and raise money to help kids with heart conditions. This year proved unique, as it marked the first time that all three elementary schools in the Hanover Township school district participated in the campaign. Kicking off the event on Thursday, Jan. 18, Salem Drive followed AHA’s Jump Rope for Heart mission statement of “having fun, learning how to stay healthy and making a difference in the lives of others.” As part of this motto, a jump rope team from Lincoln Elementary School in Hasbrook Heights visited the students and performed a demonstration during the kickoff assembly. Sean Peterson, Salem Drive’s physical education teacher and one of the coordinators of the drive, has participated in the Jump Rope program for three years. He explained that parents helped students set up online pages where they could receive donations in exchange for jumping rope. The funds raised came mostly from parents and their coworkers, as well as the children’s extended family. With the insurance company American International Group matching a donation, the total amount raised came to $10,125 – far surpassing the original goal of $6,500. The American Heart Association’s website aided in the process by providing tips on fundraising, as well as links to stories of the children that the Jump Rope for Heart
