Caldwell Teen Creates Little Free Libraries for Eagle Scout Project
T
By Dawn M Chiossi here’s something intriguing at Caldwell’s Pollinator Garden, Short Hills’ Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, Essex County’s Environmental Center, and Montclair’s Van Vleck House and Gardens. When people see the four small, wooden boxes that invite book lovers to take a book and return a book, they have West Caldwell resident, 17-year-old James Stevens to thank for it. Promoting book sharing within communities, these Little Free Libraries, as they are called, was the result of Stevens’ Eagle Scout project for West Caldwell’s Boy Scout Troop 6. Stevens has been involved with Troop 6 since 2008, since Cub Scouts. Since 1912, the rank of Eagle Scout is a prestigious one. It is a milestone accomplishment recognized across the country and even the world. To achieve this rank, a scout must complete an Eagle Scout project. Serving several purposes, the project gives the scout an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, to utilize a myriad of management and organizational skills, and to provide empowerment. The end result of their efforts is a project that benefits the community. After a tremendous amount of time, energy, and hard work, the Little Free Libraries were installed in early April, ready for National Children’s Book Week. Similar to newspaper public display boxes, Little Free Library Books are displayed in waterproof wooden boxes with glass doors inviting others to “take a book, return a
book.” Generally, these libraries are located in various locations that have lots of foot traffic and people passing by. Founded in 2009, in Hudson, WI, the Little Free Library non-profit organization had one thing in mind; to share the love of reading and community by fostering book exchanges all around the world. Great for adults and children alike, Little Free Libraries is an innovative idea that inspires others to read and share a particular interest with others. They urge people to reach out, to talk, discuss, and get to know others through books. For Stevens, creating Little Free Libraries for his Eagle Scout project was an easy choice. An avid reader since he was little, Stevens relates that he came up with the idea of creating Little Free Libraries because he was concerned about literacy, especially in children. For this Caldwell teen, books open up a whole new world through imagination, stimulating curiosity, and ultimately fueling ambition. For children, being exposed to books-- long before they begin school- --is the key. “I’ve always loved to read,” Stevens shares. “I want to encourage reading especially in young people. Literature greatly helps them.” Being particularly passionate about nature and the environment, Stevens stocked the various libraries with books on environmental literature. These are books that appreciate the natural world, people’s place in it, and how it affects future generations. “In Scouts, we did a lot of continued on page 3

Eagle Scout Project... continued from page 2 hiking and camping. I’ve always been surrounded by nature. I spent maybe about 100 nights camping in a tent, so far,” he quips. For his stock, Stevens chose nature-related books as well as plants on the ecosystem, gardens, butterflies, and more. This includes The Encyclopedia of Butterflies, a favorite of his. Taking an active leadership role, Stevens very much likened his Eagle Scout project to running a small business that took “incredible hours.” After deciding on the locations for his Little Free Libraries, he had to deal with the details where he could legally and safely install them. Once all that was accomplished, he had to identify people to be Stewards for the libraries. (These are caretakers of sorts.), he had to build them and register the libraries. (When registering, entrepreneurs gain access to a network of support and benefits, including an official charter sign and charter number). Stevens also had to build support for his idea through networking and social media. At last, then Little Free Library entrepreneurs could add their library to the world map online and have a Grand Opening celebration if they wish. Stevens did not, due
to the long installation process. Along the way, Stevens found that many people were kindred spirits ready to help him in his quest. Among them were the Stewards he chose to man his Little Free Libraries. Also, the many workers that helped him with the construction that took “over 168 man-hours.” When asked what the most challenging part of the project was, he states that it was all of the networking and navigating he had to do to get the project approved. It was something he wouldn’t have any other way. “All of that communication was the most rewarding in the end,” he asserts. “I met so many people doing this project, I learned so much in talking to them. They were just incredible. I want to thank them all.” Looking back on all the hard work, man-hours, and challenges that he went through to get his project off the ground, Stevens asserts the payoff is definitely is the kids enjoying the books and libraries. “I received an email from one of the workers from the Environmental Center shortly after the installation of the Little Free Library in April with a picture of children enjoying the project,” he shares. “It’s so rewarding.”

What Does It Mean to be an American?
EDITORIAL &
I
By Connie Schultz t was a wonderful birthday dinner, the kind we friends have come to expect whenever we arrive to celebrate the person who is about to blow out the candles. We leave feeling lucky to be alive, every last one of us. This dinner, however, took an interesting turn after the guest of honor broke character and raised her hand to silence us. This is not her practice. She had a question. What does it mean, to each of us, to be an American? We were about a dozen women, all of us over 50, sitting around her dining room table in the city of Cleveland. Our abrupt silence was unusual, not counting the times we have bowed our heads together in prayer, ever so briefly. We are used to one another and the laughter we bring to any room in which we are gathered. And yet here we were, suddenly quiet and perhaps a bit sullen as we mulled the issue at hand. Who are we now, as Americans? Implicit in the question is the acknowledgment that we are no longer who we used to be. If age has anything to do with it, it›s only in the depth and breadth of our experience, which we can›t ignore. We›ve never lived in a time such as this. Watergate feels so manageable now, a scary diagnosis with a positive outcome. Life with Donald Trump is triage, and no one has the necessary training to predict our odds. One by one, we shared our thoughts. Each of us has our own definitions of citizenship and patriotism, but a universal theme unspooled. We feel differently about America, and our role in it. We are not an insulated group. Four in attendance are members of the LGBTQ community, with long memories of lives,

Ben Shapiro that the world is filled with enemies. We were reminded of that unfortunate fact this week when President Trump withdrew an apparently secret invitation to the Taliban to visit Camp David. The Taliban was, is and will remain an Islamic terror group; it has continuously sought the murder of American soldiers and citizens for two decades. Why would the Trump administration think it a good idea to sign an agreement with radicals who seek to overthrow the administration of Afghanistan, support terrorism and despise the United States? Do members of the administration truly believe that any agreement signed by the Taliban will be binding? The answer, of course, is no. That›s why the talks fell apart, according to The New York Times -- a response from inside the administration in the aftermath of a terror attack on American soldiers this week, a recognition of the obvious. The problem, of course, is that continued on page 6

What Does It Mean... continued from page 4 These small snapshots don›t begin to describe all the living we had done before we sat down at that table at that moment. Every woman has her stories, and isn›t it a shame not everyone knows that? Defining ourselves as Americans requires a distancing from those who think their residency-at-birth was an act of divine intervention. We have no control over where we are born, and to credit God for our geography is to cast doubt on his motives for everyone else. We are lucky, perhaps, but not the chosen. That evening, we couldn›t talk about being Americans without veering into a discussion about what it means to be a patriot. Knowing the words to the Pledge of Allegiance and flying an American flag on Independence Day is showmanship, not stewardship. If we define activism as a refusal to sit on the sidelines,
then so many women of my generation have become activists in ways they never thought they would be. They refuse to be invisible when so many want us to believe our time has passed. They speak up at family gatherings and refuse to apologize for the awkward silence. They write letters to editors and share their views on social media, and show up for one another when any one of them is under attack. One of my closest friends, who has spent much of her life keeping the peace, now calls her Republican U.S. senator almost daily to demand that he stand up to Trump›s racism and violent rhetoric. She provides her name and address, and is never insulting or rude. When a live voice answers the phone, she assures the staffer that her outrage is directed at the senator because he is the one selected to serve the American people, and he is letting his country down. On that night, at that birthday dinner, we talked about
all of this, and so much more, filled with hope no matter what. That›s what happens when women gather. We draw strength from one another, and then we go back out into the world, for the world. Isn’t it a shame not everyone knows that? Connie Schultz is a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and professional in residence at Kent State University’s school of journalism. She is the author of two non-fiction books, including “...and His Lovely Wife,” which chronicled the successful race of her husband, Sherrod Brown, for the U.S. Senate. withdrawal is followed by peace and security. All of which means that American troops are likely to remain in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. Few politicians will be bold enough to simply state that truth. After all, when John McCain said as much in 2008, he was roundly mocked by Barack Obama -- the same Obama who escalated the war in Afghanistan and retained thousands of troops there, despite promising withdrawal repeatedly. But our politicians should be brave enough to recognize that a weaker America on the world stage means a more vulnerable America at home. If we didn›t learn that lesson on 9/11,
we›re bound to repeat it. Ben Shapiro, 35, is a graduate of UCLA and Harvard Law School, host of “The Ben Shapiro Show” and editor-in-chief of DailyWire.com. Did We Learn the Lesson... continued from page 4 there are no easy solutions when it comes to foreign policy in the worst parts of the world. Everyone of good heart wants American soldiers out of Afghanistan and home. But how many Americans are willing to risk the increase in terrorism likely to follow such a withdrawal? So long as we remember 9/11, the answer will be: very few. Now, perhaps we should withdraw from Afghanistan. Perhaps the withdrawal is worth the risk. But American history isn›t replete with circumstances in which precipitous

Financial Literacy is Now Mandated Daily for East Orange Pre K & Elementary School Students
T
By Elise Phillips Margulis he 2019-2020 academic year is underway, and East Orange’s preschool and elementary school students are studying financial literacy daily as a core subject. East Orange is the first school district in New Jersey to adopt a wealth literacy curriculum. The new mandate extends the prior middle school finance education to younger students. The WealthRise program was designed by BlackFem, a non-profit organization that creates and implements wealth literacy in school districts across the United States. District leaders and BlackFem collaborated on a customized curriculum and set learning goals. BlackFem then provided intensive training for the teachers over the summer. Parents are also trained. Many of the parents have multiple jobs so BlackFem utilizes online and recorded information to ensure that they receive their own financial literacy education. The “Response to Intervention” part of the curriculum helps teachers to educate
the students about social justice, cultural issues and real-world applications of financial literacy. Chloe McKenzie, founder and CEO of BlackFem, reported that “the program really resonates with the students. BlackFem uses homework completion, tardy statuses and absentee rates to calculate each student’s ‘credit’ score.” “The students learn to advocate for themselves through role playing,” she added. One child plays the lender and the other is a borrower. If the lender says something discriminatory, the borrower is taught how to handle the situation. Their scores indicate how well the program is going. The scores also motivate students to attend class. The teachers and students in other districts both rate the program with high satisfaction. According to Anita Champagne, Assistant Superintendent of East Orange School District, “The first initial workshop with teachers, we found the elementary teachers in particular were enthused to introduce financial literacy to grades 1-2.” Champagne continued, “With the fi-
nancial literary push in both elementary and middle school systems here in N.J., we believe the BlackFem program is going to be even more influential in developing a growth mindset for our students, teachers and parents on financial wellness.”

Financial Literacy... continued from page 7 is needed, if any behavioral reinforcement is necessary and/or if more teaching modules should be added. The pilot program began five years ago. There are programs in twelve states that follow the model. Eleven other cities and a state have approached McKenzie to participate so BlackFem will be setting up a GoFundMe to help finance those programs. McKenzie worked for J.P. Morgan and then taught elementary school. While teaching in an inner city where 75 percent of her students lived in public housing, she realized that underserved children need to be educated in financial matters like credit cards, mortgages, auto loans and more at a young age. BlackFem’s mission is to “transform school-based learning so that girls of color in underserved communities are empowered with skills, habits, and resources to build and sustain wealth.” Boys of color also benefit from BlackFem because they are in the classrooms with the girls. McKenzie discovered that, “Women of color have a medium net worth of $5.00. Only through social justice and wealth management can people advance them-

selves.” She added that her research shows that “non-profit foundations headed by women of color are the most underfunded.” McKenzie also noted that children of color are more likely to wind up in special education classes so the special education classes receive financial training as well. Her other company, On A Wealth Kick, LLC “helps individuals and institutions understand their role in closing the wealth gap. It offers institutional advising, speaking engagements, community organizing, and personal financial coaching.” Through On A Wealth Kick, McKenzie “advises institutions and Fortune 500 companies on how to fight for wealth justice through wealth literacy and how to attract and retain new and more diverse clientele demographics through more accessible and inclusive financial practices.” She also conducts financial workshops for women. On a personal note, McKenzie has always been conscious of the living conditions of people with less money while she was helping her wealthy JP Morgan clients increase their net worth. She volunteered as a financial counselor at a homeless shelter on weekends and
was also a member of the Volunteer Analyst/Association Group helping JP Morgan employees to give back to the community. McKenzie obtained a graduate certificate in financial planning and services to learn how to set up and operate BlackFem. She recently earned her Masters degree in Public Administration and was named in Investment News Magazine’s 40 People under 40. This year she will be on a national speaking tour telling the country about

Bathrooms Foster Leadership at Wyoming Elementary School
By Evan Wechman t the beginning of the school year, some students will be inspired by their favorite subjects such as Music or Math. This coming year, at Wyoming Elementary School, Principal Kristin Mueller is hoping students find inspiration even in the unlikeliest of places. This past summer, with the school bathrooms needing an upgrade, Mueller thought the idea of having beautifully painted quotes along with terrific art work in such common spaces would be of great benefit to the students. She felt it would go hand in hand with the schools’ message of “Empowering Student Leaders,” vision which was introduced the previous year. “The look of a school has a real impact on mood, motivation, and behavior,” states the principal, and she thought conveying such messages on the walls in the six student bathrooms would be a positive step. This move kind of separates Mueller apart from other school principals who seek to beautify common areas such as hallways and libraries, but neglect the much frequented bathrooms. Mueller, however, saw no reason to skip these spaces and sought to strengthen her goal of fostering leadership in every nook and cranny in the school.
The beautification of the bathrooms project contains quotes from various leaders throughout the past decades, each one powerful enough to motivate the children. However, it helped come to fruition from an unlikely source, the late author Stephen Covey. Covey reached fame for his most popular book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, but he also wrote about fostering leadership in young students. In 2008, Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, was published which contained beautifully illustrated stories that spread positive messages that are still relevant today. Some of the great things that Covey stressed for young students was to have a plan, prioritize, take initiative, and most important of all, to believe in yourself. Principal Mueller thought that these messages were a good complement to the “Leader in Me,” project that has been taking place in other elementary schools throughout the U.S. based on Covey’s principles. Mueller introduced this same model last year in an effort to “empower students with leadership and other skills.” She is hoping that the beautiful quotes and artistry assist students in becoming tomorrow’s leaders. One quote that stands out which was painted by MHS senior Betty Zheng in the top
floor boy’s bathroom reads “all our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” Mueller also wanted to acknowledge the other students who volunteered their time, talents, and efforts to complete the project. She also mentioned that Natalie Ho, Michelle Qiu, and Annie Tan all made her very proud.
All the messages in the bathrooms are inspiring but Mueller does have a favorite. It reads: “mirror, mirror on the wall, there’s a leader in us all.” She elaborates that “this quote is one of my favorites especially as students look into the mirror and learn that there truly is a leader in all of us no matter what age we are.

Car Care Tips for Winter from Livingston Tire Company
t Livingston Tire Company we are concerned about safe driving all year long. We know that the cold winter months are especially hard on cars and their components. Use this as your guide on what to be concerned about. You will be glad you did. It may keep you from being stranded somewhere. Tires are very important. Without deep tread your vehicle will not have adequate traction on ice or snow. This goes for SUV’s and trucks, not just cars. All LIGHTS should be checked since there are more night hours then daylight during the winter months. Dusk is one of the most difficult times to drive, and in addition to people not being use to the change in light at dusk, it is more difficult to see the road and the cars at that time. Wiper blades should be in good condition for ice and snow removal, and WASHER FLUID must be the right dilution, so it doesn’t freeze. Have you ever been stuck in a snow storm and have the wipers not act properly or the windshield washer fluid be low? That is not a good situation to be in. Batteriesare especially vulnerable in the

cold. A battery will not deliver it’s full power when cold, so make sure it tests good and isn’t more than 4 years old. Other than these specifics, the rest of the vehicles systems like BRAKES, and SUSPENSION should also be checked not only in the winter, but for all year round. Most importantly, use common sense. If your car looks, feels or drives different it’s time to have it looked at ASAP at a reliable service center. Livingston Tire Company, conveniently located at 56 E. Northfield Road in Livingston, has been servicing cars and selling tires for more than half a century. They are the only AAA Approved Auto Repair Center in Livingston, and pride themselves on Service, Quality and Value. They have hundreds of sizes of tires, including snow tires, in stock. They are concerned about making sure their customers are safe and prepared year round. If you have any questions about your car being safe or any other car concerns call them at 973-533-0101 and they will be happy to help.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants. After careful examination, Dr. Chiu decided she would need very extensive bone repair in her sinuses, done in stages to allow her to have implants placed. This could take two years, because she is already wearing a removable denture. It interferes with the normal bone repair process in the other areas of her upper jaw. That’s why planning ahead is crucial when it comes to a treatment of an implant-supported fixed bridge, especially before the teeth are extracted. Often times, a lot of the “prep” work is done while a couple of teeth remain in the mouth to hold up a fixed temporary appliance. This allows for a faster healing time and more optimal placement of implants to support a fixed bridge.
Come and visit Dr. Chiu, who has placed and restored implant-supported fixed and removable prosthesis for many years. Your comfort and convenience are always Dr. Chiu’s top priorities. To know more about these procedures, please call (973) 377-0224. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have. The Morristown Festival of Books is Back
T
By Henry M. Holden he Morristown Festival of Books is an annual two-day event that takes place this year on October 11 and 12. According to Rachel Barry, Director of the Morristown Festival of Books, “The 6-year-old event is modeled after successful book festivals in other communities throughout the world. Each autumn, the festival brings together authors with readers and book lovers. The Festival is New Jersey’s premier book festival, celebrating the written word’s power to challenge, transport and transform.” Barry says the festival is growing each year. “We started with about 1,500 visitors six years ago and last year we hosted over 8,000.” The opening night is a ticketed Keynote Event featuring Preet Bharara who served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, Bharara joined the NYU School of Law faculty as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence. Bharara will speak on Friday evening at the Mayo Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm. Tickets will be available through the MPAC box office and on the festival website. Tickets are also available at the door on the night of the event, as availability allows. The Main Festival takes place all day on Saturday (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.), rain or shine. This year’s festival features more than 50 authors. Author selections featuring various genres are designed to appeal to a variety of ages and reading interests. “Authors will be speaking and answering questions in informal one-hour indoor sessions at five festival venues
throughout the day,” said Barry. “Immediately following his or her talk, you will have the opportunity to speak with your favorite authors and have your books personalized at the Author Signing Tent, on the Vail Mansion lawn.” These sessions are free, no tickets required; general seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be portable restrooms at the Vail Mansion lawn. “The Festival center is on the lawn in front of the historic Vail Mansion (110 South Street), where there is an Information Tent, a Book Tent selling copies of the visiting authors’ books, the Signing Tent where authors will greet visitors and sign books, and concession stands selling refreshments.” “This year’s closing event is an exciting interactive event called Pitchapalooza,” said Barry. “It’s like American Idol for books (only without Simon). Anyone with an idea for a book has the chance to pitch it to a panel of judges. But they get only one minute.” The hosts, Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry (a.k.a. The Book Doctors) team up with guest industry insiders to
form the judging panel. The Judges critique everything from idea to style to potential in the marketplace and much more. Whether potential authors pitch themselves, or simply listen to trained professionals critique each presentation, Pitchapaloozas are educational and entertaining for all. All attendees come away with concrete advice on how to improve their pitch as well as a greater understanding of the ins and outs of the publishing industry. At the end of each Pitchapalooza, the judges come together to pick a winner. That winner receives an introduction by Eckstut and Sterry to an agent or publisher who is appropriate for their work. The Festival audience will also have a chance to pick a winning pitch. That Audience Choice winner will be voted on by the audience and will receive a 30-minute phone consultation from Eckstut and Sterry (a $150 value). KidFest @ MFOB includes author talks, signings, and fun activities all day for children up to 12 years old. Additionally, concessions will be available in the KidFest outdoor area outside the Presbyterian Church Parish House at 65 South Street. Please note, the festival is not held on the Morristown Green. There are several public parking garages within walking distance of the Festival center. This is a casual event. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for cool weather. It is a rain or shine event, so please bring an umbrella if the day’s weather warrants it. For more information and a list of authors attending see: www.morristownbooks.org

Seton Hall Student to Present to College Radio Conference at University of Cambridge
eton Hall University senior and WSOU 89.5 FM news director Robert Towey will co-lead a hands-on workshop at the Alternatives 2019 International Student Radio Conference, hosted at the University of Cambridge in England. Towey, who was personally invited by the conference to participate as an instructor, is the only college student to teach a workshop at this worldwide gathering. All other workshops are led by faculty members and industry professionals. Titled “Going Beyond: The Art of the Interview,” this practical workshop explores strategies and ideas on how to get the best radio interviews in a variety of circumstances. The session will include field work in the city of Cambridge, England, as well as collaborative projects. Towey will draw on his experiences as an award-winning journalist and the dozens of news, sports, and music interviews he has done for WSOU. Joining Towey in facilitating the workshop is Lance Liguez, president of College Radio Day and faculty advisor to UTARadio.com at the University of Texas at Arlington. “I am excited to have the opportunity to speak at the Alternatives 2019 conference at the University of Cambridge, an event that will host an audience of radio educators and students from across the globe,” said Towey. “Many people are intimidated by the prospect of interviewing someone, but the right preparation and approach allows anyone to conduct a great interview.” For his workshop, Towey will discuss choosing the right questions to ask, the best ways to draw out meaningful and evocative responses from the interviewee, the importance of listening carefully while conducting an interview, and much more. Liguez will speak to participants about re-
cording techniques and properly using audio gear to tape interviews. “In addition to the classroom presentation, we will allow participants to employ our advice right away, as the workshop features an hour-long practice interview session where my co-presenter and I will be taking the audience into the streets of Cambridge,” noted Towey. “The students will conduct sample interviews with members of the community to hear their thoughts on the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. I am proud that my work at WSOU has given me the platform and background to teach this workshop and help others become better storytellers. It is a privilege to represent both WSOU and Seton Hall at Alternatives 2019.” Alternatives 2019 takes places August 14-16 at the historic Jesus College (est. 1496) at the University of Cambridge, England. The conference is an opportunity for campus radio makers from all over the world to come together to hear and share experiences and ideas. Participants come from Asia, Europe, North America, and continued on page 18

Millburn High School Senior Destined for School Board
J
By Colleen O’Brien amie Serruto, who turns 18 in October, presently is a 17-year-old senior at Millburn High School, a life-long resident of the Millburn community, a Class President for four years running, and will in all probability, take a seat at the table of the Millburn BOE in January. The BOE election is Tuesday, Nov. 5th, at polling places across Millburn Township. The term that Serruto aspires to is oneyear, running from January 2020 to Decem-
ber 2020. Serruto’s aspirations for the position include being able to show first-hand what it’s like to go through the school system from K-12. “I have lived here in Short Hills my entire life where the community has provided me with an outstanding education, and (now) getting involved (in this election) has allowed my passion for service to blossom.” Serruto added that he believes that “we are a stronger community when we are working for the betterment of everyone.”

Serruto believes that future high school seniors may want to follow in his footsteps “if they feel passionate and prepared.” He says that “this role is not for everyone.” But he believes that “A student’s perspective can be a very valuable contribution to the Board of Education.” Some experts would agree that students who have a say in their own governance are apt to become better citizens and workers, develop public speaking abilities as well as grow empathy, and respectfully question the status quo. For instance, Serruto was instrumental last year in extending the lunch break for the high school’s 1,500 students to 58 minutes. Serruto maintains that the extra time gave students more options, including ‘me’ time, one-on-one with teachers, and club gatherings. He also believes that after-school activities were freed up. How do we make sure the needs of school children are being met? One way is through the District’s budget. The District oversees approximately 5,000 students with an annual budget in excess of $93 million. Admittedly the budget is multi-faceted and breaks down into many categories. One of the recent focuses in the Millburn Township is addressing -- for high schoolers, what is the balance between intense study focus and recreational pursuits? The District is implementing ideas, according to Superintendent Dr. Christine Burton. They include a Zen room, Yoga, a “Peace Room,” therapy dogs once-a-month, and exam time snacks. Says Linda Randazo, school psychologist at MHS, “What if you fall short of the mark

you set for yourself? We are trying to make students understand that failure is a step to success.” After graduation Serruto intends “to be present in Millburn Township as much as humanly possible, and have a near perfect Board attendance.” For his college plans, he’s looking along the East Coast from DC to Northern NJ. Serruto is hoping to study Political Science and Public Administration. And after? “Hopefully find myself working in local government.” For more information, contact Jamie Serruto by emailing jserruto17@gmail.com.

hough women may notice various signs and symptoms that could be indicative of breast cancer, breast pain is generally not one of them. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® notes that there are various harmless causes of breast pain, such as puberty, menstruation and child birth, but that breast pain is not
commonly a symptom of cancer. However, in rare instances breast pain may correlate with cancer. For example, breast tumors may cause pain, but cancerous tumors are not generally reported as painful. Though it may not be linked to breast cancer, breast pain should still be reported to a physician immediately, advises the NBCF.

Millburn Resident Wins Award for Activism
A
By Jason Cohen Millburn resident was recently recognized for his dedication to helping others and giving back. On Aug. 15, Ranen Miao, 18, a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis, received the Young Heroes Award at the National Liberty Museum (NLM) in Philadelphia. He was one of 13 recipients and three from New Jersey. “It was such an honor to be seen as a community leader,” Miao said. The Young Heroes Award recognizes young people who have taken action to make positive social change in their schools and communities. Each year the NLM looks for young people who have engaged in civic activities; promoted respectful resolutions to conflict; advocated for diversity and inclusive environments for everyone; and taken leadership roles in their school or community. All winners receive recognition at an awards ceremony at the Museum. Their stories are featured for one year in a museum exhibit. They receive a certificate of achievement, medallion and other gifts. They may also have the opportunity to represent this program at future museum
events. Miao told the Millburn News he did not know about the award until the museum emailed him. It turns out his government teacher Brian Raymond nominated him. “I’m really grateful for him,” he remarked. Miao was the president of Millburn High School’s Key Club and was one of 12 members of the USA Debate Team. He was an officer for his school’s High School Democrats of America club, peer leaders program, Debate team, Make A Wish club and edited for his school newspaper. He also organized food drives, 4k races for charity and helped run a program where youths assisted seniors with shoveling snow for them. Furthermore, he was one of two New Jersey representatives who were selected to participate in the 57th annual USSYP Washington Week in March. He was chosen from among the state’s top student leaders to be part of the 104 national student delegations who also each received a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate study. “Our family has always valued community service and service in general, which is why I think I became more passionate and
devoted to giving back to my community,” he explained. The youngster is passionate about politics and activism and feels they are both important because they involve helping people. “I don’t think you need to flaunt community service because the goal of it is giving back,” Miao said. In addition to receiving the Young Heroes Award, he was also bestowed with the
Spark Award for Innovation, Creativity, Perseverance and Respect. This was created in memory of Alan Holmes Johnson-McNutt, who was the manager of outreach for the National Liberty Museum. The award was given to him by Johnson-McNutt’s parents, Gary and Debbie Johnson-McNutt. He chatted with his family and learned about the selfless person their son was. “I felt very honored that his family chose me,” he said.

One Man Can Make a Difference in Many Lives
ichael Kambourakis, the owner of Terzako Furs on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell recently spoke at the United Nations. He was invited as a humanitarian and discussed his work in the Dominican Republic with the help of private funding. For many years Mike was concerned about a small area that had been severely damaged due to a hurricane. He told the United Nations how he worked to build a clinic in the Dominican Republic by raising money and actually being almost the general contractor on the job. After the Clinic was built, he was responsible for raising the funds needed to build medical housing on the premises to allow doctors from the United States availability to go down to the clinic and take care of patients for brief periods of time. An important part of the presentation was how one can accomplish more and faster privately, rather than going through time prolonged by federal government approvals. In 5 years time, the clinic and dorms were completed. Mike’s fellow Rotarians helped with the fundraising and putting the finishing touches on the latest addition, an outdoor dining facility. The clinic has been in operation since its grand opening in November 2017. Many diabetes missions have taken place and the dental office is now complete. This whole project started when Mike heard about
the lack of clean water, school supplies and many other necessities in the Dominican Republic. He went there to see firsthand about the conditions. He decided he needed to help. That was the beginning of a labor of love which he continues and envisions even more. He is amazing and proves that one man can make a difference in many lives. Mike started this in a small way and began to collect items that he shipped or personally brought to the community. On his numerous trips to the Dominican Republic his luggage consisted of school supplies, clothing, tooth brushes, and medical supplies. He collected items from his clients, businesses in the area and numerous other places and shipped them personally to aid the people of the Dominican Republic. Since the nearest clinic for medical care was very far away, Mike came up with the idea to build a clinic. Mike is truly an inspiration. The United Nations heard about his unbelievable work, and asked him to speak there to inspire other individuals on how they can do their own projects to help people who are in dire need of the basic things in life. If you want to learn more about this project or how you can be of assistance you can look at www.dominicanreliefrelief.org.

18-Year-Old West Orange Teen Battles Cancer and is Featured in Stop & Shop Fundraiser
By Steve Sears ighteen-year-old West Orange resident Michael McCullom was four months from high school graduation and preparing to enter North Carolina’s Elon University in September when adversity struck: he was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma cancer. However, McCullom is turning this challenge into an opportunity to help others, serving for one year as a New Jersey Cancer Ambassador to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). He was also featured in a Stop & Shop fundraising campaign in September, which is known as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, to benefit MSK cancer research. “This is part of a chainwide initiative we call Help Cure Childhood Cancer. Stores in New York, New Jersey and southern Connecticut (199 stores total) will raise funds for MSK. The company’s other stores in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are raising funds for the Jimmy Fund,” says Stefanie Shuman, External Communications Manager of Stop & Shop. Customers had the opportunity to donate $1, $3 or $5 at checkout, with the proceeds benefiting Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Department of Pediatrics. Since 2001, Stop & Shop has raised more than $24 million to support pediatric cancer research at MSK. The goal in 2019 was to raise another 1.25 million dollars.

In addition to McCullom, there were three other ambassadors as part of the fundraiser. McCullom, an accomplished percussionist who was his high school’s marching band drum line captain, was also National Honor Society president, earned highest rank as a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, and is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America. His entrance to Elon University has been deferred to the 2020-21 school year. “When I was in the hospital,” says McCullom, “I ended up talking to a lot of people and making a lot of friends among the staff and patients there. Also, since I graduated this year, Sloan actually has a big graduation , so I was able to speak at the graduation for all the kids who had cancer.” “It was a full-blown graduation. Michael was asked to speak, and he was the only speaker at the graduation,” adds Lori McCullom, his mom. “Apparently they had a committee meeting and Michael’s name was chosen to be the speaker.” McCullom initially thought a small growth which appeared on his head was a cyst, and a dermatologist removed the growth, which eventually returned. The McCulloms then opted to visit a surgeon, still believing the continued on page 23

Climbing Beyond Cancer:
Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience
O
n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience. Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-
periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both
those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event. Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf
ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering. “I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab. Schwab a ttended an Epic Experience camp in May 2015. Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.” Schwab joined the
Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015. In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors. Schwab enjoys climbing at Randolph Climbing Center and thought it would be the perfect place to fundraise for Epic

Teen Battles Cancer... continued from page 22 growth was a cyst, and had it removed once more. When Michael returned to have his stitches removed, the doctors broke the news that Michael had a rare sarcoma. “When I first entered my battle with the cancer,” says McCullom, “I was like, ‘Let’s just take care of it.’ That’s what I entered thinking. ‘Let’s just deal with it and get it done.’” His perspective with the disease soon changed. “Going into it and experiencing how hard chemotherapy was, it made me want to help other people who also are going through this. I’m glad I was picked to be an ambassador because I’m motivated to help other people through this.” Kevin McCullom is Michael’s dad. “He’s in this battle; he’s dealing with the effects of chemotherapy, making him sick, all the awful stuff you hear about how chemotherapy can be. But he’s been able to look beyond what he’s been going through
– the pain and sickness – and see others and appreciate the kindness other people show.” “We were devastated (as a family),” says Lori. “It (the cancer) came from left field. So, we all had to lean on our faith. So basically, we were in shock, but we’re here to support Michael and make sure he has the strength to get through this.” The community has also rallied around the McCulloms. West Orange High School in the spring held an all-student-run vaudeville show to benefit MSK, and the ROTC held their first ever invitational and pooled their money together with the performing musical groups at the event, also donating to the institute. Michael, who completed his chemotherapy in August and is currently undergoing radiation treatment, states happily follow up scans and tests revealed no evidence of cancer, and his mom adds, “Faith is how we jumped the cancer hurdle.”

West Orange Resident, Centenary Student, Studies Shakespeare Studies Abroad
S
By Melissa A. Kay achel S. Bise, a student at Centenary University, had quite the time studying abroad at Oxford University in England this summer. Her experience was life-changing, educational, inspirational, and more than she imagined it could be. Bise is a college senior - an English major in the Secondary Education track. She looks forward to completing college and a future that is destined to be bright. She shares, “College, so far, is everything I’ve ever hoped for and more. Centenary is so special because of the support and opportunities. The professors have opened my eyes to different authors whom I now love, topics I never thought to research, and experiences I would never have had otherwise. Centenary professors challenge you to become your best, while leaving you space to grow into the most ideal version of yourself. I love teaching, and am very excited to start practicum (pre-student teaching) this semester. I am currently working on graduate school applications.” This summer, the West Orange student left the States for the Summer Shakespeare intensive at Oxford University which gave Bise the opportunity to learn more about the playwright and poet while attending indepth classes and exploring some fantastic places. Bise was in awe of her surroundings, from things to do and see and so on. “My favorite things were the shows and the different places I saw. I would walk every day to get to wherever I needed to, and on the way, saw the beautiful architecture and stopped in some interesting places. I also loved the New College campus because of how green and lovely it was. I took trips to several places during my time at Oxford, as well, including Windsor Castle, Bath, Stonehenge, the Isle of Wight, Cardiff (Wales), Cambridge, and Stratford-upon-Avon. I made an effort to visit every museum as part of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, as well as the schoolrooms and the MAD Museum. I also saw Taming of the Shrew at the Royal Shakespeare Company Theater (which inspired my final project!) and Pygmalion at the Attic Theatre, which is kind of a hidden gem. One of my most cherished memories will always be going to the New College Commemoration Ball. It only happens once every three years (so I was told) but it was amazing. The food was delicious, the lights were magical, and the atmosphere was wonderful in every possible way!” Since this was Bise’s second time studying abroad, she was prepared for what was
to come, not to say this experience wasn’t special. She met interesting people from all over the world and can now offer firsthand advice for those interesting in doing something similar. She advises, “Work hard and study hard, but leave time to enjoy the surroundings. I experienced many firsts during my time abroad (first opera, first time to Wales, first time to Stratford, first birthday without my family there, etc.). It will be scary at first, but everything will be okay. Make a list of everything you want to do, research the area and places you wish to visit, and plan!” Each day of the six-week program had its individuality, but Bise summed up her educational experience as such, “Every week, my course load consisted of reading two plays, writing a seven page paper on the topic of my choice, and reading critical and historic commentary. I spent about a day and a half reading and planning, then wrote my papers in the New College library over the course of five to eight hours. Working in the New College library was an experience on its own because it gave me the atmosphere I needed to produce a top paper. After the paper was written, I would let it sit until the next day when I would return to it to edit. The final project was a little more intense. I brought in some of my education background and designed a presentation and lesson focused on exploring the purpose for Shakespeare writing his female characters the way he does while bringing in elements of setting and how that relates to the text. It was interesting for both myself and my tutor.” As Patricia Mahaffey, Coordinator of Study Away and Internships at Centenary explains, “The study abroad experience allows students to understand and appreciate another culture while enhancing their confidence and independent thinking. Students make memories and friends that will last a lifetime. However, the most important outcome of studying abroad is the impact on career goals, marketable skills and employability. Employers look very favorably on a study abroad experience when evaluating the resumes of job candidates.” This study abroad program is one of Centenary Future U’s future-forward approach to higher education. Students are prepared for their future thanks to the rich resources the University provides. Naturally, Bise highly recommends the study abroad program for other students who are able to embark on a similar adventure. “I would absolutely recommend this program to everyone. It was one of the most
transformative experiences I have ever had abroad, and I wish I could go back!” As for what the future holds, Bise would like to become a professor with a focus on British literature. She hopes to become a published author and has a “secret proj-
ect” up her sleeve. For now, she’s applying to several doctoral programs this semester, and if not accepted, will get to work as a teacher upon graduating then return to school for her master’s degree.

Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter Consignment Shop in Verona Donates Proceeds to Shelter
H
By Elise Phillips Margulis ere’s a great excuse to go shopping. Five animal-loving women opened the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter Consignment Shop in Verona last July. Profits from sales go directly to the animal shelter. Elaine Lodato, Mia Bulken, Janice Dorting, Gloria Ferrara and Liz Garetano had run a consignment shop in Caldwell for over 25 years. When the building that housed their shop was sold they decided to relocate to Verona and to donate the proceeds to Mt Pleasant. They’ve amassed a lovely collection of donated clothing for adults and children, jewelry, bric-a-brac, shoes, purses, furniture, linens, tablecloths, large mirrors, mugs with animals on them, vintage tea pots, silver jewelry, lamps, other home goods and more. Fittingly, a corner of the shop offers Mt. Pleasant pet supplies like collars, leashes, bowls, doggy outfits, toys and more Approximately half of their inventory is donated new by shelter supporters and customers. The other half is very gently used consignment goods. The selection is quite unique in that they never know what will be donated and the merchandise varies. New things arrive daily. After six weeks, items are marked down to half price. One happy customer bought a Ralph Lauren raincoat for $8.00. Their prices are unbeatable. They carry Vera Bradley, real Coach products and other name brands. Once someone donated a piece of engraved gold jew-
elry thinking that it had no value. The consignment shop brought it to a jeweler and found out that it was 14 karat gold and it sold for $400. Dorting said they only accept items that are in very good condition. “We don’t buy anything that we wouldn’t wear personally.” She also promises “super bargains and treasures.” Prices start at $1.50 and go to $100. Dorting added, “It’s an adventure to browse in our shop and to find trea-

sures that are waiting to be discovered.” Items that don’t sell at half price are given to homeless shelters and a Facebook site that sells products at garage sales and gives the profits to several animal rescue groups. Lodato says that the store is “full of great merchandise that’s preowned and pre-loved. What is old is new again!” She added, “You never know what you’ll find here. You may find something very unexpected.” She recalled that a nun from Sparta who grew up in Caldwell brought her mother to the thrift shop and found a statue of the Madonna holding Baby Jesus. The nun, Sister Marie, wound up purchasing the statue for her convent. Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover has been caring for and finding homes for animals since 1972 when a group of Caldwell residents began the organization, merged with other rescue groups and ultimately built the current shelter. Mt. Pleasant is 100% funded by donations. Their threefold mission is to provide exception care for homeless animals; to promote spaying/neutering, microchipping and humane education; and to find permanent and loving homes for cats and dogs. The thrift shop is open Monday to Wednesday from noon to 4:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter Consignment Shop is located at 528 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona.
