Whippany Park Baseball Reflects On Extraordinary Season

By Anya Bochman yle O’Neill, coach of the Whippany Park Wildcats baseball team and environmental science teacher at Whippany Park High school, approaches coaching from a personal perspective.

Having played and enjoyed the game his entire life, he wants the same appreciation for baseball for the students he coaches.

“You have to take into consideration the game itself,” O’Neill said.

“I am proud of my players. They are competitors and will go all out to win a baseball game.”

This take on the great American pastime proved to be the key to success for the Whippany Park Wildcats team, who made the cut for section two, group two in the State Finals under O’Neill’s leadership.

The team, which is comprised of 17 players from every grade, has played together much of their lives, in school

and in extracurricular recreational baseball teams. Any grade can try out for the team, which had seven upperclassmen varsity players last season.

As O’Neill describes it, the season was off to a somewhat rocky start.

“We beat some teams that were good, and finished with 10 wins and nine losses, and seeded ninth in the state tournament,” the coach stated.

Despite the losses, the team never lost its morale or considered themselves inferior to other high schools, according to O’Neill.

In the mid-season, Whippany Park made it to the quarterfinals in Morristown, where they squared off against Delbarton. Despite a 4-1 loss, the game seemed to allow the Whippany team to hit its stride.

“When we play together, we’re really good,” O’Neill said.

“Something just clicked.”

However, it is the North Jersey Section Two, Group Two semifinals that proved to be more memorable to the team, as it faced off against West Caldwell. Playing a very close game of 9-8, Whippany Park had a surprising advantage of not playing on home turf.

“That game was huge for us – once you lose, you’re

out,” O’Neill stated.

“Caldwell was more relaxed, which was to their disadvantage.”

The Wildcats’ Kyle Dangler went 4-for-6 with three runs, including the game-winning run

in the 10th inning, leading to a victory in extra innings.

After defeating Rutherford 10-5 and Pascack Lake 3-0 in the State Sectionals, the Wildcats proceeded to the State Finals in Toms River, which their coach described as “the place to be.”

Upon arriving, the Whippany team busied itself with taking in the atmosphere and attending interviews. Although the game ultimately proved to be a loss to Manasquan, O’Neill and his players choose to focus on their successes.

“We had a great run. It’s hard to lose after such a streak, but my players looked at the bigger picture,” the coach said. “We’ll have a chance to do this again.”

They also proved themselves as worthy competitors, as the coach conceded that prior to last season, Whippany was not considered a “big baseball school.”

Following the graduation of Whippany Park’s senior team members, O’Neill is looking for new and returning members to “step up” and “take charge.”

“We’ll be even better next year – that is my coach’s expectation,” he stated. “We’ll be stronger and compete, and have faith in each other.”

Whippanong Library Takes A Page From Jack And The Beanstalk

The logical answer to creating a garden localized entirely within the library was a tower garden a vertical, aeroponic tower structure that typically allows growing up to 20 plants such as fruits, vegetables, spices or flowers, using a singular unit. The entire system relies on only water and does not use soil - only nutrients

The three staffers involved in overseeing the library’s programs – Amy Puskas, Theresa Swala, and Melissa Meola – agreed that the tower garden, in place for a year as of today, would be an excellent year-round educational project for everyone. Funded through a grant by a party which stipulated public non-disclosure as part of its donation, the garden project is intended to help people, especially children, become interested in gardening.

The garden, however, is by no means limited to kids; families and anyone under the supervision and guidance of a Whippanong Library volunteer leader can plant and tend to the tower garden’s produce. The garden is also available to scouts, classes and any related groups that wish to grow vegetables as part of a class project, earn a badge or fulfill community service hours.

The aims of the tower garden are both straightforward and environment-oriented; by being available to people of all ages and backgrounds, the garden can both foster an interest in healthy eating and create future gardeners.

“If anything, we created an awareness to an alternative to traditional gardening that anyone can own and use,” Levin states. “We hope people will learn more about the beginnings of the food chain, how plants

grow and about gardening.”

The results of the garden’s harvest – the vegetables grown via its system - are made available to the Whippanong Library patrons and, of course, the gardeners.

“When our first program ended last year the participating children created an ‘upside-down’ salad that they took home for their families to enjoy,” says Levin. “The beneficiaries of the harvest may be a class, scout troop, food bank or community group.”

Of course, the innovative gardening technique is also of benefit to the Whippanong Library.

As STEAM activities gather, well, steam – both children and adults become more interested in sustainability and environmental innovation. Adding an “A” for “Art + Design” to the now-ubiquitous acronym of STEM, the STEAM programs involved turn to new developments as a way to ensure progress in a time of economic uncertainty.

“We are showing the community at large we are a good mix of the traditional library – materials to borrow, storytimes, etc. – and the library of tomorrow – new ways to learn and explore for people of all ages,” Levin points out. “The township’s children are curious about STEAM activities and the tower garden is a way of meeting that interest. Adults, too, are fascinated about this different way to garden.”

Garden State Opera To Perform at Caldwell University

T

he Garden State Opera will perform “Francesca da Rimini,” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, and “The Marriage Counselor,” by Francesco Santelli, on Oct. 22 at Caldwell University.

Singers from the Caldwell University Chorale and the Masterwork Chorus Camerata will perform in the production, sung in German and English and accompanied by full orchestra, at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium.

Dancers from Manhattanville College and Montclair State University will perform under the direction of Lynne Needle, artistic director of Art of Motion Dance Co., and choreographer Allison Pagano.

The Debate: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids vs. In-Office Hearing Evaluations & Fittings

ecent debates surrounding the Over-theCounter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 (OTC) have made headlines in the hearing healthcare industry. The OTC Act makes certain types of “personal sound amplification products” (PSAP) available to adults with mild or moderate hearing impairment without the need for a professional evaluation.

Beautification, Safety Event Planned For Hanover Park HS 10 Year Anniversary

rganizers of the nationally recognized One Day One School beautification and safety initiative have announced a campus cleanup event at Hanover Park High School on Sat., Oct. 28.

The nationally recognized and award-winning program brings together tree experts, school officials, town representatives, local companies and students, all volunteering their own time and efforts to make their community school grounds cleaner and safer. The program was inspired by Tom “Ace” Gallagher of Ace Gallagher Stump Grinding Service of Whippany, when he noticed dead tree branches hanging over a path as he walked his son to Salem Drive School.

Having plenty of experience in clearing storm damage at various schools, Gallagher volunteered his company’s services after learning there was no budget to clean up the potential hazard.

Through the years, Gallagher, alongside planning teams from East Hanover, Florham Park and Hanover Township, has maximized resources across multiple municipalities to support this beautification program.

The planning teams will include the municipal officials, law enforcement, school administration, organized sports, scouts, local individuals and businesses, along with organizations including Rotarians and The Knights of Columbus.

Many of the area’s best tree companies and landscaping services are on board once again, and they remain committed to making this day successful. The organizers are quick to identify the grassroots, voluntary nature of the program as the central key to its ongoing success.

“The entire initiative is based on encouraging students to come out to participate and take ownership of their schools,” Gallagher said. “It provides a way

to give back to the community to provide our students and our community a school that is safe, beautiful and a place we can be proud of.”

One Day One School, now entering its 10th year, is based on the simple idea that a single day of volunteer teamwork will go a long way in making the community’s school grounds cleaner and safer.

Elsa Warms Hearts Through Her Mild Manner And Companionship

By Cheryl Conway hen Chris Muench of Livingston first got her daughter a Chihuahua for college graduation she did not realize this would unleash her passion and lead to her current role- owner of a pet therapy dog.

“I wanted one of my own,” says Muench, when her daughter eventually moved out and took her dog, Baloo, named from “The Jungle Book,” with her. “That dog was fabulous.

These are really nice dogs.”

So Muench got her own Apple Head Chihuahua and named her Princess Fiona, from the movie “Shrek.” When Fiona died after nine years from her heart condition, Muench got an eight week old, long-haired Chihuahua and named her Elsa from “Frozen.”

She got her from her cousin in Pennsylvania who breeds them.

When Muench soon realized that Elsa was different than other dogs, she decided she needed to share her with others to brighten their day.

After a year of training, Elsa is now Elsa The Therapy Dog and even has her own Facebook page.

“Her personality was perfect for this,” says Muench. “I had another Chihuahua who was friendly but was skittish. Elsa is not afraid; she enjoys her work.

She doesn’t shake. Elsa does not make a peep; she’s just not a barker.”

She earned her certification four months ago from Bright and Beautiful with a certificate and a red leash that says Bright And Beautiful. As a trained therapy dog, Elsa volunteers with hospice visiting patients one on one with Muench. They also visit schools, hospitals and activity centers.

In order to be certified, a dog must be at least one year old and pass certain criteria. Muench had been working with her since she was eight weeks old.

As a volunteer for hospice’s Bear Hugs program for the past eight years, Muench started bringing Elsa with her to the West Orange Hospice to see how she behaved around people.

With the Bear Hugs program, Muench volunteers her time to create 14-inch stuffed memorial bears out of clothing for grieving families.

When she had lost her job from cutbacks as a bookkeeper in Fairfield, “I saw hospice needed volunteers; I didn’t want to sit around,” Muench explains. “You have to prove you can sew,” which she says she learned in her high school home economics class. From there she also started to volunteer at the hospice thrift store in Montclair.

We are thrilled that Ace and his team have chosen Hanover Park High School as the recipient of the 10-year-anniversary beautification and safety initiative.”

“I knew Hospice has a Paws Program,” says Muench. “We started training her right away.”

When she’d accompany Muench to hospice, she learned to go in the elevator and greet people, says Muench. “I trained her by

making sure she was socialized.”

She would also take Elsa to Inglemoore Nursing Home in Livingston for her training to work with wheelchairs and visit patients.

After a year of training, Muench had to pay a fee and continued on page 15

place in 2007 at Ridgedale Middle School in Florham Park, with many of the school’s own students among the group of enthusiastic volunteers.

Since then, the “environmental makeover” initiative has steadily expanded to include the participation of several additional tree services, school officials, town representatives, public works departments and community organizations, along with other local companies and sponsors. An environmental education element has also been incorporated into the program.

As stated by Mayor Joseph Pannullo, “The entire program speaks for itself, it’s an opportu-

nity for volunteers and business owners to give back and show their pride in their school and now has expanded into many other districts and community in New Jersey.”

One Day One School is the recipient of the 2009 NJ Green Architect Award, the NJ Department of Environment Protection Division of Forestry Award, NJ Shade Tree Association Award and the NJ Urban Forestry designation. “If a group of people are there she needs to stay,” says Muench. She also needs to remain calm and not get flustered if someone approaches with a wheelchair, cane and even crutches. She needs to know how to approach a wheelchair from the side. She was even tested to see how she responds to noisy pots and pans.

Bright and Beautiful has a list on its website on what potential therapy dogs need to do in order to pass, says Muench.

Once she passed, Muench registered Elsa with St. Barnabas Paws for Patients, earning her an orange leash.

They so far visited Care One

in Whippany spending one-on one time with a patient to provide companionship and support for patients. Elsa sits on the bed, gets treats, lays down, sits down.

“They have a calming effect with patients,” says Muench.

“Elsa goes in the bed, she just sleeps and the lady pets her.”

“Sometimes we go on bereavement calls to caregivers who want to see a dog,” says Muench. “Having Elsa there breaks the ice for me,” and sometimes helps to strike up a conversation. I visit as well. ” They are scheduled to attend an AARP meeting Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at the senior citizen center in Livingston which will feature a program on therapy dogs.

With two daughters grown and out on their own, Muench and Elsa keep themselves busy through their volunteer work.
