A Thanksgiving Story

By Richard Mabey Jr. n the midst of the Summer of 2018, I began taking my mom to Bingo every Thursday afternoon. Mom lived with me, in our gated community in Central Florida. Playing Bingo was a fun time, for both, Mom and myself. We met some very interesting people. And, we both learned the agony of waiting for just one number to be called to complete the horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line to be able to joyfully call out “Bingo!” I think it was in the beginning of 2018 that Mom and I began attending classes, at our gated community, for developing skill and style for writing children’s stories. I remember that Mom excelled in the class. She made a lot of friends and people enjoyed hearing her array of children’s stories. It was in early 2018 that Mom needed to depend upon a wheelchair to get around. The arthritis in her hips had gotten so bad that she was hardly able to walk. Mom’s cardiologist would not authorize that she was stable enough for hip replacement surgery, because of the degree of her heart murmur due to Aortic Stenosis. In the middle of November of 2019, Mom had heart surgery to replace her Aortic Valve. There were post-operative complications and Mom needed to stay in the hospital. Thanksgiving Day came and Mom was still in the hospital. On Thanksgiving Day, my sister Patti and I arrived at the hospital, bright and early to spend Thanksgiving Day with Mom. We made turkey sandwiches and packed them in a little insulated lunch box, complete with a plastic container of dry ice. We also packed two small bottles of iced tea to have with our special Thanksgiving meal with Mom that day. An older woman came into Mom’s hospital room at about high noon. She carried with her a tray, with lunch on it. The kind woman smiled at Mom, put the tray down on Mom’s mobile, bedside table, said Happy Thanksgiving to Mom, then turned and returned to the hallway to the big lunch storage container on wheels. And, behold, there it was the hospital cafeteria’s version of a Thanksgiving dinner. Oh, I do not want to be unkind here. But, let’s just say, it was mediocre at best. The turkey was that pressed turkey that comes in a roll and someone simply sliced it up. Mom was given two slices of this turkey roll with a sparing amount of gravy. There was a little white, corrugated, paper cup ﬁlled about three-quarters of the way with cranberry sauce. Not the real cranberry sauce, but rather the cranberry sauce that has a slight resemblance to gelatin. Then, there was a bit of stuﬃng, some green beans and then some corn. Not the greatest Thanksgiving meal that my Mom ever had, but still it was better than nothing. I cut the turkey slices for Mom. She protested with every slice of the knife. “I’m not an invalid,” Mom kept telling me.

I assured Mom that she wasn’t an invalid, that I wanted to slice her turkey for her. Mom ate her turkey dinner, while my sister Patti and I ate our turkey sandwiches. It was a joyful moment in time. But it was deﬁnitely blanketed with a sprinkling of sadness. We talked about past Thanksgiving days. We remembered relatives, who were now having their Thanksgiving dinner in Heaven. We remembered places, pumpkin pies that didn’t cook so well, and times when there were so many relatives at the Thanksgiving table at the old Mabey Homestead, Mom would pray that the turkey would suﬃce. Miraculously, it always did. None of us knew it at the time, but that would be Mom’s last Thanksgiving meal. When they replaced Mom’s Aortic Valve, the surgeons did not properly align it and Mom died from a slowly leaking heart valve. Mom went Home to be with the Lord on the twenty-third of December, that following month, just last year. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t think of my mom. Life is so very short. None of us have any guarantees for tomorrow. I live in a 55 plus, gated community in Central Florida. Because I worked as a Security Guard, for eight years, I have been blessed to come to know quite a few people. Whenever I hear someone say that they have stopped talking to a loved one, it brings a certain sadness to my heart. Believe it or not, I have even heard a few people in my church talk like this. It deeply saddens me. I think there are three elements to having good relationships with loved ones. Those three things are: forgive, forgive

Livingston High School Senior and His Clarinet Make Award-Winning Music

By Steve Sears than Chang is no stranger to winning musical competitions. He – rather his performances - have stamped his name at the top of the list of the many he has entered. The Livingston High School Wind Symphony’s principal clarinetist, currently in his senior year at the school, was last year named Gold Prize winner of the 2019 National League of Performing Arts International Young Artist Competition, and this year he garnered highest rank in both the 2020 Crescendo International Competition and the 2020 Elite International Competition. Now, Chang can add another honor to his name, winning the New Jersey Wind Symphony of Ridgewood, New Jersey’s 15th Annual Youth Soloist Competition. Entrants came from Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Union counties in New Jersey, as well as New York’s Rockland County. The competition was in two stages. The first involved sending a recording of ones

playing music with their respective instrument, and the second was a live, outdoors performance at Old Troy Park in Parsippany, New Jersey, where Chang was selected as the winner. The Chang family as a whole are all musically inclined. Dad Seth plays violin and teaches the same. “My mom, actually, played the clarinet when she was in high school, but then she switched to becoming a piano major during her graduate studies,” says Chang, for whom piano and violin were first instruments of choice. However, when seeing older sister, Elynn, play the clarinet, he recalls, “I was willing to give it a try, and after trying it, I guess I really like the instrument.” He immediately fell in love with it and made it a pairing. It’s no surprise that the 17-year-old’s star has ascended. He studies clarinet with instructors from Manhattan’s The Juilliard School, and his resume is stellar. He performs with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Academy Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program, and the Region I Orchestra of the North

Jersey School Music Association, and he has taken the stage at Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra of Saint Luke’s DiMenna Center for Classical Music, Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Concert Hall, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Per Chang, the Livingston Wind Symphony is considered a high school course, and it’s one of three of the school’s bands, the Marching and Symphonic Bands the other two. Michael Jedwabnik, who both composes and writes music, is Director of Bands at Livingston High School. As for his future, Chang is not looking at conservatories or a music school per se, but at colleges with strong music programs that at the same time offer courses in areas outside of music. Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University, and the University of Southern California are high on his list of possible choices. Chang’s ultimate goal for now is to perform directly next to a conductor. “As a soloist, with an orchestra, as an accompaniment,” he explains. “I’ve never been able

Sarajane Giere’s New Book is About ‘War, Love, and ALS’ – and a Tribute to Her ‘Pilot’ Husband

t was true love - and an adventure -from the get-go and Sarajane Giere wanted to make sure that the story of her life with the man she called “The Pilot” would not ever be forgotten. Sarajane, a spunky military wife with a keen knack for storytelling, recounts her fighter pilot’s eventful Vietnam years through his letters and personal accounts. The harrowing shoot-down, the joy upon learning he had a son,

and the loneliness of separation. All the while, Sarajane worked with a local police detective to uncover evidence that brought one of her neighbors to justice. With a knack for detail, she recounts the uncertain years with Pan Am, and Bernie’s missions with the NY Air National Guard’s world-class 106th Rescue and Recovery Wing. The love that brought this intrepid couple together during their college years can be felt through the words on every page, and remained strong for 52 years, helping them grasp the courage they needed upon learning of Bernie’s ALS diagnosis. In telling their story the author honors her family that includes the military community she holds dear. “After Bernie was diagnosed with ALS, I wanted to record his memories to pass down to my grandchildren so they could know him as I did,” said Sarajane, who lives in West Caldwell. “He dictated, I transcribed. At first, I envisioned writing a Giere history, but after I reread the letters we had exchanged, especially those Bernie wrote from Vietnam, I could see it was becoming our story

alone that engaged me. I realized what a remarkable man I married and was so filled with gratitude I began to write about the Bernie I knew. Modern Acupuncture – for All Who Need Relief, and to Relax, Restore, and Revive

By Steve Sears lorham Park resident and Modern Acupuncture franchisee, Joan Arata, saw the writing on the wall: the possible end of her sales career. “Years ago, I started thinking about what was going to be my next life,” she recalls. “I knew I had a shelf life in corporate America, and I was quickly approaching that ceiling.” Through a friend, she heard about a franchise called The Joint, which is in the chiropractic field. Initially she opted not to get involved, but ran into the group a few years later, and they were talking about acupuncture. Arata’s thirsts were fueled. “Wow,” I said, “acupuncture. Now that’s an idea I can really get behind because I’ve been a big fan of acupuncture for many years.” It was a new concept started by some of the original founders of The Joint, so I knew they had experience with this business model.” Arata visited the Scottsdale, Arizona home offices and planned on buying two licenses. She told her son, who had a sleep issue, to try it. He did, and two weeks later called his mom and said, “Mom, I went and got acupuncture. I have to tell you – I’ve never slept like this in my life.” He was sold, so they decided to go into business together. They own five licenses but, currently, are only open in Florham Park and in SoHo in Manhattan. Arata’s job layoff occurred right thereafter. “We had just started construction in Manhattan and had just agreed to purchase here (Florham Park). So, it kind of became the perfect time for me to be able to focus on getting these two locations going.” Both locations opened in January 2020, then were forced to close in March due to COVID-19. Florham Park reopened on June 22, and SoHo after the 4th of July weekend. There are two acupuncturists now at each, and although both sites are open limited hours, Arata hopes a current uptick in services continues and both locations can reopen for regular hours. Acupuncture has been around over 2,500 years, but there is still a hesitation to try it. “When people ask me if it’s going to hurt,” explains Arata, “I will not tell them it’s not going to hurt. You know something’s happening, but once the needle is in, you don’t feel it. When the

needle comes out, you don’t feel it.” The needles used are thinner than a piece of thread, or the size and thickness of a piece of hair. Acupuncturists will explain to the patient how the science of acupuncture works. “The needles have a 20-minute cycle,” explains Arata. “Those needles have to be in you for 20 minutes for them to impact the neural pathways. Less than that, you didn’t finish the job; more than that, you can overexcite.” Arata also mentions that, in order for the neural pathways to truly change, you have to do acupuncture more often when starting out, “so that the neural pathway understands you’re changing it. Diabetes in New Jersey: A Statewide Concern

Written By Chris Bauer MD re you constantly thirsty, always tired, having frequent urination or blurry vision? You might have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes affects 9.2% of all people in New Jersey with over 640,000 people living with diabetes statewide. Most new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes are asymptomatic and only 10% of new cases are type I diabetes infections. Diabetes represents one of the most significant health concerns that faces so many members of our community. The majority of diabetes cases fall in either a type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes category. Diabetes type 1 is a condition that is more autoimmune based and is one in which your body does not make insulin. Insulin breaks down sugar in your blood and regulates your blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is when your body is making insulin but the tissue and organs in your body are less sensitive to insulin and as a result blood glucose levels are elevated. Often type 2 diabetes is associated with increased weight gain and obesity. Gestational diabetes is when pregnant women have an elevated blood sugar levels due to hormones that are made in the placenta. The most common way that any of the diabetic conditions are diagnosed is through routine doctor visits. This is true because again most cases of diabetes are asymptomatic. When people are symptomatic and having elevated glucose levels the diagnosis of diabetes can be easily made. Most often though the diagnosis of diabetes is made through standard screening tests. A fasting blood glucose test, a 2-hour plasma glucose test and an elevated Hemoglobin A1C level are all tests used to diagnose diabetes. Regularly scheduled annual exams at a family medicine or internal medicine doctor’s office can facilitate the testing for diabetes. After a diagnosis of diabetes has been made, the patient and the doctor then need

He brought those traits to our marriage and more. At each touchstone of our life together the strength of our marriage seemed to grow proportionately from the triumphs and tragedies we encountered. We supported and respected each other, much like his parents.“ It wasn’t always easy, of course, with a lot of time away from each other as expected with a career military man who flew 214

to create to plan of management. If the person has type 1 diabetes, then often the patient will be given insulin. Insulin can be injected around mealtimes or at planned intervals during the day to maintain a person’s normal blood glucose levels. People with Type 2 Diabetes often can make lifestyle changes such as weight loss, improved diet, and increased activity to improve their blood glucose levels. If these methods don’t work, then patients can either be put on a trial of injectable insulin or an oral medication to increase the body’s response to insulin. Pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes are initially tasked with diet control of blood glucose levels with improved diet and if this fails then medication is used. Patients with diabetes are at risk for many conditions and need to incorporate additional screenings into their daily routines to prevent further issues. Increased risk of heart disease, nerve injury, eye disease and kidney disease are the most common types disease sequelae that are associated with diabetes. Eye injury is one of the most significant areas of injury in diabetic patients. People with diabetes are recommended to have regular eye exams to evaluate the possible formation of cataracts, glaucoma and vision impairment. Regular feet exams are also recommended due to the increased incidence of nerve injury with diabetes. Kidney function should also be evaluated and monitored closely in the patients with diabetes. This can be accomplished by bloodwork as well as urinary analysis. Diabetes is a multifaceted disease with a tremendous impact on those who have it. Only through regular screenings and adequate patient education can the harmful effects of diabetes be minimized. Women’s Suffrage Celebrates Centennial

By Henry M. Holden he U.S Constitution originally left it up to the states to determine who is qualified to vote in elections. In the early years of our nation, states typically limited the right to vote to “freeholders” which were defined as persons who owned land (men) worth a certain amount of money. It was thought that people who did not own property would have no permanent stake in the community. The campaign for woman suffrage was long, difficult, dramatic, and at times heart breaking. Decades of effort to include African American and other minority women in the promise of voting rights remained the challenge. Voting rights for women and racial minorities were unheard of. But the devil is in the details. Most African Americans were slaves, owned by their white masters, and could not vote. Several states, however, allowed free blacks to vote. Most women could not vote, but in a number of venues, qualified women voted in local elections. In 1776, the New Jersey Constitution provided that “all inhabitants” of legal age who made the property and residency requirements were entitled to vote. It is

unclear if it was intended to include women. By 1790, state election law used the phrase he or she, to clarify the issue. By 1807, with allegations that men were dressing as women, and voting twice, the right of women to vote in New Jersey was revoked. For the next 30 years women’s suffrage was not taken seriously by lawmakers. Women organized, petitioned, and picketed to win the right to vote, but their struggle took decades to accomplish their purpose. Few early supporters lived to see final victory. The Seneca Falls Convention, in 1848, was the first women’s rights convention in the United States. The meeting launched the women’s suffrage movement. Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, at the convention and it led to many other women’s rights conventions. By the mid-19th century, woman suffrage supporters lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience to achieve what many Americans considered a sweeping change of the Constitution. In 1872, the first Presidential election

A Fearless Young Voice: She The Change

By Jillian Risberg t’s easy to say it’s not my community, not my world, not my problem. Then there are those, like Etasha Donthi, who see the need and respond. The CEO and host of She The Change podcast harnesses that restless energy and unleashes it against injustice, inspiring the next generation of female change-makers to be part of the discussion. “I believe everyone has the power to change the world,” Donthi says. “My goal is to foster conversations with my guests about today’s most pressing issues, such as inequity in the healthcare sector, mental health, and racism. I am also not afraid to address topics that receive less attention, including access for poor women and girls to basic necessities like menstrual products.” Hearing stories and discussions about how fearless young women have stepped out of their comfort zone and used their voice to speak up instills an inspired feeling within the listeners, according to the podcast host. “I am proud to say She The Change has been able to do that,” Donthi says. “It is the most rewarding feeling to receive messages from girls who are choosing to take risks and speak up, even though it may seem intimidating.” Her podcast guests are powerful, young female leaders who are advocating, empowering and initiating change on a local and global scale. She The Change offers an opportunity for activists and change-makers to converse about issues where societal intervention is necessary. “Each guest has a different cause of interest, and on the show we highlight that cause and explain its importance,” Donthi says. “Also, I hope to bring well-known female influencers. It would be a dream to have Alexandria Ocasio Cor-

tez, Karlie Kloss, Michelle Obama, Priyanka Chopra, Greta Thunberg and Nadia Murad join me on an episode because they inspired me to pursue my passion.” The podcast host’s goal at She The Change is to bridge the gender gap of women in leadership positions by inspiring her listeners to pursue their dreams, start their own initiatives and nonprofits. According to Donthi, she has already tackled climate change on an episode and her advocacy extends to global warming, pollution, gun violence and more. “Although we are making progress, the gender gap between women and men in leadership roles is far too large to be ignored,” the podcast host says. “Many girls have amazing ideas that could change this world, but unfortunately, many will never carry through with those ideas because they have been fed the lie that their dreams are not realistic.” Donthi started She The Change to change that narrative and encourage Gen Zers worldwide to stand up for the causes they believe in. The podcasting space was the perfect platform and the podcast host embodies ‘lead by example,’ working to reduce pollution and end worldwide poverty. “There is currently a scarcity of Gen Zers hosting podcasts, so naturally, Gen Zers make up a very small slice of podcast listeners,” says Donthi. “After I began growing a potential audience through Instagram, I began releasing episodes of She The Change, and those Instagram users became She The Change podcast listeners! She embarked on this journey young (and she’s only 15 now)… “In August of 2015, I started Hope and Joy for Children, a

non-profit that aims to provide those living in poverty with their basic necessities. Millions of people have been experiencing regular food crises, lack of freshwater, destroyed shelter and no medicine. SNAP (Special Needs Athletic Programs) of Morristown Celebrates Its 15th Year

By Steve Sears NAP (Special Needs Athletic Programs) of Morristown has been doing good for 15 years. “We may be in Morristown, but we have never turned anyone down. We have participants and mentors that come from all over Morris County,” says Kimberlee Strasser, SNAP program coordinator. “Which kind of goes along with our theme that we are very inclusive, and accepting, and we would never turn anybody down.” SNAP was created in 2006 by brothers Matt and Zach Certner when they were in high school. It enables special needs kids to enjoy the camaraderie of sports. Matt was a sophomore in high school, was athletic, knew someone who had special needs, and realized that even though he himself personally had athletic programs to engage in, the other individual had no place to turn to after school. Rounding up some of his basketball buddies, they got together with the special needs person, who then got his own friends involved. “SNAP was basically born as a result of him wanting to make this equal,” says Strasser. In the beginning, SNAP was a nightly occurrence. Many volunteers took part in yoga, arts & crafts, swimming, and more, and then Matt Photo courtesy of SNAP went off to college and his brother, Zach, took the reins, and he brought on an educational piece focusing on awareness of special needs. to take over the program, which is now a once-aweek event. Strasser, who is fond of the awareness portion of the program especially because she is a mom to a 24-year-old son with severe autism, but also taught special education and first grade, hopped on board. “Getting out into the schools,” she says, “and teaching the kids what autism is, teaching the kids what different disabilities are.” The latter is started in third grade, where there are four different stations at which students are taught about the different disabilities. “They (the kids) get to feel what it’s like to be different.” Strasser cites outstanding student mentors that take part in the program, one of which is junior Alex Grayzel of Morristown Beard High School. “I’ve been with the program for four years, and I’m now one of the head mentors of the program,” he says. “The reason why I love SNAP is because I get to play and bond with kids who have special needs who might not get that chance outside of SNAP. Seeing all the kids laughing and smiling while playing makes me really happy and that’s why I participate in the program. I dedicate my time to help set up and run the program and I can say that it’s well worth it. Not only has Mrs. Strasser taught me valuable lessons and skills during my time with the program, but SNAP as a whole has taught me so much. Giving back to the communicontinued on page 12

Women’s Suffrage... continued from page 7 thony argued. When Anthony tried to vote, to her surprise, she was permitted to do so. Her victory was, shallow. Two weeks after the election she was arrested for illegal voting. Despite her argument about the significance of the Fourteenth Amendment, she was convicted. In 1878, the suffrage amendment was first introduced in Congress. It would be introduced to each congress for the next 41 sessions. Women worked tirelessly, but strategies for achieving their goal varied. Some pursued a strategy of passing suffrage acts in each state. Early in the 20th century, women were only able to vote in nine western states which adopted woman suffrage legislation by 1912. Others challenged male-only voting laws in the courts. Some suffragists used confrontational tactics such as picketing, silent vigils, and hunger strikes. Usually supporters met angry resistance. Opponents heckled, jailed, and sometimes physically abused them. By 1916, almost all of the major suffrage organizations were united behind the goal of a constitutional amendment.

When New York adopted woman suffrage in 1917, and President Wilson changed his position to support an amendment in 1918, the political balance shifted. On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the amendment, and two weeks later, the Senate followed. Momentum rippled through the states. In July 1920, all eyes were on the Tennessee capital, Nashville, as anti-and pro suffragist each lobbied for the vision of a socially evolving United States. One more state was needed to ratify the proposed amendment and that duty rested solely on the shoulders of Tennessee. It passed by one vote, cast by a 25-year old legislator named Harry Burn, whose mother had urged him to do the right thing. When Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on August 18, 1920, the amendment passed its final challenge of obtaining the agreement of three-fourths of the states. Secretary of State, Bainbridge Colby, certified the ratification on August 26, 1920. The ratification was a transformative moment in America, changing the face of the American electorate forever.

Hope and Joy donated $16,000 to Save the Children, an international humanitarian organization. “My efforts were acknowledged by Disney Youth Service of America and I received the Disney Summer of Service Grant to make a larger impact in my community,” Donthi says. “It was incredibly rewarding to see the money I raised put a smile on hundreds of kids’ faces. Although ending poverty may seem like an undefeatable force too big for one person to make a difference, I am glad to be taking a step in the right direction and changing the world for the better.” When it comes to who is listening — the She The Change audience is predominantly composed of women up to age 59, with Gen Z and Millennials the largest listenership. “The audience has grown to thousands of listeners across many countries because of Instagram. Reaching more Gen Zers through the She The Change audience will only increase the number of people who are advocating and initiating change,” says Donthi. “That is all I could ask for.” The podcast market is flooded, but what sets She The Change apart is it’s one of the only podcasts hosted by a teenager. “And to my knowledge, the first podcast

produced with the aim of empowering Gen Z girls to advocate for change, take up leadership positions and empower others,” Donthi says. The podcast host is filled with humility and gratitude as she reflects on how She The Change has really resonated with people. “I could not have grown (it) to the scale it has without all the amazing supporters and listeners who share the episodes with their friends and family to extend the impact of She The Change,” says Donthi. “People around the world are taking a leap of faith; I couldn’t be more proud to see girls like me reaching out of their comfort zone and fighting for what they believe in.” After every episode, the podcast host hopes listeners come away feeling motivated and inspired by the discussion. “I love to see that inspired feeling translate into action, where the listener takes the knowledge she gained from the episode to initiate change within their community,” Donthi says. As of right now, I solely run She The Change, but I plan on recruiting passionate teen leaders on the team in order to expand the reach,” the podcast host says. That means Donthi does it all, from searching for guest speakers, recording the

episode virtually, editing with audio software, uploading and releasing onto all podcast platforms. At the end of the day, Donthi is speaking her truth, her way — and dynamically changing the world. “It is a surreal feeling to receive direct messages on a daily basis from young girls who started their own initiatives because of She The Change, because it proves that She The Change has the power to create a tangible impact around the world.”

SNAP... continued from page 9 ty is something I love doing and I think SNAP is a great way to do that.” Parents who take their special needs kids to SNAP clinics also enjoy a little down time in the “Peace for Parents” room, which was devised by Strasser’s daughter, Kylee. “That particular program was created by my daughter,” says Strasser, “and she created it probably because of me. She realizes that parents like me get very little down time, and she wanted these parents that were bringing their kids to have a more quality down time. Instead of sitting on the gym floor watching their kids play sports, she wanted to give them comfortable seating in their own space and soft music and snacks – let them really

relax during this very short period of time during the week.” For now, SNAP has gone virtual, which Strasser says often excludes the severely handicapped. “It’s not the same with the ZOOM sessions,” says Strasser. “Playing bingo and charades on a screen is really for the more able children; those are the ones signing up.” She is attempting to develop a way to do ZOOM session that could include physical activity for the kids that are looking for that. “I love this program,” says Strasser. “I love what it’s doing for our community. A History of Morristown Municipal Airport

On October 8, 1936, the Hindenburg appeared over Manhattan and flew west toward Morristown Airport. Six months later, it exploded over Lakehurst, N.J. dashing all hopes for a future Zeppelin base at Morristown Airport. (NJAHOF)

By Henry M. Holden n the early 1930s, Morristown Airport was situated on a 280-acre tract of land occupied by the Normandy Water Works, on the Columbia Meadowlands. Because the Great Depression little activity took place on the airfield. Then, in 1933, the federal government provided funds for airport improvements under the Works Project Administration. The improvements were in preparation for an expected Zeppelin base, fueled by the commercial German dirigible traffic between Europe and America. On October 7, 1936, the German Zeppelin Hindenburg flew over the Columbia Meadows. Speculation had it that Morristown would be the future eastern American terminal for the transoceanic flights of the Graf Zeppelin Company. The crash of the Hindenburg ended all discussions of a Zeppelin base. During World War II, Morristown Airport conducted an army primary flight training center. For more than two years, the airport had been conducting a Civilian Pilot Training Program, a program that anticipated the coming war and the need for pilots. Near the end of World War II, the Army returned the airport, now worth $1.5M, to Morristown. In 1947, Morristown put

$60,000 into the purchase and installation of hangars. Morristown Municipal Airport (MMU) began welcoming aviation companies to Morris County. At the time, these firms made Morris County a leader in research and development of aviation technology. With the settlement of thousands of employees, satellite industries and companies began settling in and around Morristown. Morristown, the County Seat for Morris County, attracted a population growth for decades. Zoning suits were thought to be the most effective way of limiting the airport’s expansion and the noise. In a 1956 suit against Morristown, by Hanover Township, the township argued that the airport “is a business pure and simple” and “entitled to no greater sanctity than a private corporation.” Morristown responded, “the airport served an essential governmental function serving the public need and … is immune from the zoning power of Hanover Township.” A unanimous ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in favor of the airport. In July 1969, Hanover Township, Morristown, Florham Park, and six members continued on page 17

Make a plan and set a budget. Categorize your expenses into wants versus needs. Groceries, rent and mortgage payments are

Compare your expenses against your total household income to figure out if you have money left over to save or if you can find money to save by reducing your spending on nonessentials. For example, keep an eye out for phantom charges – or reoccurring payments – you may no longer need and redirect that money into savings. “If you’re already saving, that’s great,” Schneider said. “Review your behaviors and see if there’s room for improvement. It’s also not too late if you haven’t begun saving – everyone has to start somewhere.” Also keep in mind your budget is meant to adapt with your circumstances, so make sure you’re updating your budget as your life changes. continued from page 13 of the Citizens for a Smaller Morristown Airport, filed a lawsuit jointly to block the expansion of the runway and facilities to accommodate medium and short-range jets. A judge ultimately ruled in favor of the airport, but the expansion and noise issues continued. The 1970s brought the jet age and further development. As the economy and airport grew, so too did noise and air traffic complaints. Neighboring towns continued their pressure to restrict airport growth. Each request for improvements was met with protests and threats of lawsuits. MMU would learn to ask for all it could get, and settle for what it needed. Other efforts, such as the demand for commercial passenger service would remain an unobtainable dream. The 1970s, also saw work underway to extend the major runway. Engineers dredged a swampy area, moving over 1.7-million tons of mud, and earth for the runway. They installed a new instrument landing system and other improvements related to safety. Airshows continued sporadically until Sunday, June 12, 1983 when a single engine experimental aircraft had both wings separate in flight, over the runway, and in front of an estimated 15,000 spectators. The crash was later ruled pilot error because the pilot exceeded the 200-mph speed limit for the homebuilt aircraft. The accident, and other logistical issues per-

manently ended the possibility of future airshows. With its continual growth and maintenance expenses, the people of Morristown wondered; would the airport continue to pay for itself, or would the taxpayers, foot the bill? By 1960, they earned a profit of $70,000. This trend did not continue. In 1982, Morristown leased the management of the airport to DM AIRPORTS, LTD. By 2002, there were several hundred aircraft based at MMU including jets, helicopters, and turboprops. Today it is the third busiest airport in New Jersey; surpassed only by Newark-Liberty International Airport, and Teterboro. Over the last three years, the number of airport movements has been increasing from 75,356 in 2017, to 82,900 in 2019. As a General Aviation Reliever Airport, MMU accepts private, corporate, air taxi, air ambulance, training, and military aircraft. The majority of New Jersey’s business fleet is located at Teterboro and MMU. In 2000 there were 325 aircraft based at MMU and in 2019 there were 241. In addition to being a major transportation asset, MMU is also a major economic asset to Morris County. It supplies an estimated $13 million in tax benefits to the community. Today MMU covers 638-acres. Physical constraints of the wetlands and permanently preserved open space eliminates the potential for future runway expansion.

With Americans spending more time at home than ever before, it is important to be ready before disaster strikes. Adding a global pandemic into the mix threatens to upend the process for the nearly 4 million 2020 graduates. For recent graduates, the disruption to the hiring and internship experience has brought unexpected challenges and adversity, and tested their ability to persevere.
