By Jason Cohen ivingston resident Dr. Andrew Hutter recently took a group of doctors on a medical mission to Israel. The trip, titled Maimonides Medical Delegation, is funded through Israel Bonds and takes doctors from
throughout the country every other year to learn about medicine and doctors in the Jewish homeland. He started the program a decade ago with his friend and colleague Dr. Burt Herbstman. In March he went on the sixth trip with the group.
Safe barn/outdoor homes needed for one or more impounded feral cats who can't be returned to their caregivers (impounded from local towns that don't allow TNR). Cats will be neutered, vaccinated, and receive all necessary testing and treatment. A shelter can be provided, as well as an enclosure for the transition period. Cat food can be provided on an ongoing basis if needed. Placements must be found before the next cats are impounded. Contact Mt. healthcare, doctors treat people just like here. Doctors don’t care if the patient is an Arab or someone from a neighboring country, if someone is hurt or sick, they get help. During the excursions to Israel he has met with fellow orthopedic surgeons, observed trauma hospitals, visited Schneider Hospital just outside of Tel Aviv, a medical center that has treated children for everything from the flu to cancer, learned about promising new developments for medical marijuana’s use in treating everything from osteoarthritic pain to lower back problems and fibromyalgia and even witnessed a hospital treating a child from Syria. He noted that one of the cooler experiences on this past trip was meeting doctors from Shayetet 13 – Israel’s Navy SEALs. They were among the people who rescued the boys trapped in a cave last year in Thailand.
Israel often gets a bad reputation because of the media and the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) and hopefully trips like this will change that, Hutter stressed. “By getting people there, they really see what’s going on,” he said. “They see the truth.” The group also met with Magen David Odom, the EMS unit in Israel and saw what it is like to respond to trauma firsthand. He recalled how when he started the program 10 years ago he was just getting involved with the Israeli Bonds Board. But ultimately, it was his goal for doctors to experience Israel, learn and have fun. The trips usually have between 20 to 40 people and often many go more than once. “I thought it would be really cool if we did a doctors trip to Israel,” Hutter said. “Israel doesn’t discriminate and that’s the message that doesn’t get out to the public.”

A Symposium in Livingston
I
By: Megan Roche f you could sit down with a journalist, who would it be and what would you ask them? On May 8, residents from Livingston and surrounding communities got exactly that chance. During the year, the National Council of Jewish Women, Essex, host lunch and learn programs, where the public can learn about a variety of topics. Their spring event, Breaking News: Navigating Today’s Media, opened up a crucial conversation between journalists and news consumers on the future of the news industry. “The current media and with the press under attack all the time, newsrooms are bleeding money and people, everyone is talking about what’s real and what’s fake news, it’s a critical time to talk about journalism and where we’re headed and what we can do to be better consumers of the news,” Stephanie Abrahams, Director of Advocacy
and Community Engagement for NCJW Essex, said. With all the events going on in the world relating to the media, it’s no surprise that NCJW wanted to give people a chance to understand how the media works and the importance of a free press in society. The panel discussion on May 8 featured Stephanie Clifford, an Investigative Reporter and NY Times Contributor, Marshall Cohen, a CNN Reporter and Producer, Rob Nelson, WABC-TV Anchor and Reporter, and Kevin Lerner, a Professor of Journalism at Marist College. The four panelists were chosen thanks to their background in the media but also their influence and education on a wide range of media topics. “We wanted to cover all of our bases and give our attendees a chance to hear from all different types of media personnel.
Kevin Lerner, Stephanie Clifford, Rob Nelson, and Marshall Cohen prepare to speak at Breaking News: Navigating Today’s Media
This room can be a safe space for people to ask their questions and get the true answers to those questions.” Abrahams said. During the program, each panelist answered questions about their respective field and how their field influences journalism as a whole. For Rob Nelson, speaking to the public and answering questions about the broadcast medium is extremely
important. “There has always been a fascination with how the news business works so any chance we have to help explain that process, I think is a good thing for people who consume the news. It’s an interesting time to be in the news media right now so I think today was an important discussion to have to better continued on page 17

Essex County’s Annual Older American Heritage Month, Legend Awards are Presented to Five Essex County Senior Citizens
ssex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and the Essex County Division of Senior Services hosted the Annual Essex County Older Americans Heritage Month Celebration on Tuesday, May 7th in the Essex County Robert O’Toole Building in Essex County Cedar Grove Park in Cedar Grove. May is recognized as National Older Americans Month. During the ceremony, DiVincenzo presented Essex County Legends Awards to Stephanie Gerstein from West Orange, Bessie Johnson from Newark, Claire Seidner Scholz from Livingston, Yusuf Statum from Newark and Catherine F. Willis from East Orange. “Older Americans Month is
an opportunity for us to recognize the tremendous contributions our senior citizens have made to shape and mold today’s community and bring attention to the contributions they continue to make on a daily basis to improve our quality of life. Active in all aspects of life, our senior population is proving that you don’t slow down after you reach a certain age,” DiVincenzo said. “Our honorees have exhibited a tremendous amount of responsibility by advocating for and providing assistance that is helping their fellow seniors to remain active and continue living in our community,” he added. “Our Legends Award recipients demonstrate that you
can still contribute and make a difference in your community no matter what your age. All of our seniors are role models for the contributions they have made and continue to make, inspiring our young-

Essex County Executive... continued from page 13 The award winners were nominated by social service agencies and community organizations that work closely with the Essex Division of Senior Services and were chosen because they are positive role models for the younger generation, have worked tirelessly to assist fellow seniors and made tremendous contributions to improve the quality of life. The honorees are as follows: Stephanie Gerstein from West Orange is a volunteer with Listen to Children, the Friend Advocate Program, Reading Buddies, Interfaith Hospitality Network and Succeed2gether. The plaque presented to her states: “Stephanie Gerstein makes a positive impact on every person she meets. Much of her volunteer

work is focused on children. She instills a love of reading and promotes literacy by reading stories to elementary school students in class, tutors and helps homeless children with their homework and teaches children the card game Bridge, allowing them to develop socialization skills and play games that are not on a computer. Her personal touches – sharing homemade cookies, using humor and truly listening – allows her to connect with the younger generation. Ms. Gerstein also lends a helping hand to seniors, including one woman who she helped organize her bills and regain control of her life after her mother passed away. Ms. Gerstein is a special person whose enthusiasm motivates and inspires others.”

“I am totally humbled at receiving this recognition. I get so much more personally than what I give,” Gerstein said. Bessie Johnson from Newark is a retired food service worker with Newark Public Schools volunteers at the Essex County Weequahic Park Café in the Park program and knits lap blankets for seniors in nursing facilities. The plaque presented to her states: “Providing delicious and nutritious food has been an ongoing theme in the life of Ms. Johnson. For 28 years, she worked as an employee of the Newark Public Schools Food Service Department serving meals to elementary and high school students. After retiring from a second career in retail, she returned to her love of cooking and baking to feed children at a day care center. She also has
utilized her crocheting skills to create hats for infants taking their first breaths in area NICUs and blankets for hospitalized chemotherapy patients and seniors in nursing facilities. She currently can be found back in the kitchen serving lunch to participants in the Essex County Senior Café program in Weequahic Park. We are proud to recognize this “super volunteer” as an Essex County Legend.” “Thank you for thinking this much of me. I have always enjoyed working with children and seniors,” Johnson said. continued from page 14 Orange and is a member of the Livingston Senior Advisory Committee and AARP Chapter in Livingston. The plaque presented to her states: “As a school psychologist and supervisor in the Irvington Public School District for 28 years, Claire Scholz impacted the lives of generations of students and parents. When New Jersey mandated sex education be included in the curriculum, she took the lead to train other teachers, wrote curriculum guides and became a well-respected authority throughout the state. In retirement, Ms. Scholz is a devoted volunteer at the Margulies Center at the JCC in West Orange, where she has served in various leadership roles and essentially runs the Kosher Nutrition Lunch Program. She further advocates for seniors as a member of the Livingston Senior Advisory Committee and Livingston AARP Chapter. Ms. Scholz’ desire to give back to her community is an inspiration to us all.” “I worked in Irvington for 28 years and
enjoyed every day and I continue to work because I enjoy what I’m doing. This is a tremendous honor and I appreciate it,” Scholz said. Yusuf Statum from Newark worked 24 years at UMDNJ, helped found and organize the annual Scudder Homes Reunion, and was a founding member and president of the Central Ward Community Group. The plaque presented to him states: “Mr. Statum has always involved himself in helping others and building a stronger community. He assisted older Americans as a senior service worker at UMDNJ for 24 years. After lamenting that the community only came together in times of grief and crisis, he was instrumental in organizing an annual three-day celebration on Howard Street. The event has evolved into the “Scudder Homes Reunion” and continues to strengthen the bonds between neighbors. He also is a founding member and President of the Central Ward Community Group, a grassroots group that has been championing
and advocating for the neighborhood for the last two decades. We are proud to honor Mr. Statum as an Essex County Legend for his leadership, activism and concern on behalf of his neighbors.” “My reward of helping others is to see the smiles on their faces. I appreciate this award greatly, but I would continue to do what I’ve been doing even if I wasn’t being recognized,” Statum said. Catherine F. Willis from East Orange cont. on page 18

continued from page 10 connect with the people who are served by the product that we all work so hard to put out there.” Nelson said. Clifford agreed with Nelson but found it’s a two-pronged approach to getting the news out into the community. “Showing people how we do our work is important but it’s also really important for journalists to hear from people who are consuming their work. We need to understand what our readers want and what are we doing well and what are we not doing well. There is a huge mismatch between what we think we are doing well and what the public views as doing well right now.” Clifford said. For Lerner, his educational background in the field and the combined effort to teach the journalists of tomorrow, he encourages people to think critically about news as a whole before they form their opinion. “I think it’s so important for people to think critically about
the news. It’s very easy for people to get into the habit of thinking that news is just there and not to hold the people producing it responsible for doing it well. People need to understand the process in which the news comes about.” Lerner said. Cohen agreed with Lerner, showcasing that the basics of working in a newsroom are still very much present today. “In many ways, journalism is under attack right now. It’s important to speak up and use our voice, explain what we do, how we tell the truth, we check our facts, and the most fundamental elements of what we do, we’re still doing it and it’s important to make sure everyone knows that.” Cohen said. NCJW will host another lunch and learn in the fall. Their fall 2018 luncheon focused on the Me Too movement and shared experiences from sexual abuse survivors. More information on the fall 2019 luncheon will be available soon at www.ncjwessex.org.

Ms. Willis empowered young girls through her work with the Girl Scouts and was a founding member of the first state-funded day care program, which continues to operate today in East Orange. She also impacted the community through the positions she held with the City of East Orange and County of Essex. I’ve always lived my life being ready to help another person,” Willis said. Other cultural celebrations celebrate African American Heritage, Irish Heritage, Italian Heritage, Jewish Heritage, Latino Heritage, Portuguese Heritage and Women’s History. any stores employ “loss leaders” during the back-to-school shopping rush. Essentially, loss leaders are products sold at a loss to attract customers into the store. Retailers hope shoppers will be tempted by a “penny deal” or another steep discount and then stick around, ultimately purchasing full-price items. Shoppers can use loss leaders to their advantage. Those looking to save on school
supplies should watch the circulars and commercials for these barely break-even deals and stock up on loss leaders, according to the savvy shoppers at The Krazy Coupon Lady. This may require shopping for supplies over the course of a few days, as stores may feature different loss leaders during the week. By doing so, at the end of the week, shoppers may end up with much of their school supplies at quite the discount.

Popular Gazebo Concerts Return to the Livingston Oval by Steve Sears
C
ome July, the end of the weekend becomes a little more relaxing. The reason? The Township of Livingston resumes its popular Gazebo concerts Summer Concerts are held at the Gazebo on Memorial Oval on Robert Harp Drive every Sunday during the month of July from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The summer concerts are sponsored by Regal Bank, who have been sponsoring the concerts for over 10 years. “We are very fortunate that Regal Bank (headquartered in Livingston) sponsors the shows,” says Liliana Branquinho, Township of Livingston Senior & Adult Enrichment and Special Events Supervisor. As for many people attend the
weekly shows, she says, “It depends on the band. We can have anywhere from 300 to 500. The concerts are well received every year. Everybody is used to having the concerts on Sundays.” Branquinho also adds that, In the event of rain or extreme heat, concerts are not canceled but moved indoors to the Livingston High School Auditorium. “We are fortunate to have a great relationship with our Board of Education and they absolutely are a great help during inclement weather. This line-up for this year is as follows: 7/7 Epic Soul (performing classic soul and R&B plus Today's hits);7/14 Joey Arminio & the Family - Oldies Show (50's and 60's music);
7/21 Route 80's band (80s music); and 7/28 The B-Street Band (Bruce Springsteen's tribute band). “So many towns offer these concerts, but I think the gazebo provides the community a venue to come out and listen to some music, bring your kids, set down a blanket, have your friends there, and just listen to so music outdoors. It’s a summer tradition for many people,
DO IT ONCE, DO IT RIGHT!
and it really brings the community together. People look forward to it, and I have to tell you that week after week I see a lot of the same people. No matter what the music is, a lot of the same people come out, different demographics, different age groups – they all come out to enjoy something together.” For more information, visit www.livingstonnj.org/1049/ Summer-Concert-Series-July.

Robinson, who has been in the district since 1998, was one of four administrators from across New Jersey to receive the recognition this year. Other honorees were from Westfield, Belmar and Lake Cuomo. During his tenure in the Livingston Public School District, Robinson “has earned the trust of the board of education and the community over the course of many years,” according to a press release issued by the school district. In addition to his fiscal responsibilities, Robinson is in charge of all school buildings and grounds, and acts as a li-

Robinson has also “been instrumental in monitoring many of the joint projects that have benefited the Livingston community,” according to the district. college student from Livingston earned the top prize at the 16th annual New Jersey Undergraduate Mathematics Competition (NJUMC) at Raritan Valley Community College. Sofia Shvaiko, a freshman at the County College of Morris (CCM), won the highest-ranking individual score overall and the highest-ranking female score at the April 13 contest in Branchburg. She was among 84 participants from two- and four-year colleges across New Jersey that competed individually and as teams. Shvaiko and her teammate Gabriel Lukijaniuk also won
first place for highest-ranking team from a two-year school. The team’s faculty advisor, Associate Professor Kelly Fitzpatrick, said the wins were “truly impressive results” and thanked the mathematics department for its support of the students competing at NJUMC. Shvaiko, an international student from Kharkiv, Ukraine who is currently living in Livingston, has competed in several math competitions in Eastern Europe, according to the County College of Morris. “My family was proud of me that I proved my knowledge outside of my country cont. on page 23

After she graduates from the County College of Morris, Shvaiko plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University and become a software developer, according to the County College of Morris. Shvaiko’s teammate, Lukijaniuk, a Hackettstown resident and County College of Morris freshman, came in third place in the individual competition. “Winning at the competition was strange,” Lukijaniuk said. “I wasn’t sure how
I compared to other people who majored in math and had the same passion and studying habits as me. So I was actually quite surprised when I had found that I placed that high.” Like Shvaiko, Lukijaniuk aims to complete his bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University. His ideal job, he said, would be a combination of math professor and math researcher. The competition was held as part of the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, which is a oneday event held in April each year.

Climbing Beyond Cancer:
Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience
O
n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience. Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-
periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both
those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event. Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf
ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering. “I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab. S c h wa b a ttended an Epic Experience camp in May 2015. Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.” Schwab joined the
Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015. In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors. Schwab enjoys climbing at Randolph Climbing Center and thought it would be the perfect place to fundraise for Epic

Spruce Up for Summer
M
ake your backyard the perfect outdoor space To make the transition to summer season effortless, there may be some backyard upgrades and prep to be done to ensure your outdoor space is in tip-top shape. From your pool and patio to the grill, these tips can help get your backyard summer-ready. Overhaul the Patio Patios and decks are often considered the hub of the backyard, so consider sprucing yours up by power-washing the stone to remove any winter buildup or use stain for a complete refresh. Adding a pergola or umbrellas can help protect you from the elements and, for added comfort, consider installing an outdoor ceiling fan for humid days and a fire pit or patio heater for cooler nights. Upgrade Outdoor Furniture To ensure your backyard furniture lasts, invest in materials such as teak wood, redwood, cedar or stainless steel, which are typically durable and low-maintenance. If you want to add a personal touch, consider colorful cushions, throw pillows or an area rug made of weatherproof fabric. Smarten Up Your Pool and Backyard With smart homes on the rise, today’s tech-savvy homeowners are not only looking to automate appliances and gadgets inside the home, but now want smart controls in their outdoor spaces, as well. For example, Hayward’s OmniHub smart pool control offers pool owners the convenience and customization of complete pool, spa and backyard lighting automation from smart devices.
Prep Your Grill Get ahead of barbecue season by building in ample time to prep your grill. Scrub or season your grill grates to avoid rust, stock up on charcoal and wood chips, check gas grills for leaks and fill up your propane tank. For safety, make sure your grill is at least 10 feet away from your home, outdoor structures and any trees or bushes. Convert Your Pool to Salt Water For the ultimate in pool luxury, consider switching your traditional chlorine pool to salt water. It’s a surprisingly simple project that can transform your pool experience. Salt pools offer owners soft, clean and clear water that won’t irritate eyes, dry out skin and hair, give off harsh odors or cause bathing suits to fade. Designed to be a convenient alternative to conventional chlorine, Hayward’s AquaRite system gently dissolves salt into the perfect amount of chlorine to sanitize your pool without harsh chemicals while creating velvety-smooth water. Keep the Bugs at Bay Mosquitos and other bugs can put a damper on outdoor entertaining, so be sure to stock up on repellents to ensure a bugfree backyard. Keep citronella or eucalyptus candles and torches on hand to maintain a pest-free space. Whether you’re planning a family barbecue or pool party, or just want a space that offers the ultimate in tranquility, visit hayward.com for more tips to help jumpstart your home improvement project.
