ISSUE 39 EDITOR’S NOTE This lock down period came up at a peak time for a lot of us. Maybe we were planning to travel, get married or move into our new house.Very bad timing for sure. In the beginning, I didn’t think there was such a thing to be considered: dedicating an entire day to taking care of myself.

With the help of this lock down - as negative as all what is happening in the world might be, I quickly understood what it meant to, ‘self-care.’

The general idea of ‘self-care’ is to do specific things that relax you or evoke positive emotions within you. For example, if you really enjoy drawing that could be the day you take up a new sketch or finish one you started. If you find joy in reading, this is your time to delve into a new title or even ask friends which ones they recommend. The important idea behind this writing is to reassure those who may have wanted to take a self-care day to simply go for it! One of the main reasons we may get burnt out is because we do a million different things in the span of a day or even a week.Your world will still spin if you take 24 hours to do other, more relaxing things or even nothing at all. Trust me: many of my self-care Sundays have been spent napping!

From turning off/silencing your phone to enjoying a day indoors or outdoors, none is set to a standard on what is considered self-care for you. Even if the classic bubble bath is your idea of taking care of yourself, may you find positive emotions to get you through another week.

A life dedicated to diving and photography. He is a partner and managing director of Sundivers Ltd. Mauritius.

His passion started at his youngest age as a diver and his successful career has been going on for years and years. We had the chance to have a special interview with Gerald Rambert in this issue. You can learn more about him in this interview.

Newstyle : Gerald, before talking about photography, I would like to know more about you. Can you tell us about yourself? Who’s Gerald? (Last name, first name, age, place, profession...)

Gerald : I am Gerald Rambert , 40 years old. I grew up in the north of the island and then moved to the west coast when I started working as a diving instructor for Sundivers ltd. Today, I am a partner and managing director of Sundivers and we offer scuba diving courses and exploration dives to tourists in Mauritius throughout the year.

N : When did you decide to start a career in photography and set up your own business? What inspired you?

G : I was first a diver before becoming an underwater photographer. The passion for it arose when I started taking souvenir pictures of tourists. As time went by, I learned to improve myself by following my mentors and spending hours on the internet reading about different lighting techniques.

N : Can you tell us about Gerald’s Photography and your team?

G : I work alone most of the time. Taking pictures of wild animals sometimes requires diving alone, not scaring the animals away.

N : What kind of services do you offer to your customers?

G : I run 2 to 3 underwater photography workshops a year in different parts of the world. We all get together on a dive boat and sail for 10 days to some of the most pristine dive sites in the world in quest of the perfect snapshot. I help my dive partners improving their underwater photography skills and teach them how to think fast underwater, since a fish is not going to pose for you. I also shoot videos for different productions mainly in Mauritius. I have worked a bit on commercials, local and foreign productions, National geographic and CNN. N : How did your interest in filming begin?

G : My interest started mainly when my shooting started to improve. I love challenges and it’s not just about the photography but also the difficulties that come with it... the underwater world is full of surprises and you have to be constantly ready to react to any kind of situation.

You have to jam and play with the elements and your instincts are constantly on alert. You must also create a connection with the environment and the animals in it.

N : What is your greatest success so far and why?

G : There is no special event as such that I would describe as my greatest achievement. For me, it’s the whole journey that counts the most. I started from nothing and only hard work and perseverance have made me what I am today.

N : What are the benefits of being an award-winning photographer? Can you tell us about the awards you have won? Is there an award that has special meaning for you?

G : I have won many underwater photography competitions, including a silver medal at the world championship, but I stopped competing some time ago because the beauty of the art is taken away in a competitive environment. Today, I am more in the sharing of process thinking than in the philosophy of competition. For sure, this has its advantages and opens doors when your name gets known. But I don’t have to prove anything anymore. I know what I’m doing and I’m confident in my skills.

N : What do you expect from your clients for a successful collaboration?

G : I only expect happy customers. I will do my best to provide the best possible service and make things happen. This is how you can expect them to use you again in the future.

N : What advice would you give to photographers who wish to pursue a career in photography?

G : There is no such thing as knowledge! Learn as much as you can and every photographer has his or her own approach. Follow as many photographers as you can, help as many as you can and let your feelings guide you... you will eventually find your own style.

N : How do you feel about social media? How can our readers follow you?

G : Social media is great for sharing and finding inspiration. Try to follow as many photographers as possible and share your work. G : I would like to take a greater interest in underwater filming, which is a very difficult field. Working with a large film crew gives you knowledge and ideas to create the most beautiful shots. In our current context, I also want to raise awareness through my images and maybe a documentary and make people understand that we have an incredible world hiding just below the surface of the ocean, and that it must be protected at all costs.

N : What are the key points you pay the most attention to before accepting a new project?

G : The key point in accepting a new project is above all the safety and difficulties of the environment. The water skills of the team and the models also count a lot.

AND HIS LOVE FOR BRUSHES He is an international makeup artist. He has had the opportunity to work in the world’s largest cities, including Paris, London and Milan and is very proud of his origins and his native island, Mauritius. This is Cédric Lanappe. A name that is today very well known to many Mauritians, from here and elsewhere but also, a name known internationally.

His world is made up of brushes and make-up products. At the age of 25, he already has a full and colorful life. He is an international make-up artist, as well as Senior Artist and Resident Trainer for MAC Cosmetics. Cédric Lanappe, national Makeup artist for one of the biggest luxury House in the world now lives in Paris. He started at a very young age – 13 years old around himself and officially as a professional for magazines, editorials, and fashion shows etc at the age of 15. He featured “Nounous Paris” just before his studies in Paris in one of the largest school, being a make-up academy. After that, Cédric became a senior artist and resident Indian Ocean trainer for MAC Cosmetics.

For the young man, a real make-up artist needs to understand how to bring out the beauty of each model while respecting the image and vision that the designer or artistic director wants to bring out to the show or photo shoot. The only way to do so, according to Cédric is by helping him in his vision and supporting him in creating the image he wants. “We often spread a message through a single click to allow us collaborate for an incredible result in the end,” he mentions.

What he loves most in the beauty and fashion realm is editorials and fashion shootings.

Cedric mention that, throughout his career, he often managed to get Carte blanche with his team in order to express their feelings. “I also really enjoy my own shows. Being the first to do a makeup show in Mauritius, I can tell you that I am very proud to be able to promote my art and vision in front of people,” he says.

Each woman is unique for the young professional. Make-up is something that enhances the beauty element. Working with models or clients allows Cédric to transmit his good mood and vision of beauty while respecting their identity. He is convinced that make-up is, not only a way to help people look better, but mainly helps them in feeling better. “It often gives a woman confidence when she’s wearing make-up. It helps to sublimate the woman and camouflage what she doesn’t like so that she feels better about herself,” confesses Cédric.

His most memorable event? Kenzo Gold fashion show at Paris fashion week. Yesss! Our beauty magician had such an amazing and breath-taking path in his pockets. “I’ve also been working with Sachin for almost 8 years now and we’ve always worked on different projects together since my very beginnings. Sachin remains a public figure that everyone dreams of working with as a youth. And over the years, he has become a really good friend... very open to criticism! He has always been able to support me in order to give Models : Vanessa Veerasamy the best of myself.”

INTERVIEW WITH RAVI BHUSHAN We met with fashion designer and photographer Ravi Bhushan while the world was being locked down. Newstyle magazine really wanted to know more about this talented character, and he wholeheartedly agreed to talk to us. Encounter...

Ravi Bhushan is 47, born and raised in New Delhi, India. He decided to move to our Paradise Island, together with his family to work in the textile industry until he managed to become a permanent resident of the Island. Graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in New Delhi, Ravi is currently working as a design manager in a reputable company in Bangladesh and designs for European and American fashion brands. In addition to that, Ravi also works in photography, which at the time being is his second parallel profession. In order to learn this art and understand its basics, Ravi took basic courses at the South Asian Media Institute in Pathshala, where he also helped famous photographers and learned the basics of this area. “When I finished my studies, I always wanted to pursue my career as a photographer. But at the time, it was a very expensive training to take and I wasn’t financially ready to pursue it,” he explains. While studying design, Ravi met a few photographers who came to his institute to take some fashion pictures, and watching them with their equipment and lights, he was fascinated by this art. This is how he decided to take up this art and learn it, before starting to practice photography as a hobby. “I work alone most of the time if the project is related to fashion, beauty or portraits. But it all depends on the size and requirements of the project, so I hire professionals to help me. When it comes to weddings and events, I have my own team,” explains Ravi.

The photographer is more into fashion and portrait photography. This is his main strength. However, he also does weddings and events. “Apart from that, I also offer my services in pre-production and post-production. Editing is one of the main services I offer to my clients, even if I didn’t take the picture in the first place. Printing and framing should also be part of the services I provide, but this is very selective,” he says. According to him, time management is the most important asset. Ravi makes sure to understand the client’s requirements, the size of the project and the terms of payment. His greatest success so far is to

have been able to photograph the 14 finalists of the Lux Channel I Super Star competition in Bangladesh in 2014 as an assistant photographer. “This is one of the biggest events in Bangladesh to hunt beautiful women like America’s Next Top Model does. The prestigious beauty contest champion has the chance to be the “face of Lux in Bangladesh”. Photographing them was a real feat,” he proudly says.

A clear understanding of the work project that will be well documented and communicated is what Ravi expects from his customers. For the photographer, clients need to be clear about what they expect from a photographer before they hire him or her. The client needs to see and understand the work and capabilities of a particular photographer to ensure that their expectations are met. Moreover, he explains the importance of social media which plays an important role in today’s life. An online tool that allows people to discover and learn new information, share ideas, interact with new people and organizations. A tool which has made communication much easier. “It gives you a wider platform across the world. My readers can connect with me and also access my work on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and my personal website ( www.raviclick.com ) where I present some of my selected work and where my clients have the possibility to upload their photos through password-protected folders,” His advice to photographers who wish to pursue a career in photography is to first, learn the art well and understand the industry. Buying a camera is probably easy these days, but handling it requires skill. A lot of knowledge before you can get into the business is much needed. According to Ravi, one has to be very specific about the type of photography he wants to do, because the field is very broad and there are many different types of photography.

As this is a parallel profession to mine, Ravi intends to devote more time to this activity and have more national/international projects. “I am going to set up my own high-tech studio in Mauritius to help me improve my capabilities and at the same time meet the expectations of my clients further afield,” relates our artist.

In line with its annual tradition, the Backstage Lounge Bar offers support to Mauritian artists through the Backstage Awards. A not-to-be missed event for our young people, this is a great opportunity to reward the best talents of the year.

This yearly event organized by the resto-pub of the Hennessy Park Hotel, aims at rewarding young local talents.

With nominees being specially hand-picked, several categories are chosen and the public is welcome to vote for their favourite talents at the event on Facebook.

These categories include the Best Designer, Best Musical Artist, Best Makeup Artist or Best Model.

The winners in each category are based on the public’s vote and a panel of professional artists. In case of a tie, the public’s votes only are taken into account. Since 2014, this flagship event is presented by the best animators and of course, rhinestones, glitters and trophies are part of the game.
