Denville Residents Against Racial Injustice Hold Peaceful March

By Steve Sears n Monday evening, June 8, 2020, the group Denville Residents Against Racial Injustice held a peaceful march and rally in Denville. The event, like other recent marches around the country, was in response to the recent killing of 46-year-old George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, and in general to racial injustice.

“The march took about a week (to plan),” says Seyi Adeyinka, a member of the group, and march organizer along with fellow member, Abdul Staten. Volunteers from the group passed out flyers to week prior to alert residents to the event. “It was an amazing team of wonderful volunteers who worked very hard to make this happen. Some folks had already reached out to the mayor and the police department and got a date and a route all set. The volunteers ranged from students, professionals, retirees, social justice advocates, all who have deep love for our town.” She adds, “We had all been separately thinking about something like this and somehow we all ended up together and pulled it off.”

Over 600 people attended, which was quite a turnout for the small community. The march, which was held under bright sunshine, began at 6:00 p.m., and started on Bloomfield Avenue, continued on Broadway, turned right onto Diamond Spring Road and again onto First Avenue, then returned to Broadway and ended on Bloomfield Avenue in the Upper Bloomfield Avenue parking lot, where the rally and speeches were held. Prior to the speeches, those in

attendance had a moment of silence.

“We wanted to start a dialogue in our community and open our hearts to others regarding our experiences,” says Adeyinka. “While we live in a good town, there are others within our midst that have different experiences and I felt those stories needed to get out. It was amazing to see the support of our neighbors. A lot of people were nervous about this happening in Denville and there was a lot of talk from residents and non-residents about boycotting the event. We just wanted those voices that are typically silenced and do not have a platform to speak about their experiences.”

Adeyinka was surprised at the turnout and the impact our speakers had on the audience. “We had a lot of positive feedback. I think it was eye opening in the sense that we never have the opportunity to all come together and discuss “taboo” topics like racism, microaggressions and police brutality.” When asked if she believes that change takes time and that peaceful protests and listening are a good start, she says, “I concur. We have to start from somewhere and seize this moment where so many people are eager to listen and push for change.”

Aside from the protests, the group will continue to work with elected officials and town leaders on racial justice for all residents of Denville.

As Bastiat Would Say, Peer Past the Obvious With Pandemic Policies

ttention readers: Mark Shields is off this week. Please enjoy this column by Veronique de Rugy.

This week marks the 219th birthday of the great 19th-century French economist Frederic Bastiat. It’s the perfect time to talk about his famous essay, “That Which is Seen, and that Which is Not Seen,” published in his book, “The Law.” This timeless work remains an essential guide to thinking about policymaking.

In that essay, Bastiat writes: “In the department of economy, an act, a habit, an institution, a law, gives birth not only to an effect, but to a series of effects. Of these effects, the first only is immediate; it manifests itself simultaneously with its cause -- it is seen. The others unfold in succession -- they are not seen: it is well for us if they are foreseen. Between a good and a bad economist this constitutes the whole difference -- the one takes account of the visible effect; the other takes account both of the effects which are seen and also of those which it is necessary to foresee.”

Oh, how I wish we would have remembered to earnestly account for the unseen effects of policies put into place during this pandemic that will pop up in its aftermath.

Take, for example, the massive amount of additional debt the federal government has imposed on future generations of Americans during the COVID-19 crisis. That which is seen is the money flowing from the federal government to the unemployed, to those taking leave due to rescue money given to businesses during the pandemic. While we might be aware in the abstract that there is an accompanying rise in U.S. government indebtedness, that which is not seen is the increase in taxes that must be paid by future generations. Nor do we see the slower economic growth that will be caused by the need to pay off this debt.

Even less obvious are the unseen effects of making permanent the supposedly temporary creation of federal paid-leave entitlements. While it’s easy to point to all the advantages of such a move for the 35% of women who didn’t

Mark Shields have any such benefits pre-COVID-19, it’s more difficult to see the lower wages and employment that will result. Also hidden from our vision is the increase in employment discrimination fueled by this policy: When governments arbitrarily increase employers’ costs to hire certain groups, fewer members of those groups get hired. The academic literature is clear that such legislation inflicts very real negative effects on women.

Also harder to spot are the unseen effects of rent-control legislation. Such regulations exist in states and cities nationwide, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see more such policies implemented in this crisis’s wake. The benefits are easy to see. The rules promise to make housing in high-value rent markets more affordable for middle- and lower-class families. But once such legislation is implemented, reality kicks in.

We see rents going up more slowly than they likely would have otherwise.

When paired with eviction protections, this policy gives an illusion of control to tenants who were already in rental homes when the regulation was adopted.

What is unseen, however, is significant.

Rent-control statutes reduce the incentives for property owners to supply their facilities as residential housing, and they make it less attractive for developers to build rental housing. Rent control even dicontinued on page 6 100% MailedNewspaper Flanders, NJ 07836

Lincoln Statues Must Go. Margaret Sanger Stays?

evar Stoney, the black Democratic mayor of Richmond, Virginia, made the executive decision to remove a statue of Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson on Monument Avenue to “expedite the healing process for the city.”

This demonstrated how cities with liberal majorities can take down statues in an orderly fashion without vandalizing them or pulling them down. Or it demonstrates how Democratic mayors respond to pressure from the self-appointed statue-removal squad.

The left is interested in taking down all kinds of statues, which raises an obvious question: What about the statues the left has put up? No one’s ripping those down.

In 2017, Peter Dreier at BillMoyers. com wrote a piece headlined “Where Are All the Monuments to the Progressive Americans?” He complained most of our country’s statues celebrate military, political and business heroes.

“Shouldn’t we also honor the organizers, activists, artists, writers, athletes, judges, and occasional elected officials who fought to make the United States a more humane and inclusive country?” he asked.

Then he listed a few examples of the left ’s heroes who have statues.

Exhibit A: “This statue of the pioneering and fearless birth control advocate Margaret Sanger, with a gag over her mouth, stands in Old South Meeting House in Boston. There are no schools named for the controversial socialist and feminist.”

Honk if you find it bizarre to describe Sanger, a racist and eugenicist, as your avatar of “humane and inclusive” policies. Her creation Planned Parenthood is a leading destroyer of black lives before they start. But when black men and women cooperate in abortions, you can’t possibly be allowed to tell them those extinguished lives matter.

They were ... inconvenient.

Pro-lifers will show you Sanger’s autobiography in which she discussed

Tim Graham speaking before the women’s branch of the Ku Klux Klan: “I accepted an invitation to talk to the women’s branch of the Ku Klux Klan in Silver Lake, New Jersey. ... In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered.”

It’s not surprising that no one has vandalized the Sanger statue. No one has ripped it down and set it on fire.

It stands undisturbed. It’s not on public property. The Old South Meeting House was a Puritan church. Conservatives can despair at the “evolution” of this once-Christian space, but not one has vandalized it.

Meanwhile, NPR reported the Boston Art Commission voted unanimously on June 30 to remove Boston’s copy of the Emancipation Memorial depicting a formerly enslaved man at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. That statue has stood in Boston’s Park Square since 1879. But, activists complained, it was a “white-created statue.”

“Boston artist Tory Bullock said the sculpture is a whitewashed portrayal that denigrates an entire group of people,” NPR wrote. “This is a frozen picture. This man is kneeling, he will continued on page 6

There are also seen and unseen effects from the lockdown put in place to control COVID-19’s spread. The seen effects of the policy are millions of people limiting their interactions with others as a protection from a virus that has killed many. The unseen effects of this policy are, among other things, the rise of depression, drug overdoses and suicides; a decrease in diagnostics for other lethal diseases (which will lead to more deaths); the educational impact on children cut out from school; and the long-term economic devastation.

Peering past the obvious in order to get a more complete picture is what adults do when running their lives and managing households or business affairs. It’s what good economists do when analyzing public policies. And it’s what Frederic Bastiat did with unmatched skill and style more than two centuries ago. Unfortunately, it’s not what most politicians tend to do today.

Sanger, the racist and eugenicist, remains, while Lincoln was removed. He’s apparently the enemy of the African American people. An image of emancipation is traumatic. The abortion of black babies is apparently therapeutic.

Leftists like Tory Bullock do not understand how people who gladly acknowledge that “black lives matter” would consider the left ’s moral posturing to be based more on ideology than reality. Those on the left speak angrily and endlessly of violated “black bodies,” but -- to borrow a phrase from George Orwell -- they imply some black bodies are more equal than others.

Morris County Awarded Triple-A Bond Rating For 45th Consecutive Year

M

orris County has been awarded the top-ranked Triple-A bond rating from the nation’s two largest rating agencies, Moody’s Investors Services, Inc., and Standard & Poor’s, for the 45th consecutive year, with the ratings agencies saying the county’s stable management and fiscal policies should allow it to endure the current health crisis.

In particular, the ratings agencies lauded the Board of Freeholders’ response to the COVID-19 crisis, particularly creation of a COVID-19 Strategic Planning Advisory Committee, which is reviewing short-term and long-term ramifications of the health pandemic and planning a safe and prudent reopening of Morris County.

The Triple-A rating benefits county residents by allowing the county to take advantage of the best possible interest and financing rates, saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. In effect, it means the county has exceptional credit worthiness because the county can easily meet its financial commitments.

“We view positively that the county started a (COVID-19) task force looking at longer-term economic and financial impact

of the pandemic on the county’s finances,’’ S&P stated in its report. “A stable outlook reflects our opinion of Morris County’s very strong and diverse economy, which we expect will show resiliency during this economic downturn.’’

Moody’s stated: “While many local governments have seen seriously deleterious financial impacts thanks to the pandemic, Morris County appears to be weathering the storm more smoothly than most.’’

Lakeland Hills YMCA Early Childhood Learning Center Adapts to New Normal

reparing to Open Staff Onboarding and Training Staff working with children were updated regularly on the current CDC and DCF guidelines for COVID-19 cleaning/disinfecting, as well as social distancing and PPE protocols. Additional and ongoing online training from the YMCA will be provided.

Supplies/PPE Staff will be required to wear masks during the duration of their shift. We will continue to use household bleach to sanitize materials and surfaces, as well as provide staff with disposable gloves. Disinfectant wipes and alcohol-based hand sanitizer will be supplied.

Health and Wellness Precaution Children and staff will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms prior to entering or being admitted each day. Screening includes temperature checks (may not exceed 100.4 degrees F) and symptom checks. These checks are required to be recorded and reported to the state of New Jersey.

Preparing the Center for Children Classrooms and halls required social distancing preparations. Halls and classrooms must be limited to one group at a time.

Classrooms requiring more than one staff person will be limited to eight children.

Appropriate, compliant signage is posted as well. All cubbies were moved into classrooms to limit cross exposure of items from different classes and to help speed up drop off and pick up procedures.

Play areas were marked for children to be able to play six feet apart, to the best of our ability. Play areas requiring the sharing of toys were removed from the classrooms and will be gradually introduced as social distancing measures loosen. Bright tape was used to demark spaces.

Classroom rugs have been temporarily removed for easier daily cleaning and sanitizing.

“School kits” were pre-assembled for children to contain their own regular-use supplies, including art materials and tools.

Furniture, including tables, were moved around to make sure there are ways to properly distance children during mealtimes.

Changes to daily routine Extra handwashing will be added into the schedule.

COVID-19 Health and Wellness Curriculum was developed for sharing and collaboration with children. Children will need

time to learn, process and understand what, how and why the rules are so strict.

Children will be invited to participate in the discussion and creation of new classroom “norms” especially in the older rooms where children know a lot about COVID-19 and social distancing. Teachers will approach the return of children to the center in the same mindset as we would plan the

first day of school. Children will take time to adapt back into the setting, made more unfamiliar with the COVID-19 conditions.

Schedule and routine will be vital from day one, but within the set schedule and routine, we will be prepared to be flexible as per their social emotional and intellectual needs. continued on page 12

Morris County has had a Triple-A rating since 1975. It was the first county government in New Jersey to obtain the prestigious rating and is one of about a dozen in the nation to achieve it.

The 2020 renewed Triple A ratings were made after a county finance team, comprised of Freeholders, the County Administrator, Assistant County Administrator, County’s Chief Financial Officer, and others made virtual presentations to ratings agencies last month.

All will be asked every day if you or anyone in your home has been with anyone diagnosed positive of COVID-19 within the past 14 days AND/OR if anyone in your household has symptoms of respiratory illness (e.g. fever, shortness of breath, cough). Affirmative answers to the above symptom check will disqualify the child or adult from entering the Learning Center until they are cleared by a medical professional. We reserve the right to exclude anyone based on travel to high risk area.

Child Drop-Off Parents must remove their child from the car. Children will be brought to the vestibule for screening as they arrive.

Children and parents will cue according to social distancing guidelines while waiting. Parent must stay with child(ren) prior to completion of screening and intake.

Temperatures will be checked by non-contact forehead heat-scan thermometers. Upon completion of screening, child will be checked in, hands sanitized, remove their shoes and be escorted to their classroom by staff. Children and staff will wash their hands immediately when entering the classroom. Children and staff will keep additional slippers or slide on shoes at the center to change into to avoid

contamination.

Items that come in from home will be limited. Personal toys, stuffed, animals, etc. will be excluded.

Health Exclusion from the Center (adults and children) Staff or children who have tested positive for COVID-19 must remain away from the center until cleared to return by a medical professional. The local board of health will be contacted for further guidance.

Throughout the Day Classroom Social Distancing and Materials Children and staff should remain six feet apart whenever possible. Inside six feet staff and children should don a mask. Classrooms, activities and materials should remain limited Play areas are established for one-at-a-time use OR table activities enabling six feet of space between children individually working with materials.

Shared materials will be avoided wherever and whenever possible. Materials will be cleaned and sanitized between uses. All classrooms will employ the use of a Dirty Toy Bin for frequent cleaning and sanitizing throughout the day. Unnecessary materials, toys and cloth-based items (stuffed animals, pillows, etc.) were removed from classrooms.

Groups will not mix throughout the day. Groups will move individually through the center and will only use the side entrance. There will be no access to the elevator or back door.

Outside time: Playground will be used every morning by 1 group. We will be bringing the children to the fields for CATCH Activities that require little to no shared equipment

or personal contact.

Naptime: Mats will be minimally three feet apart, but optimally six feet apart, arranged “head to toe” during rest and nap. Bedding will be individually bagged every day.

Meals and Snacks: During snack and mealtimes, prior-existing food handling requirements are in play in accordance to the childcare license, including the use of gloves ALWAYS when handling children’s food. We will continue to use disposable plates and utensils to prepare and serve food to children. Children must be seated six feet away from each other so that they will not touch each other or each other’s food while eating.

Staff and children MUST wash hands before and after mealtimes. Tables and surfaces must be cleaned and sanitized before and after as well.

Child comforting: Throughout the day physical comfort will need to be provided. Gloves and masks will be worn.

Sick Child at the Center A space is established at the center for children who cleared the screen but show or developed symptoms during the day: Fever exceeding 100.4 degrees F; cough; shortness of breath; other excludable symptoms according to the DCF License and DOH. Children will be kept comfortable via social distance and staff will don mask and other PPE to supervise at social distance. Upon the child’s exit for the day, the room surfaces and any touched materials must be cleaned and sanitized.

Child must be cleared by a medical professional prior to returning to the center.

By Jerry Del Priore t would be easy to hypothesize that Morris Catholic’s Jadyn Watson might feel some sort of pressure to follow in the footsteps of her mom, Lorraine Watson, and aunt, Lorice Watson.

Both were accomplished basketball players in their days, with her mom playing five to six years of professional basketball in Mexico, and her aunt, a former college hoopster

who has coached the men and women’s game on the collegiate level.

But no one has ever made the younger Watson feel obligated to play the sport.

In fact, she said that it was her own decision to take up the game, not even knowing one important fact about her mother’s past.

“I brought home a (basketball) flyer in the third grade not knowing that she

played basketball,” Watson recollected. “She never pressured me at all.”

All Watson’s mom wanted from her was to know the level of basketball earnestness that she possessed.

“My mom asked me how serious I was about playing basketball,’ she said. “I told her I wanted to play at the D-I level, and play professionally one day.

cleaned with soap and water, then sanitized by bleach solution. All wiping will be done with disposable paper towels and gloves. Both should be disposed after each use.

Door handles, light switches and commonly touched areas will be cleaned several times a day.

Closing the Center at the end of the day All surfaces and materials will be cleaned and sanitized one last time. Items will be taken off the floor and stored on tables for optimal night-time floor cleaning.

CDC recommends HEPA vacuuming carpets and rugs.

All toys will be sanitized and placed back in their appropriate bins.

Screening vestibule will be cleaned and sanitized, with masks, gloves and other supplies at the ready for opening the next morning.

For now, the Center is open from 8am - 5pm each day, 5 days per week, for fullday school for children ages 2.5-5 years of age. Enrollment is now open for September preschool.

all the way,” the Manhattan-born Watson continued. “But she kept asking me if I wanted to play. They (her mom and aunt) knew how hard it would be to play at the D-I level.”

To help Watson improve her overall playing ability, her mom placed her in a New York City AAU boys’ league, which, she said, added more physical and mental grittiness to her impressive skill set.

“It made me more physical,” said Watson, who played with the boys from the fourth to the seventh grade. “With injuries now, I can play through them. It has made me tougher.”

Morris Catholic girl’s head coach Billy Lovett told Watson that he would do everything in his power to raise her recruitment, as did her New Jersey Cardinals AAU head coach, Michele Sharp.

It has worked, as Watson said she holds seven D-I offers at the moment: San Jose State, Florida Atlantic, Delaware, UIC, Northeastern, Hartford, and UMass-Lowell.

“The recruiting process has been great,” the 6-foot-1, 165-pound stretch-four rising senior said. “My coaches have been great at promoting me, showing my game film and my workout videos.”

Lovett duly noted that he’s enjoyed seeing Watson’s vast development in one year at the Denville school, and doesn’t doubt her college hoops future.

“Her growth from the beginning of the season to the end was great,” Lovett said.

“She averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and had some big games, and even carried us at times. She’s a great person–on and off the court–and is a delight to be around. I

can definitely see her playing at a high level (in college). It’s just a matter of the right fit for her.”

Watson said she isn’t rushing into any hasty decisions at the moment. But when she picks a college, she noted that it must have a nice family atmosphere, both on campus and on the hoops squad.

“I’m not jumping on any offers right now,” said Watson, who wants to study chemistry in college, and possibly become a high school chemistry teacher.

“Right now, I’m being cautious because there aren’t any school visits going on (because of the COVID-19 pandemic),” Watson explained. “But I want a school that has a family feel to it, and on the basketball team, which is important to me. But I will let it (college choice) happen naturally.”

For Watson, Lovett said she didn’t make the All-Morris County squad, and it’s something that will motivate her to play even better next year.

“She wasn’t picked All-County, and it drives her every day,” he said with conviction.

Outdoor Dining and Pop Up Parks Become Popular in Denville

By: Megan Roche or those in Denville and the surrounding towns who have missed going out to eat, the Downtown Denville BID has come to your rescue. Many areas surrounding Broadway have recently become pop up parks where takeout food can be enjoyed from many of the restaurants in the downtown shopping district.

According to Fitzpatrick, there are some stipulations in place when it comes to these pop up parks.

“The pop up tables are only for takeout. Our establishments cannot serve to these little pop up parks. It is up to the public to clean up after themselves. We certainly are cleaning things regularly, but we can’t do it every hour.

We’re asking the public just to do their part,” Fitzpatrick said.

Pop up parks are currently located in the A&R Interiors parking lot, McCarter Park, under the clocktower, and along First Avenue. Some restaurants, like Thatcher McGhees and The Pasta Shop, have also used some of their parking spots in front of their establishments for additional outdoor dining space. Many restaurants have also put outdoor dining tables on their sidewalks in front of their establishments as well.

“There is a plethora of outdoor areas where you can eat out. There are a lot of different options of where you can go if you order out. We have a pretty robust outside area for people to enjoy a meal out,” Fitzpatrick said.

Downtown Denville is also working on planning anoth-

er installment of Denville After Dark. The first event, held in late June, closed down Broadway so residents could visit the area, shop, and dine, with picnic and bar top tables scattered around Broadway. Masks must be worn during the event and social distancing must be practiced, but Fitzpatrick says the first event was a great success.

“You couldn’t get a seat in any restaurant or at any of our tables. It was a great, positive night downtown. We are relying on the public and the stores to abide by the social distancing protocols, and it’s a balancing act for sure.

As long as everyone abides by those rules of the executive

order, we can continue to have nights like this. We’re currently working on planning more of these types of nights with the administration and the police,” Fitzpatrick said.

Indoor dining was slated to reopen on July 2, but Governor Murphy put a stop to that as coronavirus cases have been on the rise. Downtown Denville is anxiously awaiting any news as to when things can begin to open again.

By Steve Sears 6-year-old Caleigh Lans, a liver transplant recipient and member of Team Lans, which does the yearly American Liver Foundation Live Life Walk, remembers it well.

“When I was about 11, I began experiencing symptoms that I would later find were linked to liver disease,” says the Ridgewood resident. “I rapidly lost weight, I experienced intense itching on my legs, so much so that I would scratch until I bled. My skin became discolored and yellow. I went from doctor to doctor and they all recommended different specialists and I felt like I was falling down a rabbit hole, but I didn’t really have a choice. I kept going to the doctors, I kept getting blood work done, I even went to several neurologists to see if it was something in my head. Finally, after we couldn’t take the lack of answers anymore, my parents took me to the ER. Blood work was drawn and that’s when they discovered my liver numbers were way off.”

Lans, who works as a real estate agent in Garfield, was again sent to a multitude of doctors, her visits taking her to a hospital in Hackensack, but also beyond to one in New York City, and she and her parents even flew out to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to see if the mystery of her illness could be discovered. “I spent the entirety of my high school years in and out of hospitals,” she says, “too sick to participate.”

By the time Lans was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a chronical disease which attacks the bile ducts both inside and outside a person’s liver, the illness had progressed so much she had to be put on a transplant list. “About a month later, I got the call and went into surgery!” she says.

Lans was the first in her family to suffer from liver disease, and every year since her liver transplant in March

Rich Goldberg, the mastermind behind Vetfest, was looking for a way to continue his efforts in helping the state’s homeless veteran population.

Through his work volunteering for Community Hope, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, Goldberg has come to know many veterans throughout the area who have simply fallen on hard times. With a passion for music as well, Goldberg combined the two and decided on a concert to benefit them. The first ever Vetfest was held in 2019 and was a major success, raising over $24,000.

Although I am feeling MUCH better now, having had a liver transplant, it will be a lifelong battle for me. My immune system is severely compromised, so especially during times like these (a pandemic), it’s scary for me.

The American Liver Foundation’s mission is to fund the research to prevent and treat liver disease. That has become my personal mission as well.”

Lans credits some amazing people she works with who have also decided to make defeating liver disease their mission, and herself states her purpose in the fight, especially in these trying times. “I wouldn’t be doing my duty as a transplant survivor and advocate if I didn’t touch on this when discussing the ultimate goal of defeating liver disease.

You see, although having a liver transplant 100% saved my life, the road to recovery didn’t stop there. In order to keep my body from rejecting the transplanted liver, I am on many drugs that completely wipe out my immune system, so it doesn’t ‘fight back’ against the transplanted organ.

Of course, that means I can’t really fight off anything. I am at an incredible risk for common colds and flus but during a (COVID-19) pandemic, it’s especially concerningCathy as I am Kelly very much at risk for contracting this as well. I Remember Dad:

The Coming of Age of Dad and I

M

By Richard Mabey Jr. y father and I came of age in very different circumstances. When my dad was 17, in the midst of World War II, his mom and dad got the news that Dad’s older brother Edward was lost at sea.

The sad news came that a German ship had sunk the ship that Uncle Ed was aboard, leaving him bobbing up and down in the Atlantic Ocean, off of the coast of England. It was an English ship that saved Uncle Ed and his fellow Navy survivors.

I think that very moment, when Dad heard that his brother was lost at sea, my father decided to join the service. My grandmother was a very patriotic woman, but she was dead set against Dad joining the service at 17 years of age. I don’t know how he did it, but Dad convinced Grandma to sign the paperwork that allowed him to join the United States Army Air Corps.

After his basic training at Fort McLellan in Alabama, Dad was assigned to the Seventh Army Air Corps and was sent to Hickam Air Field in Hawaii. It was at Hickam Air Field that my dad was trained to work in the hangars and open fields to maintain and repair the famous P-51 Mustang Fighter Planes.

My coming of age, was quite different from that of my beloved father. On September fifth of 1970, I turned 17 and began my senior year at Boonton High School. I was a very earnest, serious student. I worked part time at the Shop-Rite grocery store in my hometown of Lincoln Park. I had managed to save up enough money to buy a 1961 Ford Falcon. And, I was dating Penny, who was a very pretty and incredibly smart girl.

While my dad learned in detail, how airplane engines worked, I struggled through an advanced math class and chemistry class. I often wondered if Dad struggled in learning how to repair an airplane engine, as I struggled to learn chemistry. Sadly, I’ll never know. At 66 years old, and 15 years since my beloved father went Home to be with the Lord, I think of all the questions that I would have loved to have asked him.

But now it’s too late.

My dad and I shared a dear and wonderful common bond. We both endearingly loved the home and land of the Mabey Estate on Mabey Lane in Lincoln Park. There was a big open field, that lied between the home that my great grandfather, William Mabey, built and the home that my grandfather, Watson Mabey, built. Grandpa always referred to it as Earl’s Meadow. For it was on this open field, a little over an acre in size, that Grandpa’s brother Earl was going to build a home, when he came home from fighting in the front lines of World War I. Sadly, Great Uncle Earl never came home.

He was killed in battle.

From about the time I was in eighth grade and on through my second year of

County College of Morris, Dad and I always farmed a great big garden on Earl’s Meadow. Sadly, I cannot find any pictures of that magnificent garden. We grew corn, tomatoes, string beans, radishes, and peppers. I loved working on that big garden with Dad on Saturdays. It is one of my most cherished memories of coming of age at the old Mabey Homestead.

Dad proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps. When I turned 18, my cousin Earl, who was named after Great Uncle Earl, told me that I should sign up for the National Guard. Sadly, I was rejected because I had heart damage from having had rheumatic fever when I was 12 years old.

I could say that I wanted to join the service to answer my patriotic call. And, there was some truth to that. But, mainly I wanted to wear a uniform to impress my girlfriend, Penny, and make her even more proud of me than she already was.

When Dad came home from Hickam Air Field, he courted and then married my mom, Janet Kemmerer of Boonton. In contrast, in the Summer of 1972, when I finished my first year at County College and Penny graduated high school, Penny then began her freshman year at Rutgers University in the Autumn of 1972 and sadly, we drifted apart.

Dad and I both loved the great outdoors.

The old Mabey Homestead was once surrounded by forest, before the big developments were built. My father and I would often hike through the woods to the old Morris Canal and walk the old tow path. It is a most cherished memory I have of my father. Dad had an immense knowledge of the Morris Canal, since his father was the Chief Engineer of Incline Plane Ten East.

My father and I had very different experiences of our coming of age, that magical time between being 17 ad 18 years old.

But, we also had common bonds that dug deep into the crevices of the chambers of our hearts. I loved my dad very much. It’s been over 15 years since Dad went Home to be with the Lord. I still deeply mourn his passing.

It always makes me very sad when I hear a father speak unkindly of his son. Or, when I hear a son speak unkindly of his father. Life is short. Forgiveness is the sweet nectar of life. Holding a grudge is the poison that will destroy a person’s heart, mind, and soul.

Love is the key to all human understanding.

If your dad is still on this side of Heaven’s Gate, please do give him a call today. Not next week, not even tomorrow, but rather today. Tell your dad you love him, I wish I could mine.

1888: When Denville Had a Ball Team

By Peter Zablocki he ball was coming in fast. All he could think about was winning the game against their biggest rival, yet here he was lying in a pool of his own blood. Dan Righter was playing second base for the Denville Uncas – so named after a tribe of Indians who were thought to have once lived in the neighborhood. The Rockaway team was never an easy game to play. It was known to draw the biggest crowd from the small village, which was not yet its own municipality, and would not separate proper from Rockaway for another 25 years. The foul fly that tipped him in the nose on that day, would actually make the game one of the most memorable ones in the area as to still be recalled nearly fifty years later in the town; and now once again, with an additional eighty years added on.

Denville assembled its first baseball team in 1885. The first three years were tough, especially with its bigger town rival – or rather, the other team in the town of

Rockaway – dominating the young Morris County league. On the day that Dan was hit, the Uncas had yet to win the game against them. But that was about to change.

The team at the time was made up of farmers, store clerks, and railroad workers. The names might be recognized today as they include the “who’s who” from our town’s history. On the Denville team were Elmer Dickerson and his brother Frank, Daniel M. Righter and his brothers Joseph B. Righter, and Frank Righter, Charles Clark, A. Cooper, S. Garrison and I. Hall.

The games were played on Daniel Dickerson’s farm, today’s Church Street. With a new formation that included Garrison and Frank Righter batting, Charlie Clark playing short stop, and Elmer Dickerson playing left field, Dan knew that he needed to finish the game. The score was 4 – 4 in the 5th inning. The closest they had ever come. Wiping the blood off his face, the elder Righter brother got up and with one continued on page 21

continued from page 19 hand occupied by his glove, he used the other to hold a handkerchief over his nose for the remainder of the game. That day, his teammates resolved to fight on in the name of their friend.

It was a complete team effort that saw Elmer Dickerson strike out 5 men. The game ended with Dan Righter collapsing unconscious and the score of 10 – 4 for Denville. For several days, the young man’s nosebleed, which refused to stop,

stumped the county doctors that came to see him. Yet, Dan did not care; his team won, and he could not stop talking about the game, even as he was feeling weaker by the hour. After a few days, someone suggested using cobwebs to stop the flow of blood and Dan’s life was saved. The men on the team knew that the sacrifice was special. What followed were years of massive success for the Denville Uncas, with at least one newspaper labeling them a team which “struck terror in the hearts of their opponents.”

Elmer Dickerson, who was a store owner in town, became the team’s undisputed star. In an 1893 game against Graystone Park, he struck out 13 men which led him to being asked to join the New York Giants on their Southern trip. But the man had a responsibility to his family business, and Denville may have lost a future professional baseball star. By that time, many of the original men from the 1888 game had moved on to start families and dedicate the time to their daily jobs. They were replaced by youngsters excited to continue the legacy of one of the greatest Morris county teams to ever come from these parts. In the late 1890s, the team was captained by a new rising star,

the future Morris County Sheriff, Fred S. Myers, more commonly known as “Lefty.”

The boy continued the legacy of the neversay-die attitude, being remembered by his teammates as someone that would rather play baseball than eat. By 1901, the now semi-professional team, became the first in the county to have a non-white player, a waiter at the town’s popular restaurant, the Wayside Inn. Unfortunately, the team ceased to exist around the time of World War I. The next time Denville men took to the baseball field in an organized manner was in 1931, followed by the creation of the town’s Little League by Doc. Gardner – yes, that Gardner – in 1952. So as young boys and girls march in the town’s Little League parade each April, they should know that they are following a tradition that started nearly 130 years ago. And although, the world had other plans for our children this past April, let them remember the neversay-die attitude that symbolizes being part of this town. Denville strong then; and Denville strong now.

For her minor, she completed an Honors thesis in Cognitive Science.

Post-graduation, Kristen will be applying to physical therapy schools later this year and would like to be starting a program by next year. Corrine hopes to work next as an athletic trainer for a year or so.

“I did apply for an athletic trainer position “pre-coronavirus,” she explains, “but who knows what will happen with that considering everything that is still going on. In the near future, I do have plans to apply to graduate school to become a Physician’s Assistant.”

Before college, both were star standouts on the Morris Knolls soccer team.

Both young women were students of the Honors College, and both played for the school soccer team. Corrine majored in Athletic Training, while Kristen majored in Exercise Science.

“Originally the both of us planned to attend Montclair State University because we were recruited to play soccer,” says Kristen, “but in the end we decided to switch to WPU to play soccer and because with the cost of both of us, it just made sense to attend Willy P instead.” Corrine adds her two (get it? “two”) cents. “Our payments were somewhat of a factor for us to go to the same school, but not entirely. Back in high school, we did talk about if we would go to the same school or not, but I think it all came down to the fact we

both wanted to continue playing soccer in college and we both knew we couldn’t play on a team without each other.”

The twins commuted together to the campus all four years, sharing the same car since high school. “With soccer, class, and with the both of us each working two jobs, we really had to balance out our schedules in order to be able to share the car together,” Kristen says. Every morning the duo would alternate driving duties and, since it was about a 40-minute commute (sometimes more depending on traffic), the “passenger” twin had the chance to catch up on a little more sleep. “The car rides home were always the best,” adds Kristen, “because we would tell each other about our day, what's going on, and even jam out to our favorite music together. It was great to have someone to share the long commute with.”

When freshmen, both had the same major, but by sophomore year Kristen switched to Exercise Science, her ultimate goal to become a physical therapist. “I so

If I think back on what life would be like without her, it would be boring and lonely. Even though it's sometimes annoying that I've shared a room with her since birth (we were also womb mates...ha-ha).

I wouldn't change a thing about our relationship.” She also echoes her sister’s feelings about their school. “These last four years at WPU have been incredible.

Help Operation Chillout Help Homeless Veterans This Summer

By Elsie Walker ost people take having clean water to drink for granted. They just turn on a faucet in their homes and out comes the water. However, what if a person is homeless? Where does he or she get water? Founder and Director of Operation Chillout, Ray Chimileski, recalled that a homeless veteran, who had sepsis, died while waiting for an operation because he took his medication with polluted river water. Chimileski noted, that from the organization’s own experience and information from the New Jersey Department of Military and Veteran Affairs, “one in every five homeless people is a veteran”.

In addition to the need for water, there are also the problems of staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter, how does one do that when he or she is living on the streets?

Helping solve the problems of homelessness and helping homeless veterans receive the services they qualify for are the two focuses of Operation Chillout. Operation Chillout is New Jersey’s oldest all volunteer mobile outreach for veterans and homeless men and women. Started in 2000, its membership is made up of both veterans and ci-

vilians. It serves all of New Jersey, northeast Pennsylvania, and coastal Rhode Island.

Chimileski shared that Operation Chillout was “selected to be the statewide special project 2020-2021 of the New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs.” (The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs is the largest volunteer women's service organization in the state and a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs.)

Operating out of Long Valley, just one of the many ways Operation Chillout helps is through giving out certain items during the summer and winter; in the summer, those items are caps, t-shirts, and bottled water.

Since veterans congregate where other homeless do, Chillout gives the items to non-veterans as well. In the past, the supplies it shared were donations of items received from drives done by groups or from individuals. The summer collection is done Memorial Day – Labor Day. However, this year, because of COVID19, Operation Chillout can’t take donations of physical items, but is taking monetary donations to buy the summer items. Seeing a homeless veteran, a member of Operation Chillout will give this “peace offering”; the summer or winter items, and the organization’s card. Chimileski calls the items “a peace offering” because homeless veterans may have had bad experiences in the past in trying to get the services they need; they may have become frustrated and given up. They may be wary of help.

Operation Chillout wants these homeless veterans to know that it will be their advocate in helping to get them the services for which they qualify and also help them with other needs.

Chimileski noted that this year’s distribution of items will be different due to COVID19 restrictions. Some shelters are closed. Also, Operation Chillout won’t be allowed to put up its table and speak oneon -one with homeless veterans. Operation Chillout will be delivering the items it usually gives out (and its cards for homeless veterans) to the organizations to distribute, like the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark), soup kitchens, etc.

Chimileski noted that COVID-19 restrictions have affected the organization in another way, too. Operation Chillout has cancelled its annual August Vet Fest fundraiser which benefits the organization’s Rapid Response Team Hotline and veterans rescue housing costs. “Our Rapid Response Team runs 24/7/365. We receive calls daily at our automated hotline (609-619-0861) from or about homeless veterans. Referrals come from many sources: individuals, agencies, first responders, family members and often the VA itself. We provide no cost transportation and brief motel stays and whatever incidental items are needed to rescue the veteran from the homeless crisis. While secure and safe, we arrange or provide access to longer term housing solutions. In 2019, we rescued an average of one new homeless veteran per day - over 300 individuals.”

Diary of a Scout Leader: Writing from the Heart

By Richard Mabey Jr. ur story so far: It is the first day of summer vacation of 1969. I am 15 years old and have just completed my sophomore year at Boonton High School. It is nearing high noon and I have spent the entire morning painting Thorpe Hall of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, for my Eagle Scout project. After eating my lunch, a man comes to the door and begins banging on the door and demanding that I let him in. Fortunately, I had locked the door. I try to huddle out of sight of this man, who is continuing to hammer on the door and scream for someone to let him in. Shortly after that, my mom knocks on the door of Thorpe Hall. My sister, Patti, is with Mom. I clean up and we all go to Moe’s Sweet Shop. Cute Mary Tafano is at Moe’s. To my utter surprise, Mary asks me to her birthday party on Saturday. Later that afternoon, I help Mom to get supper ready, while my sister Patti plays in the yard, with her neighborhood friend. After supper, Dad comes into my room, while I am at my desk and offers words of encouragement and hope to me. Morning comes, Dad drives me to Thorpe Hall on his way to work. Our story continues.

I reached the top of the stairs leading to Thorpe Hall. I stood at the outdoor balcony, with the hall key in my hand. My dad waved to me, from within his blue Ford Econoline pick-up truck. I waved back to Dad. Then Dad drove out of the parking lot and made the right turn on Station Road and headed off to work. As the morning sun shined upon my face, I felt the blessing and protection of the Divine One. My fears and anxieties began to melt away, about whether or not the obnoxious man would return today.

I opened the door, walked into Thorpe Hall, and immediately turned around and locked the door. I walked to the back kitchen and put my brown bag lunch in the refrigerator. Then walked out of the kitchen and standing in the doorway, from the kitchen to Thorpe Hall, took a moment to take in the quiet, the solace, the comfort of seeing a thousand and one memories blur in front of my eyes. I saw the ghosts of old scout leaders, some of whom had passed through Heaven’s Gate, some of whom had moved far away. I saw the ghosts of

all of my old buddies, who were once my fellow scouts, but had one by one dropped out of dear old Boy Scout Troop 170.

Across the long hall, was the legendary stage. It was the very stage, where Troop 170 would hold its Court of Honors, special events and holiday parties. I had first joined Troop 170 when I turned 11 years old in September of 1964. I was now 15, halfway through high school, and I had a big job to finish, if I wanted to earn the coveted rank of Eagle Scout, scouting’s highest rank.

Before I opened the paint can, before I spread out the blue tarps upon the floor, I sat down and reflected upon the thousand and one memories that Thorpe Hall held for me in my heart, mind, and soul. I had a few sheets of notebook paper in my denim pocket and I was suddenly moved to write an essay on what scouting meant to me.

From the time I was 12 years old, I often wrote little articles about Troop 170 for the old Lincoln Park Herald. Mostly about the Klondike Derbies, the big camporees, summer camp, the annual week-long canoe trip down the Delaware River and hiking the Appalachian Trail. But this was a kind of different article for me. It spoke more from my heart, about what scouting meant to me. I remember while writing this composition, I began to seriously consider presenting it to Mr. Marino, the Editor-in-Chief of the Lincoln Park Herald, to see if he thought it was worthy of being published.

I turned to my left and just looked at the old stage for a few minutes. I saw the ghosts of all those many scouts who were once a part of Boy Scout Troop 170 and had now moved on. I was furiously determined to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, so I happily stayed in my scout troop, when so many of my good friends dropped out of the troop.

I remember this so very well. I wrote my heart out that early morning in June of 1969. My heart, mind and soul poured out upon those sheets of notebook paper. Perhaps it was the strange and eerie feeling of being alone in my old scout meeting room.

It was kind of a home away from home, for me. I had so very many good memories of that scout meeting hall.

I didn’t know it at the time. But that very essay that I wrote that morning, changed

my life. I had stepped out of the who, what, when, where and why of straight forward journalism, and had written an essay that poured forth from the deepest chords and chambers of my heart. I was beginning to grow as a writer.

I finished my hand written essay and put it in my shirt pocket, close to my heart.

My plan was to type it and then present it to Mr. Marino. I then spread out the big

blue plastic tarps on the floor. I opened the can of eggshell white paint and began painting the walls of Thorpe Hall. All the while I thought, “I hope Mr. Marino publishes my composition.”
