PROFESSIONAL MAKE-UP ARTIST “Makeup is a special kind of art”

Everybody loves to attend great events. This is a fact! However, Bringing out the beauty within us is Akshay Goteea’s job, a professional make-up artist since a while. It is with passion that he tells us about his job. Express interview in Vacoas with the make-up artist, the brush specialist to whom the models owe their radiance on the steps.

He has just turned 26 and yet he has already been halfway around the island. Make-up artist Akshay Goteea has something to look forward to. Currently a full-time public officer, makeup is for him a part-time job, which he fully enjoys.

10 years back, Akshay did not know anything about makeup.

That was totally an unknown subject for the young man. However, watching YouTube videos and playing with his mother’s makeup kit on his sister’s face has set the mood. “it definitely brought out my inner talent and love for makeup. It was then that I realised that I wanted to pursue this field,” he relates.

There are make-up artists whose work can stop you dead in your tracks, and Akshay is one of them. He never follows the rules, and rarely colors within the lines (although, of course, he can, and is exceptionally good at it). He is an artist who embraces colour with surrender, who can paint a graphic eye as if it was nobody’s business, and who also knows when to let go.

This is a real sign of talent, when an artist knows when to stop, or what to leave out, and Akshay is amazing at that. Akshay is also a lot of fun to follow on Instagram and Facebook. On Instagram and Facebook, you will be flooded by his incredible work, image after image of the most sublime looks.

An internet thing. This is how to sum up Akshay’s debuts with makeup. “It was all about the internet especially YouTube and of course the basic makeup kit of my mom,” he relates. He still remembers doing his first client’s makeup, who was so satisfied. This satisfaction boosted the young man like never. A way for him to enhance his makeup skills and fully live his passion as a makeup artist. For Akshay, makeup is basically used to enhance a natural beauty. This is the main reason why he always tries to keep his makeup look closed to a natural finish one. “As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect!” says the young man. In order to improve his makeup skills, Akshay tries different inspired makeup looks and keeps on practicing so as to make the whole look flawless. His favourite makeup look ever created? “Definitely the classic Black Smokey look with a nude lip!” he confesses.

Grand winner of the Backstage Awards 2019, Akshay Goteea was more than surprised by this amazing announcement. “I didn’t expect to win the award that night! The videos stories on social media says it all,” he tells us, eyes full of stars. His plans after winning such an amazing title is quite a simple one.

ASPIRE to INSPIRE. He wants people to have the guts to live their dreams and continue to work hard on different makeup concepts and trends. Furthermore, his biggest motivation is to see the happiness on his clients’ face after a makeover. “This really brings a smile to my face.” But what about working on any massive event as a makeup artist in the upcoming days or years? “At a local level, it will definitely be the Hennessy Fashion week as it is the only fashion destination in Mauritius and at an international level, for Lakme or Paris Fashion week,” Not to stop there, our amazing mate also aims at working with some big international names like Kaushal beauty , Nikkietutorials, Huda Beauty.

We also requested some little makeup tips from Akshay. Some go-to cosmetic products for any situation according to him: Mascara, lipstick, BB cream and blush! (Thank you, dearie, we shall fully consider this). If a lot of people seek inspiration from different mediums, Akshay at his end is on the lookout of YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest. What sets him apart from other makeup artists is his flexibility. Akshay’s got a lot on his mind. Among some of them are found another makeup show at Hennessy Park Hotel, be among the judges for the upcoming Hennessy awards night or any makeup show and being able to collaborate with famous makeup brands. “Why not have my own makeup channel and makeup studio?” he adds.

Through Newstyle magazine, Akshay aims at gaining much more visibility. “Newstyle being an online and an international magazine, it can create more exposure on social media and in the fashion industry,” A piece of advice he would give to the younger generation: “Always listen to your heart and believe in yourself. Work hard to achieve your dreams as it takes a lot of silent sacrifices to reach your goals. There will be criticism from people but don’t make it your weakness. Use it instead as a strength to improve yourself and do what makes you happy,”

Friday January 10, 2020, Newstyle magazine had the pleasure of being featured in a fabulous fashion show at the Hennessy Park Hotel, hosted by the fashion designer Akhil Tooree. It was a celebration of fashion and of course, style! Many local models both new and established were featured on the runway, all beautifully wearing makeup from Nushra Niamut and Lovania Veerapen, hairstyled by Junaid and photographed by Sachin Sagar.

Akhil Tooree is a name that we no more must introduce. We caught up with him on the Fashion Show to pick his brain on what it takes to bring together an event like this, and his own personal views on fashion and fun. Aged 25, Akhil is a part-time educator at DAV Rose-belle College.

“Enchanted Angels” was for the young man one of the most empowering shows as he was truly inspired by many different features of international shows such as the Secret Victoria Fashion Show. The show is made up of gorgeous models wearing lingerie and creative make-up that are very trendy nowadays. The event involved a wide range of models such as Ornella Lafleche who represented Mauritius on an international Miss Universe 2019 platform, Gyanisha Ramah who represented Mauritius at miss earth 2019, Amanda Wong who represented Mauritius at miss eco teen 2019. Also, some other models such as Camille Achard, a French international model and Independent models like Stacy Woo, Onezya Chung, Tanya Kimberly Suenf and Emily Bauluck.

The focus of the fashion show was not only on the clothes, but also to showcase the women and put them on the runway in the most beautiful designs. Not everyone is a typical model shape and size and Akhil really wanted to celebrate that by showing lots of different types of models walking on the runway. Moreover, Akhil’s open-mind and creativity really paid off once again.

He put a lot of emphasis on Trend fur fabric which is now the trendiest abroad. “I have also used transparent fabrics such as tile lace veil to make exquisitely detailed dresses. For the showstopper’s outfit I made a wing consisting of golden and black feathers,” he explains.

MISS EARTH MAURITIUS 2019

Miss Earth Mauritius talks about being a beauty queen Gyanisha Ramah is 2019’s Miss earth Mauritius and in this exclusive interview with Newstyle magazine, we got to chat with the pretty and eloquent beauty queen. She was a guest at Newstyle, and we got to talk about how the journey began from the young girl going on an errand to becoming a Miss.

It was indeed an interesting conversation with the eloquent beauty queen who proudly embraced the fact that she always considered herself as a queen and always had that attitude. Gyanisha Ramah, aged 22, comes from a small village known as Fond du Sac. She currently holds a Degree in Law and Criminal Justice and a Diploma in Travel and Tourism. Professional model at Gold Models and passionate volunteer in social work, the young lady just launched an association named “Zero Pollution” together with her best friend Pankaj whose goal is to protect the environment. Moreover, she points out having an amazing and interesting hobby: Crafting. In the same line, she also has a small custom craft business named “Out of the box fairyjars”. A real all-rounder! Hardworking, fun loving, humble, passionate and friendly are the words that best describe her. Gyanisha always had a queen’s attitude that has to sparkle at all times, not just when she is on stage...She was the girl who would always looks good while wearing her enthralling smile. Self-esteem, confidence, down-to-earth, grace, reflection, respect, trust, intelligence, poise, balance, grace, commitment and determination are qualities that she believes to always display.

As an Earth Ambassador, she always had that supportive attitude before joining the contest. Gyanisha participated in many activities such as tree planting, environmental discussions, beach clean-up and collecting abandoned cigarette butts, etc. These attributes have made her different from others.

the top 10. “During the trip, I understood that it’s not just about the crown and the scarf, but about yourself, ready to make a difference. Jerry Nayna and Manav Heerooa are my gurus who always push me to go higher and shine brighter. I was also inspired by Kirty, the former Miss Earth Mauritius. I followed her journey from the beginning until when she went to the Philippines to represent Mauritius. She is a real inspiration for my participation in Miss Earth Mauritius,” she recalls.

Our beauty does not keep any moment of disappointment.

She did not have any during her trip. She describes herself as someone who does not give up easily no matter what. “I am a person who respects my commitments, I am determined to succeed, I embrace change for the better! I always manage my priorities and my time well,” she says. Her most memorable time of this adventure is the whole trip itself. Taking the first flight of her life to attend an international environmental conference in Reunion Island with the other participants, making her family proud of her on coronation night, being showered with love by the children at her environmental conferences in some schools was for her a real blessing. According to her, it is important for everyone to understand that true beauty is first and foremost an inner beauty! No one should see themselves as not having perfect physical characteristics.

“You don’t need to be accepted by others; you just need to accept yourself because not everyone will see your true beauty. Personally, everyone is beautiful in their own way,” she confesses. Her success is something she owes to her mother and sisters and “the man of her life” who always had her back. Three important persons she describes as The blessings of her life. “They are the ones who has supported me in everything I do, picking me up every time I fall, bringing joy to my soul, calming all my inner fears and encouraging me to achieve my goals and so much more! I am truly grateful to have them in my life,” says the young lady.

This year, for Gyanisha will be full of surprises, more environmental activities, more commitment for saving our planet. And this is something which will be everlasting for her! We only wish her the very best and await the next episodes.

Since Gyanisha was a little girl, she always watched the ladies win crowns and represent Mauritius at an international level. This is how she realised that she had to be there. However, she was always unwilling and insecure about entering contests because of her teeth which were not perfectly aligned, and she had to wear braces. In 2018, she saw the cast of Miss Eco International. It took her days to think about whether she should go or not. She finally decided to go to the casting and was selected in

Recently, we were lucky enough to meet Melissa Sendeck, a lovely model. We met a real lady who wanted to share her experiences with Newstyle magazine. It was during the Model of the month contest launch that we had the chance to meet Melissa. Special guest of this issue, she took part in the question and answer game with all the professionalism and naturalness that characterizes her.

Could you please introduce yourself?

Hello, I am Melissa Sendeck, age 21. I live in Albion and I currently study management at the University of Mauritius. This is the last year of the course.

Tell us about that passion you have for the fashion industry.

It all started when I was very young. I remember coming home after high school and the only thought I had was Top Model USA. I would sit for hours watching episodes even though sometimes I watched them already. To learn how to “flirt with the camera”, how to pose, etc. Everywhere I would go, I would look at myself in all the mirrors and play with my eyes. I would try to smile with my eyes.

Dad always said I was crazy. It was my childhood dream to become an international model. When the cameras are in front of me, there is a real relationship. This is my happy place.

Tell us about your first steps in modelling.

The very first step was when I participated to the Elite Model Look Mauritius 2018 casting. At that time, I was among the six finalists. It was a great experience and it brought me to the competition. Since then, I decided that if I want things to be done, I need to work for it and go get them myself.

How have your experiences in this field been so far?

Before joining Elite, I had about three photo shoots and after doing it, I started to get more people from the fashion industry who wanted to work with me. Of course, the gearing was higher and the sessions were more challenging. My second time on the runaway was last year for THE AFRICAN MARQUIS fashion show where I was more relaxed, thanks to the intensive training I had with Gabriel Froid. But I think I will always have that feeling of excitement and adrenaline when I am on the runway.

Since then, I became THE FACE and the ambassador of THE AFRICAN MARQUIS brand. So far, the photo shoots I have done have been various, with different concepts. I like to try new things and get out of my comfort zone.

Your first big fashion show as well as your first big fashion photoshoot ?

My very first time on a runway was for Elite Model Look Mauritius 2018. I was so nervous, and I was literally shaking, but when I stepped on the runway, the fear changed into adrenaline. My very first big photo shoot was for a glamorous concept at the Long Beach Hotel where I had to interact with dogs like Dobermann and Dog de Bordeaux. It was a very enriching experience, but delicate because animals react differently in front of the cameras.

What do you think this title of “ Model of the Month “ by Newstyle magazine will bring you?

I was very happy and honoured when they chose me to enter this contest. Winning this title will only be positive for me, bringing new opportunities. It was a great experience. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me, especially my teammates Akhilesh Ramkurrun, Amirah Sheriff, Gabriel Froid and many others.

How do you plan to enjoy this title in the coming days/ months/years?

If this title opens new doors for me, I will certainly make the most of it and keep gaining experience and working on myself to be a better model.

What does your family think of this choice of setting?

My family and friends are very supportive. They always encourage me to do my best and to stick with it. Especially two friends and colleagues, Gabriel Froid and Akhilesh Ramkurrun, who always push me out of my comfort zone.

My parents are also very understanding and supportive.

Do you have any other hobbies outside of fashion?

Modelling nourishes my soul, but I also love nature, hiking and discovering new places. During my free time, I like to engage in arts and crafts. I also like to volunteer at Caritas Lakaz Lespwar which is located in Solitude when the opportunity happens.

Any upcoming projects?

My next project is in progress, I would like to experience the Hennessy Fashion Week 2020 as a model for different brands and designers. I might also take part in an international modeling competition to happening in Malaysia where I will be representing Mauritius on the platform, but I’m still waiting for a confirmation. The national director, Gabriel Froid, and his team are working hard to make Mauritius proud.

FITNESS ENTHUSIAST

The fit and fab Joe-Ann Chavry reveals her fitness talks a bit about herself in this exclusive interview with Newstyle magazine. Her social page describes her as a business developer, a baker, entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast. And between all these, she manages to look fit as a fiddle, all geared up to take on the world epitomising today’s modern woman. We find out what keeps her going in this tete-a-tete.

Joe-Ann Chavry is an owner and baker at “A Cup of Joe”. Real CrossFit lover, she started to actively practice this activity 6 months ago. During the day, our beautiful lady works in a software company. We asked her how she got started with fitness.

When she looks at herself, she sees someone who tries to push her limits instead of a fitness model. She confesses that she did not always have the body she actually has. “I first began exercising and going to the gym since I was a little overweight during my childhood, teenage years and early adulthood,” she relates. Her choice to lose some pounds comes up after trying different outfits which did not properly fit her. A waste of time she says. “Throughout the years, fitness gradually became something I was more and more interested in,” Improvement is what Joe-Ann likes the most about being into fitness. And this involves both mental and physical abilities to do things that she could not previously do. The daily progress of bettering oneself while training at a time is also her biggest accomplishment at the fitness level, but mainly a series of regular accomplishments more than one big thing.

We wanted to know about the best way, according to Joe-Ann to get started into the fitness modelling industry. She is categorical that trying to reach out the photographers directly and putting oneself on the map is the best way to gain visibility. A typical day for Joe-Ann? “Wake up around 5.45 – 6 am, Get ready for work, prepare and/or pack meals I will be having during the day - I try to leave the house knowing ahead of time what I will be eating. Get some (read a lot) of coffee to kickstart the day, head to the office, where I am all day. Around 4 pm head to the box for training. As from 7 pm sort myself some dinner, and from then on work on my baking business/ orders/ attend to messages and Bedtime: Around 11 – 11.30 pm,” she relates. It is well-know today. A lot of us do not have much time during the day to work out. In such a busy world, it is getting more and more difficult to find a proper schedule. For those who want to burn major calories in a short amount of time, Joe-Ann strongly recommends the “METCON” workout, which is basically an interval style training conducted at varying intensities to optimize your metabolism for more fat burning post workout. “Most Crossfit workouts are Metcons,”

With proper workouts generally come proper meals. A clean and simple diet with some protein powder is, for our lady the best way to gain lean muscles and lose fat. We also guess that cravings form part of any so-called diet. As some might say, one needs to be mentally strong in order to deal with junk foods, sweets or salty foods cravings. We are sure that a lot of you can really be motivated to stay on a diet for days, weeks or months but eventually can get really bad cravings and binge on snacks and fast foods. Joe-Ann however admits that she never chooses diets mainly due to her baking business where she is bound to taste different kinds of cakes. “I have a sweet tooth and love good food. The way I generally do is keeping my diet clean on most days, then including a few sweets and pizza for gains here and there! Surprisingly eating lots of fruit usually curbs my sweet cravings these days. I also make myself some healthy and naturally sweet and protein-rich, bites to have on the go,” she tells us. For Joe-Ann, one should have goals and try to nourish and fuel the body accordingly. It is also important to strike a balance that favours the progress, so you don’t end up miserable or having binging episodes. Many of us tend to eat out most of the time and faces many difficulties to know what healthy food to order from the menu. As for Joe-Ann, eating out is something she tries to avoid as much as she can. But when she doe, she keeps it simple with dishes which aren’t too saucy, chooses plenty of salads and veggies, and hunts for lean protein. “It is a bit of a balancing act, but totally feasible,” she says.

She also adds that thinking about resting is really an important tool in anyone’s life. Rest is for Joe-Ann the most challenging thing that she has to deal with in order to stay in top shape. She admits feeling bad whenever she tries to rest.
