Livingston School for People with Autism Teach with Out-of-the-Box Mentality

By Jerry Del Priore he month of April marks Autism Awareness Month in the United States, with the goal to educate the public about autism spectrum disorder, a developmental condition of various degrees that’s characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior. As diagnoses of children on the autism spectrum rises, with New Jersey having the highest rate of in the country, at one in 34, according to a Center of Disease Control (CDC) report in 2018, the need for quality schools and institutions which serve this population increases. One such school is Academy360 -- formerly known as the Children’s Institute -- a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit NJ State Board of Education-approved private school for students on the autism spectrum (which ranges from high to low functioning) and with behavioral and related disabilities for ages three to 21. On the Academy360’s Livingston campus, there’s the Upper School, in which students engage in a typical full day of

high school academic instruction, aligned with national and state standards. In addition, there are vital services including speech, clinical, occupational and physical therapy, and behavioral intervention, as well as psychological and psychiatric consultations. However, while most traditional autistic schools are limited curriculum-wise, Spectrum360 goes beyond the norm, educating the whole child and focusing on each individual’s abilities rather than their disabilities.

Not limited to just students on the autism spectrum, FilmAcademy360 permits mainstream pupils to enroll in the program, too. “It’s open to generally anybody in the Livingston community,” said Jennifer Miller, a former social worker and the Public Information/Family Liaison at Academy360. “We thought to integrate it with other students, to create inclusion,” adding a real-world element to its program. The students went as far as creating a film with program director David Di Ianni called “Deema and Amir,” a short documentary filmed in Israel about the story of Jewish
and Arab children attending school together and breaking down long-standing barriers between the two groups. Miller said this particular movie project was close to the hearts of the student filmmakers who attend FilmAcademy360, which operates after-hours, weekends and in the summer. “The reason they did this movie was because it’s about acceptance,” she explained. “And that is all people on the spectrum want.”. Miller said they also created a web-based series called “The Studio,” a spoof on the TV show “The Office.” Additionally, Spectrum360 offers CulinaryAcademy360, led by program director Chef Michael Matthews. The pro-
gram is more than “simply making cookies,” Miller said. “They make pasta and pizza dough, all from scratch.” They also learn kitchen safety techniques and mathematics, as in learning how to adapt different recipes for multiple portions, she noted. Plus, Spectrum360 students engage in its Community Based Work Experience Program (CBWE), in which they gain pragmatic work-oriented experience that permits them to apply life skills and academic subject matter outside the classroom setting and features hands-on learning and application. The final goal is to have students placed in paid positions within their home community with minimal or no support,

and to hold more than the basic job when feasible. “The problem is with kids on the spectrum is there aren’t any high-volume jobs (out there),” Miller lamented. “Just because a kid has autism, doesn’t mean they should be bagging groceries if they’re capable of more.” Overall, between schools in Livingston, Verona and Whippany, Miller said Spectrum360 serves approximately 350 families, and between 95-100 school districts. LHS Alum Darren Prince ‘88 Shares His Story of Addiction and Recovery to Hometown Crowd

By Megan Roche arren Prince, Livingston High School Class of 1988, was finally able to return home to his alma mater on April 4 to share his powerful story of addiction, reaching the top of his career, while losing everything he loved because of drugs. The auditorium at Livingston High School was packed with old classmates, Livingston Police Officers, Guidance Counselors, students, teachers, and members of the community. Having Prince speak was a longtime effort from many groups throughout town. His event on April 4 was organized by Livingston Vision 20/20 and co-sponsored by the Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee and Healthy

Community Healthy Youth. As Prince spoke to a wide audience, you could hear a pin drop. From his early youth collecting baseball cards to becoming involved in the sports and entertainment industry, Prince shared his harrowing story of addiction and how even at the pinnacle of his career, his physical and mental health were in major crisis. “I know we’re going to change and save at least one life in the room this evening of and that’s what it’s about.” Prince shared in a Facebook post. In his book, Aiming High, Prince shares in detail his memories from when he was sick. However, he also tells the tale of how once he hit rock bottom, he rose back to the Same-day delivery.

As she awaited Prince to sign her book, she could be heard talking to many people about the importance of his message. “The thing you’ll see most is ‘not my child’. Parents think they’ll be able to spot it when their kids are using drugs. I really appreciated his message about how he really hit rock bottom and found his spiritual guide. The spiritual anointing was really important.” Tait said. Prince was emotional as he took the stage at Livingston High School. As the event was winding down, Prince could be seen hugging former classmates and teachers. The event

Livingston High School Boys Fencing Team Makes History

By Michele DiPasquale t may be surprising to read, but the sport of fencing is alive and well. In fact, fencing is increasingly popular as a new sport for beginners, while the more experienced - and even masters of the art - continue enjoying and excelling in this 12th-century sport. While fencing and its training date back as early on the calendar as the 1100s, modern fencing reached its zenith around the 1700s and was most popular in Italy, France, and Spain. The term “fencing” is translated to mean “the art of using a sword scientifically,” and for hundreds of years the sport has been embraced arguably far more by Europeans than Americans. But, like soccer, the U.S. has become
quite adept at fencing; and in fact, it has been taught in some American schools and private academies since the 18th century, so it’s not so surprising that Americans are becoming almost as competitive in the sport as their European peers. Fencing is actually a group of three related combat sports, or disciplines, known as the foil, the epee, and the sabre. The object of the sport is to score a point - or touch - by hitting your opponent’s target with your weapon before they score a point on you, but the rules, strategies, and target areas differ with each weapon to make the games distinct. Most competitive fencers choose to specialize in one weapon only. The Livingston High School

To make things even more interesting, the Livingston Lancers had to defeat the twotime champion St. Peter’s Prep in the state tournament finals. Their crushing hard work paid off with superior work from junior Fillip Kizhner and senior Max Shen who reversed a 4-1 lead by their rivals, St. Peter’s, to rise as the champions for the first state fencing title in Livingston High School history. Moreover, the Livingston Lancers acquired the overall team title at the esteemed and highly regarded, exclusive Cetrulo Tournament in January of this year, finishing first in the sabre category, seventh in the epee and 10th in the foil. Livingston Lancers coach
George Janto has proudly led his team for many years, and it is in his last and final season that Coach Janto can rejoice in his triumph with the Lancers at having come so very far during his tenure. “The senior leadership and resilience on this team has been strong all year and rubs off on all the team members,” Coach Janto said. For nearly 20 years, Maplewood’s Columbia High School had led in their fencing program, so Coach Janto and the Lancers were sweetly gratified at defeating Columbia’s team, a real force to be reckoned with. Ironically, Coach Janto secured his very first state title as the Columbia team’s coach in 2009 before shifting to Livingston High School in 2010.
“It was a real honor to beat such a formidable team,” Coach Janto said. The state title for Livingston finishes a remarkable season for the Livingston Lancers, also won Cetrulo, the biggest high school fencing tournament in the country, and succeeded that by capturing the state squad title in sabre. Coach Janto, 74, has been a leader in the growth and development of students’ fencing all along the state of New Jersey. He is an organizer of the United States Fencing Association (USFA) tournaments and a member of the USFA’s

And young people in particular feel the words acutely. Bullying can be so much more than just a problem of kids being kids. Nowadays with the abundance of social media, this harassment can be 24/7, with fatal consequences. Such is the case with Rockaway’s Mallory Grossman: She took her own life in 2017 as a result of bullying, opting for a tragic and permanent solution to a temporary problem. She was 12 years old. On March 28th, people were invited to join in the program Our Words Matter, a talk given by Dianne Grossman, Mallory’s mother, sponsored by the Livingston Senior Youth and Leisure Services in conjunction with their Livingston Youth and Community Services Program (LYCS), as well as Livingston Community Police. Grossman spoke to Livingston teens regarding Mallory’s Army-- the organization she founded after Mallory’s death, as well as how her family was dealing with the unimaginable. She spoke about bullying, cyberbullying, young people, the ‘not my kid,’ syndrome, and so much more. All proceeds raised benefitted Mallory’s Army Foundation and their fight against bullying. After her daughter’s death, Grossman founded this worthwhile organization as a way to promote kindness and to unite against the escalating problem of bullying. Following the program, there was a question and answer session with Grossman, L i v i n g s t o n Therapist, Andrea Sherman, and
Livingston Community Police--a three ply approach to the problem of bullying. Livingston Youth and Community Services is a community-based after school program that teaches leadership, healthy life choices, and life skills to students in grades 1 through 12 in the Livingston School District. According to Jennifer Quirk, Adaptive Recreation Coordinator/LYCS Program Supervisor, the idea to bring Dianne Grossman and Mallory’s Army to Livingston, was spearheaded by Andrea Hoffman, a mom of a seventh grader. “I thought it was a great idea, so in tune to what we do here,” she said. Grossman’s Mother Speaks... continued from page 10 anti-bullying messages and programs in almost every grade level at their organization to try and counteract the more negative messages out there. For the younger kids it may be lessons about being kind, sharing, and what it means to be a friend. For the older students the lessons expand to integrity, character, accountability, and when to speak up. In talking to Hoffman, it is easy to see just how passionate she is regarding this issue. “I saw her speak and was absolutely affected by her story.” Hoffman relates. “It is unbelievable how she is enduring such a tragedy, of losing a child to suicide, she will always grieve, and yet she still has the fortitude to go around to locations with Mallory’s Army to speak, to bring insight and help
others.” Hoffman says that she wanted to have the event held at the community center and not a venue that was affiliated with a church or school. “The community center was more accessible and multipurpose.” According to both Quirk and Hoffman, this was a comprehensive program with many elements: from Mallory’s story, to some of the root cause regarding bullying (such as entitlement, the “pack mentality” and system of school cliques, lack of accountability, etc) there will be strategies and conflict resolutions, for coping, to knowing the law and your rights, and so much more. “We wanted to target kids around age 12 for this program because the time in middle school --the time between childhood and high school-- is such a turbulent, transitional
time. It’s so stressful for our kids,” Hoffman remarks. “With them plugged into social media all of the time, it’s dangerous.” Recognizing that the problem of bullying and its consequences is so multilayered, from the parents, to attitudes about ‘keeping up with the Joneses’, to the kids themselves, to social media, there’s so many facets to this problem. It’s not a problem that any one person can tackle alone. “It takes a village,” Hoffman asserts. With Mallory’s Army Foundation, they invite everyone to blue out bullying. Blue bracelets are a tangible, visual representation that kids won’t stand for bullying. “Hopefully when other kids see this, the rest will follow suit,” Hoffman tells. At Mallory’s Army they seek to unite everyone in the fight against bullying

They have to keep talking to them and talk to them often. Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Michael and Elias Kambourakis Continue the Tradition of Being in the Fur Business for 10 Generations
t started when Eric Rouskas (Michael’s Grandfather) and Harry Terzako (Michael’s Uncle) decided to leave Kastoria Greece in 1913. Kastoria was and still is the genesis of fur in Europe. Eric and Harry settled in Newark. They started in working for Best & Company and on the side they made fur coats, collars and trimmings. At that time, America was the land of skins and trapping of wild boar tail, mink, muskrat, raccoons and beavers. Foxes came later on in the 1930’s. When farming started in the 30’s and 40’s, the family got better quality mink and fox pelts. The fur industry grew to a point that it is now all over the world. The family opened a store
on High Street in Newark, and then moved to 19 Prospect Street in East Orange. They moved to 472 Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell in the early 1970’s. ccording to March of Dimes, parents of newborns should resist the temptation to have their children sleep in their beds with them. Known as “co-sleeping,” this practice can put a baby at risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS. In fact, March of Dimes notes that bed-sharing is the most common cause of death in babies younger than three months. Parents concerned about their children sleeping in another room overnight can still have children with them in their bedrooms, though the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep in a bassinet or crib rather than share a bed with their parents. To further reduce a child’s risk of SIDS, parents should place their babies to sleep on their backs on flat, firm surfaces, such as a crib mattress covered with a tightly fitted sheet. Only use the mattress designed exclusively for the crib in which the child will be sleeping, as this should ensure that there are no spaces between the mattress and the crib frame. If such spaces exist, babies can easily roll into them but won’t be strong enough to pull themselves out.

Livingston HS Quiz Bowl Team is Primed and Ready for the National Academic Tournament

By Michele DiPasquale ost of us know about the TV game show Jeopardy, in which contestants compete in multiple categories of general knowledge from given clues on infinite topics and use a buzzer system to interrupt the question’s reading in order to get the answer right first. The show began in 1964 and is still running and as popular as ever. That being said, it’s not so surprising that this formula has been adapted to many other contests, including “Quiz Bowl.” Quiz Bowl is a competition in which two teams are challenged to answer questions from myriad areas of knowledge, like current events, fine arts, history, literature, pop culture, science, sports, and more. Just like Jeopardy, the use of a buzzer system is implemented to allow players to interrupt the question’s reading when the answer is known. Quiz Bowl team advisor Guy Rabner, and a teacher of Italian and Spanish at Livingston High has been a quiz bowl player since his youth and has coached since 2000. “With Quiz Bowl it’s more about academic questions: pop culture, sports, music, history, math, science, philosophy, religion,” explained Rabner. “During a game of 20 questions, if you answer correctly, you get to a round of 3 bonus questions. And unlike Jeopardy, you don’t answer in question-form.” he said. “The questions start out somewhat vague, and so you
may be able to answer the question early. Like, ‘what’s the largest city in the US?’ but if you answer early and get it wrong, you get locked out of that question,” Rabner explained. Quiz Bowl offers varying levels of difficulty. There are 12 games per competition, with the Nationals being much tougher, the more you progress. “The goal is always to win, but also to improve and have fun. Most of the kids like it because they love knowledge but also because they get to know each other, meet people and have fun,” said Rabner. “The goal is to qualify for Nationals, which we did. We are going to Atlanta Memorial Day weekend to compete,” he said. “The prize is really the enjoyment, the camaraderie; it’s like a mini family. They love to compete and give each other a well-meaning bit of a hard time, but it’s done with humor and they really support each other,” said the coach. Coach Rabner loves the game and stays in touch with many of his past students and Quiz Bowl team members, including one who was recently on Jeopardy. “She came in second,” he said. “And back in 2008, I had a player who actually won Teen Jeopardy.” he said. Millburn Family Holds Second Annual Colon Cancer 5K

By Jason Cohen Millburn family raised $40,000 for colon cancer last month. On March 4, the Dranikoff family, in conjunction with Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston, held the 5K Run for Colon Cancer research. In 2016, Joanna Dranikoff died
from stage IV colon cancer at age 46. In an effort to educate people about the disease and honor their mother, her children, Jeremy, 17, a senior at Millburn High School, Rebecca, 14, a freshman at Kushner and Abby, 13, a seventh grader at Millburn Middle School, or-
ganized the event. The fundraiser was held last year at the South Mountain Reservation in South Orange, but Rebecca explained they wanted more than just a 5k this year. The goal was to have something that appealed to people of all ages. In addition to the 5K, there
was Zumba, self-defense, yoga, cardio dance, baseball, lacrosse and volleyball, Krav Maga and a giant inflated colon sponsored by St. Barnabas Hospital that people could walk through. This variety of activities saw a spike in 200 people and $10,000 raised continued on page 19

With 500 people in attendance, Rebecca feels it was a big success. “It’s very comforting to know that there’s so many people that are willing to help with our cause and support our family,” Dranikoff said. Dranikoff reminisced about her mom. She said the two of them were very close and her mom was “witty, silly, smart, loyal and loving.” In addition to attending Kushner, her uncle Gary Berger is the assistant principal there. Berger explained that his sister-in-law’s death hit the family hard. In fact, when they discovered she had cancer, it was revealed it had actually been in her body for 10 years. According to the American Cancer Society, the recom-
mended screening age for colon cancer is 45. Colon cancer is the third deadliest cancer for men and women in the U.S. and is expected to cause 50,000 deaths this year. However, it is one of the most preventable cancers if caught early. “The whole purpose of the event is to get more people aware of the idea of colon cancer and get more people screened at a younger age,” Berger said. “It’s emotional for the family, but emotional in a good way.” Dranikoff hopes it becomes an annual event. In addition to hosting the fundraiser, she and her friend, Sivan Elisha, also started the Kushner Cancer Club in September. In the spring, the club will host a catwalk for cancer at the Short Hills Mall.

Turtle Back Zoo’s Turtle Rescue Sets Turtles Free

By Dawn M Chiossi ver at West Orange Turtle Back Zoo, it’s like having the world in the backyard, filled with animals to discover and learn about. One of the most interesting of those animals are the sea turtles. On February 26th, Turtle Recovery officials were thrilled to announce that they set free seven injured sea turtles back into the wild. There’s something majestic about these sea creatures. They are one of the most ancient of animals, having been around for an extraordinary 110 million years. Unfortunately, all species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered. The Sea Turtle Recovery Organization, located inside the Turtle Back Zoo, opened its doors in December of 2016. continued from page 20 more. Sea turtles are different from other turtles because their shell is streamlined for swimming through the water. Unlike other turtles, where retracting into their shell is a defense mechanism and a protective action--sea turtles cannot do this. In a very real way, it makes them vulnerable. In the case of these recently rescued seven sea turtles, they were cold stunned in Cape Cod Bay. That’s where the efforts of Sea Turtle Recovery come in. They are responsible for the vet care, medicine, surgeries, staffing, education, and other needs of sea turtles. Even more, these passionate people are advocates for these sick and injured creatures. Their mission is to set them free once they recover. The inspiration for the Sea Turtle Recovery Center came from two devoted marine scientists, Bill Deerr and Brandi Biehl seeking to provide injured sea tur-
tles in New Jersey the same kind of immediate long term care that other sea turtle recovery centers out of state have. That way the turtles do not have to endure stressful travel outside of the state. “A number of Sea Turtles came in when they failed to migrate to warm water before temperatures become too cold. They stop eating and become lethargic, they need help to survive. While sea turtles do not nest in New Jersey, four species use our coast frequently for feeding and travel,” Biehl explains. Before being set free, the turtles were microchipped to be studied. So why aid sea turtles? These creatures are important to humans regarding food sources--Green Sea Turtles will graze on and control sea grass for fish nurseries that will ultimately provide us with food. According to Biehl, sea turtles can be an indicator species as well. That means if their populations get sick and
start washing ashore in massive numbers, they may indicate problems with their and our food supply such as crab, clams, fish and other seafood that is so very beneficial to the ecosystem. “In a world that seems so full of negative stories and events, you only have to look so far as the sea turtle for hope,” Biehl shares. “Some of these turtles come in with a weak pulse, failed kidneys, propeller cuts all the way through their shells, ingestion of balloons...they have every reason not to survive, but they never give up. Even when they are in shallow water kiddie pools that are just inches deep, they push themselves off of the bottom and try to gain strength to swim, they take deep breaths and lift their heads high, they eat or respond to tube feeding and never give up. Each day they fight to survive...They inspire hope by beating the odds over and over,”

United Way of Northern New Jersey Announces New Board Members

nited Way of Northern New Jersey is pleased to announce three new members to its Board of Trustees: Meghan Hunscher of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, Ednan “Eddie” Rizvi from Rutgers University and Kimberly Sacramone of HLW. United Way serves the five-county region of Morris, Somerset, Suburban Essex, Sussex and Warren counties. The new board members further broaden and strengthen the range of expertise reflected on the 18-member board, said United Way of Northern New Jersey CEO John Franklin. As President and CEO of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, Hunscher manages and leads the business association, which has more than 800-member companies. Prior to this new role, Hunscher served as executive director for the Morris County Economic Development Corporation. There, she increased membership and funding for the organization while collaborating with other entities on economic development initiatives. A licensed professional planner, Hun-

scher serves as president of the New Jersey Association of Planning and Zoning Administrators. Since 2015, Rizvi has served as an emergency services employee at Rutgers University. He is also a volunteer firefighter with the Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department. Along with her new role as board member, Sacramone has also been involved with United Way as a member of the United Way Commercial Real Estate Network Steering Committee where she helps plan an annual luncheon that recognizes the commercial real estate industry. Throughout its five-county footprint, United Way is working to improve the lives of families and individuals who are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) or in poverty.
