Homeless Vet Outreach Group Looks Forward to Vets Summer Fest 2019

ith the news cycle currently dominated by Democratic primary candidates, it’s impossible not to hear at least several plans and promises for helping the American veteran population. Yet it’s an issue that often doesn’t get enough attention, or at the very least is fraught with public misconceptions. For instance, according to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, 555 veterans experienced homelessness on any given day in 2018 in New Jersey. But Ray Chimileski, of Long Valley, founder and executive director of Operation Chillout (OCO), figures the true number is actually greater.

“Recently, we’ve had more requests for help [from homeless veterans] than ever,” Chimileski said. “It’s certainly not something you’d read about in the papers.”

Chimileski, who has background in domestic counter intelligence, explains this rise in homelessness in several ways. For one, the original generation of Vietnam vets that his organization helped at its inception is aging and requiring ever more care, such as placement in nursing homes. The younger veterans of wars in the Middle East are getting diagnosed with ailments such as PTSD

quicker, but not necessarily receiving the proper aid they need following the diagnosis.

As a result, there is a generational shift in younger veterans who are in need and have never experienced homelessness before. And unlike some of the older Vietnam veterans who have unfortunately gotten accustomed to chronic homelessness and developed certain survival skills, these younger men and women are truly out of their depth.

“A vet who has nowhere to go but is currently in a hospital for PTSD or injury is still homeless, but those numbers are often not counted,” Chimileski said.

Chimileski founded OCO on December 21, 2000 with several friends, after encountering a group of homeless Vietnam veterans living in the open under a railroad trestle in northern New Jersey.

When asked how they could be of help, Chimileski’s group was told, simply, “It’s cold.” Immediately recognizing the need, the incipient OCO took it upon itself to collect warm clothing and other survival supplies.

From there, the organization grew, becoming a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2011. Its mission is hinged upon recognizing the inherent worth of every homeless person and providing emergency supplies and survival gear to the most vulnerable

members of the community without regard to religious affiliation, ethnic heritage or state of life.

The all-volunteer outreach organization is dedicated to ending the crisis of homelessness for veterans throughout New Jersey and parts of North East Pennsylvania by promoting awareness of the multifaceted nature of poverty; advocating for sustainable solutions and programs serving the needs of the poor, addicted, abused and homeless; organizing for peace and economic justice to address systemic inequities challenging impoverished communities; and engaging in direct compassionate action including the collection, dissemination and delivery of supplies to homeless people and the agencies that provide for their temporary care.

One of the tasks before the OCO is seeking out veterans on the streets, many of whom now face acute Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as other chronic illnesses, and are a group represented heavily amongst the general homeless population.

Anthony DeStefano, who was a Major in the U.S. Army and had served for 24 years, is OCO’s Homeless Veterans Outreach Coordinator. His primary task is finding the homeless veterans in need, and providing appropriate help – whether through clothing donation or transport to medical facilities and housing.

Combat PTSD is something DeStefano, of Hackettstown, is intimately familiar with, as he acquired the condition while serving in Iraq and was officially diagnosed with it following his honorable discharge from the military in 2006.

“I met [Chimileski] in 2007 shortly after I was discharged and

was suffering from PTSD,” DeStefano said of his original involvement with OCO. “I needed something for catharsis and to turn my life around.”

A crucial aspect of OCO that both DeStefano and Chimileski depend on is the annual Vets Summer Fest, which is the organization’s largest fundraiser. Held this year on Saturday, Aug. 10, the festival provides OCO with funding that enables it to undertake its seasonal outreach campaigns. For instance, in 2018, OCO provided 35,000 bottles of water and 25,000 backpacks to the homeless veteran population.

Such supplies are more crucial than the public may initially understand. As a sobering example, Chimileski recalled an incident ten years ago when a homeless vet died after drinking water from the Hackensack River during the summer, a tragedy that could have been avoided if he had access to clean drinking water.

“We get five new calls a day on our rapid response helpline from homeless veterans in the summer,” Chimileski said. “If all the people we have helped so far stood together holding hands, they would form a line 21 miles long.”

Another initiative that OCO has recently taken up is tiny homes for homeless vets. Many veterans face challenges returning from military service - finding a decent job, making a living wage, reintegrating back to civilian life, navigating the maze of support service providers, as well as physical and emotional stress. Many veterans cannot sustain incomes needed for their own homes or apartments, lapsing into homelessness. OCO’s Tiny Home

So we try to intervene early with the younger generation of veterans. program offers an affordable, healthy and respectful alternative to shelters, halfway houses and unsafe community living arrangements.

In lieu of full state support for veteran housing, these energy-efficient domiciles are a true step towards independent living.

The recent recipient of such a home is a young vet who Chimileski described as having overcome addiction and gotten “his head on straight.”

“This is the population we serve, and we wish them a lot of luck,” Chimileski said, while pointing out that contrary to public perception, most vets who struggle with substance abuse do so as a result of accidental addiction to opiate pain killers following legitimate treatment.

“It’s a myth that [homeless veterans] take drugs,” Chimileski said. “Most end up where they are due to economic and psychological reasons.”

The essence of OCO is rapid response – it has a helpline equipped to handle emergency requests for help. Though Chimileski explained that the organization’s focus is on immediate problems which differentiates it from groups that offer case management over time, it’s impossible for those involved – an all-volunteer staff – not to notice certain trends. For this reason, OCO has molded itself to certain ideals.

“Our philosophy is early intervention,” Chimileski stated. “Today we still see Vietnam vets who have been on the streets for decades and at this point, will never not be homeless. So we try to intervene early with the younger generation of veterans.”

The Vets Summer Fest makes much of this intervention and support possible. “[Chimileski] calls it a picnic, but it’s a really great festival,” DeStefano said. “There are live bands, tents and food vendors.”

Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Vasa Park in Budd Lake, the festival is open to the public, with all proceeds benefiting the veterans helped by OCO. There is no admission fee, a situation that the organizers feel comfortable with given enduring public generosity.

“We used to have a sliding scale idea, but we got rid of that once we realized that attendees are even more generous than we anticipated,” Chimileski commented. “People just donate towards the cause, and it helps us for months and months with funding for hotels, phonelines and outreach events.”

The festival opens at 11 a.m., with what DeStefano described as a “major tribute” to veterans commencing at noon. Attendees can expect a guest speaker, pipes and drums performing patriotic music, and the Honor Guard from the Morris County Sheriff’s Department singing the national anthem. The opening cere-

mony will wrap up with a rendition of “Taps.”

The musical acts performing at this year’s Vets Summer Fest include Dana Fuchs, an acclaimed American singer and songwriter known for a mix of Southern rock, soul, roots and blues. Two of Fuch’s albums, Bliss Avenue and Songs from the Road reached the Top 10 of the Blues Album Chart of Billboard magazine. Fuchs will take the stage at 3 p.m., after an opening act by local favorites Atlanta Café Band. DeStefano’s own classical rock band, B-Sides, will round out the music portion of the event at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to the musical entertainment, there will also be a motorcycle run, car show, bike run, food, beer and wine, and some 60 vendors. Family-friendly events for the children in attendance are also on the bill for the festival.

“It’s going to be really good,” DeStefano said. “And the money raised from this event goes a long way in helping us continue our cause.”

The turnout for last year’s Vets Summer Fest was approximately 2,000 people. According to DeStefano, an average of 1,500 attendees is a typical turnout. The festival is sponsored by Millington Bank, Transwestern, Navitend, WRNJ, WXPN and Joe Hirsh Productions.

Chimileski attributes OCO’s ongoing success to a nonpartisan focus on helping homeless veterans.

“We keep ourselves non-political and all volunteers are welcome – not just vets,” Chimileski stated. “Every form of help is important as it all goes to the men and women who are still on the streets. And everyone has something that they can do to help.”

As part of the countywide initiative, residents are urged to take the Stigma Free Pledge: https://morriscountystigmafree.org/takethe-pledge/ The Morris County Board of Freeholders in 2016 passed a resolution (joining several towns that had initiated the movement), designating Morris County as a Stigma-Free County and asked all of the county’s towns to consider enrolling.

“We are pleased that Hanover Park Regional has formally joined the Stigma-Free initiative,’’ said Morris County Freeholder Kathy DeFillippo, who has been the county governing board’s liaison to this effort.

“The students and staff at the two high schools already have been leaders in the Stigma-Free effort, and we look forward to their continuing energy and support in this initiative to help affected people seek recovery, without fear of stigma or reprisal,’’ she added.

Morris County has created a Stigma Free website www.morriscountystigmafree.org to call attention to the initiative, provide information and resources, and a calendar of upcoming events related to mental illness and substance abuse. A Stigma Free Toolkit also is available for towns, schools, colleges and universities, and faith-based organizations.

East Hanover Public Library: A True Hidden Gem

By Stefanie Sears ast Hanover Public Library has been a staple of East Hanover and a piece of the town’s history since 1923.

Since then, they have undergone plenty of renovations.

It began as a branch of Morris County Library in Mrs. LeMoyne Burliegh’s home in 1923 until 1958.

Because the Township of East Hanover began to grow its population, a need for a more substantial library unfolded. When the girl scouts got involved by organizing the collection of books, the library gradually began to flourish. The Whippany Construction Company even donated a little two-room house, which became the library’s new home. Originally located at the Restland Memorial Park, it was moved to behind the Municipal Building on Ridgedale

Avenue. The Girl Scouts operated the library during this time.

Burliegh’s daughter, Mrs. Leighton Speer, raised money for the library and began operating it in 1958. In 1962, the library outgrew its two-room compartment, so it was moved to the Town Hall Annex until it then outgrew this space in 1964. In 1968 it relocated once again into a former meeting room of the old Town Municipal Building.

Due to constant expansion and funds saved over the years, in 1978 the Library commissioned an expansion feasibility study by Witfield & Remnick Architects, which was approved January 1979. In 1980, the old firehouse building became available for the library after the Fire Department vacated and the Library decided to proceed without state funding. Construction eventually began in March 1983.

“She was a dynamic, very interesting woman & a member of the DAR,” says Gayle Carlson of Speer.

Carlson, the Library Director for 20 years, started out as a page when she was a student. Given the amount of years she has given the library her services, she has seen a lot of history within its walls.

One example is the statue stood outside of a mother reading to her children on a bench. About 10 years ago, this was purchased through donations dedicated to the late Roberta Anzalone, who used to bring her children to the library often.

“It just shows connections to the town and people’s connections to the library,” says Carlson.

Another example is when the children’s librarian of 20 years, Nancy Svorinich (who was fondly known as Mrs. S.) passed away last year. According to Carlson, Svorinich very much positively influenced the East Hanover library community.

“She basically brought children’s services to East Hanover,” she explains, “We went from someone reading a book or a picture book to activities and puppets and arts and crafts and music. One of the things she brought that was really cool was a bubble machine. The kids loved it. She turned it on with the music and the kids would just dance through the bubbles. That was innovative.”

As technology and current events evolve, libraries evolve right with them. One advancement East Hanover Public Library is using is the Morris Automatic Information Network (MAIN), a financially beneficial network that shares resources and services for patrons to be able to download materials to their personal devices.

“The Library's goal is to keep current with emerging trends, advances in technology and meet the community's need for services and resources,” says Carlson.

Another benefit that the library offers is wireless printing called PrinterOn, which is a Cloud service. After downloading the app, you can conveniently send your document to the closest library to print it out.

“The technology we have here is so state of the art. It’s up to date. Our computers are updated and software is updated regularly.”

There is often the constant question of whether or not libraries and physical books are becoming obsolete due to the ever-changing technology. However, it depends on the patrons and what they are looking for.

“It’s always changing. My favorite quote is, ‘We’re not just books,’” says Carlson, “People who do not use libraries think libraries are just books. We have programs, we have computers, we have wireless access. There’s downloadable material, whether it

is a magazine or book, audio, visual. We loan DVDs, we loan music, CDs. There’s a lot of collections and a lot overlap. A lot of depending on what people prefer.”

Although many libraries serve their locals similarly, Carlson says that East Hanover’s customer services stands out.

“Probably every library would say that about themselves, but we get to know our patrons and their families. They come to the circ desk to check out materials but they also would have a conversation.

Staff would save a book for them because they know that would interest them. I think just knowing the community and building that personal relationship with them.”

East Hanover Public Library has a lot of popular programming, such as story hours, family night, and tutoring for the kids and book clubs, senior craft day, and museum passes for adults. For more information about these and more, patrons are encouraged to explore the library’s Facebook page for updates.

However, one issue that the library has is lack of space for public meetings.

“The biggest demand we have is public meeting space,” explains Carlson, “Various local groups are looking for a place to meet and students are looking for quiet study space. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate everyone since we have a small activity room that is primarily used for story times and library sponsored programs.”

Summer reading is now underway. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories and there are programs based around children’s summer reading lists to make reading fun. Because the state chooses the theme, most libraries in New Jersey adhere to it. Although the kids do have their own required summer reading for school, participants for this activity choose what to read and in turn they earn credits and prizes. To kick this off, Morris Museum visited with a planetarium and were able to project the night sky onto a balloon type igloo.

Another activity that East Hanover Public Library does to encourage reading is Paws for Reading. For this, kids read to therapy dogs at the library.

“It doesn’t matter what you read. If you want to read a magazine or something digital, it’s putting time in reading. It’s been documented that children who do not read over the summer lose reading skills. Kids backtrack in their reading abilities, so that’s why it’s good to keep them reading.”

Allegro School Recognizes Girl Scout Troop and Celebrates New Swings and Playground

embers of Hanover Township Girl Scout Troop 6174 were recognized at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for helping a special group of people. The troop of 23 girls learned about the Allegro School, a local not for profit school educating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their need to replace swings which had been removed due to age and deterioration.

The scouts learned about sensory processing disorder which impacts the way that individuals with autism process the sensory information they receive from their environments. They learned that playground swings can be utilized as a strategy to change an individual’s arousal level to help them focus and attend.

They learned that children with autism, just like other children, enjoy playing on the playground. Playgrounds, swings in particular, are used as a positive reinforcement for students’ efforts in their

school programming and learning continues to occur on the playground as the children apply concepts learned in the classroom.

Wanting to bring back the health benefits and enjoyment of the swings for their peers and neighbors, the scouts focused their Bronze award project on helping the students at Allegro School.

They decided their project would be to raise money to purchase new swings for the Allegro playground and raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder and the Allegro School.

On June 13th, the school held a formal ribbon cutting to recognize and thank the girl scouts and the many other community members and donors who helped make the playground project possible. In addition to the new swings, the revitalized playground includes a bench dedicated in memory of Karyn Datzko, a recently deceased teacher at Allegro School. Sal Iannaccone was also recognized for his oversight of the project.

Spring Sports Season for the Hanover Area is Once Again Successful

oth Hanover Park Regional and Whippany Park High School spring sports teams faced great competition this year and did their best during their respective sea-

sons.

The Boys Park Regional (Hanover Park and Whippany Park Co-op) Lacrosse team, coached by Nicholas Esposito, finished with a 4-9 record. Key wins were over Parsippany Hills and North Warren, as well as a victory over Oratory Prep. It was their first win in a new, more challenging Klank conference. Top player performance was from Ryan Salus, who finished his career with 30 goals and 10 assists and was named 2nd Team All-Klank Conference in NJILL and 2nd Team for the Colonial Division in NJAC. Goalie Kevin Julich, also a senior, was 2nd Team All-Conference selection.

Tara Geisser’s Boys Varsity Tennis team for Hanover Park finished at 12-2 on the season, and were undefeated in their conference, being named conference champions.

Rachel Maggioncalda, Head Coach of the Hanover Park Boys Track team, led her squad to a 2-3 record in Dual meet competition this season.

Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. pion in the Triple Jump, jumping 46 feet and 7 inches, and is currently ranked 9th in the state of New Jersey. Sabeh was also selected for the NJAC First Team All-Conference team and Morris County First Team honors. Junior Jack Stein had an excellent season in the Javelin, finishing third in Morris County with a throw of 158 feet and 10 inches and earning NJAC Second Team honors. Junior sprinter Ethan Gayle was a group-championship qualifier in the 100m, and also earned NJAC Second Team honors for his performance in the 100m dash and 200m dash this season. Sophomore Daniel Gregory also earned NJAC Second Team honors for his excellent performance this season in shot put and discus. Dan earned 42.33 varsity points this season and established himself as an athlete to watch in both the county and section. The distance team was led by junior Ryan Quiogue, who was recognized with an NJAC honorable mention award for his performance in the 1600m (4:43) and the 800m (2:03). The team’s hurdle corps had an excellent season, exhibiting depth and placing in both the intermediate and high hurdles at various meets. The hurdlers were led by senior Ryan Pacheco, Juniors CJ Apgar and Jeremy Lai, and sophomore Ben Kunze. Kunze finished as the second-best sophomore in the county in the 400m intermediate hurdles and was also a state group championship qualifier in the same event.”

ball had an up and down season. “Although we pitched great ( 2.52 ERA ) our bats were a little flat (.260 average). The pitching was led by senior Chris Fagan, sophomores Trevor Smith, Jon Peterson and freshman Frank Ciccone. The offense was led by senior Mike Ferrone, juniors Frank Marinelli, Nick Whelan, Luis Matias, Matt Tuli, John Ruccio, and sophomores Trevor Smith and Dylan O’Donnell. It was a total team effort with someone different contributing every game.”

Fagan and Ferrone exit due to graduation, but the rest of the team return in 2020. “We look forward to building on this year’s success,” says Wear.

Six Ways To Help Prevent Bullying

utting an end to bullying is everyone’s responsibility.

Whether at home, school or elsewhere, it’s important that we’re proactive.

Here are five ways that kids and parents can do their part.

1. Don’t be a bystander. It’s true that it takes a lot of courage to stand out from the crowd and defend a victim of bullying. After all, the risk is that you’ll become the next target simply for speaking up. But reporting bullying and being there for someone who needs it are actions you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life.

2. Stop sibling bullying at home.

You may think it’s harmless, but it’s not. Disdainful eye rolling, relentless teasing, humiliating taunts, hitting and verbal abuse directed at a sibling can cause depression and anxiety. Make sure your home is a safe place for everybody who lives there.

3. Enlist the help of adults. If you see a need for increased adult supervision at high-risk times and places at school or at home, ask for help from a trusted adult.

4. Get on board with an anti-bullying campaign at school. These campaigns show kids that bullying is not cool and won’t be tolerated any longer. Make an anti-bullying banner and use social media to advertise the fact that you stand up against verbal and physical violence.

5. Parents: get involved. If your child is a victim of bullying, you need to take the situation seriously. Schools, the police and child psychology experts vigorously object to the belief that bullying is a childhood rite of passage. If the problem doesn’t stop, talk to the school authorities, and then to the police if there are no further improvements. At home, be vigilant about sibling bullying, and make it stop.

6. Pay attention to cyberbullying. Those who use cell phones, internet or other devices for social media interaction open themselves up to the latest form of bullying. Parents, be aware and get involved. Teach your child proper usage of these devices and reinforce that sending any text, message or photo that is cruel, hateful or threatening is as harmful as face to face bullying. Learn about the internet and pay attention to what your child is doing online. All users should be taught cyberethics and the law to prevent cyberbullying. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be a cyberbully.

Bullying is no longer seen as a normal rite of passage for children; it’s a preventable behaviour that we can eradicate through education, awareness and action.

Jaime Galioto is the four-year Head Coach of the Hanover Park Hornets Girls softball team, who completed an 18-7 2019 season while competing in the Liberty conference.

“Last year we lost two great players, a pitcher and one of our big bats, a second basemen, so we had to go with a freshman pitcher, and we were still able to finish the season 18-7 and we got better as we went on.”

Highlight wins were over Passaic County Tech, Pompton Lakes (who were undefeated at the time), and a tough Fair Lawn squad.

Key players were Nicole Miller, a junior shortstop who also pitched, and Aryana Galioto, centerfielder who batted leadoff, who is a junior as well. “I have my whole team coming back,” says Galioto. “I lost just one senior. The nucleus is coming back.”

Miller and Galioto were 1st Team All-Conference, and sophomore Ashley Alfano, junior Dara Dimaiolo, and Victoria Lopinto were 2nd Team, and Honorable Mention was awarded to Gianna Tito.

by Colin Feeney, finished as 4-0 Dual Meet Conference Champions.

The key win during the season was defeating Kinnelon by 5 points in a dual meet to keep their undefeated record unscathed.

Christian Martin was top performer for the spring. He became NJAC Champ, Morris County Champ, Sectional Champ, and Meet of Champions Qualifier in the 110 Hurdles. Martin also won all 4 of his events at State Sectionals to score 40 points for the team.

Others who had stellar seasons were Devin Falci (Javelin), James Carlson- Zyats (Long jump/ Hurdles), Nick Graessle (Pole Vault and Javelin), Luke Brzozowski (Pole Vault), Jon Slavin (Pole Vault), Evan Yang (Javelin), Amari Johnson (Shot Put), Jack Lee (Sprints), James Troiano (1600, 3200) The Whippany Park Girls Softball team had a 17-6 final record with Head Coach Todd Callaghan at the helm.

Julia Swan, a pitcher and one of the club’s best hitters, and Lexi DiGiorgio, who had the highest team batting average, led the squad to important wins over Belvidere (1-0) and Roselle Park.

Police Unity Tour: It All Started in Florham Park

hat began as an informal bicycle ride to Washington, D.C. by a group of Morris County police officers has now evolved into the largest annual fundraiser for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and a way to bring public awareness to law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Back in May 1997, Florham Park Police Officer Patrick Montuore was a newly-minted bicycle cop and suggested a ride to the national monument to honor fallen officers, a group that includes a member of his department and a close friend.

That year, 18 officers took a four-day fundraising bicycle ride from Florham Park to Washington, D.C., raising $18,000.

Now known as the Police Unity Tour, the non-profit organization includes over a dozen chapters made up of 2,500 members from across the country and the globe who participate in the ride each year.

More than two decades later, Montuore, who retired in 2015 as Chief of the Florham Park Police Department, remains blown away by what the organization has become.

“It’s been a humbling experience and one I’ve been honored to be a part of,” he said. “One of the things I’ve learned is that you can have an idea, but it takes many for it to become a reality. There are so many people who selflessly gave to this idea to make it real.”

During the most recent trip, more than $2,700,000 was raised for the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, bringing the Police Unity Tour’s total donations to nearly $26 million over the last two decades.

Riders include officers from a variety of law enforcement agencies, ranging from municipal forces to county departments to sheriff’s offices to federal entities, he said. When participants arrive in Washington, D.C., Montuore greets each and

every officer, thanking them for making the journey.

“Being around all walks of law enforcement still wows me.

We have all these wonderful people from all over the country and world – India, Italy, England, Ireland, Australia, to name a few – and I’m wowed by the support of people and our sponsors,” he said.

“I’m also wowed by the cyclists who spend months training to get ready for May,” he said. “They are thinking of the bracelet, the picture they are carrying, the family of that officer and their fellow brothers and sisters.”

This year, the four-day Police Unity Tour, which ran from May 9 through 12, marked its 23rd anniversary, with more than 2,500 current and retired police officers biking to the nation’s capitol to pay tribute to fallen officers and the families left behind.

The fifth day includes a candlelight vigil and ceremonies at the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum.

Police Week, which is held in May to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers, “is a beautiful week,” Montuore said.

The monument, Montuore said, “is a beautiful, sacred place,” which carries the names of more than 22,000 law enforcement officers who lost their lives serving and protecting the public.

“It’s a living memorial,” he said. “We go out willingly every day knowing we could die, but we understand our role and the risks. Each year, we ride for those officers because they’d ride for us if they could.”

It’s also drawn immense support from the communities that riders pass through.

Hillsdale Police Sgt. Tom Smith, who just completed his fourth Police Unity Tour, said, “A lot of the public gets the reason for the ride – ‘We Ride For Those Who Died.’ We will

ride through towns and the streets will be lined with school children, teachers, townspeople and other police departments clapping and showing their support.”

“People know that we are riding our bikes to honor the fallen and they appreciate it, no matter where you ride through,” Smith said.

And often, it’s that support from the community and fellow officers that help riders push through what can be a grueling journey.

River Vale Police Lt. John DeVoe said this year’s ride was faced with dark and gloomy weather, conditions

that included rain and winds, but that didn’t stop riders or supporters.

“People from all walks of life came out to support us – men, women, boys and girls of all ages and backgrounds. They ran out from their homes, jumped out of their cars and came out from their workplaces as we rode by. They waved flags, clapped and gave us thumbs up,” DeVoe said.

“They encouraged us with words like ‘You’re doing great,’ ‘Keep going’ and ‘You’re almost there.’”

days and 300 miles of pedaling, we rode into the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. Among our family and friends were the family and friends of those brave men and women who gave their lives in the line of duty. They held up signs and gave us high fives and hugs. Even more remarkable, they thanked us. But in the end, it is us who should be thanking them,” he said.

Smith said, “it’s about something bigger than you.”

“A few years ago, I went to see a few coworkers ride to the Police Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C. Seeing the time that they had and the stories they came back with made me want to be part of something so special,” he said. “On July 17, 2014, Police Officer Christopher Goodell from Waldwick was killed in the line of duty. I went to high school with his sister and remember seeing him a few times throughout the years.

His death solidified my desire to do it.”

Smith believes there are many reasons the fundraiser has grown so large.

“The camaraderie, support and everyone riding for something bigger than themselves is truly something that you don’t know until you experience,” said Smith. “When you ride into the memorial, you thank God that you are wearing sunglasses because nobody will see you crying. This past year, I removed my sunglasses just before I entered the memorial because it was raining and overcast. I locked eyes with an older gentleman, who gave me a hug and thanked me profusely for riding my bike.”

“I thought to myself, all I did was ride for 300 miles. These people lost a friend or a family member to a tragedy,” Smith said. “That feeling – and that support – will keep me coming back until my body tells me that I can’t do it anymore.”

Students 2 Science Celebrates 10 Years of STEM Educating

here are many words that can be used to describe Students 2 Science, Inc., which supports and more so promotes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education, especially in underprivileged areas.

Dr. Paul Winslow, President and Co-Founder of the 501(c)(3) foundation, says “Students 2 Science (S2S) is a convener. We are here to serve as a bridge between the public and private sector. Our corporate partners unanimously are seeking a ready workforce connected to the skills and high demand careers throughout the state of New Jersey and across the country. We understand the skills needed and teach students through modern technologies, role models and experiences that bring STEM to life. Also, our corporate partners are committed to Newark students and the community through nurturing their passion for science from the first experiment to a thriving career in one of New Jersey’s many STEM companies.”

“So today is what we call our Pharma Day,” says Gary Sarkis, who is in charge of the S2S Newark Technology Learning Center, which was unveiled in May 2018. Today, he is in the Students 2 Science first home, a humble but bountiful, educational offering located at 66 Deforest Avenue in East Hanover. “Basically, what we do today is we bring the students in and they’re going to solve a problem.” The visiting students are from Mont-

clair High School, and there are seven volunteer mentors from a nearby drug company, Celgene in Summit, who along with their mentees are creating a mythical drug like an aspirin and checking its effectiveness.

There’s so much to this – all of it good. It’s all about learning and the future, and that future is nearer than we think.

The experiment thus day is called Dissolution Testing, and the object is to test whether certain medications dissolve quickly enough in the stomach to get into the blood stream. A first-time mentor, Albert Agyare, and second timer, Crystal Lee, made the trek from Celgene. “I’m looking at the future,” says Agyare, when asked what he sees when he is educating a student during an experiment. “I don’t think I was at their level at their age.” He then looks over at the students, who are eating lunch between labs and talking excitedly about their findings.

“It gives them an opportunity.”

“I think it’s good for exposure,” says Lee, stating an obvious benefit. “I mean, a lot of times when I was in high school, we did these experiments, and you kind of did them to get the results that your teacher wanted, but you didn’t see how it applied to the real world.” She also weighs in on STEM education.

“I think it helps you with problem solving in general. It teaches you how to think through a problem logically in an analytical fashion, so it doesn’t have to be STEM-related, but it can be applied to anything.”

Students 2 Science is now 10 years old, and has served

over 66,000 students and 2,000 teachers with both the “in the lab” ISAAC sessions (Improving Student Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM, for middle and high school), and in the classroom through V-Labs (Virtual Laboratory, for elementary through high school) since the nonprofit’s inception. The ISAAC program is often held onsite three times per week, while the V-Labs are held at agreeable times between the schools and the Students 2 Science Virtual Lab. V-Labs are not limited to just school classrooms, so Eric J. Neuberger, Ph.D., Senior Instructor and Educational Specialist and V-Lab presenter, is busy preparing an experiment in his lab, this one in particular for Oasis, a Boys & Girls Club in Paterson. In a few hours he’d again be live on-air. Two cameras are facing his background and worktables. He has a Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences from Rutgers University. “This is my domain,” he says, pointing around. “What we do is build different experiments – biology, chemistry, physics – and we send them out to these schools, and we create a unique link. The school will click on the link and will join, and it could be multiples schools, from anywhere. We can do one in New Jersey, one in North Carolina, both are on the screen, completely interactive, they can hear each other, and we send them instructor guides primarily for the teachers that get them to run the class for the first time with me live, and also for them to run it with their class on their own when were off.”

That’s key: the learning continues for both student and teacher after the V-Lab broadcast.

Neuberger says 99% of the time, questions avalanche with curiosity about the experiment. “They (the students) just love it.” When asked if it’s the best job he’ s ever had, he responds, “Oh, yeah.

Just for how rewarding it is. And there’s another reason, from when I was coming up and getting my degrees. When you’re going to college most of it is not hands on activities. You’re taking notes and people are lecturing to you. When I was a graduate student, when I was expected to do independent level research in a lab, most of what they teach you is when

you’re sitting in a chair and they describe to you the procedure on a board and you don’t really get to do it that day. But eight months later they’ll expect you to remember it and that’s just not the way it works. You need to get people in the lab, getting their hands dirty. Hands on is important.”

Students 2 Science to the rescue.

“Location, location, location” is key in real estate, and the initial Students 2 Science building is arguably located within the busiest business pharmaceutical and science area in the state. That means support locally. “Bayer was just here,” says Catherine “Kit” Nugent, Vice President of External Engagement. “Bayer is one of our biggest supporters. If you look at them as a sponsor, not only do they give us money, but we’ve been talking with their diversity and inclusion group on how to get more volunteers here. They’re very important. The (school) district itself, they send their middle school students here, because they believe that sending their students early makes a huge difference and so much so that their PTA has actually sponsored students to come here. The community is very much part of the work here.”

The East Hanover Technology Center that Students 2 Science operates out of East Hanover was initially owned by Teva Pharmaceuticals. “We inherited the building as is,” says Sarkis, who has been with Students 2 Science for 18 months. “Basically, the lab was set up as the lab, so there was no money to be spent in restructuring the building. So, we started developing the lab within the facilities we have.”

The founders of Students 2 Science – Dr. Winslow, Richard Meyer, Donald Truss, and Larry Fox - had a common issue: they were not able to find individuals that came with the skills they needed, and they had to set up very expensive training programs.

Over breakfast discussion, the nonprofit was born. The early days included taking over the site and recruiting schools and volunteers, many of whom had careers at Merck, Schering Plough, and other such companies who helped build the initial experiments and recruited more volunteers.

As important as the East Hanover facility is in what it has, does ,and has meant thus far to those it has benefitted, Sarkis lauds the downtown Newark location, which was unveiled in May 2018. “It’s so exciting to have a new facility,” he says. “State of the art instrumentation, everything is squeaky brand new and clean, we’re right

in the heart of Newark, and the kids are so excited when they come in. We are not a museum: we are a bunch of laboratories.

We have gas lines coming in and powering the instruments, we have like $2,000,000 of instrumentation that was donated to us that makes that facility run.” Countertops, cabinets, instrumentation was all donated, and the donators see (and down the road, may reap) the benefits of it, in addition to the students – the founders sown seed bearing fruit. “Absolutely,” says Sarkis, “because the students coming out will hopefully be their employees in the future. It’s easier to recruit locally than from all over the country.” The same activities go on in East Hanover and Newark, although in Newark the building is divided in to six separate laboratories and two virtual laboratories.

Nugent says, “One of the things that Students 2 Science does in addition to having innovative programs is to bring the advocacy for authentic STEM education because we’ve (overall education systems) have gone without it. (Science) Is very valuable, and I think the public and private sector need to be partners, 50%-50%, because without that partnership we will not have students who can enter the workforce. We’ve not been focused in that way before. It doesn’t mean that the liberal arts aren’t fantastic, they are, they’re the basis for how we learn, but also now you don’t know basic math, and you don’t have an introduction to science, you cannot understand this world or the consequences that we suffer at this time. Science is the solution.”

Per Nugent, STEM is one of the lower funded educational realms in urban areas. That’s where Students 2 Science comes in, serving as advocates for science exploration.

Although encouraged to build another facility – and Dr. Winslow by 2029 would like to see another 3 to 5 sites built

- Students 2 Science encourages involvement in the V-Labs program, which gets students exposed to science as early as elementary school. Yes, the virtual classroom can serve New Jersey, but has educated classrooms beyond Garden State borders and can even go abroad. “The centers offer an opportunity to be a community center if you will, a shared resource among students which is phenomenal, but there’s a cost associated with it,” says Nugent. “The instrumentation is worth millions of dollars, and relationships to the maintenance and the technical assistance and training for our staff, so there’s infrastructure, staff, and the bricks and mortar component. But the Virtual Laboratory, in fact if we could, we’re starting to put together a state plan. If we could, we would have a V-Lab studio in every county in the state, and it would provide us with the opportunity to bring the virtual laboratory there. So, the V-Lab is a line to the next generation science standards, which is a compliance issue for the state, and we start in the fifth grade, because we believe you have to start early.”

Sarkis is working on refining the pilot, which is integrated with his team with the Newark Public School system. “It’s not just all of the infrastructure and buildings. It’s about having the right people, scientists who are working with the students, and we need to have the corporate sponsors who could expand, and we want to maintain the integrity of the program.”

Lavinthal Wins NCJW Essex Service to Section Award

L

eslie Lavinthal of Florham Park, was the recipient of the NCJW/Essex Service to Section Award, recognized as a member of NCJW/Essex whose generosity and resolute work as a volunteer has changed the lives of women, children and families. Lavinthal has been a steadfast and productive member of NCJW/Essex for 45 years. Initially drawn to the organization because she was new to her neighborhood, she found the women to be intelligent and committed to community service. She has held multiple leadership positions including Co-Chair of the Back 2 School Store, Vice President of the Center for Women, and currently Assistant Treasurer. She has loved the hands-on opportunities, such as helping women at the Career Closet. With her training as a special education teacher, she has especially enjoyed helping children attending the Back 2 School Store and supporting young children who have suffered losses through the peer support group, Rainbows.

The Changemakers: It Runs in the Family for Florham Park New Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Steven Caponegro and New Hanover Park Regional District Superintendent, Maria Carrell

By Jillian Risberg hey admire each other’s leadership success as only family can. That’s because Dr. Steven Caponegro and Maria Carrell were academically driven growing up, often competing against each other as many loving siblings do.

“Our parents instilled in us family values and a strong work ethic that we now instill with our children,” Caponegro says. “This is as much a milestone and celebration for our parents, as it is for us.”

The brother and sister worked their way up the ranks of the local school systems for years and couldn’t be happier to share this journey together. He is Florham Park’s new superintendent of schools and Carrell was recently named Hanover Park regional district superintendent.

“I am excited about the opportunity of continuing my career in the Florham Park Schools and working with a wonderful staff, BOE, PTA, parents and community,” says Caponegro. “It is an incredibly humbling and exciting moment in my educational career.”

And Carrell echoed that sentiment.

“I feel privileged and honored to be selected to lead the Hanover Park Regional High School District,” she says. “I would like to thank the Board of Education for appointing me, and I look forward to working with the students, staff, parents and communities as we implement a shared vision of excellence related to the District's Educational Plan.”

Carrell assumes the superintendent position from Carol Grossi, who retired from the school system after a 45-year career in New Jersey education.

It takes hard work and dedication to get to this level and Caponegro says he is fortunate to have had a multitude of experiences that have prepared him for this challenging role.

“Such as being a middle school ELA/social studies teacher, activities director, coach, curriculum supervisor of special services, director of special services, principal, and adjunct professor at Drew University, College of St. Elizabeth, Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Alternate Route Teacher Program Coordinator at the Morris-Union Jointure,” he says. “Most importantly, building strong and valuable relationships with varying stakeholders and always continue to grow and learn as an educator.”

Carrell, on the other hand began her career as a chemistry and physics teacher at Summit High School and was then promoted to assistant principal for six years. She went on to assume the role of Director of curriculum, instruction & assessment for the Hanover Park Regional High School District for the past eleven years prior to being appointed superintendent.

According to the siblings, for both of them to be stepping into this role simultaneously is a wonderful opportunity for increased

collaboration and articulation between the districts.

“This is a moment that we will always remember and cherish, especially since we started our superintendency at the same time and now work alongside each other as a feeder district to the regional district,” they both say.

Brian Silkensen, supervisor of curriculum and instruction for the Florham Park School District has worked with Caponegro for 17 years in Florham Park and five years with Carrell through their local curriculum consortium.

“Which is Hanover Park, East Hanover, Hanover Township, Morris Plains and Florham Park,” Silkensen says. “If we look at trends and see that there’s a need — when we meet with the local districts we look at that data and then our programs, and talk about different ways we can work together to address those needs.”

In “Students to Science” the five districts joined together and did virtual labs with other schools and it was a scientist who led it from their laboratory.

“So we’ve done a lot of collaboration, working together creating articulation between the middle school teachers and the high school teachers and Maria was really the lead on organizing,” Silkensen says. “She’s always been collaborative and wants to include all the sending districts in the discussions.”

According to the curriculum supervisor, when he thinks of the two superintendents the statement that comes to mind is, ”Whatever it takes."

“All conversations stem from what is best for the students and how can we support the teachers to meet the needs of the students,” the curriculum supervisor says. “They both put a priority on being actively involved with the students during the school day and evening events.”

Caponegro graduated Drew University, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and political sci-

ence. He also has a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Master of Arts in educational administration (M.Ed.) from Caldwell College, and a Doctorate of Letters (D.Litt.) from Drew.

And taking the reins as superintendent of Florham Park schools seemed like a natural progression since it’s where he spent his entire career.

He entered the district in 2002 as an English-language arts and social studies teacher at Ridgedale Middle School, where he coached softball, wrestling, and soccer. In addition, he served as the Activities Director at RMS, a role that focused on managing school activities, scheduling and disciplinary matters.

Silkensen first met Caponegro at RMS when they worked side by side as social studies teachers, the superintendent with the seventh grade and the curriculum supervisor with the sixth grade.

The siblings are also active volunteers for Halos for Angels and the NJ Coalition 4 Education & Positive Choices (NJC4EPC) The superintendent had a kismet moment all those years ago when he just knew he wanted to be an educator.

“Oddly, it was shortly after I attended St. John’s Law School,” Caponegro says. “I tutored several students the summer prior and fortunately ‘caught’ the teaching bug.”

Getting to do this everyday — devoting their lives to the minds of tomorrow means everything.

of the most rewarding experiences since you are not only impacting the life and future of a child, but impacting the future of our community,” the siblings say.

Silkensen says he can visually see the superintendents excitement and pride when they talk about the students and teachers.

“It is an honor to work with such compassionate and dedicated educators,” the curriculum supervisor says.

According to the siblings, there is so much to look forward to with this new appointment: collaborating with the parents, community members, PTA, BOE, staff and various other stakeholders.

“Building strong relationships and increased communication is a vital component to being a successful educational and servant leader,” Caponegro says.

“Continuing to improve upon the strong programs already established within the district.”

Carrell holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Albright College, and Ed.M. in educational administration & supervision from Rutgers. The superintendent is also a proud graduate of Hanover Park High School.

She discovered her calling in college.

“I loved the sciences, but knew that I wanted to help others,” Carrell says. "After taking my first education class, I knew that is what I wanted to do.”

Absorbing the gravity of her new position, the superintendent can’t wait to engage with everyone.

“I am looking forward to working with the students, staff, parents, Board of Education members and various other stakeholders in the community to continue to expand and grow upon the successful programs already inherent within the district,” Carrell says.

Silkensen sees a pair of educators that are completely dedicated to giving it their all and both have been active participants.

“They’re not ones who view it as just the school day’s over and then they go home,” the curriculum supervisor says.

“They are always available — anytime that I’ve reached out; if it’s in the evening or even the weekend they always get back right away and they always talk about going to the student events; whether it’s a game or the bands or a play, they are al-

ways there to support the students.”

According to Silkensen, when it comes to Carrell she always wants to connect and get one’s perspective on things.

“If she’s noticing something she’ll reach out to us and it’s always in a genuine way, not like ‘I got you,’” he says. “It’s ‘let’s work together,’ she’s a constant collaborator that wants to do best for the students.”

Of Caponegro, he says the new Florham Park superintendent has a wealth of knowledge.

“He was a teacher, he was a curriculum supervisor of special services and director of special services, a principal and now superintendent, so I can always go to him and know that I’m going to get sound advice.”

And Silkensen says Caponegro is always welcoming, which not everyone can say about their manager in any industry.

“I don’t have to fear going to him that he’s gonna say, ‘I’m too busy,’” says the curriculum supervisor. “He’s somebody that if somebody’s in need, he’s always there and always wants to help. He’ll drop what he’s doing so that he can address the needs.”
