hen Jeff and Gina Mortman purchased Gold’s Gym at 18 Furler St. two and a half years ago, they wanted the gym to provide activities and workout equipment for everyone.

The Wayne couple’s goal was to make Gold’s Gym a place where people could come to workout alone, in a small group, or with the whole family.

Gold’s Gym has been at the Furler Street location for 20 years but before 2017, it was under different ownership.

When the Mortmans bought the gym, they renovated the facility from top to bottom.

The 40,000 square foot building now

has a larger childcare center that’s popular among parents and children with an added children’s gaming lounge and arts and crafts area. There is also a spin room for cyclists, a basketball court, a freestyle boxing room, a 7,000 square foot training area with a turf floor, and tanning beds, among other amenities.

“We bought the gym two and a half years ago with a vision of what it could be,” said Gina Mortman.

In rebuilding the gym, they made it a place that caters to all fitness levels. Whether you are an experienced bodybuilder or new to fitness, Gold’s Gym is the place for you.

In addition to attracting people of all ages and fitness levels, the Mortmans wanted to be of service to veterans, current servicemen and women, and emergency first responders.

“My family and I love the military because I proudly served for 16 years,” Jeff Mortman said. “We have the utmost respect for them and all that they do for our country.”

Jeff Mortman served in the U.S. Marines for 16 years. He and his family have made giving back to emergency first responders, veterans and current servicemen and women a priority. There’s a patriotic feel throughout the whole gym.

The gym is decorated with U.S. Veteran handmade flags representing all military branches. In addition, there are flags representing all first responders.

Veterans are offered a special deal when they sign up to become members of the gym, which includes a $0 enrollment fee.

Active members of the military, police officers, firefighters and EMTs are offered the Heroes program, which includes a $0 enrollment fee, a discounted monthly rate, and access to all amenities at the gym.

During the spring, the Mortmans host an annual car show which raises money for the Semper Fi Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides financial help and support to post 9/11 combat wounded, critically ill, and severely injured servicemen and women.

“The event was highly attended,” said Gina Mortman. “We were featured on the Jersey Proud segment of News 12.

“The show is becoming an annual event that everyone loves. Look out for the next one around May 2020,” Gina Mortman said.

The Mortmans do charity fundraisers for local residents including an event for a local resident who had survived breast cancer and an event for a local family who was impacted by recent flooding. Proceeds from that fundraising event helped the family rebuild their home.

Regardless of who you are, the goal for everyone is the same, according to the Mortmans, which is to feel good after a day or night at the gym.

Woodland Park Student Ranks Number 5 as BMX Rider

D

ylan Baumann, a third grader at Beatrice Gilmore School in Woodland Park, recently was named NAG 5

by USA BMX at the Grand National Finals held in Oklahoma. This ranks Dylan fifth in the country for all 9-year-old riders. Racing as a member of Hunterdon County BMX, Dylan and his teammates competed against some of the most fastest riders from all over the country. He has put in countless hours of training to help him get reach this level.​

Woodland Park/Totowa Holiday Parade Brings in Large Toy Donations

T

he West Paterson and Totowa Fire Departments kicked off the holiday season with their first Holiday Parade much to the delight of hundreds of people who lined up along the streets in both towns to watch. Over 140 trucks, apparatuses, and floats drove down Union Boulevard in Totowa, McBride Avenue and the Dowling section of Woodland Park.

During the parade, Santa’s helpers collected toys along the route from spectators. Over 600 toys were collected which will benefit families in need in Totowa and Woodland Park, as well as St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

laucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss, affecting about 3 million people in the United States. Because there are no symptoms early on, about half of people with the disease don’t know they have it. Once vision is lost to glaucoma, it can’t be regained. During Glaucoma Awareness Month in January, *EyeCare Consultants of NJ and the American Academy of Ophthalmology join together in reminding the public that early detection and treatment, and some lifestyle choices can help protect your sight.

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the retina to the brain. Typically, the disease progresses slowly, gradually destroying peripheral vision. Because people are unaware of early peripheral vision loss, a patient can lose most of it before they even know they have glaucoma.

That’s why the Academy recommends that everyone have a comprehensive eye exam at age 40. This exam provides ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – an opportunity to carefully examine the eye including the optic nerve for signs of damage and other possible problems

that may affect vision. Individuals at greater risk for developing glaucoma include people · over age 40; · of African, Asian or Hispanic heritage; · who have high eye pressure detected during an eye exam; · who are farsighted or nearsighted; · who have experienced eye trauma or eye injury; · whose corneas are thin in the center; · or who have health problems such as diabetes, migraines, high blood pressure or poor blood circulation.

Appropriate treatment for glaucoma depends on the specific type and severity of the disease. Medicated eye drops or laser treatments are the most common initial approach. These techniques work by lowering eye pressure to reduce the amount of fluid in the eye, and by increasing fluid outflow from the eye.

Beyond drugs and surgery, several recent studies suggest that lifestyle choices may also help minimize the risk of losing vision to glaucoma. *Exercise regularly. A study just published in Oph-

A new study published last month in the Journal Glaucoma showed that a relaxation program with meditation can lower eye pressure in glaucoma patients and improve their quality of life by lowering stress hormones like cortisol. *Don’t use CBD as a “natural” glaucoma remedy. CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-psychotropic component of cannabis and hemp being touted as a magical cure-all. A study published last month in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science shows it actually raised eye pressure in mice.

Cold Weather Tips to Protect Your Feet and Ankles

Foot and ankle surgeon provides essential winter safety advice

Ironically, it is during the winter when many injuries in the lower extremities occur due to weather-related incidents.

From ankle sprains, to frostbite to broken toes, the damage can vary. However, by taking proper preventive measures, a person can decrease his or her chance of incurring a foot or ankle problem during the colder months, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

In general, most people would do best to take the necessary safety steps to avoid foot and ankle injuries in the winter. However, injury prevention for those who have poor circulation, nerve damage caused by neuropathy or Raynaud’s phenomenon, which is an extreme sensitivity to coldness, can be paramount.

To help, ACFAS provides three critical and easy-to-follow tips that can mean all the difference between comfort and pain in your feet during the winter.

1.Wear the Right Shoes “Whether caused by wearing high heels on icy surfaces or

just sheer accident, falls are one of the most common causes of weather-related injuries. Wintertime falls often result in an ankle sprain, or worse, a broken bone in the foot, ankle, heel or toe.

I encourage patients to wear low-heeled shoes or boots with a traction sole to help prevent slipping,” said Dr. Catalano.

Equally important, wearing warm shoes or boots can protect a person’s feet in frigid temps. “Wearing water-resistant, insulated footwear serves as a barrier between the feet and outside elements; this is particularly important for patients with neuropathy or Raynaud’s phenomenon. While different, both conditions block normal blood flow in the feet and places a person at a greater risk of developing additional problems. In some cases, people can incur chilblains, which are itchy, tender, red patches that emerge in response to cold air, or in extreme cases, frostbite,” added Dr. Catalano.

Remember, the thicker the insulation, the greater the protection is between a person’s feet and the adverse effects caused by cold weather.

2. Keep Your Feet Dry Damp feet can cause cold feet and can be just as harmful.

dry from internal wetness caused by sweat, while water-resistant footwear will ward off external weather elements that can cause dampness.

“I encourage my patients to wear appropriate socks as a standard practice during the winter months to guard their feet in both foreseen and unexpected inclement weather conditions,” said Dr. Catalano.

For some, inserting foot warmers in their shoes serves as an extra layer of protection. Before doing so, it is best to consult with a foot and ankle surgeon. If worn incorrectly, foot warmers can burn the skin and cause severe harm for those with nerve damage.

3. Get the Right Help With all that can happen to the feet and ankles during the winter months, it is best to know what to do when faced with a condition or injury brought on by cold weather.

“In the case of a suspected fracture or sprain caused by a fall, see a foot and ankle surgeon or visit the emergency room as soon as possible for prompt diagnosis and treatment. If medical care is unavailable, for temporary relief of symptoms, try the RICE principle—Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. But remember, delaying treatment can result in long-term complications,” added Dr. Catalano.

For feet that are exposed to cold and dampness for a prolonged period, soak them in warm water, avoiding hot water or direct heat.

Soaking them in warm water will allow the feet to regain their normal temperature gradually.

Successful PV Alumna DC Fontana Remembered as a Pioneer for Women

n Monday December 2, screenwriter and PV alumna Dorothy Catherine “DC” Fontana passed away at age 80. The incredibly successful writer was most known as a pioneer for women in entertainment, especially in the science fiction

genre.

Fontana was raised in Totowa and graduated from Passaic Valley in 1957. Just three years after graduating, she joined the Writers Guild of America.

Fontana faced several struggles as a female writer during the time period. She used her initials “DC” so people could not identify her gender, considering the male dominated industry’s prejudices.

Fontana became the first female on the Star Trek writing staff. Fontana quickly became known for her work fleshing out the famous Spock character and his Vulcan background. She wrote several famous episodes for Star Trek: The Original Series including 1963’s “Journey to Babel”, worked as a writer and associate producer of Star Trek: The Animated Series, and co-wrote the pilot that launched Stark Trek: The Next Generation with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Though she is most remembered for her Star Trek work, Fontana’s career includes

over 50 writing credits for several of television’s most famous and influential programs.

Fontana not only revolutionized Star Trek, but the industry itself. Fontana received several notable nominations, such as the Writers’ Guild of America Award for Television: Episodic Drama in 1970 and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1988.

Passaic Valley had the pleasure of welcoming Fontana back as a guest speaker for media and theater classes. She spoke of how she became such a successful woman and the people that helped her along the way.

“It was pretty special to have someone like her, a PV alum, come back and take the time to talk to all of the media students about the industry,” said Billy Pinckney ‘20. “She had a great career in the field and it was a pleasure to listen to her talk about her experiences.”

In addition to her incredible story, Fontana made an impact with her personality as well. “She was just such a lovely person, so accomplished yet so humble,” said Teacher of Broadcasting Mrs. Stephanie Roberts.

Fontana will be missed by all and her accomplishments will never be forgotten. Passaic Valley is proud to have had her as a student and alumna.

Woodland Park Firefighters Graduate from Passaic Co. Public Safety Academy

he Woodland Park Fire Department had four firefighters graduate from the Passaic County Community College Public Safety Academy.

Charles Derrot, Thomas Ficcara, James Mulroony and Steven Spies all completed the Firefighter 1 program.

Originally located at the Passaic County Vocational and Technical High School in Wayne, the Academy at PCCC was designed through a combined effort of the College’s Board of Trustees and the guidance of College President Steve Rose and the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The $8.5 million state-of-the-art facility houses both the fire and EMS programs offered.

The facility opened in 2000 and has been growing steadily since.​

PV Utilizes Social Media to Expand Community Outreach

By Kassidy Fraser n recent years, PV has increased its focus on strengthening their social media presence to evolve with advancing technology. The various public relations platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, The Valley Echo, and PVTV) now work in concert to disseminate news and information about the things happening in the Hornet world.

Administration sees social media as a crucial aspect of building a positive brand for the school. “I think it is important that people understand what our image is, what we stand for, and a little bit more about the pride and tradition,” says Superintendent Dr. JoAnn Cardillo.

The Passaic Valley Communications Team coordinates the messages disseminated through the various platforms at their disposal. Faculty and staff discuss how to promote PV’s success with the school’s content creators from the Valley Echo, PVTV, Yearbook, and social media. Through weekly meetings, the team strategizes what news to cover, how best to cover it, and which

medium is most appropriate to cover it.

PV’s various platforms share news around the community, sports scores and updates, student and faculty successes, and updates for parents on important events. In addition to their media platforms, PV also works with three local print magazines: Passaic Valley Life, Little Falls Magazine, and OurTownTotowa.

Rae Allex, the Social Media Manager, took over PV’s social media platforms in September 2018. Since her introduction, PV’s social media presence and following greatly increased.

With more and more people getting their news through their personal devices, “Everyone is on social media,” said Allex. “So the news coming right to their screens is super important.”

The school promotes their social media through live links to each platform at the bottom of all the emails they send. They also plan to create posters to make more people aware of how to stay connected. They are doing their best to get the word out there to show everyone why PV is an excellent choice for children in the community to attend.

oodland Park distributed 30 turkeys and the fixings to local families this past Thanksgiving.

The Borough sends its thanks to Fairway Market, who generously donates turkeys every year to the collection drive.

Thanks to Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Pillari and each of the schools.

The food collection was coordinated by the Memorial School Student Council, Charles Olbon School, and Beatrice Gilmore School together with donations from generous families of Woodland Park.

Blue Crest Recovery Center also donated a $20 ShopRite gift card for each bag to help families with other items they might need.

At Memorial School, students assembled 30 full Thanksgiving dinner bags to go with the turkey and gift card. The remaining donations, after filling the

Wayne Valley High School Students Launch Anti-Vaping Campaign

More people are dying from illnesses related to vaping. Vitamin E acetate, a chemical used as an additive or a thickening substance in some vaping products, could be to blame.

Evidence is piling up that shows vitamin E acetate could be responsible for an outbreak of vaping-related illnesses that has killed 54 people and made more than 2,500 others sick, the Washington Post reported.

Vaping-related illnesses and deaths are becoming an epidemic in the United States, as more people, especially teenagers and people in their early-20s, use e-cigarettes and vaping products. One Wayne family is trying to curb the vaping epidemic by telling their peers

Alexa and Tyler Maher have launched a website, vapefreeworld.org to educate people about the dangers of vaping. The site includes news articles and videos about the dangers of vaping, a spot for signing a petition to end vaping, and a place where people can share stories about their experiences regarding the dangers of vaping.

People can also make donations through the site which will go toward research on lung-related illnesses and popcorn lung, a condition that damage small airwaves in the lungs and gives people shortness of breath.

Bracelets supporting the anti-vaping campaign may also be purchased through the site for $5.

Alexa and Tyler Maher, 16 and 14, are a junior and a freshman at Wayne Valley High School.

“Nothing positive can come from vaping,” said Alexa’s and Tyler’s father Dr. Ryan Maher, who helped them spearhead the campaign. “Kids who use e-cigarettes could possibly be inhaling something worse than nicotine.”

Alexa and Tyler Maher are spreading the word about their campaign at Wayne Valley where they are selling wristbands to support ending vaping. In the first week of launching vapefreeworld.org, they received 91 signatures for the cause.

The Washington Post reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found vitamin E acetate in 48 out of 52 patients who had become sick or died of lung injuries. No vitamin E acetate was found in lung fluids of 99 healthy people in a comparison study, according to the Post’s article. These people, according to the article, either only vaped nicotine, smoked only cigarettes, or have never smoked.

“Some people my age think vaping is a fun thing to do, but it’s not,” said Alexa Maher. “It’s dangerous.”

Alexa and Tyler Maher are also considering the possibility of starting a club at their high school to continue to raise awareness. Already actively involved in their high school community, starting a club would be another way to work with their peers and get the word out.

Tyler has played on Wayne travel baseball teams and is currently training for the Wayne Valley High School baseball team.

He is part of the Future Business Leaders of America Club. Alexa is on the Competition Cheer cheerleading team and is also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America Club.

They also plan to get other schools involved their campaign in the future and hope to one day travel to other communities in New Jersey to spread awareness.

he Woodland Park Board of Education recently saluted two outgoing members who finished their terms at the end of 2019 - Dina Bargiel and Dr. Mark Salemi, who both have served for over nine years. Their fellow board members and Superintendent Dr. Michele Pillari lauding both trustees for their dedication to the students of town and successes in moving the district forward. Dr. Pillari noted that Dr. Salemi and Mrs. Bargiel were “always, always looking out for the best interests of the children.” The pair are the last two original board members who were serving from when Dr. Pillari joined the district. “We have accomplished everything that we set out to do six years ago,” she said.​

Superintendent Introduces the New Security Team

n the first day of school, Superintendent Dr. JoAnn Cardillo introduced the Security Team for the 2019-2020 school year to students and staff. The team includes both fresh and familiar faces taking up the charge of keeping our facility safe. The team includes Dale Carriker, Anthony Pacelli, Kevin Nendze, Eric Hablitz, and James Bush.

The team has grown from its inception last year. It is made up of six retired officers who come from law enforcement agencies to monitor hallways, supervise traffic duty, and patrol during the evenings. In addition to the team, two Resource Officers from the Little Falls Police Department (occassionally Totowa and Woodland Park) are stationed within the school daily.

“It started with just the two of us: retired police officers like myself and Dale

“We changed some things, such as traffic patterns. There are cones now because people were passing vehicles that were discharging students to come in.”

In the end, this Security Team strives for one very important thing. “Our main goal for the school, in regard to safety, is everybody being able to come to this school to teach and learn in a safe environment,” said Superintendent Dr. JoAnn Cardillo. “[Students should] be able to concentrate on the things that we need to do, so that the Security Team focuses on the things that they need to do.”

The Woodland Park Police Department has brought back law enforcement led education in the local school district. Officers Omaira Carino and Derrick Morrison recently underwent training to become LEAD program instructors. They were recently recognized at a LEAD dinner gala with others that trained throughout the region.

LEAD - Law Enforcement Against Drugs - is a new program, similar to now defunct DARE program. In addition to the classroom elements, the LEAD program includes on-the-street services as well, including sensitivity training for officers in how

to deal with addicts. LEAD is the only K-12 proven-evidence based curricula taught in the U.S. by police officers and educators.

Starting in January, Officer Carino will launch the 10-week K-8 Too Good for Drugs curricula for fourth grade students at Beatrice Gilmore School and Officer Morrison will run the program for eighth grade students at Memorial Middle School. Both are eager to share what they have learned with the students.

Too Good for Drugs puts social and emotional learning to work through fun and interactive lessons, building the self-confidence young people need to make healthy choices and achieve success. Lessons focus on goal setting, decision-making, anger management, conflict resolution, peer-pressure refusal and more. The lessons let students learn, practice and master these essential life skills.​

Woodland Park STRIVE Dominates at Ethics Bowl

he 8th Grade STRIVE class from Memorial Middle School traveled to Ringwood to participate in the county’s first ever Ethics Bowl. The students partnered up with peers from different towns to discuss and present ethical dilemmas such as self-automated driving cars, stolen bicycles, and the electoral college. Yastika Singh and her team placed third, while Alex Limone

and his team won second. Kaitlyn Amanullah and her teammates made a very convincing argument and placed first. Fellow STRIVE students Nick Raguseo, Nick Salemi, Scott Nayda, and Montana Moraktan also participated in the event. The STRIVE team also competed in county-wide Kahoot Bowl. Yastika Singh, Kaitlyn Amanullah and Montana Moraktan were on a team which came in third place, out of eight schools.

I Remember Dad - Chapter 3

So Proud the Airman

By Richard Mabey Jr. Deeply etched in the heart of America, are the sacrifices made by the U. S. veterans of the Second World War. Sadly, the number of living veterans of World War II has been dramatically decreased in most recent years. Many of their stories, their remembrances, their heart-felt sacrifices will never be known to us.

For a multitude of reasons, many of the veterans of the Second World War spoke very little of the horrors that they endured to defend the honored principles of democracy and freedom. Many of the World War II soldiers returning to America’s shores, simply wanted to forget the nightmares of the war. Many were truly modest of their selfless and heroic deeds. And, for many others, what they endured was simply too painful to talk about.

My Dad was a veteran of the Second World War. He served at Hickam Air Field, right next to Pearl Harbor. My father served in the Seventh Army Air Corps, which was the precursor to today’s Seventh Air Force. Dad was one of many, many service men who were sent to clean up the disastrous results of man’s inhumanity to man.

The painful memory of Pearl Harbor deeply haunted the good people of Hawaii. Dad would often tell me about the incredible stress that the men of the Seventh Army Air Corps endured, always anticipating another catastrophic attack from the Japanese.

I remember those years, when I was in grade school. After supper, I would be

With each condensed chapter of “I Remember Dad” I try to bring a bit of the flavor and culture of my Dad’s generation, that of the men and women who grew up in the Great Depression and survived the sacrifices of World War II in their time of coming of age.

playing on the floor with my Lincoln Logs or building a car model. From time to time, Dad would be looking at his old photo album of pictures of his years of service at Hickam Air Field. Sometimes, I would look up to my beloved father and see an expression of sadness befall upon his face. I remember one time, I’m pretty sure that it was when I was in the third grade, that I saw tears fall from my Dad’s eyes as he looked at the pages of his photos from his days in the Seventh Army Air Corps.

Dad never talked much about his time of service in the Army Air Corps. In recent years, I have done some research about the Seventh Army Air Corps’ role in the Second World War. I was amazed and justifiably proud of my dear father. The United States was very much concerned about Japan assaulting Hawaii with another all-out attack.

One of my deepest regrets is that I never told my father just how proud I was of him for serving in World War II. And, it saddens me deeply to admit that I never really thanked my Dad for defending America, at a time when he was just a young man.

Although my father and I were very close and shared many common interests, I never simply said thank you to my father for his great sacrifice. I truly wish I had.

In 2020, there will be many festivals to explore. The city is a cultural hub with music, theater, dance and food events throughout the year. While experiencing the festivities, it is also an opportune time to take a step back and enjoy Chapultepec Park.

Brazil One of Abbamonte’s favorite waterfalls is Iguazu Falls located on the border of Brazil and Argentina. While Iguazu Falls might be well known, the falls themselves are truly unique. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls that stretch over approximately 1.68 miles. The Devil’s Throat is the tallest fall with a drop of more than 262 feet.

While traveling internationally can be fun and exhilarating, there are also places throughout the United States that offer memorable activities: Scottsdale, Arizona If you enjoy being outdoors, Scottsdale is an ideal place to visit.
