Special Ed Teacher Draws On Personal Struggles At Speaking Engagement

By Anya Bochman iagnosed with Tourette Syndrome and quite knowledgeable of its challenges, Robert Naturale of Caldwell was the natural choice to speak on the topic recently at a Morris County school district.

Naturale, a teacher at Montville Township High School for the past 15 years, spoke at Morris Hills and Morris Knolls high schools in Rockaway on Oct. 5 and 6. Traditionally, the township schools host an assembly in the fall in conjunction with that year’s summer reading. As the chosen speaker, Naturale was selected to address the student body and hold a Q&A session.

cation science in Montville, holds a Special Ed Certification, a master’s in school counseling, is married and has three children, two of whom are currently in college.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t until he was of college age himself that he was first diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette is part of a spectrum of tic disorders and, unlike in Naturale’s case, is typically diagnosed at onset in childhood. The condition is characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal tic.

Though the tics can be suppressed temporarily, prolonged suppression results in growing discomfort. Some common tics are eye blinking, coughing, throat clearing, sniffing and facial movements.

“A lot of people think of [Tourette] like that “South Park” episode, where a person curses a lot,” Naturale says of common misconceptions. “Less than 10 percent [of those afflicted] actually curse.”

According to the science teacher, people also commonly inquire if the tics are controllable; to explain, he likens them to attempting to suppress a sneeze. He also points out that the general public is typically unaware that Tourette Syndrome comes with a host of comorbid issues, such as learning disabilities, anxiety and depression.

As Naturale is both a sufferer of the condition and someone quite educated on the subject, he was an ideal candidate for the recent speaking engagement.

This year’s summer reading choice was “Front of the Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had” by Brad Cohen. The book, which was later turned into a TV movie, chronicles the struggles of a young man who overcame misconceptions about his condition and became a teacher, helping others like him cope with the syndrome.

The story closely parallels Naturale’s own upbringing; the teacher

likens himself to an “average Joe” who works hard and has a family, yet faced a number of challenges growing up.

“I grew up coping with a disability,” Naturale says. “It was a matter of ‘turning it into lemonade.’”

Part of his program to help students with Tourette Syndrome – and himself – is what he calls his “Five Point Strategy:” the comprehensive set of behaviors consists of developing communication skills, educating people to improve tolerance and acceptance, honing social skills, embracing sports and athletics, finding a trusted adult (besides one’s parents) to confide in and developing self-reliance.

“There is definitely a correlation between my having Tourette’s and being a Special Ed teacher,” says Naturale, who receives Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in addition to his Five Step Program. “I struggled in school myself. There are very smart people with disabilities who need a leveled playing field.”

His next goals are to pursue a Drug and Alcohol Counselor Certification, and follow in Cohen’s footsteps with an autobiographical self-help book in his future.

“I like helping the young population,” Naturale says.

Fall In Love With The Caldwell News’ New Magazine-Style

Readers can expect the same great positive stories local to the area, but at the same time enjoy the smaller, compact paper easier to take along and even keep intact without pages falling out. The new format is really a blend between a newspaper and magazine.

“The only difference is the size and the cover,” says Joe Nicastro, co-publisher of New View Media Group LLC along with Mary Lalama. “We still will have news and local articles. In fact the actual size of the image area is exactly the same in length at 10” just the width is 7.5” instead of 10.”

New View Media Group currently publishes 14 monthly newspapers and four bi-monthlies, covering stories in 42 municipalities, mailed for free to more than 190K homes and businesses.

Jersey) Media back in 2004, starting with the Mt. Olive Weekly.

That grew to eight papers, to 15 in 2015 when they added seven new publications in the Eastern part of N.J. and changed their name to New View Media with an idea to “have a new view on media,” says Nicastro.

Since then, they added on four more bi-monthlies in the northeastern region of N.J. stretching into Passaic County with the publication of the Hometown News.

“I am always looking for ways to improve the product,” says Nicastro regarding the recent style change of his papers. “After discussion with many readers over a period of time the same suggestion was being said. They wanted a magazine type publication that would not have pages fall out when moved and something smaller that is easier to handle.

This was a tough decision as the printing costs are about 15 percent higher than the large size. But I wanted to make sure the readers

While photos have always been included, the publications attract readers with a larger colorful photo on the front cover.

“It allows us to feature a large local photo on the front cover and as well as offer our advertisers some other advertising options,” says Nicastro, adding that he is pleased with all the positive feedback he has received so far.

“I have to say in my 30 years of publishing I have received more positive responses to the magazine format than anything else I have done,” he says. “I even received calls from many small businesses looking to advertise.”

Each issue hopes to draw in more input from readers and timely topics.

For example, “For our Valentines issue I would like to have readers submit letters on how they met their loved ones,” he says.

For Memorial Day, readers will be encouraged to send in photos of loved ones lost in the service; and for Veterans Day, readers can submit photos of their family members who served.

RCC Plans Rotary Playground Restoration

President Jennifer Hawley is not just playing around. The RCC recently approved $3,300 to repair and restore equipment in

the Rotary Playground next to the community center in Caldwell.

The club donated the playground about six years ago and it had fallen into disrepair.

Walk For Kids’ Sake Set For Oct. 29

ig Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Jersey plans to hold its 50th Anniversary Walk for Kids’ Sake Fundraiser at Wyndham Worldwide Headquarters in Parsippany on Sunday, Oct. 29.

All proceeds from Walk for Kids’ Sake will fund one-to-one mentoring programs.

The entire family is invited to wear costumes and bring trick-ortreat bags to pick up candy along the route. There will be games, face painting, costume contests, a bouncy house, complimentary breakfast and lunch. All participants will receive a 2017 Walk for Kids’ Sake T-shirt.

41st Annual Morristown Craftmarket Sunday Oct. 20-22

he Morristown CraftMarket, now celebrating its 41st consecutive year as a nationally acclaimed and charitable fine art and craft show featuring 150 gifted artists from more than 25 states throughout the country, will be held Friday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Morristown Armory.

The show hours are: Fri., Oct. 20, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 21, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sun., Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“For four decades, the Morristown CraftMarket has received acclaim as a major cultural and charitable event not only in New Jersey but throughout our nation,” said Show Director Geoffrey Price, a member of the not-for-profit and all-volunteer Kiwanis Club of Randolph Township, which sponsors and runs the Morristown CraftMarket.

Premature Birth is a National Health Crisis A Silent Auction will be run throughout the show in loving memory of Robert James “RJ” Nelson, III, a brave baby boy who was born 13 1/2 weeks premature and fought hard for the right to live for 82 days (April 6 - June 27, 2016).

The Silent Auction will put the spotlight on premature birth which the March of Dimes calls “the leading cause of death of babies in the U.S.” (Premature Birth Report Card, www.multivu.com) Proceeds from the Silent Auction will benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Morristown Medical Center (“Sam’s NICU”), which helps premature babies and their families. The Silent Auction will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. at the show. Winners need not be present.

he community is encouraged to bring unwanted computers, telephones and other electronic devices to the Essex County Computer and Electronics Recycling Day Oct. 21 at the Old Essex County Hospital Center.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is sponsored by the County of Essex and the Essex County Utilities Authority.

“Recycling computer hardware and electronic devices helps remove lead and other dangerous chemicals from our waste stream, which is important for us and our children,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo. “With your participation, we can do our part to protect the environment.

Our collection days are very popular and I am glad our residents understand the importance of recycling.”

Items being accepted include computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, telecom

equipment, speakers, televisions, keyboards, main frames, VCRs, stereos, DVD players, toasters, irons and cellular telephones. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms will not be accepted.

Under DiVincenzo’s leadership, the county’s collection program has been expanded to include household hazardous waste, old computers and electronic equipment, used tires and paper shredding. In addition, the Household Hazardous Waste and Computer and Electronics collection days are held in the spring and fall.

The Essex County Computer and Electronics Recycling Day is for Essex County residents only. Residents are not charged when they bring materials, but they must provide proof of residency at the site. Caldwell University Reaches Out To Nonprofits For Annual Caldwell Day

W

hen he walked down Roseland Avenue in Caldwell, Orges Rrapay was always curious about the inner workings of the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department.

The Caldwell University student got a chance to learn about the operation Sept. 29 when he and other students and faculty volunteered at the firehouse for Caldwell Day, the university’s annual day of community service.

They cleaned the fire trucks and were given a tour. For Rrapay, who is from Albania, it was gratifying to see the dedication of the fire department. He felt a sense of community that said, “We are here in good days and bad days, even when a fire occurs.”

The firehouse was just one of several community groups and nonprofits where 243 Caldwell students, faculty and staff used their hands and hearts to put into action the university’s Catholic Dominican pillar of service.

Caldwell University Science Department faculty member Dr. Marjorie Squires and some students volunteered at the ARC of Essex County Stepping Stones School in Roseland, which provides services for children with Down syndrome from ages 3 to 10. Squires was impressed by the dedication of the teachers and by the children’s joy.

“I’m uplifted,’’ she said. “My soul is happy and light.”

School Delay In Hurricane Torn USVI Invites More Backpack, Lunch Box And Supply Donations

By Cheryl Conway ost hurricane conditions in United States Virgin Islands have delayed schools from starting so why not donate a backpack or lunch box to help displaced kids get off to a good start once school is in session?

West Orange resident Phyllis Johnson hopes to collect 1,000 book bags by the end of the month and hand deliver them to USVI with a group of volunteers. She has organized the U.S. Virgin Islands Book Bag Drive through her business, Progressive Educators LLC, an educational resource company in West Orange.

Johnson, who also works as a substitute teacher in the West Orange schools, has been collecting the book-bags and lunch boxes in various local stores since last month. She and her volunteers set up a school supplies donation table at Staples in West Orange on Sept.

16, and at Kmart in West Orange on Sat., Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 24.

“They have offered to price their book bags at a discounted price to support our cause,” says Johnson. She hopes to be at the local Shoprite next, she says.

At the stores, folks have been buying bags at discounted prices and donating them to the drive to provide school supplies to the students affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September.

School was supposed to start Oct. 9 for St. Thomas and Oct. 16 for St. Croix but “because of category five [hurricanes], schools are not up

and running,” she says. Instead the schools are being used as shelters.

As of press time, she had already collected 82 backpacks and lunch boxes with Disney characters, markers, coloring books, notebooks, erasers and other supplies, she says.

Progressive Educators is also collecting can openers so USVI residents can open all of the canned goods being donated to them.

They ‘are not used to opening cans; they are used to fresh,” she says. Her goal is 100 can openers; they so far collected 25.

Donations of book-bags, lunch boxes, school supplies and can openers can be mailed to Progressive Educators, 200 Mt. Pleasant Ave., West Orange, N.J., 07052. A supply box has been placed right at the front door for those willing to drop off items.

The collections will continue through Oct. 31 so they can deliver items once school opens at USVI. As a former special education teacher in reading and language arts in St. Thomas from 1991 to 2009, Johnson has many colleagues, students, friends and family who have been affected by the hurricanes in the USVI. While “Essex County is my home,” Johnson says her she went to work in St. Thomas years back for a “change of pace.” Her plan to stay for one year extended for ten years, she says.

Elementary education and psychology major Erin Flohr volunteered at Academy Lower School in Verona, which serves children on the autism spectrum and with behavioral and related disabilities.

As a future teacher, Flohr found it rewarding to teach a child how to say a word, and said it was also a good experience to observe “how passionate and patient” the teachers were.

Another group volunteered at St. Francis Xavier School in Newark, turning a storage room into a music room. At first the sight of the jam-packed room was overwhelming, but as student Brandi-Lee Brochu found, in the end they said it was a good feeling to know they had finished the job and had gotten the room ready for the music teacher, Erin Fitzpatrick, a recent Caldwell University alumna.

students and faculty volunteered digging and turning over soil for the Caldwell Environmental Commission at the pollinator garden on Personnette Street. He summed up the day well for all the volunteers. Even if the work seemed mundane, he said, in the end it is important to think “about the impact it has on people and our responsibility to the world around us.”

Groups also volunteered at Film Academy 360, Caring Closet in Madison, Caldwell Public Library, St. Aloysius Parish, Caldwell, Our Lady of Czestochowa School, Jersey City; Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy, Calvary Lutheran Church, Verona; Kingsland Manor, Our Lady Help of Christians, East Orange; Caring Closet with Jersey Cares (Dress for Success), Spectrum360, Academy360 Upper School, and in campus clean-ups.

Caldwell Day is an annual tradition that the Caldwell community looks forward to. It was started

by President Nancy Blattner when she came to Caldwell in 2009.
