Satisfied Like After Eating A Thanksgiving Meal, One Local Resident Welcomes All To Annual Community Dinner

By Elsie Walker ears ago around Thanksgiving, while Hackettstown resident Anita Rodriguez was working at a local pub, some regulars, who were single, brought in some turkeys they had received from their employer. Not needing them or knowing what to do with them, they gave the turkeys to Rodriguez and asked her to give them to somebody who could use them. Rodriguez knew of no one at the time, but got an idea. With little time for upfront publicity and some donations of things like stuffing, Rodriguez put together a free Thanksgiving Dinner and invited those who were down on their luck or who would otherwise be alone on the holiday, to come. Ten people showed up that year. Rodriguez realized

that if 10 people show up with such little publicity, “there have to be more people out there” who could use such a meal. For the past 14 years, Rodriquez has coordinated a free Thanksgiving Dinner in restaurant atmosphere, including guitar music entertainment. Here people can feel free to come and join others in celebrating the day. For those who want the meal, but rather not stay, they can takeout meals. Actually, Rodriguez notes that she encourages even those who sit down for a meal to take home a meal for later in the day. Over the years she’s done the community dinner, she estimates they’ve served 2,800 – 3,000 meals. About 30 volunteers help on-site while about 12 others help beforehand, being “runners,” picking up items. This year, Rodriguez expects about 180 people to the sit-

down dinner and 75-80 takeout dinners. The dinner will be held at Marley’s Gothom Grill in Hackettstown from noon to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Rodriguez noted her thanks to the grill’s manager, JoAnn Donaldson and owner Bruno Pascale for letting her use that venue.

In the beginning, Rodriguez paid for the dinners herself, scrimping and saving money during the year to pay for the event. Then organizations reached out to help such as the Kiwanis and Hackettstown Rotary. A member of the Rotary who has also volunteered at continued on page 6

tatistics show that 70% of current smokers actually want to quit smoking, but find it too difficult. In fact, millions of these people try to quit smoking every year, but several do not succeed. These substances can increase acidity in the body making withdrawal symptoms worse. - Increase fruits and veggies! Area Churches Pool Their Talents To Share The Nativity Story

he nativity is the story of a child of promise born into a divided world looking for hope. That story will be shared through the various talents of area churches during the 15th annual Christmas Arts program held set to be held Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. at the Port Morris United Methodist Church in Landing. A freewill offering will be taken for a local charity. A time of hospitality will be held in the church’s fellowship hall after the program. Roxbury resident, Elsie Walker who coordinates and writes the program, noted that “Two things, I think, make our program unique. One is that the scenes of the story are told in various ways: liturgical dance, puppetry, chancel drama/comedy, song, instrumental music, and sign language. The participating churches pool their talents to tell the story. The other thing is that

we tell the story from a different perspective each year. It is the same story, but looking at it through different ‘eyes’. This year it is from the perspective that people were looking for a savior, a king in the traditional sense. However, what they got was a baby, a child who would fulfill God’s promise.” This year, sharing their talents are people from St. James Episcopal Church in Hackettstown; Abiding Peace Lutheran Church in Budd Lake; St. Margaret’s of Scotland in Morristown; St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Netcong; and the host church. Walker noted that there may still be another church or two joining in. Pam Laura, director of St. James’ children’s singing and signing choir, shared, “It’s a wonderful way to experience the nativity story. Different denominations all share this

the dinners is Kevin Guyette of Mt. Arlington. Guyette will be on hand again this year. Guyette noted that no reservation is needed for the meal. She also noted that Rodriguez is “always prepared for a crowd.” Guyette went on to say, “[the dinner] is growing and growing year after year and I’m so pleased to be involved in it.” Volunteers, which Guyette says include members of Rodriguez’s family, not only help with serving and the other chores needed, but mingle with those there. Guyette noted that there are many alone on the holiday and this gives them a place to go and feel a part of a holiday celebration. The meal is setup as a sit-

down dinner with menu. It is done so well that some people don’t realize what they’ve walked into. Guyette and Rodriguez shared the story of a family that was looking for a restaurant open on Thanksgiving Day, saw one, were seated and given a menu. At the end, they asked for the bill. They were told that there was none. They had walked into the annual community Thanksgiving Dinner. When asked how she feels about this dinner which has grown so much, Rodriguez said, “satisfied.” She explained that when she does the dinner she feels, “my mission in life for that day is complete.” For more information call Anita at 908-674-5595.

She was just 12 years old. After Margaret had been initially diagnosed, the community rallied around her and started a fundraising organization to help her. She had told her mother, Donna Walling that her dream was to use that organization in the future to help others as she had been helped. That is what Smiles For Margaret does. Though it has other fundraising efforts, the 5K Huff and Puff After You Stuff is its biggest fundraiser. Donna Walling noted that it raised more than $13,000 last year. This year, Walling said they expect approximately 300 people to participate. The course

can be done by individuals or teams made of family, friends or co-workers. In addition to doing the course, the event includes a DJ, awards, and prizes. While this is the biggest fundraiser for Smiles for Margaret, there are other ways to help the organization during the year. As Halloween Creeps Away, Chill Sets In With NJ Brothers’ Scary Christmas Film

By Stefanie Sears hristmas is getting a chiller treatment with “Killer Christmas,” an upcoming independent feature film written, directed, and produced by Shaker Productions, a new filmmaking company co-founded by Englewood Cliffs brothers PeterPaul and Tony Shaker. The pair acts in the movie as well. PeterPaul Shaker- a former lawyer who obtained some screenwriting experience in Los Angeles and has been writing since 2007 while living in New York, portrays Rudolph. Tony Shaker, who quit his software developer job to focus solely on the film, plays one of the main characters, Robbie. The film also stars Malcolm Xavier, Freya Lund, Matt Maretz, Natalie Pavelek and Kourtney Kelly. And yes, it is a – ahem – “killer.” The film, which took nine days to shoot, follows a mischievous bunch of former college chums and two new roommates when they visit a Christmas tree lot to find the perfect tree. The lot neighbors a spooky abandoned hotel. When they realize that

they stayed way past the closing hours of the lot, the gang, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, decides to explore the creepiness of said hotel as one of their daring games. Kelly’s character Bella automatically and throughout counts it as a bad idea but reluctantly joins them. After much built up suspension, they discover that they are not alone in the hotel when a crazed man in a Santa Claus mask starts killing them off one by one with a machete. The friends then find themselves on a race for their lives to escape the numerous filthy and graffiti-adorned rooms and hallways of the hotel in order to survive against their masked adversary. The Shakers’ own trip to a Christmas tree farm run by Benedictine monks on Thanksgiving weekend 2016 inspired the “Killer Santa” antagonist. Finding the idea of a hidden, masked murderous monk a good unforeseen villain and inspired by the random clown sightings of 2016, they eventually looked into Christmas clown masks and found the Santa clown mask online. This led to the rest of the charac-

arren County Community Singers kick off their 25th year with their annual Winterfest of Music on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 3, at 3 p.m. The Saturday concert is at Grace Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, and the Sunday concert is at the long-time concert venue of the Singers, the First Presbyterian Church, Washington. The children’s chorus is under the direction of Mariah Adams, and the children’s accompanist is Laura Rader. The Community Singers are a non-audition group made up of about 60 singers from high school age to senior citizens. They come from all over the county and beyond. The new semester starts in early January. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington. The concert is free, but a good-will offering will be taken. Part of that money will be used toward the annual Warren County music scholarship. The singers are funded in part through the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

According to the brothers, finding such location was the most difficult aspect of the filmmaking process. The Adler Hotel of Sharon Springs, New York, was in business from the 1920s to the early 2000s when it went bankrupt and eventually fell into disrepair. Throughout recent years the vacant

building has fallen victim to vandalism and the results of such can now be seen in the movie. “Killer Christmas” follows the growing popular trend of Christmas horror hybrid films. Others in this category include “Krampus” (2015); “Black Christmas” (2006); and of course the much tamer children 90s classic, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993). “That was very purposeful because we love Halloween and there hasn’t really been an epic Christmas one that’s been done,” says PeterPaul Shaker. “We real-

ly loved the concept of this Killer Santa type person. We thought that Christmas horror films are underrepresented. There needs to be more of them. It’s a good, fun season. Vietnam Memorial – The Wall That Heals

Holden he Vietnam Memorial (The Wall), in Washington, D.C., stands as a symbol of America’s honor and recognition of the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. Three million Americans served during the war and inscribed on the 10-foot high black granite walls are the names of more than 58,200 men and women who gave their lives or remain missing; more than the Korean, War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War combined. The Memorial was dedicated on Nov. 13, 1982, 35 years ago, and attracts more than 5.6 million visitors each year. On The Wall, there are 1,487 names of New Jersey men and one N.J. woman, Capt. Eleanor Grace Alexander, of Westwood. But, the passing years are making it harder to remember their names. They came from almost every county and from towns such as Budd Lake, Morristown, Caldwell, Wayne,

Short Hills and Long Valley. The war touched thousands of N.J. families, and every Veteran’s Day they remember a husband, wife, uncle, brother, sister, a loved one or an old friend. The Wall insures that their names will not be forgotten and will be etched in stone forever. The Wall often brings closure to those who knew a name on the wall, and to some survivors, the thought of how blessed they are. “The number of names was and remains incomprehensible,” says Army veteran Rich Reck of Randolph. “I felt and still feel a deep sense of gratitude for their and their families’ sacrifices. As a fellow veteran, I realize it was by the grace of God that my name isn’t on that Wall.” Jan Scruggs, a Purple Heart Vietnam veteran, created the vision of the memorial. “It would help veterans heal,” he said. “Its mere existence would be societal recognition that their sacrifices were honorable rather than dishon-

Our country needed something symbolic to help heal our wounds.” Vietnam Memorial Wall designer Maya Lin, was a 21-year-old Yale student when her proposal for the black stone monument won the largest design competition in American history. Chocolate Shoppe Reopens Sweet New Beginnings In Long Valley

By Jane Primerano new store in Long Valley is the happy ending to a story that began with an explosion in a propane tank in Mendham last winter. The propane tank in a garbage truck exploded in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016. Fire swept through Country Coffee Shop and Village Pizza and smoke and water damage destroyed the inventory in The Chocolate Shoppe as well as damaging a restaurant in the same strip mall. There were no injuries in the fire. The Mendham emergency services were assisted by a number of mutual aid organizations. Owners Darleen Wizoek and her daughter, Emily Oldmixon, started looking for a new location and found one close to their Long Valley homes. The new store on Route 24 was

scheduled to open on Nov. 14. Because the new store is close to the Chocolate Shoppe’s original location, on Washington Avenue in Washington, Wizoek and Oldmixon closed that store after Halloween. Wizoek started working in that shop in 2005 after working at Mangel’s in Chester since 2000s. Mangel’s was sold in 2005. Oldmixon worked there for a while but then entered into business with her mother. The Washington store was opened in 1980 and bought by Wizoek family from founder Phyllis Blake in 2006. It was known by local teenage boys as the perfect location for Sweet 16 presents because it not only featured chocolates but also stuffed animals. Oldmixon said they are not planning to continue selling the stuffed critters although they will have some for sale that were ordered before

the Washington store closed. Long Valley is exactly halfway between the two previous locations. “Having two locations was very tough given we are seasonal and a family business,” Oldmixon said.

narrow. “We do not plan to make many changes,” Oldmixon said. “We want to keep our same recipes that were used in Mangel’s and The Chocolate Shoppe, maybe create

some new ones, too.” The Chocolate Shoppe is truly a family business. Besides the mother-daughter team, other year-round employees are Oldmixon’s sister, Jes Wizorek, family friend Anita Stec, cousin Lexie Ackerman and another family friend and baker Jack Dempsey. During busy seasons, Darlene Wizoek’s husband, Mike, and Emily’s other siblings, Dan Wizorek and Erin Carrajet along with her family help out. Darleen’s sisters, Carol Ackerman and Pam Meling also work during busy times. Oldmixon said the big sellers are homemade caramel and buttercrunch as well as hand-dipped chocolate-covered potato chips, hand-panned chocolate covered cherries and the various handmolded chocolate figures, some of which are seasonal. For the soft opening on Tuesday, Nov. 14, Oldmixon said they were planning to give away some of the popular little treats such as the homemade caramels, chocolate-covered potato chips and, in honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, hand molded chocolate turkeys.

Lightly butter baking sheet.

In medium mixing bowl, beat egg whites with electric mixer at high speed until foamy. Gradually add 3 tablespoons sugar substitute and continue mixing until soft peaks form. Spoon onto prepared baking sheet and spread with spatula to 1/4-inch thickness. Bake 35 minutes. Turn oven off; let meringue stand in oven 45 minutes. Crush meringue and place in bowl. Add pecans and toss gently to combine. Set aside. While meringue is resting, place sweet potatoes in medium saucepan. Cover with water to 2 inches above potatoes and bring to boil. Cook until tender, about 20 minutes, and drain. Return saucepan to medium-high heat. Add potatoes, butter, cream, remaining sugar substitute, salt, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin puree. Stir to combine.

Mash with potato masher until smooth. Heat through, about 1 minute. Transfer potato mixture to serving dish and cover with meringue topping. Salted Caramel Cheesecake Bites Recipe courtesy of “Atkins: Eat Right, Not Less” Prep time: 10 minutes Total time: 1 hour, 10 minutes Servings: 18 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/3 cup plain protein powder 2 tablespoons stevia 6 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 1/3 cup chopped almonds or macadamia nuts 1 tablespoon sugar-free caramel syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum (optional) 1/4 teaspoon sea salt or sea salt flakes

In large mixing bowl, combine heavy cream with protein powder and stevia. Whisk until smooth. Add cream cheese, almonds or macadamia nuts, caramel syrup and vanilla extract; blend until smooth. If cream cheese clumps slightly, mix with rubber spatula, breaking up bits of cream cheese against side of bowl. Sprinkle mixture with xanthan gum, if desired, and mix about 30 seconds. Mixture will thicken slightly. Cover tray that will fit into freezer with sheet of wax paper. Using soup spoon, scoop mixture onto tray, making 18 mounds. Alternatively, use two silicone candy molds or empty ice cube tray coated with olive oil spray and press cheesecake mixture into 18 molds. Sprinkle with sea salt. Freeze at least one hour before serving.

Cinderella: A Holiday Musical Premieres At The Growing Stage

he Growing Stage, The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey, located in the Historic Palace Theatre in Netcong will celebrate the holidays with Cinderella: A Holiday Musical from Nov. 24 through Dec. 17 with performances Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday matinees at 4 p.m. A musical by Alyn Cardarelli and Steve Goers, Cinderella: A Holiday Musical, was originally produced in 2003 by Emerald City Theatre in Chicago, Ill. This production is under the direction of Lori B. Lawrence, The Growing Stage’s director of Educational Programming with choreography by Jillian Petrie and musical direction by Stephen Fox.
