IT’S ALL ABOUT FAMILY The month of June contains an interesting variety of memorable holidays and other special occasions. Two specific holidays are: the Global Day of Parents and Father’s Day. The Global Day of Parents is observed on the 1st day of June each year. The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 and honors parents throughout the world. The Global Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents for their selfless commitment to children, inclusive of their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing such a tremendous relationship. In its resolution, the General Assembly also noted that the family possesses the primary responsibility of nurturing and protecting children, and that children, for the comprehensive development of their personality, should develop and mature in a family environment, as well as an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding. Parents play an important role in their children’s life. They are the pillars of support, guidance, and love. Family is where life begins and love never ends. Regardless of how old a child becomes, there is absolutely nothing more comforting and soothing than their parent’s arms. The role of parents in a child’s life is beyond the idea of prompting. Parenting requires action long be-
fore a child’s birth. Eventually, parents become their children’s alter ego and vice-versa. Parents should never cease to inspire and assist their children, and thus, they should strive to be the best teacher in their child’s life. It is important to understand that maintaining a good parent-child relationship is the first step towards wise parenting. From the birth of their offspring, parents should be aware of the reliability and accountability in their child’s life. The second extraordinary occasion in the month of June is Father’s Day. It is a day for children to exhibit appreciation for their fathers and father-figures. For adults, it is a day to show how much they love and appreciate the hard work of the fathers and husbands in their lives. Although many of us celebrate Father’s Day, we may not be aware of the history behind this tradition. Surprisingly, this holiday was not completely accepted initially; however, over time, people embraced the idea of the influence fathers had on their families, especially in their children’s lives. You might be asking: why do we celebrate Father’s Day? A thorough historical research of Father’s Day reveals that a young lady by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, was the founder of Father’s Day. She was one of six children
SHERIFF BROWN raised by her widowed father. Her mother expired during the birth of her sixth child. Since Mother’s Day was established in 1908, Sonora Smart Dodd desired to have an equivalent holiday for fathers. To promote her idea of celebrating fathers for a day, Sonora visited local churches and the YMCA and met with shopkeepers and government officials to gain support for this new tradition. As a result of her hard work, Sonora obtained success when Washington State celebrated the first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Even though Mother’s Day gained momentum immediately, it took years for Father’s Day to be nationally recognized as a holiday. In 1916 and 1924, Presidents Wilson and Calvin Coolidge showed support for Father’s Day. President Coolidge urged state governments to celebrate this holiday, but it was not until decades later that Father’s Day became recognized as a national holiday. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. In 1972, President Nixon ultimately established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day. Basically, children who have involved fathers are more likely to be healthy emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Despite the fact that children are confronted with crises, having an involved father assist them in regulating their behavior and feelings. It should be noted that children who have absent fathers are more likely to engage in at-risk behaviors. This is why there has been a considerable thrust for male mentors in elementary schools. While mothers have been recognized as the primary caretakers, times are definitely changing, as more women are offered additional opportunities in the workplace and fathers are becoming involved in rearing their children, rather than primarily focusing on providing for the family.

Fathers today work hard to provide for their respective families by supplying essentials, assisting with chores, and spending time with their children. Please understand that if your father has expired or is alive but absent, or if women do not have a husband and children, they can still honor a grandfather or male mentor. Think about another male that has positively influenced your life, such as a teacher, coach or pastor, to whom you can wish a happy Father’s Day. You can even celebrate a friend or a neighbor who is a dad on Father’s Day. Allow me to say that if your father is alive today, hug him or call him and let him know how much you love and appreciate him. I certainly miss my father. My father was a good man, and good fathers do three things: they provide, they nurture, and they guide. I want to close this message by offering a quote by the late Billy Graham. He said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Blessings to all of you and your respective families.

3rd Annual Back to School Golf Tournament Sheriff Ezell Brown and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office hosted their 3rd annual Back to School Golf Tournament at Ashton Hills Golf Course in Covington, Georgia, on June 16, 2022. This year, 60 golfers — a total of 16 teams — participated in the golf tournament, which was an increase from the previous year. Funds raised at the golf tournament are used to provide students with the proper tools to begin the school year through the Sheriff’s Office’s annual Back to School Giveaway. “I want to take the time to give a special thanks to all our sponsors, who contributed to the golf tournament to help raise funds for our annual Back to School Giveaway,” said Sheriff Brown. “Also, I thank the volunteers and my staff for going above and beyond to ensure the success of this year’s golf tournament. sheriff participates in the juneteenth parade On June 18, 2022, Sheriff Ezell Brown, Judge Cheveda McCamy, Sergeant Jack Redlinger, and Deputy Tim Smith participated in the Juneteenth Parade in Covington, Georgia. The parade, which was sponsored by Newton County Historical Committee on Black Heritage Preservation, began at Legion Field and traveled to the square in downtown Covington.
town hall meeting held at west side precinct On June 23, 2022, Newton County Commissioner Alana Sanders, Recreation Director Dwayne Mask, and Project Manager Jeff Prine hosted a town hall meeting at the Newton County Sheriff’s Office’s West Side Precinct. Sheriff Ezell Brown and Newton County deputies were in attendance at the town hall meeting, which was held to discuss the West Side Youth Facility.
Chief attends fire station 4’s ribbon cutting On June 29, 2022, Chief Deputy Jerry Carter attended the ribbon-cutting for Newton County Fire Station 4, located at 1200 County Road 213 in Covington. The Newton County Board of Commissioners approved the construction contract for Fire Station 4 on March 4, 2021.
dispatchers surprise deputies during police week For National Police Week, which was held May 14th through May 20th, the Covington-Newton 911 Dispatchers surprised Newton County deputies with a cookie cake, balloons, and snacks. Sheriff Ezell Brown and the Newton County deputies send their sincere gratitude to the dispatchers for this kind gesture!
