Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel’s State-Of-The-Art Wellness Plaza Opens!

By Matt Wiley A line of traffic forms on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just north of the Shops at Wiregrass mall. The hundreds of vehicles are turning right into the entrance of the new Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC). Contrary to what many might assume driving past the long line of slow-moving traffic, there is not some sort of pandemic sweeping the area. In fact, the reality of the situation is quite the opposite.

On January 6, an estimated crowd of more than 5,000 people flocked to the Community Grand Opening of FHWC’s Health & Wellness Plaza on the hospital’s Wiregrass campus. So many, in fact, that the enormous parking lot for the hospital quickly filled, spilling traffic onto BBD as it was funneled into the Shops at Wiregrass parking lot via the recently opened interior connecting road.

Despite rain in the forecast, the sun shone and more than 5,000 people came out to see the state-of-the-art 50,000-sq.-ft. Health & Wellness Plaza,

which, much like the 83-bed hospital, itself, features technology (more on that below) that can’t be found anywhere else in the Tampa Bay area. “(The turnout) is amazing,” said Tracy Clouser, FHWC’s marketing director. “It shows that people in the community really are excited (about the Plaza) and curious about achieving long-term wellness.”

Although the Grand Opening didn’t officially begin until 1 p.m., Clouser says there already was a line forming for tours at 12:30.

The Grand Opening also featured the area’s first “Healthy Food Truck Rally,” featuring Two Asians & A Grill, Curbside Chef of Orlando (which won “Fan Favorite” for the day), The Cuppin’ Cake Truck, Maggie on the Move and the Honey Dripper.

As for the day’s entertainment, presentations were given by U.S. Olympic diver Chris Colwill, and there also were performances by the girls of To the Pointe Dance Studio, the Wesley Chapel High (WCH) cheerleaders and band, the Wiregrass Ranch High

An editorial by Gary Nager I still can’t seem to get to every event put on the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC), but I did have a chance to attend the naming of the 2013 Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel — which will be Troy Stevenson, the internet sales director at Wesley Chapel Nissan — who was feted at the official Honorary Mayor party hosted by Wesley Chapel Toyota; more on the Mayor’s race below).

While having the bash to honor Stevenson at another auto dealership may sound strange, the fact is that both dealerships are very much involved with the local Chamber in the dealerships’ home town. In other words, the WCCC obviously continues to attract not only the biggest business names in Wesley Chapel — but also hundreds of local mom-andpop businesses — to its amazing plethora of events each and every month. And, when you also consider that the monthly Chamber breakfasts at Saddlebrook Resort attract more than 100 people almost every month — and it seems to be a lot of new faces among those 100+ people every month — you get the idea that this is one active chamber with a whole lot of people who do more than just pay their dues every year.

So, why has it been such a struggle to get just a few of those very supportive members to pony up a couple of shekels to help the Chamber have its own page (or pages) in this publication?

First off, to answer my own question, it’s a couple of more shekels over

and above what the Chamber members already pay to belong and attend and/or participate in at least some of its events.

And, with the economy still not up to snuff, people today still need to find more value than ever in anything upon which they spend their hard-earned money. And, Wesley Chapel Chamber members already pay hundreds of dollars a year just to belong, then pay hundreds more for tables or booths at major Chamber events. There’s additional costs to attend breakfasts and, in some cases, putting on mixers and/or ribbon-cutting parties of their own. Then, when you add in the “human” cost to people who devote so much of their own time to the Chamber, you can see that the cost of being part of such an active organization may not be “cheap,” but few things that can really help your business have really ever been free — and Chamber membership obviously works for many of them.

And now, for as little as $40 per month (on an annual agreement), Chamber members can have a small-sized ad on the WCCC’s monthly page in the Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News. The page also will be posted both on our website (WCNeighborhoodNews. com) and on the Chamber’s website (WesleyChapel Chamber.com).

The other problem for us, as the most logical place the Chamber can publish a printed version of such a page — because no other local medium can touch our direct-mail circulation in zip codes 33543, 33544 and 33545 — is that the WCCC already gets so much “free” publicity in the pages of this publication without having had its own page in the paper

the last several years. In other words, why spend money on something you already get for free in the same publication? For one thing, it costs less to advertise on the Chamber’s page than it does for the smallest-size ad in any other part of the Neighborhood News. We get quite a few potential advertisers who are looking for ways to advertise for less in these pages, and this is a way to do that and also support the Chamber.

Our deal with the WCCC is that we wouldn’t run the page until we had enough advertisers to cover the cost of the page for the first few months, because the Chamber also has been trying to keep

itself on budget by making the WCCC’s page in this publication pay for itself. So, this will be the last such editorial I will run on the possible Chamber page. But, it would be a shame if we had to let it go.

Kinnan St. & Mansfield Blvd. Could Soon Make A Connection

By Matt Wiley In a dramatic turn of events, the barricades that block Wesley Chapel drivers from using Mansfield Blvd. in Meadow Pointe to travel south into Hillsborough County could soon come down if negotiations between the City of Tampa and Pasco County continue to move forward.

The issue of connecting Kinnan St. in the Cross Creek/K-Bar Ranch area to Mansfield Blvd. in Meadow Pointe has been at a standstill since the 2,000ft.-long roadway was paved north to the county line in 2007 by the developer of Live Oak Preserve in New Tampa.

Earlier in 2012, it didn’t appear that there was any hope of a connection being made in the near future. However, Pasco County officials recently have reached out to the City of Tampa about making that connection.

On November 26, David Goldstein, the chief assistant attorney for Pasco County, sent a document to the City of Tampa attorney’s office and an attorney for the K-Bar Ranch development, located east of Live Oak Preserve in the city portion of New Tampa, that detailed Pasco’s requirements for making the Kinnan/Mansfield connection.

“I am prepared to draft an agree-

ment with the City and K-Bar Ranch as soon they confirm these conceptual terms are acceptable,” says Goldstein.

However, at our press time, Goldstein noted that he had not yet received any response from the city or K-Bar since he sent the letter.

Senior assistant City of Tampa attorney Julia Mandell says that city officials have not yet had a chance to go over Pasco’s proposal.

“We’re waiting until we can get everyone involved on our end into a room at the same time to go over the proposal from Pasco and carefully analyze it from the City’s perspective,” Mandell explains. “We weren’t given a deadline (by Pasco County).”

Goldstein agrees that there is no time requirement for an agreement to be made, but the roads will remain barricaded until an agreement is reached.

Among the requirements, Pasco wants a commitment from the City and/or K-Bar to pay for traffic calming improvements, or traffic signals, at the intersection of Mansfield Blvd. and Beardsley Dr., which runs along the southern border of Meadow Pointe, as well as at Mansfield Blvd. and Wrencrest Dr. The county would cap the funding commitment at $500,000.

Goldstein’s memo also says that Pasco requires the right to construct any portion of the K-Bar East-West road between Kinnan St. and the planned Meadow Pointe Blvd. extension if the roadway hasn’t been constructed by K-Bar within four years of the Kinnan/Mansfield connection being made. Pasco officials also want right of way lanes from the city and/or from K-Bar for a connection further east, at the intersection of Wyndfield Blvd. and the Beardsley Extension, once it is constructed.

Once Lights Are Sequenced, New BBD Lanes To Open By Jan. 21!

By Matt Wiley Although the grand opening of the newly widened lanes of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. north of I-75 a couple of miles south of the Pasco County line has been delayed past the initial completion date of the first of the year, representatives for Hillsborough County say that an official opening date has now been announced.

For the past several weeks, the smooth, newly paved and painted BBD lanes from I-75 north to Pebble Creek Dr. have been teasing drivers who have still been stuck in traffic, as the lanes lay

unused on either side of the two lanes currently open in each direction, their access blocked by orange barrels.

“The lanes north of I-75 are set to open by January 21,” says Steve Valdez, spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Public Works department.

“We’re still getting all of the new signals powered by TECO (Tampa Electric Co.) and calibrated with the City of Tampa’s computer system to make sure that they are timed correctly.”

The lanes were originally slated to open by or before January 1, but the sequencing of the new lights forced the County to delay the opening.

Valdez says that since the county’s traffic signals on BBD are computercontrolled, they have to be in sequence with the City’s computer system.

The remaining segment of the first phase of Hillsborough’s BBD widening project that is still under construction from I-75 south to Palm Springs Blvd. is scheduled to open to four lanes in each direction by the second week in February, although Valdez says there still will be aesthetic work to be done when the lanes open.

“But, we’re getting there,” he says.

Although new BBD lanes soon will be open, the more than $100-million

expansion project that began in January of 2010 will begin its Phase 2 construction in 12-18 months. That phase will widen BBD to four lanes from Palm Springs Blvd. south to Bearss Ave. and is expected to take at least two years to complete, especially since two bridges south of Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms also will have to be replaced.

In addition, the New Tampa Gateway Bridge, which will bridge over I-75 and connect New Tampa Blvd. in West Meadows to Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms, is currently on schedule to open concurrently with the new BBD lanes south of I-75 in February.

The finishing touches are being put on the new lanes of BBD from north of I-75 to Pebble Creek Dr. in New Tampa. Those lanes should be within a few days after you receive this issue.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Chopper Ends Chase In Wesley Chapel

Suspects can run (or drive), but it’s difficult to hide from the speed and maneuverability of a helicopter.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), around 9:15 a.m. on January 7, two black, male suspects kicked the door in at a home in the Willow Pond neighborhood in Lutz, but fled in a red Ford Mustang when they saw that the owner was home.

An HCSO release states that deputies attempted to stop the vehicle at the on ramp of I-275 at Bearss Ave., but the suspects refused to stop and continued north in to Pasco County.

An HCSO helicopter was called into aid in the chase.

The chopper located the suspects’ abandoned vehicle at the Ashley Furniture HomeStore on S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel. The suspects had fled the vehicle on foot and attempted to hide under the I-75 overpass, but were apprehended with the help of Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies and the HCSO chopper.

The suspects, 22-year-old Zaki Grier of Tampa, and 29-year-old Jamar Sampson of Riverview, were found with

News Briefs jewelry on them and several other items were discovered in the vehicle, but none of those items were from the morning’s burglary attempt. Detectives are checking to see if any other homes in the area had recently been burglarized, and are trying to determine who owns the vehicle used in the chase.

Body Found In Meadow Pointe Ruled A Suicide

Deputies have determined the cause of death of a man whose body was found in a vehicle in the Meadow Pointe community to be a suicide.

According to a press release from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), deputies received a call just before 7 a.m. on December 27 that the body of a Hispanic male was found in a car at the end of Grenville Ct. in Meadow Pointe.

At first, PCSO ruled the death “suspicious.” However, following an investigation, the death has officially been ruled a suicide. The victim’s name was not released and no further information was available at our press time.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), between the hours of 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. on December 24, an unidentified black male (photo), wearing pink gloves, a white, hooded sweatshirt and a dark colored mask smashed a window at the Heritage Bank on S.R. 54. PCSO reports that the burglar pried open a cabinet once inside, but no money was taken.

That same evening, the Tampa Police Department (TPD) reports that the Bank of Tampa, located on Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms, also was burglarized between the same hours on Christmas Eve. Responding officers found a broken lobby window, but discovered no one inside. No money was reported stolen.

Authorities believe that the same suspect is responsible for these two bank burglaries, as well as the burglary of a Bay City Bank on December 22 in Lutz, four bank burglaries in Hernando County and two more bank burglaries in Brooksville. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO),

PCSO, TPD, Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and Brooksville Police Department are all working together to find the suspect.

“The suspect is still unknown, and still at large,” says Kevin Doll, a spokesperson for PCSO. The suspect is believed to be between 5’8”-5’10” in height and between 17 and 25 years of age. A TPD media release states that a gold Saturn Ion also was seen in the teller lane of the Bank of Tampa during the burglary and “is most likely involved.”

Bullets Found On New Tampa Buses Doughertys Sentenced To 35 Years In GA

By Matt Wiley Schools across the country have been on edge during the weeks following one of the biggest school shootings in history. The fact that bullets were discovered on school buses that serve New Tampa schools two days in a row less than a week after the incidents in Newtown, CT, has not helped.

Just one day after a bullet was found on a school bus serving three New Tampa schools (Wharton High, Liberty Middle and Turner Elementary on Dec. 17), more bullets were discovered on another Hillsborough County school bus, serving Freedom High and Greco Elementary in Temple Terrace.

The origin of the first bullet has been uncovered. A release from the Hillsborough County School District (HCSD) says that an 18-year-old Wharton student told the school’s resource deputy that he had found the bullet in his apartment complex on the way to his bus stop and that it fell out of his pocket on the bus. At our press time, no students had come forward about the bullets discovered on December 18. No additional guns or ammunition were discovered at any of the schools either day.

All schools involved in the Dec. 17 & 18 incidents remained on what the

Hillsborough County School District refers to as a “modified lockdown,” in which doors throughout the schools are locked and students are only allowed limited movement throughout the schools, at our press time. Access to these schools also was carefully controlled and identification was required to enter or have students released to parents from each of the schools.

Schools across the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel areas already were operating with a heightened security presence following the December 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, where a gunmen killed 26 people, 20 of which were children, before turning the gun on himself.

New Tampa schools were patrolled by both the Tampa Police Department (TPD) and deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), while Wesley Chapel schools were patrolled by armed deputies from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) during the last week of classes prior to the holiday break. Officers from departments usually reserved for large-scale events were assigned to schools to provide a “visible presence.” Police helicopters also were used to patrol schools from the sky in Tampa, according to a media release from HCSD.

The convictions continue to pile up for the “Dougherty Gang.”

On December 17, nearly 18 months after the three Pasco County siblings were taken into custody in Colorado following a cross-country crime spree, the Associated Press (AP) reports that each has received 35-year, 8month sentences from federal judge Hugh Lawson for robbing a Certus Bank in Valdosta, GA, on August 2, 2011. The trio began their run just east of Wesley Chapel, on S.R. 54 in Zephyrhills, and was not taken into custody until August 10 in Colorado.

According to the AP, during the sentencing hearing, the siblings apolo-

gized to the bank’s employees. While no one was actually injured during the robbery, surveillance videos showed Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 27, firing an assault rifle inside the bank and Lee Grace Dougherty, 30, firing a pistol, before the trio made off with more than $5,000.

In addition to the most recent sentence, Ryan Dougherty, 22, received 18 years, Lee Grace received 24 years and Dylan received 32 for their crimes committed in Colorado. The trio still faces charges in Pasco County for shooting at Pasco County Sheriff’s Office deputies during their crime spree’s first high-speed chase. —å MW

‘Make That Body’ With Lipo Light Imaging Body Sculpting Treatments

By Matt Wiley It’s that time of year again. New Year’s resolutions are upon us, and after all of that holiday indulging, it might be time to shave off a few pounds with the newest weight-loss product in the New Tampa area: the Lipo Light Imaging Body Sculpting System.

Brought to the area by New Tampa resident Geoff Rocque, 31, and Lutz resident Jessica Rueff, 32, through their company, known as “Make That Body,” Lipo Light is now offered at Namasté Yoga Studio’s Harmoni Spa, located on S.R. 54 in nearby Lutz.

Lipo Light is one of three LED Light Therapy consumer home-use products designed by Innovative Photonics, a United Kingdom-based company specializing in LED Light Therapy. The company’s website says that LED Light Therapy uses light-emitting diodes to produce specific wavelengths of light that create a beneficial physiological response in the human body.

“Lipo Light Imaging is the very first LED red-light-based system for body sculpting, contouring and lymphatic drainage,” says Rueff. “It harnesses the power of light therapy to trigger the body’s own natural ability to burn fat and also visibly reduce inches

from all around the body.”

The Lipo Light machine consists of eight pads, each with a total of 25 LED lights. These pads are applied for 30 minutes to target areas on the client’s body, basically any of the areas the client wants to slim down.

“The pads emit a specific wavelength of light (635 nanometers) which allows the fat cells to release fatty acids and glycerol through a process called lipolysis,” Rocque explains. “The fat cells are then burned off during exercise, helping to produce faster results in the gym.” Make That Body’s website also says that the heat and light given off by the pads stimulates that release of energy in the body.

Rueff explains that, when paired with a healthy lifestyle, Lipo Light is the new and natural slimming and toning alternative to invasive surgery.

But, Rueff also warns that Lipo Light isn’t an “easy way out.” In fact, vigorous exercise is still a key factor in the Lipo Light process.

“After each treatment, the client needs to burn between 300-500 calories,” Rocque says. “If the client doesn’t work out after the treatment, the fat that was released during the treatment will just be reabsorbed back into the body. Exercise is very important.”

Rueff says that the biggest advantage of using Lipo Light for weight loss is that it is non-invasive and easy.

Pura Indoor Cycling Studio — Just Don’t Call It The ‘S’ Word!

By Gary Nager So, even though I work out a minimum of three days a week (and usually more than that), thanks to our new advertisers — Pura Indoor Cycling Studio in the Shoppes at New Tampa in Wesley Chapel (between Publix and Bealls) — I decided to give the sport of indoor cycling a shot.

It’s not like I haven’t been a bike rider for a long time — I completed seven triathlons in my 30s and still can be seen tooling around on my bike from Flatwoods Park to Amberly Dr.

— I just never had taken an indoor cycling class before. In fact, I had never heard the term “indoor cycling” before.

Oh, I definitely had heard of another type of indoor cycling class, one which begins with the letter “S,” but had no idea this type of activity could possibly be referred to by this other name.

Pura Cycling Studio is the brainchild of co-owners and Mad Dogg Athletics-certified indoor cycling professionals Stephanie (aka “Sheila” Farquhar and Alfio (aka “Hoot”) Carroccetto. The young couple combines Stephanie’s gift for marketing and Alfio’s teaching ability (he previously taught biology at Freedom High in Tampa Palms), although both also are very buf, but slim, and obviously able to handle the rigors of teaching multiple sp....er, indoor cycling classes a day.

The studio is basically one large room with at least two dozen indoor bicycles all angled towards the instructor, who is on a raised podium adjacent to a major sound system wearing a headset microphone. The 45-minuteto-one-hour classes feature plenty of pulse-pounding music and lots of enthusiasm from Pura’s instructors.

I took pictures of one of Stephanie’s classes, but I also had the

Edward Jones Office Moves From Tampa Palms To Wesley Chapel!

By Camille Gillies Edward Jones may have left the building – but not the area! After 18 years, the familiar Edward Jones financial services office fronting Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center has relocated to the Windfair Professional Center, across BBD from the new Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel.

Financial advisor William Morales and longtime branch office administrator Nancy Carazo continue to assist New Tampa clients and manage daily office operations at the new location.

“We thought this was a good time to move,” explains Morales, who joined the firm in 2008. “When I took over the Tampa Palms office a few years ago, I had initially planned on opening a branch in Wesley Chapel, so this is working out just as I had hoped.”

Morales and Carazo, who both live in Wesley Chapel’s nearby Meadow Pointe community, moved to the new office park in June. Morales explains that Edward Jones prefers to locate its offices throughout the community rather than centralizing them in a large downtown office building.

“We feel we can serve our clients better if we are part of the community where we all live and work,” he says.

Chem-Dry Cleans Carpets Across Pasco County, Tampa Bay

By Camille Gillies The ornaments have been boxed, the Christmas tree dragged down to the curb and the wreath has been taken off the front door. There’s hardly any evidence that a holiday celebration ever occurred – except for those pesky stains you’re now noticing on your carpet. Anyone at your house knock over a glass of red wine, upend the gravy boat or sneak the dog some disagreeable ‘people’ food? There’s no need to stress over spilled eggnog!

Although the name indicates a western Pasco service area, the company also serves Wesley Chapel and all of Pasco and Pinellas counties (The Pinellas operations are under the name Chem-Dry of Clearwater/Largo). The carpet cleaning franchise is owned by brothers Rob, Joe and Mike McLemore. Rob and Joe live in Dunedin and Mike lives in Spring Hill, where he heads up the “northern” territory, which includes Wesley Chapel.

The siblings formed the partnership about a year ago, according to Rob, 36, who has more than 15 years of experience with Chem-Dry. He bought the company from the previous owner and brought his brothers into the business.

“We’ve always wanted to run a business together,” Rob says. “We’re a close family.”

After spending seven years as a carpet cleaning technician and eight years as general manager of the former business, Rob is the most experienced of the three partners in the carpet cleaning business. Joe, 41, had a military career, and Mike, 43, was a mechanic, but they have caught on quickly to the Chem-Dry operation.

“Mike is now close to completing all of the courses required to become a Master Technician, which is the highest level you can achieve in the industry,” says Rob, who happens to be a Master Technician, himself, although he says rarely cleans carpets anymore.

“Becoming a Master Technician involves five courses and takes about five years to complete. If you have a serious carpet problem, then you should request a Master Technician for the job. We are fortunate to have six of those technicians on staff, including three Master Technicians and two senior technicians, one being Mike. And everyone in our business is an employee. We do not use subcontractors.”

Wesley Chapel High Schools Get Another Good Report Card

By Matt Wiley It may already be halfway through another school year, but the grades are in for Wesley Chapel’s two high schools, and it looks like they’ve been doing their homework.

For the second straight year, Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) has earned a prestigious “A” from the Florida Department of Education (FDoE), and Principal Ray Bonti says he is excited.

“It’s just great,” he says. “The credit goes to everyone, from the teachers who come in and lead classes every day and the students who come in and learn, to the parents and the administration that leads and oversees it all, I’m very proud of everyone.”

Bonti says that overall contributors to the school’s grade include high FCAT scores and the highest graduation rate of any high school in Pasco County - 90 percent.

“It’s a combination,” he explains.

“We focus on doing everything well.

Academics are our top priority. Everything we do is to make sure that our students excel, graduate and go on to college. Maybe that’s why we’re so crowded.”

In addition to the highest graduation rate, Bonti says that WRH also has

the highest attendance of any high school in Pasco, with more than 2,000 students. WRH has steadily increased its overall state assessment grade since it was initially rated a “C” in 2007.

‘B’ Is Not For Bad

Just a few miles away from WRH, Wesley Chapel High (WCH) also received its 2012 report card, dropping a letter to a “B” since last year’s first “A” in the school’s history.

“We would have loved to have gotten another ‘A,’” says WCH Principal Carin Nettles. “But, we worked really hard. We were only seven points away from another ‘A,’ and only 13 points away from our score last year, so we’re still proud of how hard everyone worked.”

Nettles pointed out two categories that she thinks directly affected the score WCH received: the end of the math FCAT test and the school’s “Acceleration Participation” performance. Nettles says that instead of the traditional FCAT test in mathematics for sophomores, this year marked the first year of the Algebra 1 EOC (End of Course) Exam, which replaces the math FCAT. Eventually, she says, each of the important courses will utilize these exams, replacing the need for FCAT testing. However, even though

it was the first year being administered, the school’s overall grade was directly affected by students’ performances on the test. “(Administering the test for the first time) was difficult,” she explains.

“But, it’s not an excuse. Measures have already been put in place to improve mastery in mathematics.”

Among these measures are math tutoring sessions for any student who needs extra help. If students attend the tutoring sessions, they have the option to retake tests throughout the year if they were not happy with their score.

The second area that hurt WCH’s score, Nettles says, is the school’s “Acceleration Participation” performance. This category of school assessment looks at the number of advanced placement and dual enrollment classes offered at the school. Nettles says that the number of those classes that are offered is based on the number of requests from students to be placed in those classes.

Unfortunately, Nettles says that not as many students wanted to take those classes last school year, so WCH’s percentage went down, which affected the school’s overall grade. But, she says that more kids are signed up for those high-level classes this year.

“Everyone wants to get an ‘A,’” she explains. “But, the target, or the state standards, is always moving.

When I first got to the school four years ago, we got a ‘D’ and morale was way down. But, we pushed, adjusted and got us to an ‘A’ last year. It’s tough work for both teachers and students.”

Nettles adds that it’s tough to think about what strategies to implement for the next year when the school doesn’t find out its grade until halfway through the school year, but she is confident in the performance of both her staff and her students. “We always put the kids first,” she says.

Wesley Chapel Brothers Square Off In 2013 Sugar Bowl!

By Matt Wiley Young football players dream of playing in college and of, hopefully, one day making it to the professional ranks.

College football players dream of making it into the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) National Championship game or one of the other major bowl games, such as the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl. But, for two former Wesley Chapel High (WCH) Wildcats football players, this dream has become a reality.

However, neither Hunter nor Kamran Joyer ever dreamed that they would be playing against their brother in the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Hunter Joyer, 19, is a 5’10,” 249lb. sophomore fullback at the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville. His older brother Kamran, 22, is a 6’3,” 270pound offensive lineman in his junior year at the University of Louisville (Kentucky). On January 2, those two teams squared off at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans to see which team would taste sweet victory in the Sugar Bowl.

Unfortunately for Hunter, Kamran and the No. 21 Louisville Cardinals walked away the victors, defeating the No. 3 Gators, 33-23.

Hunter says that the only feeling that went through his mind when he found out that he and the Gators would be playing Kamran and the Cardinals was absolute shock.

“It didn’t really sink in until the day before the game,” he explains. “I thought, ‘Is this real? Is this really happening?’”

Kamran says that his reaction was very similar.

“I was really excited,” Kamran explains. “We always knew that it could happen, but what are the chances?”

Although Kamran started the game at right guard, the brothers didn’t actually get to share any time on the field together, since both play offensive positions. But, in the spirit of brotherly competition, Hunter jokes that it “definitely” would have gone in his favor if

they had actually faced one another.

“I saw him across the field on the other sideline a couple of times during the game,” Kamran says. “It was definitely different.”

Hunter says that he usually roots for Louisville and his brother, but this game was a definite exception.

Playing against each other would have been a first for the brothers, who previously played two seasons together for the Wildcats. Kamran graduated from WCH in 2009, after which Hunter transferred to Tampa Catholic and played his last two seasons of high school football before returning to WCH, the school he graduated from in 2011. Both went to their respective universities on full football scholarships and were among the top recruits in the country in their recruiting classes.

“Never in a million years would I have predicted this would happen,” says Kirsten Joyer, the boys’ mother. “Having one son play in a BCS Bowl game is a dream come true. Having two sons play in the same bowl, especially against one another, truly is a miracle.”

The Joyers, Watergrass residents, have been living in the Wesley Chapel area since 1995. Growing up, Hunter and Kamran both played numerous

sports in the Pasco Athletic League (PAL). Their father, Jack, was a football and basketball coach at Thomas E. Weightman Middle School, the same school at which Kirsten was an assistant principal in 2001.

“It was a great experience,” says Hunter of the trip to New Orleans.

“We had the whole family there, so it was nice to be together and go sightseeing.”

Both Joyers say that, although they were on separate sidelines, they know that their family was rooting for both of them equally.

“We may not know what the odds were of an event like this occurring,” said Kirsten after the matchup was announced. “However, we do know what the outcome will be. A Joyer is sure to win!”

Hunter says the game itself, which started with a Louisville interception for a touchdown on the game’s first offensive play and the Cardinals built on that momentum throughout, certainly didn’t go Florida’s way. “(The Sugar Bowl) was interesting,” says Hunter. “I feel like we were prepared. We worked hard in practice.

But, I guess the game just wasn’t meant for us to win.”

Congratulations To Our First-Ever ‘Best Of New Tampa’ Winners!

By Gary Nager As most anyone who has been reading this publication for any period of time surely knows, we have featured a Reader Dining Survey & Contest (see page 46) each of the past 19 years, but we’ve never offered any similar awards for other businesses that aren’t places to eat.

That is, we haven’t done so until this year, although we primarily promoted the contest through our website — WCNeighborhoodNews.com — which means that those of you who either don’t visit our website regularly (which you should, because we update it with great news and information every weekday, but that’s another discussion for another time and place) may have missed it altogether.

The good news is that several local businesses did a good job of promoting the contest to their regular customers, so we were actually very pleased with this year’s first-year contest total of nearly 400 entries, with those voters split roughly 60 percent from New Tampa and 40 percent from Wesley Chapel.

As you long-time readers know, we’ve run our annual “Reader Dining Survey & Contest all 19 years we’ve been in business. And, although I don’t know for sure if I’ve done it every year, I also have submitted a list of my favorite eateries in New Tampa & Wesley Chapel pretty much annually, because my selections and yours so seldom are the same....and this year is no exception.

One reason for the differences between my “survey” and yours each year is that I get all of that calendar year to look back on, while we start asking you to submit your favorites in October, and there are always newcomers that catch my eye that either weren’t open long enough to register with you or didn’t open until after your votes were already submitted. Ciccio’s Lodge - Always at or near the top of my list and our readers’ list, one of the saddest days I can remember in recent memory in our area (that didn’t involve anyone dying or being injured, of course) was the recent closing of my 2012 favorite restaurant in New Tampa, Ciccio’s Lodge. Managing partner Robert Garofano and his landlord at the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center unfortunately couldn’t come to an agreement on a new lease, so Garofano & Co. are now looking for another New Tampa location. I would order the Rondele cheese on the side next time, but the dish is an excellent mix of sweet and spicy.

I also have to say that I’m impressed with Ciao!’s ability to go from traditional Italian to unconventional grill restaurant, and always with a little bit of a twist.

If that’s true, then how come every time a business in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel closes, new places keep popping up in their place? This appears to be particularly true about local eateries, as you’ll be able to tell when you see all of the new places opening in our distribution areas!

Shops At Wiregrass Update

There’s quite a bit of news to report about the ever-evolving Shops at Wiregrass mall in Wesley Chapel.

For example, a new Charley’s Philly Steaks & Grilled Subs shop is set to open in the space previously occupied by The Teriyaki Experience, which closed a couple of months ago.

The owners of 900º Woodfired Pizza and Cafe 365 also are involved in opening the new sub shop, which has hundreds of locations from Hawaii to Alaska and even Japan and beyond.

The company’s website says “Charley” was taking a family vacation when a missed exit brought him to South Philly. His first encounter with a local delicacy, a Philly Cheesesteak, was love at first bite, so he brought his findings back home to Columbus, Ohio and began testing recipes on his college buddies.He opened the first Charleys on the Ohio State University campus and not long thereafter, to keep up with customer demand, Charley began franchising his award-winning taste in 1991.

Locations began popping up all over the world, including mall food courts, strip centers, airports and even Army & Air Force Bases.

Also now open on an outparcel on S.R. 56 in front of the mall is a new, freestanding Panera Bread. The new Panera is larger than the New Tampa location and now features the company’s hush-hush new “Hidden Secret Menu” of low-carb items.

Kwan Ming Bistro Opens, First Thai To Open Soon!

Wesley Chapel now has its first Chinese restaurant that isn’t either primarily a takeout place or a buffet, as Kwan Ming Bistro-Hong Kong Cuisine just opened in the same plaza on S.R. 56 that also is home to the everpopular Wolf’s Den Restaurant (in front of Sam’s Club).

The Bistro isn’t a big place, but it does have a sizable menu and I did have an opportunity to sample some of my usual Chinese favorites — BBQ spare

North Pole Ices Closes, La Fuente Opens In CC Center

Meanwhile, there’s been a lot of changes in the Cross Creek Center plaza at the corner of Cross Creek Blvd. and Kinnan St., where North Pole Ices closed at the end of November and La Fuente Real Mexican Restaurant opened a few weeks later.

We’re sad to see North Pole Ices go, but La Fuente has a great menu of authentic Mexican favorites and, on first taste, owner Roger (no relation to Sen. Marco) Rubio’s fajitas are the real deal,

so I definitely will go back for more!

New Eateries In Highwoods

We’ve recently reported a lot of news about the area we call Highwoods Preserve, especially being the only local media source to report the correct information about Lee Roy Selmon’s closing its doors for good (although we now hear Selmon’s will open a new location in Wesley Chapel; we’ll update you about when and where when we have more details) and about BB&T Bank opening a new branch shortly in the former Krispy Kreme Doughnuts location adjacent to the old Selmon’s.

Well now, we’re happy to report about two new eateries joining the serpentine shopping plazas located on the same (west) side of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. as Selmon’s and BB&T that wind their way around Highwoods Preserve — from the Verizon/Amscot building, past Linkster’s Tap Room, FedEx Office and Boston Market all the way to Starbucks.
