Sports Campus Has ‘Wow’ Factor!

However, what was originally earmarked to be a national tennis center back in 2001, and after that, a failed attempt headed up by former Major League Baseball star Gary Sheffield to build 19 baseball fields with on-site dormitories in 2015, is now just months away from opening as potentially the premier sports complex in Florida.

The state-of-the-art indoor sports facility primarily will be home to basketball (the building can be configured as eight regulation-sized courts), volleyball (up to 16 courts) and cheerleading, although Blalock says it can be configured to accommodate as many as 14 different sports.

The building also will house a large fitness area, kitchen, concession stand and various meeting and training rooms.

De Santis to the Venetian Event Center at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church seemed more concerned about the fact a partisan political rally — free or not — was being held inside a building on church grounds, even if that building technically isn’t the church itself.

And, the obvious motivating influence for members of both political parties who came out that day was indeed Pres. Donald Trump, who is arguably the most polarizing President in our history, whether you agree with everything — or nothing — he says and does.

But, with the crowd inside the building estimated at anywhere from 800-1,000 people for the free rally, it was clear that the vast majority of the people who came out that day — with cars parked along Cross Creek Blvd. almost back to BBD — were there to hear the VP tout the President’s successes the past three years and throw their support behind giving Trump and Pence (and De Santis) “Four More Years,” the rallying cry Pence reiterated multiple times.

De Santis, who introduced Pence, was called “the most popular Governor in the U.S., with a 76-percent approval rating” by Florida’s Republican Party chair Joe Gruters.

Then, De Santis touted his biggest successes — the strongest Sanctuary City ban in the country, raising starting salaries for all public school teachers in Florida to $47,000 per year and eliminating Common Core standards for our students, to name a few.

The Governor then introduced Pence by focusing on Pres. Trump’s successes and the VP’s leadership on several key issues, especially the revitalization of the U.S. space program and the enhancement of our military.

Then, Pence said, “Four more years is my reason to be here. I stand with President Trump. Florida said yes to Trump in 2016 and Florida will say yes to four more years.

As for the VP, Kaufmann said, “Pence is a spineless toady and a religious fundamentalist. Even though I want Trump out, Pence would not be a good replacement.”

Whether anyone liked it or not, this truly was Democracy in action and I thought it was pretty cool to be there for it.

Wiregrass Sports: Campus Expected To Further Propel Pasco’s Sports Tourism Continued from page 1.

amphitheater, playgrounds and can host concerts and other outdoor events.

As part of the project, Mainsail Development Group, Inc. will build a four-story, 128-room Residence Inn by Marriott just a few feet from the sports campus’ main entrance, according to site plans filed with the county on Jan. 22.

Another hotel, a Fairfield Inn, opened on adjacent Wiregrass Ranch property in 2018 and is within walking distance of the facility.

The sports campus is expected to be a huge boon for Pasco’s growing sports tourism, which was re-branded as the “Florida Sports Coast” last year.

Adam Thomas, the county’s tourism director, said that Pasco drew more than one million tourists last year, and 87 percent indicated they would return for future vacations.

Thomas also said he believed that once the facility has been completed, people will be lining up from all over the country to get their youth sporting events hosted there. The campus is scheduled to host a volleyball tournament in September to kick things off, with a half-dozen more tournaments already on the schedule.

“The wow factor is definitely there when you walk in,” Thomas said. “It’s not even done, and you can see the magnitude of this facility.”

The $17-billion youth sports market in the U.S. continues to grow, and the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County is poised to grab its share

of that market on the weekends. However, Blalock also said that the local community will also be served by the facility, especially during the week.

“We’re excited to have it open at 6 a.m. with local seniors, all the way to 10 p.m. with the kids, and then the weekends (with youth sports events),” Blalock says. “We’re excited about all of it.”

Blalock, the former recreation director for the city of Newberry, FL, said this is the biggest project RADD Sports has tackled. He also said that architects and engineers developed a facility in Alachua where the basic design is similar, but the Wiregrass Ranch campus is almost three-times larger. In fact, he hopes the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County will become the model for future projects, and he envisions building four more in Florida.

“This is the prototype,” he said. “We hope these plans can go on the shelf (when we’re done) and we can just pull them and keep going.”

From tennis courts to baseball diamonds to basketball, volleyball and cheerleading, the journey has been a long one. Porter, however, says it couldn’t have ended any better. He looks forward to seeing how the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County impacts the area, and is glad the final product didn’t just focus on singular sports, like the previous tennis and baseball projects, but rather became a facility that offers something for everyone.

“It’s probably one of the most rewarding projects to come out of the ground here,” Porter said.

“We took this project and said, ‘Hey, how can we retool this to make it benefit everybody?’ We came back (with something) that is probably much better than what anyone envisioned 10-15 years ago.”

Stunner: Earth Fare, We Hardly Knew Ya!

In a rather stunning move, Earth Fare, Wesley Chapel’s first — and only — large green grocer, is closing all of its stores, including the Cypress Creek Town Center location on the north side of S.R. 56.

In a press release last week, the North Carolina-based grocer announced it was liquidating all of its stores nationwide, and that liquidation sale was to begin immediately. Even store fixtures could be had, the release noted.

“Earth Fare has been proud to serve the natural and organic grocery market, and the decision to begin the process of closing our stores was not entered into lightly,” the company said in the press release. “We’d like to thank our Team Members for their commitment and dedication to serving our customers, and our vendors and suppliers for their partnership.”

The Wesley Chapel location will likely not make it to its first anniversary, when more than 100 shoppers lined up on Feb. 19, 2019, eager to be some of the store’s first customers.

Kennedy said she had recently read about Earth Fare closing a store in Gainesville on Jan. 11 after only four years.

However, she still didn’t think the Wesley Chapel store, which was the 12th for the company in Florida, was in any danger. “It is very shocking,” Kennedy says. “I thought we would be immune from those

closures because it was so recently opened.”

On a VIP tour of Earth Fare a week before it opened, CEO/president Frank Scorpiniti touted the quality of Earth Fare’s organic products, which do not contain high-fructose corn syrup, artificial fats, colors, sweeteners, or preservatives, or meats that were bred with antibiotics or growth hormones.

The chain had a “boot list” — a long list of banned ingredients it does not allow in anything sold in any Earth Fare store.

At the time, Scorpiniti said the Wesley Chapel opening was just the beginning of an aggressive plan to expand Earth Fare’s footprint. At the time, the company was operating 50 stores, and Scorpiniti said he expected there to be more than 100 locations within a few years.

Earth Fare, which was founded in Asheville, NC, in 1975, said its financial struggles were too much to overcome, and hinted that its efforts to overcome those struggles had failed.

“While many of these initiatives improved the business, continued challenges in the retail industry impeded the company’s progress as well as its ability to refinance its debt,” the press release said.

“As a result, Earth Fare is not in a financial position to continue to operate on a go forward basis. As such, we have made the difficult, but necessary decision to commence inventory liquidation sales while we continue to engage in a process to find potential suitors for our stores.”

There was still some inventory available at our press time on Feb. 6, but everything was being discounted and most items were literally flying off the shelves.

A Stark Reminder About The Threat of Human Trafficking

By LIBBY BALDWIN It seemed fitting that a classic Florida sunset — vibrant slashes of pink, purple and orange — marked the beginning of Light Up The Night, an annual event created to raise education and awareness about human trafficking, The free event, held right around sunset on Feb. 1 on the upper level parking garage at The Shops at Wiregrass by the Pasco County-based Human Trafficking Foundation (HTF), featured musical performances, local vendors, refreshments, activities for children and teenagers, and the Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Posse on horseback.

Also appearing were survivors of human trafficking, including Edie Rhea, who told those in attendance that she was sexually abused and trafficked from age 8-17 by her mother’s boyfriend, after he convinced her mother to move to Tampa from their hometown of Baltimore, MD. “Moving us was very smart on his part, because it got us completely away from all our friends and family,” said Rhea, 51, who now lives in North Tampa and serves as Executive Director of Healing Root Ministry, a faith-based nonprofit that assists female trafficking victims over the age of 18 with housing, life skills training and obtaining GEDs. Rhea, who at age 12 was impregnated and then forced into having an abortion by a man who had purchased her, found herself on the street at 17 with no education or basic skills after her mother had kicked out her and her trafficker.

She met up with a man named David, who used to buy drugs from her mother, and the two began a relationship.

Today, 34 years later, they are happily married with five children, three adults and two under the age of ten they recently adopted.

Helping Those Who Help Victims

According to HTF, it is the second-largest criminal enterprise in the world, behind drug trafficking, with an estimated 40.3 million current victims worldwide.

Between 15,000-18,000 are trafficked annually into the U.S. alone, and Florida currently ranks third in the nation for calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

The Tampa Bay area, says the foundation, is usually in the top three cities in the state for trafficking.

In 2017, Pasco County became the first “Trafficking-Free Zone” in the country. This distinction, given by the U.S. Institute Against Human Trafficking, intends to send a message to traffickers that they are being watched, thereby reducing the demand for their victims.

“A lot of people believe that this only happens overseas, but it’s also happening here, now, in our own backyard,” said Rhea, who spends 65 hours every week running Healing Root pro-bono.

Even as the temperature dropped into the low 50s with chilly winds at the event at the Shops, attendees talked with vendors, pledged donations, and enjoyed hot cocoa, popcorn and cotton candy to the backdrop of performances from the Northwest Community Church

“The whole idea of Light Up The Night was simply that this is such a dark crime,” said Cpl. Alan Wilkett, HTF chairman and commander of the Pasco County Human Trafficking Task Force.

“This criminal activity is probably the darkest crime that I’ve ever investigated,” said Wilkett, 58, who has been in law enforcement for 27 years, “and I’ve had the opportunity to investigate just about everything you can imagine.”

Permitting Snafu Aside, Axes Start Flying March 7!

Michael and Alecia Esenwein had hoped to have their new, hip axethrowing hangout already opened, but permitting issues have called for a change of plans.

The Kilted Axe, which will still be the first new business to open in The Grove since developer Mark Gold purchased it late last year, is now expecting to have its grand opening on Saturday, March 7, 5 p.m., although axe-throwing leagues may start a few days before that.

The Kilted Axe held a Friends & Family soft opening on February 8 (check out our video on our Facebook page) and then closed back down to put on the finishing touches.

The latest entry into the Wesley Chapel nightlife scene is located right across the street from The Grove offices at 6027 Wesley Grove Blvd.

It features multiple axe-throwing lanes, indoor and balcony seating, and will serve beer, wine and bar food.

The event, which featured 35 restaurants and beverage distributors and drew roughly 2,000 people last year, will be held at the AdventHealth Center Ice for the third consecutive year on Sunday, March 29, noon-4 p.m.

Organizer and Rotary Club of New Tampa member Karen Frashier said the name change was for copyright purposes and to bring the event in line with the North Tampa Bay Chamber, which owns the rights to the event and its name.

She said the new name may also help the event draw restaurants from a larger area. “We have found that to be true,” Frashier says. “We’ve had restaurants applying from all over the area, all the way out to Odessa.”

Frashier says last year’s People’s Choice Restaurant Winner, Bahama Breeze, has already committed to participate in the event again this year, although she had not yet provided us with a list of the other restaurants

Innovative Treatment For Depression Available At Florida TMS Clinic

By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN As Khaled Bowarshi, MD, studied to be a psychiatrist and internist, he realized that treating depression with pills has proven not to be the best way to go. With undesirable side effects and even failures where some medications sometimes don’t work for some people, Dr. Bowarshi wanted to be part of the future of helping people in a more effective way.

In November 2019, he opened Florida TMS Clinic in the Cypress Glen Professional Park in Wesley Chapel, just north of S.R. 56. Here, he offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS for short. TMS is a treatment for depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain known to be responsible for depression. “I started on New Year’s Eve and go five days a week,” she says. “So far, I’m very optimistic. I love going because of the doctor and the staff. They have this great attitude and optimism that life’s going to be different, and I’m seeing it day by day.”

Dr. Bowarshi says he also tries to make the treatment affordable for patients. He admits it can be challenging to get insurance companies to agree to pay for the TMS therapy, with patients sometimes needing to show up to four failures using antidepressants. By CELESTE MCLAUGHLIN Twenty years ago, Veronica Davidson had broken up with Justin Timberlake and taken Britney Spears’ place in the girl band Innosence and was touring the world on its biggest pop stages.

When it was time for her to leave the music scene, Veronica (photo) settled in the Tampa Bay area and began selling real estate, building a team that propelled her career and allowed her to hone her leadership skills.

Although 2019 was an even better year for

restaurants in Wesley Chapel than in New Tampa, there’s no doubt that our readers on both sides of the Pasco County line had a lot to say about our local eateries for 2019.

In total, we had a record number of right around 1,500 ballots cast this year, surpassing our old record of more than 1,200 a few years ago. And the split of the voters was roughly 900 Wesley Chapel ballots and 600 New Tampa votes submitted this year. We thank young Jonathon Cotey, the son of managing editor John Cotey, who was charged with tallying all of those ballots. Great job, Jonathon!

One thing that I know helped stimulate more votes this year was the fact there were far fewer categories. For example, the only way to judge who won categories that didn’t appear on this year ballots — like favorite Latin, Asian, Mediterranean and favorite burgers was to see who received the most votes (five faves per ballot) for favorite restaurant in New Tampa.

And, among those winners were Yamato Japanese Steakhouse for your favorite Asian restaurant in Wesley Chapel, followed by Bonsai Sushi, Umu Japanese & Thai, Asian Buffet and Arroy Thai.

The Latin restaurant that received the most Favorite Restaurant votes in Wesley Chapel was Chuy’s Tex-Mex, followed by Capital Tacos, Los Vallartas, Rice & Beans and Cantina Laredo. Rice & Beans also received more “Favorite Restaurant in Wesley Chapel” votes than any other newcomer, beating out Walk-On’s Bistreaux & Bar and Blaze Pizza.

B ahama Breeze Island Grille has only been located on the north side of S.R. 56 for two years or so, but the popular chain continues to attract large numbers of visitors — and votes in our annual Reader Dining Survey — each year it has been open.

New general manager Melissa Altamare recently took over for the beloved former GM Jeannie Lafever, but Melissa is a long-time Bahama Breeze employee who helped Jeannie open what we call the Wesley Chapel location.

Melissa is equally as friendly as Jeannie and the bottom line is that a lot of people love the whole tropical feel and menu of Bahama Breeze — even though some locals complain that the restaurant seems somewhat out of place here because it’s not located on a body of water.

irst Watch was the only real surprise for me in our readers’ top-5 in WC, not just because it’s only open for breakfast and lunch but also because the parking and wait times, especially for weekend brunch are so unbearable. Even so, I agree that the menu options are unique and tasty.

...AND BEST BAR T here’s no doubt that Bahama Breeze Island Grille is popular, but considering the selection of bars and restaurants now located in Wesley Chapel, it was a bit of a surprise to see the popular Darden Restaurants brand take home both our readers’ Favorite Bar in WC and Favorite Restaurant.

It probably shouldn’t be so surprising, however, considering that the Bahama Breeze bar has more seats — inside and out — than any other in or near Wesley Chapel. In addition, it’s one of our area’s few live music venues and, Melissa says, “with so many other restaurants and businesses having opened around us, there’s a lot more nearby parking than there was when this location opened.”

And of course, for those seeking sweet tropical specialty

drinks, few local hangouts offer the variety that Bahama Breeze does, from a full line of mojitos to cocktail flights to the famous Bahamarita, or half-priced appetizers during Happy Hour and other bar specials.

rass Tap, for my money, is truly Wesley Chapel’s premier bar hangout and has only grown in popularity since the nearby Primebar closed in the Shops at Wiregrass. With the cheapest premium full-liquor bar prices at the mall and karaoke, live music and trivia, the Brass Tap is hard to beat.

J’s Brewhouse would finish higher on my own list of Wesley Chapel favorites if it just had a few additional seats at its always-packed bar. BJ’s has one of the more-rounded food menus in Wesley Chapel, and reasonable enough prices, it just could use a more bar-friendly configuration, in one editor’s opinion.

he Basement has long been one of Wesley Chapel’s best-kept secrets, especially since it’s technically located in Lutz.

But, its great beer and hard seltzer/wine-based cocktail selection, karaoke and DJ dance music and occasional comedy nights always bring out a lively, fun crowd — and the drink prices are great.

tonewood Grill & Tavern’s three-peat as our readers’ Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa should come as no surprise.

For me, Stonewood’s decision to start opening for lunch a year or so ago was a great move. And, even though the menu is a little pricier than what many people want to spend for lunch, the food is great and the quieter, less-crowded atmosphere is perfect for conducting a business meeting or social event.

Jannah and I especially enjoy the seared ahi tuna appetizer, the 6- and 9-oz. filet mignon options, the fresh fish (we shared an excellent grilled grouper on our most recent

here is no doubt that Harold Hasselback, the owner of the Cappy’s Pizzeria in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center, has never lost sight of what his five Cappy’s locations do best.

While some restaurants try to be all things to all people, Cappy’s menu consists mainly of pizza, calzones, salads (like the awesome Greek salad pictured here) and beer.

The pizza, which I have described in years past as “thin crust, but not authentic New York-style” and “deep-dish, but not authentic Chicago-style,” has been among our readers’ favorites since Cappy’s first opened in Tampa Palms almost a decade ago, but had never won the title of “Favorite Pizza in New Tampa” — until now.

Aldi, Aussie Grill, Bonefish & Carrabba’s, Oh My!

There’s plenty of action happening these days on both the north and south side of S.R. 56 just west of I-75, but nothing is more anticipated than the Aldi grocery store taking shape in front of Costco.

Although no grand opening date has been announced, the signs are up on the outside of the building that looks just a few weeks away from opening.

Right across S.R. 56, a number of eateries are going vertical in the Cypress Creek Town Center, including three Bloomin’ Brands restaurants — Carrabba’s Italian

Grill, Bonefish Grill and Aussie Grill by Outback. The local Aussie Grill will be the first-ever freestanding location for the fast-casual eatery that currently only has kiosks at the International Plaza and the Brandon Town Center.

After our Neighborhood News Online video came out about the progress on these restaurants last week, a comment on our Facebook page said that the Bonefish on Bruce B. Downs Blvd. south of S.R. 56 would close when the new Bonefish opens, but we had not yet received confirmation about that at our press time.

In other news from this area of 56, according to permitting filed with Pasco County, Zukku Sushi is also opening in the Cypress Creek Town Center.

Zukku means canvas or cloth in Japanese, and according to the restaurant’s website, the rice is your canvas.

With its first location inside the hip and trendy Armature Works in South Tampa, Zukku specializes in sushi bowls and sushi. — JCC • Meanwhile, on the south side of 56, there’s been lots of progress made on the Main Event Entertainment bowling and kids play place (plus restaurant and bar), the Cigars International superstore (and cigar lounge), as well as on the Rock & Brews restaurant, a newer chain inspired by the rock group KISS and owned in part by band members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. We did not yet have word on when the planned Landry’s-owned Saltgrass Steakhouse would begin going vertical.

A packed house heard Gold and NTBC CEO Hope Kennedy (formerly Allen, photo above) provide updates about the project at the Pebble Creek Golf Club, and among the biggest news was the wet zoning of the entire Grove property.

“It’ll be pretty cool to be able to get a drink at one of the restaurants and walk the entire property with it,” Hope said.”

Gold assured the crowd that he will deliver on everything he’s been promising, “and it’ll happen fast,” he said. “The Grove is going to be something really different, something special, and we already have more than 30 restaurants signed and ready to go.”

Mahana Fresh Opens In New Tampa!

So, the poké bowl craze is in full bloom in New Tampa, as Mahana Fresh, which has an existing location in Bradenton, has just opened on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. just north and west of I-75 (at 17512 Doña Michelle Dr.), in the plaza that also is home to Bay Care Urgent Care (next to Glory Days Grill).

Owner Ryan Mortti (above), who previously managed the McDonald’s restaurants on BBD (north of Cross Creek Blvd.) and S.R. 56, warns that Mahana Fresh is “much more than just another poké bowl place.”

Ryan says that in addition to the usual ahi tuna and chicken poké bowls, Mahana Fresh also cooks up proteins like grilled steak, teriyaki and Asian BBQ chicken and miso roasted tofu.

Plus, there are unique “pour your own” beer taps with a nice variety of beers.
