By: J.L. Shively reystone Park Psychiatric Hospital stood for more than 100 years and had become a wellknown, if not imposing sight in Morris Plains, until its demolition in 2015. Despite the loss of this building, Greystone’s memory has lived on and has even become a source of inspiration for the many people who rallied around it. This memory has not only inspired continued discussion on the topic of Greystone and medicine but has given strength to the preservation efforts of similar structures. The current exhibit at Acorn

Hall, “The Cutting Edge: Medicine in Morris County 1876–1976,” is an example of this inspiration. This exhibit ties in with the 125th anniversary of the Morristown

Medical Center and “pays tribute to the medical history in Morris County,” states Exhibit Curator Kim Smith. This exhibit is planned to be on display until June 3, says

Shakespeare Theatre To Launch Season With Gala

he Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Florham Park launches its 56th season with its 2018 Annual Gala on Saturday, April 7, and will present its rarely bestowed Mighty Quill Award to longtime Board member Richard B. McGlynn at the annual event. Performers have yet to be announced. The gala is the theater’s largest fundraising event of the year, and welcomes guests to its behind-the-scenes theatre factory for the festivities. Discover Books And So Much Inside Thomas Edison’s Library

By Steve Sears hen visiting the Thomas Edison National Historic Site in West Orange, one may “find” Thomas Edison himself inside his three-story library, which doubled as his office and research center in Building #5. Theresa Jung, assistant superintendent at the site, explains, “It is rare to find a site that still has, not only the historic buildings but also the original furnishings that were in those rooms. It almost looks like Thomas Edison might walk around the corner and join the tour.” Both Edison and his staff used the library regularly for 44 years. Usually the first room a visitor sees when they enter the main laboratory building, there’s too much to absorb during one visit. On the shelves are books and journals from around the world on scientific and technical topics, and on display are artifacts that will keep those with varied interests busy during a self-guided tour. About 10,000 books populate the library, and as far as Jung knows, there is evidence that they used something like the Dewey Decimal System to keep books in order. And if that first number boggles the mind,

consider this about the entirety of the Thomas Edison National Historic Site: there are 400,000 artifacts in the museum collection and five million documents in the archives; not all are on display; many are preserved in storage areas. A few noteworthy things, among so many, wife Mina Edison sent a cot from their nearby Glenmont home in Llewelyn Park for her husband to nap on since he often worked many hours. It’s nestled between a set of bookshelves. Near the library’s third floor, a huge clock read 3:26, the hour and minute hands ceasing movement when Edison breathed his last at age 84 on Oct. 18, 1931. No explanation for the mysterious clock stoppage has ever been found. Hanging on shelving near the entrance are the pictures of the five United States Presidents in office during a good portion of the years the plant was in operation: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. It is not known if a president ever visited while in office, but the site has photographs of Franklin D. Roosevelt circa 1920 and Herbert Hoover from 1928 visiting the West Orange laboratory, perhaps during

Florham Park Middle School Broadcasts Live Morning Announcements

Those at Ridgedale Middle School in Florham Park are sparking creativity in their mornings before their day even starts, by live broadcasting of their morning announcements. Everyone who has ever been to school can relate to beginning the day by listening to morning announcements. While the information may be important and germane, they can often be dry, dull, and about as interesting as reciting a multiplication table. But now this innovative program at Ridgedale Middle School has changed that. Instead of half listening to that drone, students can now be entertained and engaged with a live broadcast of their school information. According to Ridgedale AL PROFESSIOTN CARPE CLEANING

Teacher and Facilitator, Nick Esposito, this inventive program has blossomed over the past two years. The announcements have transformed from audio only, simple announcements into a wonderful creative show. Ridgedale’s live announcements have been going on since October and will continue until the end of the year. Approximately 25 students from all different disciplines are divided among three classes, and give their energy and talents to this production. These energetic and creative students essentially run all aspects of the production down to the last detail. As Esposito explains, “Since the announcements run live every morning, the students have a 40 minute class period to prepare the day before, and they get right to work. During this period, students write, edit and practice their script for the

following morning. While this is happening, another group works on setting up the lights, the camera and the editing software we use for our live broadcasts. They then come together and then practice a couple of times before going live in the morning. They run

Another facet of the morning announcements is involving and engaging the rest of the student body. Esposito mentions the “Mystery Person of the Morning” segment in particular. He describes this as a kind of guessing game where they provide clues as to a person’s identity, without seeing their face, and announce it at the end of the credits. “It has been great,” Esposito says. “Students and staff tune in on a regular basis when they realize it’s live. Students all want to be a part of it as well, so it’s really supporting us trying to build a positive school culture. “ As an added bonus, the live announcements are a perfect vehicle for the students to get

valuable hands-on experience in the communications field. “It’s amazing to give the students the opportunity to experience a real world setting at such a young age,” Esposito tells. “They are in the driver’s seat: sink or swim, it’s on them. My role as facilitator is to let them experience what it’s like when they come together to work as a team.” When asked what his favorite thing about the announcements is, Esposito says, “I’m proud of how well they work together, how professional they are with it, and how creative they are. I really enjoy seeing the students having fun with the announcements. Reading the news accurately is great and important, but to see their personalities come out, having them joke with one another and make it entertaining is not only great for the school when they watch, but enjoyable for them as well.”

rie’s Wardy Forty: Greystone Park State Hospital Revisited,” which is set for Sun., March 24 at 2 p.m. at Acorn Hall. The last of these programs is the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum bus trip, which is set for Thurs., April 12 to Sat., April 14. The first lecture held in collaboration with this exhibit was given by Rusty Tagliareni and Christina Mathews, co-authors of the Images of America book “Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital,” which chronicles not only the original history of Greystone, but also the preservation efforts and the final demolition of the building. Tagliareni and Mathews also created and maintain the website entitled Antiquity Echoes, which archives the many abandoned locations they visit. “Abandoned buildings are temporary,” explained Tagliareni at the first of these lectures, “and we don’t greatly like these buildings being abandoned.” This lecture was the first of a two-part presentation held by Tagliareni and Mathews entitled “Greystone’s Legacy.” The second of these discussions was set to be held on March 11 at the time of this article. “These buildings are extensions of the community itself,” Tagliareni expressed at this dis-

cussion, explaining the drive behind a desire to save them. Greystone itself was designed by architect Thomas Kirkbride and first opened its doors in 1876. It was one of the last of an estimated 15 Kirkbride structures remaining in the U.S. and was heralded as the largest, single foundation building in the world until the construction of the Pentagon. It is largely the fascination with the architecture, which is not likely to be seen again, that rallied groups around saving the structure and rallies them still in an effort to continue to preserve the past. It is this message that Tagliareni and Mathews express in their discussions of Greystone and their ongoing efforts to save similar abandoned places. After the demolition of Greystone, the group Preserve Greystone did not so much dissolve but become something new. The group gave it’s 501c3 status to the emerging group, Preservation Works. The president of Preservation Works, Christian J. VanAntwerpen, describes the rise of the group and his involvement in it as an “interesting journey,” which he states began with watching an episode of the show “House M.D.” which

Utilizing what was learned after the demolition of Greystone, the group helps to advocate the reconstruction and repurposing of buildings which have an “architecturally beautiful concept,” states VanAntwerpen. A memorial to the Greystone structure is planned to be raised on the original site of the main building. This memorial, Tagliareni states, is planned to be constructed with the 180 pieces of the original façade that was saved before the building’s demolition. Tagliareni notes that the possibility of this memorial was made possible by the quick thinking of concerned Kirkbride enthusiast, Robert Duffy, and the generous efforts of the group, Northstar, which was in charge of demolishing the building. Taliareni explains that Northstar donated all the

materials needed to remove the façade, as well as an entire day in which to complete the work. Currently these materials are warehoused in a safe location, where they have been inventoried to aide with the effort to generate a concept for the memorial design. A completion date is not yet set as groups involved work through structural details. Atlantic Ambulance Presents Child Safety Seat Inspection Events

By Kerry Breen n February 22, Atlantic Ambulance paired with Safe Kids Worldwide for a free, publicly-available car seat inspection. The program, known as Buckle Up, focuses on safety in and around cars. According to Sarah Daplyn, an Atlantic Training Center coordinator, these events are held several times throughout the year in various locations. The event included certified child passenger safety technicians on-site, who were able to help parents properly install their children’s car seats. “We typically hold our inspection events once every other month at the Atlantic Ambulance Air One helicopter base located at 65 Love Lane in Netcong, NJ,” said Daplyn. “Safe Kids holds these types of events all the time in various locations throughout the state.” According to a flyer advertising the event, three out of four car seats are not used correctly. According to the Safe Kids Worldwide website, one million children around the world die of unintentional injuries each year, and millions more are injured; car safety is the greatest cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children

both nationally and globally. “Our sponsored programs and initiatives combine education, awareness, environmental changes, and safety device distribution to get communities more involved in child safety and keep families and children safer,” as state on the site. “We work together with communities in the United States and partners around the world to implement programs that will address the leading causes of injury and injury-related death.” According to the website, similar child car seat events are held throughout the country, not just within the state of New Jersey. Most of the events are open to the public, and can be found in locations such as General Motors dealerships, hospitals, community centers and shopping centers. The Safe Kids company also has more than 125 Mobile Car Seat Checkup Vans operating across the United States. These vans are designed to turn “any parking lot into a full-service child restraint safety event site,” and almost every state has at least one van operating. Throughout the United States, 500 permanent child passenger safety inspection

stations are operated, with regular times and dates available for interested parents and caregivers. Since the Buckle Up program was established in 1997 during a partnership with General Motors Foundation, the program has grown to include four main components. The components included child passenger safety, which addresses car seats, booster seats and seat belts; heatstroke awareness and prevention with a campaign called Never Leave Your Child Alone in a Car; public education on driveway and parking lot injuries known as “frontovers” and “backovers,” which includes another program called Spot the Tot; and “Getting Ready to Drive,” which covers passenger education for preteens and teens before they drive and includes a program called Countdown2Drive, which teaches preteen and young teens about safe driving before they get behind the wheel. The program also works as public policy advocates helping states strengthen their laws regarding child safety in vehicles and drunk driving.

Adults With Asperger’s Invited To Join Social Group For Monthly Gatherings

By Cheryl Conway t is not always easy to connect with people socially after one graduates from college but by getting involved with a nearby social group, adults with Asperger Syndrome can make new friends and socialize. In its fifth year, The Asperger’s Adult Social Group of N.J., has grown to about 25 members who meet once monthly to participate in a planned activity. Members are seeking even more adults to get involved and join in on the fun. “Our current members have asked that we continue to grow, so I am spreading the word,” says Debra Burke of Budd Lake, founder of the The Asperger’s Adult Social Group of N.J. “It’s a good core group; hoping to get more members.” Established in October 2013, Burke and her 34 year old daughter, Jaclyn, had discussed how great it would be to have a social support group for adults with Aspergers “since we hadn’t heard of anything like that in our part of N.J.,” says Burke. “Since then connections have grown, new friendships have been made, and it’s truly a wonderful thing.” While “there’s a lot of support for children with Asperger’s, once they get out of college there’s not enough outlets,” she says. Jaclyn, who graduated from Mt. Olive High School and attended County College of Morris in Randolph, was 31 when they began the group. “I just felt there was a need for adults with Asperger’s to have a social outlet,” says Burke. Other adults were ask-

ing for such a group as well, she says. The Burkes went to a meeting in Morristown but it turned out to be more of a support group. She and a couple of parents agreed they wanted more of a social group for their kids. Intimidated at first, she admits, to begin such a program, Burke attended a workshop held at Saint Claire’s Hospital in Denville to learn how she could start such a group. “I knew I could do that; I can throw a party,” she says. So she decided to organize an event once a month, varying days of the week held. Members meet once a month at different types of social get togethers such as dinner at an Italian restaurant, Hibachi, bowling nights, summer barbecue, swimming party, pizza and dessert party. Future events include impov nights, pottery classes, wine and painting and movie nights. “They are good to come alone,” says Burke, “it just works.” Current members consist of men and women, 18 years old though the late 40’s from Morris, Warren, Somerset and Sussex counties as well as New Hope, Pa. Asperger Syndrome is considered a very high functioning autism. Affected children and adults can have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and/or repetitive behaviors. Of the members, Burke says, “it’s an amazing, positive group of people. It’s grown into a community of people; the friendships,” not only for the members but for their families, as well, “having a sense of

community to share the friendships. It’s evolved so much.” The next function on the group’s calendar was to attend a Paint and Wine event on March 11. Events usually last for two hours, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

CCM Announces Plans For Engineering And Manufacturing Facility

ounty College of Morris in Randolph will be meeting the demand to expand several popular academic areas and offer local businesses greater support in addressing their need for skilled employees through the construction of a $10 million Engineering and Manufacturing building. The 30,000 square foot building will be constructed on the college’s Randolph campus. Construction of the building will also allow the college to double the space used by its health science programs, allowing for the addition of a state-of-the art virtual hospital and new health programs to meet area employment needs. Funding for construction of the Engineering and Manufacturing building has been provided by the state, the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders and private donors.

The college hopes to break ground on the new building by early fall. A total of $350,000 has been donated to the CCM Foundation to expand the facilities for the health science programs. “We are deeply grateful for the funding that has been provided so CCM can both address the need to expand its engineering, manufacturing and health science programs and respond to the workforce demand of regional manufactures and healthcare organizations,” said Dr. Anthony J. Iacono, CCM president. “Preparing our students for the modern workplace, to provide them with skills and training and technology required by employers in Morris County is vital to the health of our businesses community and the county’s long-term economy,‘’ said Freeholder Thomas

Mastrangelo, the county governing board’s liaison to CCM and economic development. “The new center also will offer important re-training opportunities for the county’s current workforce, to meet the demands of our business community, and give our students and re-trained workers a step-up towards employment.’’ Plans for the new facilities were developed following a series of roundtable meetings last year with engineering, manufacturing and healthcare facilities, along with the Freeholders, the Morris County Economic Development Corporation and the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, regarding workforce needs and enrollment growth.

The Mechanical Engineering Technology and Engineering Science programs at CCM have experienced significant growth in enrollment in recent years. Since 2012, there has been a 68 percent increase in students studying Mechanical Engineering and a 14 percent increase in Engineering Science. The Engineering and Manufacturing building will house those programs and also will allow for the establishment of new areas of study in such areas as robotics and artificial intelligence. Similarly, the expansion of the college’s healthcare facilities will allow for the development of additional professional programs to meet area demand.

Local Soccer Coach Raises Funds To Equip Colombian Youth With Soccer Gear And Skills For Better Life

By Cheryl Conway s a soccer player since he was four and coach for the past decade, 26year old Sebastian Castillo-Giraldo’s current goal is to pay it forward and help youth from his native country. Castillo-Giraldo of Wharton has started a Go Fund Me page to purchase training equipment and provide soccer clinics to hundreds of inner city children of Colombia. The children he aims to reach live in the city of Medellin as well as Supia, Caldas, the town he was born. He plans to travel in May for ten days, May 13-May 23, with three of his soccer students and a friend, Marc Reynolds of Succasunna, a photographer/filmmaker who will be documenting the trip. “It’s time I pay it forward to those who are less fortunate and give approximately 300 kids an opportunity to use soccer as a vehicle to improve their lives,” Castillo-Giraldo states on his Go Fund Me site. “The game has allowed me to attend college and has shaped me to be the human I am today.” continued on page 21

Castillo-Giraldo grew up in Colombia, during the time of civil war, which had ended in 2016 when the peace treaty was signed, he explains. While conditions were rough, Castillo-Giraldo says “soccer was big in my town.” He started playing at the age of four; continued to play when he came to U.S. with his parents in 1998, in the fourth grade; playing at Morris Hills High School in Rockaway and college, at both County College of Morris in Randolph and the Centenary University in Hackettstown, before becoming a soccer coach 10 years ago. Castillo-Giraldo has been a soccer coach in Mt. Olive, in its camps and premier soccer program; ran the select soccer camps at Morris Hills now called Morris County Summer Select; and has been the first

assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at CCM since 2017. Through soccer, “you learn discipline, hard work, determination and team work,” says Castillo-Giraldo, teaching assistant and graduate research assistant at Monmouth University. “Those kids need it,” he says about the children in Colombia, “to help them move up in the ladder of life. “Colombia is a third world country; soccer is a tool to avoid falling into drug use and alcoholism,” he continues on the Go Fund Me page. “It’s a beacon of hope as well as a stimulator to dream big and achieve success in life. As a world history graduate student at Monmouth University, Castillo-Giraldo is currently writing his master’s thesis on “How Soccer Explains the World.”

It was in the first week of December 2017 when Castillo-Giraldo started his Go Fund Me page to help youth in Colombia. A family friend who works for the government in Colombia has identified and connected Castillo-Giraldo with youth teams most in need. Mt. Olive Soccer Club “donated a plethora of new gear,” says Castillo-Giraldo. About 90 percent of its donations are brand new and include uniforms, soccer socks, shorts, sweats, sweaters and jerseys. Kinnelon High School donated some gear as well. Most needed now is the financial support, he says, as his goal is to purchase 200 brand new Adidas balls that cost $3,000. “I can’t have soccer clinics unless I have balls for the kids,” he says. “Balls are really expensive.” The ones he plans to provide are expected to last three to five years and are “ideal for their practices and their games,” he says. Funds will also cover costs for cones and ladders as well as shipping boxes of equipment; soccer clinics for kids with proper training skills; followed my mini-talks to discuss “the power of soccer.” His plan is to help 20 youth teams with proper equipment and gear. He estimates that the boys and girls will be between the ages of 8 and 15. “I’ll be running clinic and drills,” he says, with two to three practices daily. While cycling is popular in Colombia too, Castillo-Giraldo says the “predominant sport in Colombia is soccer. It’s a passion you learn to love and you hold dear to you. The whole country plays and the whole country watches them, the Colombia National Team, national pride. Even with all the unrest, when our country was being

torn to pieces,” he explains how soccer provides a sense of pride “that brings the whole country together.” He now wants to share his love for soccer. “When I was a little kid playing in Colombia, I had great coaches that didn’t know me,” he says. “I think it’s only right to share my knowledge of soccer with those kids so they can move forward. Everyone in my family has played soccer, like it’s in my blood, in my DNA. “Race doesn’t matter, class doesn’t matter, religion doesn’t matter. It’s just the talents and skills each person brings to the table what truly matters.” Reynolds, who met Castillo-Giraldo about seven years ago when he became his eldest son’s soccer coach of Villa at NJ Dynamo, couldn’t agree more and looks forward to the trip. “I love the game of soccer; I have three sons who play,” says Reynolds. “I believe soccer should be accessible to everyone regardless of income or anything else. I know the happiness it brings and I feel everyone deserves that.” With plans to video their trip, Reynolds says “it’s about me telling a story. This to me is a story worth telling. It’s about soccer, but it’s more about humanity and giving back. I hope to capture the happiness we bring to the kids that we meet. I also want to capture Sebastian’s big/generous heart.” Donations are still being collected through May 1. “We need your help to raise as much money as possible to spread as much hope as we can,” says Castillo-Giraldo.
