Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends of Sacred Heart, “Your example, even more than your words, will be an eloquent lesson to the world.”

– Madeleine Sophie Barat This year we are celebrating the 1818 arrival of Philippine and her companions to the Americas. Both St. Madeleine Sophie and St. Philippine Duchesne are examples of women whose personal prayer led them to create institutions to bring together girls who would be formed in the love of God. The focus of this edition of Très Bien is leadership. The “raison d’être” of Sacred Heart Schools throughout the world is to share St. Madeleine Sophie Barat’s charism and to make known the love of the heart of Jesus. Christ is the model of servant leadership. Generations educated at Sacred Heart have responded to this call to service and leadership. We celebrate our alumnae who inspire our girls today to participate in the transformation of the world.

Leadership takes many forms. In the following pages you will read about three of our distinguished alumnae, women who have become leaders in their fields – in business, education, and the arts.

We are also highlighting the accomplishments of some of our student leaders, as well as sharing examples of the work we do within the school to help build leadership skills.

One of the advantages of attending a school just for girls is that all leadership roles are held by young women. By graduation, we hope that our students are truly prepared to “lead by example,” as Madeleine Sophie has inspired us all to do. Young women are the heads of every committee, the officers of every level of student government, the captains of every athletic team, mentors to incoming students, and retreat leaders.

Often their desire to make an impact in the world spills over onto a much larger stage, as girls get involved outside of our Centre Street campus, seeking leadership positions and being called to the service of the wider community. Many will trace this passion back to the roots of their Sacred Heart education.

“Preach by example of your lives rather than by words,” said Philippine Duchesne, echoing Madeleine Sophie. “Example is the very best sermon.”

Goal of the Year: Focus on Goal Four Each fall, Newton Country Day School, along with Sacred Heart schools worldwide, selects one of the Five Goals of the Sacred Heart Network to be a focus of that school year. For the 2016-17 school year, NCDS chose Goal Four: the building of community as a Christian value. Throughout the year, there were many events, projects, and activities that reflected the importance of building community, both at NCDS and beyond.

The 2016 presidential election offered the opportunity to highlight the importance of respecting the political views of others in the community.

Led by history teacher Dr. Laura Baines-Walsh, the school incorporated discussion and a mock election, complete with an electoral college related to the number of girls in each grade, to inform and educate. In the wake of the election in November, junior class officers organized an open dialogue for anyone in the class who wanted to talk about the impact of the election results. Middle and Upper School as-

semblies also gave students a chance to discuss how the election might affect them in the future.

“In dance, we used Goal Four as a guiding force throughout the year,” said dance teacher Melissa Davenport. “Our folk dance unit was used across grade levels at the start of the year to bring the girls together. Our Vespers/ liturgical dance unit is another example of Goal Four in action, as our girls use dance as prayer to come forward as a community and celebrate the birth of Jesus.

And our Spring Dance Concert was themed directly after Goal Four. Each grade level learned an original work, and in some cases helped create the work, with the goal of building community and communicating how Goal Four transforms lives.”

Middle School Snack Shack

In February, guest speaker Father Greg Boyle visited an Upper School assembly to discuss Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world, which he founded in 1988 in Los Angeles.

Father Boyle spoke about the transformative power of a supportive community, while two of the men in his program related personal stories of past struggles and the opportunity they have been given to change the course of their lives. Father Boyles’ book, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, is read by juniors as part of the Grade 11 religion curriculum.

“After reading the book, students come away with new eyes of compassion and a deeper sense of how service invites us to stand with those on the margins of society, to see ourselves in kinship with them,” explained religion teacher Anne Theriault. “As Fr. Boyle writes, “there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’... only ‘us.’”

In Grade 6, students contributed to communities far from Newton. The sixth grade ran the Snack Shack, which sold healthy snacks such as fruit and homemade trail mix. Proceeds from the Snack Shack are intended for women in developing nations,

particularly Central Asia, Africa, and India, regions that the girls study in history class.

Students worked with Kiva, a nonprofit organization that establishes micro loans for women and families across the globe. The sixth grade’s first loan was directed to a woman in Kenya, who requested assistance purchasing a dairy cow to expand her milk business.

Upper School students in Mary Marley’s art class also extended the concept of community. In March the girls completed portraits of children from the Ukraine that were delivered to each child through The Memory Project, a nonprofit organization that invites students to create portraits of children who have faced significant challenges in their lives, such as neglect, violence, and poverty. In most cases, these portraits are the only likenesses that these children will have of themselves. The art students received photos of the children they painted the previous October.

Annual events and traditions such as retreats and class trips, service days and summer service projects, Grade 11’s Hesed service program, Blue-Silver induction, Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, Advent Angels, and Congé also contribute to Goal Four every year. u

Campus Highlights: In the Classroom and Beyond Photography Students Bring New Perspective to the Martin Center

Upper School Students, Teacher Recognized with Computer Science Awards

Girls in Introduction to Digital Photography created a photo essay of the Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center using abstract photography. Olivia Johnson ’17, Isabelle Jordan ’18, Charlotte Nunes ’18, Elisa Palmier ’18, and Kathleen Westover ’18 shed new light on how the Newton community views the latest addition to our campus.

“When photographing the Martin Center, I tried to find interesting perspectives that people do not normally see,” said Johnson. “We made it our goal to find reflections or patterns that are there every day, but in our fast-paced lives, we all tend to simply walk by or ignore.”

“The assignment allowed me to look at the Martin Center with new found respect and appreciation for the hard work and dedication that was put into making the architecturally beautiful building,” commented Jordan.

The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) recognized Grace Stillwell ’17, Madeleine Tango ’17, and Upper School Dean of Students, and math and computer science teacher, Martha Haddad for their active interest in computing and technology. Stillwell received an Honorable Mention in Aspirations in Computing, Tango received a Certificate of Distinction for Aspirations in Computing, and Haddad was the sole recipient of the 2017 Massachusetts Aspirations in Computing Educator Award.

“The awards add to the energy surrounding computer science in the Newton Country Day community,” said Haddad.

“Being a part of the NCWIT means we are now connected to a community of people excited about programming. My hope is that the program here will continue to grow.”

Musicians Perform at Eastern District, All-State Festivals On January 7, six Upper School girls performed in the 10th annual Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) Eastern District Senior Festival at Boston Latin School.

After auditioning, Hope Banach ’17, Claire Picken ’17, Caroline Murphy Racette ’18, Madeleine Tango ’17, and Mary Clare Tango ’20 were selected to sing in the Chorus, and Olivia Czech ’20 was chosen for the Orchestra. On March 11, Banach, Picken, Murphy Racette and Madeleine Tango also participated in the 63rd Massachusetts MMEA All-State Music Festival Concert at Symphony Hall.

Juniors Win Major Awards at Harvard and Boston College High School Model UN Conferences Nineteen members of the Model United Nations Committee served as delegates at the Harvard Model United Nations Conference (HMUN) in January. This four-day UN simulation asks delegates to examine complex global issues and present creative problem-solving perspectives to bring issues to resolution. The conference brought a record 3,300 student delegates and 500 faculty advisors from high schools around the world.

Catherine Brown ’18 became the first delegate from Newton Country Day to win a major award on a large General Assembly committee. She received an Honorable Mention Award (third place) for the World Conference on Women.

This award was the 44th won by a Sacred Heart student or faculty member at a Model UN conferences since 2007.

Former NCDS Model UN Cochair, and current Harvard University student, Catherine Brennan ’13 was the HMUN Under-Secretary-General for Administration. Brennan was the highest ranking woman on the Secretariat.

Five members of the Committee served as student delegates at the 29th annual Boston College High School Model UN Conference. The conference hosted

Students Honored with Scholastic Art and Writing Awards The work of 10 Upper School artists and writers stood out from thousands of submissions and were recognized by the 2017 Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. A panel of judges reviewed over 15,000 pieces of art work, and over 2,500 pieces of writing. Each entry is judged based on three criteria: originality, technical skill, and personal voice or vision.

approximately 500 students from 36 schools on 15 different committees who spent the day debating issues of vital global importance. At this competition, Brown won the Austin Martin ’95 Best Delegate Award, the highest award on her committee of 40 delegates, and one of the top 15 awards given at the conference. She represented Iran

on the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, which debated ways to improve the access to education for women and girls around the world. Model UN Co-chair Caroline Murphy Racette ’18 received the Outstanding Delegate award on her White House Summit on Freedom of Speech committee.

Science Roundup In March, seven Independent Research students participated in the Region V Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Fair.

Delaney, Kelly, and Nair joined Kristen McCormick ’20 and Elizabeth Weiss ’20 at the MA State Science and Engineering Fair at MIT in May. On April 22, 19 Middle School girls competed in the Region V Massachusetts Middle School Science and Engineering Fair at Regis College. The students qualified by placing in the top five of their respective grades at the annual NCDS Science and Engineering Fair. Lucy Fremont-Smith ’22 and Rebecca Simen ’22 were awarded the grand prize for top project at the fair for their research titled How to Train your Fruit Flies. Ten additional Newton girls advanced to the 68th annual Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair on June 3. The girls competed against 350 students presenting 289 projects from 105 middle and junior high schools from across the state. Students Earn Top Scores on National Latin and French Exams

Caroline Murphy Racette ’18 achieved a perfect score on Latin IV Poetry section of the National Latin Exam, making her one of 34 students to earn a perfect score at this level.

Suzanne Pearl ’22 achieved a perfect score on the Introduction to Latin level. She is the fifth Newton Country Day Middle School student to earn a perfect score on this exam. Only 299 of the 21,530 of students internationally who took this level achieved a perfect score.

An additional 40 of the 69 NCDS Upper and Middle School girls who took the National Latin Exam earned awards.

Katherine Delaney ’20 won the Platinum Award in the 2017 National French Contest/Le Grand Concours. The Platinum Award is given to students who achieve the top scores in the nation within their division.

An exciting aspect of Senior Projects is the opportunity to interact with and strengthen the relationship with Newton alumnae. Pan Mass Challenge Director of Fundraising Alison Rush ’04 supervised Margaret Mahoney ’17 for her project, and Nora Canavan ’17 worked alongside Elizabeth Burke ’05 in the Narcotics Unit at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

On the Stage On November 17 and 18, the Upper School presented Into the Woods. The musical included 18 actresses, three actors from local schools, two student stage managers, and a student-run technical crew.

On February 15 and 16, the Middle School presented Give My Regards to Broadway. The cast included 30 actresses, a student-run technical crew, and Upper School stage managers Carmen Esquivel ’19 and Maria Levine ’18.

Senior Girls Gain Experience Through the Senior Project Program

During the final month of senior year, girls have the opportunity to step out of the classroom and gain real world experience at a project site of their choosing. A tradition since 1972, Senior Project asks that girls work with faculty advisors and site supervisors who monitor and mentor them during this off-site internship. Upon completion of their internship, students create a presentation which describes the work they did and what they learned from the experience.

The 64 senior girls gained experience at a variety of organizations throughout the Boston area, including Boston Children’s Hospital, the Massachusetts State House, Simply Circus, Erin Robertson’s Studio (winner of season 15 of Project Runway), Fenway Sports

On the Field Varsity Field Hockey, Volleyball Top the EIL, Earn Bids to NEPSAC Tournament For the fourth consecutive year, the Varsity Field Hockey team became the Eastern Independent League (EIL) champion, going undefeated in league play with a record of 120, and an overall record of 13-3. In the Class C New England Preparatory School Athletic Council tournament (NEPSAC), the #4 seeded team fell 2-1 in overtime to Canterbury School. Elizabeth Warner ’17 was named EIL Player of the Year, and Athletic Director Kim Southall was named EIL Coach of the Year.

After back to back EIL titles, Varsity Volleyball shared the top of the league with Dana Hall School, ending its regular season with an EIL record of 10-1 and an overall record of 15-1. The team had an impressive post-season run in the NEPSAC tournament as the #3 seed in Class B, advancing to the semifinal round of play for the first time in school history. EIL Player of the Year Christina Conforti ’19 was also named team Most Valuable Player and led the squad in kills with an average of 14 per game.

The Middle School B basketball team finished its season undefeated with a record

of 10-0, and the Middle School A team finished the season with an impressive record of 16-1.

2017 was an exciting year for our Varsity Squash team, as it was the inaugural year of squash being played on campus with the addition of the Martin Center.

The Varsity Softball team (8-4, EIL: 7-2) won Pool A of the EIL Tournament for the first time since 2012. Co-captain and starting pitcher Delia Levine ’17 was named EIL Player of the Year in addition to being honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Varsity Golf captain Patrice Power ’17 won the Pippy O’Connor Independent School Girls’ Golf Classic 9-Hole Division for the second year in a row. Power, who posted a low score of 45 at the tournament, also led the Varsity Golf team to an undefeated season.

The Sailing team finished its season with an impressive haul of trophies and regatta appearances. As first-time attendees at the New England Sailing Championship Qualifier, the sailors earned five first place finishes in 18 races.

With these results, NCDS qualified for

the New England Championship Regatta for the first time in school history.

The season’s overall results received recognition in the local sailing league on the Charles River, with the team winning the First Place trophy overall and in the first and second boat categories. u

Network Connections As an active member of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, Newton Country Day is part of a worldwide community of students and educators. Through the Network Exchange Program and Network Summer Service Projects, girls from Newton are able to acquire a global perspective that is a true asset to a realistic understanding of the world.

During the 2016-17 academic year, 28 girls from the sophomore and junior classes participated in the Exchange Program, visiting 10 different countries.

“The exchange program has been one of my favorite experiences at school,” said Kaitlyn Bradshaw ’19, who hosted a student from Madrid’s Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Rosales. “When Roció arrived, she immediately became part of my family and the NCDS community. What I most cherish is the new connections I made with Roció and her family. I not only feel like I have a family here, but now I have one in Spain, as well.”

“Having the privilege to live and study abroad allowed me to learn a lot about myself,

experience another culture, and develop friendships to last a lifetime,” said Lindsey Mahoney ’18, who visited Australia, hosting a student from Melbourne’s Sacré Cœur. “That is the ultimate learning experience.”

Seventeen girls and three faculty members joined other Network schools in the United States for service projects over the summer.

These service opportunities ranged from “Rebuild Nola” in New Orleans to “Juvenile Justice” in Chicago to “How Organic School Farms and Gardens Can Help Feed the Planet” in Atherton (Calif.). Many girls participate in multiple trips before they graduate.

“My experiences with the Sacred Heart Network Summer Service Projects have been so significant to me because they have pushed me outside my comfort zone,” said Clara Parsons ’18. “I made lifelong friendships, better understand different social injustices, possess a strong drive to constantly fight for people facing these injustices, and actively seek a way to improve the world around me.”

In July, five Upper School girls went to Missouri for the Sacred Heart Network Spirituality Forum, which celebrated the life and legacy of Philippine Duchesne. More than 360 participants from 24 countries attended the Forum, which was held at Saint Louis University.

“I loved the opportunity I was given to immerse myself in Sacred Heart culture and history,” said Victoria Lynch ’18. “We worked on the skill of dialogue to better connect and understand people from different backgrounds and opinions, which is so crucial in today’s political climate. We also had so much fun, and I am grateful that I was given the opportunity to go.”

During the school year, visitors from our sister schools in Montreal, Taipei, and Lake Forest (Ill.) stopped by to see the school, furthering our Network connections. Varsity athletic teams compete against Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich (Conn.) each September, while seventh graders from the Greenwich school visit annually on their class trip to Boston to enjoy activities with our own Grade 7. u

Graduation ON THURSDAY, JUNE 8, Newton Country Day held its 137th Graduation in the Sunken Garden. Wearing white dresses and carrying red roses, the 64 members of the Class of 2017 were welcomed to our alumnae community.

Following the procession into the tent, Headmistress Sister Barbara Rogers welcomed family and friends. Class president Sarah Devlin ’17 gave the Invocation before Madeline Levangie ’17 delivered the Mary Quinlan Salutatory Address.

“The Class of 2017 has many strengths: teamwork, passion, generosity, and love. But in my opinion our greatest strength is our diversity,” noted Levangie. “We are not only diverse in character but in our talents and what drives us. When we come together, we are incredibly powerful. We are bound together by our love for one another and our drive to be the best class that Newton Country Day School has seen since 1880.”

Following Levangie, Alexandra Rizio ’02 delivered the Graduation Address. Rizio is a Supervising Attorney at Safe Passage Project in New York City, where she represents unaccompanied immigrant children facing deportation. She has worked as a human rights advocate and lawyer domestically and abroad. A graduate of Columbia University and Fordham Law School, she is also a guest lecturer in immigration law at New York Law School.

“At its most fundamental, the reason that I do my work is because of the principles that I was taught as a student here at Newton Country Day,” said Rizio. “I do this work because I believe strongly in the concept of standing in solidarity with the poor and the marginalized.”

When encouraging the Class of 2017 to help make changes in the world, Rizio advised them to not get discouraged, saying, “It’s a slow process. Change won’t happen overnight. There will be days, weeks, months, when you’ll ask yourself if you’re really doing anything at all. But then remember, the arc of the moral universe needs you to throw your weight onto it.”

After the conferring of the diplomas, Alice Husson, RSCJ Prize recipient Patrice Power ’17 was next to take the stage to address her classmates. Head of the Upper School Kathleen Scully Hodges distributed the senior prizes before Claudia Durbin ’17 delivered the Janet Erskine Stuart Valedictory Address.

“Our time here is only of value if we take the mission of the school seriously and put the Five Goals into action in our lives,” said Durbin. “We will be brave. We will be fierce in defending our values.

We will be ambitious. We will not be perfect, but we will love perfectly. We will love unconditionally.”

The Clare McGowan Prize was given to English teacher Emily Horwitz before the Sacred Heart Goal Awards were distributed. Chairman of the Board of Trustees Christopher Kelly P’05 ’07’12’16 delivered the closing prayer. After the recessional, the newest alumnae lined up outside of the tent to receive hugs and well wishes from faculty and staff members before joining their friends and family in celebration. u

Chapel Reflection: Ingrid Farrell ’19 (excerpts) Luke 17:20-21, The Coming of the Kingdom of God In our world today, we like to talk about living in the moment, but we are trapped in a society that demands all of our attention, whether it’s the constant stream of ads from our phones, the never-ending Instagram and Snapchat pics, or the seemingly bottomless pit of homework that our bags contain.

Eventually it all starts to get to you: eat, sleep, work, media; eat, sleep, work, media; laugh with your friends, joke about your stress; eat, sleep, work, media. Our minds are constantly racing; our bodies are constantly chasing that extra hour of sleep, rest, relax…and repeat; our heads are always down, our screens are always on; and the world is always spinning with the fog of exhaustion. We are so focused on that future step that before we know it we’re racing through life at a hundred miles an hour, and then one day we’re sitting quietly on our doorstep—age 80 if we’re lucky—asking ourselves, “What is the point of our lives if it is just that same cycle over and over again?”

Do you know what’s interesting? In the original passage, the Greek word έντός actually literally translates as “within,” not “among.”

And I like that translation a lot better: “The Kingdom of God is within you.” Jesus said this to the Pharisees when they asked him when Heaven would come, but the word “when” implies time: How long must we wait, God? How long must we work until we find peace—until we find Heaven? No, he replied, There is no waiting: “The Kingdom of God is within you.” Heaven is not a physical place in a fixed time at the end of the world; it is a state—a state of yourself—a state of

Faculty Profile: John Sullivan John Sullivan is a self-described people person, as was his mother before him. “Growing up in a working class family in Cambridge, we had nothing, but my mother had a kitchen table that saw endless streams of people come in to sit, talk with her, and ask for her advice. People really trusted her because she was the most understanding, loving person — to anyone, to everyone,” recalled Sullivan.

Sullivan’s “kitchen table” at Newton Country Day School was his music room, and when he spoke of his mother’s people-centric nature, he might as well have been speaking of himself. Endless streams of students and colleagues alike have flocked to Sullivan for a trusted ear and sound advice. Following the 2016-17 school year, Sullivan retired. The entire NCDS community will miss him and all of the ways he has enriched the lives of so many on campus.

“As my chorus teacher, advisor, confidant, and great friend, Mr. Sullivan was the person I turned to

most when I needed help — not just in academics but in all areas of my life,” said Sarah Duehren ’16.

“He is the perfect example of why I love NCDS so much: it is the place where one can foster close and significant relationships not only with peers but also with faculty and staff. Mr. Sullivan shaped me into the musically inspired person that I am now and helped me learn about and trust myself in all other aspects of my life.”

“He always listened to things I was struggling with and provided thoughtful advice and feedback,” added Jane Mostue ’05. “In 2015, he sang at my wedding, a cherished memory for my husband and me, and we remain in touch to this day.”

Sullivan served joyously as Newton’s chair of the performing arts department — a position he held for the entirety of his 15 years at NCDS. He was also a faculty advisor with a consistently full roster of advisees. He was the choral director for Chorale

and Schola Cantorum and coordinated Chorale trips that spanned the globe from Montreal to Ireland. Above all, he was a true teacher whose goal has always been to “establish a real bond that is going to last a lifetime — that is important to me; Vespers to have a lasting positive impact on a student.”

As proof that Sullivan is at heart a peopleperson, consider the girls he advised. One might expect a music teacher to have only musicallyinclined students seek him out as an academic advisor, but that could not be further from the truth. Sullivan’s list of former advisees is as diverse in their academic pursuits as is the student body at large. “I loved it,” said Sullivan about advising non-musical students. “I love that they sought me out even if they didn’t have me for a class, because I got to know a person who is not musical, and I got to experience NCDS in a totally different way; not through music but through a completely different lens. It was fascinating.”

“Fascinating” is a word that can be used to describe many elements of Sullivan’s journey to NCDS. In 1965, St. Paul Choir School in Cambridge visited Sullivan’s fourth grade elementary school classroom and auditioned all of the boys.

Five of them made it to the next level and of those only Sullivan was admitted. He attended St. Paul’s from fifth through eighth grade and describes these as his most formative years. “That was really when I learned most of my musical training.”

He continued to sing with St. Paul’s in the Men’s Schola after graduation. From there, he was admitted to the highly regarded undergraduate musical program at what was then the University of Lowell; he taught and sang with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and then studied with the composer John Oliver, who introduced him to Edward Zimbara, the well-known vocalist and professor at the University of Tennessee. There Sullivan obtained a master’s degree in vocal performance and began his opera singing career, which would take him to the St. Louis Conservatory and eventually back to Boston.

Sullivan remembers first setting foot on the Centre Street campus on August 8, 2002 for his initial interview. At that time, the music department was made up of four faculty members. Among the accomplishments of which he is the most proud, Sullivan includes the growth of the music department, now the performing arts department, which oversees music, dance, theatre, and instrumental music and has doubled in size. Speaking specifically of the instrumental program, Sullivan said that “it was incredibly important for us to create the opportunity for students to bring their outside-ofschool interests into the fold and share them with the community.

“I was very lucky because Sister Rogers, Mrs. Hodges, and Mr. Badini all have very deep-rooted respect for the arts,” Sullivan continued. “They understand how tremendously important the arts are to the growth and development of Middle and Upper School students. by the administration. Beyond that — they are my friends. I treasure these relationships beyond measure and will miss them immensely.”

While teachers tend to scatter across the country after graduation, Sullivan celebrated his retirement by leading the Chorale trip to Ireland, where the group sang O Magnum Mysterium by Cristobal de Morales at Kylemore Abbey in County Galway, among other performances. Sullivan and his Chorale put in extra rehearsal time prior to the trip in order to best represent the NCDS arts community abroad. He admits that he will miss travelling with Chorale and being in historical and mystical places such as the Ring of Kerry. What else will Sullivan miss about this community of which he

has become such an integral part? “My kids! These students are like my kids — I’d do anything for them. I will miss them every day. And, of course, making beautiful music.” u

Women in Leadership: Student Leaders Summer Ryan ’21 and Niamh Mulligan ’21: Middle School Leaders

As Middle School co-presidents for the 2016-17 academic year, Summer Ryan ’21 and Niamh Mulligan ’21 took their roles very seriously.

The duo quickly decided that as leaders in the Middle School they wanted all of the girls, no matter their age or grade, to see them as peers they could look up to, talk to, and depend on. Their goal? To make sure all girls had the same positive experience in the Middle School that they did.

Mulligan and Ryan’s presence in the Middle School was felt as soon as you entered the third floor. There, an eye-catching bulletin board with their names at the top displayed their hopes for their peers. These inspiring messages and kind words from the co-presidents were hard for even the smallest Middle School student to miss.

“We should all grow in self-confidence just like Goal V says,” reads a note from Mulligan. “I want to help each of you find where you belong here by being open, approachable, trustworthy, and kind.”

A note from Ryan adds, “Everyone has something that is a little different about them, I know I do. We

should embrace our similarities AND our differences because those make us who we are.”

Being encouraging and friendly didn’t stop with the words on the bulletin board. Mulligan and Ryan were often seen laughing, smiling, with their arms around girls of all grade levels. The duo also led in more formal ways, including moderating morning announcements and reading a daily reflection during Lent.

“I like to be a person who encourages others to be the shoulder for somebody to lean on or to make friends with someone they never thought they would,” said Mulligan. “You never know what small gesture might alter someone’s experience for the better.”

“The students and faculty in our Middle School treat each other with such compassion and care and accept us for who we truly are,” Ryan remarked.

“Our class is so close, we want the girls in the grades below us to see us together and have the same closeness with each other.”

Mulligan described being a leader as “positively inspiring others to do good.” She believes that spreading positivity can have a domino effect. “I want to be the domino that sets off a chain of good deeds.”

As members of the Class of 2021, Mulligan and Ryan’s time in the Middle School is over, as they are now the newest members of the Upper School.

While they have not yet figured out exactly how they will continue to be strong influences on their peers in an official capacity, for now they are willing to sit back and learn about how they can best flex their leadership muscles in the Upper School.

“We look to the older girls as our role models now,” said Ryan. “We watch how they lead and how they are positive influences so that we can be, too.”

Mulligan commented, smiling. “I hope by junior year we are ready to run for class office again together.”

Hope Banach ’17: Leader in Performing Arts Throughout her four years at NCDS, Hope Banach ’17 worked hard to discover and develop her talents. As a ninth grader, Banach had an interest in music and theatre. Now a newly minted alumna, she is in her first year at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, where she is studying in the highly selective Voice and Opera Program.

“Before coming to Newton, I had no idea that opera was even an option,” said Banach. “Taking every opportunity to sing and study music at NCDS, and guided by incredible faculty like Mr. Sullivan, I found my passion.”

This realization empowered Banach to become a leader within the NCDS arts and music community. “Leadership at NCDS is not about focusing on the self,” Banach continued. “Go after what you love and become as knowledgeable in the area as you can, so that you can give to others; share with them what you have learned. Leadership is really about looking out toward others and helping them become the best they can be. In rehearsals for shows at NCDS, it was fun to be able to mentor other students interested in music and theater and help them find what inspires them.”

During her time at NCDS, Banach participated in musical theatre, the Massachusetts Educational Theatre Guild’s one-act play festival, and voice and instrumental music. Banach sang with Chorale, Schola (an audition-only group), and Heartbeats, the a cappella group she co-led her senior year. Banach also

co-led the Film Committee, a club that she founded in her sophomore year along with Diana Lee ’17.

“Co-founding the Film Committee was a tremendously valuable experience because it acquainted me with the administrative side of leadership,” said Banach. “We wrote a proposal and met with (Dean of Upper School Students) Ms. Haddad about starting the committee and recruiting a faculty advisor. We saw it through from start to finish.”

Co-founding a committee also gave Banach a chance to “advocate for myself and for my ideas.” Banach credits NCDS with providing her with the tools to develop the self-advocacy skills that she will take with her to college and beyond.

“There have been so many opportunities for me to use my voice at NCDS. Not just on a stage – but really to advocate for myself or for an interest that I have,” explained Banach. “For example, a few of us really wanted to perform Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods for the annual musical. Sondheim’s scores are famously complex, but we were game for the challenge. We successfully lobbied the performing arts faculty, who were more than willing to guide us through such a complicated but exciting production!”

Banach’s performance as Cinderella in the fall 2016 production of Into the Woods was one of the highlights of the show.

Now fully immersed in her freshman year at Northwestern University, Banach is enjoying her voice and opera studies. “I remember visiting Northwestern and feeling an overwhelming sense of camaraderie and cooperation, coupled with a very hard-working student body. I didn’t feel that combination in other colleges and universities that I visited, and I have Mr. Sullivan to thank for pointing me in this direction,” Banach said. “Even non-music faculty had a hand in helping me follow my passion.

Mr. Berman would always go out of his way to tell me when operas at the Met (Metropolitan Opera House) were playing at Legacy Place. At NCDS, I always felt supported.

“Many people don’t consider opera a viable career, but if you love it and it inspires you, I don’t see why you shouldn’t go for it. Thanks to my time at NCDS, I am not afraid of trying, I am not afraid of failing, I am not afraid of raising my voice and putting my ideas out there in the world.”

Valedictorian Claudia Durbin ’17 was a leader in the classroom, on the water as part of the Varsity Crew team, and with younger students as a member of the Peer Education Committee. “I’ve always figured that if I was going to be involved in some-

thing, I might as well do it to the fullest; give it my all,” said Durbin.

“I started in Peer Ed my sophomore year, and my favorite part was working with the Middle School girls and leading small group discussions,” Claudia Durbin ’17 at the National Junior Durbin continScience and Humanities Symposium ued. “I think that was what I enjoyed the most, because I remember being in Middle School and Peer Ed coming to talk to us and leading what could be ‘squirmy’ conversations. Being on the flip side and leading those conversations was such a great opportunity to connect with the younger girls.”

Durbin’s leadership permeated her academic life in the Upper School, as well. Reflecting on her science studies, Durbin credits NCDS for being “a place where I had so much support. I didn’t need to worry about not having an infrastructure to develop my ideas. At Newton, if you have an idea and you pursue it with your all, you have the encouragement and the resources to bring that idea to fruition.

“For me, it all started the summer before freshman year when my father had an allergic reaction to peanuts and I thought ‘Okay – I’m going to cure peanut allergies!’ In 9th grade I did an independent research project as an elective, and I created a test to identify hidden peanut proteins. I earned an Honorable Mention at the Massachusetts State Science Fair that year and was bitten by the research bug. Ultimately, I didn’t cure peanut allergies, but that idea put me onto an exciting path.”

Connected by NCDS science faculty to Boston University endocrinologists, Durbin worked in their endocrinology lab on an original research project using LED lights to produce Vitamin D in human skin. “I started this project with no expectations and when my results started coming back better than I could have imagined, I was beyond excited. At the beginning of senior year, Ms. Coates encouraged me to put my research into a competition.”

In March, Durbin placed first at the Southern New England Region of the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. She went on to compete at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in San Diego, where she won second prize in the Chemistry Division for her work designing an LED device to prevent Vitamin D deficiency diseases.

“This was something I had worked on for fun for two years so to win second prize at Nationals was just a great capstone for me.”

The last four weeks of her senior year, Durbin worked at Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company in the Neuroscience Department for Senior Project. She is the only high school student Pfizer has ever hosted. Durbin credits Dr. Tam for connecting her to Pfizer during her junior year.

At Pfizer she worked on a cross-site study examining a SHANK mutation in rats that model autism. Her job was to keep track of the different behaviors of rats and how each was affected when administered a certain drug. “The best part of this experience was collaborating with people from all over the world who were doing parallel studies,” recalled Durbin.

Now a Dartmouth freshman, Durbin wants to encourage NCDS students to develop their leadership skills through FA L L 2 0 17

an activity about which they are truly passionate.

“Don’t think about the leadership aspect first.

Learn as much as you can about what you love, and everything else will follow. At NCDS you have the support and resources to make something of anything, as long as you work hard.”

Fay Green ’17: Orientation Leader The orientation leaders program at Newton Country Day aims to build a vibrant, inclusive school community, driven by members of the senior class. The girls chosen to be ninth grade orientation leaders work specifically with the new faces of the Upper School to help them make a smooth transition. This group of seniors instills a sense of confidence, inspires girls to understand and live the Five Goals of Sacred Heart Schools, facilitates their getting to know one another, and cultivates a strong class identity.

“We have seen the benefits of the orientation leadership program in the success of our ninth and tenth graders during their years of adjustment as they learn to navigate the Upper School,” said Director of Academic Technology Melissa Bleakney, a member of the ninth grade faculty team who has worked closely with senior orientation leaders over the years. “The leaders have been significantly stronger recently because they had strong leaders as Fay Green ’17 and her orientation group

ninth graders, so we are starting to reap the benefits of our own hard work. The legacy of dynamic leadership is extremely powerful and quite evident in our community.”

For Fay Green ’17, this legacy of leadership is something that she knows well. Green’s bond with her orientation leader when she was a freshman is as strong now, if not stronger, than it was in 2013.

“I see my ninth grade orientation leader Natalie Henderson ’14 at least two times a year to catch up on my life at school, life at home, and on her life as a student at Harvard. When we were both at NCDS, she served as an older sister to me, so it feels good that we remain in contact. I know I can ask her about anything, and she will always be there for me.”

Wanting to pass on the bond she felt with her leader, Green became an orientation leader herself during the spring of her junior year after a

competitive application process that included a group activity in which each student took a turn running a meeting. The students who are selected for this leadership program each year participate in training in the spring and summer to prepare for mentoring the younger girls. They accompany the ninth graders on their September orientation trip to the Toah Nipi Intervarsity Retreat Center and in New Hampshire and to their winter retreat, and they participate in other, less structured activities throughout the year. They are always willing to share their experiences and insight, whether it is about how to approach exams for the first time or whether to bring a date to the winter semiformal.

On the first day of school last year, you could hear Green and her fellow leaders chanting and singing in front of the main building during drop off.

These enthusiastic seniors were easy to pick out of the crowd as they waved welcome signs and quickly approached girls arriving to campus for the first time as an Upper School student.

At the heart of the orientation leaders’ work is the desire to help every student in the class feel known, loved, and welcome in the school community.

“The relationships with other students are definitely the main benefit of the program,” Green continued. “I wanted to be someone the girls could look up to for guidance. While I enjoyed the opportunity to serve as a leader, we also learned a lot from each other.”

As a Newton Country Day student, Mariane St. Juste ’17 was just as likely to be found mentoring Middle School students in the library after school as she was participating in a sit-in for social justice in Washington, D.C. St. Juste is a well-spoken, driven advocate for those in our society whose voices often remain unheard, but she was also a gentle, caring mentor for girls in her own community who simply needed the perspective of an older student. The leadership skills she employed in both roles are similar.

“I wanted the Middle School girls to be able to rely on me and not think of me as a scary senior,” she said. To cultivate that trust, St. Juste actively listened to the Middle Schoolers. “I used to be in their shoes, so I was able to answer questions ranging from the sixth grade trip to Camp Hazen to the college application process.”

Throughout her six years at NCDS, St. Juste focused her interests and leadership development on social justice issues. “I became interested in social justice when I was in Middle School. I started to read about the Sacred Heart Network Summer FA L L 2 0 17

Her commitment to service is undeniable, and these opportunities allowed her to develop her leadership skills in different settings away from campus.

Practicing her public speaking skills has also helped St. Juste emerge as a leader. “Throughout my years at NCDS, I developed my ability to speak publicly, which I didn’t like at first,” she admitted.

“The more I practiced and trusted myself, the easier it has become.”

During her senior year, St. Juste took her public speaking skills to the next level after applying and being accepted to attend a three-day social justice conference in Washington, D.C. “Religion teacher Dr. Potter and history teacher Ms. Ruane took eight students, including me, to the Ignatius Family

Teach-In for Social Justice. I was nervous because I knew that on the third day, I would have to speak directly to Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey in his office. I spoke to him about immigration, and we discussed ways that I feel immigration policy in America can improve. Walking out of his office I felt empowered and like I made a difference.”

In addition to her activism and engagement outside of NCDS, St. Juste was also an incredibly present and relied-upon leader in school. She was a co-head of the PRISM Committee (People for a Racially Inclusive Society of Multiculturalism), which required a tremendous amount of preparation. St. Juste and her co-heads Ariana Gomes ’17 and Gia Guzman ’17 researched and prepared a theme — each focused on a distinct injustice — for PRISM to study and talk about each month. The committee met once a week to talk about these issues and also to plan committee and all-school events.

Still, St. Juste valued her time spent mentoring Middle School girls in the library, above all. “It was important for me that Middle Schoolers have someone they can look up to. It was important to me to form strong relationships with them, because I want them to move forward and do just that when they are seniors.”

St. Juste graduated in June and is currently a freshman at Williams College. Her gift to NCDS was a lasting legacy of leadership which has inspired both those impressionable Middle Schoolers and the entire Newton community. u

Women in Leadership: Alumnae Leaders Mariana Carrera ’00

A phenomenon called “the leaky pipeline” is often used to describe the shrinking percentage of females on the track from post-graduate school to full professorship in historically male-dominated fields of academia. One such field is Economics, but Mariana Carrera ’00 is successfully navigating that pipeline and is currently an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Carerra earned her Bachelor of Science in Economics and Political Science, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University in 2004, and received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 2011.

Carrera credits mentorship with her ability to lead. “Women are underrepresented in the economics profession in general,” said Carrera. “In my particular department at Case Western, however, I have the benefit of female mentors with full pro-

fessorships. Their guidance is invaluable to me and reminiscent of the mentorship I received at Newton Country Day School.”

Mentorship is an important theme in Carrera’s life and career. “One of my most memorable mentors at NCDS was Science Department Chair Dr. Coretta Tam, my chemistry teacher. She went out of her way to get us involved in competition outside of NCDS,” Carrera recalled. “Proficiency in competition is necessary in any profession. Studies show that males are more competitive from a young age, but women can be just as competitive, especially with effective mentorship.” Carrera remembers the feeling of empowerment that Dr. Tam’s mentorship gave her, “One year, Dr. Tam had us compete in the National Science Bowl (Northeast Regional Competition) in Boston, and we were the only all-girls team in the entire competition. The feeling of being the only group of girls to compete really fed our confidence.”

“Mariana was in my first class of students at NCDS,” said Dr. Tam. “She possessed a strong desire for knowledge and discovery.

During class discussions, it was clear that Mariana was always thinking deeply and analytically about the subject matter.

Her thoughts usually went one step ahead of the discussion, which helped introduce the next concept.”

At Duke, Carrera realized that if she could find a program that would emulate the mentorship she experienced at NCDS, she would be better equipped to pursue her ambitions. Between her senior year in college and her first year of graduate work at Berkeley, the American Economic Association (AEA) ran a summer training program at Duke, and Carrera quickly enrolled.

“Through this program I was able to do graduate level work and research before actually beginning graduate school.

The guidance and mentorship I received at this stage in my studies was invaluable, because it provided me with greater focus and a deeper foundation in the material, both of which helped me hit the ground running at Berkeley.”

The AEA’s program was so influential to Carrera that she returned to the program in later years as a teacher’s assistant. “Turning around and contributing to this amazing program, after having benefitted from it, was something I did largely because of my experience at NCDS, where we are always expected to give back.”

Now at Case Western Reserve, Carrera’s research focus is on health and behavioral economics. She also advises undergraduates on their studies and career paths and hires and mentors research assistants. And Carrera has some advice for NCDS students, too.

that are harder to access after or outside of school – programming, writing, math – things that give you concrete skills. Take advantage of internships and programs that are directed toward women – there are more of them out there than you might think,” Carrera added. “Writing skills are extremely important! Thanks to NCDS, I was already among the better writers in college, but I cannot stress how important this is.”

Along with her writing skills, Carrera still draws inspiration from two of Newton’s core values. “The motto of courage and confidence is very applicable to my work. For example, when writing a journal article, I am inclined toward perfection – to continue working with no end in sight. I have to remind myself to take the plunge and have the confidence to press ‘submit;’ to have the courage to present my work on a given topic for the first time.”

No doubt courage and confidence also come in handy when balancing work with a busy family life. Carrera and husband Justin Gallagher have a three-year-old daughter, Lexie, and a seven-monthold son, Alexander. But Carrera seems to have it all under control.

“Multi-talented and self-driven,” said Dr. Tam about her former student, and it seems as though those words still apply.

Lindsay McKenna ’02

Lindsay McKenna ’02 Anyone who meets Lindsay McKenna ’02 knows right away that she is a fast talker. A few minutes into the conversation, one will also realize that Lindsay is a “fast do-er.” She always has been.

McKenna graduated from Newton Country Day in 2002 and then attended Columbia University, where she studied chemical and biomedical engineering.

Upon graduation, she moved on to the University of Pennsylvania, where she completed a six-year molecular pharmacology PhD program in only four and a half years. McKenna was immediately hired by the consulting firm McKinsey and Co. in Manhattan, where today she is one of the company’s youngest partners.

It would appear that McKenna has followed her own advice when it comes to pursuing career am-

bitions. “What I say to the young women I mentor is find your passion and GO! Go with it,” she said.

“Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back. In my industry, it’s all about discovery, and discovery comes with forward movement.”

To her current role at McKinsey, McKenna brings the unique perspective of a research scientist (having spent the better part of a decade in academic laboratories), blended with her business acumen. McKenna spends half of her time advising pharmacology companies about the drugs they are creating and the other half with members of the healthcare value chain, such as insurance companies and hospitals. “The lens through which I look at everything is value,” McKenna explained. “I am constantly examining where the true value is in a certain situation or product, and I believe that in order to create something with value, you have to be

a person of values. That truly sets apart the winners from the losers in the business world.”

McKenna’s familiarity with the concept of values as a nucleus began with her experience at NCDS. “NCDS and my family were my first values-driven communities. NCDS taught me fundamental lessons about what matters – being service-oriented and integrity-driven.

“I was constantly supported by faculty who believed in me tremendously, while also pushing me to the height of my abilities. It is so hard to find a community where you feel both,” continued McKenna, reflecting on her eight years at NCDS. She recalled teachers like Mrs. Coates staying after school to work on science fair projects or even just to “discuss a journal article I had found and was excited about.” McKenna remembered faculty always going the extra mile – sometimes literally. “One year I did a project on the effects of oil spills, and I had to collect samples from beaches. I didn’t have my driver’s license, so my teachers would drive me around to beaches so I could run out there and get my specimens!”

As a woman in the STEM industry, McKenna admitted she was unaware of her minority status for much of her education and career. “To be honest, it was never a thing for me, precisely because of the courage and confidence I felt at NCDS and the female role models in my life, including so many of my teachers and of course my mom. Now that I have some experience behind me, I am more aware that I represent a minority of folks in STEM, but it never really came into play for me. In my 300-person co-ed freshman chemistry class at Columbia, I did exactly what I had done at NCDS for 8 years – I sat in the front row and asked a lot of questions.

“Thanks to my experience at NCDS, I have subconsciously sought out communities that are woman-strong, like McKinsey, a group I am so blessed to be a part of because it is so committed to women.”

McKenna understands the value of good role models and demonstrates that understanding with her participation in a myriad of pro bono STEM work. One of her favorite activities is mentoring the Girl Scouts of Greater New York, on whose Board she sits. “We are focused on developing the next generation of women in leadership.”

cisco, Calif. where she is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MOMA). Northrop has a knack for taking established brands and organizations and breathing new life into them so that they can be rediscovered for some and found for the first time by others.

“My experience at NCDS was tremendous and has certainly played a big role in my professional life. Being in a single-sex environment, and in small classes, was really empowering for me,” Northrop continued. “The faculty had a huge impact on my development. They were so dedicated, and they connected so meaningfully to students. I remember John Reine very well – he was incredible and really fueled my love of literature.”

Something else that proved to play an important role in Northrop’s career was her Senior Project.

“I really connected with my Senior Project site at the Institute of Contemporary Art which, at the time, was located on Newbury Street. I worked in

public relations and loved being involved in meaningful projects.”

After Newton, Northrop earned her B.A. in English from Providence College. During her junior year, she traveled to England to study at Oxford.

Enchanted by life abroad, Northrop returned to London after graduation and earned her master’s degree in English at the University of London. Enabled by her European Community Passport to live and work in the European Union, Northrop stayed in London for four years to work for Ralph Lauren Home Collection, a brand she would ultimately re-launch, before heading home to the United States.

Northrop continued working for Ralph Lauren once she moved to New York City and was responsible for international licensees and brands. She worked closely with Asian licensees and also traveled to Spain, Germany, France, and Belgium. “I had accounts all over Europe and traveled everywhere.

It was a fascinating growth experience,” reflected Northrop. “The idea of having a global perspective was instilled in me while I was at NCDS, and it became what I craved – adventure, travel, and getting to know different cultures. This was due in part to the school’s association with the International Network of Sacred Heart Schools. I didn’t want to do the expected thing, I wanted a challenge” In 2001, Northrop had an opportunity to make a career shift and started working on branding at Cooper Hewitt, the Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City.

Her branding work developed into PR, and as she did with the Ralph Lauren Home Collection’s re-launch, Northrop ultimately saw Cooper Hewitt through a

huge renovation and re-opening that she completed in 2014.

“I had an incredible experience working with curators and promoting the work of the museum. I came to love the cycle of museum life – content is constantly changing, and therefore I am constantly learning.” As it happens, Northrop’s office in the Cooper Hewitt Museum – housed in Andrew Carnegie’s retirement house on the Upper East Side of New York City – was right off of Carnegie’s library and had an old narrow elevator that reminded her of the original elevator in the main hallway of Newton’s Towle Estate. “Added to the fact that Convent of the Sacred Heart was a block away on 91st Street, I felt like I was home.”

SF MOMA called Northtrop in 2014, and her first thought was that it was a much larger organization than where she had worked in the past. SF MOMA was on the brink of stepping onto an even bigger modern art museum stage, in the company of the Tate Modern, MOMA NY, and Centre Pompidou in Paris. During her hardhat tour of SF MOMA’s new building, Northrop fell in love with the Scandinavian-inspired, American-Norwegian firm-created architecture. “It was open, bright, welcoming of natural light. I loved it.”

Because she also loves a challenge, Northrop was game for executing SF MOMA’s mission of doubling visitation. “This meant going out and talking to a new non-art audience. It was exciting and challenging. I started that initiative a year before we re-opened, and it was really exciting to re-launch a museum again.”

By May 2017, MOMA’s visitation had doubled from when Northrop took the reins of Marketing and PR. She currently oversees 85 people and is responsible for all aspects of branding and communication. On any given day, she could be giving a talk at Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco (pictured), or leading an in-house discussion about promoting a new exhibit. As Northrop continues to promote MOMA’s mission and offerings, she also balances her family life with husband Andrew and their “joys,” 13-year-old twins Calder and Theo.

When asked about her experience as a woman in a management position, Northrop pointed out that “a lot of women work for cultural organizations, but

as a gender, women are underrepresented in senior positions even within these organizations. I am also always fascinated to see how many times a woman will be speaking in a meeting and a man will interrupt or start speaking over her. I always try to balance that when I see it happening. It is very important for women to get comfortable with being heard.”

Among her mentors, Northrop includes the late Evelyn Lieberman, the first female White House Deputy Chief of Staff (under President Clinton). “Evelyn was the head of Communications and External Relations at the Smithsonian when I was with Cooper Hewitt. She was an exceptional mentor. She challenged and encouraged me to pursue the opportunity at MOMA.” Another mentor is Northrop’s mother, Judith O’Rourke Campbell. “Growing up, my mother always worked outside of the home, which was not the norm among my peers. Because of her, as well, it never really occurred to me to not work.”

Northrop’s direct boss at SF MOMA is Nan Keeton, the Deputy Museum Director for External Affairs. Northrop described her as a “big reason I took this job. I learn so much from her as a woman in this world of leadership and management. She has a great sense of humor and is incredibly inspirational.”

While Northrop has learned much in her career, one of the lessons she considers the most valuable is embracing what she doesn’t yet know. Northrop’s favorite interview question is to ask “How do you deal with ambiguity?”

“I consistently see younger people who are really challenged by ambiguity. They want to know this is the plan, or that is the answer, when the key is really being able to pivot from an unexpected occurrence or challenge. Give yourself room to try and to fail.”

“Women are not as comfortable with failure as men are, but we must see it as a learning experience,” Northrop added. “Proficiency in dealing with ambiguity is one of the most important things that anyone entering the workforce can bring.”

Perhaps it is no coincidence that a woman with such deep ties to the artistic world – a world which itself embraces ambiguity – would impart such advice on future generations. u

Reunion 2017 This year’s reunion, held on May 6th, had a robust turnout with over 160 alumnae returning to campus from 14 states, as well as Germany and El Salvador. As alumnae arrived, they toured the school, especially the Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center, before making their way to the Chapel for the Mass led by Father Richard Clifford, SJ. Following the Chapel Service, Sister Rogers welcomed alumnae before they made their way to the Blue Room, where they reconnected with friends and classmates and viewed photos of their time while on campus.

As the festivities continued during dinner, several classes pulled tables together as they reminisced and shared memories. The evening concluded as the Classes of 1987 and 2012 were applauded for having the highest percentage of attendees at Reunion.

October 2017 Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends, On behalf of Sister Rogers and my fellow Trustees, thank you for your commitment to Newton Country Day School and for entrusting your daughters to us. As the father of four alumnae and as the recently appointed Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am thrilled to help ensure that the School continues to provide exceptional opportunities for our girls to learn and become leaders in the world.

Passing of the Torch Christopher J. Kelly, father of Erin ’05, Megan ’07, Catherine ’12, and Clare ’16 and a member of the Board of Trustees since 2006, was elected Chair of the Board. Mr. Kelly is a Founding Partner and Principal of Insight Partners. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Newton Wellesley Hospital and is on the Advisory Board of Needham Bank.

He succeeds J. Terrence Carleton, father of Megan ’99. Mr. Carleton oversaw the successful completion of the Library and Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center. He is a Senior Vice President for Wealth Management and Private Wealth Advisor for UBS Financial Services.

He also served as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Bentley University.

I reflect on the tremendous work that has happened at Newton under Terry Carleton’s leadership as Chair. With his guidance over many years, our foundation has been strengthened considerably. Terry oversaw multiple successful capital projects, including the Library and the Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center. Many years ago, under his direction, our Annual Fund exceeded the $1 million mark for the first time. We thank Terry for his service and dedication to the School.

My hope is to build off the remarkable work of Terry, Sister Rogers, the faculty, staff, and our entire School community to carry on the legacy of instilling courage and confidence in our girls.

As we look to the future, we will continue to expose our girls to rich experiences through the Sacred Heart Network; more proactively engage and work with our alumnae; and ensure longterm sustainability by growing the School’s endowment. None of this will be possible without the investment of our community.

At Newton we are grateful to have parents, alumnae, and friends who are devoted to providing the best for our girls. This year, our community raised over $1.8 million in gifts to support tuition assistance, faculty enrichment, and vital programs to enhance student life; our volunteers worked countless hours. With the leadership of the Parents’ Association and our dedicated Auction Committee, the Très Bien Auction had its most successful year, raising nearly half a million dollars. Year after year, the giving participation of our alumnae increases. Your philanthropic generosity and dedication of time are evidence of your deep love for the School.

Everything we do here is about our girls. I am thankful for your support that enables our School to look to the future with a clear vision so that we can provide outstanding opportunities for our promising young women. Virginia Schumann, RSCJ A Religious of the Sacred Heart for 77 years, Sister Virginia Schumann, known as Ginny, was born on December 8, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY, the fourth of five children of Mary A.Griffin and Carl J. Schumann. Sister Schumann attended Kenwood Convent, a boarding school in Albany, and Manhattanville College in New York City, graduating with a BA in math. She entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood in 1937 and made her first vows there in 1940. Sister Schumann held teaching and administrative positions at a number of schools, including Sacred Heart Network Schools, before coming to Newton Country Day in 1972. Sr. Schumann remained at NCDS for 16 years, teaching math and inspiring students who even today delight in their memories of her.

“A long, long time ago I had a math class with Sister Schumann,” recalled Susie Hays ’77. “I cannot remember exactly what math class I had with Sister Schumann, but I do remember that I often got in trouble for misbehaving in class. Sister Schumann recognized that my problem was not related to bad

In those days math came easily to me.

So instead of punishing me or kicking me out of class, she had me work with some of my classmates who were not as quick as I was with math concepts. Sister Schumann was a tough teacher but a fair (and wily) one, as evidenced by her remedy for my shenanigans.”

“Sister Schumann was a very good teacher, fair and tough,” said Glenna Bourgeois Gelineau ’77. “I always liked her class. I remember we had a quiz every Friday, and she always made sure to praise you for doing well. It was just a quiz, but when she praised you, you felt like you passed the Bar Exam! She was a good motivator.”

On Sister Schumann’s 100th birthday, Newton’s singing group Schola Cantorum traveled to Albany, NY to perform for her. She later wrote to the NCDS community saying, “It was a surprise to be remembered with love by so many people. I am so grateful to the many who remind[ed] me of the influence I had on my students and what it was in me that touched them. I am so grateful to God for giving me 100 years.” u

Dear Alumnae, Ten years ago I graduated from Newton Country Day School, and the impact the school has had on my life is undeniable.

Last spring, when the opportunity arose to become Newton’s Director of Alumnae Relations, I was thrilled at the chance to develop and strengthen the alumnae network.

During our years at Newton, we are instilled with the constant reminder to become women of “courage and confidence,” acquired in so many ways during our Sacred Heart education.

Our alumnae use this courage and confidence to achieve great things — in college, at their jobs, and in their family lives.

I hope you enjoy reading about the alumnae and students profiled in this issue of Très Bien. There is one common thread through all their stories, which is the way that Newton Country Day and its mission have inspired these members of our community. Our alumnae network is full of so many more leaders and role models, and I hope that you will share your

living community with about 12 Sisters inserted among professors, engineers, etc. of all faiths. She also cares for a Sister at a skilled nursing facility and delights in her grandnieces. One is an Olympic hopeful on the ski slopes and the other is an activist in the elephant community. Her sister Brenda Sullivan Geishecker ’58 lives around the corner from me so I keep in touch. Bea Sullivan McDevitt is well and lives in Greenland, N.H., a very short hop to her beloved Rye Beach. Her children are well and close.

Betty Curtin Crowley, our energizer bunny, moved to a condo and loves it. It is much easier to care for. She looks forward to her grandson’s wedding at the Grand Canyon.

Her granddaughter is turning 19. Brenda Sullivan Downey’s husband Fran passed away on February 19. Fran entertained his 14 grandchildren, who loved him deeply.

She also lost a niece in March. She is still in Portland, ME, and luckily her seven children live in the Portland area. Brenda would love to see anyone who visits Portland. Catharine-Mary Donovan only spent Grades 1-5 at Newton Country Day along with Mary Alice (Missy) Reilly Cavanaugh, now deceased, who left in the First Academic for Milton Academy. Both were and are loyal alumnae. Catharine-Mary graduated from Winsor and Manhattanville with graduate work at Bryn Mawr and Simmons.

She worked at the Harvard Business Review for 48 years and now does secretarial work at Our Lady of Victories Church. Margaret (Peggy) Knapp Galvin moved from Florida to Long Beach, Calif. to North Carolina with her cat, a very important family member, and her daughter Kathy. Peggy also has son Matt, daughter Caroline, and son Billy, who she believes has had a miraculous recovery from his ongoing battle with cancer.

She sounds wonderful! Adelaide (Addie) O’Keefe McMurrer lives in Hamilton, Mont. Her daughter Elizabeth is there, too.

She was a tour guide for The Daly Mansion in Hamilton but retired. As we know she was and is a passionate knitter. Her shop was in Osterville, Mass. It was fun to catch up. Anne (Margot) Roy Nasjleti lives in Holyoke, Mass. in an over 55 complex once owned by the Sisters of Providence. Her husband David is turning 90 and both are FA L L 2 0 17

in very good health. Their son Mark, whom we met at our 50th reunion, is heading to Colombia to visit the family of the people he lives with in Northampton. Mass. They have four other children: a son in Chicago, another in Deerfield, Mass., a daughter in Colorado and a daughter in Virginia. Anne loves to paint and also belongs to a writing group of five women who each choose an area of interest to write about (history, poetry, etc.). It was fun to talk to her. She is a happy lady. Shirley Thurmond Stanley moved from her family home and is adjusting to apartment living. Although still in Green Bay, Wis. with most of her children near, she seems to miss the house. She still does work for her church but always has time for her seven children, 11 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. One daughter lives in Salem, Mass. so she hopes to travel east soon. Mary Sullivan lives in Falmouth, Mass. Her husband Paul passed away a couple of years ago, but dear Mary enjoys life with her children and 31 grandchildren! Your scribe (Penny) is well. I am still in the family hut in Needham, Mass., keeping active with golf, bridge, etc. I lost a beloved sister last year, Margaret (Peggy) Kickham Grady ’57, but still have two brothers and their spouses and good friends, whom I cherish. My children and grandchildren are all in my life and are a source of great joy. I also work two days a week at St. Sebastian’s School and love it. The faculty and students keep me young.

Class of 1958 Class Reporter Betsy Gannon betsygannon@netzero.net Margaret Driscoll Callen lost her dear husband Merrill on December 23, 2016 after 52 wonderful years together and a short battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. Jeanne Woods is very sick but still somehow is able to retain her unique humor! She asks for your prayers. She was unaware of how ill she was last November and ended up hospitalized and is now on oxygen 24 hours a day. We had a great talk about her trips to Ireland and how in Callingford she asked a lad in a gaggle of schoolboys “Are there any Woods around here?” He said “They’re all Woods! You won’t go far without bumping into them.” He was a cousin! Her interests led her to create a large library of Irish poetry, literature, history, and maps. Carolyn (Carey) Hayes Slocum has also retained her humor. Wonderful to talk with her after 12 years! All three of her children moved from England to the United States, the eldest two nearby in Scottsdale, Ariz. Her grandchildren (now in their 30s) always love to come over to Granbo for holidays. Carey will be at our 60th Reunion next May and got a commitment from me (Betsy Gannon). Eleanor Donovan Driscoll writes, “Went to southern Italy for three weeks in May. Miss all.” Suzanne (Sue) Full McCann writes, “I swim 2-3 times a week, play bridge once a week, and enjoy my book club once a month. I also enjoy volunteering at the Westboro Food Pantry. Since fifth grade studies the United States, I have taken her to 19 states, from climbing on the Wright Brothers airplane in Kitty Hawk, N.C., to putting our feet in the Mississippi River in Iowa in March (it was COLD)! She climbed a tree on the top of Loft Mountain in Shenandoah National Park in Va., and then two days later dove off our sailboat to go snorkeling in Chesapeake Bay. We have been to Concord to see the monument of ‘the shot heard round the world,’ then taken a sailboat up the

York River in Yorktown, Va. where she shook hands with the statues of George Washington and DeGrasse. No wonder the British lost, look how narrow the river is!”

Activities include general landscaping, installation of in-ground pool, a Mediterranean cruise with cousin June O’Connell Wallace ’69, and a trip to Brazil. Next steps include trip to Egypt and cruise to Bermuda with my son, Nathaniel, my daughter-in-law Ryann, and Hudson. In 2008 she completed her MBA at Yale and left nurse-midwifery for healthcare strategy consulting, which she did for two years. From 2010-2016 she worked at Yale New Haven Health System, where she led the population health strategy and operations for the system in her final three years. In August 2016 she took another leap and joined Optum in the Boston office, where she was vice president and general manager for their managed analytics business. Amanda is excited to announce that she has now been named the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. She lives in West Hartford, Conn. with her awesome husband Kalter (a teacher), who lovingly tolerates her frequent career changes, and their cute little dog-buddy Baxter.

Wendy Brown and her husband, Michael Giarratano, welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Ruby Marie Giarratano, on August 27, 2016. In January, Wendy returned to her position as a reading specialist at Ottoson Middle School in Arlington, Mass. Angharad (Annie) Coates writes, “After graduating from Columbia, I moved overseas for three years – first to Morocco to work with an anti-illiteracy charity in the city Sale, which was extraordinary and life-changing. I picked up enough Arabic to get around and traveled the whole country. My mother, Mary-Louise Coates, who teaches in the science department at NCDS, came to visit. I then took a position as a curricular assistant with the Ministere de l’Education in France for two years. I was based in Haute-Normandie, about 40 minutes outside of Paris. I spent a lot of time exploring Paris, Brittany, the Loire, and the South and welcoming visits from friends and my sisters Elaine Coates ’03 and Alison Coates ’01. I moved back to New York after three years away and began working in fashion – I landed a job as an assistant to fashion designer Ralph Rucci, who showed at both Paris and New York Fashion Weeks. (My French came in handy)! A wild, stressful, crazy-fun experience, and it started me on my career in fashion and art PR. After training at Rucci, I joined a photography gallery with branches in New York and St. Barth, doing art book launches and gallery openings, then worked at two different PR agencies. I’ve done over 40 fashion shows and some incredible projects – I was part of the creative team for Jay-Z’s ‘Picasso Baby’ music video at a gallery in Chelsea; I put together a gala in Los Angeles for Marina Abramovic; I was shuttling back and forth between the United States and Italy for a year while working at a PR firm headquartered in Milan. (I completely failed to learn Italian.) I’m now the Director of Communications for the New York

Academy of Art, a cultural institution in Tribeca, and live on the Upper East Side.

In the past four years, I’ve done some fabulous trips to India, Greece and Italy. I still come to Boston frequently to visit my mother and stop in at NCDS, and I recently became an aunt!” Duffy Markham Danish lives in Alexandria, Va. with husband Michael, son Edward (born November 2015), and dogs Quinn and Margarita. Melissa de Oliveira Smith is Edward’s godmother! Duffy is a sales rep for CK Sales group, representing bicycle industry brands Shimano, Pearlizumi, Gu, Lazer Helmets, and Light & Motion lights. She also owns a women’s cycling team, Pink Siren Sports, which is nationwide with over 100 members. In her spare time she and the family take fun mountain bike vacations in their airstream camper. Meta Ann Cushing Ela and her family live in bucolic Ridgefield, Conn. She is currently on maternity leave taking care of her daughter Eleanor. Norie celebrated her first birthday in January. Days are spent singing songs and enjoying life. Lauren Phelan Lipscomb continues to work in commercial real estate with CBRE and focus on her three kids: Pete (7), Maisy (5), and Riley (3). Murphy is a vice president of Loomis, Sayles & Company in Boston, and co-portfolio manager of the Loomis Sayles Inflation Protected Securities and Multi-Asset Income funds. My finishing time was 3:40:19. Class of 2016 At Union College’s 222nd Founder’s Day Celebration, Religion Department Chair Dr. Mark Potter was presented with the Gideon Hawley Teacher Recognition Award. Named for the 1809 graduate of Union who was New York’s first superintendent of public education, the award is given to secondary school teachers who have had a continuing influence on the academic life of Union students. Potter was nominated by Katharine (Kat) Beal, who is a biology major at Union. “I’ve never felt more proud of being an NCDS alum and a Union College student,” said Kat. “It was awesome seeing how the two schools complement each other so well.” Grace Cogan raced in the first boat for Holy Cross.
