By Jason Cohen or the third consecutive year, a Livingston Launch Club team qualified as a finalist in MIT’s (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Launch Club global competition. The team was ranked among the top 20 teams in the world out of approximately 500 submissions. This year, the theme for the competition was environmental sustainability and Livingston’s Team Maia developed a system to capture and remove physical pollution from waterways. The five members of the team: Livingston High School students Omar Barakat, Pranit Dutta, Satish Natarajan, Rohat Chari and Prathik Lolla, presented their project to a panel at MIT. Business teacher, Merle Gehman, who advises the club, was quite impressed with his students. “It (the club) requires an incredible amount of persistence and a willingness to accept failure,” he said.
In Launch Club, student teams develop and pilot a new business idea using MIT’s entrepreneurship approach. Students spend seven months following MIT’s entrepreneurship program to develop their businesses. They conduct field research and create and test a prototype of their product with consumers. Launch Club is led by directors, which are students Catherine Yu, Amy Liu, Tim Shaw, Eashan Bagia, Aaron Samuel and Mekha Thottananiyil. The directors are veterans of past teams, and teach MIT’s entrepreneurship process to the new teams. The competition ended in Boston for Global Demo Day on April 28, where teams from around the world presented to judges and business people. Team Maia is eligible for a $5,000 grant to pursue their idea. The team was also referred to a non-profit organization that continued on page 6

Gregory School Of West Orange Hosts Its 80th Annual Strawberry Festival

By Steve Sears ight decades ago, the Gregory Avenue School Parent Teacher Association of West Orange hosted for the first time a Strawberry Festival. This year’s 80th annual event was held on Saturday, June 9 from noon to 4 p.m. Joseph Fagan, a township historian, offers the following: “The Annual Strawberry Festival was begun by the school’s PTA in 1938. The specific history of the PTA is really rooted in the history of the school itself.” Gregory School opened in 1914. During the school’s construction, the genesis of the PTA was formed. Fagan further explains. “Mrs. Allen invited mothers to meet new teachers Miss Emma White and Miss Katherine Brady at her Lawrence Avenue home for tea. At this tea party an idea for a Mother’s Club was formed for the purpose of meeting with teachers biweekly. This eventually became the Gregory School & Home Association. In 1914 shortly after the school opened it became
the school’s first Parent Teacher Association. This gave the new Gregory School two important distinctions. It was the first school association of all West Orange’s public schools to organize before the school was built. It also became the first school in West Orange to join the state and national PTA chapters. The first president of the PTA was Mrs. Woodward who served for seven years and the first secretary was Mrs. Beckwith. Both women were among those women who worked hard to get the new school built.” The PTA sponsored event has grown over the years, becoming part of West Orange tradition. Attended each May or June on the Gregory School grounds, students, their families, and teachers attend, as do a great portion of the community. “The school,” adds Fagan, “now stands as a monument to those mother’s vision for a neighborhood school that became reality over a century ago.” Skye Monahan, PTA President-Elect for the 2018/2019 school year, provides
details of this year’s event. “The 80th Annual Strawberry Festival is headed up by our current Social Chair Dana Kelly. She and her committee spent the last few months putting together the details of this year’s event.” Included were a triple wide water slide, a euro bungee and inflatables. Additionally, the festival planned to feature crafts, music, and special performances, including a former circus performer, Krazy Kevin. “I would also love to stress the fact that this event would not be possible without our incredible parent and high school volunteers,” says Monahan. “Our amazing parents take time out of their busy schedules to create an event that becomes a special memory for our students and community. Without their help, this time- honored tradition wouldn’t last. It’s a true testament to the history of the festival and the school community itself.”

Decks And Pools... continued from page 4 homeowner or contractor. If the hurdles of maintenance and replacement have been cleared, its time to get down to the nitty gritty of deck cleaning. Nick O’Donnell, the manager at Homecraft Rental Center in Ledgewood, said customers can usually count on using a pressure washer to initiate deck cleanup. “People have to pressure wash first, then let it dry for a couple days,” he said. “Then they have to sand the surface and stain it right away,” to create a weather proof and esthetically pleasing surface. “You have a 90 per cent chance of sanding. You have to do that before you stain – it eliminates peeling.” Although O’Donnell and his staff make sure to explain how the equipment works, he said most people don’t pay attention. It doesn’t matter. They are always welcome to call back with questions. Deck cleaning comes with eco-friendly options. The website www.house-painintg-info.com lists mixtures that include white vinegar and mild dish soap (good for degreasing and mildew), baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and even OxiClean. All can be diluted with water and used on the deck surface. The cleaning, scrubbing and maintenance certainly doesn’t stop with the deck. Swimming pools, large and small, demand preparation and routine maintenance to keep them sparkling. Jim Pagonis, the owner of American Pools in Kenvil said that this year’s longer winter meant that his clients’ in ground pools were “greener” when he got them open. “Longer winters breed algae in pools,” he said. The more quickly the pool is chemically treated, and the filtration system established, the better it will be for swimming throughout the season. The do-it-yourself shopping list for pool maintenance should include chemicals such as pool shock, chlorine and a chlorine stabilizer. A telescopic pole with a skimmer head, vacuum head, vacuum hose and pool brush should become best
friends with the pool surface over the next few months. An entire test kit or new test strips are essential. “Test the water with a good test kit every two to three days,” Pagonis emphasized. He and other pool service professionals are happy to take on the daunting task of creating a safe and beautiful swimming environment. A recent release from the Denville office of the Metro Chapter of the Northeast Spa and Pool Association stated “pool pumps, motors, filters, chlorinators, feeders, salt chlorine generators, heaters, heat pumps, blowers, controls, and more are critical for pool maintenance and are a lot to keep up with for someone not professionally trained. For safety, a pool professional will review all aspects of your pool to make sure it is operating safely and doesn’t pose any safety risks. This includes a review of safety barriers (fencing etc.), drain covers and in pool lighting.” Meanwhile, crews from Champs Pool Service in Budd Lake are also scrambling to ready people’s swimming holes. Everett Demouth, the store manager, said he noticed that above ground pool covers have continued on page 7

Barakat, who immigrated to America from Egypt two years ago, is a senior in the high school and will be attending Penn State University in the fall. After getting used to his new school and community, he joined the club because of his passion for entrepreneurship. “I’ve always had an interest in entrepreneurship because my father owns his own business,” he said. His father, Sherif, owned a construction company in Egypt and when they moved here, started one as well. Barakat explained his goal was to get experience with Launch Club, but never did he imagine his team and idea would gain such recognition. He noted that this was an opportunity to learn firsthand what being an entrepreneur was like. Growing up near the Nile River in Egypt, which is heavily polluted, he felt compelled to address this issue. “I thought that it was very important to tackle because it’s a very real problem,” he
said. According to Barakat, it took a while for the team to get on the same page in regards to designing the product. The kids created a water strider, which works like a fishnet attached to a boat and it would essentially scoop up trash as the boat travels. Not only did it go through several changes prior to being complete, but it also did not receive good feedback at Regional Demo Day in New York. “We felt very defeated,” he said. “We felt our idea was a rocky one.” But, suddenly in late April Barakat got an email at midnight notifying him the team was selected as a finalist. After spending the weekend at MIT and meeting with some of the brightest minds in the world, the teens plan to pursue their project as a business. They will either apply for a second year program at MIT Launch X or work with a business incubator. “The biggest thing I’ve gained from it is the sense of self confidence,” he commented. “To find success on the very first try that’s something I didn’t anticipate.” One of his teammates, Dutta, a junior,
grew up in India where water pollution is a big issue. Like Barakat, he also moved to America a couple of years ago and this was his first year doing the club. He didn’t know much about the club at first, but is glad he joined. During the past year he learned how a business operates, how to look for clients and how to tailor products to them. “We worked pretty hard and along the way learned a lot of things,” he remarked. Dutta explained that his family here and abroad was happy that not only was he chosen to compete at MIT, but that his business idea was something that could benefit his country back home. The team is currently in contact with a few non-governmental organizations in India about the product. Gehman, who spent 30 years at JP Morgan, but the past five at LHS, feels the club has had a positive impact on the students. In fact, one of the first Launch participants is starting a $200 million venture fund for college entrepreneurs. “It’s really nice to see some students take in what they learn,” he said.

Essex County Seeks Parks, Nature Photographs For Contest
ssex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites the public to participate in the 2018 Essex County Parks Photography Contest. Photographers of all ages and abilities may submit photos highlighting the Essex County Parks System. The deadline for entering the free contest is Sept. 12. “Our first-class athletic facilities, beautiful vistas and peaceful open spaces provide a variety of opportunities for residents to get involved in recreation activities, learn about nature and escape our busy streets,’’ DiVencenzo said. “We are inviting the public to grab their cameras and capture the beauty, diversity and uniqueness of our historic Parks System.” The Essex County Parks Photography Contest is sponsored by the Essex County Environmental Center. Mt. Olive Woman Directs Dress For Success With More Partnerships And Fundraisers

By Cheryl Conway ith more partnerships and fundraisers, the new director of Dress For Success Northern N.J. hopes to grow the non-profit to support a greater number of women seeking jobs and confidence to succeed in the workforce. Kimberly Iozzi, 45, of Budd Lake began on April 30 in her new role as executive director of Dress For Success Northern N.J. covering 10 counties throughout the state. As the former executive director of the Newton Housing Authority for 15 years, Iozzi brings years of experience in government and nonprofit management, dedicating her entire career to empowering low and moderate-income families achieve economic self-sufficiency, personal development and growth. When she saw the position open for Dress For Success advertised through the Center For Nonprofits, Iozzi says she jumped at the opportunity. “I was looking for a change,” she says, as she describes her passion for helping women succeed in the workforce.
Dress for Success Northern NJ- 10 Counties, serves Morris, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Somerset, Union and Passaic counties. While it is an affiliate of the Dress for Success Worldwide organization, it is an independent 501©3, responsible for its own fundraising and operations. It relies solely on corporate, foundation and individual contributions to serve its clients at no cost to them. The mission of the organization is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. “The goal is to provide all developmental tools, get the interview and do well and to build their confidence,” says Iozzi. All of the programs are offered at no cost to participants. The organization served more than 1,500 women last year, ages 18 to 64, and is well on its way to double that amount this year. “I really want to do more locally to
generate support for the mission through both educational events, fundraising, and more,” she says. As the new executive director, Iozzi oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization. continued on page 11

Dress For Success... continued from page 10 “We run nine programs,” she says, and have 600 volunteers with three paid staff members that manage the programs. One of the programs is a Career Center in which women get assistance with their resumes, interview and online job searches. Another program, Steps For Success offers a 10-week job ready boot camp for unemployed women to break down barriers and provide an extra push to assist a woman in getting a job. “The women come from all different backgrounds,” says Iozzi, not just those who are disadvantaged. Some are stayat-home moms trying to get back into the workforce, others are first time clients trying to enter the workforce. Other programs include mentoring, technology skills, time management and budgeting and Foundation For Success in which women are provided tips on how to keep their employment. A Professional Women’s Group is also offered to provide monthly networking meetings featuring speakers to discuss professional issues, personal growth, budgeting and balancing. The Mobile is another program in which a van visits agencies by appointment and operates as a boutique with volunteer stylists on board to play dress up with suits and help women build confidence. “Its largest suiting was for 70 people,” notes Iozzi. Women are given a referral sheet, are sized and pick their outfits from colors of suits and shoe styles from heels to flats, and also receive a one hour training session. “It’s amazing to see the transformation that happens,” says Iozzi. The Mobile “brings
suits to them, does training,” covering interview tips, how to engage, how to shake hands, what questions to ask. With the main boutique at the Madison Community House in Madison, Iozzi hopes to expand to include satellite offices in each of the 10 counties “so people can donate, get clothing and training,” closer to where they live. Bridge to Success is another program in which clients can engage in a bimonthly job search after they go through steps of training, explains Iozzi. “This bridge helps them with their one on one to give them the tools,” she says, to succeed. Since women are served for free, Iozzi stresses it is “so important to have grants and donations.” While the majority of the women are referred to Dress For Success by partnering agencies, the organization will connect with all women who need assistance. Some partners include the Women’s Center at the County College of Morris in Randolph, and Jersey Battered Women’s Service. “We need more referral agencies to refer clients to us,” says Iozzi, “partnerships from every level. We are looking for community ambassadors” to hold suit drives for suits, shoes, handbags and jewelry, “whatever makes up a professional. Or host a fundraiser or empower hours to donate a percentage to Dress For Success. “We need to catch up with our donations so we can grow moving forward,” says Iozzi. In its 20th year, Iozzi says “I know we are doing something right.” Clients seek jobs in all areas from doctors, accountants, customer service, corporations and even Emmy writers. “It’s crazy the diversity we have,” says Iozzi, who was selected recently to serve as vice president for the Morris County Human Relations Commis-

sion. “While most people immediately think of us as ‘the suits,” it is so much more than that. Our organization is all about building confidence, not just in appearance, but through the development of key competencies that are essential to excel in the workplace. “You can look good but you may not have the skill set,” she says. “We offer many programs and are always looking to do more.” Dress For Success recently held its largest fundraiser with its gala in May at the Park Savoy in Florham Park. She plans to host the organization’s first fashion show in the spring of 2019. On October 19 she is looking for a venue to recognize the first suiting ever held for a woman through Dress For Success, and will also plan a golf outing and other smaller events. months so far, Iozzi says “I love it. Every day is just a fulfillment; you are making a difference in someone’s life. We are changing lives. She’s now able to support her family. We are giving women confidence, if they lost it along the way. Everybody has a story. We are building them up, giving them the tools they need to be successful. “You can’t buy that satisfaction or making a true difference in someone’s life. I love my job. I’m at a point to make a real dif-
ference and this is definitely it.” Dress For Success Northern N.J. is one of three branches in N.J. and the Madison office is one of 154 offices in 30 countries worldwide. “We are here and we need help,” she concludes. “If people have ideas for fundraisers or partnerships, I’m open. xit 5A Robotics, an all-girls robotics team, completed their 2017-2018 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition season at the North American Open Championships (NAOC). The event was held at LegoLand Carlsbad, Calif., May 1820, with 79 of the top teams from each of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and leading teams from Sweden, Canada, Mexico, Uruguay, South Korea, and Japan. Teams competing in FLL are judged and scored in three categories: robotics, core-values & teamwork, and a STEM research project. The 2017-2018 season saw 325 FLL teams compete in NJ, 20,000 in the U.S., and about 30,000 teams worldwide. A member of Livingston Robotics Club (LRC) since 2014, the 2017/2018 team was made up of Livingston High School and Heritage Middle School students. The team was built around the veteran core of fourth year team members Jannet Chari, Julia Chen, Annica Lam, Chloe Sivitz, Summer Yung. After a one-year hiatus, Maggie Siao returned fully invigorated to captain the STEM research project. Rachelle Hu, in her second year brought advanced programming concepts to help with robot navigation and new comer Elaina Mann developed rapidly with novel mechanisms to help the robot complete missions. Lam cap-
tained the robot team development team and Yung captained the core-values & teamwork efforts. At the NAOC, Exit 5A Robotics (E5A) won a Judges Award, being cited for their enthusiasm, teamwork and community efforts. The team’s STEM research project was noted by judges as being an original solution with potential value. Their proposal titled “Amphitrite” utilizes a class of plants known as Halophytes to drastically reduce road-salt contamination of reservoirs and aquifers. This will soon be entering a pilot project phase with a local water utility. Judges also cited the team’s robotics work for strategy & innovation with original features and systematic design. The team’s robot finished in top 20 percent with 16th place in the robot game challenge and a few millimeters away from completing a mission that would have placed them in ninth. With the season complete, the team reflected back upon the year. Chari commented that the NAOC was filled with so many people of different backgrounds but everyone still shared common bond for STEM, robotics, and gracious professionalism. For her, it was a wonderful experience to meet teams from around the world. continued on page 14

T
he 10th Annual Back 2 School Store hosted by the NCJW Essex County returns on July 29 and volunteers are needed to help run the program. This one-day annual event enables economically disadvantaged children of Essex County to “shop” for free for brand-new clothing, sneakers and school supplies in a one-day-only “store.” Sign up now for this rewarding opportunity and make a difference in the life of a child at a new expanded location in Livingston. With the assistance of NCJW/Essex volunteer personal shoppers, each child is escorted throughout the department-store-like space to
select pants, shirts, sneakers, hats, gloves, undergarments, winter jacket, and a backpack in assorted colors and styles. Each child also receives school supplies and books as well as personal care items. All merchandise is brand new and purchased by NCJW/Essex. While the children shop, parents and caregivers can browse the Gaelen Family Resource Center to pick up health and social service information from many different exhibitors. Robotics Award... continued from page 13 Sivitz observed that “Throughout this year, we’ve met so many inspiring people, been to numerous exciting events, meeting over 5,000 people along the way. It was great to be among so many other talented teams at the NAOC.” For Siao, she saw a stark but highly positive change with nearly half of competitor being young women compared to the less than a quarter in the 2014 NAOC she was part of with Exit 5 Robotics. The season was also a positive life changing aspect. For Yung, the NAOC was a special experience being able to meet different teams from different states and countries. It was a reminder that even with lot of hard work spent learning new things, everybody there was still learning. Chen also found that aspiring to learn was a common bond across young people from around the world. She noticed that everyone was more concerned about learning new things as opposed to focusing
on winning, even though they were at a competitive event. On the robot side, Lam expressed relief but also pride in all the hard work that transpired from August to May. “This season of FLL was one of the most memorable experiences in my life. We built three robots each with increasing complexity and improved our programming to make a better navigating robot” Hu found that the difficult 2016-2017 season laid the foundation for this successful 2017-2018 season that incorporated much many more advancements in both programming and mechanics. Mann came away from the NAOC with a great appreciation for the diversity of robot designs and project ideas. Tickets On Sale For Three Day Balloon Festival
emorial Day Weekend launched the beginning of summer … and it launched balloons, too. Tickets for the 36th annual QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning in Association with PNC Bank, the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America, are on sale at all 156 QuickChek fresh convenience market store locations throughout New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Long Island. The three-day festival has been named the “#1 Thing to Do in New Jersey” by “New Jersey Monthly” magazine and the premier family entertainment attraction in the state by the USATODAY Network. ith warmer weather, people often spend more time on summer trips with family. These trips can be more enjoyable when your four-legged friends tag along, but it can be less of a vacation if your pets are uncomfortable on the road. “Taking pets out of their homes can induce stress on both the pets and the owners, so it’s important to keep them comfortable and safe while traveling,” said Jessa Paschke, behavior and training specialist at Mars Petcare. “Surrounding them with some of their favorite things from home can help reduce any anxiety and keep your pet happy anywhere you go.” Keep these tips in mind when taking your pet on a summer road trip: • See your vet before you go. Be sure to visit your veterinarian prior to taking off.

Especially when traveling with an older pet, your vet can do a quick check-up to help identify any potential issues that could arise while traveling. If you’re crossing state lines, you also may need to get a health certificate for your pet. • Find pet-friendly stops along the route. Long drives often require frequent stops, but don’t forget that your pets need pit stops, too. Find a rest stop that has a grassy area for them to expel some energy and take care of their business. Be sure to keep your pets on leashes to keep them from roaming freely in unfamiliar places. Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants. After careful examination, Dr. Chiu decided she would need very extensive bone repair in her sinuses, done in stages to allow her to have implants placed. This could take two years, because she is already wearing a removable denture. It interferes with the normal bone repair process in the other areas of her upper jaw. That’s why planning ahead is crucial when it comes to a treatment of an implant-supported fixed bridge, especially before the teeth are extracted. Oftentimes, a lot of the “prep” work is done while a couple of teeth remain in the mouth to hold up a fixed temporary appliance. This allows for a faster healing time and more optimal placement of implants to support a fixed bridge.
