Community Comes Together For Family Of Kids Killed In Fire

By Michael Smith There is an old saying about how the worst of events can bring out the best in man’s nature, and if that is in fact the case, then the Wesley Chapel community has revealed its true nature in coming together to aid one local family in the wake of a devastating fire that claimed the lives of two young children.

According to published reports, the fire broke out in the Loury Dr. mobile home of Anise Borque and James Moore at around 6:40 p.m. on March 15. The couple lived in the home with their four children — twins Walker and Hunter, 10, Mackenze, who was 9, and 8-year-old Austin.

Hunter and Mackenze both suffered from cerebral palsy and were confined to wheelchairs.

That evening, Anise was home with the children while James, who served as handyman for the trailer

park, was working in another unit four doors down from the family’s Mackenze and Hunter trailer.

Exactly how it started is still a mystery.

But, Anise would later tell investigators that she was on her way back to the trailer when Walker ran up to her and told her that there was a fire. He and Austin, who had been playing in the yard, were safe, but there was no sign of Hunter and Mackenze, who had been inside a bedroom at the rear

At about that same time, Bill Heisler, who lives next door to the trailer park, says he was working in his yard when his dog started barking and he saw another neighbor running towards the mobile home community.

Instinctively, he ran over, too, and as

they got closer, they saw the smoke and flames coming out of the family’s trailer, along with Anise, who was screaming that her babies were still inside. Heisler and other neighbors joined James in trying to get to the See “Family” on page 6.

Taste Of New Tampa Has Wesley Chapel Flavor Corrections An editorial by Gary Nager This weekend (Saturday-Sunday, April 9-10), the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) will host its fourth annual “Celebration of the Arts” at the Shops at Wiregrass mall. Although the “Celebration” has had other titles, this successful weekend-long event (and others) once again shows how far the community we call Wesley Chapel has progressed.

There’s no doubt that both the Chamber and the Shops (see page 13) have been a big part of giving Wesley Chapel it’s identity and I give kudos to the mall’s upscale stores and impressive marketing department for always finding ways to draw people, not only from Wesley Chapel and New Tampa, but from Lutz, Land O’Lakes and areas even further from Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and S.R.s 54 and 56, with unique events.

As unique events go, however, few in our area have ever equaled the success of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s annual Taste of New Tampa®, which was not only again tremendously successful in its 18th year on March 20, but also had a lot more of a Wesley Chapel edge to it than in most previous years (not including the years it was held inside the Meadow Pointe and Seven Oaks communities, but those were several years ago), as an estimated crowd of more than 3,000 people flocked to the football field at Paul R. The under-construction Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel was one of the two major sponsors of this year’s Taste of New Tampa®. about a mile south of the Pasco County line on BBD. In addition to the closer-to-WesleyChapel locale, this year’s Taste’s two largest sponsors were the under-construc-

W ESLEY C HAPEL Pasco Sheriff Bob White Announces His Retirement Pasco County Sheriff Bob White announced in March that he plans to retire from the office in order to spend more time with his family.

According to a letter written by Sheriff White that was released on March 16, his retirement will become effective as of April 30. In the letter, the 60-year-old White says that he feels he has achieved his goals of making the Pasco Sheriff’s Department one of the best in the state and providing better service to the citizens of Pasco County.

White also says in the letter that he had originally planned to run for a fourth term in office after his current term expires in 2012, but that his priorities had changed after the birth of his granddaughter 18 months ago.

“I can’t give you my total commitment; therefore I can’t stay in office,” he wrote.

Gov. Rick Scott will appoint a replacement for White, although it is not certain when that will happen. A Sheriff’s Office spokesman said that it will most likely be within the next couple of weeks. At our press time, nine candidates had filed applications for consideration by Scott, including several

News Briefs current and former employees of the department.

Also, in what was considered by some to be a politically motivated move, Sen. Mike Fasano (R-New Port Richey) said that he might consider a run for the Sheriff’s Office in 2012.

There also was speculation that White may be in line for an appointment by Scott to a new position in Tallahassee, although rules say that he will have to be retired for at least six months before accepting any new appointment.

Iorio Breaks Ground For New Area Fire Station In her last official visit to the New Tampa area as mayor, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio recently helped break ground for the city’s newest fire station and also cut the ribbon on an updated children’s play area at the city’s recreation center at the New Tampa Community Park.

Iorio, along with outgoing Tampa City Council member Joseph Caetano and officials from Tampa Fire Rescue, turned over the first symbolic shovels of dirt at the new station, designated Station # 22, at the 8-acre site at 10871 Cross Creek Blvd. near Morris Bridge Rd. The city purchased the property for

$750,000 in 2007 and received a $1.6million American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA) grant in 2009 to pay for the construction of the new station. Capt. Lonnie Benniefield, who is assigned to Station #21, says that, depending upon the location of the call, the time of day and traffic conditions, it can take 18-20 minutes to respond to calls in some cases, especially if the firefighters from Station #21 are busy and assistance has to come from another station further away.

“This new station will give us the capacity to get to most areas a lot quicker,” Benniefield said.

Benniefield also noted that the new station will provide mutual assistance to Pasco County fire units in the Wesley Chapel area.

The new 8,660-sq.-ft. station will be very similar in appearance to Station

#21, with three drive-through equipment bays flanked by work and living quarters for the firefighters, but its design also will include a number of environmentally-friendly features, such as high-efficiency lighting, solar-powered exterior lighting and water heating, an energy-efficient HVAC system and the use of recycled materials throughout, according to Michael Boutros, general manager of the Pillar Construction Group of Clermont, the company contracted by the city to build the new station.

Boutros said that actual construction was to have commenced by April 1, and the contract calls for a 240-day construction schedule. — MS

“Family” Continued from page 1 children, but the fire was too hot for them to get in by the door, so they began tearing away at the wall of the trailer where the children were with whatever tools they could find, and even their bare hands. By the time they broke through, however, it was too late. Both of the children had succumbed to the smoke and fire.

Heisler, who says he was so intent on trying to get to the children that he didn’t even notice that he had received burns himself, says that the members of the close-knit community immediately began rallying around the devastated family. “(Jimmy and Anise) are good people, and good people are hard to find,” he says. “Besides, we have children, and I know that if my house was on fire, Jimmy would have been trying to crawl through my window to get my kids just like I was trying to crawl through his window to get to his.”

Heisler adds that another example of the good impression that the couple made on others was evident the day after the fire. Once again, he was in his yard when he saw a man drive up to the burnt-out trailer and get out of his car.

Thinking at first that the man was just another rubbernecker, Heisler asked the

man if he could help him. That’s when the man told him that he had met Jimmy and Anise at a yard sale the couple had held about a month earlier. He said he had heard about the fire, but hoped it wasn’t the couple’s children who had been killed.

“Then, he pulled out his wallet and said ‘All I have is $20, but I want to do something to help them,’” Heisler says. “He had only probably met Jimmy and Anise for a minute or two at the yard sale, but they made such an impression on him that he came back and gave me his only $20.

That just goes to show what kind of people they are.”

That $20 also became the foundation of a trust fund that Heisler and his wife Becky helped to set up to assist the family. To raise even more money, Heisler also helped to arrange a benefit concert at the Trinity Church of Wesley Chapel, where church members donated the proceeds from their weekly fish fry to the family. The church also held a yard sale to benefit the family last weekend, while the Tampa Palms Chik-fil-A restaurant donated the proceeds from a special “Spirit Night” to the family and another local bar, The Hawg Pound, also held a concert there.

“At a time like this, you really can’t do anything to take the pain away, but you can show them Christ’s love,” Trinity pastor Dave Huff says.

Walkathons Raise Funds For ACS & Southeastern Guide Dogs

By Michael Smith There are a lot of things a person can do to help out their favorite charity, like donating money or organizing fund raising events, but one of the easiest is something that most people already do every day — walking.

For example, in the coming weeks, thousands of local residents will be putting on their walking shoes for the American Cancer Society (ACS)’s annual “Relay For Life,” an overnight walkathon. Every year, the Relay helps to raise money for and awareness of cancer-related issues, research and treatment, and this year there will be several Relay events held all around our area, including two in Wesley Chapel — at Wiregrass Ranch High on Friday, April 29, at Wesley Chapel High on Friday, May 6. Those events will both begin at 6 p.m.

During the Relay, teams made up of people from local businesses, schools and other groups spend an entire evening taking laps around a track, while also participating in games, contests and other activities throughout the night. There also are special ceremonies for those who have fought cancer and won, and recognizing those who have lost the battle.

According to Lisa Stoessel, who is the ACS community representative for the Wiregrass and Wesley Chapel High Relay events, 10,000 people are expected to participate in Pasco County’s Relay events this year, and those events are expected to generate more than $500,000 for ACS programs, much of which will remain in the local area.

As important as the money is, however, most people participate in the Relay for Life because they or someone they know has been affected by cancer.

That is the case with Jen Gaete, who is captain of the team from Veterans Elementary, which is participating in this year’s Wiregrass Ranch Relay. Gaete says that she takes part in the Relay partly because her sister was successfully treated for ovarian cancer, and also in honor of her uncle, who died from brain cancer in 2006.

“I do it for them, but I’m also inspired by all those other people that I’m able to help,” Gaete says. “It’s something I believe in, and it’s a passion that comes from the heart.”

Also taking part in the Relay at Wiregrass Ranch High is senior Melinda Lu, who is organizing an effort to collect hair during the Relay for Locks of Love, which provides wigs and hairpieces for young cancer patients who

have lost their own hair to chemotherapy. Lu plans to donate her own hair at the event, and asks that anyone who would like to donate theirs to come to the Relay between 6 p.m.9 p.m. on April 29.

Great Events Continue To Bring Crowds To Shops At Wiregrass!

“It was an early 1800s bracelet that was accented with human hair,’’ Eddie says. “It was kind of morbid but at the same time really fascinating to see one that well preserved and in good shape.’’

In order to keep current on market trends and values, the brothers occasionally host their own road shows throughout the state and also attend numerous trade shows.

“The trade shows are important because they give us a better idea of the value of certain items,’’ Joe says. “We can do our research and go by our current sales but it’s very helpful to be on the road with several other vendors and see what

their idea of market value is for different items.’’

Of course, there are a plethora of products available these days that claim to whiten your teeth, freshen your breath and give you a dazzling smile, but the best way to a truly beautiful and healthy set of teeth is still a good relationship with a topnotch dental professional, like Dr. Nicole Mitchell, DMD. Dr. Mitchell, who opened her office in The Walk at Highwoods Preserve plaza in New Tampa (only 2-3 miles south of the Pasco County line) in November, practices all aspects of general dentistry, such as exams, cleanings, extractions, fillings and more, but she also specializes in cosmetic procedures, too, including straightening, crowns, implants, bridges and veneers, all of which can help give you the movie star smile you’ve always wanted.

Dr. Mitchell is a native of Connecticut who moved to Tampa while she was in junior high. She attended Gaither High and then the University of South Florida, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, before entering the U.S. Army and receiving her DMD degree and advanced training as a dentist while stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. After the Army, Mitchell returned to the Bay area, where she worked at a group practice for another five years before striking out on her own.

A self-admitted “people person,” Mitchell says she originally took up dentistry because she liked the idea of combining her love of science with the opportunity to work with her hands while helping to improve her patients’ lives. “For me, it’s the perfect combination of art and science,” she says. “I love what I do, and I’d do it even if I

While it may be the general dental work that is the meat and potatoes of any dental practice, Dr. Mitchell says, to her, the cosmetic aspect of her practice is, “the fun stuff.”

“That’s because it is the most rewarding, for both the staff and the patients,” she explains. “Changing a person’s smile makes a pretty dramatic difference in the way they look, and how they feel about themselves, too.”

However, Dr. Mitchell and her staff also emphasize the importance of regular maintenance and preventive care, too, “above and beyond what a lot of other dentists do.” That’s because a healthy mouth is not only important for a nice smile, but it can also help to prevent a variety of other health problems throughout the body.

In fact, Dr. Mitchell says, one recent study even indicated that the plaque that builds up on teeth is the same as the plaque that builds up in arteries, and showed that there is a link between periodontal disease and hardening of the arteries, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness and other issues.

Despite all the advantages of receiving regular dental care, however, many people are still afraid of going to the dentist. That’s not the case with Dr. Mitchell’s patients, however. Buying A Home Is Still Within Reach, With The Right Help

By Melissa O’Brien Over the past decade, the buying and selling of homes has transformed from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market. If you’re looking for a home, this can work in your favor, but it is still important to have someone there to help you navigate what can be a very complicated process. There definitely are deals out there and, if you have a credit score of 620 or higher and a steady income, you can qualify to purchase a home. But, it’s important to find the right person to look out for your best interests and guide you into making this important life decision.

“Home buying is about educating clients about the process and negotiating for their needs,” says Phillip Paul, a real estate agent with Buyers Home Store, located on S.R. 54 in Lutz.

“Right now, everyone knows that it is a buyer’s market. My job is to assess what my clients’ wants and needs are and to make the process of purchasing a home smooth and seamless.”

Phil, who has worked in the real estate industry since 2004, says there are many great deals out there, especially in the Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Land O’Lakes areas. Many of these deals can make it so that a homeowner’s monthly mortgage payments are less than what a

monthly rental payment would be.

“There is a type of loan called a USDA (rural development) loan that is applicable in areas like Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Land O’Lakes,” says Phil.

In most cases, people can end up in a home with a monthly mortgage that is less than a monthly rental. This loan is applicable in any area deemed rural as a result of the U.S. Census.”

As you may know, the U.S. Census was retaken in 2010, so the results for these areas may be different (not rural) in the very near future. So, Phil says, “Now is the time to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Phil adds that because of the high number of short sales and foreclosures in the area and across the country, many people are looking for deals in older homes.

“People are looking at these options as a way of getting a great deal on a home,” he says. “While this may be true, clients need to realize that

short sales are anything but short and can take months, even years to close.

There also may be bank issues with foreclosures that I can help homebuyers navigate, whether it’s the home not being up to par on inspection, titles not being cleared for closure or other important issues.”

Phil began his career in real estate after graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Residential Housing Design and Property Management. He then obtained his Master’s degree in Architecture from Florida A& M University, also in Tallahassee. He moved to Tampa in 2004 and began working for Pulte Homes, where, in his first year, he sold $15.7 million in real estate properties. Then, in 2010, he began working for Buyers Home Store, a real estate agency with representation in Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee counties.

“Working for Pulte, I was able to see the construction and builders side of things,” says Phil. “Like me, most of the people at Buyers Home Store have had experience in the construction/ building industry. That benefits our clients, because we all know the ‘sticks and the bricks.’ And, we can decipher the true value of a home for you.”

For Gino Maggio, working with Phil has made his family’s dreams come true. “It was time to buy a house,” says Maggio, who lived for years in an apartment with his wife and 5-year-old son.

Wesley Chapel Elementary Students Learn All About Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Riding bikes is a great way for families to have fun and spend time together outside. However, riding a bike can also be dangerous and many children are injured each year while riding their bikes. The good news, though, is that many of the worst injuries can be prevented by the use of a bicycle helmet.

That was the lesson learned by students at Wesley Chapel Elementary (WCE) during a recent physical education class, when they were visited by Terri McConomy and Melissa Edlin from All Children’s Hospital, who head up the “Safe Routes to School” program for Pasco County.

“If even one student remembers to wear their helmet, than I feel that what we are doing is successful,” Edlin says. “Injury prevention starts with education and this type of workshop is a lifelong lesson that students will remember.”

“Safe Routes to School (SRTS)” is a federal program designed to make it safe, easy and convenient for chil-

dren in grades K-5 to walk and bicycle to school. The program encourages children to walk and/or ride their bikes to school in groups accompanied by adults, which gives them a chance to practice pedestrian and bicycle safety skills under adult supervision.

According to the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, almost 400,000 children are treated for bike-related injuries every year in the U.S. Also, nine out of 10 bike riders who die in crashes are not wearing helmets. It has been found, however, that wearing a bike helmet can lower the risk of brain injury by up to 88 percent.

Unfortunately, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida is the second worst state in the nation for bicycle fatalities. Florida had 125 fatal bike accidents, or 6.82 per million residents, in 2008, when the national average was only 2.35 per million.

“It’s alarming to think that almost 400,000 kids end up in the hospital every year because of biking accidents,” says WCE physical educa-

tion specialist Chris Gorman. “We want our students to be safe when they are exercising and hope we can help them make good choices so that they will live long and healthy lives.”

During their safety lesson, the students answered questions and participated in an egg drop demonstration, which simulated what can happen to your skull and brain if you take a fall wearing your helmet and the consequences if you are not wearing one.
