D

avid Stafford is one of most sought after stylists in Mauritius. The fashion police is known for being strict but is very much appreciated for his creativity. Well, he owes that to his mother. “I grew up with my mum who was always at the height of fashion.

She was so picky and she rarely found clothes that would suit her taste. So she started sewing her own clothes” he relates.

That is how David Stafford was naturally gifted for styling.

In 2012, he opened a boutique. “My fashion pairings were highly appreciated. Many boutiques started copying the my marketing style. I could not have dreamt of better recognition. Since then, I became a full-time stylist” he remembers. He adds that one does not become stylist simply by dressing up a model or writing fashion blogs.

“One does not wake up one morning and decides to be a fashion stylist! A stylist needs to keep himself updated about the latest trends, what is being done in the fashion industry, the contents of the latest editorials and who are the best photographers and so on. It is only then that he will be able to style properly. Hence, before each shoot, a stylist prepares his moodboard according to the skin

colour, personality, weight and height of the subject. This gives him a better idea of the pairings that is which make-up suits which garment, the jewellery and accessories to be used, the posing techniques and the light which the photographe need to use. The stylist is the master of every shoot” he explains.

According to David Stafford, it is hard to find talented stylists in Mauritius, “My favourite local stylist is Jasmina Ruben. When she is on board for a shoot, you know you will be in for something creative”.

David Stafford has his own style. He opts for an edgy look and asian flamboyant style as in it is common in high spheres of Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan. And if there is one accessory which he always has to have on him, is his shades! “They hide dark circles after having spent several nights out. They allow you to stare and judge others without them being aware of. Sunglasses also allow you to sleep through boring conversations.

Last but not least, they help to protect the eyes” he says candidly.

...its incredible benefits!

A healthy diet is not only made up of fruits, vegetables and less refined foods.

Wheat flour is one such basic food which is rich in fibers, vitamins and minerals.

The dietitian Nirusha Pahladi explains the benefits of wheat flour.

Wholemeal , brown and white flour are among the most common types of flour. Nirusha Pahladi explains that wholemeal is made from the whole wheat grain with nothing added or taken away. Brown flour usually contains about 85% of the original grain. Some bran and germ have been removed. Whereas white flour contains around 75% of the wheat grain. Most of the bran and wheatgerm have been removed during the milling process.

Nirusha Pahladi holds a bachelor degree with Honours in Nutrition from the United-Kingdom. She is now a Registered Associate Nutritionist who is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN) in the UK. Her aims, professionalisms and experiences are to help people to maintain a healthy lifestyle, managing diseases and achieve their life goals in Mauritius. Nirusha’s work combines her commitment to continuous scientific evidence-based research to deliver the most updated nutrition services with her belief that every individual can succeed, be healthy and feel inspired about oneself. Recent years ago, she also gained experience within an international exposure in her expertise in Singapore and now she is a nutrition consultant in Mauritius.

According to research, one of the primary nutritional differences between whole-wheat and white flour is the fibre content. “Dietary fibre has a number of health benefits that is, prevents constipation, lowers blood cholesterol and might even help you lose weight” says Nirusha Pahladi.

Whole-wheat flour also contains several vitamins, including folate, riboflavin and vitamins B1, B3 and B5, “Wholewheat flour provides a nutritional advantage over some white flours due to its vitamin content. Some types of white flour contain lower levels of these vitamins, since the processing involved in making white flour destroys the grains’ vitamin content”. Nirusha Pahladi advises to check the nutrition label to determine if a bag of white flour has added vitamins, and to compare different brands of flour so as to maximize your vitamin intake.

The wholewheat as the white flour contain carbohydrates.

Thus, it has an effect on your blood sugar. “After you eat a meal, your body breaks the carbohydrates from your food into glucose, a simple sugar. This glucose then enters your bloodstream, so it can circulate throughout your body and provide fuel to your cells. The glycemic index, or GI, of a food serves as a measure of how quickly this process occurs” she explains. According to studies, bread made with 100 % whole-wheat flour has a lower GI than white wheat flour. Therefore, low-GI foods absorb more slowly to prevent blood sugar spikes, so it improves satiety for longer and prevent the process of overeating rather than high-GI foods lead to rapid blood sugar spikes that leave you hungry and irritable shortly after eating.

Rolled tofu, green peas and mushroom crepes Duration: 5-10 min • 100 g whole wheat flour • 150 ml milk (skimmed) • 2 egg whites • 1 tbsp mashed avocado • A pinch of salt and sugar • 1/4 cup sliced mushrooms • 1/4 cup grated tofu • 3 tbsp thinly sliced onions • 1 tbsp fresh green peas, steamed • 1 tsp finely chopped green chillies • 1 tbsp olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste Sift whole wheat flour and salt into a bowl. Mix well. In a separate bowl, mix the eggs, milk, avocado and sugar. Fold the flour mixture into the egg mixture. Pour a ladleful of the mixture on to a pre-heated non-stick pan to make thin pancakes. Keep them aside.

Heat olive oil and add the onion and tofu, fry for 1 min, then add mushroom, green peas and green chillies. Fry for 2 mins. Add salt and pepper and fry for another 2 min. Let cool. Spread the filling on the pancakes. Roll them, then place each one on a heated pan and cook it on both sides for 1 min. Serve with tomato salsa.

Ludovic Bégué FITNESS FOR BODY, MIND AND SOUL HARMONY

He is just 20 years old and he is already twice Rodrigues Mens Physique Champion. For two consecutive years, he was qualified for Eric Favre Sports Game. Last year, he participated in Mr Mauritius.

Ludovic Bégué is actually enrolled for a National Diploma in Fitness while working as a swimming coach for Pavillon Swimming Pool in Quatre Bornes.

Sports have always been an important part of Ludovic’s life. It all began with his father. The latter initiated young Ludovic to football. He then joined a football club. At the age of 13, he started jogging, doing pushups, pull ups and crunches with his neighbours. “When I was 15, my best friend took me to one of his friend’s place. I discovered his home gym. We were enjoying ourselves lifting weights. The first time, I lifted a dumbbell, I knew what I wanted to do” he shares.

Ludovic and his best friend then started exercising in a new gym. “I have been training there for about four years now. Today, it feels like a second home

as I spent most of my time there” he says. Ludovic go the gym four to five times a week and practice for two hours a day, “Exercices helps me keep fit mentally and physically. Every time, I hit the gym, I try my best to do a better workout than the previous day. Fitness also helps one to face the ups and downs of life. It also means being sick free”.

Ludovic pratices calisthenics, that is bodyweight exercices. It has been a few months now since he started this workout. “Calisthenics help to master one’s body through coordination, balance, proprioception and self-awareness. These exercices enhance my muscles thus, my body. I love it when people admire me while I am doing calisthenics workout like human flag, muscle ups and so on” he adds. He does atleast one hour of calisthenics workout per day, three times a week. Ludovic Bégué also do stretching for 20 minutes at home and three times a week so as to prevent any injury.

He remembered once suffering from strained lower back due to lack of stretching.

has earned the title of fashionista. The 23-year-old chooses to be unique and spontaneous through her style. Although she is a follower of current trends, she has a preference for edgy styles. “The dresses must be chic at the same time” Sharone highlights.

Her clothes also have to reflect her personality. “My way of dressing then tends to be effortless and gives me a sense of confidence” she adds.

The perfect outfit may be built from a particular pair of heels or a dress. “If I find the item catchy, then everything will revolve around it. The colours and fabrics have to complement to my figure and my personality.

Besides, my favourite colours are burgundy and mustard yellow” Sharone says. Sometimes, she enjoys combining different pieces of clothing or accessories.

However, Sharone says that uniqueness does not always mean extravagant. “Many see me as a fashionista. They praise me for my sense of dressing and I really appreciate that” she enthuses.

Sharone who is holder of a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Law, buys most of her clothes and accessories from online stores. She then takes the time out to style her outfit of the day. “It will also depends on the occasion.

For casual looks, I will buy outfits from our local stores and brands. But I admit that it is difficult to find bold and edgy dresses as I like them” she says.
