ALTA’s Own ‘Lilly’ Makes a Racquet This year’s unique fall season exhibit, Scarecrows in the Garden, featured one of ALTA’s own creations at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. From the fabulous Girl Scouts, to the longtime Atlanta traditional look of the Varsity, and the sensational salutes to our frontline heroes, this year’s display with 128 scarecrows was one to behold. ALTA’s green initiative, the use of recycles ten-

nis balls for Lilly’s skirt, was most appreciated and a “smashing” success.

Special thanks to our creative ALTA crew, which included Rita Maloof, Laura Barnard, Barbara Ingram, Joan Marcinko, Tracy Stalling, and Emmy Powell. People throughout the Atlanta area were able to take it all in and see the ALTA Lilly scarecrow during the entire month of October.

On Saturday, November 7, a group of organizations in partnership with One Love Tennis, LLC, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Imagine Advertising, and several local tennis facilities will rally together to raise funds for various charities that are assisting families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rising American Michael Mmoh Chooses Dunlop ATP Tour player, Michael Mmoh (22), has chosen Dunlop and the SX 300 frame as his racquet of choice.

“We’ve worked very closely with Michael over the past few months, and we’re happy to report that he’s beyond satisfied with his SX 300; he feels like it will actively help his game as he climbs the rankings,” said Masahiro Asahino, head of Tennis Division for Dunlop. “Testing racquets is a process with all players. In Michael’s case, he was interested in finding a frame that could make his most powerful shot, his forehand, more consistent. When schedules are posted closer to the start of the season, opponent facility names fill in on the Availability screen showing matches as “vs.” and “at” depending on whether they are home or away. Until schedules are out, only match dates display.

Using Availability in the preseason allows teams to better plan ahead.

The Availability page allows it to be clear if and when there may not be enough players for a particular match by displaying the total of available players for each match.

Availability on mobile devices has greatly improved! Each player has a drop-down to select and save their Availability. Team leaders may enter or change the Availability for any players on their team.

Randy Jackson Nominated to Lead USTA Southern United States Tennis Association (USTA) Southern has nominated Randy Jackson of Fort Smith, Arkansas, to serve as USTA Southern Board of Directors President & CEO for the 202122 term.

Jackson is presently serving a two-year term as executive vice president. Previously, he served as VP for three terms after serving as a director at large. He is currently serving as chair of the USTA Local Play and Competition Committee and previously served as the chair of the USTA Junior Team Tennis Committee. Jackson is a board member of the Arkansas Patrons Foundation and is presently serving as co-chair of the USTA Southern Local Leader Liaison Task Force. Prior positions with USTA Southern include chairing the USTA Southern Volunteer Recruitment and Development Task Force, the USTA Southern Governance Ad Hoc Committee and the USTA Southern Junior Safety Ad Hoc Committee. From 2006-10, Jackson was chairman of the USTA Southern Junior Team Tennis Committee. In 2005-06 he served as president of USTA Arkansas and has since been inducted into the Arkansas Tennis Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile, Brett Schwartz, of Mandeville, Louisiana, has been nominated to the post of USTA Southern executive vice president. He served as USTA Southern VP in 2019-20, secretary in 2017-18 and as director at large in 2015-16.

The members of the USTA Southern Board of Directors will be voted on by the Southern Section’s nine state associations — Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee — for the two-year term beginning on Jan. 1, 2021. USTA Southern is the largest of the USTA’s 17 sections, representing nearly 25 percent of the national membership.

Southern Cares Funds Tennis Industry with $803,800 USTA Southern Responds to COVID-19 pandemic with Massive Relief USTA Southern was concerned about the financial instability brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to provide extra support to tennis industry professionals and volunteers who work in many occupations and live in nine Southern states.

Last April, the USTA Southern Board of Directors voted to fund a new initiative, named Southern Cares. After extensive outreach to the tennis industry in the Southern Section, USTA Southern awarded $803,800 to 917 recipients for an average of $876.55. It is expected the number of approvals and grant funds will increase slightly.

Applications were received from 1,103 individuals and organizations.

Southern Cares offered aid to those who provide tennis to communities within the Southern tennis family and were impacted by COVID-19. The purpose of this initiative was to provide financial support for teaching pros, tennis facilities, tournament directors, league coordinators, officials, community tennis associations, NJTLs, adaptive programs, wheelchair programs, and media who have lost income or revenue due to the cancellation of events and to help defray costs of restarting tennis programs.

The demanding challenge of reviewing and selecting applications fell mostly on the 11-member volunteer board. Additionally, six USTA Southern staffers with specific expertise in the program areas also were assigned to the task of reviewing applications. Further, staff members from the nine state tennis associations within USTA Southern were consulted on the applications.

USTA Southern President & CEO Bonnie Vandegrift said, “COVID-19 has negatively impacted so many in our tennis family, and USTA Southern is very fortunate to be in a strong financial position to help. As facilities are reopening, and tennis has been identified as a safe sport, we are seeing resurgence in play and an opportunity for our community partners to introduce the sport to both juniors and adults alike.” She also added other comments during an interview on the section’s podcast, “Talking Tennis Southern Style.”

“USTA Southern is pleased we have been able to assist so many in the tennis industry in the nine Southeastern states with this Southern Cares project,” USTA Southern Executive Director & COO John Callen added. “Tennis is rapidly picking up new players to our ‘COVID-19 safe’ sport and one that adds years to our lifespans. By helping our industry stay as strong as possible, tennis should be poised to grow and expand in the South in the months and years to come.”

Slinger Bag Expands Reach in Agreement With Dunlop Europe Leaders Challenged on COVID-19 Protection Plan By PHIT America PHIT America, a national charity dedicated to improving the physical and mental health of Americans, is espousing the tremendous benefits of physical activity to help protect people from COVID-19. To communicate to national leaders and Americans, PHIT has launched a petition campaign to increase physical activity levels for children.

This petition says, “Every child must have at least 30 minutes of physical activity three times a week in school.” Almost 50 percent of schools have eliminated physical education and many have eliminated recess.

PHIT America Founder Jim Baugh, the former president of Wilson Sporting Goods, said, “I’ve been sitting on the sidelines for three to four months listening to our government talk about the three ways adults and kids can protect themselves from COVID-19: 1) wear a mask, 2) social distancing, 3) wash your hands. But these leaders are overlooking one of the most important ways to protect yourself from COVID-19, increasing physical activity.”

The charity is partnering with Dr. Zhen Yan, professor of cardiovascular medicine from the University of Virginia, who says, “There’s no question that increased physical activity will build up a child’s natural defense system and protect them from COVID-19.”

Slinger Bag recently announced a multiyear distribution agreement with Dunlop across nine, key markets in Europe.

This announcement follows similar strategic agreements in key tennis markets including Ireland, Japan, UK, Ireland, Switzerland and all four Scandinavian markets, bringing the total value of Slinger Bag’s international distribution partnerships to a cumulative five-year retail value of $200 million.

Match Tennis App approached the various USTA Sections and presented the enhanced feature set in April as a technology solution to facilitate tennis tournaments resuming nationwide. Keeping Hope Alive For this ALTA team, winning isn’t everything

I

t’s a team like no other with a season like no other and the true essence of ALTA. For the Cartersville Country Club summer mixed doubles team, it truly was the perfect season, and they will make history at the club with their first ever ALTA sign. You can see that is says 0-35, Keep Hope Alive. Wait a minute. How could they have an ALTA sign with this losing season? Well, it was far from a loss in the eyes of this newly formed team.

Captain Andrea Surcey has been playing in ALTA leagues for 14 years. She says never has she had the pleasure to be around so many dedicated and enthusiastic tennis players.

“This team formed out of a new initiative at a country club that typically had very little interest in tennis,” says Surcey. As a brand new team, she says they practiced twice a week for seven weeks prior to the start of the summer season. “My team NEVER stopped showing up for practices, never gave up, and never complained,” she says.

The team lost every single match, but that did not dampen the spirits of these players.

Instead, the majority of the team wanted to continue to practice even after the season ended, as a way to prepare for the upcoming winter mixed season. “The best ‘win’ we had was getting to know each other. I love these folks, and they truly enjoyed being on the court for all of the right reasons,” Surcey explains.

It’s quite a history as Surcey made it her mission to improve the tennis atmosphere at the Cartersville Country Club, following a two-year hiatus with no tennis programs and no tennis professionals. Now the club is flourishing with adult teams, great pros, cardio tennis, and junior clinics.

In the middle of all of the issues associated with COVID-19, things were slow to get going at the club, but like others, Surcey knew tennis was one of the best sports in which people can still socially distance. Teammate Lars Ennerberg agrees and says tennis was a great way to get out of the house during this pandemic. “Because of the relationships we made as a team, it helped to rise above those losses. We just had a lot of fun, and it was so amazing to simply get out in the evening and play tennis with people I now consider my friends,” he says.

Surcey says so many people put a tremendous amount of effort to make this a special tennis community. “We had 25 players on the roster, many of whom had not played in several years. We made the call to order our ALTA team sign. …This will be the first ALTA sign in the history of the club.” And that sign will forever have a legendary story behind it in Cartersville.

I want to commend these ladies for the way they worked together, found different courts to play on, drove to the away courts when home courts weren’t available, and communicated very well each week. They were all so happy to be playing tennis again, and they did whatever it took to get their matches in. Bitsy Grant even made it to City Finals!

My team was scheduled to play Fowler Park on Thursday, and on the prior Sunday I saw that I would not have a full lineup. I contacted Tammy Gormley, the Fowler Park team captain, and she said she would do her best to play a line early on Wednesday.

We were all scheduling make-up matches from the prior week’s rainout, but she said she would make it work. One of my 4’s had a fever and wasn’t going to be able to play on Wednesday.

I called another player to fill in and I thought we were all set.

Wednesday morning, my original line 4 player showed up to play, but our sub wasn’t there; she was at home and 45 minutes away. The Fowler Park players and captain decided that they would rather wait for our player to arrive and play tennis. Not only did this prevent a default of line 4, but at line 5 as well.

I’d like to recommend Dr. Tim Cummings for an ALTA Sportsmanship Award. My partner and I played against him and his partner in the 2020 Summer Mixed playoffs round 2 in August. It was an extremely hot and humid morning, and we were playing in full sun. Late in the second set (we had won the first), my partner started showing signs of heat exhaustion.

Dr. Cummings recognized the problematic symptoms and immediately took action to treat her potentially serious condition.

She responded well to his skilled treatment, even though that took longer than what I believe is the standard ALTA 10-minute medical timeout. This deciding line 4 match was settled in a 10-point match tiebreak, which my recovered partner and I won 10-8. Tim placed my partner’s health and well-being above his own keen desire to win.

We couldn’t field a team over spring break and were disappointed when we realized that match was against our biggest rival and neighboring subdivision. They have a roster with 22 players and no motivation to get in a match early. After learning what a pickle we were in, Maura scheduled the match a week before the ALTA season kicked off, but we were completely rained out. Maura told me not to worry and reached out to her team again. One by one, the calls starting to come in, and four lines were completed. Seven Oaks had lost all those lines for matches they could have won by forfeit. Every one of their players showed up here and was as gracious before the match as when it ended.

LTA offers a wide variety of tennis opportunities.

Most of us have played in the Men’s Thursday and Sunday Women’s, and Mixed Doubles leagues. Many of us also have participated in the Senior and Senior Day leagues. Those of us with children have enjoyed watching them participate in ALTA’s Junior League and the Junior Challenge Ladder. Whether you are 10 years old or 80, there’s an opportunity to play, as tennis is a sport that you can participate in throughout your life.

ALTA also sponsors Wheelchair and Run ‘n Roll leagues.

These leagues follow the same seasons as the other leagues and also run for seven weeks. There’s a wide variety of skill-level in wheelchair tennis. Some of our players regularly compete in

regional tournaments, and others are just mastering the sport.

The major difference in rules is that the wheelchair players get two bounces. There are lobs, drop-shots, and cross-court shots.

If you’d like to watch this exciting league play, matches are held on Tuesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. at Hudlow Tennis Center in Best Friends Park near Jimmy Carter and Buford highway.

If you would like to play with a wheelchair partner, you can participate in the Run ‘n Roll season. We are always looking for men and women who play anywhere from the A level to the C level. We have several “Run” players who have participated for years in this exciting league. he 2020 season of the ALTA Junior Challenge Ladder is underway, despite the challenges encountered in a world of Covid-19. The ladder usually begins with a season opening round robin to jump-start the season and help players get ready for active play in the ladder. We moved to a Zoom format for the kickoff which was well attended by players and their families. The ALTA Junior Challenge Ladder has 146 players as of press time. The players were chomping at the bit to get started, as many have been out of competition since schools closed, high school seasons have been cut short, and most tournaments were postponed or permanently cancelled. We are thankful to provide this outlet for junior tennis players!

With 146 players, there will be 1,000 matches or more played during the season that began on August 25th and ends on December 1st. In addition to regular match play, our players will get together for round robins by group. We are thankful to the following sponsors of these events by providing courts for our players. The ladder is managed using Tennis Rungs software, and the players get support from their ladder managers. Thank you to Anthony Swatski who is helping with the software and ensuring all matches are counted. The ladder managers facilitate matches getting played, coordinate with players, hear about good sportsmanship, mediate conflict, and often work as a help desk and mentor, especially for the new and younger players.

We could not do without them. Thank you to Stacy Simmons (Upper Girls), Trish Winfrey (Lower Girls), Dee Jones (Upper Boys) and Michelle McKinnon (Lower Boys) for the work and dedication to the players in the ladder.

To date, there are more than 250 matches played and more than 80 matches scheduled for play in the next week. The standings as of October 5 are reflected on the next page. We are excited to hear who makes the Top 10 at the end of the seasons, how many sportsmanship awards will be given, and how many players will earn three in a row awards!

THE TACTFUL APPROACH If a player mistakenly calls a ball OUT, but it was in and his own partner confirms it was actually in, what happens? Do they forfeit the point? Do the players play a let?

Lamar Scott, Men’s League Vice President As stated in USTA’s “The Code” (#14): “If one partner calls the ball out and the other partner sees the ball good, the ball is good.” As explained in (#12), a player who calls a ball out shall reverse the call if the player(s) become uncertain or realize that the ball was good. The point goes to the opponent and is not replayed.

It is more important to give opponents the benefit of the doubt than to avoid possibly hurting a partner’s feelings. The tactful way to achieve the desired result is to tell a partner quietly of the mistake and then let the partner concede the point.

WHO GETS THE POINT? My partner and I were playing a closely contested Mixed Doubles match recently. My partner (ad side) was receiving our opponent’s serve, and I was situated on the service line playing net (deuce side). Our opponent’s serve was wild and struck me before hitting the ground. We laughed about the wild nature of the serve, but none of us could remember whose point it was. We argued it both ways and offered to play a let, but they ended up conceding the point. In 42

hindsight, was it actually a point for them? Even though I was on the other side from where he was serving and it was not a serve that bounced first in any box, because it hit me first, do they get the point?

Chequetta Allen, Sunday Women’s League Vice President USTA’s Friend at Court Part 1 - Rule 24.i. states: “The point is lost if the ball in play touches the player or anything that the player is wearing or carrying, except the racquet.” *Case 7. A ball that has just been served hits the receiver, or in doubles the receiver’s partner, before it touches the ground. Which player wins the point? Decision. The server wins the point, unless it is a service let. *Additionally in Part 2—The Code: The Players’ Guide to Fair Play and the Unwritten Rules of Tennis, Rule 19 states: “A player shall concede the point when a ball in play touches that player.”

INTERRUPTED SERVE During a recent match, I called the score (15-15) and proceeded to serve. My serve was good, and the receiver was in the process of

returning the ball when her partner stopped play to say that I called the score incorrectly. After discussion, we agreed the score was correct as called. I began my serve again from first serve, 15-15. After the match, I wondered if we had done the correct thing? Should I have won that point?

Unless a fault or a let is called, the ball is in play from the moment the server hits the ball and remains in play until the point is decided.

Once you struck the ball, the opponent should have waited until the point was over before questioning the score. (Friend at Court, Part Two, The Code, Principle 2) Points awarded in good faith are counted. All points played in good faith stand. If during a point, a player realizes that a mistake was made at the beginning (example, service from the wrong court), the player shall continue playing the point. Corrective action may be taken only after a point has been completed.

How Did You And Your Game Come Out Of Lockdown?

F

ans, my rods and cones are all messed up. Not a shock to you?

Well, professional tennis players are like migrating animals that go to various parts of the world, depending on the season of the year. I was absolutely thrilled to see the French Open being played, but it still seemed quite odd that it took place in the fall and not last spring. Additionally, the closed roof and night matches at the French Open were a game changer. The LED lights made the extraordinary red clay come alive, and when fans are allowed back in by the thousands the night matches will be epic!

In comparison, the Italian Open in Rome has had night matches for a long time, but I always felt as a player that it was hard to see the ball. The ball picks up some clay and the technology of the lighting was not what it is today. However, night matches usually were fun for me because the crowds were always so into it. I absolutely know the French night crowds will add to the French Open fun!

Having completed three of the four slams in 2020 was pretty awesome. The US Open created a very safe and strict bubble while the French Open added 44

some fans, but both events pulled it off.

The 2021 Aussie Open will take place as of now, but only with fans from Australia in attendance.

I have been really impressed with the quality of play from the pros. With so much time away from the tour because of COVID-19, I thought the players would need time to get back into top form.

However, I thought the doubles matches were at a top level. It takes hours and hours of practice time to feel completely comfortable, even with an established partner. There are the rare occasions where personalities and performance match instantly, but I have found that to be very rare. There are even times where the performance matches perfectly, but the personalities are not a good fit. I know hall-of-fame doubles teams that won many grand slams but who never spoke on or off the court. I could NEVER do that. …I always played my best when I enjoyed who I was competing and hanging out with.

So how did you and your game come out of lockdown? Have you evaluated your tennis lately? The tennis industry seemed to get a nice jump in participa-

tion and equipment sales. I follow the Tennis Industry of America research.

This gives me a deeper dive into where the game is and where the game is headed. In the 2008 economic slowdown, studies showed that adults were pulling out of their clubs and tennis lessons, but adults still played league tennis. Another nugget I found interesting was that as times were financially tough, parents still found ways to pay for their children to play in tennis programs. In this year of COVID-19, there were many “staycations” where families stayed closer to home and tennis camps grew in size across the country.

This tells me that we should see an uptick in participation of the 400,000 high school tennis players that compete each year. This is important for the long-term growth of the sport. Those high school players mainly play tennis on campus in college and will be the driving force for new tennis players when they start families. Having a string American professional presence such as the Williams sisters and the Bryan brothers may inspire the next generation, but it’s the sound tennis community leadership that keeps the machine working.

ALTA and the USTA are committed to that community tennis model, and I believe that is a winning strategy on so many levels. My family’s activities were founded in community programs and that foundation of a local focus will always be a winner. Remember, passing on your older equipment to the next beginner can start another person’s lifelong journey with tennis.

’m a coach who believes in winning! To me, attempting to win is a lot more fun than waiting for your opponent to lose.

Many players work hour upon hour trying to develop a specific shot they believe will make them invincible, but they still end up on the losing side to that ancient slicer dicer. It’s important to understand that the game is a lot more than the mechanical action of stroking a ball. I can’t tell you how many times I remind players of all levels that the mechanical action of hitting the ball is only a part of being suc-

cessful. Players must learn to play.

When we think of “playing” we think of children, happy times, fun. Whether it’s hide and seek or tennis, there are rules and strategies to be followed. It amazes me how easy it is for kids and adults to come up with logical strategies but fail to use them in the heat of the moment. It is for that reason that I created this simple concept to help keep you focused and understanding how to play winning tennis.

Begin by breaking the court into three hitting zones. Between each zone, create an area of about three feet; (or as I refer to them, Border Zones) these are the places to be when preparing for the oncoming shot. Zone 3 starts a couple of feet behind the baseline and ends halfway between the baseline and service line. Zone 2 ends one foot in front of the service line. Zone 1 goes from inside the service box to three feet from the net.

At the club level, most players spend a majority of their time in Zone 3, with balls landing in Zone 2. These points tend to begin and end there, usually by an unforced error being hit from Zone 3 or a forced error in Zone 1. The forced shot tends to occur when one player is required to hustle forward, hoping to get a drop shot winner accidentally hit by their

opponent, or by attempting a reluctant volley.

At the pro level, a majority of the points are won from Zone 2, with a forcing shot of some kind. The difference between the average player and the pros is that the pros’ Zone 2 extends further back toward the baseline. As your game improves, you too can expand your Zone 2. We seem to think that play takes place in Zones 3 or 1. The next time you play a match, try to incorporate the positioning the pros are striving for. If you are looking to strike as many balls as possible from Zone 2, I’ll bet you’ll be in position a little earlier and you will feel like a miracle has taken place.

When you are stuck in Zone 3, you’ll no longer be rushed on your strokes, but in fact feel as if you have to wait for the ball.

When moving forward to the ball in Zone 2, strike it in an offensive style.

Move through Zone 2 and reorganize at the next border separating Zones 2 and 1. Once again, analyze the situation there as your opponent hits the next ball, then move forward in Zone 1 for the finisher.

As an insurance policy, move back to the borderline separating Zones 2 and 1 as it is likely your opponent will be thinking about sending up a lob. If the lob doesn’t appear, move back to the front of the Zone 1 and try to finish them off again.

Warning: When players are learning to come in and have aspirations of Federer-like volleys, they often make the mistake of trying to get from Zone 3 to Zone 1. The tendency is to blame poor volleys for losing the point when in fact they never got a chance to make a solid volley as the ball was sent whizzing past them. Poor positioning by even the greatest players results in poor shot-making. Remember to set up camp at the borders.

Hit Topspin Like the Pros

T

o take your game to a high level, players should understand the concept of topspin. Topspin is the rotation of the ball, which brings the ball down. Sometimes you may hear that someone hits a very “heavy” ball. That means the player hits with a lot of topspin so when the ball bounces, it kicks up at the opponent making it difficult to hit.

When your groundstroke goes long, it is often caused by a lack of topspin. Ninety percent of topspin is created by the “low-tohigh” swing path of the racquet head. You want the racquet to drop underneath the incoming ball and brush up the back of the ball. The more vertical your swing path, the more topspin that is created. There are two, main factors that can negatively impact the low-to-high swing path: the contact point and tension.

Contact point: If you contact the ball out of your strike zone (especially if you hit the ball late) then you will have difficulty creating a low-to-high swing path. It is much easier to create that swing path if you make contact in front of the body.

Tension: If you are holding the racquet too tightly, then the racquet head won’t drop underneath your racquet hand, and your racquet head won’t drop below the incoming ball. The looser you hold the racquet, the more the head will drop. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being extremely tight, you don’t want to hold the racquet above a 2 for a topspin rally groundstroke. If you want to hit the ball with more topspin or if the incoming

ball is low, you should hold the racquet even looser. At the end of the follow-through, you should be able to gently pull the racquet out of your hand. Being relaxed also will increase your ability to accelerate your racquet head, which will add even more topspin to your shot.

Bending your legs also can help you get underneath the ball.

You may have heard the expression to “load your back leg.”

When you load your legs, make sure to keep your shoulders and racquet hand loose. If the racquet wobbles at contact, many players will tend to grip it tighter. This is a natural response; however, it is an incorrect one. By gripping the racquet tighter, you are losing your ability to create topspin. The racquet wobbled because you hit the ball along the frame of the racket.

Track the ball and prepare better to give yourself a better contact point; then your racquet will be steady in your hand.

The remaining 10 percent of topspin is created by the angle of the racquet face. When a player wants to hit underspin, the lower edge of the racquet head leads the way toward the ball. When a player hits topspin, the top edge of the racquet face leads the way toward the ball so the strings have a slightly downward tilt.

The racquet is an extension of your hand and you always want to have an awareness of what the racquet is doing in your hand. As you increase your understanding of topspin, you will cause a lot of trouble for your opponent!

Best part of your game? Serve, forehand, and volleys. I was an all-court player.

How to Successfully Answer ‘How’d It Go?’

tlanta is known as the tennis mecca of the world, with one of the biggest organized and competitive tennis populations. Yet, unlike most organized sports, tennis coaches can't always attend matches, and thus, aren't privy to their players' actual performance. Regardless of a win or loss, players are expected to come back to practice and give an accurate answer when asked, “How’d it go?”

Court preparation comes from practice and match observation. At both the junior and the adult level, I believe coaches are doing their clients a disservice by approaching the game as a business and not tailoring practice to fit their clients’ needs.

At practice, I can coach you on strategy and get you physically fit, but I can’t anticipate how your opponent is going to react on game day. However, by watching tapes of old matches, I am able to better prepare you for matches and identify patterns in your opponents.

Because coaches aren’t able to attend matches, they have to take the feedback of the players and parents at face value. It’s natural to pick apart everything you did wrong if you lose and glorify what you did right if you win. But keep in mind, sometimes you don’t play your best and still win. Also, opponents can win matches even if you did everything right. Tennis is not about the perfect forehand; it’s about responding. More often, what is missing in your game is not knowing how to respond

How did you get involved in teaching tennis? I taught tennis at summers camps through the YMCA, and was assistant coach for the school tennis team while teaching middle school.

mentally. The opponent is working just as hard as you, so while it is important to have the line 1 win, sometimes the win is responding with your best when your opponent is better. The feedback from the players and parents after a match might be that their backhand was just off that day. But what the coach really needs to see is that the backhand suffered because the opponent did something special.

At Universal Tennis Academy, we have a process called skull sessions. This is an off-court station with mental questions we go through to prepare for drills, privates, and ultimately a match. We suggest that all of our coaches go through some version of this with their clients, whether at adult or junior level.

The golden rule is to recognize your opponents’ weakness, while being able to identify your own strengths. These drills provide players with the tools to stay engaged in a match.

Tennis is an individual sport — a mental and emotional rollercoaster. You are out there alone with your own thoughts, strategies, and decisions. Unlike team sports, tennis players are constantly trying to figure out their responsibility in losing or winning the match. Instead, you should focus on what you do really well versus your liability. Of course, players would benefit by having their coaches at matches. This would impact directly every player’s understanding of the game. And, tennis is 100-percent about understanding your game.

Right and Timely Stretching

W

hether you swing a golf club or a racquet, stretching is key to improving your flexibility and game. So, what kind of stretching routines should you do? The answer depends on whether you are stretching before or after play.

A typical assumption made by many players is that total body stretching before golf or tennis is beneficial in preventing injury and creating accurate and powerful shots. This may not be entirely true. In a recent study by National Strength and Conditioning Association, researchers found that applying whole body, golf-specific static stretching (holding a stretch for a given amount of time) for 20 minutes before testing for driver speed and accuracy was detrimental to performance. Fifteen golfers were measured and were found to have decreases in clubhead speed (-4.19 percent), distance (-5.62 percent), accuracy (-31.04 percent) and consistent ball contact (-16.34 percent). The concern is that this is the type of warm-up most amateur golfers do before their round. Now this begs the question, should we even warm up our bodies before play?

Research has shown that yes, we do need to warm up before we play, and it needs to be dynamic in nature. It is theorized that static stretching increases laxity of the tendons reducing the force producing capabilities of the muscles.

Additionally, the reflexes of the muscles may slow down and neuromuscular coordination needed for swing efficiency may become altered.

Reports have shown that through a proper warm-up, performance can be increased by up to 20 percent. Typical dynamic warm-up exercises are lunge movements, torso rotations, shoulder circles, squats, bridges and pulling and pushing exercises. The weight, if any, should be very light and generally only one set is performed.

Do dynamic stretching before play then static stretching after rounds or matches. When you do, you can improve your flexibility and results!

Keep Your Body Strong Key sport foods and meal ideas to improve your performance and keep your immune system strong as we approach colder months on the court

s we approach the colder time of the year and a potentially challenging flu season, it is crucial to keep your body strong. Nutrition can help!

An obvious starting point is hydration; don’t forget to hydrate just because it’s cold. Tennis players often don’t drink as much in cooler weather because of less visual sweat losses, but staying properly hydrated helps maintain endurance and power on the court. Drink two cups of fluid two hours before play, and another one to two cups before hitting the courts.

Consider some of the new flavored waters that may enhance your drinking volume such as Propel and Powerade fitness waters.

DRINK TWO CUPS OF FLUID TWO HOURS BEFORE PLAY, AND ANOTHER ONE TO TWO CUPS BEFORE HITTING THE COURTS.

Foods to consider BEFORE you play Oatmeal with added nuts and cinnamon Hearty oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate, and it is high in fiber which provides you longer-lasting energy and protein. Adding nuts for more protein and a healthy (unsaturated) fat can help the oatmeal last you even longer on the court. If you sprinkle a little cinnamon, you will be adding even more immuneboosting antioxidants to help fend off winter viruses. Consider the following products to help you quickly choose a convenient pre-match meal: Quaker and Kodiak high-protein oatmeals in a cup.

High-carbohydrate energy bars Energy bars have always been a top sport nutrition recommendation, and now there are some new kids on the block that can be grab-and-go pre-tennis high energy sources.

Make sure the bar you choose has at least a 2:1 ratio of carbs to protein to ensure that the bar is an appropriate pre-exercise choice and can be eaten as close as one hour and even 30 minutes before you walk out the door to play. Pro Bar and Kind Bar Energy Bar are two new products to consider.

Foods to consider AFTER you play Homemade and commercial hot chocolate with added protein for quick recovery Hydrate and refuel with recovery protein immediately after play with homemade hot chocolate (made with milk, cocoa, and your choice of natural sweeteners). Milk naturally will provide protein and carbohydrates, and the cocoa provides antioxidants.

Consider adding some additional instant milk powder, which is a natural source of whey protein and is quickly absorbed into muscles for recovery.

You also can consider these two convenient, ready-to-consume, higher protein beverages that also can be heated: Fairlife Chocolate Milk and Ripple Protein Recovery beverage made with pea protein.

Hot foods that warm you after matches, but are also great recovery choices Chilis and pizza; yes, pizza! Use a slow cooker for homemade chili for the whole family to feed on at home, but given the COVID pandemic, put it in a thermos to enjoy as you watch your teammates play their matches. Use ground sirloin or ground turkey for a lean source of protein. Make sure to add beans because they are loaded with fiber and protein, which will provide you long-lasting energy and keep you warm! Warm foods speed your recovery. Here’s a simple recipe: Classic Chili ingredients that will also boost your immune system: • 8 oz of fresh diced onions, bell peppers, celery • 1 tablespoon roasted garlic • 1 1/4 lb ground turkey or ground sirloin • 1 packet chili seasoning mix • 1 (16 oz) can chili beans • 1 (10 oz) can mild diced tomatoes • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce Pizza may not be at the top of every nutrition list, but for sports we give it an A ++ if you can top it with key recovery nutrients such as 2% cheese, bright colored veggies, and lean meat toppings like chicken, shrimp, and turkey pepperoni. Pizza provides plenty of complex carbs and sodium, and can provide lots of antioxidant nutrition if you add greens such as spinach, orange sweet peppers, and tomato sauce. Remember from previous articles, eating from the rainbow helps with obtaining key nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, and K, to help boost the immune system. During COVID times, you also can individually wrap pizza slices so that teammates can take a slice after the match without risking food contamination.

In conclusion, these are your key reminders for cold-weather sport nutrition: • Drink plenty of water and consider flavored sport waters to enhance your consumption.

• Eat a variety of high complex carbohydrate foods, such as oatmeal and energy bars, before you play and chilis and pizza after you play.

• Consume a dairy or equivalent non-dairy alternative for quick recovery.

• Eat warm or hot food when possible to help warm your body.

• Eat lots of colorful produce during this time of year to maximize antioxidant nutrition.

Place cream cheese in a bowl. Using an electric mixer, whip the cream cheese until smooth and fluffy — about 1 minute. Stir in the caramel topping. Break pie crust up and place pieces into a Ziplock bag; crush until they are in tiny pieces. To serve, dip apple slices into the caramel cream cheese and then into the graham cracker crust.

1 cup butter or margarine, softened

½ cup sugar

½ cup dark corn syrup

2 large eggs, separated 2 ½ cup all-purpose flour

¼ cup butter or margarine

½ cup powdered sugar

3 Tbsp. dark corn syrup

¾ cup pecans, finely chopped Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add corn syrup and egg yolks. Beat well. Gradually add flour. Cover and chill 1 hour. Melt 1/4 cup butter over medium heat. Stir in powdered sugar and rest of the corn syrup.

Cook, stirring often until it boils. Remove from heat. Stir in pecans. Chill 30 minutes.

Shape into 1/4-inch balls. Shape cookie dough into 1-in balls. Place 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheet. Beat egg whites until foamy. Brush on dough balls.

Bake at 375° for 6 minutes. Remove from oven, and place pecan balls in the center of each cookie. Bake 8-10 more minutes until lightly browned. Cook 5 minutes on baking pans and remove to wire racks to cool.

Freeze up to 1 month if desired.

Heat oven to 400°F. Lightly spray 12 mini muffin cups with cooking spray. Onto sheet of cooking parchment paper, uncool pie crust. Using a 2-inch round cutter, cut pie crust into 12 rounds. Press each crust round into mini muffin cups. Spoon 2 tsp. of lime curd into each pie crust cup. In a small bowl, beat egg whites with electric mixer on high until stiff peaks form. Gradually add sugar, beating until a soft meringue forms.

Spoon meringue into a medium-sized food storage bag; seal. Cut tiny bottom corner from bag. Squeeze bag to pipe meringue over top of lime curd in each cup. Bake 12-15 minutes or until crust cups and meringues are light golden brown. Transfer tarts from muffin cups to cooling rack. Cool about 5 minutes before serving.

I

t might be too big to be the perfect stocking stuffer, but it can definitely fit in your tennis bag, and might just be that unique gift for the tennis enthusiast on your Christmas list. It’s the Fit Buddy, and it’s the brainchild of ALTA tennis player Dawn Clements.

It’s a lightweight tool that helps athletes and tennis players relieve common issues as they get older or play a lot of tennis, including neck and shoulder tension, tight pectoral muscles, back tension, tight hip flexors and hamstrings, and the problems associated with plantar fasciitis and the achilles tendon.

Clements experienced extreme pain when she was pregnant with her first child and subsequently injured her back while moving into her first home. She was just 23 years old. It turns out she had five herniated discs! After countless visits and consultations with physical therapists and chiropractors, along with yoga, water aerobics and strength training exercises, she managed to avoid surgery. “It took me years of therapy and work to be able to go on long walks, play tennis, and resume normal activities,” says Clements.

She says she feels for those who experience daily pain. “It can suck the joy right out of life, and it takes a tremendous effort to remain positive and upbeat when you are consistently in pain.”

Each professional she consulted recommended a different therapy or fitness tool. And thus, the Fit Buddy was born. “A friend from Asia introduced me to a fitness tool that had been existence for over 1,000 years. I thought how amazing this tool could be if was well-designed with special ends to use on different areas of the body,” says Clements.

She has continued to alter and improve the Fit Buddy over the years. Clements also works with her tennis team from Carl Sanders YMCA. Teammate Alyson Rogers has been using the Fit Buddy for about three years and says it has helped with her plantar fasciitis.

“I also discovered it helps my lower back as well. It’s really great to keep my feet and back stretched and not have everything so tight,” says Rogers.

Clements has helped professional athletes and offered workshops to corporate groups with tips on how to best use the Fit Buddy. Several top physical therapy clinics, personal trainers, some of Atlanta’s top medical doctors, and other pain specialists have used and recommend this unique tool.
