A MOMENT WITH THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WORLD DIABETES DAY November 14th of each year is recognized as World Diabetes Day, and it serves as a reminder that diabetes is a global issue that requires a united response. It is an opportunity for us to come together as a community and support one another in adopting healthier lifestyles. We join hands not just as a community, but as a part of a worldwide effort to understand the implications of diabetes.

This condition affects us personally, impacting the lives of our friends, family and neighbors. It is with this awareness that I wish to share important information about the prevalence of diabetes locally, nationally, and globally, along with preventive measures that can be taken to safeguard our community’s health.

Within our beloved Newton County, diabetes is a health concern that deserves our attention. According to recent data from the Georgia Department of Public Health, the prevalence of diabetes in our county has been on the increase, with over 12% of our population affected. This equates to thousands of our neighbors facing the daily challenges associated with this chronic condition.

These figures underscore the urgency with which we must address diabetes within our local community. It is not just a statistical concern; it is a reality that impacts the lives of our family and friends. By recognizing World Diabetes Day, we collectively acknowledge the need for awareness, education and action to combat this growing health challenge in Newton County.

Zooming out to a national level, the statistics are equally alarming. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 34 million Americans are living with diabetes, with approximately 1 in 5 individuals unaware of their condition. These numbers not only reflect the immediate impact on individuals’ health but also the economic burden placed on our healthcare system.

In Georgia, more than 1.7 million people grapple with the challenges of diabetes. These figures are indicative of a broader trend where diabetes is becoming a major public health concern.

As citizens of the United States, it is our col-

lective responsibility to address this epidemic by promoting education, adopting healthy lifestyles and supporting initiatives that contribute to the prevention and management of diabetes.

Beyond our borders, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) reports that an astounding 537 million people globally are living with diabetes.

This number is projected to increase to 643 million by 2030 if concerted efforts are not made to address the root causes of this condition.

The impact of diabetes extends beyond individual health; it echoes through communities and nations, affecting economic productivity and straining healthcare systems. By recognizing World Diabetes Day, we align ourselves with the global community in acknowledging the importance of this issue and the need for collaborative action.

UNDERSTANDING DIABETES: TYPES, RISK FACTORS, AND COMPLICATIONS To effectively address diabetes, it is crucial to understand its variations. There are two leading types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed in childhood or adolescence and is characterized by the body’s inability to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is more common in adults and is closely linked to lifestyle factors such as genetics, age, physical inactivity, poor diet and obesity.

Complications associated with diabetes can be severe, affecting various organs and systems within the body. These complications include heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision impairment and nerve damage. By gaining a deeper understanding of diabetes and its potential consequences, we empower ourselves to make informed decisions regarding our health and that of our loved ones.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES: A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO COMMUNITY HEALTH Preventing diabetes and mitigating its impact requires a proactive approach at both the individual

As members of Newton County, we can take several important steps to promote a healthier community: Number one, adopting healthy lifestyles: Encouraging regular physical activity and maintaining a balanced diet are foundational steps in preventing diabetes. Physical activity not only helps control weight but also improves insulin sensitivity.

Number two, by promoting education: Knowledge is a powerful tool in the fight against diabetes. By spreading awareness and educating our community about the risk factors, symptoms and preventive measures, we empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health.

Number three, receiving regular health checkups: Routine health check-ups are essential for early detection and management of diabetes.

Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol can help identify potential issues before they escalate.

Number four, supporting healthy environments: Creating environments that promote healthy choices, such as access to nutritious food and safe spaces for physical activity, contributes to the overall well-being of our community.

Lastly, by destroying stigmas: Diabetes can be accompanied by stigma and misconceptions. By fostering open conversations and breaking down barriers associated with the condition, we create

a supportive environment for those living with diabetes.

From my perspective, World Diabetes Day serves as a reminder that we are part of a global community facing a shared health challenge. By recognizing this day, we express our commitment to supporting those affected by diabetes and promoting a culture of wellness within Newton County.

On this day, let us engage in conversations about diabetes prevention, share information within our social circles, and actively participate in local events that raise awareness about this condition.

As your Sheriff, I am committed to supporting initiatives that promote community health and well-being. I encourage each of you to take this information in this message to heart and consider how you can contribute to a healthier Newton County.

The administrative office hours for the Newton County Sheriff's Office are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding county holidays.

The Newton County Jail is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

NCSO SERGEANT RECEIVES “REX HAVOC, CRIME FIGHTER” AWARD The Newton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mandy Peters was presented with the “Rex Havoc, Crime Fighter” award at the 2023 Georgia Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (GALEFI) Conference in Carrollton, Ga. The “Rex Havoc, Crime Fighter” award is given to one instructor each year in recognition of the instructor’s exceptional performance; extraordinary dedication and service; and passion and commitment to achieving excellence.

Additionally, Sgt. Peters was nominated as the first female board member in the 32-year history of GALEFI at the 2022 Conference.

N NCSO HOSTS THE SHERIFF’S ANNUAL TOY RIDE On Nov. 18, 2023, Sheriff Ezell Brown and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office hosted its annual Toy Ride at The Church Covington in Oxford, Georgia, an initiative to raise funds and receive toy donations for families in need of assistance during the holiday season.

“I express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the businesses, organizations and individuals — especially my staff — who contributed their time and efforts to this year’s Toy Ride,” said Sheriff Brown. “Without you, we could not have succeeded in reaching our goals. I am forever grateful.”

This year’s Toy Ride was escorted by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office motors and Henry County Police Department motors. More than 80 motorcycle riders were in attendance, making it a successful holiday event. Following the law enforcement-led escort around the Newton County community, the motorcycle riders and their families gathered inside The Church Covington to enjoy the raffle, food and fellowship.

LIBERTY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TOUR THE NCSO FACILITY On Nov. 28, 2023, a class of three Liberty Middle School students were given a tour of the Newton Conuty Sheriff’s Office.

Prior to the tour, Sheriff Ezell Brown greeted the students in the NCSO Training Room and answered any questions they had about the law enforcement career field. The tour, which was led by Deputies Tim Smith and Michael Gregg, introducted the students to all the NCSO divisions, including Criminal Investigation, Administration and Detention.

LEADERSHIP NEWTON TOURS THE NEWTON COUNTY DETENTION CENTER Leadership Newton County (LNC) visited the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for “Public Safety Day” on Nov. 16, 2023.

Upon their arrival at the NCSO, the LNC class members were served breakfast in the First Responders Cafe, then they were greeted by Sheriff Ezell Brown prior to their tour of the Newton County Detention Center.

SHERIFF BROWN SWEARS IN SIX NEWLY-HIRED EMPLOYEES

On Nov. 20, 2023, Sheriff Ezell Brown administered the Oath of Office to six newly-hired employees during a ceremony held inside the Newton County Sheriff’s OFfice Training Room. The employees who took the Oath of Office were Deputy Sheriff Chardelle McFarlin, Deputy Sheriff Brandie Dunston, Deputy Sheriff Davon Sydnor, Detention Officer Donta Carter, Detention Officer Kevin Castillo and Detention Administration Technician Andrea Johnston.

SHERIFF BROWN AND THE NCSO WARN DRIVERS TO AVOID A COSTLY DUI ARREST BY NEVER CHOOSING TO DRIVE AFTER DRINKING Sheriff Ezell Brown, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety are asking everyone to make the holidays merry by making the decision to never drive after drinking.

The NCSO is joining sheriff’s offices, police departments and the Georgia State Patrol to reduce crashes, deaths, and injuries for the annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign from December 14, 2023 through January 1, 2024.

State troopers, sheriff’s deputies and police officers will step up enforcement during the holiday season and will take any driver they find to be over the legal Blood-Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level of .08 in Georgia to jail. No warnings. No call a friend to drive you home. No exceptions.

“All drunk driving deaths are completely preventable because they are all caused by someone making the wrong decision to drive after drinking,” Sheriff Brown said. “We are warning everyone now is the time to plan a sober ride before the party or celebration because our deputies will not be giving warnings to drunk and drugged drivers we find on the road.

Those impaired drivers will be getting a ride our detention center in the back of one of our patrol cars.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were more than 4,500 people killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in the United States in the month of December from 2017 to 2021 and 1,013 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in the U.S. in December 2021.

Federal crash data shows male drivers were four times more likely to be alcohol-impaired and involved in fatal traffic crashes than females in December 2021 and drivers ages 21-34 accounted for the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes in the U.S. in December 2021.

In Georgia, one out of four persons killed in traffic crashes in December from 2017 to 2021 involved a driver whose BAC was higher than the state’s legal limit and 70 percent of the fatal alcohol-impaired driving crashes in the state in December during this five-year period involved one driver with a BAC that was more than twice the legal limit.

It is estimated that a DUI arrest can cost up to $10,000 in court fees, fines, attorney fees, and higher insurance premiums. A DUI conviction may also cost someone their job or prevent them from being hired.

“The holidays are time for families and friends to celebrate but there are too many families who will be spending this holiday season missing a loved one whose life was ended by a drunk or drugged driver,” Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Director Allen Poole said. “If alcohol is going to be part of the celebration, make sure the plans include for a sober ride and do not let family or friends get behind the wheel if you believe they are too impaired to drive.”

The NCSO, GOHS, and NHTSA offer the following tips to help stop drunk driving: 1. Chose a non-drinking person to be the designated driver before going out.

2. Do not let someone you know get behind the wheel if they have been drinking.

3. Let friends know they can contact you for a sober ride when needed.

4. Those hosting a party where alcohol is served should make sure guests leave with a sober driver.

5. Always wear your seat belt because it is the best defense against impaired drivers.
