April 26, 2016 marked the dedication of the Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center. In the midst of pouring rain, Cardinal O’Malley made his first visit to the School. Greeted with song by the Schola Cantorum in the Chapel, the Cardinal joined the procession of girls and faculty into the Martin Center. During the prayer service our building was blessed and earnest prayers were offered that we strive to build our lives on the firm foundation that is Christ.

The building is the culmination of a dream first discussed in the 1980s. So many alumnae, parents, trustees, and friends made the Martin Center a reality! We are deeply blessed by such marvelous generosity.

Kay Martin joined our Board of Trustees in the 80s. She and her husband Jerry sent all three of their daughters to the School: Michelle ’85; Marilyn ’86, P’11’21; and Marianne ’92, P’20’24.

Kay was a lively participant in years of Auctions, always developing leadership for the next annual event.

Kay loved the Religious of the Sacred Heart, and was a dear friend to Sisters Elizabeth Sweeney, Alice Husson, and Catherine Baxter. She was central to the growth of the School. Her sound judgment and good advice grew from listening closely as she cast a keen eye, sizing up situations and people.

A private woman, she rarely spoke about herself. Her gaze was outward; she focused on the person or need in front of her.

Her loyalty to the people and institution she loved was unmatched. Kay Martin was smart, strong, wise, and generous. How fabulous that generations of Sacred Heart girls will benefit from the Kathleen R. Martin Center.

Kay’s gracious smile welcomes all to the newest facility on the School campus.

The beloved wife of Gerard “Jerry” Martin and the loving mother of Michelle Martin ’85, Marilyn Martin Parker ’86, and Marianne Martin Burke ’92, Kay delighted in her nine grandchildren including Mackenzie ’11 and Sidney Parker ’21, and Lauren ’20 and Paige Burke ’24.

KAY WAS A BUSINESS WOMAN, philanthropist, and volunteer. She joined the Board of Trustees in 1989 and was named Trustee Emeritus in 2004. She and Jerry chaired the school’s eighth annual Auction in 1982. “Kay was the driving force behind the success of the annual auctions for many years. She and Jerry were the 25th annual Auction’s special honorees in 1999,” reflects Sister Rogers. “Kay always looked at the person in front of her, the need that presented itself. She and Jerry understood and exemplified the Gospel call to extraordinary service and generosity.”

Kay’s daughters tell that “Mom sought a Catholic-based education in an all-girls’ school for us. She chose Newton Country Day for its strong spiritual formation and its motto of ‘Courage and Confidence.’

She was a great champion of Sister Baxter and Sister Rogers and thrived on the growth and progress of the School throughout her years as a parent, a member of the Board of Trustees, and later a grandparent.

“An exceptionally caring person, Mom was the consummate hostess. One of eight children, she was the heart and the hub of our family and welcomed all our friends and extended family into her circle. A very private person, she gave of herself without the need for recognition. Her involvement in the world of healthcare was extensive and her loyalty to the people and institutions she loved was unmatched.”

gathered in the Reardon Family Gymnasium for the Martin Center Dedication and Blessing ceremony, Sister Rogers recalls Kay “as dedicated, kind, and generous. She had a great vision and looked to see how she could make Newton Country Day School better, not just for her daughters but for Sacred Heart girls who would come for generations. She was about creating an atmosphere of deep love and care. Kay would want you to know that this Martin Center is for you, to make you aware of how deeply God loves you, a love that propels you to turn to others.

“This building is created in the spirit of wisdom and generosity that started more than 200 years ago with the founders of the Society of the Sacred Heart and continues with people like Kathleen R. Martin,” says Sister Rogers. “How grateful we are for her life and to the Martin family.” NCDS

THE NEWTON COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL MARTIN CENTER, dedicated to Kathleen R. Martin, was blessed by Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, OFM Cap., Archbishop of Boston, on April 26.

The prelude for the Cardinal’s first visit to the School was held in the Chapel where Schola Cantorum sang Ubi Caritas and Alleluia and Sister Rogers explained the history of the Chapel and the stained glass windows. Many of Cardinal O’Malley’s family are graduates of Sacred Heart schools.

Student Government President Cecilia Barreto ’16 opened the Dedication and Blessing Ceremony in the new Reardon Family Gymnasium welcoming the Cardinal, priests, Newton city officials, trustees, three generations of the Martin family including Kay’s husband of 60 years Jerry Martin, and guests to the Martin Center. In his homily, Cardinal O’Malley addressed the Gospel of Matthew (7:24-29) where Jesus speaks of “a wise man who built his house on a rock.”

“It is a great joy to be here on such a happy occasion as we dedicate this new Martin Center,” said the Cardinal. “The Gospel tells us that Jesus came to form disciples in a community. We are called to be a community that draws people closer to the Lord, a community built on the rock of faith. God’s work, nurtured by the sacraments, is the community that realizes our connectedness.

“Catholic education is to nurture faith and prayer in a sense of mission to perform works of mercy and to live social Gospel of the Church that recognizes the precious gift of every human being and proclaims our connectedness to God and to one another. Catholic education is to help us discover how much God loves us and to discover who we are, why we are here, and what we have to do with our lives.

“Today we celebrate the mission of the Religious of the Sacred Heart that sponsors the ministry of this extraordinary Catholic school where young women are invited to the arduous task of discipleship with the mission to make this planet a better place for all and to give Glory to God, our Creator and our Savior.”

Sister Rogers spoke of Kathleen R. Martin.

“Many people made this building a reality, but the person for whom this facility is named is a particularly marvelous example of what we hope for our girls. The Martin Center is the embodiment of generosity, of people who want all that is the best for our girls. We thank St. Madeleine Sophie, St. Philippine Duchesne, Kay Martin, and the Martin family. Today is a glorious day.”

His Eminence closed the Blessing Ceremony with a prayer and the sprinkling of water over the congregation and the building. The Martin Center Dedication events included receptions for trustees and donors and an open house with tours of the Reardon Family Gymnasium, squash courts, erg and fitness rooms, Duffy Phelan Room, athletic training room, the dance and yoga studio, and the wellness classroom. Wellness & the Middle School Girl Ms. Abigail Hueber ’05 graduated from Gettysburg College and earned her license as a Registered Dietitian from Simmons College. A certified yoga instructor, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Nutrition Education and Disordered Eating at Northeastern University OUR WELLNESS CURRICULUM is exciting, engaging,

and aligned with the most current theories and practices of wellness and the middle school girl. Now in its fifth year, this initiative offers explicit lessons on ways in which nutrition, mindfulness, and exercise impact and inform how we care for our bodies and develop a healthy lifestyle.

While at Newton Country Day as a student, I played varsity field hockey under the guidance of Mrs. Southall, and I co-chaired the Peer Education Committee. Now as a member of the faculty, I have returned to the field as a lacrosse coach and am a faculty advisor for Peer Education, addressing topics around wellness, drug-awareness, and social-emotional management with Upper and Middle School girls. As an alumna, I am committed to promoting the health and wellness of the school community.

To that end, I developed a comprehensive wellness program for grades five through eight.

Foundations of Nutrition Fifth grade focuses on the foundations of nutrition as it pertains to food, aiming to present information in a format that directly relates to the students’ lives.

Girls learn basic tools to foster healthful choices.

Classroom activities include the use of the “Balanced Plate Model” as an interactive art project in which fruits, vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats are discussed in terms of what they are and their health benefits. It is a hands-on food experience. The girls learn how to read nutrition labels utilizing a “Traffic Light System” to rate the nutritional quality of packaged foods. They become familiar with current trends in nutrition such as farmers markets, seasonal foods, key nutrition terms, and farm-to-table trends.

Movement for Health Sixth grade builds the connection between exercise, nutrition, and health for life-long wellness.

Girls explore how exercise works to benefit the health of our body, focusing on the role of individual systems and organs such as skeletal, muscular, and cardiovascular systems; heart; brain; and lungs. They identify key nutrients that benefit each system and sample foods that are high sources of the highlighted nutrient. Students use their bodies to learn how to read their heart rate and to explore the differences and benefits of weight training and cardiovascular exercise.

Yoga and Mindfulness Long recognized as a tool to manage stress, yoga aims to provide an opportunity for seventh grade girls to explore quiet self-reflection in an environment that combines guidance, movement, and self-challenge. The program introduces the fundamentals of yoga for beginners, incorporating gentle breathing exercises and yoga postures.

As another form of personal expression, classes open with five minutes of meditation on a specific scripture reading or prayer. Each girl creates a written intention to encourage a positive focus

for herself. The combination of physical movement and time for quiet reflection helps the girls develop healthy states of mind and body.

“Full of Ourselves” The eighth grade course is partially based on a curriculum, “Full of Ourselves,” developed at Harvard Medical School by well-known clinician Catherine Steiner-Adair and accomplished curriculum designer Lisa Sjostrom. This program is designed to promote positive body awareness among middle school girls. Students discuss topics relating to body image, peer influence, self-empowerment, and the impact of media messages targeting a young female audience. Utilizing activities such as journal writing, eighth grade girls evaluate positive and negative messages in their environment and learn to respond in a mindful way. Emphasis is placed on developing greater self-awareness and confidence and a classroom culture of support in which girls feel comfortable to openly express their ideas.

Ninth grade girls experience new freedoms and responsibilities. Freshman Seminar, a yearlong program, is a collaborative effort taught by several faculty members. Topics address concerns of incoming freshmen, spirituality and the mission of Sacred Heart Schools, orientation to high school life, and health and wellness. Together, school nurse Ms. Christina Martinez and I teach the health and wellness components of this seminar.

Peer Education I am thrilled to again be a part of Peer Education.

The committee, comprised of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, is guided by a health and wellness team of faculty. The student-led group meets weekly to proactively address drunk-driving, suicide, anxiety, eating disorders, body image, and depression. The goal of this committee is to inform, educate, and provide resources for their peers.

Peer Education members also mentor seventh grade girls and organize a drug safety day with their peers at Belmont Hill School. Conversations are held in appropriate and approachable ways. The mutual excitement that evolves from the building of relationships between Middle and Upper School girls is profound.

The school community is excited about our new Martin Center. As a Wellness Educator, I am enthused about the dynamic opportunities the new space allows for nutrition projects, exercise, and yoga. I feel so blessed to be back at Newton Country Day as an integral part of the wellness curriculum. It is a vital component of a girl’s education. NCDS

“THE MARTIN CENTER is an important investment in the education and development of our girls,” says Athletic Director and varsity field hockey Coach Kimberly Kos Southall. Kim’s enthusiasm about the opportunities the new Martin Center will offer stems from her background as a nationally recognized athlete.

Kim was inducted into the Boston University Hall of Fame for field hockey in 2004. She posted the second-highest single-season assist total in Terrier history and ranks fourth in career point totals (89). In her junior year she was named First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Region, helping to advance the 17-5 Terriers to the NCAA Tournament. As senior co-captain, her season point total of 31 was ranked the eighth-best single-season total in BU’s history and was a force that positioned the Terriers 18th in national rankings. In addition, she holds team records for speed in fitness.

Now in her seventeenth year coaching varsity field hockey, Kim has tallied 11 winning seasons, six bids to the New England Tournament, four Eastern Independent League trophies, and six EIL Coach of the Year awards. Her recent seven years are impressive with an 87-34-14 overall record.

“Athletics has always been an important part of my life,” says Kim who played field hockey, basketball, and softball in high school. “Playing sports helped me grow as a person. I learned significant life lessons such as the importance of commitment, respect, the value of a strong work-ethic, the ability to be flexible, and the willingness to persevere.

“High school is an opportunity for the girls to take risks with their learning and explore the wide variety of choices and opportunities offered. Within the athletic and wellness program, there is a myriad of options not only for the serious athlete but also for the student who wants to be active but not at a competitive level,” she says.

“The athletic program has expanded significantly since I became the athletic director 12 years ago.

We kept pace with a growing enrollment by offering a wider variety of options and by taking into consid-

eration choices requested by the girls.

“The Martin Center will allow us to further enrich our program,” she says looking forward. “With squash moving back on campus we anticipate increased excitement and even greater participation.

Volleyball and basketball, though well-established here at Newton Country Day School, at times in the past needed to utilize alternative off-campus facilities for practice and games. With indoor options such as the fitness center, the erg room, and multipurpose rooms, space restrictions and weather interruptions can be resolved easily.

“I expect our afternoons will be even livelier with the Martin Center now on campus. A greater number of students will have access to sports and fitness and opportunities that create balance and enhance self-confidence. This facility is a critical addition to and investment in the girls’ lives here at school. It totally aligns itself with our school motto ‘Courage and Confidence.’

“I am impressed with and proud of our girls,” says Kim with admiration. “They come to the field, the river, the court, and the ice after a long day in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities. They come with a range of skills and a deep understanding of commitment and responsibility to a team. They want to learn, to compete, to win, and at the same time they want to laugh and to support and enjoy their friends. They leave Newton Country Day having had a very well-rounded, thoughtful, high school experience. It is what high school is all about, and it is why I love Newton Country Day. I am confident that our girls are well balanced and well prepared for the challenges beyond high school when they graduate.” NCDS

sociation selected Elizabeth Warner ’17 to the 2015 Harrow Sports Massachusetts Region Field Hockey Team, two alumnae were particularly delighted – Marjorie O’Neill Ferren ’52 and Susan Ferren Warner ’81.

Elizabeth’s grandmother and mother both wielded field hockey sticks for Newton Country Day. Marjorie played on the “hockey” team that in her senior year brought home the prized Elmhurst Cup. Although the game, the sticks, and the uniforms have changed, the generational spirit of purpose and tenacity remains steadfast.

“One day, years ago, I looked out my window to the Warner yard that had a hockey rink built for the boys,” recalls Marjorie. “There, in a pink snowsuit, a helmet, and ice skates was two-year old Elizabeth.

She was determined to skate the length of the rink by herself. She did it!”

Susan continues the story. “That drive has always been with her. As a little girl she played on boys’ hockey teams. Two days before she entered Newton Country Day as a seventh grader, I bought her a field hockey stick and told her she would love the sport. She came back saying the stick was great, but it would be nice to have a ball, too! Ice hockey helped Elizabeth develop a natural field hockey swing and an understanding that play continues to the final horn.”

“She is a competitor,” comments Athletic Director and Coach Kim Southall of the large role Elizabeth plays in her team’s success. “Her understanding of the game is strong. In practice and games she gives all she can to better herself and her teammates.

With her incredible stick skills and awareness of the field she distributes the ball better than anyone. A two-way player and an integral part of our corner offense and corner defense, Elizabeth loves to win and will do what it takes to see that happen.”

Only 145 field hockey players from across the country comprise the eleven NFHCA High School All-Region Teams to which Elizabeth, the 2015 EIL and team MVP, was selected.

Elizabeth’s story starts in fall 1946 when Marjorie O’Neill, a new seventh grader, joined the Newton Country Day field hockey team. Players dressed in blue tunics, white starched blouses, and full length, cotton lisle stockings. “I was a five-day boarder from Groton where my father, a lawyer, ran an apple orchard business with an international clientele. He asked around for the best school for girls. Numerous priests in the family directed him to Sacred Heart.

“Our classes were small with girls in kindergarten to senior year. I loved my years here and loved learning. The Religious were so smart,” says Marjorie who went on to work at Harvard Business School and earn a M.Ed. from Boston College.

“If you wanted to play a sport, you joined the team for practice before a game. We enjoyed spirited competition with a few Catholic high schools in the area, but the big game was against Elmhurst, the Sacred Heart School in Rhode Island. We traveled once a year to Providence to compete for the Elmhurst Cup. “I loved running, and I loved winning! The sticks were very different in my time. Today the sports are fast-paced, and the coaching is superb. But even in my era, to play and be a part of a team was wonderful. We learned an awareness of others, to accept people where they are, and never to give up.

And, as Pope Francis reminds us, to have humility.

These values apply to everything in life.”

Marjorie’s daughter Susan, a Boston College graduate who followed her grandfather’s footsteps into the law, entered Newton Country Day in 1979 as a junior. “I needed a school that inspired women with the motto ‘Courage and Confidence,’” she says.

“Having played field hockey, I joined the varsity team. A team is like a family; you have to work with

everyone and know each player’s strengths. Team sports instill patience, discipline, responsibility, and focus. To be in a game means to go beyond your fears, to reach down deep to want to win. And losing builds strength. Playing a sport broadens horizons and cultivates a lifestyle based on honesty, trust, and fairness; values that carry you for the rest of your life.”

Susan recalls watching Elizabeth’s games with Meg Fahy Galligan ’74, a 23-year field hockey coach at the College of the Holy Cross and mother of Elizabeth’s former teammate Cori ’14.

“Meg encouraged Elizabeth to further develop her skills by trying out for the Boston Field Hockey Club. Elizabeth’s academics are top priority. She has learned to balance her school and club field hockey teams, the NCDS hockey team, and maintain academic honors. When she starts to unravel she pulls herself back with ‘Courage and Confidence.’ The motto serves us well and helps us set goals and expectations.

“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is in giving a little bit more,” adds Susan, “whether it is a few more free throws, an extra ten minutes reviewing notes before a test, or a little more caring and thoughtfulness toward another.

Much is expected of today’s student athlete and artist including giving back to the school community and serving the greater community.

Street were semi-feudal societies consisting of a few wealthy families and their coachmen, gardeners, cooks, and maids. With the advent of the 20th century, these spacious landscapes gradually became home to academic institutions.

On December 4, 2015 Newton Country Day celebrated 90 years on Centre Street. The transition to Newton from its previous Boston locations marked the third move in the School’s now 136-year history.

The Boston Academy of the Sacred Heart opened its doors at No. 5 Chester Square in the South End on April 5, 1880 to eight girls from six different Boston neighborhoods. With a growing enrollment and the 1901 construction of elevated train tracks that brought an influx of commercial businesses to the area, the School sought a new location.

A move to 264 and 266 Commonwealth Avenue in 1907 offered the School closer proximity to improved public transportation, open space for outdoor activities, and a rooftop playground and basketball court.

By 1920, the student body surpassed the hundred mark and a fourth contiguous townhouse was purchased. Even at this time, the School was examining the Boston suburbs for an ideal site for a weekly boarding and day school.

In July 1925 Kiley and Cassell Real Estate sent the Boston Academy a Meredith and Grew brochure of the Loren D. Towle Estate at 785 Centre Street, Newton. “This brochure describes a remarkable estate for sale. Something should be said of the unusual circumstances of its creation to which were brought a degree of knowledge, an attention to detail, and a loving care such as an artist devotes to his masterpiece.” The brochure included a blueprint of the buildings and property marked as “land to be traded for the four city townhouses.”

Real estate operator Loren D. Towle and his wife Helen purchased the Centre Street property in 1916 from Sarah Wingate Taylor. Her great uncle Oliver Shannon acquired the estate in 1840, possessed earlier by the Edmands, Cabot, and Sargent families.

Mr. Towle engaged the services of prominent Boston architect Arthur Bowditch, noted for his work with terra-cotta, to design a 35room, gothic style, English Revival mansion.

The focal point of the home is an artistically carved Indiana limestone porte cochere. Expansive terraces, a rose garden with limestone trefoil coping, a sunken garden, and grounds landscaped by renowned architects Messrs.

Olmsted Brothers surround the mansion. Mr. Towle died in 1924. His home was in its final stages of completion.

In August 1925, an agreement was drawn up between Mrs. Towle and the Boston Academy of the Sacred Heart. The Towle estate and the Boston Academy townhouses were of equivalent value.

The Boston Academy purchased the Towle estate on December 4, 1925. The Academy finished the school year at Commonwealth Avenue and moved to Centre Street on June 15, 1926, the Feast of the Sacred Heart. October 4, 1926 was opening

day for 73 girls arriving at the School’s new campus.

For the first time in the School’s then 45 years in Boston there was expansive outdoor space for field hockey, sledding, tennis, skating, and watching two sheep keep the grass cut in the Sunken Garden.

The original estate work was completed, and a four-story wing that included classrooms, a library, and a chapel was erected by Irish immigrant and architect Charles D. Maginnis, father of 1926 and 1933 graduates of the School. Renowned for his Gothic design and ecclesiastical architecture, Maginnis at the time also was designing Boston College and College of the Holy Cross campuses.

The School was named the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. Newton Country Day at that time was the name for the School for Boys of Boston founded in 1907 and located on Nonantum Hill. The 1938 Great New England Hurricane devastated the Nonantum Hill school. It shuttered its doors, and the property later became St. Sebastian Country Day School for boys.

When the Boston Academy of the Sacred Heart purchased the Towle estate it assumed the obligation to “Life Tenant” Mary Shannon Wingate. The Wingate home once graced the School’s upper athletic field. A passerby today might note a break in the 1812 Centre Street stonewall, with what appears to be a gated entrance. From 1798 to 1948, a brick and clapboard mansion designed by Charles Bulfinch sat just beyond the walled entrance. The 30-acre estate held a stable, a greenhouse, a three-story cottage, and box-bordered gardens laid in the style of Mount Vernon. The home was an intellectual center, particularly for causes of education, abolition, and women’s rights. Frequent visitors included Clara Barton, Booker T. Washington, Samuel Gridley Howe (Perkins Institute for the Blind), Julia Ward Howe (“Battle Hymn of the Republic”), the Durants (founders of Wellesley College), astronomer Maria Mitchell, artists, composers, and philanthropists. Today, the Shannon Wingate property provides Newton Country Day athletes a turf rich in the history of men and women of strong courage and conviction who walked that space decades ago.

These past 90 years on Centre Street have witnessed great expansion in facilities, enrollment, and programs. This year the School celebrated 90 years in Newton with the dedication of the Martin Center.

When the inaugural class of eight girls from six Boston neighborhoods laid the foundation for Sacred Heart education in an 1880 cityscape, how could they have imagined the expansive historic campus seven miles west that would be home to their legacy, a vibrant and diverse student body of 380 girls who arrive from 50 communities and many others who visit as international Sacred Heart exchange students. Historic Stained Glass Windows THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS in the Chapel were

featured in the Boston College spring exhibit “The Arts and Crafts Movement: Making It Irish.” Nancy Netzer, Director of the McMullen Museum of Art, describes the exhibit as the first comprehensive examination of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement as it was experienced in the context of cultural nationalism and major political transformation. As part of the exhibit, professors of art history, Milda Richardson at Northeastern University and Virginia Raguin at the College of the Holy Cross, lectured on the work of architect Charles Maginnis P1926’33 and the art of stained glass crafted by Irish studio artists.

The Chapel “The Chapel at Newton Country Day has a number of design elements we find throughout Maginnis’ churches: elaborate Gothic carvings, gracefully channeled moldings, wainscoting, an interior dark stenciled oak ceiling finished with arch-braced trussing and stems. The lines lead to the altar,” says Richardson. “The treatment of the altar is a favorite design of Maginnis for Gothic interiors. The ornaments that express the beauty of God’s house bring the surface to life. The Chapel is an architectural ornament of persuasion; it is sacred space. The Irish-born architect who began and ended each day on his knees in prayer left us a reverent architecture of reminiscence.”

“Within this sacred space of 15th-century English Gothic design are the exquisite windows from the Tower of Glass Studio in Dublin,” continues Raguin who believes the Religious at the time the Chapel was constructed had a “serious understand-

ing of quality art. These windows are a major work of art. They are of museum quality.”

An Túr Gloine The eight stained glass windows in the Chapel were created by six different artists between 1927 and 1928 in the former An Túr Gloine (Tower of Glass) workshop in Ireland.

In 1901 Edwin Martyn, co-founder of the Irish Literary (later Abbey) Theater, asked Christopher Whall, a pioneer in English Arts & Crafts movement, to establish a school in Dublin. Whall sent his chief assistant Alfred Ernest Child. In 1903, Child worked with painter Sarah Purser to establish An Túr Gloine, a cooperative stained glass studio. The cooperative executed many important commissions in Ireland and England. A number of commissions were made expressly for America. Newton Country Day houses one of the largest and most sophisticated: seven threelight windows and a rose installed by 1929. The artists include Michael Healy, Alfred Earnest Child, Catherine (Kitty) A. O’Brien, Kathleen Quigley, and Ethel Rhind. Each artist created his or her own window and signed it in the bottom corner of the right lancet.

Throughout the program we see the vigor of the Irish collective.

Artists kept their own approaches, supported by the encouragement of the collective.

Depicting seven female leaders of the Church, the windows in the Newton Country Day School Chapel constitute one of the most important ensembles of this internationally admired movement outside of Ireland.

Each window contains a standing figure in the central light that incorporates deeply saturated

colors. The framing lancets are lighter in value; most display several medallions pertaining to the life or the virtues embodied by the saint. The cool abstraction of essential shapes supports a remarkable clarity in the narrative as well as bringing considerable light into the interior. The application of the vitreous paint is visibly acute. Invariably the design is constructed with intense black contours that parallel the size of the lead cames (flexible links connecting segments of glass). Thus, the visual graphic of black against intense color becomes a unifying motif.

Thus, the viewer is invited to meditate on the immense suffering of a woman as her only son was tortured and killed before her eyes.

A glowing color harmony emerges from the background of this window with stimulating mixtures of azure blue, magenta, and scarlet red. Hubert McGoldrick, also the artist of the St. Margaret Mary window, uses this interplay of effervescent hues to unify the compo-

sition and engage the eye. Quilt-like patterns throughout the design similar to those from St. Margaret Mary add texture. Such detail is transfixing in its intricacy. In each medallion, angels offer a service to God, including music, prayers, and gifts of incense. The elongated figures of the angels fill the composition and are expressively active. Their drapery falls in abstracted linear patterns that inject motion through repeated flat lines that contour the body to express movement. The large, curved wings of the angels sweep around the images to frame them, creating natural and cohesive intersections between the medallions.

A Religion Program that stands apart The religion program at Newton Country Day is distinctive. We are about making known the love of the heart of Jesus Christ. St. Madeleine Sophie Barat made that the cornerstone of our curriculum and of Sacred Heart education. To that end, rather than follow a textbook, Middle and Upper School teachers spend endless hours coordinating with one another as pastoral leaders to design a curriculum that is very personalized and rooted in Scripture and in the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Each course is developed with thoughts of the girls: who are these girls; how old are they; what does a girl need to hear about God and the culture we live in and the technological world she grows

up in? Courses are challenging in content and in expectations. By incorporating different learning styles, written and artistic expressions, faith in action through close examination of social justice needs, and a thoughtful study of five major world religions, each girl feels included in class discussions, activities, and content.

A Pilgrimage The pilgrimage through the eight-year program begins in fifth grade where, in addition to reading the Bible, contemporary fiction is incorporated to create a meaningful link between Scripture stories and the religious experience of a 10-year-old. The girls learn about Catholic traditions, the meaning of the liturgical seasons, and prayer rituals such as the rosary. In a wonderful group project expressed through art, the girls make their own rosary.

The sixth grade program introduces Hebrew Scriptures and the roots of the Judeo-Christian tradition. This study continues in greater depth in ninth grade. Understanding contemporary Judaism, its traditions, and its legacy of symbols, prayers, and songs strengthens our faith and our world community. Listening to a Jewish classmate, girls see another actively immersed in her faith. They come to understand how God is present to her, and value what it is to be a member of a spiritual community different from their own.

Seventh grade begins each class of New Testament narratives with a prayer circle. Prayer intentions range from pets to the refugees of Syria.

These 12-year-olds know what is going on in their world, and set out to change the world with prayer.

They invite God into the moment, the experience,

the anguish. The essential thing we want for all our girls is to take whatever is going on in their lives or in the world to God. Through the power of prayer we discover how we are a vessel through which God’s peace comes.

Middle School is fertile ground for self-discovery. Girls of this age see anything and everything as possible. Little things help them attach themselves to the gift of our faith. Girls create collages that represent God’s gifts to them. They write meaningfully on the School in its entirety as sacred space, with each girl reflecting on and illustrating a space at NCDS where the Holy Spirit is most present to her.

At a Lenten Chapel service that centered on the roughness of hearts and ways we contribute to that roughness, a paper heart, with smooth and sandpaper textures and with a hole to represent a loss, was given to each girl. She wrote a simple message to ask God for healing. The hearts were placed on a cross outside the Chapel. After Easter, each received a soft foam heart with no hole, a tangible to remind her that God returned the softness to her heart; a loss is healed.

for reflection. In the art studio girls integrate their artistic craft with their walk of faith. Works of art and written reflections on the chosen Scriptural verses connect to life and to religious experiences on personal, local, and global levels. The girls choose the direction and timeline of their projects. The freedom to start over and not despair elevates their approach to all their work. They discover that they are co-creators with God.

Art and Religion In 1999, Pope John Paul II called for a renewed partnership between the arts and the Church. He lauded the rich history of this partnership and celebrated art as nourishing while it teaches and as a source of theological thinking.

Years later, an eighth grade contemplative Religion/Art program with a culminating exhibition evolved from a trauma experienced. The incoming eighth grade girls returned to school without a beloved English teacher who was tragically killed.

Together, art teacher Mary Marley, whose beliefs are deeply rooted in Scripture, and I created a program for the girls’ renewal by combining the healing properties of beauty in art with the rejuvenating words of Scripture. As they wrestled with their loss, the girls came to a religion experience that was a sanctuary.

Growing in Faith “Every year I learn more about religion, faith, hope, love, and now, time. Reading through various selections from the Bible, I realize how important it is for God that we are aware of the fleeting nature of time.” – a m b i k a n a i r ’ 2 0 Faith in Action We don’t notice often enough how Scripture is so alive each day. As a Sacred Heart community we work to become more globally aware of human suffering and of our response. We are mindful of the Hearts for Haiti program and the global migrant issue. Turning again to Christian art, the girls see Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as refugees in Merson’s painting of “Rest on the Flight into Egypt.” Mary, at the foot of the Sphinx with baby Jesus asleep in her arms, is juxtaposed to today’s images of Syrian refugee parents and their babies.

Faith is about relationships. In ninth and tenth grades we review the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, Jesus’ response to the Commandments.

Sophomores are called to look out of themselves as they pull apart Scripture to craft homilies. The junior class study of Christianity and Contemporary Culture pairs theological writings with social justice issues. Jesus embraced the disenfranchised in His world. Today’s Hesed program of service and Sacred Heart Network Summer Projects give meaning to the question: who are we as children of God and what are we called to do.

World Religions We have had all religions present in our student body. Saint Madeleine Sophie believed it is essential that each girl leave us with the roots of her

faith tradition grown deeper and more reverent and with knowledge of other faith traditions, understanding each in its proper context and light, not viewed as extreme expressions. An understanding of religious pluralism is the hallmark of the senior study of Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. We are taught to see the other as our neighbor; that is the kingdom of God. The girls take what they learn here and in religion classes outside of school and strive to become contributing and meaningful members of their faith community. Our seniors are natural retreat leaders at school and in their parishes. They have been fed, and now they feed the younger ones. Many of our graduates seek a spiritual place on their college campus. Most often it is service or retreat based.

The Religion program is a full, well-rounded approach. Classroom instruction is coordinated with the spiritual dimension of our Chapel services in which all grades participate. Each girl cultivates an ability to discern, reflect, and make meaning of her tradition. Our girls leave us as women of faith.

Faith is God’s life in us. Faith gives us energy from the heart that helps us heal. It is the active reverberation of that energy that makes us a community. NCDS

A Rower’s Reflection “Don’t be afraid.”

A light head wind blows through Boston University Bridge. The October sun, warm on my back, cannot stop goose bumps from prickling my skin and my legs from quivering. Sitting in the Courageous, I gently rock back and forth, the wheels of the seat creaking under me. I focus on my breath, but every inhale catches in the back of my throat. I feel myself sinking into that lonely place of apprehension. Looking down at my feet strapped into the worn black shoes, I think, ‘How did I get here?’

I signed up for crew as a freshman. Now I sit at the start of the Head of the Charles Regatta. The oar handle, which usually fits comfortably in the palm of my hand, feels unnatural. As nerves threaten to become unbearable, a rower grabs my hand. It is a simple habit, not an elaborate ritual. Before every race my boat joins hands and prays. When we cannot breathe on our own, we breathe together.

Familiar words escape our lips in a barely audible murmur. The atmosphere around us becomes saturated with our nerves, hopes, and faith in each other.

Energy courses through our hands and what was once a hollow piece of fiberglass becomes one, living, organic being.

At our coxswain’s call, we begin to row, holding to this peaceful moment for a few grounding strokes until we cross the starting line. We are off. A raw feeling of adrenaline tears through my muscles, the power we built up over months of tireless training is released, and I know I am exactly where I belong.

In Luke’s Gospel (5:1-11) Jesus is beginning his Galilean Ministry, calling on fishermen to be his disciples. It is difficult to picture what the disciples must have thought and felt upon meeting Jesus for the first time. I imagine that they were overcome with many of the same emotions I felt before my race. Discouraged by not catching anything all night, Jesus asks them to cast their nets. They are reluctant.

However, when they drop their nets they catch a plethora of fish.

Similar to how the prestige of the Head the Charles intimidated me, the disciples are frightened

by Jesus’ miraculous glory.

They ask Jesus to ‘go away.’ I am sure they thought, ‘How did I get here? Why is Jesus calling on me?’ Just as my boat’s simple prayer gives me peace to tap into my strength and courage to race, Jesus’ simple words, ‘Don’t be afraid,’ inspires trust and solidarity.

They drop everything to follow Him. Solidarity is a powerful force. Groups overcome and achieve great things when directed toward a common goal. For my boat, solidarity carries us through difficult races. For the disciples, Jesus inspires a sense of responsibility to each other and to the world that compels them to disregard their hesitations and follow Him. The ability for Jesus to inspire solidarity with three words, ‘Don’t be afraid,’ is a testament to his leadership. He does not recruit disciples in a flashy, showy manner. The humbleness of His request inspires the disciples to open themselves up to Him. Direction in life comes from the humblest of leaders.

Open your mind and your heart to find who leads you to be your best self without changing you.

Who gives you the courage to act on your conscience – parents, siblings, friends, teachers, or a stranger who you observe helping others?

I challenge you. Be this humble leader for someone else. Just as the disciples learned from Jesus and went forth to teach the world, internalize the qualities of a humble leader and embody these in actions to others. Simple actions go a long way. NCDS

“During times such as these, global collaboration is especially important, which is why the Sacred Heart Exchange Program serves such a vital role in our education.” – c a r o l i n e m u r p h y r a c e t t e ’ 1 8 Seville, Spain: Emma Montgomery ’18 The Sacred Heart Exchange is educational, cultural, and challenging. The more work we put into it, the more we enjoy it. It is not easy to think outside of ourselves to host a three-week experience for a foreign-speaking stranger. Since Newton Country Day is first to host, I wanted Luisa to know how much energy and thought I put into her stay to make her comfortable and to introduce her to our city and culture so she would return to Seville excited to be my host. It was worth the work. We both enjoyed a wonderful experience in a foreign culture and greatly improved our language skills.

Holy Week’s Semana Santa processions were elaborate and included decorative costumes and enormous pasos [floats] carried by 50 men. The Good Friday Stations of the Cross procession is one memory that will stay with me. We walked two hours with the boys carrying a large cross, incense, and candles.

Along the route we stopped to read prayers. I was honored to be chosen a reader, in Spanish, at one of the Stations.

Rome, Italy: Caroline Murphy Racette ’18 I chose Rome because I am interested in the Classics and wanted to learn how modern Italian civilization has adapted since the period of Ancient Rome. An exchange to a non-English speaking country teaches skills that cannot be learned in a classroom: to find a way around

foreign cities, to tie acquired lingual skills into conversations, and to connect with people from around the world. During times such as these, global collaboration is especially important, which is why the Exchange Program serves such a vital role in our education. It taught me how to share my traditions with others and how to openly receive theirs. The purpose of the exchange is to challenge us to step out of our comfort zones and work through obstacles as independent young women.

A favorite memory was gathering with Catholics from all over the world in the epicentre of the globally Catholic congregation for Palm Sunday Mass said by the Holy Father. Pope Francis even prayed for the pilgrims attending World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland, an event I attended in July with my church!

Lima, Peru: Cate Brown ’18 Knowing nothing about Peru, I embraced the opportunity and the challenge and learned so much about myself. The Peruvian people are warm, welcoming, and generous, and the food is incredibly delicious. Using English and Spanish, I taught my gym class “Capture the Flag” and they wanted to play it for every class! In English we discussed politics. Both countries are in election mode. I explained our system of elections and learned about the Peruvian system, which I con-

tinue to follow. We learned origins of words used by different Spanish speaking nations in Spanish class. From a single word a person’s nationality can be determined. Now I am developing an ear for national differences in word usage. The cultural immersion totally popped the bubble of the world I live in!

Santiago, Chile: Lily Cloonan ’18 A school friend who went to Santiago on exchange encouraged me to test my Spanish III language skills and go somewhere that I otherwise would never visit as a tourist. I’m so happy that I did! I feel more confident in my skills and am determined to continue to learn and improve my Spanish.

Everyone was so welcoming at Colegio del Sagrado Corazón Monjas Inglesas and excited to practice their English with me!

Barcelona, Spain: Juliet Santo ’18 As a student of Spanish I wanted an exchange that would give me language immersion. Most people in Barcelona speak Catalan so adjusting to two languages was challenging. Experiencing an international exchange in a country with a different language really improves a language skill and is life-changing. A favorite memory was biking along la playa Barceloneta; the views were spectacular.

Barcelona, Spain: Jordan Lawlor ’18 I spent three incredible weeks in Barcelona with my exchange sister. The city is beautiful. The cathedrals are breathtaking. At first the language barrier was difficult, but before long I was participating in conversations and making friends with students of Sagrat Cor Sarria and with girls I met from Sacred Heart schools around the world. When it was time to come home, I did not want to say goodbye!

Miami, Florida: Samantha Tripp ’18 In this year of renewed relations with Cuba I wanted to explore the rich Cuban culture within the United States. I chose a National Exchange to the Carrollton School in Miami. My host family encouraged me to speak in Spanish as much as possible. The exchange gave me an appreciation of how diverse different parts of the US are.

Vienna, Austria: Victoria Lynch ’18 Austria is a country saturated with artistic and musical history which I am passionate about. A trip with my host family to Salzburg was special. The beautiful countryside and Alps frame the small city.

It was absolutely worth stepping outside my comfort zone. I learned so much about the world and myself.

I returned to the States more enriched in courage, confidence, and self-esteem. NCDS

Since Newton Country Day is first to host, I wanted Luisa to know how much energy and thought I put into her stay to make her comfortable and to introduce her to our city and culture so she would return to Seville excited to be my host.

“Don’t yield to moral fatigue.”

DR. HENRY ROSOVSKY, Harvard University Professor of Economics Emeritus, father of English teacher Michael Rosovsky, and grandfather of Abigail ’16 and Gabrielle Rosovsky ’21, addressed the graduates.

Professor Rosovsky chaired the Economics Department at Harvard, was a long-time Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, and twice served as Acting President. The recipient of many international awards, he is distinguished as the first University faculty member in a century to be named to the Harvard Corporation, Harvard’s governing body.

A prolific author, Dr. Rosovsky co-chaired the 2000 Task Force on Higher Education and Society sponsored by the World Bank and UNESCO. His book, “The University: An Owner’s Manual,” is widely received.

Henry Rosovsky was born in the Free City of Danzig (Gdańsk), Poland in 1927 to Russian Jewish parents. After German forces attacked Poland, he came to the United States. Graduating from the College of William and Mary in 1949, the same year he became a naturalized US citizen, he served with the US Army before earning his Ph.D from Harvard. Prior to his tenure at Harvard, Dr. Rosovsky taught at the University of California at Berkeley and was a visiting professor in Japan and Israel.

“My family arrived in the US in 1940 as Jewish/ Hitler refugees. Within a few months I started to speak English. Our family frequently took the train from the North to the South. The train stopped in Washington, DC where all black passengers left the carriages and went to a special Jim Crow Car at the rear of the train. In Miami, many apartment houses had big signs at their entrances that said ‘RESTRICTED.’ That meant no Jews.

“Looking back I ask: why did I ride these trains without giving it a second thought? Why do we go along with many forms of injustice and evil for such long periods of time?

“Now think of the current refugee crisis encompassing Syria, Africa, Asia, and many countries.

How many times can you read these horrors? Am I suffering from ‘refugee fatigue’ or perhaps more accurately ‘moral fatigue?’

“There is no need to be passive: one person, with help, can change the world.” Dr. Rosovsky described a Bangladeshi friend who founded Asian University for Women “to take women from mind-numbing work in garment factories to the liberation of a liberal education. That is changing the world for the better.

“You are about to embark on a great adventure, college and adult life. I end with suggestions based on my experience. First, be impatient with evil. Second, don’t yield to moral fatigue. Third, help change the world.”

Sixty-six members of the Class of 2016 taught me [about] friendship and unconditional love. We faced the tragedy of losing Erin and we stood together. We will be united always.

This gift of education we celebrate is only valuable when we engage with the world [that] desperately needs your intelligence, your leadership, and most importantly your kindness. May God continue to equip and empower women with selfless courage, limitless dreams, and unshakable faith. May we use our voice to boldly declare veritas et amor, truth and love.

Over the course of our years I’ve watched my classmates open up and share their talents in ways that inspire. We have seen each other at our strongest and at our most vulnerable, and been received with love at every step. On behalf of the Class of 2016, I thank our families who support us.

Campus Highlights Freshman wins Top Science Awards and Internships Emma Kelly ’19 won a string of top awards at the 2016 Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Fair (MSSEF) for her project “Ovarian Cancer: Clues to Giving Women the Gift of Time.”

Judges at the May event held at MIT awarded the freshman contender First Prize, the US Naval Science Award, a college scholarship, and the coveted ImmunoGen Research Internship which allows her to observe and participate in research departments of Massachusetts pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

“During the six-hour competition I presented to the five judges assigned to me as well as to floating judges that can include

designated judges who decide the special awards,” she explains. “I got great feedback and was asked extremely interesting questions. The public speaking skills, the scientific insight I gained from these experiences, and opportunities to work with professional scientists have changed my life forever.”

Four days prior to the State Science Fair, Emma was one of 10 MSSEF individual project presenters to showcase her research as part of the STEM Student Fair of the Education Writers Association’s National Seminar. She presented her research and findings, conducted under the guidance of biology teacher Ms. Melissa Bleakney, to Dorie Turner Nolt, Press Secretary for the US Department of Education, and to Cora Beth Abel, president of MSSEF.

The freshman’s road to winning select state science awards and opportunities started with the School’s Science and Engineering Fair in March. She won First Place for her independent research that focuses on the possibility of demographic factors of higher Body Mass Index, age, and ethnicity as a predictor of high risk populations for epithelial ovarian cancer. The goal of her research is to provide primary care physicians with information that could lead to an earlier diagnosis of this deadliest of gynecological cancers.

NCDS Science Fair judges invited Emma to present her project before numerous Massachusetts General Hospital and Dana Farber Institute Gyn/Oncology teams.

and her articulate presentation, MGH oncologists offered Emma extraordinary summer and school year opportunities to shadow doctors, observe clinical trials with nurses, and work alongside cancer researchers.

Emma’s string of successful presentations continues. On October 8th, she was invited to return to the MIT campus to participate in the MA Junior Academy of Sciences Symposium in the Biological and Environmental Science competition. She was selected as one of the top four presenters.

During the week of February 16-20, 2017, Emma will represent Newton Country Day School as a delegate to the American Junior Academy of Sciences.

Artist is National Medalist Diana Lee ’17 is a 2016 Scholastic Art Awards National Medalist for her work “Divide and Conquer.” Works submitted to the Scholastic Art Awards, the nation’s most FALL 2016

prestigious recognition program for creative teens, are judged on originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision.

“When I picture the theme of ‘divide and conquer,’ I see mountains to be conquered in small steps and with a heroic effort of blood and sweat,” she explains as she walks through her creation of about 40 layers of composition.

Diana manipulates digital images through Photoshop to create contrast, adjust for proportion, draw out an emphasis, and give value to her theme.

Pixel by pixel she builds the visual narrative by adjusting each layer’s color contrast, saturation, tint, and hues to sharpen or subdue its definition. This is evident in “Divide and Conquer” with clouds that yield blood rain, J. C. Leyendecker’s image of a boy scout, and the craggy mountain with its highway, fencing, forestry, and river.

Her artistry soars as she takes a large digital photograph, such as the mountain, and breaks it into smaller parts to gather only the elements of the original image that tell her story and create her perceived balance. As she adds each layer, proportional adjustments are made or elements from another piece are incorporated. Leyendecker’s image of the boy scout cradled a sword. Her alteration of cradled scissors demanded fine adjustment of fingers and wrist. Her diligent attention to theme that penetrates each pixel, each line, each layer, each treatment of color, vaulted Diana into the arena of America’s most creative teens.

This year the talented senior is tackling AP Studio Art: 2-D Design, a course that normally spans two years.

MMEA Music Festival First Violinists Olivia Czech ’20 is among 132 of the best musicians in grades 7-9 across Metropolitan Boston. Auditioning for the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Eastern District Junior Orchestra she successfully won a second consecutive MMEA seat in the First Violin section. In addition to her Middle School commitment to the Concert Band, Olivia plays in youth orchestras and chamber groups at the New England Conservatory, one of the finest youth orchestras in the world.

Euna Lee ’16, Claire Picken ’17, and Maddie Tango ’17 were among the 375 top instrumental musicians and choral voices selected from 1,100 high school candidates from across the state to the MMEA All-State Music Festival. Euna won a coveted First Violin seat in the in the All-State Orchestra.

Claire and Maddie performed in the soprano section in the All-State Chorus. Following two days in rehearsals and workshops at the World Trade Center, the All-State Concert was held at historic Symphony Hall.

Newton News PRISM Celebrates 20 Years A 20-year anniversary celebration of PRISM brought together the co-founders, past members, faculty co-moderators, and current members to share experiences and the excitement of the committee’s legacy.

Robert W. Murrell Jr., Chair of the Visual Arts Department PRISM founders, Elizabeth Mitchell 97, Enuma Menkiti ’97, and Anita Handy ’98, three of the small number of students of color in a predominately white Upper School, were impelled to create a place where students of like experiences could support each other, discuss their common experiences, and address the social climate as it affected them and the NCDS community. They saw an opportunity to invite other schoolmates from disparate backgrounds to join the conversation, to share commonalities, to celebrate differences, and to help NCDS grow more as an inclusive community; hence, PRISM: People for a Racially Inclusive Society of Multiculturalism.

Initially, PRISM was seen as a committee for “the Black Kids.” This was not the intended goal. Succeeding co-heads urged others to join; to make the “I” and the “M” in PRISM real.

It took courage to approach the administration about a topic that was not on anyone’s agenda: a student multicultural committee. It took confidence to realize the need, develop a plan, and believe that it would make a positive difference. The founders truly are Sacred Heart women. With faculty and staff support, PRISM is one of the School’s enduring committees. I am and always have been proud to be associated with PRISM as a [20-year] Co-Moderator.

It is a pleasure to see these young women develop into civic-minded and involved citizens. They touch lives and make a positive difference. They speak truth to power and a commitment to Goal III: “to educate to a social awareness which impels to action.”

Enuma Menkiti ’97, Co-founder “I am excited to be here. Thank you for keeping the legacy of PRISM going! I arrived at Newton as a 13-year-old, half Nigerian, half

Texan, and home-schooled. My parents are well educated, yet I grew up without a car, without a TV. Needless to say, when I came to Newton, my experience was very different from many students who are privileged to be here. Within a few months two things were clear: I absolutely loved the School, and I felt like an outsider.

“The School offers amazing opportunities to grow. I wrote a proposal and reached out to Mr. Murrell. Our idea then took on a life of its own. It speaks volumes for the School that we were able to project an idea and with the support of the institution to make it a reality.

“Wherever you go, when you encounter a space you care about but don’t feel a part of, don’t shy away, change it; make it an environment where you have a voice, a place where you can be a true member of that community.”

Current PRISM Co-Heads thanked the founders and past committee members who recognized the importance of diversity in the context of the Sacred Heart Goals, and spoke of PRISM’s recent accomplishments and goals.

Teams Win League Titles Varsity field hockey and varsity volleyball captured 2015 Eastern Independent League titles. Field hockey (13-2-2 overall, 12-0-2 EIL) rolled to a third consecutive title and volleyball (13-4 overall, 10-2 EIL) took a second consecutive EIL crown. In post-season EIL Open Tournaments, field hockey staged two shutouts to capture the trophy and volleyball split the tournament. The teams won bids to host New England Prep School Athletic Conference Tournaments. Field hockey is a NEPSAC Class “C” semifinalist and volleyball is a Class “B” quarterfinalist.

National Recognition The National Field Hockey Coaches Association selected Elizabeth Warner ’17 to the 2015 High School Field Hockey All-Region Teams. Elizabeth was one of thirteen players on the Massachusetts Team. At the end of her 2015 season, the varsity three-year starter was voted an All-New England D-III Player and the league MVP. Playing attack, she was the team’s top scorer and point-getter in both sophomore and junior years.

Perfect JV Basketball Team Retires Home Gym “Fourteen games into the season, we averaged a 13-point halftime lead and a 22-point win,” says Coach Cole Stephenson (History). “One tough challenge remained, Dana Hall. For 25 minutes the Dragons ran us off the court with superior speed, a stifling 2-3 defense, and excellent shots. We had trailed for a mere five minutes all season long and now we trailed the entire game. With three minutes to the final buzzer and Dana leading by 9, we encouraged our girls to chip away, remain focused, and to trust each other. They shut down their nemesis and summoned a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Our girls finished an 18-1 run in the final six minutes to come back from a nearly impossible deficit and win by eight points. Clinching a sixteenth and final victory in front of a giant home crowd, we retired our 56-year old gym, capping a magical undefeated season.”

NEPSAC All-Star Sophia Reardon ’17 was voted a 2016 NEPSAC Class “C” East All-Star for basketball for a third consecutive year. “She took her game to a new level for her junior campaign,” says Coach Evan Adair (English). “Playing guard, Sophia led the Falcons with an average of 13 points- and 6.1 rebounds-per-game. The top scorer in 20 of 21 season games, Sophia achieved a season high of 32 points in a game against Pingree to give her a three-year career total of 630 points.”

Atop the Leaderboard Varsity golf team Captain Patrice Power ’17 topped the 9-Hole Division leaderboard in the 31st annual Pippy O’Connor Independent School Girls’ Golf Classic held at Bulls Bridge Golf Club, CT. Competing in a field of 40 players representing 16 independent schools she carded a 40, a six-stroke win over the second place finisher.

Varsity Sailing finished third in the Massachusetts Bay League “C” Division.

DC celebrated Reunion on May 7th. Festivities for alumnae and their guests commenced with a gathering of a record-breaking number of 50th Reunion classmates in the Library reading room and a ceremonial Jubilee tree-planting along the walkway to the new Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center. Many Reunion attendees took an opportunity to tour the new facility.

Sister Rogers welcomed the alumnae at dinner in the gym. She received a round of cheers from the Class of 1996 that had the highest class percentage attending Reunion and the highest class participation in gifts to the Annual Fund. The Class of 1966 was second in class percentage of attendance.

So many happy memories of my years at NCDS; Mother Gabrielle Husson, Mother Gallagher, and Mother Wheeler were truly interested in teaching us to be well-educated, to give to the less fortunate, and to appreciate our Catholic faith.

dent of Fidelity Wealth Technologies, a unit of Fidelity Investments. Mike also serves as interim chief executive officer of eMoney Advisor, a wealth planning and management solutions provider for financial advisors, part of the Fidelity Wealth Technologies portfolio. Prior to joining Fidelity in 2009, Mike was with Morgan Stanley for eighteen years.

October 2016 Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends, On behalf of Sister Rogers and our fellow trustees, thank you for the unprecedented generosity to Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart through your philanthropy and volunteerism.

Every gift you make to Newton Country Day is an investment in our students, faculty, and the future of our school. Whether you purchased an item at the Très Bien Auction; made a donation to the Martin Center, the Annual Fund, or a scholarship fund, your continued support demonstrates a strong belief in our mission to educate young women to assume leadership in making God’s love known throughout the world.

Newton Country Day alumnae, parents, and friends supported the School with more than $4.1 million in gifts as well as countless volunteer hours. The Annual Fund raised more than $1.45 million in support of financial aid, faculty enrichment, and many other school programs. Generosity and dedication are evidence of the deep love for the mission of the School.

The Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center opened in September. The new facility will have a transformative impact on the girls for years to come. We are grateful for the generosity of our alumnae, parents, and friends who made this a reality.

Our Très Bien Annual Auction was a grand slam! Held at Fenway Park’s State Street Pavilion, participants raised more than $455,000. The Auction Committee and its enthusiastic volunteers worked tirelessly to make the 2016 auction the School’s most successful.

We are grateful for the blessings that abound in our community: the devotion of parents, faculty, alumnae, and friends who continue to want the best for the girls; the fine work of talented teachers and staff who nurture a passion for learning in our girls; and tireless dedication of volunteers who enrich our School. “We run a booth at the annual Atlanta Gift Show alongside thousands of vendors.

Every small order creates an annuity for the business. With our nationwide contingent of sales reps, retailers, and suppliers we are hundreds of minds building the business.

My crew is my core; they are efficient, hard-working, and vested. It’s an alive and exciting ‘mompreneurial’ business. We wake the kids for school, get them to the bus, race to the shop with everyone doing the whole job, and are home in the afternoon.

“With a good grasp of our growth and business goals, our line has grown from pillows to tote bags, catch-all purses, sweatshirt blankets, rugs, and key chains finished with a 1950s New Bedford kick-press machine. Tina Lawlor ’88 helped build our website and business strategies. Seeing our work in the stores is inspiring. It’s about

putting ourselves on a little plot of land in the whole big world!

“It takes passion and confidence to try something new and to ask others their opinion. It takes versatility, excitement, and a strong will and work ethic to succeed. This I learned from my parents.

In 2012 Stephanie Ferrone Baynes ’90, a Beth Israel intensive care nurse, created a custom pillow for the Marshfield Hills General Store. Store owners leapt at a chance to sell the one-of-a kind item.

Today, the enterprising mother of two (ages 10 and 12), with no background in business or sales, has a personalized product line in 500 shops nationwide and at the Très Bien Auction.

“Life is too short not to embrace what is in front of us,” says Stephanie of the unprecedented success of Marshes, Fields & Hills (MFH). “In eighth grade, religion teacher Sister Rogers recognized my potential as an artist – I was caught drawing in class. Sister Rogers guided my talent and confidence to build me as a woman who would be making future choices and – STEPHANIE FERRONE BAYNES ’90 decisions.”

The daughter of a surgeon and a nurse tried multiple career paths including operating room surgical technician and an emotionally and physically draining year in the Organ Bank before earning a BSN from UMass Boston. She devoted the next 12 years to patients at Beth Israel Hospital.

“I left nursing in 2015 when MFH took off. I miss the intensity of nursing, but the creativity with my business and great crew never stops. Once we sold our line to local shops, orders came quickly. To keep up, I painted late into the night in my third floor attic space using individual stencils taped to graph paper. I moved the business three times in as many years and now am in a 2,500-square foot space in Pembroke with a Stephanie Ferrone Baynes ’90 (seated) team of six and four powerful and her Marshes, Fields & Hills team. machines to create stencils.

Très Bien Auction The Très Bien Auction Committee hit a home run taking the 42nd annual event to Fenway Park, the oldest American ballpark still in use. Congratulations to the 2016 Leadership Team of Deirdre Franchi P’16’18, Laura O’Connor P’16’18, Karen Sweeney P’17, Susie Wagner P’17, and their corps of volunteers for pitching such an exciting evening.

The March 5th signature fundraiser for the School raised more than $455,000.

The Silent Auction, held in the EMC Pavilion with the 2004, 2007, and 2013 World Series trophies on display, offered bidders a view from home plate to the Green Monster and the video/scoreboard over the center-field bleachers welcoming Newton Country Day guests. Dinner and the Live Auction were hosted high above the 1912 first base line in the State Street Pavilion.

Enticing items for bid included a creative package of hotel rooms, jewelry, gift certificates to restaurants, and museum and theatre outings; a Peloton Bike complete with spin shoes, coaching, and training; a private tour of the White House East Wing and the US Capitol building; James Taylor concert at Fenway Park with hotel and dinner; luxurious get-aways to the Breakers in Palm Beach and Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic; dinner for 20 at Granary Tavern; tickets to the Presidential Inauguration and Ball and to a Justin Bieber concert. John “Mike” Harrington, father of Trustee Ellen Harrington ’77 and husband of the late former Trustee E. Patricia Harrington, died November 8, 2015. A World War II veteran, John served with the US Army in the European theatre. In 1950 he joined the law firm of Ropes & Gray. His law career, which included chairing the firm’s litigation department, spanned more than four decades. He also spent two years as an Assistant US Attorney. John was a member of numerous professional committees and served on elected committees for the town of Winchester, alumni clubs and boards affiliated with Roxbury Latin School and Harvard University, and as President of the Union Club and Trustee of St. Sebastian’s School. John was the father of six children, twelve grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Sister Irene Cotter ’40 died December 10, 2015. Irene was predeceased in 1990 by her sister Veronica Cotter, RSCJ ’38. The Cotter family was so devoted to the Religious and to Philippine Duchesne that they commissioned an oil painting of Philippine at the time of her beatification. The painting hangs outside the School Chapel.

A passionate and courageous advocate for the poor and long-time member of the Newton College of the Sacred Heart faculty, Sister Faine McMullen died on December 27, 2015, days shy of her 102nd birthday. A 1937 Fordham University Law School graduate, she practiced law for seven years before entering the Society.

Her early years as a Religious were spent at Newton Country Day and at Eden Hall in PA. Faine made her final vows on February 10, 1954 and taught political science and history at Newton College.

She took two years in 1967 to answer the call of Vatican II to live in Roxbury and work for the Boston Department of Health and Hospitals. During this time, the ardent follower of Dorothy Day cofounded the Planning Office of Urban Affairs for the Boston Archdiocese and became immersed in social activism. In 1974 Faine moved to Washington, DC; was admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia; and provided free legal assistance to the poor. Nine years later she moved to Chicago’s Sheridan Road community to offer free legal services at Howard Area Community Center and direct the Senior Advocacy Program for the Archdiocese. At age 76 she became a parish volunteer for senior advocacy in New Orleans. In 1993 Faine retired to Kenwood and Teresian House where she continued to pursue issues of poverty, homelessness, and social justice.

Irene entered the Society in June 1942 and became a beloved teacher at Kenwood in Albany and at Overbrook in PA. She made her final profession in Rome on July 30, 1950. She taught at Kenwood and at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, 91st Street in New York City while furthering her education at the University of Notre Dame. In the 1970s she chose different ministries. After taking courses in nursing she worked for five years in the Kenwood infirmary and became the Director and spiritual moderator for the Kenwood Braille Society. Irene next dedicated decades of work in the finance offices at 91st Street and in treasury offices at the Provincial House and at Greenwich.

Retiring to the cottage community at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, she became a chocolatier and assisted with admission coordination for the Greenwich Summer Outreach program.

At her funeral Mass at Teresian House, Irene’s friend of sixty years, Sister Ginny Schumann, offered a reading and Sister Joan Magnetti gave the homily.

Class Notes 1949 Connie Duane Donahue attended Newton Country Day from third to eighth grade, leaving when her family moved. Over the years she stayed in touch with classmates, especially Ann Fulton Coté. Now in Arizona, she returned to MA for her brother’s memorial service and visited the School with her daughter Molly (who attended Woodlands), pointing out her “Junior Classroom” (the Chorale practice room) and where her seat was in “Study Hall” (Barat Commons). She was awed by the Library and the Sweeney Husson wing, and reminisced about girlhood afternoons skating on the outdoor rink (site of the 1960’s gym) and racing down the back hill on toboggans. Her visit to the Chapel was a “coming home” moment.

1956 Joyce Dwyer writes: “We missed all of you who were unable to attend our 6oth Reunion.

Agnes Sullivan O’Brien, Jeanne Hanrihan Connolly and I contacted as many of you as possible and gleamed a few news items. The evening prior to Reunion, Agnes, Jeanne, Judy Nolan Crimmins, Nancy Madden Leamy, Mary Eagan Boland, Carole Higgins O’Connor, and I gathered at Charles River Country Club for a festive dinner. Reunion events at NCDS included a tour of the new athletic/wellness facility, the alumnae Mass in our beautiful Chapel, and Reunion dinner.

While much has changed with the times, the values, ideals, and academic excellence of a Sacred Heart education remain. We extend our appreciation to Barbara Rogers, RSCJ and the faculty and staff for planning and hosting the events. Agnes divides her time between Needham, Quechee, VT during the summer, and Sarasota, FL in the winter while keeping abreast of her nine grandchildren’s activities.

Jeanne resides on the Cape where she enjoys the beach, her chorale group, book club, and volunteer activities for cancer survivors at Cape Cod Hospital. Judy lives in Enfield, CT, plays golf in a women’s league, and visits her five children around the US. Nancy, as pretty FALL 2016

December 2015 One hundred years is a long time to live, but this birthday brought me many surprises. It was a surprise to be remembered with love by so many people; this made me even more grateful to God. A few days in advance I found out about the special part of the celebration. Sister Barbara Rogers brought from Newton Country Day School 27 members of the Schola Cantorum with their director and accompanist [John Sullivan and Anne Tripp Miller]. They came to Albany by bus from Newton, dressed in their black velvet dresses with delicate pearls. They sang before, during, and after our Eucharistic celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. They were so representative and added to Our Lady’s Feast.

I’m also grateful to so many who sent cards which arrived day after day to remind me of the influence I had on my students and what it was in me that touched them. I am so grateful to God for giving me 100 years, and I am celebrating Him present here at Teresian House showing Himself now in a way I had not known before. And so the messages come!

Class Notes and vivacious as ever, is still ‘on the ice.’ She teaches and coaches young skaters preparing for competition including an inline ensemble of synchronized ice dancers. Mary is busy with a limited law practice, travels to exotic locations, and keeps track of her children’s careers. In Andover, Carole enjoys her five sons and grandchildren who live nearby. In Cambridge, Mary Elizabeth Brush Field anticipates a move back to a country environment. Jane Dunn LaVoie loves her new role as a grandmother relishing every moment with her granddaughter. Kay Leland, MD retired from a pediatric practice on the Cape and is transitioning from Campton, NH to a retirement community on the NH/VT border. She spends time in FL in the winter. Gay Ferrone Thomas traveled from AZ to Boston in June for her brother Joe’s 80th birthday. I am well and enjoy walking my two dogs an hour and a half daily and playing 18 holes of golf at CRCC. I am sorry to report the death of Shaun Crowley Pardini. Best wishes to all. Keep in touch.”

1958 Betsy Gannon writes: “Nonie MacNeil Barclay is in Duxbury and active in her parish and with the Senior Center. David and Eleanor Donovan Driscoll enjoy living in Boston. They have five grandchildren.

Mimi Kelly does some film work in NC and frequently visits her daughter in Washington, DC. Anne Sullivan Lyons taught writing lessons in a granddaughter’s school. Her active grandchildren love visiting Anne and Ken on the Cape. John and Sue Full McCann took a 14-day trip through the Canadian Rockies which she says is the most beautiful of all her trips. One son is an EMT and another is an assistant school principal in the neighboring town. Her four grandchildren are the stars in her eyes. Pat Hannon Moyes has switched her southern CA gardens to succulents due to severe droughts. She, her daughter, and granddaughters cruised through the Panama Canal in July. An avid quilter, she made contact with other quilters on the cruise to quilt together.

Barbara Gannon Wilson celebrated her 75th birthday on Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa, the site of her grandson’s wedding! Leo and Midge Conner Winkel’s busy lives include work in a food pantry and golf.

1962 Alex and Mitzi Byrnes Frueauf downsized and moved to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, on a golf course close to Pine Point Beach.

1963 Bill and Christine Messina Mullen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May 2015 with a three-week cruise of the

Mediterranean beginning in Barcelona and ending in Venice with stops in France, Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece. The Mullens have four children and 12 grandchildren.

Mujer, and The Healthcare Chaplaincy. She was an author, photographer, and co-founder of ReBoot Partmers. Her daughters are 16 and 13, so life involves lots of driving. Libby is on the Board of Directors of Press Pass TV – a nonprofit that offers workforce development skills in media arts to youth. Nick and Julia Recchia Bisconti’s son Zachary is a freshman at Tulane University. Zach graduated Lynnfield High School with High Honors. Class Notes the long Minnesota winters by coaching skiing and wearing a lot of wool. Christine looks forward to reconnecting with classmates at our 2018 Reunion. Walter and Paige Cleary Somol took their three kids to Italy in summer 2015. They stayed in the charming town of Campione on Lake Lugano. A ropes course in the Swiss Alps was a highlight.

The family stopped in Verona, then Venice, and finished in Florence. The Somol family now has the travel bug. Paige’s son is a senior in high school. As for me, Steve and I look forward to the 2s with daughter Ellie. When I’m not chasing Ellie at the playground, I’m sailing or working as the Head of Marketing Strategy for the Large Corporate and Individual Markets at Voya Financial.”

1994 Bree Sullivan Evarts writes: “Audrey Maeve Hager Barker is in Montrose, Victoria, Australia and completed a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning from Charles Darwin University. This qualifies her to be a drama teacher specializing in secondary colleges (high school). Tim and Kristen Doyle Castree live in NYC with their 6-year old daughter and 4-year old son. Marc and Kristin Corazzini Ciaramitaro have three children: Mia, Sophia, and Nicholas. After taking time off to be with two children, Maria Gagliardi DeLeon accepted a job as the CFO of Latitude Beverage, the Boston based wine company and makers of 90+ Cellars. Anita Handy-Velasquez is the Student Dean at Match Community Day School in Mattapan. Now in her fourth year, she works with K-1 through second grade students and is a dance teacher at the school.

Rochelle Williams-Belizaire is in her second year as program director of the Women’s Moonshot Program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She is positioned to build a sustainable research and financial program for the hospital. The Moonshot Program parallels the concept of the 1960s Space Race whereby MD Anderson seeks to marshal the resources to launch ambitious “moon shots,” initiatives to clinically impact cancer patients’ lives with a mission to cure cancers. Rochelle joined the 20-Year PRISM celebration as she and Jonas were in Boston for their son Christian’s Christening.

I am in my third year in Australia touring with my second Disney Musical, ‘Aladdin.’ I finished the Australian tour of ‘Lion King,’ which was absolutely life changing. It’s amazing that I’ve pursued the arts since I was five and have been blessed to see it through to this point in my life. I pass on encouragement to the young ladies at NCDS, especially to those considered the minority, that there is no regret in following your passion with courage and confidence! I sure have! After the tour of ‘Aladdin,’ the next stop is definitely Broadway for me!”

2007 Samantha Attenborough is in Regensburg, a small city in Bavaria, Germany for 18 months. She writes: “I work for the German grocery chain Lidl which is planning to open stores in the US in 2017. I am training here for a district manager position in the US. I’m really excited to see this enterprise in Europe take on the US market and to help the company grow.” Cathleen Kenary is a resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

2008 Vivian Buchanan finished her third year teaching at the Health & Human Services High School, part of Lawrence High School. It was her first year teaching AP Calculus. She also taught geometry and MCAS prep, coached soccer, and ran the Rubik’s Cube Club (earning second place at a competition!). Jill Carlson is completing her Masters in Politics at Oxford University where she focused on financial technology and economic regulation. In her spare time she trains for and competes in triathlons. She resides in Somerville with Gemma Yie. Kiki Dolan works at TodayTix in Boston. She manages the expansion of the mobile app into new cities. TodayTix app is for last-minute theater and performing arts tickets. “I love the company and its mission to make theater more accessible and affordable globally. My love for theater started at NCDS. It’s great to come full circle and have a career in the performing arts.”

At this writing, Nora Hajjar works for Hillary For America at the Brooklyn Headquarters doing campaign Data Analytics. Marquita James welcomed baby boy, Micah. A travel nurse, Abby Kelley moves to a new hospital every 3 months. Recent cities include Raleigh, Houston, New Orleans, and San Diego. In Atlanta, GA, Kirstin Oates DiMarco works as a marketing coordinator and design assistant for Carol Guest Interiors. Kaibeth Peña-Cruz graduated from UMass, Boston with an MS in Human Services. She is a Program Supervisor at a homeless shelter for mothers and children. Cara Stuka works as a Program Representative at Boston’s Pine Street Inn. Sarah Torrence Shapleigh is a Senior Strategist at The Marketing Arm, a marketing agency in Dallas. She and Michael

Theresa Sullivan is working towards her MFA degree in Poetry at Sarah Lawrence College. Recipient of the Joan Baldwin Scholarship, she will direct the SLC Poetry Festival, the largest student run poetry festival in NY, as she completes her thesis collection. At Michael and Ali O’Keeffe Zebrowski’s wedding, Ali’s great aunts (all NCDS alumnae) were present and sister Katie O’Keeffe was maid of honor. Ali and Michael live in Richmond, VA until she graduates from University of Virginia School of Law in 2017.

Alumnae on 2016 HMUN Staff Harvard University students Catherine Brennan ’13 and Christina Neckermann ’15, co-chairs of Model UN in their respective NCDS senior years, were members of the 2016 Harvard Model UN staff. Catherine, the HMUN Director of Administration & Faculty Relations, moderated the international Faculty Advisor Discussion Panel, posing questions and facilitating discussion. Christina was Assistant Director for the European Union in the Economic and Social Council. As a dais member she guided committee sessions and acted as a liaison between delegates and the EU Director. Twenty-four NCDS students participated in the HMUN Conference.

Sophie Afdhal is conducting research under Dr. Michael Curry, chief of the Liver Center Beth Israel, and Dr Zobair Younossi, Chairman of Gastroenterology and vice president for research at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA where Sophie works. Margaret Carroll is a sixth grade social studies teacher for the Natick Public Schools. Madeline Connolly is a second grade teacher at St. Theresa’s, West Roxbury. Caroline Corbett has a Master’s in Geological Sciences with a concentration in satellite oceanography from the University of South Carolina.

Boston College junior Kelly Rafferty is a member of 4 Boston, a part of Campus Ministry. She volunteers at the Commonwealth Tenants Association as a home tutor for a 6th grade girl.

College of the Holy Cross swimmer, junior Maeve Westover was selected one of 200 student-athletes to attend the June NCAA Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis. One of four chosen to represent the Patriot League, her time at the forum built leadership, development, and networking skills alongside NCAA professionals and collegiate-athletes who wish to pursue a career in athletics. Currently in Doha, Qatar with the Georgetown School of Foreign Service program, Maeve will complete her junior studies in Washington, DC. 71

Class Notes Journey of Knowledge Alexa Riobueno-Naylor ’13 For nine days in January I was surrounded by resilience. Never have I experienced such obvious poverty, such lack of resources, and infrastructural deficiencies.

I returned home with memories of the people, the babies I held, the reality of poverty that I was exposed to, and with a faith that will always remain with me. This faith was ignited and instilled in me by the beautiful Nicaraguans in Puertas Azules, El Naranjo, and El Cebollal. It was maintained through the work I completed through the Global Brigades model. No matter the circumstances in which they live, the Nicaraguan people I met possess an unwavering faith and love.

Although they spoke about their chronic conditions, their medical histories, and the reality of their environmentally toxic conditions, never did they complain or talk ill of their lives.

The minute we arrived, our Wellesley College brigade began our journey of knowledge. We were not there to teach, but to be taught how to help, how to heal, and how to better understand. We prepared

suitcases of medical supplies and medicine, reviewed basic triage skills, and boarded the bus for the 2-hour uphill drive to the isolated community. During the three days in the medical clinic we saw 557 patients.

They walked hours up and down unpaved, rocky terrain to receive dental, gynecological, medical, and pharmaceutical care.

We also participated in public health days, working alongside families to build sanitary stations and put concrete floors in their homes. The building of showers, washing stations, and septic tanks, alongside the laying of concrete floors, allowed all 27 brigadiers to understand the derivation of many of the problems we saw in clinic: back problems from bending over to wash clothes with heavy rocks in the river, vaginal infections and skin rashes due to a lack of clean water for bathing, infections and rashes contracted by walking on dirt floors, and parasites due to a lack of clean drinking water.

At the finish of each of the public health projects, we signed our names on the products. We left a blessing. Our names are symbols of love, hope, faith, and gratitude towards a people who welcomed us without question, with the understanding that we were all there to help, teach, and love. Con amor y gratitude.
