Friends Of Booth Library Holiday Gift Sale Planned The Friends of C.H. Booth Library will present this year’s Holiday Gift Sale Saturday and Sunday, December 1-2, in the lower meeting room of the library, 25 Main Street.

Hours will be 9:30 am to 5 pm Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday.

Toni Earnshaw, publicity director for the Friends, says the event continues to grow annually.

“This sale becomes more popular by the year as patrons find new and like new books for everyone on their shopping list and are happy to discover a wonderful array of seasonal and nonseasonal gift items, as well,” she said.

In addition to the books, previous sales have included DVDs, VDs, puzzles, and other gift items.

Holiday Festival, Returning To Main Street December 2, Will Again Benefit NYFS The 33rd Annual Holiday Festival will be presented on Sunday, December 2, from 11 am to 4 pm, on and around Main Street.

The event is one of the area’s longest-running holiday events, and it benefits Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS). The 2018 festival will feature narrated historical trolley rides through the Newtown Borough, the Historic House walking tours on Main Street and surrounding streets, the Festival of Trees at C.H. Booth Library, poinsettia sales, Nutcracker Suite Ballet performance by students of Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet & Voice, a Holiday Tea, and more.

Candice Bohr, executive director of NYFS, says the event is “a beloved holiday tradition here in Newtown.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of Newtown Savings Bank as title sponsor,” she added.

“They continue to support our mission and initiatives throughout town.

“We are also very grateful for the homeowners that open their houses for us to host the Festival,” Ms Bohr continued. “There is so much history in Newtown, and we are glad these homeowners are able to share it with the community.

We will once again have many activities for all ages to enjoy!”

In addition to celebrating a family tradition that brings together many generations, NYFS will once again have The Polar Express running along Main Street. Children and families will have a great time while they take the train ride down Main Street to the sights and sounds of the season.

Tickets are $3, and they are a separate purchase from Holiday Festival admission. There is no presale for the train tickets; they will be sold the day of the event only.

C.H. Booth Library will also host some activities for children during the same hours, including a visit from Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and Lucy. Photos with the characters will take place downstairs in the library from 1 to 2 pm.

To complement the children’s events, there will be a Kids Tea from 11 am until noon, where children will be invited to enjoy a hot chocolate bar, hot cider, and

treats. Children will receive a visit from Mrs Claus and the Peanuts Gang, who will join all for a singalong.

Holiday Festival tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children, and $30 for a family four-pack (two adults, two children). Tickets cover most Holiday Festival events and will be on sale soon. They will also be available the day of the festival.

Tickets for those who would like to only attend The Nutcracker Suite are $8. Performances are scheduled for noon and 2 pm.

Proceeds from the Holiday Festival, including the Nutcracker Suitespecific tickets, will assist with financial assistance for programs and services. According to The Annual Retail Sales Forecast for the Holiday Season from Deloitte, retailers have their sights on sales of more than $1.1 trillion.

Bethlehem Christmas Town Festival, December 7-8 BETHLEHEM — The center of Bethlehem will turn into a Christmas Festival on the evening of Friday, December 7, and continuing Saturday, December 8.

Highlights this year include a Roaming Railroad train ride, a hay ride, more than 70 vendors selling handcrafted items just in time for holiday shopping, and a multitude of food choices to make everyone’s visit complete. The festival also offers strolling carolers, holiday characters, a bell choir concert, and Christmas cachets.

A visit to Bethlehem Post Office to send holiday mail has become an annual tradition for many families. There, a selection of 83 Christmas cachet designs are available to choose from to hand stamp holiday greetings before mailing them off to friends and family.

The Bethlehem Post Office has introduced a new cachet each year since 1938.

Festive designs to decorate holiday mail have been created by local residents, including artists and children.

A 5K Road Race will reopen the activities on Saturday morning. A 2-mile walk and a free quarter-mile Kids Fun Run will also be offered.

The festival surrounds Bethlehem’s town green, at the junction of Route 61 and Route 132. All the buildings and churches participating in the festival are brimming with activities and Christmas spirit.

The festival will run from 5 to 10 pm Friday and 9:30 am to 4 pm Saturday.

On Friday night at 6 pm will be the opening ceremony, where special guest Nicole Nalepa, WFSB Channel 3 News Anchor, will help Santa light the town’s beautiful 75-foot Christmas tree. Santa will stay for the balance of the festival, giving families the opportunity to take their own memorable photos.

Limited supplies of previous ornaments are also available for purchase.

There is plenty of free parking at the Bethlehem Fairgrounds, just north of town on Route 61, with free shuttle busses between the fairgrounds and the festival. There is no admission charge for the festival, either.

Free face painting, a free crafts workshop for children and their parents, and free musical entertainment throughout the festival are also part of the weekend offerings.

Nearby Attractions Bethlehem’s beautiful 18th Century Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden, while closed for the season, will be festively decorated and open for tours during the Bethlehem Town Festival.

Guides will be on hand to lead tours, and a family-friendly program will include raffles and a scavenger hunt.

Located at 9 Main Street North (Route 61), The Bellamy-Ferriday House will be open on Friday, December 7, from 6 to 9 pm; and Saturday, December 8, noon to 4 pm.

itan creche at The Abbey of Regina Laudis will also be open for visits. The creche is open daily, year-round, from noon to 4 pm.

The creche was given to the Abbey by artist and philanthropist Loretta Hines Howard, who also donated a similar creche to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The creche underwent a three-year renovation at the beginning of the century, reopening in 2008. In December of that year Shannon Hicks, writing in The Newtown Bee (“The Return Of A Renewed Treasure: Abbey Creche Is Once Again Open For Visitors”), described the display as “a remarkable ensemble, containing 68 figures, each measuring 14 to 17 inches tall. The figures, whose heads, hands, and legs are made of carved wood and terra cotta, are set up in a small village made primarily of the bark of cork trees that evokes the local surroundings of the Neapolitan artists of the time.

“Dressed in their original 18th Century costumes, the figures vividly portray the Holy Family, plus children, old and young women bearing gifts, merchants and peddlers, a princess and her whippet,

the Three Kings, and peasants and their farm animals. A multitude of cherubs surround the manger, and a trio of angels (who I could spend hours studying, they are so beautiful) are suspended above the scene.

“The display itself is 16 feet long and 6 feet deep. It is housed in The Bellamy Barn, an 18th Century structure that is itself of regional and historic interest.

The barn once belonged to the Reverend Joseph Bellamy, one of Connecticut’s earliest and most distinguished ministers,” the newspaper continued.

The Abbey Creche, also according to the December 2008 feature by Shannon Hicks, is believed to have belonged to Victor Amadeus II, King of Sardinia, and was most likely presented to him on the occasion of his coronation in 1720. After his death just two years later, the creche became the property of an Italian family of the nobility until it was brought to America in 1948.

“The creche was entrusted to the Abbey, according to panels now displayed within the barn, to protect and preserve in perpetuity for the public,” Ms Hicks wrote.

A second creche at the Abbey, The Lauren Ford Creche, is located in a small farm shed near the Lower Abbey Chapel.

This creche, created by the revered Connecticut artist Lauren Ford, is a rustic Nativity scene with figures of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph dressed in New England clothing.

The Abbey also opens to visitors its Monastic Art Shop, featuring all products of the monastics’ work on the land an in animal husbandry: crafts, beauty products, cheeses, jams and jellies, herbal teas, flavored vinegars, herbs, and honey.

The goal of the Christmas Tour Festival is to raise money to help support Memorial Hall, the community center in Bethlehem, by holding an affordable, familyfriendly Christmas Festival.

2018 Woman’s Club Ornament Celebrates Newtown’s Volunteer Fire Companies Newtown Woman’s Club, GFWC Inc, continues its 50th anniversary celebration with the presentation of its 31st annual pewter Christmas ornament.

This year, the club has chosen to honor “Newtown’s Five Fire Companies.” With a Maltese Cross as the centerpiece of this year’s design, the ornament includes the names of each of the town’s companies: Botsford, Dodgingtown, Hawleyville, Hook & Ladder, and Sandy Hook.

Town Historian Daniel Cruson has again researched and written a brief history of the five organizations. A copy of Mr Cruson’s essay is included with each ornament, which is enclosed in a sturdy plastic box. The orna-

ments are crafted by Woodbury Pewter in Woodbury.

The double-sided ornaments are $15 each. Proceeds from the sale of this ornament will be donated to local civic organizations.

The ornament can be purchased at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street; the office of The Newtown Bee, 5 Church Hill Road; the office of the Town Clerk, within Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street; and The Toy Tree, 14 Church Hill Road.

The 2018 Hearts of Hope-Newtown specialty ornament features a design by Sandy Hook artist Ashley Sieling. Proceeds from the ornaments sale will benefit the nonprofit with a mission to pay kindness forward through simple messages and images of hope.

2018 Hearts Of Hope-Newtown Specialty Ornament Available Pattie Ptak, president of the Hearts of Hope Newtown chapter, recently unveiled the charity’s annual 2018 Specialty Hearts design.

Created by Sandy Hook artist Ashley Sieling, the design is entitled “Skating on Ram Pasture Pond,” and the image features a pair of figure skaters on ice-covered pond in the center of Newtown. A small, silver ornament with the word Hope is tied to the ornament with white ribbon.

The Specialty Hearts are hand-decorated and packaged by scores of Hearts of Hope volunteers as part of annual fundraising activities.

Ornaments are $15 each, and all sales proceeds benefit Hearts of Hope. The ornaments can be purchased online at ourheartsofhope. org and in person at Sandy Hook Diner, 98 Church Road; and Millstone Ceramic Studio, 318 South Main Street in Newtown.

Hearts of Hope has local grassroots chapters in New Jersey and Connecticut, and volunteers can be found all across the country.

The Hearts of Hope Foundation Inc is headquartered in Port Charlotte, Fla. The unique keepsake gifts have been distributed to hospitals, military bases, nursing homes, police departments, and firehouses, as well as to individuals in need of

a message of hope.

Nearly 100,000 hearts have been distributed since 9/11. It is estimated that Hearts of Hope have been seen and experienced by almost one million individuals around the world.

The Newtown chapter hosts Paint With A Purpose painting parties on the second Wednesday of each month (as of November 2018) in the hall at Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook . All are welcome to attend the Paint With A Purpose events. All supplies are provided, from the palm-sized ceramic hearts that are decorated with simple messages and/ or images of hope to the paint and brushes used to create the messages. A donation of $5 per heart is requested, which covers the supplies fee for the nonprofit organization.

Reservations are requested, but walk-ins are welcome.

Newtown’s Tree Lightings

Newtown’s three tree lighting ceremonies will take place across the weekend of November 30-December 2 this year: The 34th Annual Ram Pasture Tree Lighting will be Friday, November 30; The 18th Annual Sandy Hook Center Tree

Lighting will be Saturday, December 1; and The Ninth Annual Hawleyville Tree Lighting will be Sunday, December 2.
