Thousands Attend ‘Smooth & Dry’ Second Wesley Chapel Jazz Festival!

Organizer Tim Hancock (at far right in photo, right) of Jazz Tyme Productions, LLC, says he was “overwhelmed” by the outpouring of public support at the second Wesley Chapel (WC) Jazz Festival — which was held on May 23 at the Wesley Chapel District Park on Boyette Rd. Despite sweltering mid-90s heat, the rains held off this time as Hancock (who had to postpone the original second Jazz Festival in March because heavy rains wiped out the event) and his talented friends got a break from Mother Nature as the Festival ran its full length (from noon-8 p.m.) and an estimated crowd of 4,500-5,000 people enjoyed the family-friendly event — more than tripling the crowd for the first WC Jazz Festival held Aug. 29 of last year!

The entertainment was top-notch and ranged from an a cappella duet to Hancock’s headlining Abnique & Friends. About two dozen food, beverage and business vendors helped make the Festival a hit for everyone.

A Heartfelt Tribute To Thomas ‘Cole’ Porter (1994-2015) An editorial by Gary Nager Anyone who has been reading this publication for any period of time already knows that (like most people) I have a really hard time when anyone close to me passes away, no matter what age they may have been.

So, it’s especially hard for me to hear that a beautiful, sweet, hard-working giant of a young man was taken from his beautiful family — a family I have known for more than a dozen years — at the way-too-young age of 20.

Like so many New Tampa and Wesley Chapel residents, I was devastated to hear that Thomas “Cole” Porter was killed May 24 in an accident on his motorcycle following working with his father Scott on a construction job in State College, PA. Cole, the middle of Scott and his wife Kelly’s three sons in age, was the tallest, burliest and possibly sweetest of the three boys and his passing — he was wearing a helmet, but suffered massive injuries to his chest cavity in the accident — set off shockwaves throughout both New Tampa (where Cole and his brothers Cyler, 23, and Conor, 15, were raised) and here in Wesley Chapel, since the family moved to Meadow Pointe several years ago.

Literally hundreds of people attended the beautiful, albeit heart-wrenching service at Pastor Brad White’s Lifepoint Community Church on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., in front of Hunter’s Green, for this selfless young man who was described by a friend during the service as “carefree, but never careless.”

outdoorsmen who loved to hunt, fish and ride motorcycles with their dad and friends.

Cyler, who was a great baseball pitcher, has always been more outgoing and eloquent than most “kids” his age, but I told him that the speech he gave about Cole — who was an outstanding catcher and intimidating presence in the batter’s box who boomed home runs “that other kids just couldn’t hit” — was like him, “pitching a perfect game to his wonderful brother.” Cyler also noted that Cole had “more of a full beard than most of the parents” at his baseball games by age 13 and that parents of opposing teams often asked to “see his birth certificate and/or his driver’s license, even when he was only 11 or 12 years old.”

He said that Cole “smiled bigger, hugged better and loved better” than anyone else he ever met and that he knew Cole was looking down from heaven at everyone in attendance and wishing that they could just be happy for and celebrating with him that he was at peace, instead of sad because he passed away.

Rest in Peace, Cole. You’re sorely missed!

Wesley Chapel Ice Rink Officially Named ‘Florida Hospital Center Ice’

Dirt has been turning on the site of what will be the largest ice hockey facility in the state for the past several months, but the complex finally has a permanent name: Florida Hospital Center Ice (FHCI).

The name was revealed during an announcement at the site on May 14. Z Mitch, LLC, developer Gordie Zimmermann and Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC) CEO Denyse Bales-Chubb unveiled the new sign that stands outside of where the future four-story, 150,500-sq.-ft. building will soon rise along Cypress Ridge Blvd. in Wesley Chapel, on the northeast corner of the I-75/S.R. 56 interchange.

The name is the result of an online naming contest that has been going on since ground officially was broken on the facility during a well-attended ceremony in February. Zimmermann said that more than 200 entries were submitted, but Florida Hospital Center Ice ultimately was chosen. He said the winning name was first submitted by an unnamed local hockey player, “but the names Center Ice and Ice Center were submitted by several people.”

He added, “When you want to change things up in hockey, you say, ‘Let’s regroup at center ice.’”

He added that vertical development will soon begin at the site. Unlike most other developments in the area (specifically the future Tampa Premium Outlets on the south side of S.R. 56 on the other side of

the interstate), Center Ice will be constructed primarily out of structural steel, rather than cement.

And, with the special refrigeration and ice-making pipes that had to be built below the four ice surfaces before vertical construction could begin, FHCI will rise slowly and could take until just before this winter’s holiday season to complete.

“The building basically is steel with siding on it,” Zimmerman said, adding that next, the bases of the ice pads will have to be installed before the walls go up. To do so, Zimmermann said that crews will have to map out exactly where the ice pads and walls will go and dig out nine inches of dirt in their shape.

“We’re still looking at (opening

around) the holidays,” Zimmermann said. “We’re really busy. We’re just about there.”

Wesley Chapel A Hotbed For New Schools & School Boundaries

By Matt Wiley It’s no secret that Wesley Chapel (WC) has seen serious growth the past several years.

In fact, the growth has been so significant that the area’s schools once again are struggling to keep up with the amount of students who continue to enroll in them, as more and more families arrive and expect their students to attend specific schools near their homes.

Dist. 1 Pasco County School Board member Allen Altman, who represents four of Wesley Chapel’s schools on the Board, told the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) at the group’s Economic Development Briefing luncheon at Hoosier’s Grill (located inside the semi-public Heritage Isles Country Club off Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa) that parents too often believe that their kids are guaranteed to attend a specific school based upon where they live. But, Altman says, that assumption is a fallacy.

“I was having breakfast with a developer recently and he told me that nine families in his development had bought homes, sold them and moved across the street because they heard that their student could attend a specific school if they lived on the other side of the street,” Altman (photo) said. “I just want to stand before you today and let you know that you can’t grow like this county has grown — and like we’ve continued to grow this year — and think that there aren’t going to be new schools, that (existing) school boundaries won’t (have to) be redrawn and that there won’t be transfers. It’s impossible.”

Each time a new school opens, Altman said school zone boundaries have to be redrawn and students many times are required

to move to a different school to help with capacity issues. Such was the case when Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) opened to provide relief for Wesley Chapel High (WCH), as well as at each elementary and middle school that has opened in our area the past few years.

Currently, there are more than 69,000 students in the Pasco County School District (PCSD), which also is the county’s largest employer (with more than 9,800 employees). Altman said that in the years leading up to the “Great Recession” in 2008, PCSD’s enrollment was growing at an average of 10 students per day, a level that would require one new elementary school each year, in order to have enough room for new students.

Enrollment slowed down with the economy, actually decreasing by 350 students in 201112, but began to pick up again going into the 2012-13 school year, with 460 new students.

“In the 2013-14 school year, (PCSD) grew by 950 students, and this year, it’s grown by more than 1,000,” Altman explained, adding that next school year’s projections show about 1,200 new students.

According to data from PCSD’s Planning director Chris Williams, when all of the future developments in our area are built out (Wiregrass Ranch, Chapel Crossings, Union Park, Wesley Chapel Lakes and Wyndfields in WC, plus Two Rivers and River Landing

along Morris Bridge Rd.), our area is looking at nearly 14,000 more students!

Altman’s presentation showed that, in Pasco County, 39 percent of the schools currently in service were built between 1998 and 2010, and that, in the past 12 years, alone, PCSD has built 31 schools at an average of about three schools per year, 10 of which have been in WC. Since 2002, PCSD has spent $301 million building new schools.

“The growth is just unbelievable,” Altman said. “If we didn’t have the Penny (for Pasco, the one-cent sales tax that helps raise money for education, transportation and other infrastructure costs), we’d be in desperate straits.”

Altman said that when the first round of the Penny started in 2004, Sand Pine Elementary in Meadow Pointe was at 186-percent of its 525-student capacity.

“We’ve made a great dent in (the capacity issues), and we’ve built some more schools,” Altman said.

However, even though 10 schools have been built in WC since 1998, several still are operating way above capacity. For example, WRH currently is operating at 149-percent of its 1,633-student capacity and will begin 10-period days next school year, while Seven Oaks Elementary is operating at 174 percent of 674-student capacity.

For that reason, over the next three school years, two new schools will be constructed in the WC area, Altman said, although finding sites for them hasn’t been easy. Plus, the newly renovated Quail Hollow Elementary will reopen for the 2015-16 school year and its previous boundaries will go back into effect.

“Finding school sites is tough and expensive,” he explains. “There are districts (like Orange County in Orlando) that have spent more money on one school site than we spend on four or five. The sites have to have acreage and (have the necessary road capacity in place) to handle the increased traffic. We’ve tried to get ahead of (the growth).”

For the 2016-17 school year, a new elementary (currently referred to as Elementary School “W”) will open next to Dr. John Long Middle School in the Wiregrass Ranch Development of Regional Impact (DRI), that will have capacity for 762 students. The new elementary will affect the boundaries of students who currently attend Double Branch, Seven Oaks and, potentially, Sand Pine elementaries.

In addition, a new high school (currently called “GGG”) also will be built at Old Pasco Rd. near Overpass Rd. and have capacity for 1,878 students. Site work should begin this September and the school is tentatively planned to open for the 2017-18 school year. The new high school will impact the boundaries of students attending WCH, WRH and incoming freshmen from Thomas E. Weightman Middle School.

The Old Pasco Rd. site also has enough space for a future middle school (“HHH”), although no development timeline has yet been established. Other future schools to be built in Wesley Chapel with no set timeframes include Middle School “II” on Meadow Pointe Blvd. and Elementary School “U” in Northwood. Eight other future schools also are planned in other areas across the county.

Wesley Chapel WC Man Killed On I-75

A Wesley Chapel man is dead, after being struck by a vehicle as he was walking along I-75 because his pickup truck separated from the trailer it was hauling.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), 24-year-old Adrian Carlton Fedrick, Jr., was traveling northbound in the inside center lane of I-75 north of Fowler Ave., when a trailer that he was hauling with his pickup truck came unhooked.

The FHP report says that Fedrick exited his truck and was walking ahead of his vehicle when a Nissan sedan driven by Jessica Lori Burgess, 25, of Tampa, struck the trailer. Burgess came to a controlled stop after the collision.

The Chevrolet pickup driven by James Robert Connolly, 29, of Spring Hill, passed the disabled truck and struck Fedrick, who sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Medical Emergency Causes I-75 Crash In Wesley Chapel

A Wesley Chapel man is recovering from injuries he suffered following a medical emergency that caused a serious accident on I-75, just north of the S.R. 54 interchange.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at 1:20 p.m. on May 20, Brian P. Reilly, 57, was driving southbound in his 2006 Hyundai Elantra near in the right turn lane for the S.R. 54 exit, when he suffered an unidentified medical emergency.

At the same time, a car-transporting truck was stopped on the southbound shoulder of the interstate. Reilly lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the rear of the car transporter. The driver of the truck, who was not identified, was not in the vehicle at the time and did not sustain any injuries.

Reilly was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa with serious injuries. His medical emergency was

Teens Busted For Bridgewater Burglaries

from the planned opening date of the Tampa Premium Outlets at the Cypress Creek Town Center Development of Regional Impact (DRI) on both sides of S.R. 56 between Lutz and Wesley Chapel, the mall’s parent company, the Simon Property Group, has named the shopping destination’s first general manager.

Simon announced last month that the outlet mall’s first general manager is Stacey Nance (photo), who has worked for the company for more than 17 years.

The release says that Nance — who holds a B.S. degree in Marketing & Management from Ball State University in Muncie, IN — has previously served as the manager of the Muncie Mall and began her new position at the local outlet mall on May 18.

“Stacey is a motivated and detailoriented individual with years of leadership experience,” said Mary Spaulding, regional VP for Simon’s South Region in the release. “Her priorities include creat-

It’s always smart to lock your doors, even in your own driveway, as the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) reports that two teens have been arrested for numerous auto burglaries in the Bridgewater community of Wesley Chapel (which is located off Curley Rd.).

PCSO reports that, on May 19, two juveniles, one age 16 and the other 15, broke into a total of 23 vehicles in the Bridgewater community. Once inside the vehicles, which were unlocked, the two removed money, keys and other property. Several of the acts were caught on surveillance footage from homes within the neighborhoods.

The 16-year-old was charged with 12 felony counts of auto burglary and one count of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, while the other was charged with 11 felony counts of auto burglary and one count of burglary of a conveyance. The two were arrested and taken to the Pasco Juvenile Detention Center.

Because their crimes were not of a violent nature, we didn’t identify the teens, even though they were charged as adults and their names were disclosed by PCSO.

Once on the shoulder, FHP reports that Penn’s Mustang collided with a roadside sign, rotated, overturned and caught fire. Penn was airlifted to St. Joseph’s hospital with serious injuries.

The FHP report says that Penn was wearing a seatbelt and that alcohol was determined to not be a factor in the crash. The crash closed portions of southbound I-75 for nearly two hours.

Pierre-Charles has been convicted of shooting Pieper and Veluz during a drug deal in 2006, following a party.

Published reports state that Pieper and Veluz approached Pierre-Charles about purchasing marijuana. The teens reportedly were taken to Trilby in a car driven by PierreCharles, ordered to their knees and executed.

FHP Trooper James ‘Brad’ Crooks Remembered 17 Years Later

You’ve probably driven past the signs more times than you can count and not given much thought to them.

While we might worry about getting pulled over for speeding and other minor traffic infractions, it’s easy to forget that members of local law enforcement agencies put their lives on the line each time they conduct a traffic stop. The “normal” traffic enforcement practice that we all dread can turn tragic in just seconds — as it did in Wesley Chapel 17 years ago — which is why the onemile strip of C.R. 54 on either side of I-75 was named the Trooper James “Brad” Crooks Highway in 1999.

Just before we went to press with this issue (on May 19), the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) posted a reminder of the dangers of traffic stops on their Facebook page with a photo honoring the memory of the late Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper James “Brad” Crooks, 23, who was killed during a traffic stop on I-75 in Wesley Chapel near the S.R. 54 exit on May 19, 1998.

“We are thankful for the sacrifices each of our deputies and other law enforcement officers make daily and honor those who have lost their lives while protecting the citizens of Pasco County,” the PCSO post read. “We are forever grateful for your service.”

According to PCSO and published reports from that day 17 years ago, Crooks and Tampa Police Department (TPD) detectives Ricky Childers and Randy Bell were victims of a shooting rampage — which stretched across three counties — by convicted felon Hank Earl Carr.

Carr reportedly had killed his girlfriend (Bernice Bowen)’s four-yearold son Joey at their Seminole Heights apartment and driven him and Bowen to Tampa Fire Station Number 7 (located at Nebraska Ave. and Hanna Ave. in Seminole Heights). At the station, the boy was pronounced dead. Carr fled, but was picked up by Childers and Bell, who happened to be driving past the station. Carr posed as Bowen’s husband, who had no criminal record, was detained in handcuffs and ordered to explain what had happened.

Published reports state that, after Carr explained that Joey’s death was an accident (saying the boy was dragging an assault rifle that was in the home that went off when Carr tried to take it from him), the detectives took Carr back to the apartment so he could show them what happened.

After confiscating the weapon, on the way back downtown, Carr slipped out of his handcuffs using a universal handcuff key (that he wore around his neck) and shot the detectives with their

own weapons. He then carjacked an auto parts truck and headed north on I-275. Carr reportedly took the assault rifle with him. After the carjacking was reported, an alert was put out about the truck.

Trooper Crooks pulled Carr over in the truck on the I-75 exit ramp for S.R. 54 around 2:30 p.m., reports state. Gunfire erupted and Crooks was fatally shot in the head. It was his eighth month on the job.

PCSO deputies then pursued Carr into Hernando County while exchanging gunfire. Carr eventually was struck by a bullet and pulled into a Hess gas station on S.R. 50 and barricaded himself inside with the station attendant, Stephanie Kramer. He held the hostage

until just before 7:30 p.m., after which he killed himself inside the station.

The deaths of Crooks, Childers and Bell reportedly prompted change within TPD, requiring prisoners to be transported with hands handcuffed behind their backs. Prisoners also are now forbidden from being transported in vehicles without separators between the front and back seats.

A year after the tragic events of that day, the Florida Legislature dedicated one mile of C.R. 54 on either side of I-75 to the memory of Trooper Crooks. Also named for him was a PCSO substation in Land O’Lakes on S.R. 52, the same area in which Crooks worked regularly out of FHP’s Land O’Lakes office.

Shawn Harrison Gives Legislative Update At WCCC Biz Breakfast

If you follow politics, you know that Florida is a little “out there.” So much so that the Florida House of Representatives decided to pack up the 2015 Legislative Session and leave Tallahassee three days early this year due to disagreements over the state budget. New Tampa’s representative in the Florida House is aware of how it looks, but Dist. 63 Rep. Shawn Harrison (R–New Tampa) told the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) during its May 5 Monthly Business Breakfast at the Pasco Hernando State College Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel that he thinks the state House and Senate will be able to resolve their differences and pass a budget during a Special Session of the state legislature that started June 1.

“I can tell you that it’s good to be home (from) Tallahassee,” Rep. Harrison told the WCCC on May 5. “It’s been an ‘interesting’ few months up there.”

Harrison gave a short primer on how the session ended, and the reasoning for heading home early.

“Everything looked like we were going to have a fantastic session and come up with some great things for the folks in Florida,” Harrison said of the $1-billion budget surplus going into the session in January. “But, there became a very heated and bitter dispute between the two chambers about the concept of Medicaid

expansion in the state of Florida.

That caused everything to grind to a halt.

The leadership basically decided we should all go home and cool down.”

Rep. Harrison explained that the House Dist. 63 State Rep. passed a $76.2 Shawn Harrison at the billion budget May 5 WCCC breakfast. and the Senate passed a $80.4 billion budget, the difference being that the Senate’s budget included $4 billion in Federal funding to expand Medicaid coverage, or coverage for the state’s uninsured who require medical care.

“This was a difference in ideology,” Rep. Harrison said, explaining that the state can accept the funding from the Federal government, but that the additional funding doesn’t last past 2016 and the bill then falls onto the taxpayers.

“You hear a lot about the House refusing to take up Medicaid expansion,” Rep. Harrison said. “Not one single legislator in the House or Senate filed a bill regarding Medicaid expansion. The only time that issue ever came up was when it was included in the

Senate budget and wasn’t included in the House budget.” He added, “It’s always been my philosophy that you vote for budgets because of what’s in the budget, not what’s left out of it.”

Rep. Harrison broke down some of the things that the House budget included.

“We had a communications services tax rate cut by four percentage points,” he said. “That’s on everyone’s cell phone bills.”

He also described sales tax exemptions for agricultural items, irrigation equipment, farming equipment, school books and supplies and even college textbooks. He said that the House also added a small business tax holiday for businesses purchases under $1,000, as well as a Fourth of July sales tax holiday for guns, ammunition, camping and fishing supplies.

The budget set a new record for education spending, Rep. Harrison said, noting that the budget had set aside the highest average spending per student in the state’s history.

“We set aside $21 billion for public education,” he said, adding that the average amount spent per student was $7,129, up from $20 billion and $6,937 per student last year. The budget also invested $9 billion for Florida’s transportation network, set aside $742 million into the Land Acquisition Trust Fund (which purchases environmentally-sensitive lands for conservation), invested $480 million for workforce education, $185 million into economic development, put $51 million into the child welfare system and allocated $16 million to the state’s Department of Corrections.

Rep. Harrison said that of the six bills he was allowed to file, four were passed, including HB 305, which seeks to assist property owners with removing unwanted guests. The property owner files an affidavit with the sheriff’s office, which then questions the legitimacy of the guest’s residency. If the person doesn’t have a legit reason to remain at the residence, the agency can charge that person with trespassing.

with you, maybe a boyfriend or girlfriend, but the relationship sours and the other person doesn’t want to leave?”

Rep. Harrison asked. “Right now there are no options besides going through the eviction process. It takes time, it takes money and it’s convoluted. This bill created a simplified procedure for removing unwanted guests.”

He also described HB 309: “Patient Admission Status Notification,” a bill of which Rep. Harrison said he was particularly proud. He explained that if you’re in the hospital for three days or more and will need long-term recovery in medical facility, you can qualify for Medicare.

However, only if you are formally admitted. Instead of patients getting stuck with a huge bill after a month at a recovery facility because they thought they qualified, the bill requires that a notation be made on discharge papers, so patients will know if they qualified.

Although he’s New Tampa’s representative, Rep. Harrison said he also helped sponsor, with Florida Senator Wilton Simpson (R–New Port Richey), a new 10-year pilot program for the Epperson Ranch Development of Regional Impact in Wesley Chapel, where the country’s first Crystal Lagoons mega pool will be built on Curley Rd. “It takes the state development review function and brings it down to the county commission level for approvals to help speed it up,” Rep. Harrison explained. “The state review could take up to two years. We created a pilot for rest of state to see if we can streamline that process and bring the project online faster.”

In addition to talking Tallahassee, Rep. Harrison also expressed his approval of the WCCC’s recent absorbing of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce.

“The merger of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce and (WCCC) is a great thing for our region,” he said.

“Wesley Chapel today is what New Tampa was 20 years ago.”

BOCC Submits ‘Letter Of Interest’ For S.R. 56 Extension Lanes

It’s said that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and the old adage has proven true for the extension of S.R. 56, from where it currently dead-ends at Meadow Pointe Blvd. in Wesley Chapel to its future connection all the way to U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills.

During the May 19 Pasco Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting in New Port Richey, commissioners voted unanimously (5-0) to move forward with submitting a Letter of Interest to the State Infrastructure Bank (SIB) for a loan to help build the 6.7-mile S.R. 56 extension as a four-lane road, as opposed to the already-approved two-lane extension. The fourlane extension is estimated to cost more than $60 million.

Complaints about the funding cut from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT, which gave the current, more-than-$30-million contract for a two-lane extension to Tampa-based Cone & Graham, Inc., in October) prompted action from Pasco’s State legislators to identify a plan to get the four-lane road built for their constituents, without sticking them with the bill.

In April, Dist. 17 State Senator John Legg (R-Lutz) and Dist. 38 State Representative Danny Burgess (R-Zephyrhills) proposed the idea of taking out a low-interest loan from SIB. The catch was that a Letter of Interest from Pasco

had to be submitted by May 29. That letter was officially signed and submitted on May 28.

Commissioners agreed to submit the letter to take out a 30-year, $27-million loan that will be paid back beginning in 2019. Under the current FDOT contract, developers along the extension already are required to cough up the money for the additional two lanes, which would be built sometime in the future (when traffic and development warrants them), as well as donate the land needed for construction. The county wants the developers to pay higher mobility fees to help pay back the loan. Details haven’t been finalized, but the city of Zephyrhills also has stepped forward to pay 10-percent of the total loan, as well.

“The details haven’t been ironed out, yet,” says Dist. 2 Comm. Mike Moore, who represents Wesley Chapel on the BOCC. “But, I’m confident that county staff and the developers will work it out.”

Comm. Moore says that he is 100-percent for the four-lane expansion and had no reservations about voting to pursue the loan.

“It will definitely bring an economic boost to the area,” Comm. Moore says.

“It’s a regional road, not a local one. In addition to Wesley Chapel, it also will help out Dade City and Zephyrhills, tremendously.”

KONA Swim Bike Run Burglary Thwarted By Martial Artists

KONA Swim Bike Run on S.R. 56 is known for its high-end bicycles and other triathlon equipment. A Tampa man recently stole a vehicle to load up bicycles he was trying to steal from the popular fitness store (now located less than two miles north of its original New Tampa location on County Line Rd. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), just before 7:30 p.m. on May 7, David Robert Menzies, 30, of Tampa, parked a Jeep that he was test driving from the Ferman Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Tampa dealership (located on S.R. 54 in Lutz) behind KONA. He had left his driver’s license with the dealer, who reported the Jeep stolen after Menzies went missing with the vehicle for several hours.

PCSO reports that the store was closed and unoccupied at the time of the burglary, so Menzies walked around to the front and broke a glass window with a cinder block, causing at least $1,000 damage to the store. Once he was inside, the arrest report says that Menzies gathered several triathlon bikes valued at a total of $15,000 and began loading them into the Jeep.

While he was loading the bikes, the report says several witnesses (who had been attending a class at Hammerfist Krav Maga next door during the bur-

glary) approached him. The witnesses, who were actually taking a Krav Maga (the Israeli Armed Forces self-defense system) class at the time of the burglary, were able to detain Menzies until PCSO deputies arrived a few minutes later.

“We were very surprised that someone would choose to burglarize us with the Hammerfist guys next door,” says KONA owner Bruce McCarthy. “Jason (Carrio, the co-owner of Hammerfist) actually was able to subdue (Menzies) until the cops showed up.”

McCarthy says that in the surveillance video, Menzies can be seen waiting in the Jeep for employees to leave, before he began trying to smash the window.

Menzies actually had come by the store the day before with a friend, McCarthy explains. “He said that his buddy was thinking about getting a bike. (Menzies) just wandered around the store the whole time, apparently casing the place.”

McCarthy says that Menzies tried to load up to two Quintana Roo bikes, each valued at more than $5,000, into the truck before he was subdued by Carrio.

Following his arrest, the report says, Menzies confessed to the crimes. He was charged with grand theft of bicycles, business burglary with forced entry and grand theft auto.

At our press time, he remained in the Land O’Lakes Detention Center in lieu of a $6,000 bond.

360 Dermatology & Ambay Plastic Surgery — A Unique Dermatology Office!

Wesley Chapel and New Tampa residents in need of a general or cosmetic dermatologist have access to a unique option in the Seven Oaks area. 360 Dermatology and Ambay Plastic Surgery, both located in the Summergate Professional Center (behind Sam’s Club, off S.R. 56) are two medical practices that operate under one roof.

The businesses combine the talents of the husband-and-wife physician team of Aparna Ambay, MD (Doctor of Medicine), a Boardcertified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon, and Raj Ambay, MD, a doubleBoard-certified plastic surgeon. (Note-We’ll refer to them as “Dr. Aparna” and “Dr. Raj,” respectively, throughout this article to avoid confusion.)

“We’re unique in Tampa,” explains Dr. Raj, “because we’re the only combination dermatology and plastic surgery office in the (New Tampa/Wesley Chapel) area.”

This special arrangement allows general dermatology patients to have in-house access to a plastic surgeon for any reconstructive procedures, such as after a skin cancer is removed. It also allows patients who are looking for cosmetic dermatology services access to a wider variety of procedures to enhance their individual looks (more on Dr. Raj and his services below).

“We’re all about building relationships, not transactions,” adds Dr. Aparna. “This is our core focus, and allows us to spend plenty of time with people so no patient is ever rushed.”

The beautiful office of 360 Dermatology provides a relaxing setting for patients in need of diagnosis and treatment of conditions of skin, hair or nails, or complete skin and skin cancer screenings/exams, mole checks and skin surgeries, as well as chemical peels, Botox and other dermal fillers and other non-surgical options for your skin.

Dr. Aparna earned her M.D. degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia in 2002, then served an internship at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and dermatology residency programs at the Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, WI, and at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

She also holds a Dr. Aparna Ambay of 360 Dermatology.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the University of Georgia in Athens (awarded in 1990), and both MBA (Master of Business Administration) and MPH (Master of Public Health) degrees from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, awarded in 1995. She was named one of America’s top dermatologists by the Consumers’ Research Council of America in both 2012 and 2013.

Patients are sometimes referred to Dr. Aparna by their primary care physicians, or may come in because they are concerned about their skin, whether it’s a spot, lesion, or

just the tone or texture of their skin.

“Dr. [Aparna] Ambay has an awesome eye,” says practice manager Patti Lovell. “She knows before she (performs) biopsies which spots are going to be problematic.”

Dr. Aparna is an expert in Mohs surgery, a specialized technique in skin cancer surgery that helps to minimize the removal of healthy tissue around the site of skin cancer. According to the practice website at 360DermatologyTampa.com, Mohs is still, “the gold standard treatment for specific skin cancers.

In this technique, progressive layers of cancer tissue are removed, processed in an on-site laboratory and read by the Mohs surgeon, all at one appointment.”

While at the Univ. of WI, Dr. Aparna was taught at the school where the Mohs technique was created in the 1930s and has been perfected over the past several decades.

Mohs surgery is performed in the office of 360 Dermatology, where Dr. Aparna maintains a laboratory that is CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments)-, Stateand Federally-certified for the procedure.

Patti says the practice treats patients of all ages, including children, and tells of a success story where a child had been to several dermatologists to treat a rash on her face.

After seeing four other doctors, the child’s parents brought her to Dr. Aparna, who diagnosed the problem and gave her treatment that helped right away.

In addition to general dermatology, cosmetic dermatology is also offered at 360 Dermatology. “Dr. [Aparna] specializes in giving clients a natural, younger look,” says Patti. She explains that if you want to improve the look of your skin, come in for

a consultation, where you will be presented with many options, including Botox and other dermal fillers, plus chemical peels, and laser rejuvenation. A $50 consultation fee is charged, which is applied to the cost of any treatments a client chooses. Dr. Aparna looks at each person’s goals and unique situation and recommends the best procedures for their individual situations.

“Our patients are our priority,” says Patti. “Our staff is friendly, and we always have smiles on our faces.”

“We’re happy to be here,” agrees medical assistant Kareena Phillips, who works for both the dermatology and plastic surgery practices and currently is attending medical school at the University of South Florida, “and we want our patients to be, too.”

Marsha Patrick, who lives in Meadow Pointe, says she first went to see Dr. Aparna two years ago, when she was frustrated with the wait times at another dermatologist. “I’d have a 10 o’clock appointment and might still be in the waiting room at 11. So, I was ready to try someplace new, and I’m so glad I did.”

Marsha found 360 Dermatology through her insurance company, and chose it based on its great location in close proximity to her home. She says, “From the first time I walked in and noticed the ambiance, I thought, ‘This is really nice.’ The staff is super, super friendly, and Dr. [Aparna] is the best dermatologist I’ve ever been to.”

She explains that Dr. Aparna found a tiny, freckle-sized spot on her foot that Marsha had never even noticed. It was removed and biopsied, and found to be precancerous.

takes the utmost care to make sure you’re comfortable, that you know what to do once you leave the office, and then they call you to follow up,” says Marsha, who says she also sees Dr. Aparna for cosmetic dermatology.

“She doesn’t try to sell you anything, but if she suggests something, you should listen.

Everything she’s suggested has been wonderful.” She adds that she now uses the Obagi skin care system, and has received Botox and filler treatments at the office.

Ambay Plastic Surgery

When a 360 Dermatology patient is concerned about what he or she will look like after a dermatological procedure, such as after removing a lesion on the face, the plastic surgeon (Dr. Raj) and dermatologist (Dr. Aparna) will consult with the patient together in one office – literally in the same room at the same time. “We don’t have to send people out for consultations,” he says.

Dr. Raj earned his D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree from the Northwestern University Dental School in Evanston, IL, in 1993, and his M.D. degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, in 2002. He then completed a General Surgery residency at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education (in Rochester, MN) in 2005 and was a research fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 2005-07, where he studied drug development for cancer treatments. Two years later, he completed a residency in Plastic Surgery, also at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, and then studied microvascular reconstructive surgery at the Univ. of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in 2010.

Dr. Raj also studied Executive Education for Board Development at both Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. He also is Board-certified Dr. Raj Ambay of and licensed to practice Ambay Plastic Surgery. dentistry, and uses his medical skills as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as a dental officer and also as a medical officer, providing general and trauma surgery in a combat support hospital.

You Do The Dishes Keeps Kids Busy & Creative All Summer Long

It seems unusual that kids would be excited about doing the dishes. After all, it’s a household chore, and unless there’s an allowance or some TV time involved, who wants to do that? That’s not the case at You Do The Dishes, where kids can take part in creative camps (see below) all summer long, learn new art techniques and even put their own artistic touch on all kinds of pottery.

Located just a few doors down from our previous office in the Shoppes of Amberly shopping plaza on Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms (15-20 minutes from most of Wesley Chapel), You Do The Dishes (YDTD) is a “paint your own pottery” studio owned by Pebble Creek resident Cindy Kozlowski that just celebrated its 18th anniversary. The studio also features a great specialty coffee and tea bar that serves light desserts, as well.

You Do The Dishes is a great spot for birthday parties for all ages, wedding showers and even business “team building.”

Cindy says that the studio started as an idea from her daughter Julie, who was visiting Miami with a friend and went to a similar studio on South Beach. The two left discouraged that the studio didn’t ship finished pieces of pottery, since they take a few days to dry.

“On the way back to Tampa, they got to brainstorming about how they’d do it, and how it would be better,” Cindy explains. The idea of shipping for out-oftowners who were visiting and adding a

coffee bar were tossed around.

“It started as a dream and evolved from there,” Cindy says. “We knew we had to do it before someone else did.”

For a flat rate of $8 per hour (which includes materials, although prices are lower during different specials; see below), YDTD patrons get to create their own works of art in an intimate environment.

“You come in and the pottery is white and ready to paint,” Cindy says. “You get to paint it however you’d like. Then we glaze it and fire it. When it comes out of the kiln, it’s just like a regular dish.”

She continues, “We have all kinds of tools to help you — stamps, stencils, sponges, tape and more. We also have a lot of samples to look at, as well as people who will help you one-on-one with different techniques. You can come in and take your time. The pieces make unique gifts, too, because they can be personalized and then actually used.”

Pieces range from traditional cups, plates and bowls to more versatile offerings that even can be used as different storage containers. Salt & pepper shakers, business card holders, lawn gnomes… if you can name it, you can probably paint it.

“We’re always trying to get new pieces in,” Cindy says, adding that most finished pieces can be picked up within 24-48 hours.

the heat outside — and from the TV or computer screen — as well as a great way for them to flex their creative muscles.

You Do The Dishes marketing director & art educator Herb Pinder, who says he used to come to the studio as a patron, teaches the summer classes. A Wesley Chapel resident, Herb says that he used to spend a lot of time in South Tampa selling his own artwork, but would stop at the studio to grab a cup of coffee and relax on his way

home. He started as YDTD’s bookkeeper and then began teaching classes.

“The whole idea behind the summer camps is to expose the kids to different artistic media,” Herb explains. “They all like pottery painting, but we try to show them watercolors, drawing, soft pastels and clay sculptures, too.”

Herb says that he has been an artist all of his life, but decided not to pursue a degree in it because he didn’t want anyone

But, he says that he later went back to school and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then at the University of South Florida, where he discovered his love of printmaking.

Herb says that many of the kids who were first introduced to art during You Do The Dishes summer camps also have gone on to study art in college.

“They’ll come in after graduating from an art school and you’ll just barely recognize them because it’s been so long,” Herb explains. “But then, they start telling you their stories about being in school in Brooklyn.

That’s my whole purpose. Each year, I try to make (the workshops) more intriguing. You

can see the kids’ artistic appetites grow.”

Herb adds that during camp, he’ll explain each artistic medium, demonstrate it and then let the kids apply it.

A beautiful five-bedroom/three-bath home on a New Tampa golf course is an idyllic situation for many new Florida residents. The best part? Although the beach is just an hour away, you congratulate yourself on picking this new house that sits high and dry, far away from both coastal and inland flood zones. Well, think again.

“The entire state of Florida is prone to flooding,” says Bill Sullivan, owner of the New Tampa location of GreatFlorida Insurance, which offers “Insurance for Floridians by Floridians” and has been in business statewide since 1991. through the intricacies of insurance — sometimes even before the purchase of a home — by pointing out structural features that enhance the safety of a home and can benefit the homeowner in insurance fees.

One major piece of advice that clients need to hear is the importance of flood insurance, Bill says, something few newcomers understand or feel is important.

“Even if they don’t expect to be washed out to sea, even just a couple of inches (of water in their homes) can cause terrible damage,” Bill explains. “The amount of people who do not understand that their homeowners insurance does not cover that — the absolute shock and surprise when they put in the claim and realize it’s not going to be cover — that’s not when you want to find that out.”

Heading off that sort of problem before it gets to the stage of “reactionary” insurance is what someone like Bill can do.

Summer Movie Season Set To Heat Up New Tampa Theater Screens

The sun is out and it’s already hot...way hot. So, even though the calendar only says mid-May as we go to press with this issue, it must be already summer here in the Tampa Bay area. While it’s scalding outside, your local movie theater is always cool — and so are the movies headed to New Tampa’s Muvico Starlight 20 movie theater (located off Highwoods Preserve Pkwy.) and the Cobb Theatres Grove 16 (located in The Grove shopping plaza off Oakley Blvd.) in Wesley Chapel. “Pitch Perfect 2” (Now showing, PG-13): The follow-up to the 2012 original that hit a high note with “Glee” and other high school musical fans, finds the Barden Bellas in an international a capella competition that they have to win to get their groove back. Comedic actress Elizabeth Banks (“Zack & Miri”) directs Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.

“Entourage” (Now showing, R): It’s been four years since we last saw young movie star Vinny Chase (Adrian Grenier) & co. on HBO. Well, they’re back, agent Ari (Jeremy Piven) is still annoyed and series creator Doug Ellin is the director.

“Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron” (Now showing, PG-13): Joss Whedon directs Marvel’s finest, together again to battle Tony Stark’s rogue smart robot. Ironman, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and the Hulk star in what our editor Gary Nager is calling, “the best superhero movie to date, although with a story line only fellow Marvel geeks can truly follow.” After raking in $191.3 million its opening weekend (the 2012 original grabbed $207 million) the film is sure to smash records on screen and at the bank.

“Tomorrowland” (Now showing, PG): “Imagine a place where nothing is impossible,” says George Clooney in the trailer for Disney’s new flick about a teen and a jaded, older inventor who travel to a fantasy world in their collective memory. Far out. Brad Bird directs his first live-action picture since 2011’s “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.”

“Jurassic World” (June 12, PG-13): The park is open. But, not for long. In “Jurassic World,” scientists genetically engineer the resurrection of the dinosaurs and stick them in a theme park, surrounded by humans (read: food). Oh, and they invented a big, extra-smart T-rex. Nothing could ever go wrong. Wink, wink. It’s not the original, but it’s still Jurassic Park. I plan to go. Funnyman Chris Pratt (“Guardians “Mad Max: Fury Road” (Now showing, R): It’s not Mel Gibson and it’s not the of the Galaxy”) carries the classic ‘90s franchise reboot, set 22 years after the events ‘80s, but Mad Max is back and played by Tom Hardy (Bane from “The Dark Knight of the original, directed by Colin Trevorrow (“Safety Not Guaranteed”).

‘Summer Movies’

The animation studio regularly plays with audience emotions and this time, these tech wizards have created a film that literally is about the emotions inside our brains, voiced by Amy Poehler (“Parks & Recreation”) and Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live”).

“Ted 2” (June 26, R): At this point, you either love director Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”)’s brand of humor or you hate it. But, everyone loves fuzzy, foulmouthed, pot-smoking teddy bears, right?

The sequel finds the title character fighting for his right to make a baby with his wife, using Mark Wahlberg’s... well, you can probably guess where this is going.

July Releases

“Terminator: Genisys” (July 1, R): The Governator (“Ahnold” Schwarzenegger) told you he’d “be back,” and he returns in multiple forms in a franchise reboot of the fight between the human race and self-aware computers and cyborgs, with enough twists and timetraveling turns to make Einstein go crosseyed. “Come with me if you want… to be confused.”

“Minions” (July 10, PG): Let’s be honest, the best part of the two animated “Despicable Me” movies were the strange, adorable, little yellow minions. Well, now they’ve got their own origin story about working for super villain Scarlet Overkill.

Sandra Bullock (“Miss Congeniality”) plays Scarlet and Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”), who plays Scarlet’s also-evil husband, lend their voices.

“Ant-Man” (July 17, Not Yet Rated): Comic actor Paul Rudd (“Anchorman II”) suits up as Marvel’s Ant-Man, in a suit that makes him microscopic and as strong as the Hulk when he’s small. It’s Marvel. It’ll be fun. Peyton Reed (“Yes Man”) directs.

“Trainwreck” (July 17, R): Amy Schumer, who has proven her comedic chops with her Comedy Central sketch

TV show “Inside Amy Schumer,” makes her starring, big-screen debut as a woman who’s really good at being single, but feels butterflies when she hangs out with sports doc Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live”).

“Vacation” (July 29, R): The last time Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) went to Wally World, he punched Marty Moose in the nose and shot the late, great John Candy with a bb gun. He’s not going with the Griswold family this time around (that we know about), but grown up Rusty (Ed Helms) and his family are. Don’t worry, Chevy and Beverly D’Angelo are confirmed cameos in the film directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, the guys behind “Horrible Bosses.”

“Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” (July 31, PG-13): Tom Cruise keeps going on impossible missions full of insane stunts that he won’t let a stunt double do.

This time, he straps himself to the outside of a plane as it takes off. No, really, he did it. For real.

August Releases

“Fantastic Four” (August 7, PG-13): Marvel’s cosmic-powered foursome (photo) is back to round out the summer’s superhero smorgasbord, with different takes on Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing (all played by different actors than in the two previous FF films) and even a different origin story, directed

by Josh Trank (“Chronicle”).

Hunter’s Green Country Club Is NOT For HG Residents Only!

By Gary Nager When I moved to Hunter’s Green in 1995, Hunter’s Green Country Club (HGCC) was already a few years old and the centerpiece of an exciting new community in an area which was first referred to as “New Tampa” only a year or so earlier.

My family first bought a membership at HGCC in ‘95 and it was always a beautiful, 6,900-yard, Tom Fazio-designed golf course with “environmental integrity.” (Note-Fazio has 40 years in the golf course design business, and his website, FazioDesign.com, says that “no living golf course designer has more courses listed on Golf Digest’s top-100 courses” than Fazio does).

The club also features an elegant clubhouse, a great pro shop, driving and practice area, wonderful golf pros (led by head golf pro Doug Brown, plus an amazing array of 17 championship-caliber Har-Tru (clay) tennis courts and lots of outstanding benefits and amenities for its members, only two miles south of the Pasco County line.

The only problem back then, in my opinion, was that it never really had great food, at least not the kind of top-quality chef-created cuisine you’d expect at an upscale, private country club inside an elegant, gated community.

Well, if it’s been a while since you’ve checked out HGCC, you owe it to yourself to check it out again — even if you don’t live in the Hunter’s Green community!

Holiday Inn Express Coming To S.R. 56, Near Ice Rink As work continues on the Florida Hospital Center Ice complex (see page 4), there could soon be even more construction along Cypress Ridge Blvd. (off S.R. 56, near I-75) in Wesley Chapel, as a Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites (photo, right) will border the ice rink to the south, right across Cypress Ridge Blvd. from the existing Hampton Inn & Suites.

According to documents filed with Pasco County, the four-story, 13,036-sq.ft. Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites will be built on 2.57 acres in the Cypress Creek Development of Regional Impact (DRI), located at the northeast corner of the S.R. 56 and I-75 interchange. The hotel will feature 82 rooms, 83 parking spaces, a patio and a pool.

We’ve also heard that a Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott is planned for the south side of S.R. 56 (also east of I-75), although no further details were available at our press time.

Wesley Chapel Chamber Calendar Still Busy

The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) has held several free events since our last Wesley Chapel issue and among those that we were able to attend was the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Wesley Chapel location of Tampa Bay Jaw & Facial Surgery (29164 Chapel Park Dr.; photo, right), on May 28.

The office combines the oral surgery talents of Dr. Michael Barbick, MD, DMD (who has an existing location on N. Dale Mabry in Carrollwood), and his partner at the new Wesley Chapel location, Dr. Neeraj Nagella, MD, DMD, DDS. In addition to getting to meet the doctors and their wives (Ashley Barbick, who designed the practice’s beautiful new office, and Swapomthi Nagella), there was outstanding food from local favorite Ghada Jadallah of A Dash of Salt & Pepper

If you haven’t been checking out the amazing Karaoke Contest every Thursday for the past nine weeks at City

Grill (located in the Village Market Plaza), you’ve missed some amazing singers and a great competition, and 18 people have advanced to the semifinals, which begin on Sunday, June 7, 3 p.m. (a day or two after you received this issue in your mailbox; see pg. 42).

Our Exclusive 2015 Wesley Chapel Hurricane Preparedness Guide

Hurricane season 2015 officially started on June 1, but the Atlantic basin already has seen one named storm, so it’s important to stay prepared throughout the season. Here’s our exclusive guide to staying ready for the summer (and fall) storms in Wesley Chapel.

On May 27, NOAA (the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) released its official predictions for the 2015 Hurricane Season, which runs through November 30. NOAA scientists predict a 70-percent chance of a “below-normal season,” with 6-11 named storms, 3-6 of which potentially could become hurricanes, with 0-2 of those potentially becoming major storms of Category 3 (sustained winds of more than 111 mph) or greater.

“A below-normal season doesn’t mean we’re off the hook,” says NOAA administrator Kathryn Sullivan, Ph.D., referring to the 1992 season in which only seven named storms formed, yet the first was Andrew – a Category 5 major hurricane that devastated South Florida. “As we’ve seen before, belownormal seasons can still produce catastrophic impacts to communities.”

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center’s lead seasonal hurricane forecaster Gerry Bell, Ph.D., says that the presence of El Niño (a periodic weather pattern that results in more dry air in the Atlantic and Caribbean basins) is expected to help suppress the number of named storms this season.

“El Niño may also intensify as the season progresses, and is expected to have its greatest influence during the peak months of the (hurricane) season,” Bell says. “We also expect sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic to be close to normal, whereas warmer waters would have supported (more) storm development.”

hurricane season. However, it only takes one storm to have a devastating effect on an area, and the first step to weathering the storm is preparation. Knowing whether or not your home lies in a known flood plain or is regularly subject to severe winds is a must.

Gimme’ Shelter, Wesley Chapel!

According to Pasco County Emergency Management (PCEM), this season, there will be eight hurricane shelters in the Wesley Chapel area, and it’s important to know which ones are closest to your community, especially if your home is not equipped with hurricane shutters or there isn’t enough time to board up windows when a storm kicks up quickly.

Wesley Chapel’s shelters include Double Branch Elementary (31500 Chancey Rd.), New River Elementary (4710 River Glen Blvd.), Seven Oaks Elementary (27633 Mystic Oak Blvd.), Thomas E. Weightman Middle School (30649 Wells Rd.), Veterans Elementary (26940 Progress Pkwy.), Watergrass Elementary (32750 Overpass Rd.), Wesley Chapel High (30651 Wells Rd.) and Wiregrass Ranch High (2909 Mansfield Blvd.), which also serves as a special needs shelter.

FEMA recommends that the kit should include (but doesn’t have to be limited to) one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, a three-day supply of non-perishable food with a can opener, a battery-powered weather radio, flashlights with extra batteries, a First-Aid kit, dust masks, an emergency whistle, as well as moist towelettes, large and small garbage bags and plastic ties for sanitation and basic personal hygiene supplies.

Other recommended items include at least a two-week supply of prescription medicines and glasses, pet supplies (if necessary), family documents (proof of insurance, IDs, passports, bank

records), cash, sleeping bags or blankets for each person and board games to keep kids busy. Remember, if the power goes out, it’s back to the Stone Age when the batteries for those high-tech electronics run out.

And, don’t forget a large cooler, which is perfect for stockpiling ice (at least for a little while) during a storm. If you have the means, a generator with a few gallons of gas, which also can come in handy for your vehicle, can also power basic electronics if the power remains out for an extended period of time.
