: Megan Roche s winter comes to an end, people are itching to breakout those lawn chairs and blankets, longing for days of sunny weather and blue skies. On May 3 (raindate: May 17), head out to Roxbury’s Horseshoe Lake for a day of fun that benefits the greater community of homeless veterans. Rich Goldberg, the mastermind behind Vetfest, was looking for a way to continue his efforts in helping the state’s homeless veteran population. Through his work volunteering for Community Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Goldberg has come to know many veterans throughout the area who have simply fallen on hard times. With a passion for music as well, Goldberg combined the two and decided on a concert to benefit them. The first ever Vetfest was held in 2019 and was a major success, raising over $24,000. On May 3, beginning at 12:00 noon, Horseshoe

Lake at Succasunna will be grooving, all for a good cause. Vetfest has the best of food trucks and talent coming together to help New Jersey’s homeless veterans. Goldberg is encouraging families to come and spend the day, with lawn chairs and blankets in tow. “Hang out for the day, there is going to be so much there to do for kids and adults. This is all about our veterans. The important thing is to give these vets who have given so

much for us, we want to give them a great day, all while raising money to support them. To be able to give them a great afternoon, just like anyone else coming out, that’s what we ultimately want to do.” Goldberg stated proudly. At the time this article was written, bands were still signing up to come and donate their time with a performance. Currently scheduled are The Frontiers, a Journey tribute band, A Brothers Revival,

an Allman Brothers tribute band, Sensational Soul Cruisers, a Motown and R&B band, The Best of the Eagles, an Eagles tribute band, and New York State of Mind, a Billy Joel tribute band. “I’ve gotten to know so many of these veterans throughout our area. These veterans are humble people and grateful people. All they want to do is get back on their feet, and if we can give them a little step up, a little assistance, that’s really what it’s all about. They did their job and went out and served and did everything for us, and now what I ask people to do, is just to come out and have a fun day.” Goldberg said. Food trucks include; the Empanada Truck, Cubano X-Press, Kona Ice, Jersey Rollz, Clubhouse Dogs, Cas’s Polish Food, Thai Food Addict, Bearded One BBQ, and Wood Fired Pizza. There will also be free entertainment for the kiddies in the family with bounce houses. Tickets are on sale continued on page 5

Seton Hall University and WSOU Honor Bob Ley, Legendary Sportscaster and 1976 Alum

By: Megan Roche hile he’s won many awards and gone on to major networks and has anchored many major sporting events, Bob Ley has never forgot where he came from. The Bloomfield, NJ native got his start at Seton Hall University and he was recently honored by the folks at the school’s radio station, WSOU. Ley fell in love with the journalism profession long before he entered the classrooms at Seton Hall. From his early beginnings, providing commentary as a correspondent for local newspaper, the Bloomfield boy knew that he wanted to be on the radio. A first-generation college grad, Seton Hall was where it all started. “I was into sports and I was doing a little sports work about Seton Hall on a small radio station and I was a correspondent for lots of local newspapers on high school sports. I knew I wanted to study journalism and WSOU was the most visible arm of the school that I could see. WSOU is the entire reason I went to Seton Hall,” Ley said. Ley began his freshman year at Seton Hall in 1972. After joining WSOU, he involved himself fully in the station, taking on many jobs and responsibilities. During his years at WSOU, Ley has served as sports director, program director, and engineer. He also produced play by play content for basketball and baseball games. After graduating, he landed several jobs in the New York and New Jersey area and also served as the PA for the New York Cosmos soccer team. In

1979, Ley began with a new sports channel start up, leaving his comfortable job at Suburban Cable TV 3. That sports channel start up? The network now known as ESPN. “I was coming from a job at Suburban Cablevision TV 3 where I joined the station from blueprints and saw it through to where we were winning major awards. I saw the benefit of being with an organization from the drop and having a blank canvas and having the chance to do whatever your abilities and see where the experiences will take you. I took the ESPN offer which now would have been a no brainer, but 40 years ago, it was a no brainer in the other direction,” Ley said. Ley returned to his alma mater on Feb. 23 as the Seton Hall Pirates took on the Saint John’s Red Storm to provide commentary on the game played at Prudential Center. This was Ley’s first time back in the broadcast booth since he graduated in 1976. Ley was joined on the broadcast by current WSOU Sports Director, Dalton Allison, and commentator Michael Daly. “I was so excited to have Bob join us at the broadcast booth,” Allison said. “Just sitting next to him and working with him, I was so impressed by his cadence and play by play work. The day was a great day for the WSOU family. To be able to have a brother like him in the professional industry, made the day so awesome. It was a great day to be a Pirate. For me personally, this was a dream come true. I continued on page 8

students on the current staff and young alums. It made me feel overwhelmed and what I tried to leave with them was that we all have something to offer to this world and to this school. It’s all about staying involved and helping those who come after you and giving values to the programs there.” Ley said. WSOU General Manager Mark Maben was quick to note what Ley and other alumni mean to the radio station and why honoring Ley was so important. “I hear alum after alum tell me that no matter what they have gone on to do, their experience at WSOU has been extremely helpful to them in their careers. I think that reflects the high standard that everyone at the station holds themselves to. Bob speaks often about the critical role WSOU played in launching his career and through the decades he has taken the time to mentor and encourage generations of students who were following in his footsteps at WSOU,” Maben said. “With Bob entering retirement, we felt it was important for the station to honor him for both his extraordinary career and all that he has done for the station and the campus community.”

It was a surreal moment for myself and also for my family as well.” Before the game, Ley was honored with a reception where alumni gathered to thank him for all his service through the years. Amongst attendees were classmates that he had not seen in over 40 years. The folks at Seton Hall also held a pregame ceremony on the court to recognize his career. When he retired from ESPN in June of 2019, Ley had notched many holes in his career belt. Ley has anchored a number of World Cups, covered the World Series earthquake in 1989, called the World Cup in Paris when the French team was victorious, being part of SportsCenter and Outside the Lines since the beginning, and so many more. While he has had an incredible 40-year career with the network, Ley has always remained true to the Seton Hall student run radio station, WSOU. “It was a great experience to be sitting at the WSOU desk and to be calling a game. There were also so many people at this event to honor me, some of them I haven’t seen in years. It was also great to see the

Celebrate Earth Day with April 18 Stream Cleanup

Helpers of all ages are needed, and the cleanup will be held rain or shine. “It’s absolutely true that many hands make light work,” said Cindy Ehrenclou, executive director of the nonprofit watershed watchdog. “In just three hours last year, 1,700 volunteers removed 18 tons of trash and recyclables from 46 sites in Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris counties. They made a big impact in a very short time.” This year, the 30th anniversary of the RHA Stream Cleanup falls only a few days before the 50th anniversary of Earth Day – a day dedicated to supporting environmental protection and celebrating clean air, water and land. “The Stream Cleanup is in keeping with the spirit of Earth Day,” said Rebekah Buczynski, RHA’s Stream Cleanup coordinator. “Not only does it beautify local stream corridors, it also protects drinking water supplies and prevents litter from washing downstream to the Raritan Bay and Atlantic Ocean,

Livingston Resident and Duke University Student Advocates for Brain Aneurysm Research

By: Evan Wechman ivingston resident and Duke University student Justin Gelman was just like his peers before suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm in his dorm room in North Carolina. Everything for him and his family changed that eventful February day in 2018. According to the Duke Brain Aneurysm fund which Gelman organized after his recovery, nearly half a million people worldwide die of ruptured brain aneurysms every year, and half the victims are under 50. In the U.S, approximately 30,000 people suffer a brain aneurysm rupture with four in 10 cases being deadly. ing his studies in hopes of going to medical school. Many people, according to Gelman, don’t understand the difference between a ruptured and an unruptured aneurysm. However, as he points out, an aneurysm is a bulging in the wall of an artery resulting in an abnormal widening. Many people live their whole life with an unruptured aneurysm without knowing they even had one. There is danger when the aneurysm ruptures, causing a hemorrhage, where there is bleeding in the space between the brain and its hard-outer covering. This can deprive the brain of oxygen and other nutrients, eventually resulting in a stroke because of the lack of blood supply. Gelman is fully aware

now of what he went through and is grateful for the love showed to him by family and friends back home in Livingston. He humbly states “without the support of these phenomenal people in Livingston, my parents wouldn’t have been able to survive this ordeal. And if my parents couldn’t, I wouldn’t have been able to either.” During that near fatal incident two years ago when Gelman was only 19, something significant does stand out for him. He recalls that he had an extreme headache and was unsure of what to do. “I fought with my parents on the phone, explaining how I don’t need to go to the hospital, it was just a headache, it would go away.” Since the headache felt

so extreme, he and his parents agreed that Gelman would go to the hospital and call them when he ar-

rived. After several hours had passed, Robert and Lori Gelman called the Duke University Police to check

on their son. He was found semi-conscious in his dorm room, and an ambulance continued on page 12

Gelman, now 21 years old, remembers that his parents flew down “when I went to the emergency room with no idea that they wouldn’t return home for a month. They came with nothing but an overnight bag, obviously not expecting that I would be diagnosed with a ruptured brain aneurysm.” Gelman who had to undergo surgery to prevent further damage, states that the entire ordeal was a life lesson. After the successful surgery, “I recall thinking about my entire life up to that moment. What I realized was, I hadn’t real-

ly accomplished anything yet. That if I died right then and there, my legacy would have been a sad story about a kid who dies young. That thought terrified me; the thought of dying before becoming a doctor, finding the love of my life, seeing my kids grow up.” Justin started to think more about his legacy and woke up each morning with a purpose. He say’s “I’m trying to live every day with the focus that my actions are contributing to the life I want to live, the purpose I see for myself, and the world I want to create.” The pre-med student has made a great impact on many lives. Due to the exceptional care he received at the hospital, he created the Duke Brain Aneurysm

Fund which helps educate others and raise money to assist those who suffered an aneurysm. Gelman often speaks in public about his experiences and offers camaraderie to fellow survivors who are looking for help. He wants survivors and their loved ones to know that he “went through it too and they’re not alone, that they can make a recovery and that we can make a difference for future survivors.” Though Gelman is leaning towards a career in neurosurgery, he knows that whatever kind of doctor he becomes, he wants “this experience to help improve my ability to care for my patients”and to “pay forward the love and care received during my darkest time.”

By Steve Sears ditya Desai, a Livingston High School junior, was recently awarded a $5,000 grant for forming a financial literacy workshop which has since become a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization. His 2018 founding of Economics Education Initiative (EEI) came about after a surprising discovery he made in the slums of Queens in New York City during a public health research internship he was pursuing two years ago. “Our project focused on addressing health disparities in the Hispanic populace, and as a result, I was administering a survey to gauge the health decision making abilities of the impoverished residents there,” he recalls. The survey, which consisted of two simple questions, ‘How much would you spend on a needed medication?’ and ‘How much would you spend on your favorite pair of new shoes?’, unveiled shocking results. “Over 75% of all respondents, 98% of whom were African American, were unwilling to pay a higher price for an essential prescription than a new pair of (Air) Jordans,

Armed with this newfound insight, I aspired to approach the issue with my own organization committed to mitigating financial illiteracy, and the rest is history.” Desai is the recipient of a special grant, part of the money going to fund a startup publication. “Over the past year, EEI has been fortunate to be named a winner of the United Way Worldwide Rep My City Challenge and receive a $5,000 grant from the organization to promote our financial literacy curriculum. We’ve also received backing from Google, T-Mobile, and other smaller financial institutions in New Jersey. The plan with the $5,000 grant, specifically, is to create BizStarter Magazine, a teen entrepreneur’s bible that will feature tips, insights, and journeys from some of the top business leaders across the United States.” The launch of the magazine, currently set for August 2020, goes hand-in-hand with an entrepreneurial boot-camp Desai is hosting this summer in continued on page 14

Livingston High School ... continued from page 13 Newark and Montclair. “Not only will the magazine be distributed at our camp, but also a series of national entrepreneurship incubators including Next Gen, Startup Island, and the Spark Tank at Dwight School (in New York City).” Since Desai feels financial literacy in itself can be a mundane topic to address and embrace, he tooled EEI workshops to be a fun and interesting activity for high school students. EEI specifically does this by breaking down their two-hour financial literacy workshops into a preliminary simulation and subsequent concept breakdown. Desai explains. “Our simulations range from a raisin game that gives each team of students 10 raisins as mock money for a budget

to a global trade simulation that uses our novel playing cards to model economic value across the international sphere. Of course, the second half of our workshop focuses on linking back the momentous activity that students were indulged in into the tangible fiscal concepts (scarcity, imports/exports, asset allocation) that they will take away from our workshops and mobilize in their own lives.” Desai believes that financial literacy is a critical skill that all high schoolers need to be endowed with, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds. “However,” he attests, “I’ve seen a lack of financial literacy routinely perpetuates the cyclical nature of poverty, and this is what particularly motivates
