Newtown’s Tree Lightings Newtown’s three tree lighting ceremonies will take place across the weekend of December 5–7 this year.

The 30th Annual Ram Pasture tree lighting will be pm Friday, December 5.

The 14th Annual Sandy Hook Center tree lighting will be Saturday, December 6.

And the Fifth Annual Hawleyville tree lighting will be Sunday, December 7.

Details for each event will be announced in The Newtown Bee.

Middle Gate PTA Slates 2nd Annual Snowflake Festival Middle Gate Elementary School’s PTA has scheduled its 2nd Annual Snowflake Festival for Saturday, December 6, from 10 am until 3 pm.

The event will be held at the school and is open to the community.

The festival will include vendors, crafters, raffles, treats, baked goods, and a used ornament sale.

Kids activities during the event will include crafts run by Baum Orthodontics, Ben’s Bells Newtown, CrossFit Hook’d, EverWonder Children’s Museum, and Kidologie.

The Dayton Street Bridge in Sandy Hook is the subject of the 2014 Newtown —Bee Photo, Hicks Woman’s Club Christmas ornament.

Christmas Ornament Project Celebrates ‘Controversial Bridge’ Newtown Woman’s Club has selected the Dayton Street Bridge for its 2014 Christmas ornament project. Launched in 1988 featuring the town’s rooster weathervane as designed by Lorraine VanderWende, the project is a fundraiser for the club that is celebrating its 27th anniversary this year.

The ornament has once again been produced by Woodbury Pewterers, Inc. According to Town Historian Dan Cruson, the “controversial bridge was built in 1890 to connect the northern end of Dayton Street to Glen Road” in Sandy Hook. Mr Cruson, who has again written a brief history to accompany each ornament, said the primary purpose of the bridge was to shorten the route that rubber workers living on Dayton Street had to walk to work.

One of the principal backers of the bridge project was Judge Charles W. Dayton.

“His influence was substantial and was a key factor in getting the project realized,” Mr Cruson’s history says in part.

This year’s ornaments debuted, per tra-

dition, during the Labor Day Parade in September. They remain their standard size: an oval measuring roughly 2 inches high by 2½ inches wide.

Mary Antey coordinates the project for the club.

Ornaments remain $10 each, and are available for purchase at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street; Everything Newtown, 65 Main Street; Queen Street Gifts & Treats, 3 Queen Street; and The Newtown Bee, 5 Church Hill Road.

Proceeds from the sale of the ornament will be donated by the club to local civic organizations.

The library also keeps a number of previous ornaments available for purchase.

Earlier ornaments have included Middle Gate District School 1850, Newtown Middle School, The Budd House, The Little Theatre, Newtown Meeting House, Edmond Town Hall, Newtown General Store, The Yankee Drover, C.H. Booth Library, and even the logo of The Newtown Bee, among others. Last year’s ornament memorialized the Newtown Depot on Church Hill Road.

Newtown Holiday Festival Returning To Main Street, December 7 For the 29th year, Newtown Savings Bank will present the Newtown Holiday Festival, a family event that will offer events for all ages while also raising funds for Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS).

This year’s festival will be Sunday, December 7.

The event will feature Historic Trolley Rides, Holiday Tea, a Gingerbread House Contest, Yankee Candle sale, Jingle Bell Jam, Frozen Frenzy, Scholastic Book Sale, The Festival of Trees, The Nutcracker Suite Ballet, and much more. After a one-year hiatus, the very popular Historic House Tour is returning this year. Four homes on Main Street and one on East Street will be open for ticket-holders.

The festival will run from 11 am until 4 pm and most activities will take place at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.

Trinity Church’s annual service of Lessons and Carols will take place at the church, 36 Main Street.

Kaitlyn Johnson, community coordinator at NYFS, says the festival “always brings cheer and kicks off the holidays for Newtown.

“We strive to bring families together while celebrating the season,” she added. “We are especially excited that our historic house tours are back this year — a Holiday Festival favorite!”

Candice Bohr, executive director of NYFS, adds: “There are so many new and exciting activities we have added to the Holiday Festivals itinerary. New-

town Savings Bank, once again our title sponsor, will also be co-sponsoring the Jingle Bell Jam with Sippin Energy, which is a kick-off concert the night before the Holiday Festival.”

The Jingle Bell Jam will be performed Saturday, December 6, at 7 pm, in the Alexandria Room of Edmond Town Hall. The concert will feature favorite holiday tunes performed by Goldrush, a locally based band. Goldrush is a unique ensemble that performs original, traditional, and American roots music.

Admission to The Jingle Bell Jam will be a separate $10 ticket purchase, which can be done in advance or at the door. Those who attend Jingle Bell Jam can the take their ticket stub from that event to the festival on Sunday and receive reduced admission of $5 off an adult ticket.

Also new this year, The Frozen Frenzy will offer children the chance to make a craft based on the popular

Disney movie, enjoy a Frozeninspired snack, play games, sing karaoke, and even meet some of the characters.

Holiday Festival tickets are $10 for individuals and $25 for families (two adults, two children). Each additional child is $5.

Tickets are available at Everything Newtown, 61 Church Hill Road; and Newtown Savings Bank locations at 39 Main Street and 228 South Main Street (Sand Hill Plaza) in Newtown; 68 Stony Hill Road in Bethel; and 99 Federal Road in Brookfield.

Jingle Bell Jam tickets will also be available at the Newtown Savings Bank locations mentioned above, as well as NYFS headquarters, 15 Berkshire Road.

Newtown Youth & Family Services is dedicated to helping children and families achieve their highest potential. The nonprofit agency combines clinical services and positive youth development programs to provide a continuum of care to residents of the greater Newtown area.

NYFS is the designated mental health clinic for Newtown/Sandy Hook. It is licensed by the Department of Children & Families as an outpatient psychiatric clinic for children and by the Department of Public Health as a psychiatric outpatient clinic for adults and as a facility for the care or treatment of substance abusive or dependent persons.

NYFS is accredited by the Council on Accreditation.

Historical Society Christmas Fair MONROE — Monroe Historical Society’s annual Christmas Fair will be held at the One Room Schoolhouse at 311 Wheeler Road over two weekends.

This year’s fair will be Fridays, November 28 and December 5, 5 to 8:30 pm; Saturdays, November 29 and December 6, 10 am to 4 pm; and Sundays, November 30 and December 7, noon to 5 pm.

The event will again feature vintage sleds and wreaths decorated by MHS members.

There will also be a large variety of home decorations, gifts, ornaments and more.

This is one of the largest annual fundraisers for the historical society for the year.

(NAPSI) — While electric holiday decorations are a great way to spread the joy of the season, you have to make sure they are safe.

Whether you decorate indoors, outdoors, or both, there are certain electrical safety tips everyone needs to keep in mind: *Always purchase electrical decorations and lights from reputable retailers and make sure they have been approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL), or Canadian Standards Association (CSA). *Next, plan out your decoration arrangements so no outlet is overloaded and no cords are pinched by furniture or under rugs. *Once you are ready to decorate, inspect all electrical decorations for cracked, frayed, or exposed wiring. These can pose shock and fire hazards and should be thrown away. *When hanging holiday lights, do not connect more than three strings of incandescent lights. Alternatively, consider purchasing LEDs, which use less energy and let you safely connect more strings together. *When decorating outdoors, bear in mind that some common electrical products uses inside — such as holiday lighting or extension cords — may not be suitable for outdoor use. Check each product’s labels or packaging to determine whether it is for indoor or outdoor use. *Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), which are designed to protect from electrical shock and electrocution. If circuits are not GFCI protected, get portable outdoor GFCIs where electrical supplies are sold. They require no special knowledge or equipment to install. *Once lights have been safely put into place, continue to ensure electrical safety by turning off all electrical items before leaving the house or going to bed. *To reduce risk, it is also important to keep Christmas trees hydrated and at least three feet from heating equipment or any open flame, such as a candle or fireplace.
