Caldwell Woman’s Selfless Gesture Honors Lost Babies
O
By Jillian Risberg ne of her baby sisters died the year before Ellen Panza was born and that lifelong shattering emptiness for the sibling she never knew created a yearning to support other grieving families. “I am a person who has unfortunately suffered more than my share of personal loss. I decided to turn Ellen Panza my sadness into something that could benefit others,” says Panza, who almost three years ago connected with St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston and was directed to their corporate offices. NICU Helping Hands’ Angel Gown® Program provides comfort for bereaved families through the gift of a beautiful custom made gown for final photos and burial services. “I subsequently met Mary Doherty and Breanna Matloff from the Development Department, who arranged the delivery of the gowns to the NICU.” She is always looking for ways to help people and animals. “Essentially, I believe it’s all about paying it forward,” Panza says. According to the Caldwell woman, her sister was so small that she was buried in a christening gown. “I can’t imagine my late mother’s pain in needing to shop for something like that after just losing a child born sick,” says Panza. Once she had the idea, she turned to social media — by posting her desire to get involved on town group pages

and through word-of-mouth. NICU Helping Hands says there is no greater gift that can be given to a grieving family than affirming the importance of the life of their child through these gowns. According to Panza, when it comes to up-cycling, she collects wedding gowns for several months and then works with a seamstress who subsequently turns them into Angel Gowns. The gowns are either dropped off or she picks them up. She lost count as to how many. Panza calls both her parents her inspiration. “They cared for the unfortunate and taught me that
even the little things make a difference,“ Panza says. “I do what I do in their honor.” Although she never has contact with the families that benefit from her Angel Gowns, getting to be part of the process to create these gowns for the NICU babies at St. Barnabas is extra special and speaks to Panza’s heart. “I am always hopeful that my donation made their worlds an easier place based on their situation,” says the Caldwell woman. To follow her journey visit Facebook: Ellen Nicolette Panza and Instagram: @nikiusvi. To donate a wedding gown to Angel Gowns, email kiki001103@aol.com.

Brendan Tevlin’s Memory Lives on Through Lacrosse Festival Foundation
B
By Jerry Del Priore rendan Tevlin was a former lacrosse player at Seton Hall Prep and Livingston resident who was a model citizen, and always did his best to support his community. So much so that Tevlin proposed to his friends that they organize a pick-up lacrosse game during their summers home from college as a way to give back to worthy causes that were near and dear to his heart. But, tragically, on July 25, 2014, a gunman, in a senseless act of violence, randomly shot and killed the 19-year-old -- who was home for the summer after his first year at the University of Richmond in Virginia-- at a West Orange intersection. Stunned and beside themselves by what had happened, Tevlin’s friends and family came together and did what they could do to cope with the unexpected loss of the affable, respected young man loved by everyone, according to Mike Condon, Tevlin’s friend and Good Vibes & Easy Living Foundation board member. “It stopped everyone in their tracks,’’ Condon recollected. “No one knew what to think about what had happened.” Wanting to honor and remember Tevlin’s amazing, altruistic, loving spirit, his friends came together and brought the first lacrosse festivals to fruition, in Tevlin’s honor, just a month later. Condon said it helped some of his loved ones deal with the unfathomable atrocity. Presently, the festival has grown into more events since then and into the Good Vibes & Easy Living Foundation in 2017.
Good vibes and easy living was the mantra that helped guide the avid recreational surfer’s young, impactful life. Now, the foundation carries out Tevlin’s unyielding passion for service and raising funds for charitable endeavors in his heroic memory. Proceeds are donated to charities and organizations that best match his spirit, interests and unrelenting love of life. “To remember Brendan, and share good vibes,” Condon said of the motivation behind the lacrosse festival foundation. “What we decided to do is spread Brendan’s message. Out of something so dark, something so amazing came out of it. Brendan was all about giving back.” Condon said that a particular Tevlin saying still resonates with him and inspires him to do what he can to keep his friend’s memory alive and kicking each and every day. “Brendan used to say, ‘If the world would stop spinning today, would you be happy with what you have accomplished in your life?,’” Condon, 26, recalled. “It’s just about spreading that type of positivity. He truly lived by exactly that, doing good things for others. He was about the good vibes.” With the Good Vibes & Easy Living Festival approaching its seventh annual event, Condon said that people contact the organization on social media all the time, to inform them of how much Tevlin’s drive and dedication for good affected everyone, even people who never met him. “We have been able to keep Brendan’s spirit and message alive,” he said. “People reach out to us, saying how much Brendan’s message inspires them.”

Livingston High Alum Recalls Sportscasting Career, Serves Up Latest Book
A
By Megan Roche nne Butler Montgomery remembers her time at Livingston High School with fondness. “Livingston was a fabulous place to grow up,” Montgomery shared. “We had so many opportunities there. I thought growing up that everyone had New York City, that everyone had Broadway, that everyone had the Museum of Natural History. We were very spoiled growing up. Livingston High School also had all kinds of wonderful programs.” The LHS Class of 1973 alum had a successful career in sportscasting, but has reinvented herself many times. It was because of her experience as a member of the Broadcast Crew at Livingston High School that she knew sportscasting was what she wanted to do. “We had the broadcast crew every morning which meant we were responsible for doing the morning announcements. Six of us kids did the announcements and we ran it like a radio station. One day, I went in and I grabbed all the sports stories and one of the guys said ‘what are you doing?’ and I said ‘I want to read the sports.’ and he said ‘you can’t, you’re a girl,” On that morning, Montgomery read the sports and immediately found her niche. Through her years on the Broadcast Crew, she was affectionately known as Big Anne. “During those years, that’s when I realized that being a
sportscaster was really cool. I was used to public speaking because I was in theater and I loved sports, especially hockey. Back then, there weren’t any female sportscasters and the closest thing was Phyllis George,” Montgomery said with a laugh. Recalling her sportscasting memories, one of her biggest career moves was anchoring ESPN’s Sports Center as one of the first female anchors of the long running show. There were many moments while she was there that she remembers fondly; most of them being the kindness that athletes showed her. “Most of the moments that stick out in my brain are the nice things that people and athletes did for me. Back then, that was difficult because they weren’t used to me being around and wandering into the locker room. I’ve always been grateful to the good guys who did all they could to help me,” Montgomery shared. With a love for sports in general, it should come as no surprise that Montgomery also served as a referee for a number of years. It was only a few years ago that she hung up her officiating gear for good. While sports will always be a love, so will writing. Despite being dyslexic, Montgomery has served up many books. Her first book, A Light in the Desert, is a fictional account of the 1995 sabotage of a passenger train in Hyder, Arizona. “I’m an avid newspaper reader so when I started
writing books, it was always about issues or problems of some kind. As I wrote, I’d weave stories through those issues that I’d read about in the newspaper,” Montgomery shared. Since A Light in the Desert, Montgomery has also continued on page 5

Temple Beth Am is an Affordable Choice Two years ago Temple Beth Am embarked on a new model for our congregation. We wanted one which would help to better meet the needs of our congregants and those unaffiliated Jews in the area. We realized that temple dues and religious school costs can be obstacle for many. We decided to adjust our dues and to provide free temple membership to those families with children in religious school. This significantly reduced the cost to some families by over 70%. In addition, as a result of COVID, we had reduced our temple dues by an additional 50%. We decided to continue the 50% dues reduction for one additional year through June 30, 2022. Dues and Religious School fees for the upcoming year July 2021 through June 2022 Dues $325 per person (50% reduction) Children under the age of 24 are free. Religious School Fees • First child grades 3- 7 $1,250 (Includes free temple dues) • Second child grades 3-7 $1,000 (Includes free temple dues) • Pre K through grades 2 $180 • Torah Tots – once per month – no charge, registration required • Confirmation class - $625 ($475 if there is another child in religious school) For more information, please call our office at 973-887-0046 Check out our blog TBA2-0.org for more information about Temple Beth Am. There are no strangers at Temple Beth Am, only friends you have yet to meet.
continued from page 4 published The Magician, Wild Horses on the Salt, and The Scent of Rain. In September, she’ll add The Castle to her list. A synopsis of The Castle: “Maggie, a National Park Ranger of Native American descent, is back at The Castle—a sixhundred-year-old pueblo carved into a limestone cliff in Arizona’s Verde Valley. Maggie, who suffers from depression, has been through several traumas: the gang rape she suffered while in the Coast Guard, the sudden death of her ten-year-old son, and a suicide attempt. One evening, she chases a young Native American boy through the park and gasps as he climbs the face of The Castle cliff and disappears into the pueblo. When searchers find no child, Maggie’s friends believe she’s suffering from depression-induced hallucinations. Maggie has several men in her life. The baker, newcomer Jim Casey, who always greets her with a warm smile and pink boxes filled with sweet delicacies. Brett
Collins, a scuba diver who is doing scientific studies in Montezuma Well, a dangerous cylindrical depression that houses strange creatures found nowhere else on Earth. Dave, an amiable waiter with whom she’s had a one-night stand, and her new boss Glen. One of these men is a serial rapist and Maggie is his next target. In a thrilling and terrifying denouement, Maggie faces her rapist and conquers her worst fears once and for all.” When it comes down to it, Montgomery does everything she does in life with passion. When it comes to writing, she shared the following anecdote. “You have to find someone (an agent) who believes in you, but you also have to understand that having a best seller is like hitting the lottery,” Montgomery’s books are available on Amazon.com. 3 Ways to Protect Your Houseplants From Bugs
in just one week, flying insects can lay eggs that hatch and mature into more adults ready to breed? For this reason, it’s important to be vigilant and take action at the first sign of a bug problem. 3. Don’t let your guard down: Defend against fruit flies, gnats and flies 24/7 with a Zevo Flying Insect Trap. Just plug the trap into a regular outlet near your houseplants and wherever flying insects enter your home or gather. Rather than chemical insecticides, the traps use multi-spectrum light technology to lure flying bugs to their doom in a discreet glue sheet cartridge. When the cartridge is full, just replace it and toss the used one without ever having to touch a dead bug. To learn more, visit zevoinsect.com. Taking proper care of plants goes beyond watering them and giving them the right amount of sunlight. It also means safeguarding them from pests. The good news is that by making just a few tweaks, you can offer plants round-the-clock protection from insects. (StatePoint)
f you have recently started or expanded a houseplant collection, congratulations! You’ve improved your indoor air quality and have added life and vibrancy to your home. At the same time however, your indoor garden may be attracting bugs that can harm your precious plants and annoy you. Unfortunately, not everyone notices an infestation right away. The average household, for example, won’t recognize a fly problem until they’re five flies deep, but even one fly can lead to a larger problem. Follow these three tips to protect your houseplants -- and household -- from bugs: 1. Water plants carefully: Standing water creates a breeding ground for flying insects such as fungus gnats, which are very small and usually appear in swarms. Because these insects grow in moist soil and their larvae feed on plant roots, you can manage such infestations by reducing the amount of water you give your plants and by improving soil drainage. 2. Take action fast: Did you know that

I Remember Dad:
Remembrances of the God and Country Award
A
By Richard Mabey Jr. uthor’s Note: My dad and the late Reverend Fred Herwaldt, of the First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park, worked together as a team, to provide a wholesome, educational, quality year-long program for Boy Scouts to earn the God and Country Award. Most people think that when my dad stepped down from his 28-year service as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 170 in 1994, that he had totally retired from volunteer service in scouting. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dad was 66 years old when he retired as Scoutmaster of good old Troop 170. He had already had a heart attack. It was becoming more and more difficult for him to put a full pack on his back and lead the boys on a hike on the Appalachian Trail. It became more and more difficult for him to camp out. But my father wasn’t about to give up on his ministry to serve others. My dad firmly believed that it was better to shape a boy to become a moral gentleman than to rehabilitate a wayward man. And thus,
in 1994 my dad began serving as an Advisor for the Boy Scouts of America’s Protestant religious award, God and Country, through the First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park. Dad worked closely with the late Reverend Fred Herwaldt, in leading the year-long classes in order for the scouts to earn the God and Country Award. Dad served as an Advisor for the God and Country Award from 1994 till 2000. During this time, Dad touched the hearts and minds of many boys, guiding them to follow the golden light of truth, to follow a moral compass, and to love the Lord. The God and Country Award is a combination of scholastic study of the Holy Bible interweaved with very practical ways for a boy to apply the teachings of the Bible to serve his family, church, and community. I often reflect on how many boys’ lives my father touched through his 36-year service as a volunteer Scout Leader. For Dad had served two years as Committeeman in Troop 170, from 1964 to 1966. He served 28 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 170, from 1966 to 1994. And, Dad continued on page 11
A photo of my dad (right hand side) and Reverend Fred Herwaldt. This picture was taken in the early Summer of 1995, after the annual God and Country Award Ceremony. The scouts were always presented their well-earned God and Country Award, during a church service at the First Reformed Church of Lincoln Park.

West Orange’s Elliot Cadeau Takes Basketball Life, National Ranking in Stride
E
By Jerry Del Priore lliot Cadeau’s basketball schedule is jam-packed with games, travel, and hours of basketball-related training, year round, not to mention living the busy lifestyle of a regular adolescent. But it is the West Orange native’s unyielding dedication to the sport that he has been playing since the second grade that has grabbed ESPN’s seventh spot in the Top 25 in the nation in the 2024 class at the moment. However, Cadeau is not complaining about the demanding workload at all. He said he knows it will pay off in the future. “My schedule is crazy, but I like it,” the Bergen Catholic High School student-athlete said. “I hit the weight room almost every day. I have put on 15 pounds of muscle in the last year. My goal is to be the best basketball player I can be. I want to play pro someday.” Moreover, the hard work is paying dividends. The 6-foot2, 160-pound point guard currently owns offers from Division I college basketball programs such as Providence, UMass, Seton Hall, TCU, and Siena. And, according to national high school basketball insiders, the list is surely to grow in the future. Last season as a freshman, Cadeau posted solid numbers, scoring 102 points, grabbing 41 rebounds, dishing out 38 assists, and making 16 steals in nine games for the Crusaders. This summer, Cadeau has traveled all over to improve and showcase his hardwood talents in order to play at

the next level in the future. He played at The Nike Elite Youth Basketball Leagues (EYBL) renowned Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, Ga., in late July, and with Sweden’s National team during the first week of August. Cadeau, who holds a Swedish-American dual citizenship because his mom is Swedish, enjoys balling in front of Swedish hoops fans. “I have played in a lot of different (American) states, and a lot of different countries,” Cadeau, who also speaks Swedish, said. But “I like playing in Sweden a lot. The crowds are crazy. They like seeing Americans playing basketball. It is always a good time for me.” A pass-first point guard, Cadeau said he doesn’t mind seeing his teammates put up points. As long as he can contribute in some way, and his team wins, that is all that matters to the affable young man. “I’d rather see someone from my bench score than see me score a basket, ‘’ the 16-year-old said. “I’ve been like that since I’m a kid. I always thought pass, pass, pass. As long as we win, I’m good.” And Bergen Catholic did enjoy a productive year, registering a 7-2 mark in a truncated season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Coming out of middle school, several high schools vied for Cadeau’s buggering court services. I had the high honor to also lead the scouts on this adventurous hike, each year. One of the highlights, of this annual sojourn, was that we would all stop along the trail and cook lunch. After lunch, Dad and Reverend Herwaldt would lead the scouts in an informal church service beneath the oaks, the maples, and the

Caldwell Actor Gets Creative for Pandemic Passion Project
W
By Jillian Risberg ith too much time on her hands, actor and storyteller Noelle Gizzi wrote a 10-episode web series and gathered a talented team to pull off the ‘fish out of water meets a liar reveal comedy.’ “‘Irreverend’ was a pandemic project, through and through,” Gizzi says. “The idea was conceived during Covid-19 boredom, scripts were written over lock down, and we began the filming process in April 2021.” With projects canceled, the aspiring creative says it was disheartening to get a degree, only to have absolutely nowhere to apply it. Gizzi graduated college (Class of 2020) during the pandemic, as did other crew members and actors in the production. “There was no work, so we made our own,” says the actor. “No one paid us, but at least we got to do what we loved for the first time after (a months-long) dry spell, and now we have something exciting to show for what could have been a lost year.” The series is about Sam Miller, pretending to be a pastor for the tax break: free housing, bread and wine, Sunday coffee hour (basically free brunch) — somehow weaseling his way into an unsuspecting and underfunded little church. “‘Pastor Sam’ gets put in charge of quirky church people and weirdo teens, and along the way starts to have a personal crisis when he realizes he’s duping people, and these people actually believe in him,” Gizzi says. The whole idea was conceived during long lockdown

Caldwell from Manhattan to shoot this.” When it came to securing a location, the Caldwell United Methodist Church (of her youth) where her grandmother taught Sunday school came to mind. “My Aunt Mary has been pretty involved, so I asked continued on page 13

stretches, when she decided to scroll through ‘free stuff ’ on Craigslist, intrigued by what people will give away. “I saw a listing of youth choir robes,” says the actor. “I instantly wanted them and told my boyfriend as much. He, like any sane human being asked, ‘what on Earth are you going to do with those?’” Gizzi said she would write a show. While the premise for the series came to her then and there based on the choir robes… she never actually got the robes. She turned to Joshua Switala to make things super funny and bring the characters to life. “I have him credited as assistant writer,” the actor says. “I did the majority of the writing, moment-to-moment dialogue, but he created interesting plots and character arcs. There’s a little nepotism going on because he is also my boyfriend — our ‘plot guy,’ one of the actors, a Gopher and my personal secretary. Without him, this series would not be what it is.” She says the project took a village. There’s cinematographer Benjamin Parilis, directors Nick D’Ambrosia, Daniel Lee and Ryan Policastro. Ryan was also audio engineer, and Dan served as script supervisor. “Many other people helped us out, including Brandon Ali, Tommy Barbara, Rob DeLillo, Alex Lee, Jack McCaffrey, Patrick Morgan, Mike Perez, Ellie Schuckman, Jennifer Seitis, Tyler Stampone and Tyler Switala,” says Gizzi. “Our lead actor, Jim Staudt is an absolute gem. I’m grateful to get to know him and work with him — he came out to

her if they would be willing to let me film there,” the actor says. “Pastor Vivian Roddeffer has been a huge supporter, and I can’t thank her enough for letting us into the church and for her excitement about the project.” And she cast some actors (coincidentally people she had worked with before) from Backstage. “Several people who appear in the series are from Caldwell,” says Gizzi. “We’ve got a few Caldwell High School grads who make appearances: Class of 2016, 2018, 1985, a few current students. You’ll have to watch to find out who they are.” She’s been a performer and creative for a long time, penning her first “book” in the third grade. But film was a style of writing she had yet to explore. D’Ambrosia showed her how to properly format a film script. Gizzi has also written several plays — including a short play produced at The Theater Project, a regional theatre in New Jersey, and has done staged readings of some of her full length plays on her own — but says this experience was different. “I was also filling the role of executive producer,” she says. “It was a whole new world for me, as I had only been on the acting side of filmmaking. It will be exciting to see my words brought to life on camera.” The actor ‘kind of loves’ actress, comedian, writer, producer, playwright
Tina Fey. “I think she has created a great body of work, and it’s totally my style,” says Gizzi. “I like to create things that are funny, but also speak to people. And personally, my mother inspires me; she’s my fearless supporter.” She hopes people walk away from ‘Irreverend’ with a laugh. “There isn’t enough comedy in our world. I also want people to look at Christianity and church in a fun light,” she reflects on her own experience at church camp and various churches. “I feel like Christianity has become something it’s not meant to be in our depictions and understanding, so I want to bring back the joy of it.” According to the actor, they are not going to release ‘Irreverend’ to the public the moment it’s complete because she wants to submit it to film festivals and many have rules about previously released material. After that, it will be available on YouTube. “I already have ideas for a season two of ‘Irreverend.’ Hopefully season one is a hit and people want more from us,” says Gizzi. “‘Irreverend’ was crazy big, I don’t know what I was thinking — I guess you could say I’m ambitious.” For behind the scenes content and “congregation” spotlights, follow @ irreverendseries on Facebook and Instagram

An Eerie, Haunting August Story
B
By Richard Mabey Jr. ack in the far etched memories of the deepest caverns of heart and mind lies another time, another place. For myself and my endearing neighborhood friends, a most deep and powerful truth was granted unto us, at such an early time in life. For it was in late August of 1967, that the good Lord showed me all I had to be thankful for, all I had to be utmost grateful for. It was an endearing spiritual lesson, unfolded before my very eyes, that to this very day, still looms a most eerie and haunting quality in the deepest chords of my very heart. To say that we were all neighborhood friends, does not quite define it. For the four of us were more like brothers. For in truth, we shared a spiritual closeness that even most brothers are not quite acquainted with. It was the romantic era, the days of innocence, the summer of all for one and one for all. We would play baseball in the old back field, at the end of Mabey Lane, for hours and hours. We rode our bicycles down Main Street, for the mile-long ride, just to buy a bottle of Dad’s Root Beer and a Snickers bar at
Moe’s Sweet Shop. We camped out in each other’s backyards. We explored Hook Mountain, just south of Route 202. We fell in love with the same neighborhood girls. We walked the wooded path to the old Morris Canal. We cut the palms of our hands and pressed them together to become blood brothers of the wind, the earth, the moon and the sun. But it was in late August of 1967, that a sacred moment of truth came to us all, from which our lives would never quite be the same. My cousin Edward, lived right next to me in the carriage house along Mabey Lane. Sadly, it no longer remains. George Yost lived right across the street from me, along historic Route 202. And, Joey lived to the left-hand side of George. We were all relatively close in age, we were all filled with a love for life, a sense of adventure, and our hearts were filled with all of the longing, desire, and exhilaration to experience all that life could grant us. And now it was late August, the magical time of Summer would soon fade from us, and we would have to face the drudgery of classrooms, teachers, white chalk on blackboards, homework, and the bullies of
The old neighborhood boys, from a reunion photo taken during the Fall of 2004. We were all like brothers to one another. From left to right are Edward Mabey, yours truly, George Yost, and Joseph Manicone.
the schoolyard. But for now, this moment, we still had the few remaining days of late August to cherish and bask in, beneath the sweltering sun.
Jose Hernandez was a part of the larger circle of our neighborhood gang. He was one of a good dozen boys, to whom the core four were friends with, but to whom continued on page 16

4 Apps That Can Make Driving Safer
T
echnology has changed the world in ways too numerous to count. Many of those changes have made the world a safer place, but a growing dependence on smartphones, particularly when behind the wheel, continues to put the safety of drivers, their passengers, fellow motorists, and pedestrians in jeopardy. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that distracted driving was responsible for the deaths of more than 3,100 people in the United States in 2019. The threat of distracted driving is just as significant beyond U.S. borders as well. That includes Canada, where estimates from Transport Canada’s National Collision Database indicate 21 percent of the country’s fatal collisions involved distracted drivers. Though smartphones are not the lone distraction drivers face, they do pose a significant threat. But smartphones also can help drivers be safer behind the wheel. The following are four apps that drivers can install on their smartphones that were designed to make modern driving safer. 1. SafeDrive: The SafeDrive app can block all the textual apps in a phone, removing a major threat to drivers’ ability to concentrate
behind the wheel. Drivers who utilize SafeDrive can still make phone calls, but they won’t be able to receive or send messages. 2. LifeSaver: The LifeSaver app runs silently in the background and then wakes up and locks the phone when a driver begins driving. Parents of young drivers should know that the app’s “Family View” feature can enable them to track their children’s driving and even see when kids are behind the wheel so parents won’t contact them. The app also can alert loved ones when drivers arrive at their destination. 3. TextDrive: This app sends auto response messages to people who try to call or text drivers while they’re behind the wheel. Drivers can reply to messages using voice commands as well. 4. DriveWell: Drivers who want some insight into their driving habits should consider the DriveWell app. The app is designed to provide drivers with feedback about their driving habits. Drivers can access trip summaries, details on their maneuvers and even track their speeds. Drivers interested in utilizing technology to become safer drivers can try various apps designed to reduce driver distractions.

Haunting... continued from page 14 we never let be known the sacred, secret handshake of the core four. We were always kind and cordial to the rest of the neighborhood boys, but we instinctively knew that the brotherhood of the core four, could be watered down by being extended out to too many others. We knew very little about Jose. None of us knew him from school. Jose carried with him, a certain mystical, mysterious quality that for the most part, remained unspoken. When we played baseball at the backfield at the end of Mabey Lane, Jose would come running from the path in the northern woods and just join in with us. Jose never had his own baseball glove, so he would borrow one of ours, when it was our team’s turn to be at bat. Jose spoke broken English. He taught us some words in Spanish. We all assumed that he lived in Towaco, across the canal, across the railroad tracks. We all figured that he lived in the apartments that once abounded at the end of Bellows Lane. There was a certain unspoken rule of kiddom of the 1960’s that you just didn’t ask a fellow kid, a thousand and one questions. It came upon us in the early morning of late August 1967. Jose told us that his mom was cooking chicken enchiladas for lunch. Jose told us that he had told his mom all about his wonderful friends, who lived in Lincoln Park. Jose always referred to us as his “friends who lived in Lincoln Park.” It’s the main reason that we assumed that

he lived in the apartments at the end of Bellows Lane. At any rate, Jose told us that his mom had invited us all to have lunch with him and his mom. We were all elated. None of us had ever had enchiladas before. In fact, we had no idea what they were! So, without further ado that morning, we chose up sides for yet another baseball game. We played ball until the town whistle blew, announcing that high noon had arrived. And, then Jose, led us down the wooded path to the old Morris Canal. When we reached the canal, Jose led us to make a left along the canal path, heading west, to the border of Towaco and Lincoln Park. There in the midst of the woods along the canal, just to the west of the remains of Incline Plane Ten East, was the sighting that would change our lives. Jose led us to a village of sorts. This forested village was a clearing filled with tents and make-shift wooden shacks. Despite all of our adventurous sojourns to the old Morris Canal, we had never walked this far to the west. Most of the time we walk the path to the easterly direction to end up on Beaverbrook Road. Jose led us to his wooden shack. It was a small, woodframed home, that seemed to have been built in less than a day. Outside, Jose’s mom was cooking the chicken for the enchiladas in a big, black, cast-iron skillet above an open flame. The heavy skillet rested upon four cinder blocks, all strategically placed to balance the big skillet. There were old folding chairs abounding in the area.
Two old card tables served as the dining room table. Jose’s mother spoke little English. But enough so that we could understand her. And, when we could not grasp what she was saying, Jose would be her interpreter. The four of us sat at the two chipped and worn card tables, with Jose and his mom. Jose and his mom explained that Jose’s dad was a migrant farm worker, working at one of the local farms. After lunch, we all most properly thanked Jose’s mother for making lunch for us. Then Jose explained that he had to help his mom clean up, but that he would be up to play ball with us later on. We all left the little encampment. We then walked the easterly canal path to the point where we would head up through the forest path, to our open field. We all said very little, as we walked the forest path. The sorrow in our hearts, loomed like the haunting aura of clouds passing by a full moon. We were never to be the same again. We all held an unspoken tide of compassion for Jose, from that time on. In September of 1967, I started my freshman year at Boonton High School. Eddie, Joey, and George were all soon to complete their days of attending middle school. We never formally said goodbye to Jose. He just seemed to fade from our lives, before the first snowfall came upon us that winter. None of us were ever to see Jose again. Do You Believe in These Three Common 401(k) Misconceptions?
f you contribute a portion of your income to a 401(k), you may think you’re all set for a comfortable retirement. Experts say it’s important to take a closer look at these savings. To help you get started, Lincoln Financial Group is breaking down three common misconceptions about saving for retirement revealed in a recent survey of U.S. employees by Lincoln Financial and CivicScience: • True or False: “Saving enough to meet the employer match is enough to keep me on track for a comfortable retirement.” This one is (most likely) false! An employer match (if offered) is a good place to start, but if you really want to make sure you have enough of a nest egg to retire when and how you want, a good rule of thumb is to save at least 10 to 15 percent of your salary. • True or False: “Paying down my student loan debt as quickly as possible is more important than saving for my retirement.” This can be true…or false, depending on your situation. While you should not delay saving for retirement, it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to determine how to strategize paying off debt while also planning for your future. You can also use free tools like the debt calculator found at LincolnFinancial.com to help you make a plan for paying off debt. • True or False: “I’ve thought about moving money from an old employer’s 401(k) into my current employer’s 401(k), but it seems like it would be too much of a hassle.” This one is false! While it is important to consider all options of your 401(k) platform prior to making a decision, the process for
a rollover is typically very easy and brings multiple benefits. Instead of tracking investment selections, performance or statements for multiple accounts, for example, you’ll only have to monitor a single account. “While there are certainly still some misconceptions when it comes to saving for the future, the majority of those surveyed understand the importance of not delaying saving for later in their careers,” said Aaron Moore, senior vice president, Retirement Plan Client Engagement, Lincoln Financial Group. “This is cause for celebration, as delaying saving for retirement can have a significant impact on future savings. This is another reason why we are focused on working with employers to educate their employees so they can achieve the retirement they envision.” If you’re looking for more ways to help set yourself up for a financially secure future – here are three tips to keep in mind: 1. Check your account. It might sound simple, but logging in regularly (try for at least once a quarter) can help ensure you’re on track with your savings goal. Be sure to use the calculators and projection tools your retirement plan offers. 2. Update (or create) a goal. When you have a goal to work towards, research shows you’ll be more likely to increase your contributions, and therefore, increase your savings. 3. Meet with a professional. If your employer offers retirement consultants, schedule a meeting, or consider speaking with a financial professional, who can help you
understand the full picture of your savings and where to focus your efforts. For more resources, tools and calculators, visit LincolnFinancial.com/retirement. A comfortable financial future is achievable with a strategy. To take stock of your retirement savings, start with your 401(k). (StatePoint)

IMPLANT DENTISTRY Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in. Since that loose upper denture was made, she had been unhappy with the situation. She inquired about the possibility of a fixed bridge supported by implants. After careful examination, Dr. Chiu decided she would need very extensive bone repair in her sinuses, done in stages to allow her to have implants placed. This could take two years, because she is already wearing a removable denture. It interferes with the normal bone repair process in the other areas of her upper jaw. That’s why planning ahead is crucial when it comes to a treatment of an implant-supported fixed bridge, especially before the teeth are extracted. Often times, a lot of the “prep” work is done while a couple of teeth remain in the mouth to hold up a fixed temporary appliance. This allows for a faster healing time and more optimal placement of implants to support a fixed bridge.
Come and visit Dr. Chiu, who has placed and restored implant-supported fixed and removable prosthesis for many years. Your comfort and convenience are always Dr. Chiu’s top priorities. To know more about these procedures, please call (973) 377-0224. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have. To receive a COMPLEMENTARY IMPLANT CONSULTATION, simply mention this article during your appointment. Offer expires September 30, 2021.

Modern Kitchen and Bath Upgrades
pgrades happen for all kinds of reasons, but one of the most common purposes of a home renovation is to make essential spaces like kitchens and bathrooms more modern. Modernizing your spaces isn’t just about the aesthetic, although that is a major advantage, especially when it comes to resale value. Updating your kitchen and bath is also an opportunity to introduce new technology and enhancements that improve the function of these high-traffic rooms. Modern styles simplify everyday living and can make contemporary entertaining more enjoyable. The sleek lines of modern design lend themselves to a clean look, which is supported by hidden features that make organization easier. Smart Technology Although the idea of a connected home isn’t new, technology is steadily improving. This means smart features are now often more affordable, easily integrated into the rest of your home and available to help manage a wider range of household items. In the kitchen, you can add smart technology in numerous ways, from appliances and climate control to lighting and window treatments. For example,
touch-to-open and push-to-open doors and drawers create a sleek, modern design while opening and closing with either a push or touch of a button for convenience. Similar diversity is available in the bathroom, where you can incorporate connected health and fitness monitors, touchless toilets, mirrors that double as information centers, towel warmers and even showers that automatically adjust to your preferred temperature. Paint Changing the colors in a space is one of the most effective ways to transform the decor, but the walls aren’t the only place where paint can make a big impact, especially in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom, where the cabinetry can make a bold statement. Black is a hallmark of modern design and installing cabinetry with a black finish can instantly upgrade a room. To create visual interest, consider incorporating accent cabinets in a coordinating finish. For example, you could pair Wellborn Cabinet’s Midtown wall cabinets finished in Matte Ebony with upper center cabinets finished in Putty Oak. An island in Bel-Air can incorporate both dark and light tones for a cohesive look.
Decorative Range Hoods An exposed range hood is a trendy look that can add sophistication to your kitchen. Treating this functional element as a statement piece gives you another place to showcase your style and create a sleek and modern look. If your hood is covered, consider making the cabinet door a focal point with a material such as back-

Touchless Faucets Public restrooms aren’t the only places you can benefit from a touchless faucet. At home, the feature may come in handy when your hands are full or filthy. An automatic water flow is convenient and can help keep germs and grime under control. For the most on-trend, modern look, coordinate your faucets with other bathroom elements finished in gold hues, such as a laminate veneer vanity in a highgloss gold finish. Cabinetry Collectively, cabinets are the biggest component of most kitchens. Since kitchens tend to be the hub of the home, it’s important to maintain a homey feel while adding the luxury of modern features. Using warm colors, gold-toned hardware and sleek door styles can deliver a glamorous yet welcoming design. For example, Wellborn Cabinet’s Aspire Full Access Frameless line features flat moulding and flush lines to create a thoughtfully integrated flow throughout

the kitchen. A Morristown door in the Smokey Walnut finish and Serenity metal doors in Sand Gloss Glass marry heirloom quality and contemporary finishes for a beautiful and functional space. Free-Standing Tubs A luxurious soaking tub is a top demand for many homeowners, and trends are moving toward free-standing options that create a focal point in an oasis-like bathroom. You may be envisioning an oldfashioned claw-foot style, but there are numerous modern takes on the traditional version that can fit seamlessly into your modern design scheme. Wood-Look Flooring Natural wood floors were once the gold standard, but thanks to improvements in the quality and appearance of laminate and vinyl products, you can find alternative flooring in even high-end homes. Laminate and vinyl planks give the same look as wood (or stone, if you prefer) to complement a modern aesthetic, usually at a lower price point and with greater durability over time. avigating the job market is tricky for any job seeker. For transitioning U.S. service members and military spouses, finding one’s professional footing can be even more challenging. From frequent relocations and childcare considerations to bias on the part of potential employers, transitioning service members and military spouses face many hurdles that can adversely impact their civilian careers. According to U.S. Government sources including the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 200,000-plus service members transition from the military to civilian life each year. Currently, 650,000plus military spouses are in a state of transition. To improve their career prospects, advocates stress the importance of mentorship. “Military life teaches discipline, strong work ethic, teamwork, communication skills and adaptability – all of which
are highly valued by employers,” says Christopher Plamp, senior vice president of operations, programs and entertainment at the United Service Organizations (USO). “This employment shortfall is not a reflection of a lack of talent, skill or drive. It’s largely a matter of connecting the military community with civilian job opportunities.” As part of its mission to strengthen America’s military service members, the nonprofit USO recently partnered with Veterati, a digital mentorship platform for the military community, to launch the USO Mentorship offering. In a rapidly changing world where 80% of new jobs come from a personal connection, this resource is networking transitioning service members and military spouses with volunteer mentors in their industry of interest. These mentors are successful professionals who provide critical career guidance on interviewing skills, career

Award-Winning Outdoor Space Inspiration
enovating your home’s outdoor spaces not only enhances the aesthetic but can also provide a host of recreational benefits. Taking a look at awardwinning projects can help many homeowners draw inspiration while also identifying capable, reputable contractors to take on the project. For example, selected by a panel of industry experts based on functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty, these 2021 National Association of the Remodeling Industry National Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award Winners showcase a variety of ideas for upgrading your outdoor spaces. Find the complete list at nari.org/ cotywinners. Residential Landscape Design/Outdoor Living Under $100,000 The clients wanted to upgrade a poorly draining, impractical backyard into an attractive, functional outdoor entertainment space that flowed from the renovated basement. The project included an outdoor area for entertaining, outdoor kitchen, spacious patio with a custom concrete fire pit, oversized ceiling fans, ample storage and landscaping complete with native plants around the perimeter. “By working on this project, we learned how important it is to take a holistic look at what clients are trying to accomplish with their renovations,” said Thomas Boyce, president of Boyce Design & Contracting. “Often with outdoor living projects, designers and contractors look at the exterior of the home in isolation. We
learned to look at how the interior and exterior of the home connect to each other to make sure the features and floor plan flow and work well together. By taking this approach, we were able to achieve a better finished product that is more functional and attractive for our clients.” Residential Landscape Design/Outdoor Living $100,000-$250,000 A young, active family was looking to create a distinct outdoor living space with multiple entertainment spaces that tied in with the existing aesthetic and elevated the home amongst its neighbors. The lowmaintenance backyard now features an outdoor dining area, sunken living room, entertainment area and additional storage space built with the home’s current architectural features while also maintaining a large enough yard for the kids and their friends to play. “The aesthetic of the outdoor areas was designed not only for function but also to reflect the interiors and keep the inside-outside living feeling continuous,” said Tim Johnson, owner and founder of Livit Site + Structure. “For example, the shiplap used on the fire table is the same shiplap featured inside the home.
Likewise, the Douglas fir timbers used on the pergola are the same as the interior ceiling beams.” Residential Landscape Design/Outdoor Living Over $250,000 A 4,000-square-foot project built at four different elevations, this client wanted to include a safe way to move from the upper level to the backyard without coming through the house, a structure for shade and protection from mosquitoes and a pool with features that reflected the home. Adding a covered screen room with individually controlled wall panels, seethrough fireplace, fountain, pool with sheer descent waterfalls, recycled rock walls and staircase from the upper elevation while enclosing it all within a stone wall met those expectations. “A sound piece of advice for anyone building anything in the backyard: get a plan,” said Ken DePratt, owner of KD Poolscapes, Ltd. “Have it match your expectations list. Then, and only then, will you know if it matches your budget. We would recommend doing your research when taking on a pool project of any size. It’s hard to push that hole around once it’s dug.” (Family Features)

Home Upgrades to Improve Indoor Air Quality
hen most people think about air quality, they’re typically thinking about outdoor pollution. However, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air inside your home can be as polluted, or even more so, than the air outside. The concentrations of some indoor pollutants can be as much as 2-5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations. The air inside your home also contains pollutants from everyday activities like cooking, bathing and cleaning. A family of four can produce the equivalent of 22-30 pounds of moisture per day from normal activities, according to the Institute of Specialist Surveyors and Engineers, while household cleaners and products like paint, upholstery, carpeting and plastics can release chemicals containing volatile organic compounds. On average, Americans spend an estimated 90% of their time indoors, according to the EPA. All that time with minimal access to daylight and fresh air can take a toll on your health. These steps for managing indoor air quality can help you create a healthier home. Support your HVAC system Many homeowners assume their heating and cooling (HVAC) system is adequate to manage their home’s indoor air quality. Typically, these systems only circulate existing indoor air, so you’re missing out on the benefits of circulating fresher, cleaner air. What’s more, without regular servicing and frequent filter replacements, it’s easy for standard HVAC systems to fall short. This is especially true in older homes or in households where there’s a high volume of allergens like
dust or pet dander. Adding standalone or integrated devices can help give your HVAC system some extra support. Air purifiers can effectively help filter pollutants while ultraviolet lights purify the air and help control pollutants like bacteria, mold and mildew. Improve fresh air ventilation When it comes to upgrades that improve air quality, better fresh air ventilation is near the top of the list for many homeowners. Improved ventilation allows you to clear out stale, polluted indoor air and circulate fresh, outdoor air in your home. Polluted air tends to stagnate at the ceiling, so one effective and energy-efficient way to create natural ventilation is with skylights that open. Sometimes called

venting or operable skylights, when you open skylights in combination with vertical windows, you create natural airflow that can help release indoor air pollutants and bring in fresh, clean air to keep your home healthy and pleasant. This concept is known as the chimney effect. Warm air naturally rises and escapes from open skylights while fresh air is drawn inside through the windows. This practice can reduce your reliance on air conditioning, improving your home’s overall efficiency and keeping a lid on cooling costs. Today’s skylights can also be automated to open and close at regular intervals or extend and retract shades to block light as needed. Many models, including those from Velux, can even connect to a smartphone app to combine convenience with a soothing mood booster that supports health and wellness. Keep up with cleaning Textiles like carpeting, rugs and window treatments can harbor a great deal of dust and dander that reduces air quality. It’s important to regularly clean and air out these decorative fabrics and surfaces, especially thick carpet that is likely to host dust mites and bacteria. Remember air quality while you’re cleaning, too, and opt for cleaning products with fewer chemicals. When possible, use microfiber cloths and natural materials like white vinegar and soap flakes. With proper upgrades, adjustments and care, you can enjoy a home filled with fresh, healthy air and comfortable surroundings year-round. Learn more at whyskylights.com. (Family Features)
