Sweetie Ramlagun-Law

I feel empowered when I wear my own creations Nothing comes free and passion is not enough to be successful! Sweetie Ramlagun-Law strived hard to be among the most influential designers in Mauritius. Her creations bring out the feminine hard of women. They will soon be available at Coco Millen in Bagatelle.

Sweetie Ramlagun-Law is one of those who will fight against all odds to pave their way to success. Passion, courage, vision and willpower are her weapons, “Sitting idle and critising what is wrong will lead nowhere. It is better to focus on your capabilities to bring a change”.

As every fashion designer, she also dreamt about having her own line of clothing. And this was one of her biggest struggle! “I am still struggling but nothing comes free”, she says. She participated in the fashion contest Origin Africa Fibre to Fashion 2011 organised in Mauritius

by MEXA, Enterprise Mauritius and USAID. Sweetie Ramlagun-Law was the only Mauritian representing the island. Eleven other African countries participated in this competition, “I have put all my energy in my work and won at national level. It was a starting point but not enough to gain recognition. I worked harder. If you believe in your potential and creativity, nothing can stop you. But you must first learn to know your target market especially in a small island like ours, to be able to succeed”.

Since she was a kid, she always believed she would be a fashion designer. She did commercial studies at college before choosing to study Fashion Design and Textile at tertiary level. She graduated as a fashion designer in 2004. “You do not just become a fashion designer overnight atleast not on an island where once fashion was not a priority. You can have a creative mind but there is so much to learn about fashion. Anyone can create a dress. But you must be able to understand art, concepts, fabrics, patternes, seasons and the list goes on”.

In 2009, she started working on her line of clothing. It was officially launched in February 2011 under the label POSSAL, “POSSAL comes from Pots Sale which means dirty pots in French. I love flower pots and as a kids, I used to play in pots full of soil. My nickname became my label”.

The sexy fashion designer began designing for men and women. But 11

for now, she is concentrating on women’s wear, “It makes me happy”.

By the way, Sweetie Ramlagun-Law enjoys making printed dresses and playsuits with bindings. “They are what I like to wear and design. I feel very comfortable in those outfits. I want a woman to feel confident and feminine when she wears my creations. Besides her feminity oozes out when a woman wears the correct clothes with respect to her body shape and size” she confides.

She plays with cuts and shapes. She can be cubic, abstract, mechanical ou even classic. It all depends on her mood! Her favourite fabrics are silk, cotton, linen, swiss embroidery, printed fabrics and viscose to name a few. She uses also a lot of black, white and nude colours in her collections, “Green is a must have! This season, I am focussing on Iavender, teal and heavy colourful printed fabrics. Each designer has his own identity”. She draws her inspiration from movies, architecture, museums, art movement, churches, history or even car parts, “I often have to restrict myself from being overcreative as I have a target market here”.

Sweetie Ramlagun-Law states that Mauritius has come a long way in the fashion world. Nevertheless, designers are still struggling, “Some will take time to understand the differences between a “modiste” (dressmaker in Kreol) and a designer. There was no such thing as fashion culture few decades back. Things are evolving with the increase use of technology and social media. Many shops are importing clothes from India and China. We designers cannot do so. The young ones are working really hard. But it is not easy with the high cost of production and marketing. It is also a very competitive world. Maybe we can get some textile factories to help them. They should be patient, stay positive and gain experience”.

Amidst her struggles, she has find a near to perfect balance between her work and her married life. She is more than happy with the support of her husband, “I have always loved being independent. I shall always be. Mu husband is very supportive and understands this. He gives me my space and even more when it comes to my work”.

Akhil Tooree, Glam fashion designer

The princ

Akhil Tooree is one of the upcoming fashion designers in Mauritius. With the perfect combination of garments, colours and style, he creates dream princess gowns. Some of them have been worn by the most beautiful women in Mauritius and travelled the world.

He is just 23 years old and is already taking the mauritian glamour world by storm. No, he does not do magic at the snap of his fingers.

He has been striving for the last three years to reach where he is today. And he still has a few glorious years ahead. He is non other than Akhil Tooree. Some of you have heard only his name and seen his work. In this issue, you will learn more about the prince behind those jaw-dropping gowns.

The young man has recently worked on a unique Spring Festival collection. The red, white and golden coloured gowns are featured in this magazine. The images speak for themselves! “My designs have to be breathtaking and eye catching! They are epitome of gracefulness, poise and elegance. They have volume and puff. Besides, circular skirt pattern adds more flare to the finish look of a dress. That is why I love to create princess gowns. And I have just started working on a few mermaid style dresses” says Akhil Tooree. He is more at ease with cutting, drafting and draping dress. His weakness : backless dress!

Though he does not restrict himself to new materiels, he uses mostly tulle and embellishments motifs to build up the magic around his

gowns. Not only that! He is also inspired from the intricate details of indian culture and architecture namely Taj Mahal or even the palaces of Rajasthan. He also draws his inspiration from international fashion shows such as Victoria’s Secret and haute couture shows by Elie Saab, Ralph & Russo, Ziad Nakkad and so on, “I try to learn from these shows so as to keep myself updated with the colour trends and types of materials being used”.

Some of Akhil Tooree’s creations are even based on recycled materials, “It is a challenge to make a dress out of nothing. I remember having work on Gyanisha Ramah’s Eco dress. She is actually one of the participants of Miss Eco International Mauritius 2018 pageant. Her outfit was made from newspapers and old CDs was used as embellishment”.

It was not the first time he worked with recycled materials. He recalls having built a collection of bridal wear from papers and waste fabrics, “Three years back, I chose a field involving elements from graphic designing, interior designing and fashion designing. One day, I had to choose one of those three as the theme for my final year project. So, my dissertation was based on fashion designing and I came up with a few pieces sewn from recycled materials”. And that is how his journey started. He quickly got noticed and made some friends in the industry namely Siddiqua Rujak, Joan Begue, Hans Dax, David Stafford, Davina Boddhun and some photographers as well. He then started to do collaborative photo shoots for example with some veteran designers, Lida O’Reilly and Sanjeet Boolell. “It was difficult to make myself known at the beginning. But aach one of them helped me pave my way to where I am today”.

His life took a new turn on the 24th of December 2016. He participated at a fashion show organised by Sunset Karma, under Vikash Pabaroo, at Domaine Les Pailles, “I showcased my first collection titled Chocolate girls. This night my life changed! Since then, people around Mauritius started recognising my work”.

During these last two years, Akhil Tooree did many shows at the University of Mauritius - Miss University of Mauritius and Mega Show organised by the Rays Club. He appeared again at Sunset Karma’s events during Divali and Christmas festive seasons.

Miss World 2017 was held in China, Miss Asia Pacific international in Philippines and World miss University in Cambodia” he exclaims. He also launched “Akhil Couture”, “I have converted a small space at home into my atelier. I do accept orders for doing wedding gowns, party dress and cocktail dress. I use my own Facebook page and instagram page to showcase my creations”.

For the time being, the ex-student of New Eton College in Rose-Hill, is designing only for ladies, “But soon, I will also do men’s wear”. He will also be completing his last year at the University of Mauritius. Akhil Tooree is planning to have a fashion show at Hennessy Park Hotel, “It is becoming a fashion and art hub! Who knows I may be nominated in the Best Designer category for the prestigious and glamourous Backstage Awards 2018?”.

For Akhil Tooree, alll designers have their own style of working and share different point of views, “The fashion industry is very vast but we are trying to make Mauritius a fashion capital like other big countries. Everyone is bringing in his bits and pieces. Perservance is the key to success. There will be many hindrances on the road to greatness but take it as a challenge and move forward as it will make us more stronger”.

Deena Appadoo

It is a long process to create a collection

It has been three years now since Deena Appadoo made her first step in the fashion designing industry. The young woman likes to experiment with cuts and trends. For now she is focusing on womenwear but is hoping to create a line of swimwear in the near future.

Deena Appadoo is one of the rare fashion designers, who also models for her brand, “Modelling was a part-time job when I was studying at the university. It comes rather easily to me to pose for my brand, Deena A., since it bears my name and my clients tend to relate my designs to my style. I often like to show several ways to wear the same clothers as ‘’outfit-of-the-day’ so as to suggest to my clients that the same design can be worn differently each time”.

Unlike others, she never dreamt of becoming a fashion designer one day, “I chose the fashion field when I started working in the management section for a textile company”. The ex-student of Loreto College Curepipe, did an honours degree in Human Resource Management at the University of Mauritius. She decided to change careers when she was 23 years old. She then opted for a design course at the Fashion and Design Institute at Ébène.

She explains that it was difficult to put in place a proper team to work on the styles and attain the level of quality she wanted. She spent six months alone in an empty atelier building her “dream team” and to learn as much as she could. The first fashion by Deena A. was at a charity event organised by the MRT 9 in February 2016. Deena Appadoo finds design very subjective, “It varies according to someone’s taste and whether there is a market for my style of clothing. In my case, I started with casual chic before shifting to a more resort wear style”.

The fashion designer loves re-adapting trends to match the Mauritian lifestyle and climate. International fashion weeks and travelling are also her sources of inspiration. “I like classic cuts with a twist. I like playing on cuts too while keeping wearable. I also think

people should feel comfortable while being trendy. That is why I focus a lot on details” she shares. Though she chooses fabrics according to the collection she is working on, her favourites are cotton and linen. She also likes printed fabrics but mostly geometric or artsy prints, “My designs have interesting cuts or classic ones with trendy detailing. I like experimenting but without being too avant-garde that the clothes cannot be worn”.

Deena Appadoo is currently focusing on womewear, “I am learning as much as I can to be able to explore different ideas before moving to menswear or kidswear”. She confides having a slight preference for playsuits lately, “They are versatile and easy to wear, that too for different occasions”. It is a long process to create a collection, “A wide range of skills is needed in my case since I produre my designs in my atelier, from pattern-making to sewing techniques”.

She says that there is no lack of talent in Mauritius, “But it is quite a challenging field since the market is small and demanding. I am glad to see so many talented people in Mauritius. I am not only referring to the designers who already made a name for themselves but also when I come across the students’ designs in fashions shows. People need to realise though that beyond the glamour of working in the fashion industry, lies sacrifices and professionalism. It is not only about designing but also doing it perfectly while offering a high quality garment”.

Deena Appadoo has a few projects ahead. One of them include boosting her international clientèle through her website and creating a swimwear line in the near future. The healing power of water

Cécile Jeanson, the French former swimmer for three Summer Olympics, is actually at Long Beach Hotel at Belle Mare for a brand new way of keeping fit. The 35th times France champion, created The Cecile Jeanson Method. It consists of strengthening the muscles and supporting the body in the most gentle yet amazing way. “At the top of my career as a professional swimmer, I had a severe back accident. Darich Bhurtun

We are what we eat Darich Bhurtun is one of the contestants of the first edition of Mr Eco International Mauritius. Since day one, the young man stood out because of his physique. He spends most of his time exercising and sticks to healthy eating.

“Abs are made in kitchen”. Darich Bhurtun adheres to this philosophy for many years now. He quotes Jim Rohn, the motivational speaker : “Treat your body like a temple, not a woodshed. The mind and body work together. Your body needs to be a good support system for the mind and spirit. If you take good care of it, your body can take you wherever you want to go, with the power and strength and energy and vitality you will need to get there”.

The contestant of Mr Eco International Mauritius 2018, describes himself as an active kid when he was around 12 years old, “I had asthma and I had to exercise to be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So I started swimming, running and bicyling. Exercices helped me to keep my lungs in good shape”. His quest to stand out and be different from others grew with each passing year. He wanted to have one of the best body. So he started working out harder. He went to the gym atleast six times a week.

The 24-year old Darich Bhurtun then joined the Special Mobile Force precisely on the 28th of December 2012. “Since I was a kid, I have been admiring Military Sports. They are intense and challenging. I dared myself to do it” remembers the ex-student of James Burty David SSS. He also began practicing scuba diving and a few extreme sports. He is always pushing his limits.

Besides the physical exercices, Darich Bhurtun focuses on eating healthy and follows high-protein diets, “Abs are made in kitchen as we are what we eat. Our body and mind need a healthy lifestyle so as to be able to give the best of ourselves in all circumstances. The fittest individual is not necessarily the strongest, the fastest or the biggest. He may be the one who is healthiest”. He says a healthy lifestyle is also one where we practice good hygiene. It should be our daily routine. “You need to put in some effort if you want to look fit and healthy. Your health is well worth it” concludes the nature lover.
