From the Headmistress October 2015 Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends of Sacred Heart, Watching the Athletic & Wellness Center take shape intensifies our zeal to continue to shape the spiritual, intellectual, and physical well-being of our girls. It is our hope that as each girl comes to know and experience God’s deep love for her she will grow to fill her irreplaceable role in this world. The need is great for women of intellect and compassion, for women who are thoughtful problem-solvers and who act in the world with confidence, for women who will change the world for the good.

We empower our girls by challenging them, by awakening them to their potential and their gifts, and by sharing in their joys and in their difficulties. It is within this sphere of influence and relationship that we emerge transformed and strengthened in the knowledge of the vital role we are to play in making visible God’s love.

The stories in this issue of Très Bien compose a symphony of the many ways we work together. Dedicated faculty mold our girls into competent thinkers and doers.

Our girls grow in appreciation and respect for history and cultural heritage, begin to comprehend the needs of the poor, and grapple with global issues. They are eager to assist other young women. The commitment of our girls to support girls around the world is inspiring. Because our girls are cared for and loved, and because they recognize that life is exciting and it is fragile, they are hungry to learn and eager to make a difference.

Finding the right balance is crucial to having the girls excel. In tenth grade, for example, we might find an Algebra I student and an AP Calculus student.

Small class size lends itself to developing an understanding of how each girl learns. I may explain something and recognize that the approach is not working for a particular student, so I provide a different explanation. It is awesome to see a girl’s strategy. Sometimes when working on a trig identity or geometric proof, a student will work a problem backwards, and get to the answer. When the girls understand the underpinnings of a math formula, they can apply it in various scenarios. It is cool to see how their brains work and how different approaches impact their learning.

part of both Math and Science Departments is that I get to see the application of mathematics. Mathematics is the language of science. Science experiment results have to be quantified. Seventh grade girls coming in to the Science Fair are blown away by what is expected of them. By the time they finish, they are so proud of their work that includes spread sheets, graphs, data tables, and a cohesive paper with introduction, experimental procedure, results, data, conclusion, and bibliography. It’s manageable because it is broken into chunks over a six-month period. Our judges are impressed by the quality of the writing, the scientific language, and the attributions.

It’s an invaluable cross-curricular project developed with involvement from math, library, science, and technology teachers. I find that so exciting.

The more the girls practice, the more ingrained it becomes. They develop more mental space to understand a concept, ask more questions, and gain confidence. Freshmen don’t always recognize how much practice it takes to grasp and execute a concept with accuracy. As they gain confidence, they develop a curiosity and a belief they can do the math. Practice opens their minds to grasp concepts at a deeper level, and to become more serious about mathematics.

Game Changers MRS. COATES: When I arrived in the late ’90s, most girls took the two-year graduation requirement of a lab science and were done. Girls now are graduating with six science courses. They want it. They see it as beneficial and challenging.

That is most unusual for an all-girls’ school. Our progress stems particularly in our choice of faculty and the dedication they bring to their work. All come with strong backgrounds and strong enthusiasm for the subject. Our expectation of each faculty’s teaching is very high. When teachers need help or guidance, we are there to work with and support them as they move forward. Each teacher is comfortable in the way he and she strategizes and teaches the particular age group and the content. We share among ourselves, observe classes, and debrief to improve our methods.

MRS. TYLER: Our collaboration of ideas and ap-

proaches can be surprising. We learn different ways to teach from each other and the benefits of presenting topics with a different angle. Each of us shares the same goal, to build a student’s foundation. The girls know they can come to any one of us for help.

Then they share their learning with a classmate.

DR. TAM: When teachers prepare well, students rise

to our high expectations of them. We want our girls to come to a high standard by giving them our expectations of their work and providing them with encouragement and methodology.

MRS. TYLER: Faculty take advantage of outside

learning, both in the summer and through the year, with programs, conferences, and lectures offered by other schools, universities, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and NAIS. DR. TAM: I encourage faculty to educate themselves

to expand their education and knowledge. With AP Summer Institutes, and classes and workshops built around inquiry learning, we learn how much help to give, when to pull back, and how to incorporate inquiry learning into units of study.

MRS. TYLER: Curriculum is guided through the inqui-

ry method. The girls become vested in the development of an academic topic through questioning. This builds greater curiosity.

“What if ?”

MRS. COATES: Girls need to explore and say, “What

if?” That’s what makes science so exciting. With the Science Fair, girls execute their own work. For many, it is the first time they have to handle the uncertainty of open-ended questions. The Science Fair process is earth-shattering in the barriers it breaks down.

Everyone has an opportunity to shine.

It is fascinating to see the girls’ interest. They learn and come to understand the limits of their experimentation. We see their excitement when they come back from a Science Fair or undertake Independent Research in the Upper School. Most often this research is a continuation of a Middle School project. One such student who built on her previous

year’s work throughout her high school years is a chemical engineering major at Georgia Tech. Others have gone on to earn advanced degrees across STEM fields. We are seeing that the research the girls do catches their interest. They develop a depth of clarity of scientific and mathematical thought based on what we expose them to.

Real science is inquiry, opened-ended experimentation, analysis of results and experimental errors, and graphical display. The College Board is revamping the AP curricula in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry with less memorization and more open-ended experiments expected of students. Our Science Fair, now in its 21st consecutive year, was ahead of this wave.

DR. TAM: The Science Fair is a great experience. It is

where 21st century skills come to play. Girls have gone on in great numbers to compete and win awards at State Science Fairs. I am impressed with what the girls do and with their poise, and with the way our teachers work together in a spirit of cooperation and sharing.

Team work is so important and appreciated.

Connecting Concepts MS. ROCKENSIES: It is interesting in the education world to watch how a pendulum swings with trends.

Students need skills, problem solving, and teachers who love the subject and can be open to presenting topics in a variety of ways so they are understood.

DR. TAM: Whether in history or chemistry, it is a

skill to use the evidence to connect the concepts and flesh out predictions. This skill base will help the girls in decision-making throughout their lives.

We talk so much about being concrete and handson, especially in Middle School, or in physics and engineering. For life science, biology, and chemistry the concepts are more abstract. It is important to develop the skills to think in an abstract way. In problem solving, we ask a ton of questions to build the concept. Questions stem from what they have learned. We want them to look at a problem, focus on strategies of approach, analyze data, take what they have learned out of the classroom and perform in the outside world. We want to excite them to

fields of engineering, physical science, research, and applied mathematics.

We have come a long way in our progress in the science field, especially in medical fields and biological research. With the changes and achievements made in the engineering field, we look to extend engineering and robotics programs with coherence in the Upper School.

We believe strongly in building solid foundations.

MRS. COATES: It is so gratifying see girls who came in

struggling, tell us how much they love fractions and decimals, or hands-on lab experiments, robotics, and STEM field trips. They are animated with the process and want to do more of it.

Stronger Together MRS. TYLER: Research on college students who excel in STEM fields points to key features that are present here: the mentoring; the methodical, foundational support; and the encouragement the girls receive.

We create a pedagogical balance to build student learning, ideas, and confidence, and are attentive to the depth and breadth of learning. Our offices are so comfortable for the girls to come in for support.

Our goal is to bring everyone to the highest level. It’s active learning, and it works.

By focusing on skill development, on the understanding of concepts, and on application to the real world, the girls take something they have never seen before, and apply the skills we have taught them to the problem. We are creating life-time problem-solvers for our world. It is what our world needs. NCDS

See the World Beyond The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the US government.

Since 1946, Fulbright awardees have embarked on year-long immersion programs in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere as teachers, researchers, and cultural ambassadors. Few people experience such an opportunity. The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program places Fulbrighters in classrooms in developing countries, often in remote parts of the world, such as a secluded fishing village in Perak, Malaysia, which Michaela Gaziano ’09 called “home” for the year 2014.

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I was getting into by accepting

taken by the hand and taught the names and history of the gods in their temples and blessed in their religious traditions. I witnessed the seriousness of their rituals and the exotically colorful religious dress and parades and partook in feasts that accompanied celebrations. Although language was a barrier, my students conveyed their excitement at my presence at family celebrations. In the midst of sensory overload, my students became my guides and my liaisons. The more they educated me to their culture, the more inclined they were to listen to me in the classroom.

Cultural Challenges My year was challenging, but I came to look on each struggle as a lesson in disguise. My Malaysian community rallied around me, treating me as an honored guest, even helping me when my broken down car died on the roads.

The schools in Malaysia are divided into Bands 1-6, with six being the worst performing. SMK Dato Idris was designated as a six. Within each school, classes are given a 1-8 rating, with the 8-ranked classes chronically neglected. Learning is rote recitation

and copying. Often teachers wouldn’t show up to an 8-rated class. Students left, unable to see the value of an education when they had opportunities to earn money as a mechanic, a fisherman, or a waitress.

I thought about what worked for me at Newton Country Day. Standing before my low performing Malaysian students, I was humbled to realize the time and effort my teachers put in to inform me. It was up to me to become that teacher – engaging my students, making learning fun, building trust, and letting them know they can’t mess around in my class!

My official classes were English grammar and vocabulary, but I always had a translating dictionary at my fingertips. Often I would write out my lessons in English and then ask my Malaysian co-workers to help me to translate them to the indigenous language as a backup.

Our role as cultural ambassadors through Fulbright allowed me to diversify my lessons. To that end I conducted classes on ideas about global economy, the Bill of Rights, the environment, geography, and always, “Confidence.” My students were incredibly shy and terrified to speak up in class. This was especially true of the girls. One day there was a boys-only assembly, so I had an opportunity for a

class of only girls. I talked about confidence; I told them that once I had been just as shy as they were. I talked about my years at Newton Country Day and how my teachers taught me the importance of using my voice and showcasing my gifts. They saw I once was like them, and it created a bond between us.

My classroom was very diverse, yet their view of America is “white, blonde, and blue-eyed.” I spoke of my friends who didn’t meet that stereotype, about the amalgamation of cultures in the US, and of American icons with whom they were familiar, such as Obama and Beyoncé. They were definitely skeptical, so I used a lot of visual tools to show them what America is truly like.

I also tried to incorporate societal issues into my lessons. One of the most obvious problems facing my community in Perak, and that part of the world in general, is the tremendous pollution. Trash is everywhere; smog is so dense that schools are occasionally shut down as there is no visibility; and open burning is prevalent. There isn’t an understanding of safe-keeping the environment. Having taken advantage of scuba diving along the coral reefs off the peninsula, I developed a hands-on lesson to educate my students to environmental repercussions. After showing them pictures of beautiful coral reefs that are prevalent in that part of the world, I filled a clear vase with clean water and added colorful plastic fish.

Then I shared with them pictures depicting devastating effects of pollution along the reefs. One by one, students added broken egg shells, oil, and trash to the vase. The once pristine water disgusted them. I asked them to try to clean it. They didn’t know where to start. It was meant to educate them that once you pollute, it’s hard to retrace your steps and return those beautiful reefs to what they once were.

Through an entrepreneur club, I taught my students basic business and leadership skills. I formed a Global Cultures Club to teach geography through slideshows, preparing ethnic foods, and language skills. When I held a trivia competition of American facts, I called on the US Embassy to help with tokens to use as prizes. Boxes of little American flags arrived that delighted my students. I tried to help my students see the world beyond their town.

One of my last projects was to paint a mural in the school’s main hallway. I asked students to paint the continents accurately, as most students at SMK Dato Idris could not correctly identify the continents. I supervised, but my students took the reins, and their creativity was astounding. They painted a massive and colorful mural that depicts three students envisioning the world and the words, “The future of the earth is in your hands.” It made me wish I had spent my year exclusively focused on projects that would spark student interest and allow them to display their curiosity.

My Fulbright year taught me that you can find your place no matter where in the world you go, and it gave me a greater appreciation of cultural diversity and the bonds of community. It was an incredible experience to be able to use the knowledge I gained as a high school student at Newton Country Day. It made me realize how difficult it is to excite students to learning, and how important teachers are to the development of a young mind. Active Engagement Dr. Daniel McGlathery, Latin teacher and head faculty advisor of Model UN for 14 years, was invited, as one of four international panelists, to address the 400 faculty who accompanied 3,000 student delegates to this year’s Harvard Model United Nations Conference. He highlighted the challenges, strategies, and rewards of building and advising a successful Model UN team at an all-girls’ school. Excerpts follow.

advisors who can transmit their avid interest in international affairs to students, and who complement each other with their strengths. The same team of three faculty advisors has worked with our Model UN for 11 consecutive years.

Dr. Dana Comi has been instrumental in developing the Honors History program. She has traveled with students to China and lends her historical expertise and emphasis on the decorum of our delegates.

Ms. Karen Naylor-Riobueno is innovative in terms of her knowledge of technology and international connections. She has known members of the Thai royal family and belongs to a grassroots organization of professionals dedicated to preserving democracy in Venezuela. These connections proved invaluable in our representing Thailand and Venezuela at HMUN this year. I come from a multicultural family with international interests.

Given increasing global interdependency, it is important to introduce students to current events and help them develop the skills to tackle the world’s problems. It is rewarding that young women from our program go on to major in international relations and to pursue careers in international diplomacy. Some graduates continue Model UN involvement at such schools as Harvard and the University of Chicago. Some engage in activities inspired, in part, by their MUN experiences. One who plans a career in public health went to Samoa to study the effectiveness and availability of mental health services there. Another became involved in the Student Health and Welfare Organization in Cape Town, South Africa. Participation in MUN was formative in terms of an alumna winning a Fulbright Scholarship to Malaysia. The notion that Model UN

can change your life is a powerful recruiting tool.

Our school has won 18 college level conference awards in the past seven years, including 15 awards on crisis committees and specialized agencies. In addition to attending HMUN every year, we have attended the Yale, Boston, and Dartmouth MUN Conferences.

Projecting a Presence Student leaders take an active role in preparing younger students for participation in conferences.

Position papers are a prerequisite for attending conferences, and we work with the girls on honing their arguments. Delegates are evaluated on the basis of writing and public speaking skills, reliability, and seniority to determine which students attend MUN conferences and who gets priority in assignments.

We have averaged four or five acceptances to special application committees at the HMUN Conference, per year, for the past eight years.

Our students show how female delegates might advocate for gender equity and the education of women to enhance human rights and prosperity throughout the world. One delegate comments: “Going to an all-girls’ school gives me the confidence to address global issues regarding women. Model UN gives me further insight into these topics and shows me effective ways of handling and addressing them.”

I teach at a school whose mission and commitment to international service accord with the aims of the United Nations. A Sacred Heart education develops a deep respect for intellectual values, a social awareness that impels students to action, and an acknowledgement of the importance of building community. Our curriculum piques students’ interest in Model UN and has won awards for integration of Asian history into the curriculum. It offers strong programs in Chinese, French, Latin, and Spanish. A current events course interests students in countries that figure prominently in current affairs and the global economy. Ultimately, this active engagement with international affairs is much more rewarding than winning awards at conferences. NCDS

Life-Long Learners Latin teacher, Ms. Skye Shirley, was in Rome in July to teach at the Methodological Seminar for Ancient Language Teachers at the Universitá Pontificia della Santa Croce. Earlier, she presented “Active Latin for Any Text” at the spring Classical Association of Massachusetts (CAM) annual conference. Spoken Latin is a topic Ms. Shirley has been passionately invested in since 2012, when she attended Conventiculum Bostoniense, a spoken Latin immersion program offered by the University of Massachusetts.

WHEN I SPOKE LATIN for the first time and saw how

dramatically spoken Latin deepened my intuitive sense of the language structure, and improved reading speed and comprehension, I dedicated myself to developing spoken Latin lessons for students.

Latin no longer has a population of native speakers. However, I have learned from the Conventiculum and from my readings in current second language acquisition research that the lack of such a population does not intrinsically change the ways our brains learn a second language.

My presentation at CAM, “Active Latin for Any Text,” was both practical and philosophical. It provides classicists with tools for textbook adaptations and recommendations for vocabulary acquisition activities, conversational work, composition exercises, and story-telling, so that students receive meaningful input and produce Latin of high quality. All lessons are backed by the most recent research into second language acquisition.

I was delighted to have the opportunity to teach professional development seminars for ancient language teachers in Rome. I shared classroom games which use hand gestures for vocabulary acquisition, providing an engaging way to stay within the language without switching to English. Participants practiced Latin question-and-answer strategies for discussing classical texts. Thus, translation is used, not as a method of obtaining comprehension, but as a rewarding extension activity after the reader fully understands the text.

There are many reasons why the spoken method is gathering momentum. Ancient texts include cultural and historical messages which can seem

foreign to modern readers. Some spoken proficiency helps students see themselves as inside the language and therefore inside the culture of Ancient Rome.

Furthermore, the spoken method assists auditory learners who frequently can struggle in a visuallydominated language.

The immersion methodology is empowering.

It provides the girls an enhanced understanding of the Latin language and appreciation of ancient Roman culture. It also improves my own Latinitas – my quality and eloquence of Latin. I see myself as a life-long learner and language coach, and am energized by the awareness that I am, like my students, beginning to feel a new sense of belonging inside the language and culture. Insight Beyond Books Mandarin Chinese is one of the UN’s six official languages. According to the Foreign Service Institute, it takes a native English speaker about 575 class hours to become proficient in a language closely related to English. In contrast, it requires the same speaker 2,200 hours to master Mandarin. Catherine McNally ’15 learned more at Dunkin’ Donuts than how to make the coffee. Proficient in Mandarin, she learned first-hand the challenges confronting immigrants.

IT IS JUST BEFORE SIX o’clock in the morning on a

late-summer Sunday. Outside, it’s dark and now chilly with the approach of fall, making the earlymorning start a little more difficult than it was a few weeks ago. Few people are on the street, and even fewer are at the local Dunkin’ Donuts as I walk in.

Looking around at the tired faces of my co-workers, I put on my apron and begin going through the early morning routines: brewing coffee, filling dairy dispensers, restocking the donut shelf, and making other preparations for the day.

This morning I am working with Amy, who has become my closest friend here. A woman in her fifties, she moved here from Taiwan a few years ago. Amy and I bonded over the summer, a process aided by my passion for the Chinese language. After a few weeks of working together, Amy and I began to speak only in Chinese. Our conversation today is neither cheerful nor unprecedented. Once again, Amy expresses frustration with her circumstances.

Although the subject is a sensitive one, we are able to speak freely and safely since we are using a language no one else here understands. On the weekdays she is never assigned any hours to work, she explains, but on Sundays she is given a nine-hour shift, leaving her just below ten hours, and thus with only one fifteen-minute break for the entire day. I commiserate with Amy, not only because she’s my

friend, but also because I know how hard she works to support herself, despite the apparent lack of appreciation for her efforts.

The only teenager on a staff of about 40 employees, I have come to learn over the summer that Amy is not the only one on the staff facing challenges.

Many of my co-workers, I now see, sustain themselves only with great difficulty and effort. Some, like Amy, are immigrants; about half have second jobs; more than half have a family to support in addition to themselves; and almost all have been working here for more than one year without a raise or promotion.

To a high school student living at home and just entering the work force, a near-minimum wage seems like plenty; even a high school student can perceive, however, that to someone with a child to support and bills to pay, that wage must not seem like much, or even close to enough.

The summer before senior year, I hoped to obtain some work experience as well as some income; what I actually acquired, however, is much greater.

Working alongside adults employed in the fast food industry, I have made friendships and come to identify with people I did not previously have the opportunity to know. I have gained an insight into their circumstances beyond which books or media coverage alone might provide.

To customers, the concerns and struggles of many of my co-workers may not be readily apparent; the rights of fast food workers in America are not as glamorous as other issues, leaving them with few advocates and little time or opportunity to make a case for themselves. This experience, for me, has marked transition to adulthood and has conferred a responsibility. As I go forward, I always will remember the circumstances of my co-workers and act to support them, as well as programs and policies that ensure the decent quality [of life] deserved by all. NCDS

The SPLENDOR of Seville SEVILLE CAST ITS SPELL over fifty-seven Upper School

girls and accompanying faculty who traveled to the city of “Don Quixote” and “Carmen” to perform in concert. Arriving in southeastern Spain, the group absorbed the Mudéjar architecture of the 14th century Alcázar, the oldest European royal palace still in use, and graced the 17th century Iglesia Colegial del Divino Salvador with the beauty of song. The church was built on a site that has preserved elements of a ninth century great mosque and existent traces of a Roman forum and the Visigoth era.

Standing before the main altar, an elaborate work of Baroque art, the Chorale and Schola Cantorum, directed by Mr. John Sullivan, opened their concert with three movements from Mozart’s “Mass in D Major.” The Schola performed an eclectic mix of music, genres from the madrigal to a piece

by Leonard Bernstein. The performance closed with contemporary compositions sung by the Chorale: the “Prayer of St. Francis,” “Brazilian Psalm,” and “Tu Rex Gloriae.”

As part of their tour, the girls explored artistic treasures that herald a historic paradox of 1,200 years of triumphs, conquests, and peaceful co-existence of Moorish, Christian, Jewish, and gypsy cultures. On a trip to Granada they visited the Alhambra Palace and Palacio de Generalife, a ninth century citadel with extensive Persian gardens. In Córdoba, they strolled the medieval network of old neighborhood squares and toured the massive Mezquita. The former mosque, now a cathedral, gives tribute to the passage of Spain’s diverse cultural heritage.

In Madrid, the girls participated in a Sacred Heart exchange concert at Colegio del Sagrado Corazón de Rosales. Newton Country Day singers performed selections from their Seville concert, listened to pieces presented by their hosts, and shared a Goûter of chocolates and churros. To close their FALL 2015

tour, they enjoyed the Prado Museum and Royal Palace, an Athlético Madrid professional football (soccer) game, and Flamenco music and dance performances.

“The trip to Spain was one of the best experiences of my life,” says D’Jonita Cottrell ’15. “Singing in the middle of the streets in Sevilla is a memory I will cherish forever. I will never forget this trip or the wonderful students and faculty whom I had the privilege of taking it with.” NCDS

“IT WAS THE BEST FOUR WEEKS OF MY ENTIRE LIFE!” says Meghan Blake ’17, one of a record 24 sophomores and juniors who participated in the spring Sacred Heart Exchange program.

The girls were hosted by Sacred Heart families in 14 cities throughout Australia, Austria, Chile, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, and the US. The International Exchange offered inaugural programs at Institution de la Croix in Bondues, France and at Colegio Santa Maria del Valle in Seville, Spain. This year’s exchange also presented a second opportunity to study at the International School of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo.

New Perspectives Vienna Roche ’17 had traveled to Seville with her family a few years ago. It was a city she wanted to revisit. “Traveling by myself to Seville, with multiple flight connections, taught me independence. Seville is old, beautiful, and welcoming,” says the third year Spanish student. “To be immersed in the school community and to fully explore Seville, knowledge of Spanish is essential.

“An exchange builds an appreciation of a culture and its heritage. The life-style of the people is very different. I learned how to take the Metro, to order food, and to de-bone and de-vein fish at the dinner table.

Visiting Córdoba with my host sister and her mother, who grew up in Córdoba, I saw the neighborhoods and the mosque-cathedral Mezquita through their eyes.” Vienna had a special opportunity to bring her host family to the concert performed by the Newton Country Day Chorale on tour in Seville.

There are a plethora of reasons students select particular cities for a Sacred Heart exchange. Hana Ryan ’17 brought a different rationale to her choice of Vienna, Austria. Her AP European History class with Mr. Charles Berman directed her decision.

Having just studied the Russian Revolution, World War I, and the ensuing years, she wanted to interact with people whose families lived this history.

history classmates were immersed in the after effects of World War II. Their perspectives on the wars and the rebuilding years enabled her to grasp European history through a different lens.

Classes were held in German, and her host mother, a native of Beijing, spoke Chinese and German. Unfamiliar with the languages, Hana quickly absorbed German words, phrases, and inflections, but not ones most travelers would expect. She learned terms Austrians use to describe historical events, how to hold her own on the Danube as a pairs rower with the school’s crew team, when to sprint and intercept with the competitive frisbee team, and how to travel independently via Vienna’s rail system.

Experiences make Memories In the capital city of Santiago, Chile, Nicola Henderson ’16 and her host sister visited the seaport city of Valparaiso and Nobel prize-winning poet-diplomat Pablo Neruda’s home. Outside of classes at Sagrado Corazón, Nicola was engaged in a service day at a childcare center and took a religious hike to the peak of Cerro San Cristóbal.

Maddie Tango ’17 was hosted at the Beechwood School of the Sacred Heart in Tunbridge Wells, England, by a boarding student from Hong Kong. Together, they explored London, and when not in classes where she also witnessed English as it TRÈS B IEN M A GA Z IN E

is taught to foreign boarding students, she brought people together by starting soccer games. “It was the first time I traveled abroad by myself and everyone made me feel so welcome,” she says.

Kelsey Sweeney, who traveled to Melbourne, Australia, and Camelia Garcia-Marxuach who traveled to Madrid, Spain, say that without the “crutch” of family and friends at home, they created closer relationships with their foreign classmates and liked relying on themselves to make the exchange an educational and exciting experience. Camelia and her host sister also met the Newton Country Day Chorale on tour in Madrid.

One Day, 3 Meals, 3 Countries Meghan Blake ’17 traveled to Barcelona to improve her Spanish language skills. At Sagrat Cor, she attended classes and worked with three-year old students in their native Catalan language. As exciting as it was to experience the city, spending Palm Sunday in her host family’s coastal village was a cultural festival. Days later, she exchanged her flip flops for ski boots when the family skied the Pyrenees in Andorra. “We returned to Barcelona by way of France,” she says. “It was so neat to travel and dine in three countries in one day.”

Asked what she’d suggest to students thinking about a future international exchange, Meghan responds, “When on exchange, you are cut off from

your world at home. You will meet so many interesting people who will make your experience great.

Adjust and go with the flow.”

“Knowledge is Sweet and Powerful” DR. NANNERL O. KEOHANE, grandmother of Catherine Williamson ’15, and President of Wellesley College and of Duke University for a combined 24 years, addressed the Class of 2015. Currently, Dr. Keohane is the Laurence S. Rockefeller Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Affairs in the Woodrow Wilson School and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University.

Dr. Keohane told the graduates of her transition from a public high school in Arkansas to Wellesley College.

She was the first graduate from her school to attend a college in New England and roomed with “a cheerful New Englander who had never been west of the Hudson River.” Following graduation, she was a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University and later earned a Ph.D. in political science from Yale University.

“Don’t regard college as a way station along the road to somewhere else [or] you will miss a truly exceptional opportunity of a lifetime.

Take advantage of it; plumb the depths of what it has to offer. Get out of your comfort zone to become friends with classmates who are not like you; learn from their diverse backgrounds and experiences.

“Take time to explore fields you have never heard of. Pursue unexpected paths. Explore other parts of the university: athletics, clubs, the arts, and volunteer societies. Go for long walks. Step inside the college chapel to meditate, pray, or just be there quietly, admiring the sunlight coming through a stained glass window, focusing yourself.

“The main reason for going to college is to learn, to stretch your mind, to discipline yourself. There will be times when you need to focus carefully, intensely, quietly, and at length, on one particular text or painting or lab experiment or piece of music.

If you multi-task, you will miss the point. Single-mindedness [is] a valuable skill. One of my predecessors as President of Wellesley, Alice Freeman Palmer, said, ‘We go to college to know, assured that knowledge is sweet and powerful; that it emancipates the mind and makes us citizens of the world.’

“And a bit of advice about becoming a better leader while you are on campus,” continued Dr. Keohane, drawing on her studies of leadership FALL 2015

among undergraduates at Princeton. “At the outset our committee [took] for granted that the jobs that mattered are the big visible ones at the top. We were disturbed that only one woman had been president of the student body at Princeton from 2000 until 2012. If you want a top position, don’t let anyone persuade you that you shouldn’t try for it.

“College is a great place to improve your skills as a leader; take advantage of becoming a fine leader, either in a big visible job that gives you lots of scope to make changes for the better, or in a less visible post pursuing a cause you really care about.

“You had the exceptional opportunity to be in a community of strong, supportive women and girls for several years. In college, you will need to carve out your own community. It will be up to you to chart your path, choose your cause, and stretch your muscles and your mind to make a difference for good. In this way, you will be prepared to make a difference for good in the world you will face after your next big Commencement!

“I am confident that each of you will find your path to this goal. I wish you the best as you embark on this exciting journey. Keep as a compass your awareness of what really matters to you. Godspeed.”

I am honored and humbled to represent the Class of 2015. The mission of our school is to educate girls to courage and confidence. The most valuable gift a girl can be given is the courage and confidence to be herself. Rooted in the principles of Sacred Heart education, supported by our families and teachers, and carried by the strength of the friendships we made here, we can stand resolutely against trials that lie ahead.

Through our courage to tell a friend what she means to us and how she inspires us, and to thank her for being herself, we gave each other confidence.

We have been given the tools to enter the world of adulthood elegantly and successfully, with courage and confidence, with poise and grace. Thank you to our parents, for the sacrifices you made for your daughter to have an extraordinary education. Thank you, Class of 2015. Our time at Newton Country Day has been integral to the women we have become. Although it can be difficult to leave behind a place that holds so many memories and so much joy, the School has

Campus Highlights NATIONAL MERIT and AP SCHOLARS Nine seniors are distinguished as National Merit Commended Scholars. They place in the top 2.5 percent of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMS Qualifying Test in their junior year.

Emily Martland ’15, Christina Neckermann ’15, Christina Smith ’15, Samantha Tyler ’15, and Catherine Williamson ’15 are National Advanced Placement Scholars.

Christina Neckermann also earned an AP International Diploma. Twenty-three members of the Class of 2015 and one current senior qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. Eighteen recent graduates and fifteen current seniors qualified for AP Scholar with Honor and AP Scholar Awards.

SUPERIOR GENERAL VISIT In April, the US-Canada Province of the Society of the Sacred Heart hosted Supe-

rior General Kathleen Conan, RSCJ and General Council Member Catherine Lloyd, RSCJ during an official visit. Sisters Conan and Lloyd visited Sacred Heart schools and institutions in Missouri, California, Louisiana, New York, Massachusetts, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Every Superior General makes an official visit to the Society’s 41 provinces over the course of her eightyear term to access the life and vitality of each province. For Sister Conan, a former Provincial of the US Province, her visit to Newton Country Day was an opportunity to renew long-time friendships.

PIE in the SKY For ninth grade girls, the real meaning of Thanksgiving starts the Saturday before the holiday as they gather around flour dusted tables in the School’s dining room. Students, mothers, and faculty pair with Community

Servings each year to make and bake 50 apple pies for the “Pie in the Sky” sale. The proceeds of the fundraiser support Community Servings’ meals and nutrition programs for the critically ill. Among Boston’s top chefs from restaurants, hotels, bakeries, culinary institutes, and colleges, Newton Country Day is the only high school “Pie in the Sky” student baking team.

STATE SCIENCE FAIR AWARDS Newton Country Day celebrated its 20th Annual Science Fair. Winning projects moved on to Regional High School and Middle School Science Fairs and Regional winners were invited to the State Fairs. “PIRATES of PENZANCE” Middle School students enthusiastically brought Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operetta Pirates of Penzance to the theatre. Swashbuckling pirates, portentous British “Bobbies,” and endearing damsels with parasols lit up the stage with song and captivating choreography. The players, outfitted in dramatic costumes, topped with flamboyant flourishes of hats and floral wreaths, set out to spoof nineteenth century society standards.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The Parents’ Independent School Network,

Inc. presented Newton Country Day the 2015 Community Service Award. Service Committee co-chairs Caroline Freeman ’15 and Abigail Hayes ’15, and moderators, religion teacher Ms. Anne Theriault and Spanish teacher Mr. Stephen Ross, were recognized for the annual Easter Basket Project that supports girls in secure treatment facilities.

The Service Committee cultivates awareness among Upper School students of challenges facing girls whose circumstances, including abuse and poverty, have impacted their life path. Forty care packages, with books, music CDs, artistic journals, hand-made fleece blankets, yarn for crocheting, and body products, were created and delivered. At the Awards Ceremony, the seniors described the committee’s work with our Sacred Heart School in Uganda, relief projects for Nepal, Walk for Hunger, and the award-winning Easter Basket project.

EMBRACING CREATIVITY Student artists boldly develop their creative path throughout the school year and into the summer. Kelsey Sweeney ’17 takes weekly classes in oil painting and charcoal drawing at the Rosemarie Morelli Art Studio and School, and summer classes on still life in Chatham. Alexandra Heredia ’16 has studied Anatomy and Figure drawing, Introduction to Oil Painting, Mural Painting, and iPhone Photography as part of the Young Residency Program at Lesley. Newton News gifts with Common Art, a creative program for the homeless. Alexandra Kouroriez ’18 studied drawing and painting at The Putney School in VT and at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Carmen Esquivel ’19 was immersed in a summer Graphic Design program at Lesley University.

ASPIRING ENGINEER Yrvine Thelusma ’17 won an all-expensepaid trip to Washington, DC for the Transportation Youth Summit where she learned about college opportunities, core transportation development components, and coordination around national security events.

The Boston Chapter of Advancing Women in Transportation selects and sponsors only one student in the region to participate.

The conference inspires and guides young women toward a future in STEM studies and a possible career in the transportation industry.

This opportunity followed a visit to MA DOT where Yrvine and her Honors Chemistry classmates worked on simulators of three transportation systems and conversed with female engineers.

SCHOLASTIC ART and WRITING Seventeen student works of art and literary manuscripts won awards in the 2015 Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Competition.

More than 20,000 works were adjudicated.

Claire Picken ’17 and Sofia Batten ’18 won Silver Keys in Drawing/Illustration and Design categories, respectively. Five works in Design, Drawing/Illustration, and Mixed Media categories received Honorable Mention. Eight students received awards for their creative writing manuscripts in Science Fiction/Fantasy, Poetry, Flash Fiction, and Memoir categories.

“SEUSSICAL the MUSICAL” The Upper School presented “Seussical the Musical” that drew on an amalgamation of characters and scenes from the Dr. Seuss collection. The curtain opened with a small

boy observing a crooked, tall, red and white striped hat on wheels rolling across the floor.

With practiced prestidigitation, the boy (Madeline Levangie ’17) conjures up the Cat (D’Jonita Cottrell ’15) to cavort in the role of cunning host and narrator. The cast, including the Whos from Whoville and the Grinch (Hannah Maguire ’15), juggled multiple roles and quick changes of guises, as outrageous disasters take off with delightful whimsicality and infectious songs.

WINNING ESSAY Emma Kelly ’19 won first place in the Harvard Medical School sponsored “Reflection in Action: building healthy communities” essay contest. Nearly 300 students entered this year’s contest. Emma’s essay, titled “Saving Mom,” advocates for the need to make early screening for cancer more readily available in neighborhoods, and for the “vital need to educate people, no matter their zip code, the color of their skin, or their language, to make use of mobile mammography. My mother was lucky,” writes Emma, “Now we all need to work together to fight this disease.”

Athlete Highlights Female NEPSAC Athlete of the Year Sophia Sgroi ’15, co-captain of varsity field hockey and varsity lacrosse, was selected by the Boston Globe as the Female New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) Athlete of the Year.

One male and one female senior student-athlete from six MIAA districts, the City of Boston, and NEPSAC were honored as the best and brightest of the 2014-2015 high school sports year. This honor is a first for Newton Country Day. The two-sport Globe All-Scholastic was a four-year starter for both varsity sports in the Eastern Independent League (EIL). Playing defense for field hockey, the two-time EIL Player of the Year, All-New England, and team MVP helped lead her team to two successive league titles and the NEPSAC Class “C” Championships.

A midfielder on the lacrosse squad, Sophia is a four-time NEPSWLA All-Star and All-League Player. In her junior year, the team (10-1-1) finished second in the league. The team’s top scorer and point-getter, she posted a career 273 points. Tallying 62 draw controls in her senior season, she was voted EIL Player of the Year and team MVP.

National Letters of Intent Sophia Sgroi ’15, the Female NEPSAC Athlete of the Year, signed a National Letter of Intent with Davidson College Women’s Lacrosse in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Davidson’s eight-year head coach Kim Wayne comments, “Sophia is a complete package. She is strong, aggressive, fast, and will shock you when you least expect it.”

The NCDS varsity crew co-captain rowed to first place in the fall 2013 and 2014 N.E. High School Championship Regatta in the Women’s 4+division. Undefeated in the regular 2014 spring season, her boat won a bid to the US Rowing Youth National Championships with its silver medal race at the N.E. Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships.

At the Nationals, her boat placed 14th overall, 5th among Women’s Youth 4+ scholastic crews. Crusader director of rowing and head women’s coach Patrick Diggins comments that his new recruit’s “experience in an excellent high school program will help us continue to be more competitive in the Patriot League.”

USTA National Champion Grace Joyce ’18 and her Lake Forest, IL doubles partner won the Girls’ 16-U doubles title at the US Tennis Association Winter Nationals in Scottsdale, AZ. The doubles team began their Championship march at Round 64 and dominated each next flight as they worked their way to the Finals. They captured the January 2, 2015 Championship title with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. This is Grace’s third Gold Ball trophy in three years.

EIL Player of the Year Sally Lakis ’15 was a senior co-captain and an outside hitter on the first place 2014 EIL varsity volleyball team (12-4). “Playing full rotation, she displays a strong ability to guide her teammates toward more effective play. The best server on the team, she earned the most consistent record with the greatest number of aces over the season,” says Coach David Byron. In her combined junior and senior year seasons, the team posted a 26-3 EIL record and won consecutive bids to the NEPSAC Class “B” Championships. A two-time All-League Player, Sally shares Co-EIL Player of the Year honors with a Dana Hall athlete.

Athletics (Athlete Highlights cont’d) Alumnae Athletes in the News The College of the Holy Cross named Catherine Roy ’09 (HC’13) an assistant women’s rowing coach. “We’re excited to welcome Catherine back to Holy Cross as a member of the coaching staff,” says director of rowing Patrick Diggins.

“She brings her experience as a coach at Newton Country Day, her extensive rowing experience, and her incredibly competitive spirit to our team. She’ll have an immediate and significant impact on this year’s team.”

Catherine was a two-year assistant coach at NCDS. Rowing for Holy Cross, she was a four-year member of the varsity eight, earning 2013 first team All-New England honors and first team All-Patriot League accolades. Catherine qualified for the 2011 US women’s national team

Pre-Elite Camp and attended the 2010 US national team freshman camp. The chemistry major was named to the 2011 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and was a two-year member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy.

Holy Cross women’s rowing sophomore Maddy Supple ’13 earned Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete honors for which the student-athlete has to be at least a sophomore and have rowed in a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or raced in a regional conference event.

Maddy qualified for this honor athletically and academically with a 3.76 GPA as a Political Science major. She earned 2013 and 2014 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades and is a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy.

Maddy was a member of the second varsity eight that placed fourth at the

2015 Patriot League Championship. She was also a member of the varsity four that placed second in the Petite Final at the 2015 Eastern Sprints. Maddy was a four-year member of NCDS varsity crew and a senior co-captain.

Vanderbilt University Athletics reports that Margaret Fee ’14 “jumped right into the fray during her first collegiate lacrosse season. Inside Lacrosse Magazine recognized Margaret for a standout freshman season by naming her to the All-Rookie Team. A midfielder/defender, she played in 15 of 16 games. Margaret won seven draw controls and led all Vanderbilt freshmen with 24 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. She was one of four defenders and one of 20 freshmen to make the IL Women All-Rookie Team.” Playing for NCDS, Margaret was a four-year starter and three-time NEPSWLA All-Star and was named a 2014 AllAmerican for lacrosse.

CROSS COUNTRY Varsity Cross Country (15-0) swept to a second consecutive, undefeated season winning O’Connell Invitational, EIL, and New England Prep School Track Association D-III Championship trophies. Coach of the Year Maggie Fox worked the runners to peak at the Championships. The team tamed a fierce nor’easter Undefeated Varsity Cross Country.

to win the EIL trophy, five medals, and 15 personal bests. At the NEPSTA Championships, the tenacious varsity corps dominated Vermont’s mountainous terrain. In a field of 161, Co-Captains Abigail Hillerich ’15 and Anne Utzschneider ’15, Madeleine Tango ’17, and Keara and Kathleen Westover ’18 finished in the top 14 to be named All-New England. JV runners captured all five top slots. Middle School runners (7-0) sprinted past 19 school teams, and capped the season by winning the Roxbury Latin Jamboree, a meet with 88 girls.

SOCCER Varsity Soccer (8-7) closed the season in the top four of the EIL. The girls were defined as a passing team, a quality that showcased consistency under pressure.

JV (6-4-3) posted a 12th consecutive winning season, allowing only four goalsagainst. Relentless in pursuit of a win, the squad grew in offensive focus and decisive action to defend the ball. JV (8-4) locked up two three-game winning streaks. One victory was clinched in a thrilling triple overtime. Masterful team efforts and deft ball movement, shot selection, and clock control sealed big season wins. Middle School “A” (10-8) and “B” (9-5) players, recognized for their indomitable spirit and contagious enthusiasm, combined to outscore opponents by 165 season points.

FIELD HOCKEY Varsity Field Hockey (11-3-1) won a third EIL Championship in five seasons.

Showcasing exceptional passing and dominating control, the players posted 10 shut-outs and were recognized across the league as top field athletes. Seeded third in the NEPSAC Class C Quarterfinals, the team lost 1-0 to Proctor. Six players earned All-League honors and Co-Captain Sophia Sgroi ’15 was named All-New England and EIL Player of the Year. The JV (10-2) squad opened the season with a loss, then roared to an undefeated EIL season. The defense held opponents to only four goals and the offense pummeled the nets for 36 goals.

Middle School “A” approached each game as a well-oiled team with a mission to grow as individual athletes. “B” players honed their offensive and defensive execution, particularly on the corners.

VOLLEYBALL Varsity Volleyball (12-4) was the EIL Champion and Co-Captain Sally Lakis ’15 was voted Co-EIL Player of the Year.

The team posted eight three-match sweeps. In one match, the resilient Falcons, down 2-0, rebounded with hard fought (27-25, 25-21) matches and a triumphant (15-4) final match. Six players took All-League honors. The team won a second consecutive bid to the NEPSAC Class “B” Tournament. An undefeated JV (17-0) team took thirteen games

DANCE Varsity Dance won more than ten awards across three New England competitions.

Co-Captain Molly Barrow ’16, the league’s top goalie, put out star-studded performances, stopping 403 of 428 shots for a .942 save percentage. With strong offensive and defensive strategies, the team dominated the ice in six games and overall scored 32 more goals than the opponents.

The young and relentless team has four All-League honorees. Coach Sydney Morgan, a Wesleyan University NESCAC All-Academic, was voted EIL Coach of the Year. Middle School finished the season with goalie Averill McCorkle ’21 posting 105 saves.

CREW With ice still on the Charles during the first leg of practice, Varsity Crew worked to win a third consecutive berth in the May NEIRA Girls 4+ Championships on Lake Quinsigamond. Following initial Championship heats, First and Second Varsity qualified for the Grand Finals, finishing 5th and 3rd, respectively. Facing rigorous 28

competition against seasoned rowers, JV finished first in two regattas and placed overall second in a regatta in CT. GOLF Varsity Golf (4-3) closed its season playing in the 30th annual N.E. Pippy O’Connor Independent School Girls Golf Tournament at Agawam Hunt and Golf Club. In the 9-Hole Division, Patrice Power ’17 tied for second and Nicole Goldman ’16 placed sixth among 54 golfers.

LACROSSE Varsity Lacrosse (5-5-1) Co-Captain Sophia Sgroi ’15, the Female NEPSAC Athlete of the Year, and Charlotte Wynn ’16 were named NEPSWLA All-Stars.

Seven seniors, three of whom played varsity all four years, led the team to a winning EIL season. Four players received All-League honors. JV (7-3) enjoyed an outstanding league season, opening with a five-game winning streak where the team scored 57 goals and held opponents to 27. After two initial losses, Middle School “A” (8-2-1) dominated the season with an 8-game winning streak, scoring twice as many goals as the opponents. Thirty-two “B” players, some who never had cradled a ball, progressed each week in stick handling skills to close the season as a team force.

SAILING Anchored by three four-year sailors, Varsity Sailing’s Mercury and 420 fleets raced against as many as 14 public, private, and co-ed schools in “C” Division. Practicing daily under different wind flags and temperatures that varied along a 40-degree range, NCDS boats earned top five finishes across the six regular season regattas. The season closed with the MA Bay League Championships.

SOFTBALL A shortened season due to two-feet of snow still on the ground in April did not daunt the teams. Freshmen added the sparkplug to a tenacious Varsity Softball (7-4) squad that took four double-digit wins from EIL competition. Posting an overall batting average of .374, the players tallied 101 regular season runs and logged 28 stolen bases. Powerful pitching, impressive field plays, rocket line drives, mammoth homeruns, and shoestring catches catapulted the team to the EIL softball “A” pool. Four players earned All-League honors. Middle School (7-1-1) players notched twice as many trips across the plate as they allowed their opponents. The team posted an overall .392 batting average, and five hurlers combined for 98 strikeouts.

TENNIS Varsity Tennis (7-5) secured the team’s third consecutive invitation to the NEPSAC Girls Tennis Championships.

Singles players collectively won 20 of 34 regular season sets, and Varsity Tennis: Fay Green ’17. doubles teams clinched two-thirds of their regular season sets. Consistent and aggressive, the team swept four opponents. A dynamic JV (6-2) posted two commanding 5-0 matches. Singles players took 16 of 26 sets, and doubles teams won 8 of 13 season sets. Middle School (5-4) consistently worked to a high level of skill and ability and posted one shut-out.

Festivities commenced with a Jubilee Tea for the Class of 1965 and members of Jubilee Classes going back to 1950. Reunion was a family event for four sets of sisters and two sets of cousins.

Rev. Thomas Rafferty celebrated the Reunion liturgy, alumnae across the decades gave the readings, and the Middle School Cantilare sang. In his homily, Father Rafferty asked alumnae to reflect on their relationships with each other “with excitement, wonder, and awe.” During the Reunion reception, alumnae toured the school and caught up with each other on terraces, posed for class pictures, and enjoyed a buffet dinner in the gym where Sister Rogers thanked them for the many ways they contribute to the excellence of the School.

New Trustees JILL (BRAGA) HAYES P’15’16 was Pres-

ident and owner of Joseph J. Braga, Inc., a candy and tobacco wholesale company, for 28 years. Jill has been involved with development and fundraising events for Blue Hills Trailside Museum, Forbes House Museum, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Women’s and Children’s Center, and the Massachusetts Hospital School. A graduate of Boston College, Jill earned an MBA from Boston University. Jill and John Hayes are parents of Jack, Matt, Abby ’15, and Callie ’17.

ROBERT IX P’15’18 is Managing Partner

at Crestwood Advisors, an investment and wealth management firm in Boston. He is a member of the CFA Institute and the Boston Security Analysts Society. Rob is a former Trustee for the Trinity-Pawling School and the McCaddin McQuirk Foundation, and former member of St. Paul Parish Council in Wellesley. Rob graduated from Kenyon College and earned an MBA from Case Western University. Rob and Kathy Ix are parents of Emily ’15, Robbie, Elizabeth ’18, and Sam.

October 2015 Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends, On behalf of Sister Rogers and the Board of Trustees, we thank you for your generosity and continued commitment to Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. The strength of the School is a tribute to the entire community.

We report with great pride that collectively alumnae, parents, and friends supported the School with more than $4 million in gifts as well as countless volunteer hours. Annual giving for 2014-2015 raised more than $1.4 million supporting financial aid, operating costs, faculty enrichment, and many other school programs that benefit the girls. More than 1,475 donors contributed to these fundraising efforts. We are truly blessed to have such a generous community.

The Senior Family Fund is a long standing tradition. In honoring their daughters’ years at Newton Country Day, senior families work together to raise funds for a specific purpose each year. This year’s senior families supported the School’s Retreat Program.

The Très Bien Auction transitioned to a mobile app this year allowing guests to enjoy the company of friends while bidding on auction items. Through the leadership of the co-chairs and the participation of so many enthusiastic volunteers, the School’s premier fundraising event generated $365,000.

The construction of the Athletic & Wellness Center is well underway. It will provide an environment in which the girls create balance in their lives for their personal health and well-being. The campaign continues to seek gifts and pledges towards the $20 million goal. To the many alumnae, parents, and friends who have contributed to this campaign, thank you. Frances Pierson O’Leary writes: “Our class was represented at our 65th Reunion by five of the remaining ten members, all of whom are Massachusetts residents for at least part of the year. Anne Ronan Kane winters in Florida. Others are in the Boston area, except for Kay MacLellan O’Keeffe who drove up and back from Osterville on the Cape for the event. Barbara Smith Hernberg, Maureen Malone Quine, and I also attended. I enjoyed phone conversations with Marcia Ronan and Neilie O’Dell, both of whom send warm wishes to the class. Our families reflect in many ways how life styles have changed in those 65 years. Kay has a new grandson. I have a grandson who will be married next year. Barbara and Maureen have great grandchildren. The biggest change in our own lives is that Kay, a nurse practitioner, reported cutting back her work from six days to five!

That made the rest of us feel like slackers! Kay tried to make us feel better by explaining that she keeps flexible hours because she co-owns the business.”

Betty Anne Reilly writes: “Our class treasures are our Newton memories. I remember with great fondness, Mother Wheeler, who inspired me to write an essay, ‘Unsung Heroes,’ which was awarded first prize in the National Vicariate Essay Contest. I went on to pursue a rewarding career in public relations. My current work is writing the bulletin and working with the GIFT program at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. I am grateful to all the Religious who shared their faith, knowledge, expertise, and vision so generously.”

1953 Maura O’Neil married Edward S. Stimspon III in 2014. Maura loves living in West Falmouth and is involved with Sacred Heart ladies who are “Cape Codders.” Lucille Saccone Giovino was on the planning committee for the 40th bi-annual AASH Conference.

1954 Rosemary Stuart Dwyer ’54 co-chaired the bi-annual National AASH Conference with

Toni Walsh Curry ’68. The event was held in Boston last April.

1958 Eve Barker Paton visited the school in fall 2014. This was her first visit to the US since the 1950s when her father, Sir William Barker, served as British Consul General to Boston. Eve attended Newton Country Day for two years, then Stone Ridge in Bethesda, before returning to graduate from Beechwood Sacred Heart School in County Kent, England. At Newton, she lived in Jamaica Plain and became an avid Red Sox fan.

Eve writes: “I am back in England after a wonderful and memorable trip to the States that I enjoy recounting with children and grandchildren. One highlight was my trip to Newton. I carry a warm glow from the welcome I received, and was so surprised to find myself in the all-school picture taken in the Sunken Garden in the 1950s. The happiest days of my childhood were spent at Newton Country Day. I visited my childhood home and was warmly welcomed by long-time owner Marilyn Martin Parker ’86, P’11’21. It 39

Class Notes was wonderful to speak to Betsy and Barbara Gannon after all these 60 years. As Betsy and I enjoyed coffee, we forgot our ages and became school girls again! Thank you so much for all you did to make it such a memorable event. This trip is a time I will treasure, and I welcome any Newton girls who visit England.” Betsy Gannon updates the Class: “I had an amazing experience last fall. I got a call and heard: ‘This is Eve Barker Paton, the English girl in school with you at Newton.

Don Burns and I had breakfast with her on her last morning here, and enjoyed the most amazing visit. We were exhausted and delighted at the end of it and must do better to email. Her host arranged a tour of Newton and that’s where she got my number! When Eve and her family were living in Boston, she drove with us to school. Last winter I celebrated my 75th birthday with Barbara, Mike, and cousins in Florida. Don and I walked the Nature Preserve in St. Pete every day. As Don’s memory diminishes, I tell him we are stuck together like feathers and honey. He is funny and witty and keeps me laughing. All is good. I picked up Class Notes again as this is doable and keeps me in touch with all of you. Brenda Sullivan Geishecker and Jack celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in Shelborne, VT in 2014. Their daughter arranged a Cooking Class for the whole family. They created an amazing meal with great fun. Brenda’s son, Drew, in CA, challenged her painting to step outside the box. Brenda created a large painting of the San Francisco Hills for Drew. It has all the iconic spots and famous people in small form. Jack and Brenda are active members in their Dedham parish church. Nonie McNeil Barclay struggled with pneumonia in June. Keep her in your prayers. Her humor is strong.

Her Aunt Fran Murphy ’35 celebrated her 97th birthday. Maggie Driscoll Callan and Merrill keep trucking and try to handle the aging process with ‘a modicum of grace.’

They make an annual summer trip to New England to visit family, friends, and her first roommates. In October they took a small ship along the Dalmatian coast on the Adriatic. Barbara Gannon Wilson and Mike attended the Wilson family reunion in June in West Virginia. Barbara says: ‘I enjoy being connected to Newton classmates via internet and visits! Mike and I enjoy good health and 40

regular exercise.’ Anna Ferrone reports: ‘My 6th grandchild celebrated his 1st birthday, while my oldest is a junior at Wesleyan in CT. His sister, Lucy, enters John Hopkins University as the Hodson Trust Scholarship winner for her high school volunteer work.

I love seeing my school mates throughout the year.’ Anna and her husband of two years, Struan, traveled to Provence in June.

Kitsy Cavanaugh Fogarty tells us: ‘I love my Darien, CT condo. Daughter Suzanne and her husband live in Providence, RI, where she is the head of the Lincoln School.

Justine and her husband are in Seattle, WA. Kathleen and family live close by me in New Canaan. She has a junior and a freshman in college, and a high school sophomore.

Son Richie, a lawyer, lives in Narragansett.’

1963 Linda Orlandella Chisholm recalls the days when grey suits and oxford shoes were the uniform of the day. Linda and Tom enjoy work and life with four children, three in MA and one in CT, and eight grandchildren.

Connie Murphy Hughes and Roger continue to live and work in Norwell, close to their two married daughters and the grandchildren. Connie’s youngest son Ted was married in September at St. Cecilia’s in Boston. All five grandchildren were in the wedding.

The tour included visits to the Mount of Olives, Pater Noster Church, Gethsemane, Ascension Church, and Mass at Lazarus’ tomb. Pat Solis wrote at Christmas that she loved seeing the picture of the Chapel.

1971 Joanne Jaxtimer was honored in May by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester with a 2015 New England Women’s Leadership Award. The annual Awards event celebrated the inspiration, leadership, and compassion Joannie provides as a role model for inner-city girls. Jennifer Corcoran ’09 was on the Awards Committee that selected Joannie as an honoree. Joannie is a Regional Executive and Co-Head of Global Philanthropy for BNY Mellon, and has received numerous and distinguished awards for her service and involvement in community organizations.

Rita Foley, a retired Fortune 500 Global President and committed leader in numerous organizations dedicated to improving health and well-being of individuals, published her third book Revolutionary Retirement, What’s Next for You? in October 2014. The book provides a framework for those approaching retirement to help design, plan, and enjoy retirement and has received great reviews as a practical and aspirational resource. It is full of information, stories, pragmatic exercises, and a rich appendix of resources that illuminate the choices, opportunities, and issues that can come with this great phase of life.

breed of optimists called Red Sox fans! I also traveled to Japan to produce an awardwinning documentary about a peace project on the bombing of Hiroshima. That story was told through the eyes of 40 ten-year-old kids from Greater Boston and 40 Japanese children who collaborated to perform a dance in Peace Park in Hiroshima on the anniversary of the bombing. In between, I had been married to a man I adored, and I survived five different cancers and a life-threatening heart disease, twice.

Fortunately, my personal struggles did not destroy my sense of humor or my ability to tell a good story; so I turned them into

a career! My business card says I am a Motivational Humorist. I took the wit and wisdom I learned from my lifetime of ups and downs and turned them into funny, motivational stories. Now, I stand on stage at conferences and national meetings telling funny stories that show the audience how to achieve happy and successful lives.”

1980 Vera Johnson works in the new Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building and directs a Boston Public Schools program that assesses incoming students, about 5,000 of them immigrant children.

Toni is a former AASH President, and she and Rosemary are past AASH Cor Unum Award recipients. Rita Foley ’71 was the Keynote speaker, with Joannie Jaxtimer ’71 introducing her. Rita’s address was titled “Giving Forward: Staying Relevant, Rewarded and Healthy.” Rhonda Raffi Meegan ’71, AASH Board member since 2013 and Eastern Regional Director, was on the Conference planning committee with Lucille Saccone Giovino ’53. At the Award ceremonies, Mimi O’Hagan (NC’51) was presented the Cor Unum Award, and Gail O’Donnell, RSCJ (NC’56) received The Woman of Conscience Award. Conference speakers included Barbara Gould Henry (NC’53) who presented her story about teaching Ruby Bridges in 1960 New Orleans, and Meghan Faria Martin ’00 who gave a personal reflection “Put Faith into Action.” Meghan later gave her compelling refection at an Upper School Chapel service. Class Notes “Riding Hungry” A front page story in the August 19 Boston Globe Food section by correspondent Lorne Bell features businesses of two alumnae. The article offers the “hottest fueling destinations” for cyclists pedaling along the 11-mile Minuteman Bikeway that connects Bedford to Cambridge. Prince Street Café & Bakery in Bedford, owned by pastry chef Dana Gallo Strayton ’83, was the first on the list of casual “bike-friendly” stops for riders with suggestions to satisfy breakfast, lunch, or sweet-treat cravings. Next on the list was the Bedford eatery B.Good, a local restaurant chain that offers produce and meats from New England family run farms. Allie Kroner ’05 is the coordinator and marketing point person for B.Good Foundation’s community partnerships.

Beatriz Pimentel, who has a Master of Arts from Middlebury College, received wonderful reviews for her latest book To Hunt a Windigo. Her 2015 teen fiction is a mystery wrapped in Native American folklore around the “windigo” monster, a human transformed into a gigantic and immortal carnivorous spirit that raised fearful curiosity among northern tribes, traders, missionaries, and settlers. Clara received an MA in Art & Public Policy from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and is the Director of Marketing & Events for the DUMBO Improvement District in Brooklyn.

She is responsible for developing creative programs in the neighborhood’s public spaces with and for the benefit of its residents, businesses, and cultural organizations. She also is an editor of Createquity, a research-backed investigation of the most important issues in the arts. Dan is an accomplished musician and producer. Joanna Strapp is a Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama graduate and professional actress working in CA on stage and in filmography. In 2015, she appeared in the TV Series “Modern Family” as Wife, and in “Agent Carter” as Gloria.

2003 Karen Tam, M.D. and Jonathan Wang were married in June at their home in Purchase,

2004 Brittany Borders joined the Admission Department at NCDS in 2014. She married Brandon Green in March 2015. Sandra Brown works for Boston Public Schools in enrollment in the new Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building located in Dudley Square.

2005 Juliana Clough graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

She is a resident in Pediatrics at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Captain Jacob Myers, U.S. Army, and Meaghan Doherty were married in September. Meaghan received a Masters in International Economics and Strategic Studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC. She is an analyst at a defense consultancy. Abigail Hueber coached NCDS Middle School Lacrosse.

Devlin Hughes started a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology at Columbia University Teachers College and works in the college’s Office of Student Affairs. Allie Kroner is the Community Development Director of the Boston-based B.Good Family Foundation, a restaurant group that prioritizes locally sourced and organic food as well as sustainable community involvement.

She serves as coordinator for community partnerships and as the marketing point person for franchisees. Allie graduated from NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service with a Master’s in Public Administration. Brynne Mancuso is the Senior Director of Development of One Goal in Chicago. Julie McDermott is a nurse in the Cardiac ICU at Boston Children’s Hospital. Jane Mostue married Daniel McGeeney in July with Devlin Hughes and Elizabeth Power Rucci as bridesmaids.

Avery Rizio writes: “I received my Ph.D in Psychology, with a specialization in Cognitive Neuroscience. As a post-doctoral research associate at the Center for Language Sciences at Penn State, I study neural systems that support language processing in older adults.” Jillian Rothwell Wishman is an account executive at Bay State Milling Company in Quincy.

Bernadette Buchanan graduated from the Wharton School with an MBA in May. Sarah Curran married Matthew Gordon at the Willowdale Estate in Topsfield. Sarah Minton moved to New York City in 2011 and lives on the Lower East Side. Since 2013 she has been a residential sales associate on the Upper East Side with the firm Brown Harris Stevens. Courtney Raftery married Patrick Beerman in 2014 in VA. Callie Stewart married William Sprague in 2014. Catherine Sullivan is a human resources manager at Ariadne Labs, a joint center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Catherine began MBA intro classes. Outside of work, she sings at Trinity Church in Copley Square and trains Courtney’s dog, Stella. Mariaah Williams, M.D. and Hussein Salifu, DMD were married in June in Nashville, TN. 2007 Meghan Arsenault received a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University with a concentration in Social Enterprise Administration. Living in NYC, she joined the Data and Performance Management team at Community Solutions

focusing on their Zero 2016 Initiative, a national movement committed to ending veteran and chronic homelessness in a designated group of US communities.

Kimberly Bodenlos and Madeline Fiore graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. They follow medical residency programs in their

specialties, Kim at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Madeline at Tulane University in Internal Medicine. Ann Corbett is a Senior Financial Analyst for EMC in Seattle. Grace Dubuque graduated in August from Georgetown University with a Masters in Art and Museum Studies. As part of her program, she spent the spring semester in London studying Art Business at Sotheby’s. Genevieve Nave received a Masters of Arts in Dance Movement/Therapy in May 2014. She works in the professional psychotherapy field in Boston and uses Dance and Expressive Arts in addition to traditional talk therapy with her patients.

Genevieve credits NCDS for initially introducing her to the profession through her involvement in Dance Company and says it’s been the best way to combine her undergraduate studies in neuroscience and dance. Jenn O’Brien graduated from Boston College’s Lynch School of Education in May 2014 with a M.Ed. specializing in teaching students with severe special needs. Jenn teaches students with autism in Grades 3 and 4 in the Boston Public Schools. Erin Pepin married Kyle Bare in September, with Kim Bodenlos as maid of honor and Erin’s cousin, Trustee Maura Murphy ’99, a guest. Erin and Kyle live in La Jolla, CA. Camile Rodriguez, a member of the Science Department at NCDS, also coaches Middle School soccer.

Sheila Sullivan is in her fourth year of teaching students with disabilities at a public elementary school in Washington Heights, NYC. Sheila also coaches new teachers through the NYC Teaching Fellows program.

2008 Jill Carlson is pursuing a Masters in Global Governance and Diplomacy at the Magdalen College of Oxford University in Great Britain.

sister Krissy Saraceno ’15 and Emily Ix ’15 rode the PanMass Challenge in August to support Dana Farber Cancer research. The trio cycled from Wellesley to Bourne and the next day Emily continued the ride to Provincetown. Maeve Westover ’14 (Holy Cross) had first place finishes in the 500

and the 1,650 freestyle, missing Holy Cross’ women’s swimming and diving meet record by a mere second and a half. The Crusaders finished second at the January Worcester City Championship. Maeve was named ECAC Division I Rookie of the Week (January 12-18) after placing first in the 1000 event. NCDS

2012 Lisa Richmond (Boston College) was an assistant coach for the 2015 NCDS varsity ice hockey and softball teams. Kathleen Barrett (Boston College) spent her junior spring semester in Florence, Italy. On a visit to Rome, she stopped at Trinità dei Monti to see the original Mater.

2013 In a note to Model UN moderator, Dr. McGlathery, Elizabeth Greene writes that she is a member of the University of Chicago Model UN team which is ranked top in the world. At the February 2015 MUNUC High School Conference, she was the Crisis Director of a Continuous Crisis Committee: The Executive Council of the GovernorGeneral of the Irish Free State, 1921. Caroline Hurley (Boston College) coached Middle School field hockey in 2014 and 2015 and lacrosse in 2015.
