Newtown Again Following Traditional Tree Lightings Schedule By Shannon Hicks Newtown will once again hold three tree lightings this holiday season. All are scheduled for the weekend of December 6-8. The 35th Annual Ram Pasture Tree Lighting is scheduled for Friday, December 6. The event will begin with musical performances at 6:30 pm and continue with the tree lighting at 7. There will also be additional caroling, refreshments, and visits with Santa and Mrs Claus at the historic pasture along Elm Drive. In the hours leading up to this year’s event, Newtown Parks & Recreation employees will be placing luminarias around Ram Pasture and on nearby roadways leading to the historic property on Elm Drive. Parks & Rec has taken over the coordination and fundraising for this longstanding event. Donations of $10 each will cover one luminaria or one bulb. Checks should be made out to Newtown Parks & Recreation, with Tree Lighting Donation on the memo line, and mailed — with Tree Lighting Form on this page filled in — to Newtown Parks & Recreation, 8 Simpson Street, Newtown CT 06470. Forms and checks can also be dropped off at the Parks & Rec office weekdays between 8 am and 4:30 pm. begin at 4 pm. Activities will be centered around the area of Church Hill Road, Washington Avenue, Riverside Road, and Glen Road. Children of all ages are invited to meet Santa Claus, who will be arriving at 5 pm to begin visiting with attendees. Those who offer Santa a nonperishable donation for FAITH Food Pantry will be entered into a drawing to have the honor of lighting the trees that night. Karaoke will be ongoing in the area of The Glen, where one of two trees will be lit at 6 pm. The trees are on the corners of Church Hill at Washington and Washington at Riverside, opposite each other.
Caroling and more karaoke will follow after the two trees are lit. Faith at Newtown, at 4 Riverside Road, has also hosted a Live Nativity presentation during the special event in recent years. The Tenth Annual Hawleyville Tree Lighting and Toy Drive will then follow on Sunday, December 8. Residents are invited to gather at Barnabas Plaza, 23 Barnabas Road, for the one-hour event scheduled to begin at 5:30. Holiday festivities will take place, including performances by local dance students from Dance Etc. Hot chocolate, cookies, soda, and other light refreshments, including pizza from

Call For Volunteers: Friends Of Roxbury Library Planning Great Trains Holiday Show Annual Holiday Book Sale ROXBURY — The Friends of the Roxbury Library will have their used book store, The Next Chapter, open for extended hours on Saturday, December 7, for their second annual Holiday Book Sale. The Next Chapter will be open that day from 10 am until 6 pm so that people have plenty of time to warm up by the fireplace while wandering through the stacks and tables of books to find the perfect holiday surprise and also be able to enjoy other holiday activities planned in Roxbury that day. For those who enjoy running model trains, Wilton Historical Society’s very popular Great Trains Holiday Show — which attracts thousands of visitors every year — depends on a cadre of dedicated train engineers who indulge their love of model trains while bringing magic to children and their families during the holidays. Sensory Friendly ‘Christmas Story’ Performance Planned At Hartford Stage HARTFORD — The sensory friendly performance of A Christmas Carol — A Ghost Story of Christmas has become an important annual tradition at Hartford Stage. Now in its sixth year, the sensory friendly performance — designed to create an accessible, welcoming theater experience for children and adults with autism or other sensory-input disorders as well as their families and caregivers — will be offered Saturday, December 7, at 2 pm. Hartford Stage staged its first sensory friendly performance of A Christmas Carol — A Ghost Story of Christmas in 2014. Since then, more than 1,000 audience members have enjoyed the show in a safe, comfortable, and supportive atmosphere. Jennifer Roberts, the director of education at Hartford Stage, said the company’s goal is to create an environment that is welcoming and comfortable for children with sensory sensitivity and their children. “Caregivers don’t have to worry if their child needs to move around, make noise, or take a break during the performance,” Ms Roberts said. “We have some families that come back every year; it means a lot to us that this has become a trusted experience for them. We do everything that we can to make sure families trying it for the first time have that sense of safety and acceptance, too, so that they can relax and enjoy the performance.” While the script for A Christ-

mas Carol — A Ghost Story of Christmas remains the same, some of the show’s technical elements, as well as the theater environment, are modified to help make the experience safe, friendly, and comfortable for everyone. Lighting in the theater remains lit, but dimmed, during the performance to allow safe movement for guests in and out of the theatre. Special effects, such as
haze and strobe lights, are eliminated from the performance; and the volume of abrupt, loud sound effects is been adjusted. Theater staff, positioned on both sides of the stage, hold up green lanterns to signal audience members when potentially frightening moments are about to happen during the performance. Complimentary sensory support tools such as blankets, stress
balls, and ear plugs are also available for audience members who need them. A designated quiet area in the lower lobby is also available. Trained staff and volunteers are on hand throughout the performance to offer assistance. Free, downloadable resource materials — including a social story, character guide, and performance guide — can be accessed on the Hartford Stage
website (hartfordstage.org) to help prepare audience members for the show. United Technologies is the exclusive Presenting Sponsor. Jingle & Mingle For Litchfield Jazz Camp, First Weekend In December
LITCHFIELD — Jingle & Mingle, the Litchfield Jazz annual holiday fundraiser, is set for Saturday, December 7, at Litchfield Community Center. The event supports Litchfield Jazz Camp need-based scholarships. In the 2019 camp summer, $50,000 in scholarships was awarded. The evening’s featured performer this year will be the award-winning vocalist Alina Engibaryan. A Russian émigré schooled at Prince Claus Conservatory in the Netherlands, she won the coveted Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition in 2015. She now tours with the ten-time Grammy Awardwinning collective Snarky Puppy. Back from a 24-concert tour with the group to venues like the Monterey Jazz Festival, Ms Engibaryan will be backed at Jingle & Mingle by The Albert Rivera Quartet. Ms Engibaryan and Mr Rivera are both on the Litchfield Jazz Camp faculty. A talented student combo will open for the pros. Jingle & Mingle begins at

Litchfield Jazz Camp began in 1997 and serves between 350 and 400 students every summer. Up to a quarter of students receive need-based scholarships. Students from all over the United States and 12 foreign countries attend the camp to engage with world-renowned jazz musicians for a lifechanging music education experience. In addition to music, students learn about and practice physical fitness, have courses in college application and scholarship acquisition, money management, self-marketing, and a host of electives including ear training, sight reading, composition and more. The goal is to prepare the student for life. An immersive program, Litchfield Jazz Camp hosts beginning through advanced players. There is no pre-audition, and the camp is noncompetitive. The faculty includes Grammy winners, university professors, and all manner of performing and recording artists with strong educational credentials.

Budget-Friendly Tips For Smart Holiday Gift Giving
(BPT) The holiday season is full of celebration, social activities and spreading good cheer by exchanging gifts. The problem is, gift-giving can get expensive if you’re not making a plan and monitoring spending. A happy holiday doesn’t have to mean stressing about finances or going into debt. It is entirely possible to enjoy the holidays and save money with some smart strategies for gift giving on a budget. Create a gift list: Feeling pressure to get gifts for everyone? Thoughtfully consider who is on your list this year. While a gift may be appropriate for some people, others might simply prefer to spend some time together rather than exchanging gifts. Instead of a material gift, consider inviting someone over for lunch or plan a cookie exchange with friends. Make a budget early: Deciding on budget limits for your holiday gifts will help guide spending. Try creating an overall holiday budget and then a specific budget for each person on your list. Then, with gift list in hand and budget in mind, it’s easier to shop for appropriate and affordable gifts. In addition, by starting early, it’s easier to take advantage of sales and other promotions that can help save even more. Stop worrying about perfect presents: Worried about finding the ideal gift? Coinstar’s recent holiday survey (see sidebar) found that approximately one-third of people don’t recall what

Collect and cash in that spare change at a supermarket Coinstar kiosk to
boost your holiday budget. This can also be a fun activity for kids who can gather coins or dip into the family coin jar for spending money and then buy gifts for family members. Create a group gift exchange: For those who have a large, extended family or a group of friends they typically buy for, a gift exchange may be the answer. It’s fun and budget-friendly because the pressure of buying everyone a gift is released. Smart tip: Set a price limit per gift to
keep everyone in the same ballpark for presents and prevent any competition of one person outdoing another. Opt for services as gifts: Rather than giving a physical present, is there something you could do that the recipient would appreciate? Consider an act of kindness like cleaning a family member’s home or watching their children. If you have a particular talent, consider how that can be incorporated into a gift. Know how to play the piano? Offer to give children lessons. Own a snowblower? Offer to help clear a neighbor’s driveway after a snowstorm. Consider charitable donations: Giving to charity on behalf of someone else can be a nice holiday gesture. Whether it’s animal welfare, disaster relief, a children’s charity, or something else, think about what the person is passionate about and select an appropriate charity. The Coinstar holiday survey also revealed that if there were no obligations or expectations around gift-giving, about ten percent of people would give to charity. Coinstar kiosks in supermarkets allow users to donate change to certain charities, making it easy to put change to good use and give a meaningful gift. No matter what you choose, gift-giving can be meaningful and affordable. Let these ideas offer inspiration to stay on budget and shop wisely this holiday season.
Coinstar 2019 Holiday Survey Report Celebrating winter holidays such as Christmas and Hanukkah is much anticipated by many Americans. The annual Coinstar Holiday Survey among 2,002 adults found that eight in ten respondents (78 percent) said their feelings toward the holidays were happy, and about one-third (35 percent) said they love shopping for holiday gifts (“can’t wait”). In contrast, half of respondents reported that they are stressed about giving the right gift even though many do not recall what gifts they received last year. Michael Jack, vice president of product management and consumer experience at Coinstar, said the company’s annual survey offers “insight into consumer attitudes about the holidays, spending patterns, and budgeting practices. “This year’s results show that the stress meter is high for many, but we are pleased to know that most Americans are budgeting for holiday gift purchases and that a positive attitude toward the holidays prevails,” he added. Top Holiday Survey Findings Released in October, the top findings of the 2019 survey showed that most people find joy in gift giving, but early retail merchandising and searching for just the right gifts dampened moods. *Half (51 percent) stress about giving the
right holiday gift. Women are more likely to stress, with 56 percent reporting stress compared to men at 46 percent. *Nearly one-third (31 percent) did not remember what gifts they received last year; 38 percent of men reported not remembering last year’s gifts compared to 25 percent of women. *Two in five (38 percent) say an argument or disagreement would put someone on the “naughty list,” negatively affecting the gift they give. *Half (51 percent) are irritated by early retail holiday merchandising, a 15-point increase over the previous year (36 percent in 2018). *Nearly one in two (46 percent) are planning or considering cashing in spare change to help pay for holiday purchases ($71 on average estimated in spare change around the home). Gift Givers Spend More on a Holiday Gift than Other Occasions Additional Findings One reason holiday shoppers may be stressed about finding the right gift is that gift givers reported that they spend the most money for someone on a holiday gift (72 percent) than other occasions including a birthday or anniversary. Budgeting for gifts can be a stress reliever: 67 percent of those surveyed say they have a holiday gift budget. Two in five holiday shoppers (42 per-
cent) plan to spend between $100 and $400 on holiday gifts this year. Whether stressed or not over holiday shopping, the vast majority of respondents (87 percent) say it gives them more joy to give a gift than to receive one. Forgetting to give a gift last year does not go unnoticed by 13 percent of respondents who would add you to the naughty list. Less than ten percent of people surveyed say social media activity and political views of gift recipients negatively affect the gift they give. If obligations and expectations were removed from the gift-giving equation, half of the survey respondents said they would give gifts to family members only. About one in ten (11 percent) said they would give to charity; ten percent would either give no gift at all or buy a gift for themselves. Survey Methodology Coinstar commissioned Atomik Research, an independent creative market research agency, to run an online survey of 2,002 adults in the United States who give gifts to others in observance of a winter holiday. The margin of error fell within +/- two percentage points with a confidence interval of 95 percent. The fieldwork took place September 4-6, 2019.

Newtown Dancer Playing Sugar Plum Fairy In Music Centre ‘Nutcracker Ballet’ DANBURY — Danbury Music Centre’s 52nd production of Nutcracker Ballet is scheduled for the weekend of December 13-15, and a Newtown dancer has one of the key roles this season. Performances are planned for Friday, 7:30 pm; Saturday at 2:30 and 7 pm; and Sunday at 3 pm. All performances are in the auditorium of Danbury High School, 43 Clapboard Ridge Road. Tickets are $27-$35 and available at the box office at Danbury Music Centre, 256 Main Street in Danbury. Tickets can also be purchased through etix.com or by calling the music center at 203-7481716. Danbury Music Centre’s production began in 1967 and continues to be one of Danbury’s favorite annual traditions, anticipated by thousands of people. Danbury Symphony Orchestra, under
the direction of Ariel Rudiakov, will perform the music of Tchaikovsky. There are approximately 200 dancers in the cast and 20 snowflake singers. The performance is on a professionally lit stage with professionally built scenery and mostly all handmade costumes. Artistic directors are husband and wife team Arthur Fredric and Lisa Denton from Brookfield. The technical directors are Arnold Daley and Matt Ficinus from Danbury, and the lighting designer is Peter Petrino from Brewster. Danbury’s Nutcracker showcases talented dancers from throughout the greater Danbury area. The lead role of the Sugar Plum Fairy this year will be danced by Taegen Rose Smith from Newtown. Clara will be danced by Shae McGraw from Danbury. The role of Mother Ginger is performed by Mayor Mark Boughton.
Movie With A Cop: ‘Grinch’ At ETH, November 30 Newtown Police Department will host its Second Annual Movie With A Cop on Saturday, November 30. This year’s featured movie is The Grinch. The event will center around a 7 pm screening at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street. The first 100 children between the ages of 8 and 14 who are registered will be provided with movie snacks and a special gift. Parents and/or guardians may register children by contacting Newtown Police Officer MaryHelen McCarthy at maryhelen.mccarthy@newtown-ct.gov.
CVH Sanctuary Planning Holiday Event The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary will host an outdoor holiday event on Sunday, December 8. From 2 to 4 that afternoon, the public is invited to share the peace of the season while giving back to nature. Guests of all ages are invited to the property, 3 Old Farm Road, for the free gathering. There will be time to create edible
ornaments for wildlife and the lighting of the sanctuary tree. Guests will also be invited to enjoy hot cocoa, warm up by a campfire, and enjoy story time, which will feature a reading of The Night Tree by Eve Bunting. Registration is requested at cvhfoundation.org/event/the-giving-tree.
