By Bethany Zorn inger, songwriter and North Caldwell native, Paul Gargiulo, has been nominated for this year’s Josie Music Awards for Americana Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year.

This year marks the second consecutive Josie Music Award nominations for Gargiulo after taking home the award for the 2017 Americana Artist of the Year.

“I was excited to be nominated two years in a row and for three more awards this year,” said Gargiulo. “I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity.”

Created in 2015 to celebrate those in the independent music industry, the Josie Music Awards holds an all genre music award show ceremony, which includes a red carpet and performances by various musicians. It’s the largest independent artist award show attracting thousands of people from all over the globe such as songwriters, record labels, talent agencies, producers, engineers, management companies, press and fans.

The Josie Music Awards selects their winners and nominees based on an assessment of an artist’s talent, skill, material and professionalism. Nominee suggestions go through a lengthy review process by a

team of leaders and experts in the music industry.

Gargiulo will be attending this year’s awards ceremony on Sept. 8 at the famous Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Lead East Introduces New Generation To The ‘50’s

T

By Elsie Walker hirty-five years ago, Terry Cook from Delahaya USA in Chester started a car show that turned into an event like no other: Lead East, known as the world’s biggest ‘50’s party. The event grew to become a journey back in time to the music, dance, movies, and sights of the 1950s.

After the last Lead East, Cook decided to retire to write a book. However, the party isn’t over. Four longtime Lead East attendees from the Hope area have taken ownership of the event and Jim Craig of Great Meadows has become event coordinator. With these changes, Lead East still features an abundance of classic cars, but it is morphing from a party into a festival of the 1950s, with more offerings for kids than in the past. Classic cars are still a big part of it, as is the

spirit of giving. Lead East will run from Thursday, Aug. 30 to Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Parsippany Hilton.

“We want to open the door to more generations and introduce other generations to the ‘50’s,” explained Craig. He compares attending Lead East to being beamed up to a spaceship and taken back in time.

Things were different then.

“In the ‘50s, everything was American; it was an American phenomenon,” he said.

Lead East has always had the sounds of rock and roll bands and accapella do-wop groups, the look of ‘50s fashion like poodle skirts and greased back hair, plus a traditional prom and even Elvis sightings.

Now, it is offering more for not only those who remember the ‘50s, but those experiencing it for the first time.

Craig shared that people can

learn about how to dress like the ‘50’s or to decorate their home ‘50’’s style. Country line dancing has been added to the dance lesson offerings.

Craig noted that classic country was also part of the ‘50’s. For kids there will be Craigles the

clown, a clown mobile, a flea circus, face painting, balloon animals and contests. A model making contest will be open to both boys and girls, in two different age groups. The children will be supplied with model car continued on page 3

Singer Nominated... continued from front page and nominations, Gargiulo has been the recipient of several other awards including an Akademia Award for his song “Graveyard Tale” and was one of the N.J. winners in the Guitar Center sponsored “King of Country Blues” competition.

Gargiulo plays shows throughout the year all over N.J., N.Y., P.A., and Nashville, Tenn. as a solo artist, or as “The Paul Gargiulo Band” with the help of drummer Greg Sundel and bassist Bob Garbo.

Gargiulo describes his music as “music for the soul with a touch of grit.” His Americana style is a mixture of blues, country, rock and soul music.

He launched his musical career by first singing and writing the blues. His original lyrics reflect his own personal experiences, struggles, lessons learned, loss and inspirations.

Gargiulo recalls being first

musically influenced by the music and movies of Elvis Presley when he was just 10 years old.

“After discovering Elvis, my parents got me guitar lessons at a local music studio,” said Gargiulo. “I studied and studied throughout my teens and got very serious musically after high school around the age of 20. At that time, I joined my first band and we played local clubs as well as the South Jersey music circuit.”

Being born and raised in North Caldwell, Gargiulo is no stranger to the local N.J. music scene.

“There really are a lot of musicians that come out of N.J. in various styles such as jazz, or rock,” said Gargiulo. “ I find it special for me because I am doing music that doesn’t sound like it’s from Jersey, as I am told. It makes me different.”

When he is not writing or

performing, Gargiulo is teaching guitar to his students. He looks forward to continuing teaching and releasing brand new music in the near future.

Six Ways To Help Prevent Bullying

utting an end to bullying is everyone’s responsibility. Whether at home, school or elsewhere, it’s important that we’re proactive.

Here are five ways that kids and parents can do their part.

1. Don’t be a bystander.

It’s true that it takes a lot of courage to stand out from the crowd and defend a victim of bullying. After all, the risk is that you’ll become the next target simply for speaking up.

But reporting bullying and being there for someone who needs it are actions you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life.

2. Stop sibling bullying at home. You may think it’s harmless, but it’s not. Disdainful eye rolling, relentless teasing, humiliating taunts, hitting and verbal abuse directed at a sibling can cause depression and anxiety. Make sure your home is a safe place for everybody who lives there.

3. Enlist the help of adults.

If you see a need for increased adult supervision at high-risk times and places at school or at home, ask for help from a trusted adult.

4. Get on board with an anti-bullying campaign at school. These campaigns show kids that bullying is not cool and won’t be tolerated any longer. Make an anti-bul-

lying banner and use social media to advertise the fact that you stand up against verbal and physical violence.

5. Parents: get involved. If your child is a victim of bullying, you need to take the situation seriously. Schools, the police and child psychology experts vigorously object to the belief that bullying is a childhood rite of passage. If the problem doesn’t stop, talk to the school authorities, and then to the police if there are no further improvements. At home, be vigilant about sibling bullying, and make it stop.

6. Pay attention to cyberbullying. Those who use cell phones, internet or other devices for social media interaction open themselves up to the latest form of bullying.

Parents, be aware and get involved. Teach your child proper usage of these devices and reinforce that sending any text, message or photo that is cruel, hateful or threatening is as harmful as face to face bullying. Learn about the internet and pay attention to what your child is doing online. All users should be taught cyberethics and the law to prevent cyberbullying. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be a cyberbully.

Bullying is no longer seen as a normal rite of passage for children; it’s a preventable behaviour that we can eradicate through education, awareness and action.

Both Christopher and Dana Reeve were staunch advocates and champions for the disabled. After his horse riding accident that left him paralyzed in 1995, actor Christopher Reeve put a human and familiar face on those who are enduring spinal cord injuries and paralysis. No more could people pretend that it was just an anonymous person who was suffering with a disability: Reeve was famous, and had been considered synonymous with Superman!

But he was more than just a celebrity or a figurehead. He and his wife Dana were activists, driven to create positive changes.

Utterly passionate regarding helping these fellow courageous folks living with physical challenges, Reeve simply considered them heroes. He staunchly sought to give them hope, because he knew how easily they could feel hopeless.

A staggering 1 in 50 people in the United States, approximately 5.4 million Americans live with paralysis of some kind. And those aren’t just numbers or statistics; they are people close to us. “We all know someone a brother, sister, friend, neighbor

or colleague who is suffering with paralysis. They aren’t strangers. They are one degree of separation from all of us,” officials assert.

The Reeves’ Foundation is dedicated to performing innovative research, securing grants, providing information and much needed advocacy to aid their clients.

During the past 16 years and moving forward, The Reeve Foundation and National Paralysis Resource Center continue to compete in a rigorous bidding process for every three years’ worth of funding, but the results for their clients are golden.

Since it opened in 2002, 100,000 people have been aided by this organization with approximately 20,000 people helped in the past three years alone.

According to Anna Chamberlain, supervisor of Marketing and Communications for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation since 2015, the Reeve Foundation has a dual mission.

“We focus on creating resources and programs to help the 5.4 million Americans and their families impacted by paralysis though our Paralysis Resource Center while also funding innovative and cutting edge research to find cures for spinal cord injuries in the near future,” she explains.

Offering a multitude of free services such as their peer program which offers a way of connecting individuals and caregivers with respective peer mentors to offer much needed emotional support, their military veterans program, information specialists, quality of life grants, program advocacy, and policy programs, these re-

sources are designed to aid the whole individual. They empower both the body and spirit, to help to navigate the insecure journey ahead.

“The programs help individuals return to actively participating in their communities, achieving independence and self-sufficiency, achieving things we take for granted like learning how to drive again, going back to work and even leaving their own homes are also ways in which the PRC helps individuals every day.” Chamberlain enthuses.

This recent grant will do so much for so many, making positive and uplifting differences in their lives.

“We are thrilled that we can continue to expand our programs to help even more individuals and families create a pathway to navigate their way towards an independent and thriving future,” Chamberlain says. “In many ways the PRC provides hope that many have lost, especially after those few days and weeks after a traumatic injury or event. Water Safety Tips Important To Follow Year Round

t’s the “good old summertime,” a chance to share time with friends and families outdoors: at parties, barbecues and perhaps at the local swimming pool, nearby lake or even the ocean. With the warmer weather and easy access to the outdoors, safety - and particularly water safety - remains a concern when it comes to loved ones, especially small children.

Here are some tips to keep everyone safer in and around the water.

To lower the risk, designate a water watcher. Learn and practice lifesaving skills. Know the basics of swimming including floating, moving through water, CPR and first aid.

When near water ensure the phone is fully charged, turned on and available.

Install a four-sided isolation fence with self-closing and self-latching gates around backyard swimming pools.

Install a pool alarm.

Always check the pool first.

Never leave water in buckets, wading pools or inflatable pools.

Swim lessons should not be seen as “drown proofing.”

Avoid inflatable swimming aids - they are not a substitute for approved life vests and often give children and parents a false sense of security.

Know the signs of drowning for oneself and others. If exhibiting signs of drowning, stop and float.

Here are nine water safety mistakes even careful parents make.

Four-time Olympian Gold Medalist Janet Evans recently reminded others of the top nine mistakes that even careful parents can make in regard

to water safety. As a mother of two kids, she has plenty of hands-on experience keeping kids safe in the water—and smart insights into the pool mistakes even careful parents make.

1 - “My child is too young to learn to swim” – Statistics compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation prove that when parents put their child in formal swimming lessons, it reduces their risk of drowning by 88 percent.

2 - “The lifeguard will watch them.” – Drownings at pool parties are swift and silent, and usually take place with adults standing only feet away from the pool. Put the cell phone away, forget about all the other things that need to get done and give young children 100 percent of attention when they are near or around water.

Assign Water Watcher Cards – these designate an adult as the Water Watcher for a certain amount of time, such as a 15-minute period, to prevent lapses in supervision.

3 - “My child is water safe.”

– Janet Evans says: “No child is ever water safe. I am an Olympic champion, and I am not water safe! I could trip on the pool deck, hit my head and fall in.” As a USA Swimming Foundation Ambassador, I stress the importance of keeping children “safer” in and around the water, giving us one less thing to worry about.” Always ask, “Is there risk involved? How can I reduce the risk for my children?” As a family, learn to identify the risks associated with activities in, on, or around water.

4 - “I can solely rely on water wings to teach my kids to swim.” – Parents think that wa-

ter wings help their kids learn how to swim, but most water safety advocates do not recommend them because they give children a false sense of security. When a child accidentally falls in a pool it is generally without water wings. They need to know how to swim without them. Swimming aids such as water wings or noodles are fun toys for kids, but they should never be used in place of a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD). Never use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. These toys do not prevent drowning, nor are they a life-saving device.

5 - “My pool is safe.” – Drain Entrapments: Parents should make sure that their pool’s drain and pump systems are

compliant with current state and federal regulations; find information at Pool Safely.gov.

Long hair should always be secured when swimming so that it does not become trapped in a faulty drain. Don’t be shy about asking your local public pool if their drains and pump systems are compliant. Also keep the deck free of toys and other objects, so no child can trip and fall into the pool. It’s important to teach kids proper pool and spa behavior, and to make sure that they are aware of the safety rules. Inflatable pools can be as dangerous as a regular pool; empty and turn over or deflate when not in use.

Drowning is silent and can take less than a minute. Never take eyes off a child while they are in a body of water for any reason. Never leave a baby in the tub even for a second. Children drown in bath seats and rings quickly and silently. Siblings cannot properly supervise a young child in this situation. If a child cannot swim, stays within arm’s reach of the child. Even in a portable pool.

7- “I don’t need a gate around my pool.” – Children can slip out of homes and into a pool unnoticed - even children with swimming abilities could run into trouble. Home pools, along with hot tubs and Jacuzzis, should have a self-locking gate around them if children are present in and around the home at any time. For pool

owners: Install four-sided isolation fencing; use pool alarms; hot tubs should be covered and locked when not in use; portable pools need to be treated with the same caution.

8 - “If I can’t find my child, I should search the house before checking the pool.” – If a home has a pool, it should be the very first place to look.

Once again, drowning is swift and silent. Know which child’s friends and neighbors have pools. Make sure the child will be supervised by an adult while visiting.

9 - “I’ll know what to do if my child needs help.” – Every adult should know CPR and the actions to take if they find a child unconscious in a pool.

One can never be too prepared. CPR administered in a timely manner can prevent brain damage and be the differ-

ence between life and death.

Parents have a million things to do but getting CPR certified should be on the top of the list.

It will give tremendous peace of mind – and the more peace of mind to have as a parent, the better. The American Red Cross, local hospitals, fire departments and recreation departments offer CPR training.

Keep rescue equipment and a first aid kit poolside. Know how to use the rescue equipment.

Have an emergency action plan for family and have a phone with emergency numbers programmed into speed dial.

Swimming skills at a young age are most important.

Children are safer when they master swimming skills at an early age. Qualified instructors in many public and private community swimming

Save Money, Live Easier With 5 Ways To Save For College

By Azalia Whitlock ongratulations! The college process is over! The applying, the application fees, the running around for recommendation letters. It’s all over. Now the whole family is probably running to the nearest Bed Bath and Beyond trying to find which comforter is the most “aesthetically pleasing” to the ideal dream college dorm. Before running for those necessities, come back to reality and realize that this isn’t the end of the worry.

For most families, how much money college will cost is top priority because as years continue, the prices for schools climb. Have no fear, here are some ways for soon to be college students to save and make money to help them keep college costs as low as possible.

Apply for federal work study Federal Work Study is a program most schools have in which students receive a job through the student employment office. The money that the student earns does not go toward their tuition but instead goes to the student as cash during the semester. Depending on the school, they allow students a certain amount of money to earn. Mary Primich of Trenton, a sophomore at Monmouth University double majoring in secondary education and English, works on campus at Pollak Theater through federal work study.

“It’s hard getting a job when you’re in school,” she says. “It’s cool how we’re able to work on campus throughout the semester and get paid for it. I use a little bit of it for day to day expenses and then the other half I save some of it to pay off my loans.”

Federal work study is also a great way for students to get involved with their school as

well as making money.

Apply for EOF EOF (Educational Opportunity Fund), is a scholarship that allows New Jersey students to receive a well-rounded education that they normally would not be able to afford. Given to those students more than capable of doing great things after college, chosen applicants are given full admission to the university that they attend, financial support, and services throughout the year to help them succeed during their next four years.

Arina Martin of Jackson, a sophomore at Monmouth University majoring in music, is one EOF scholarship recipient.

She states “EOF has given me the opportunity to go to college when I couldn’t afford it.

Without it (EOF), I’m not sure if I would have been able to go to a university.”

Be sure to check out the school’s website for their EOF program or call the school’s EOF department for requirements in seeking this financial help.

Staying at home for school isn’t always bad Community college saves students money on food, room and board as well as other expenses such as room décor and transportation.

Kassidy Orzechowski of Clifton, who recently transferred from Monmouth to go to Bergen Community College explains “I was supposed to go to Montclair but Montclair suggested I go to my local community college because getting your associates degree counts as having your general education requirements completed, so it makes more sense and it’s cheaper.”

Although some may look down upon going to a community college, many would agree

that these students are making a wise choice as the cost difference between a community college and a university is evident.

Orzechowski explains, “I’m paying $2,500 to be a full-time student this semester instead of $16,000+ a semester. If I did this a year ago I’d be in a better position because no matter what all of my credits would have transferred so I’d be in a better position.”

Sell old clothes to a local thrift store Selling items and clothing that the student no longer uses anymore is a perfect way to not only save and make money, but to help the student determine what items are important versus completely irrelevant. By selling clothes at stores such as Platos Closet in Ledgewood, a recycling store that allows

customers to sell gently used clothes for cash and other items that they do not use, the student can save space in the car for move in day and make some extra cash.

Bryanna Welch of Long Branch, a sophomore at Monmouth University majoring in sociology, endeavors in shopping at thrift stores.

She states “If we are comparing goodwill to Urban Outfitters, then I would be saving so much money. Usually I compare quality and cleanliness of the clothing itself. I like good will because it helps out charities.”

Carolyn Welch of Long Branch, a sophomore at Monmouth University, says “Summer jobs are the way to go for college kids. You get bored in the summer anyways, so why not make some money!” Welch advises to incoming freshmen to “Get a job for the summer before you go to college and save up money for

the first semester for whatever it is they want to spend it on whether it be going out to eat or shopping. If you receive any money for Christmas, be sure to save it up for the next semester and file for tax returns in March!”

These tips and tricks to saving money have worked and though they may be minor, they do help to save money to buy books for a semester or décor for the dorm room. College is an expensive experience, but by working hard and keeping the future in focus, the end game can be capable of achieving.

Women In Need Get Fashion Boost From Brighton Event

omen in need will get a wardrobe boost, thanks to the Career Closet, a program of the Linda and Rudy Slucker NCJW/ Essex Center for Women, and a special July trade-in event at the fashion accessories store Brighton Collectibles.

Brighton offered $25 to $50 off new handbags when buyers traded in their own gently-used handbags. The gently-used handbags were then donated to the Career Closet. This year the Career Closet received 75 handbags from the annual 10day event.

This is the seventh year the Brighton Collectibles store at the Mall at Short Hills participated in this event with the Career Closet being the recipient.

“Brighton is to be commended for its support of women entering the workforce who are faced with the financial challenge of having interview and work appropriate clothing,” said Beverly Trust, co-chair of the Career Closet. “This is really a wonderful thing for the NCJW/Essex Ca-

reer Closet.”

Volunteers at the NCJW/Essex Career Closet in Livingston serve as personal shoppers to assist women in obtaining career attire and accessories appropriate for the workplace.

Women are referred by the NCJW/Essex Center for Women and other social service agencies and receive coordinating clothing and accessories appropriate for interviewing and the workplace at no cost.

The objective is to help women enter an interview or begin a new job with confidence. The Career Closet is open to clients by appointment only.

Support Group Offers Hope To Grieving Children

egistration is now open for the Rainbow’s Children’s Support Group at the NCJW/Essex Center for Women, which will begin on Oct. 9.

Child 5 to 12 years old grieving a loss from a life-altering crisis such as death, divorce, separation, abandonment or other painful family transition, can turn to the RAINBOWS Program at the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women in Livingston. The group meets once a week for 10 weeks with the help of cochairs Lisa Bayer, Cindy Charney and Amy Brothman Ramer, all of Livingston. The program is offered free of charge regardless of school enrollment, religious affiliation, or town of

residence.

Rainbows is an international nonprofit organization that provides peer support to encourage children to express their feelings. They are assisted in handling their grieving and adjustment process by caring, trained adults. It is not counseling or therapy. Kids learn there are many others like them dealing with the trauma of loss. Currently, the program is in elementary schools, high schools, churches, synagogues, day care centers, and Y’s in 49 states and 16 foreign countries.

orthern New Jersey Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and now America’s Boating Club, will offer the New Jersey State Police approved Boating Safety Course at James Caldwell High School from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Sept.18.

The course, taught by certified instructors licensed by the State of N.J., and which meets all the mandatory requirements necessary for obtaining a N.J. State Boating Safety Certificate, will run every Tuesday evening for seven weeks, which includes a night for review and a night for the required state examination. The cost of the course is $90.

Failure to exhibit the certificate is presumptive evidence that the person has not completed an approved boating safety course and is subject to a fine. One must be at least 12 years of age to take the course.

No Vacation From Learning: United Way Program Keeps Kids Engaged

tudies indicate that students lose the knowledge equivalent of one month of instruction per year due to summer learning loss. United Way of Northern New Jersey “Success By 6,” is helping parents combat this summer slide with a free calendar that promotes literacy. Featuring bright children’s artwork, the calendar offers daily ideas tied to reading, creating arts and crafts projects or taking part in a related activity.

“During the summer months, parents have a lot more hours to fill with activities for their kids,” said United Way of Northern New Jersey Education Impact Area Director Michelle Roers. “This calendar helps keep the learning going in a fun, engaging way.”

The Family Learning Calendar is available online by going to www.UnitedWayNNJ.org and clicking on the “Summer’s Here” box.

The calendar features a word of the week that families can discuss, as well suggest-

ed activities to reinforce the words. Each week also sees age-appropriate book recommendations. During the week of Aug.19, for example, children will learn about the word picnic by reading books, planning a picnic and making a paper cutout picnic basket.

“Reading throughout the year is always important, but it’s particularly key to keep the reading habit going when school is out during the summer months,” Roers said.

United Way “Success By 6” is a coalition of community volunteers, child care center directors, parents and nonprofit agencies committed to ensuring that children enter kindergarten prepared for school and life. The coalition is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of early childhood development and advocating for public policies to improve young children’s lives.

United Way is seeking sponsors to print the calendar, which would help ALICE and families in poverty who may

not have access to computers on a daily basis. Research suggests that summer learning loss has a greater impact on low-income students. For more

NCJW/Essex Center For Women Offers Computer Classes In September

egistration is now open for computer classes, which start on Sept. 5 at the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women. Basic EXCEL is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and Intro to WORD from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

These classes are each six sessions and are open to all women who need to improve their skills for job positions or for women who would just like to learn for their own personal use. The Center for Women also offers low-cost career ser-

vices for women who would like to enter or re-enter the workforce. Additional free services are available for displaced homemakers. A displaced homemaker is defined as a woman who has lost her primary source of income due to divorce, separation, or the death/disability of a spouse.

The Career Services Program offers one-on-one job counseling, as well as seminars in career choices, resume writing, job search strategies, and interview techniques. Recently, a patient came to Dr. Chiu with a loose full denture in her upper jaw. It turned out she just had her teeth extracted last year and the new denture was put in.
