here are moments each year when the strength of this Association feels especially tangible, and the 2026 AKFCF Convention was one of them.

As you turn the pages of this issue, what emerges is more than a recap of a successful event. It reflects who we are as a community: engaged, forward-thinking, and deeply committed to both our brand and one another.

In “A Week of Connection, Innovation, and Vision,” you’ll revisit the energy that defined this year’s Convention. With more than 1,200 franchisees, partners, and industry leaders gathered, the conversations were as impactful as the programming, ranging from operational excellence to the evolving future of the KFC system. What stood out most wasn’t just the scale of the event, but the shared sense of purpose that carried through every session, hallway conversation, and handshake.

That sense of purpose extends well beyond the Convention floor. Our Government Affairs Committee reminds us just how critical our collective voice is.

Against the backdrop of Washington, D.C., their work underscores an essential truth: the success of our restaurants is directly tied to the policies shaping our industry. Advocacy is not abstract, it is personal, and it is powerful when we act together.

Of course, no Convention recap would be complete without recognizing the individuals who bring our values to life every day. In our Awards feature and Shining Stars spotlight, you’ll read stories that exemplify dedication, service, and leadership in its truest form. These are not just accomplishments worth celebrating, they are standards worth aspiring to. They remind us that the heart of AKFCF has always been its people.

This issue also captures the important continuity of leadership within our organization. As we hear from both our outgoing and incoming Presidents, there is a clear throughline: respect for the progress we’ve made and a steady focus on the opportunities ahead. Change in leadership does not shift our mission, it strengthens it.

Taken together, the stories in this issue tell a larger one. They speak to an Association that is not standing still, but actively shaping its future through advocacy, innovation, recognition, and connection. If the Convention showed us anything, it’s that our greatest advantage is not just the brand we represent, but the collective strength behind it.

Dreams, when we pay attention to them, have a funny way of revealing to us what matters most.

o, this is it. My final letter as your president.

The past couple of years have been some of the toughest years we’ve faced together, but when I reflect back on this time, I will only remember the kindness, love and support that you bestowed on me during my presidency. In the beginning, I was asked, ‘What would you like to accomplish?’ My answer? If after my tenure I can leave people with the feeling of wanting to be a part of something, then I will have accomplished my goal. I’ve heard from many of you, your desires to get more involved, to volunteer and serve this community.

That makes me happy. It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve this Association, and I wish that feeling for everyone!

I think back to “Share Your Story,” my year-one theme, and for me, it was about being vulnerable and honest with ourselves. My first speech, given on the iconic Grand Ole Opry stage, a stage fitting for such an iconic Brand, told the story of Oven Roasted Strips. A metaphor to stop repeating mistakes, and a wake-up call to the system that when we see something wrong, we must take the

microphone and speak out. Continually repeating mistakes will only lead to disappointment and never lead to growth. Being honest about our present allowed me to dream about the future, which brought me to year two and “Realize Our Vision.”

If you were in Washington, D.C., and got a chance to hear my second speech, I revealed some of my most personal and intimate dreams. A little behind-the-scenes moment: I didn’t set out to write a speech where I allowed myself to say the quiet parts out loud. No, like everything else in my life, I was challenged. While brainstorming with a few others, I had writer’s block, only focusing on what I should be writing about, when they said, “Leslie, forget all of that stuff … what do you really want for this Brand?” I got off the Zoom call that afternoon around 3 p.m. and didn’t stop writing until 6 a.m. the next morning. I gave myself the opportunity to daydream about what life, and this Brand, would look like if I could speak my innermost desires into existence, never expecting that my dreams would culminate into the speech

you saw at Convention this past February.

I dreamed about our Brand being so relevant that young people would clamor to tell me about eating in my restaurants. And that dream of wanting a career so enviable that people actually get jealous when they find out that I’m a KFC franchisee. I dreamt about a business so profitable, that we’re the toast of the town — everyone wants a piece of us. And that dream where our legacy is so determined, we MUST pass it down to the next generation — anything less would be a disservice!

You know, those kinds of dreams where the word ‘no’ isn’t an option.

Realize Our Vision was about change, growth, and expansion. I hope that you took away the lessons. Vision is an attitude, and we must have an attitude of attacking our dreams, willing them into reality, and not just letting it happen. We must be in control of our narrative. It will be a process, because vision only becomes reality if we do the work. However, the process must have a beginning, with CLEAR goals at the end.

Along with the lessons, I hope that I’ve left you with the courage to keep dreaming and claim what is ours. Dreams, when we pay attention to them, have a funny way of revealing to us what matters most.

I’ll leave you with a quick story. Have you heard of dream manifestation — the idea that if you have enough intention, you can manifest your dreams to come true? As much as I would like to believe this can happen, I’m not 100-percent bought in. However, one thing this presidency has taught me is that when you allow yourself to be vulnerable, and speak your dreams out loud, others listen. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to make a dream come true. In my second speech, I talked about my dream of being invited to an “infamous career day,” where I would share my love for this Brand with a younger generation. And in that dream, if you remember, when I tell the class that I’m a KFC franchisee, the mic drops, the students hoist me onto their shoulders and carry me out of the classroom in a hero’s fashion. Well, I’m happy to report that since speaking that dream out loud,

my youngest daughter took it back to the University of Kentucky and secured me a speaking engagement in front of young, future business leaders at the Gatton School of Business! Is this what it means to manifest your dreams? When I tell the class that I’m a KFC franchisee, will the young people treat me like the “superhero” of my community that I think I am? Probably not, but it’s a start. Who knows what else we can speak into existence? Maybe this is only the beginning of our story. Maybe this Brand will go the distance for another 75 years, and maybe Chick-fil-A will file for bankruptcy. Who knows what the future holds? A girl can only dream. n Spring 2026 AKFCF Quarterly

FROM THE INCOMING PRESIDENT

RIPPLES OF CHANGE

A

s I ponder my first AKFCF Quarterly article as President — a task I’ve long dreaded — I find myself constantly debating the topic. The anxiety isn’t about writing itself but rather deciding what exactly to cover. Should I aim for humor or seriousness? Reflect on the journey that brought me here, or discuss current events affecting our Brand and business? I even considered exploring the partnership between AKFCF, NCAC, and KFCC. The indecision was overwhelming.

Well, what to do … what to do?

Eventually, after repeated reminders from Kelly about looming deadlines, I realized what I wanted: to share some personal reflections and outline the goals I’m hoping to achieve during my brief tenure as your AKFCF President.

When I reflect on what has gotten me to this point, I think of all the odd turns of events that have shaped my KFC life.

I grew up in the small town of Socorro, New Mexico, with a population of less than 5,000 people. In the 1980’s, I moved from mowing lawns and delivering papers to working a job where I needed a uniform and cooked some of the best tasting chicken at my hometown KFC. I remember, being in elementary school, when I saw the construction of the newest addition to our town. It was a small strip center with a KFC in the front corner. A big-time brand was coming to my town! I was so excited. Growing up as we did, I did not get a taste of those 11 herbs and spices until my older brother, David Sparks, got a job there and brought some chicken home one day after work. Now I have to say, I held my mother’s Sunday fried chicken dinner as the high bar on my chicken education, but, wow, how good was that chicken that the Colonel invented? After a few years of my brother bringing home chicken, he moved off to another town to manage a different KFC. So, if I wanted to get any more of that delicious KFC chicken, I needed to find another way. So, at the ripe old age of 13, (let child labor laws be damned at the time), I got that job at our hometown KFC. That job not only gave me an endless supply of some of the best tasting chicken, but it also helped me fund the parts I need-

ed to build my first truck, go to the movies on the weekends, and even assist in paying for my first years of college.

I worked at KFC all my high school years before heading to New Mexico State University where I studied computer science and electrical engineering. During my time in high school, David, with great sweat, tears, and determination, went on to become one of the youngest KFC franchisees at the time at the tender age of 19. When I had any time off from school, I would help David and his wife, Dianna, run his KFC so they could have a break. Once David had become a franchisee, he wanted to grow and kept looking for any chance he could get. Near the end of my second year of college, he thought that he had a chance to make that happen. So, he asked me to come work for him full time to help with the growth. Due to life and challenges with KFC, that additional KFC store did not come to fruition at the time, but another opportunity came along to get into Taco Bell. With more sweat, tears, and determination, David then became a Taco Bell franchisee as well. While running the two stores for a few years was a lot at the time, I felt that to be who I wanted to be for myself, I needed to go back to college. This time, I became a full-time student and a fulltime RGM at KFC. It took me a few years of 60-hour work weeks and 18-credit-hour semesters but I pushed through.

There were many times I would get out of work late at night and fall asleep in my car — not even leaving the parking lot.

building in front of me and start slamming on the brakes in my parked car thinking that I was about to crash into a wall. After all those tiresome years, I finally got my bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico, home of the Lobos, with a dual major in Marketing and Travel and Tourism. That then took me to the next strange turn of my life.

I had hoped that my freshly minted degree could get me a job in the world of marketing, but instead, the offers I got came from the world of insurance and retail. I decided to work for Sears as it offered me the chance to go to work in a suit each day instead of my KFC uniform. Another big reason was that it took me to Burbank, California to train for a year. I could SCUBA dive without having to plan for months to get to the ocean. Plus, I would be able to see movie stars on every corner! What a weird year that was!

After watching police helicopter chases from my apartment balcony, learning to split lanes on my motorcycle to get someplace on the LA freeways, and all the other stuff you find and see in LA, including those movie stars, I was transferred to the Hemet, California, Sears to manage the hardware department. That is where I met my future wife, Trang. I wore her down asking her to go out with me until she was finally overwhelmed by my charm, wit, and handsomeness. We have been together for 33 years and have three smart, independent, beautiful daughters (who all still love eating KFC chicken).

Next turn. While I was living and working in California and experiencing everything I could, David finally got the opportunity to grow the company. He called me up one day and told me that with his potential future growth, he needed someone to help him.

David then asked me if I would like to come back and work with him. At the time, I had totally stepped away from KFC for the previous two years and expected to one day either move to Hoffman Estates in Illinois, Sears headquarters, or to Florida to dive the warm waters of the Atlantic instead of the chilly waters of the Pacific. So now, I had another hard decision to make. Well, what to do…

Thirty-two years later, we have owned and operated a total of six KFC’s and five Taco Bells. All those stores, people, and experiences have led me to where I am now, starting my year as your next AKFCF President.

Another turn.

As you have figured out by now, KFC has been a major part of my life. This KFC life has given me some of my highest highs (like becoming your AKFCF President) and some of the lowest lows (like having to close a store and letting down the employees and customers who came to depend on us). I have had many different experiences over the years: in the stores, my time running the chairs of the Southwest Region, the time I have spent on the board of the AKFCF and the time away from work raising my family.

Those experiences have all led me to understand that sometimes it takes a community of people and their commitment to what is at hand to do amazing things. That brings me to what I hope to accomplish during my year as your AKFCF’s President.

When it comes to moving mountains and changing the course of a river, sometimes it takes eons to get it done. I only have a year in my term, so I am not trying to change the course of a river, but I am trying to instigate the ripples of change that moves our AKFCF in the direction that our Brand and our franchise system need it to head.

In looking for those ripples, I find we have many smart and intentional people at KFCC and in the NCAC who are trying to turn this Brand around. I believe that they can do it, but that is not the job of the AKFCF. The AKFCF’s job is to play a vital role in

supporting KFC franchisees in any way we can. One of the ways for the AKFCF to support you is by supporting your Regions.

We have many resources and access to people and support from the different Regions, the NCAC, KFCC, and other key areas that can support you as a KFC franchisee.

The way you support us is for you to participate in your Regions and therefore, the AKFCF. We have many high-quality people who take time away from their families and their own businesses to volunteer to help all of us and the Brand to be better than it was yesterday. In addition to all the things that I am expected to do as President, I intend to further develop the relationship the franchisee community has within the Regions and the AKFCF as well as with our franchisor.

I also intend to help shine a light through future articles in the AKFCF Quarterly and with recognition whenever the chance arises, on those high-quality individuals who give their time so freely to our system.

I feel it is important for you to know who these people are and why you should aspire to be like them. Anyone can do it, just reach out and offer to help others to grow in our system, which in turn can make the AKFCF grow to be the best it can be.

People have been asking me if I am excited to start my year as President and I tell them that no, I am not excited, but I am eager. I like to think of myself as pragmatic, only having a year to get what I want to get done, leads me to be eager. My biggest hope this year is to make substantial ripples that help to take us to where we all want to be in the near future.

Well, it looks like I went a lot longer than I expected to go on my first article, and it looks like I solved the problems of “what to do?” Going forward, I am eager to communicate with you about how things are going at the AKFCF and talk about the people you have representing you in your Regions and in the AKFCF. Thank you for the time you have taken to read this article and to get to know me a little more, as well as getting a small glimpse of what I hope to accomplish on this journey I am embarking on as your AKFCF President. n Spring 2026 AKFCF Quarterly

NCAC REPORT

LET’S STOP TALKING AND START DOING!

I

t was great to be together at the AKFCF Convention in February. I was again reminded of the strength, resilience, and unwavering legacy of our country as we celebrate 250 years of American independence, but also of the same rich heritage and history at KFC. We have strength and tenacity rooted in hard work and toughness and we live the daily grind that comes with our business. As I said at Convention, running KFCs doesn’t come easy and it definitely is not for the faint of heart. The Colonel said it best, “the easy way becomes harder, and the hard way becomes easier.”

I wanted to reiterate my message from the Convention as I think it’s that important and relevant for us where we are right now. Realizing our collective vision and delivering on the Comeback Plan isn’t easy. We have made some positive steps but we’re not where we need to be. We can’t give up. The legacy of this great Brand is living proof of not giving up — the Colonel never gave up. We can’t either. But we also can’t keep doing the same old thing expecting a different result — we all know that’s the definition of insanity. I said it before and I’ll say it again: The bottom line to any of our plans and the only metric that really matters is to sell more chicken to more people more often! It’s really that simple.

As franchisees, we have come to the table with more money to fund what we’ve been told would be more meaningful and productive advertising across various media channels. More impressions leading to more sales and more transactions. We 10

We must act swiftly and responsibly to get the results we all desperately need as our businesses deserve it.

need every sale, every transaction, every customer. We need to hold each other accountable for the results. Franchisees, the Corporation, our agency and vendor partners — everyone — we must all be accountable and focused on continued, consistent profitable sales growth. We can’t blame or point fingers.

We must work together and fix the pieces of our business we all know need to be fixed. We must make fast, meaningful progress and we can’t have the excuses of new people, office moves, tenured people leaving the business, etc. We must act swiftly and responsibly to get the results we all desperately need as our businesses deserve it.

We have to get back to the rigor and discipline of gath-

ering and using invaluable customer data from effective test market work to make informed marketing calendar decisions.

We must be very honest with ourselves about the load we’re putting on our restaurant teams versus going to the easy place of faulting restaurant operations for promotions or sales misses. We have heard about Ops Simplification for years, but we have yet to really deliver anything meaningful in that space. We can’t make our teams’ jobs more difficult with clunky technology, outdated processes or LTOs that burden our teams with expiring products and unrealistic expectations.

We have to deliver promotions that our customers want and that make our teams’ jobs easier.

I’m proud of our franchisee family as we leaned in and took big steps and leaps of faith last year by passing an increased

ad contribution rate vote — and we did that in the spirit of partnership, teamwork, and commitment. We trusted and believed in the new Leadership Team.

Now we need our KFC and Yum partners to come to the table with more, in true partnership, so that all parties are making equally significant investments to fund a plan for a successful transformation. We are hearing there is interest in this type of partnership and several of us on your NCAC Committee are working together on what’s next. I can’t say it enough: We must make significant progress with continued, consistent profitable sales growth and that takes true partnership.

The last thing I will say is we must be constantly asking ourselves, “who are we listening to?” If the answer is ourselves and not our customers, our future will not be bright. If we’re really listening to

our customers, we will make the important changes we need to without throwing away our rich history and legacy.

Let’s all act with integrity and a true sense of accountability and partnership — that means all of us in the KFC Family. Let’s get KFC back to its place of chicken leadership, and to a place of

profitable sales and transactions, opening more restaurants than we’re closing and keeping our hard-working committed franchisees in the KFC family instead of watching them leave.

It’s time for everyone to have skin in the game. Let’s stop talking and let’s start doing! n

The new Pickle Mania LTO menu at KFC launched in the United Kingdom on March 23, featuring brine-forward items like a Pickle Burger, Pickle Loaded Fries, Frickles, and, to wash it all down, a Pickle Pepsi Max. Sounds good, right?

The Pickle-Loaded Fries come with fries in dill seasoning, pickle chips, and a drizzle of pickle ranch sauce on top. The “burger” is really a chicken sandwich with KFC’s Original Recipe fillet, pickle seasoning, gherkins, pickle ranch, and crispy pickle chips.

Perhaps most eyebrow-raising is the Pickle Pepsi Max. Order it up, and you’ll receive a Pepsi Max served with a side of pickle juice — allowing each customer to adjust the level of brine to their perfect ratio. Some might think it strange, but others may remember a similar drink invention that became all the rage just a couple of years ago — Pickle Dr Pepper.

Never one to shy away from avantgarde marketing ploys, KFC UK recently launched a pickle-filled LTO menu and debuted the offerings with pickle-filled coat.

t some point in the recent past, someone created an AI-generated video of a puffer jacket stuffed with pickles and pickle juice, and the collective response was less “that’s ridiculous” and more “actually, why doesn’t this exist?” Well, KFC UK was paying attention, as it decided to answer that question.

Enter The Pickle Puffer! And it is exactly what it sounds like: a real, wearable puffer jacket packed with sliced pickles and pickle brine, complete with a built-in straw for on-the-go sipping. This is either going to make you happy or reach for the sick bucket. Either way, it’s a completely unhinged campaign by KFC, but there is a reason behind the madness.

The jacket was created to mark the launch of the limited-edition Pickle menu that was available for just four weeks this past March and April. It includes a Pickle Burger, Pickle Loaded Fries, Frickles, and what might be the most polarizing beverage of 2025: a Pickle Pepsi Max. The wider cultural context, if you need it: #pickles has racked up billions of views on TikTok, fueling viral taste tests, pickle juice shots, and increasingly chaotic kitchen experiments. Pickle-mania is real, it is documented, and KFC has leaned all the way in.

FC is putting faith to the test and asking the UK a strange but memorable question: how much do you really believe in chicken?

Together with agency Mother, the quick-serve chain has launched the third chapter of its ongoing “BELIEVE” brand platform, which saw installments in the last two years.

After two years of building a world around chicken devotion, the campaign now challenges audiences to prove it.

The idea pushes the platform beyond advertising and into customer participation, inviting fans to register and compete for the title of the ultimate Believer later this year.

“We’ve built a world of true chicken obsession with BELIEVE. We wanted to push even further with part three, celebrating the Believers who don’t just love chicken — they live it,” said Monica Silic, CMO at KFC UK&I. “In this exciting next chapter, we’re putting belief in chicken to the ultimate test to prove that committing to cluck is committing to life itself.”

FC India recently constructed a beachside installation at Vizag’s RK Beach to coincide with the opening of its new outlet on Beach Road.

The installation featured a life-size replica of KFC’s signature bucket, created entirely from sand. The sculpture was built over 48 hours by local sand artist Akunuru Balaji Varaprasad, using over seven tons of sand. Positioned along the shoreline, the structure drew attention from visitors and was used as a photo spot by beachgoers.

According to the company, the installation is its first sand sculpture of this kind in India and was designed as part of a local promotional effort tied to the store launch.

The newly opened restaurant, located opposite the beach, spans 2,280 square feet and has a seating capacity of 70. The outlet incorporates design elements inspired by its coastal setting, including boat-themed interiors, a bamboo façade, and sea-facing seating.

The sculpture aligns with KFC’s strategy of leveraging high-footfall public spaces to create visibility around new store openings.

YUM! PLANS $12-MILLION RENOVATION OF DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE OFFICE SPACE

um! Brands plans to invest $12 million to renovate five floors of Louisville’s second-largest building as it relocates its headquarters.

According to multiple sources, including Louisville Business First, five floors of the PNC Tower at 101 S. 5th St. will be transformed for 550 Yum! Brands employees. Last October, Yum! Brands announced plans to move those employees to a new headquarters in the downtown office tower.

The restaurant giant based in Louisville reportedly will sign a 10-year lease. “Our new offices will support the flexibility, creativity, and collaboration of our unrivaled culture and talent, which makes Yum unique,” Chris Turner, CEO of Yum Brands, said in a news release at the time. “We’re grateful for the warm welcome and partnership from Mayor [Craig] Greenberg’s office and the Louisville Economic De-

velopment Alliance as we make this move downtown, and we’re excited for the opportunities that lie ahead in the next chapter of Yum Brands in Louisville.”

For decades, Yum! Brands was headquartered on a 28-acre property off Gardiner Lane. Earlier this year, the company donated the building to Jefferson County Public Schools.

The company announced in February plans to relocate around 100 corporate jobs in Louisville to the company’s Plano, Texas office, combining the KFC Louisville headquarters with Pizza Hut’s headquarters. In early June, the company gave employees in Louisville a September deadline to decide if they will relocate to Plano.

he Convention kicked off on Wednesday with a powerful opening highlighted by an unforgettable address from Leslie Sharp, President of AKFCF. Her remarks set the tone for the week ahead, emphasizing collaboration, resilience, and the importance of community across the KFC system.

A Dream With a Plan: Leslie Sharp on Vision, Change, and the Kentucky Fried Comeback

Standing in Washington, D.C. — a city built on bold ideas and imperfect execution — Leslie Sharp thought about vision. Not the buzzword version, but the kind that carries weight. The kind that asks something of you.

“Vision,” she said, “is a dream with responsibility attached.”

It was a fitting message for a room full of franchisees, partners, and leaders gathered at the 2026 AKFCF Conven-

tion. This is a system at a crossroads, and she didn’t pretend otherwise. But she also doesn’t flinch. Her belief is simple: The Kentucky Fried Comeback won’t happen by accident. It will happen because people choose to do the work.

Learning Vision the Hard Way

Leslie didn’t always imagine herself in the KFC business.

Growing up, she dreamed of journalism — of covering politics, dissecting stories, understanding why people do what they do. Washington, D.C. was once her imagined destination. Then life intervened.

During her junior year of high school, her father became ill. The following years were heavy with uncertainty. By her senior year of college, Sharp faced a defining choice: pursue the vision she’d carried since childhood or return home to help her father with the family business.

She approached that decision the only way she knew how — honestly and head on. “If I come to work for you,” she told her dad, “I’m investing the next 20 to 25 best years of my life. I want to understand exactly what I’m stepping into.”

What followed was eight months of estate planning meetings. She attended every one — not to speak, but to listen.

To learn. To understand the business in its entirety — its strengths, its risks, and its future.

Vision only becomes reality if you do the work,” she said.

“And that work requires honesty, vulnerability, and the right attitude.”

It was, she says now, one of the greatest gifts her father ever gave her. “It was about estate planning,” she reflects. “But it was also about a father setting his daughter up for success.”

Vision Is an Attitude

Leslie was quick to clarify that vision isn’t about idealism alone. It’s about discipline. Accountability. Showing up to every appointment, reading every document, asking hard questions, and laying everything on the table.

“Vision only becomes reality if you do the work,” she said.

“And that work requires honesty, vulnerability, and the right attitude.”

That word — attitude — matters to her. She illustrated the point with a story that’s equal parts self deprecating and unforgettable. Years ago, during a brief engagement, her fiancé casually told her she “looked funny when she ran.” In that moment, Leslie had a vision — one that involved breaking off the engagement, training for a marathon, and proving something to herself.

Four months later, she ran 26.2 miles through the hills of Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, finishing second in her age group. “I didn’t just finish,” she says. “I came home with a trophy.”

The lesson wasn’t about running. It was about refusing to accept a narrative that didn’t serve her — and choosing to act instead. That, Leslie believes, is exactly what this moment demands of the KFC system.

With pride in the brand. With treating every guest like family — because that’s how the Colonel built it.

Writing a New Narrative

Leslie spoke candidly about the dreams she carries — not fantasies, but aspirations rooted in pride and credibility.

She dreams of telling someone she’s a KFC franchisee and seeing admiration, not nostalgia. Of being invited to Career Day at her daughters’ schools and watching students light up at the idea of owning a business that feeds communities and employs neighbors. Of a future where KFC is once again a business opportunity one would be proud to pass down.

And ultimately, she dreams of a comeback. “Wouldn’t that be something?” she asked. “To see the headlines. To feel that momentum again.”

But dreams alone won’t get them there. “We have to be bold,” she says. “We have to scrap what hasn’t worked and

Wanting to See the Changes

Sharp closed with a final story about her father. In the final weeks of his life, after years of illness, he made an unexpected comment. “I’d like to live to be 100 years old,” he said.

When she asked why, his answer stopped her cold. “I just want to see all of the changes.”

In that moment, Leslie realized something profound: change isn’t a burden. It’s a privilege. A sign that you’ve been in the game long enough to matter. And so, her message lands where it began — with vision. “See it. Believe it. Build it,” she said.

Have the courage to embrace change. To stop repeating mistakes. To dream — and then attach a plan. Because if this system does that work together, she is confident of one thing: The comeback won’t just be possible. It will be inevitable.

The day’s energy continued with a keynote presentation from Chris Barton, Founder of Shazam. Barton shared his personal journey and encouraged attendees to never give up on ideas they believe in, offering a message that resonated strongly with franchisees and partners alike.

Wednesday also featured engaging, interactive workshops focused on hospitality and technology, providing attendees with practical ideas and forward looking perspectives to bring back to their businesses.

The evening concluded with a memorable networking event at the Smithsonian American History Museum. Surrounded by iconic exhibits, attendees enjoyed delicious food and a standout violin performance by Brian King Joseph, creating an atmosphere that blended culture, connection, and celebration.

THURSDAY: LEADERSHIP, INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION T

hursday’s agenda highlighted the strength and direction of the KFC system, beginning with presentations from the KFCC leadership team.

At Convention, KFCC’s Leadership Team shared two clear performance goals: 3% Same Store Sales Growth (SSSG) and $28,000 in Weekly Per Restaurant Average (WPRA) sales. The team, under Catherine Tan-Gillespie’s leadership, reinforced that these metrics define what a healthy, sustainable KFC business looks like across the system, and that The Bird Comeback Plan is our roadmap to deliver them.

Leadership was also candid about where the business stands today and emphasized that we are not where we want to be yet, but the work underway is intentionally designed to close that gap.

Over the past year, the focus has been on foundational work: fixing systems, improving processes, and addressing areas that were not consistently setting restaurants up for success. While much of this work wasn’t always visible, it was necessary to create a stronger base for growth — and it has led to greater clarity, alignment, and discipline across the business.

The General Session reinforced the Bird Comeback Plan as the roadmap to achieving 3% SSSG and $28,000 WPRA. Leadership outlined how the four Ps — Product, Promotion, Price, and Place — supported by key enablers (People & Culture, Partnerships, Pioneering Equity, and Process

& Technology), work together to drive performance over time.

Highlights from the session brought the plan to life through tangible examples and shared ownership across the business. These included the announcement and tasting of Crispy Original Recipe Tenders, updates on exciting and strategic marketing partnerships designed to drive demand, a deeper look at the Open House restaurant blueprint, and an overview of the technology roadmap supporting execution. Leaders also shared practical examples of how targeted investments, like the impact of a refreshed restaurant image, can drive meaningful results. Together, these moments reinforced how the Bird Comeback Plan is being delivered through coordinated work across teams, with franchisees, field leaders, and the RSC each playing connected roles.

Rather than relying on a single initiative or short term fix, the plan is built on strengthening the fundamentals and ensuring the right support systems are in place. The enablers are critical to making the work easier to execute, more consistent, and more sustainable in restaurants.

The takeaway was clear: There is no silver bullet. Progress comes from focus, alignment, and consistent execution across all parts of the plan.

Leadership expressed confidence in the goals based on a data grounded view of the business and the foundations now in place. They recognized achieving these goals requires

partnership across the system — from franchisees and restaurant teams to field leadership and the RSC — with each playing a role in delivering the plan.

The takeaway from Convention was straightforward: The goals are clear, the path is defined, and the focus is on disciplined execution of the Bird Comeback Plan to drive 3% SSSG and $28,000 WPRA.

Afternoon Sessions and a Yacht Rock Party

A key highlight was the introduction of a new program, Vision in Minutes, which gave vendors the opportunity to deliver concise five- to seven-minute pitches to franchisees and key decision-makers. This innovative format created a dynamic platform for sharing ideas, best practices, and new solutions.

The afternoon sessions featured important updates from NCAC, RSCS, and GAC, along with a legal update presented by Ron Gardner. These sessions ensured attendees stayed informed on key issues impacting their businesses and the broader franchise community.

Thursday night wrapped up with a lively Yacht Rock Party that brought everyone together for a well-earned celebration. The band Yachtley Crew delivered a phenomenal performance, keeping the crowd dancing on the lido deck and closing the day on a high note.

he Convention concluded on Friday with AKFCF regional meetings and a Voices in Action Town Hall. These sessions gave attendees the opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives, and receive answers to some of their most pressing concerns, reinforcing the Association’s commitment to transparency and engagement.

Throughout the week, the tradeshow floor remained a hub of activity. Franchisees had four dedicated hours to connect with more than 140 vendors, exploring new products,

services, and partnerships designed to support continued growth and success.

acknowledging the incredible work and dedicated service of members who go above and beyond, not only in their community service as KFC franchisees but in their volunteer work with AKFCF as well. The hours that they put in with regional and national committees benefits all of us, so our annual awards program is one way of showing our appreciation. AKFCF President’s Award Justin Stewart

The President’s Award honors members of the AKFCF who have made substantial contributions to the development of the Association and the KFC brand. Individuals adhere to high standards of professionalism, decency, and collegiality. It is awarded to franchisees who have consistently worked to support the AKFCF’s mission statement and have performed “over and above” what has been required. This award is presented each year at the president’s discretion and is approved by the Executive Committee.

This year’s honor goes to AKFCF Immediate Past President, Justin Stewart. “From his early days cooking in his father’s KFC at age 14 to now owning over 126 restaurants, Justin has demonstrated unwavering commitment and passion for the Brand,” Sharp said. “His journey began with a leap of faith, inspired by family and fueled by a vision to build something extraordinary. Today, his leadership is felt across the organization, serving on the RSCS Board, KFC-NPC, AKFCF Executive Committee, AKFCF Leadership Development Committee, NCAC Operations and Beverage Committees, and former Board Chair of the KFC Foundation.”

Justin and his brother Todd have recently been honored as Franchisees of the Year and Operators of the Year by KFCC, a testament to their operational excellence and dedication. For over 32 years, the Stewarts have built and operated beautiful KFCs, setting the standard for quality and innovation.

“What truly sets Justin apart is his heart for people,” Sharp added. “He invests in his teams, fosters a culture of excellence, and never hesitates to help others reach their goals. He believes in the power of leadership, challenging everyone around him to pursue their vision and dreams.”

AKFCF Lifetime Achievement Award David Sparks

This award recognizes an individual who has given decades of outstanding service and voluntary leadership spanning a career in franchising. It is presented each year at the AKFCF president’s discretion and is approved by the Executive Committee. The award recognizes individual accomplishments and contributions to the Association community and is a call for continued service within the system. Award winners serve as role models and mentors for individuals who are interested in making a commitment to a career as a KFC franchisee. For 2025, this high honor goes to David Sparks.

David was born in New Mexico and began his journey with KFC at just 13 years old.

He excelled at KFC in his teenage years, and when he graduated from high school, the owner of the Socorro KFC made David manager of one of his nearby restaurants. It didn’t take long before he was supervising the construction of a new restaurant in nearby Bernalillo, New Mexico. Then, David was offered the chance to buy the KFC and become a franchisee in 1979 at the early age of 20. Since that time, the company has grown to own and operate six KFC’s and five Taco Bells with a legacy spanning nearly five decades. Until just recently, David owns and operates five KFC’s and two Taco Bells all in New Mexico.

“Those who know David describe him as both smart and streetwise, a meticulous problem-solver who always finds viable solutions,” Sharp said. “He is renowned for generously sharing his time and talent with fellow franchisees, standing up for what is right, and knowing which battles are worth fighting.

His leadership steered the NCAC through turbulent times, emerging stronger thanks to his tenacity and fortitude. His philosophy 36

has always been that we’re in this for the long haul. When we do better, the people who come along with us do better too — and that success shows up in how much our customers like us and continue to come back.”

Over the years, David has served in numerous roles with the AKFCF, NCAC, RSCS and KFC. He was a longtime vice chair of the NCAC, and serves as an NCAC representative to this day. He was President of the New Mexico KFC Advertising Co-op and President of the Southwest Region. He served the Southwest Association as a board member, GAC, and RSCS representative. His accolades include the KFC President’s Personal Award, the NCAC’s Colonel and Hard Way Awards, the AKFCF President’s Award, Shining Star Awards, Volunteer of the Year, and he was the first recipient of the AKFCF’s John R. Neal Award.

Graduating high school a year early, Heather pursued a degree in marketing and returned to the family business during summer breaks as a Restaurant General Manager. Upon graduation, she joined Dunn & Bowling LTD, rising through the ranks to become Director of Operations and, in 2020, a franchisee of her own restaurant.

Additionally, Heather serves on the NCAC Operations Excellence Committee and as the 2nd Vice President of the Greater Midwest Region, contributing to the growth and success of our franchise community.

“Her story inspires us all to strive for excellence, embrace opportunity, and make a lasting impact in our communities,” said Sharp.

Colonel’s Legacy Award Heather Bowling

The Colonel’s Legacy Award is awarded to second-, third-, or even fourth-generation franchisees who have made a significant impact within their region or nationally. This honor recognizes individuals for their noteworthy contributions, innovative thinking, and volunteerism. The award is presented each year at the president’s discretion and is approved by the Executive Committee. This year’s honor goes to Heather Bowling.

“I would like to celebrate an extraordinary individual whose dedication, leadership, and impact have set a shining example for franchisees across the Greater Midwest region and beyond,” Sharp said. “Heather Bowling embodies these values in every aspect of her journey.”

Heather began working at her parents’ KFC restaurant at the age of 12, quickly demonstrating a remarkable work ethic and drive for excellence. By age 15, she was running the

The AKFCF Outstanding Partner Award recognizes people who are not KFC franchisees, but who have made substantial contributions to the success of our system. Typically, this award is bestowed upon an exceptional vendor partner. But this year, an additional honor went to AKFCF Executive Director Kelly Rodenberg — much to her surprise!

“It’s through their endless support and constant willingness to be of service that they’ve made such an incredible impact on our organization, on all of our franchisees, and for me, personally,” said Sharp.

Kelly became part of the KFC family in 2013, putting her experience as a meeting planner to work as the Executive Director

of AKFCF. Sharp said that over the past 13 years, she’s successfully planned a dozen Conventions with nine different presidents, cultivated incredible relationships with our event partners, and has managed the AKFCF staff through several transitions, always leading with grace and compassion. To put it simply, if you love coming to this Convention each year, you have Kelly to thank.

ach year, the AKFCF acknowledges individuals whose volunteerism for our KFC franchisee family goes above and beyond. We honor these people with a Shining Star Award.

There isn’t a definitive checklist of tasks or acts of kindness that Association leadership can turn to when seeking to recognize someone’s contributions to our family; we just know outstanding work when we see it.

The recipients of this year’s awards — many of whom are profiled on the following pages — demonstrate selfless commitment to the AKFCF on a daily basis. May you be inspired by their leadership, knowledge, and talents — and the many ways they support the franchisee community.

CARL COULTER

Carl Coulter is the Immediate Past President of the KFC Northeast Franchisee Association, where he has served for the past six years. Career-wise, he has worked for the Summerwood Family (John Marsella and Jim Nasuti) for 33 years where he spent most of his career in Taco Bell, Pizza Hut Express, and Long John Silver, holding multiple positions. He also has led the company’s Burger King operations.

Carl found out about his Shining Star Award while helping to solve a work-related problem (instead of enjoying his dinner at the Franchisee Forum last September).

“I was totally surprised by several phone calls that I must come down to the dinner event ASAP,” he recalled. “Unfortunately, I was helping our KFCC partners in fixing an issue with our scorecard, so I thought dinner could wait. I immediately went to the dinner where I was then still surprised

that I won the Shining Star Award.

“It is really an honor to be recognized by your peers and partners with the understanding that there are many other candidates that could have received this award,” Carl continued. “I am blessed and honored that Eric Cromwell presented me this award.”

This is, in fact, the second time Carl has received a Shining Star. He also has earned the Minuteman Award from the Northeast Region.

JEREMY DIMICK

Talk about a legacy: Jeremy has worked for Harman Management for the past 35 years, where he serves as Vice President of Operations. We can’t think of a more historic place to both learn the business and the value of volunteering with the AKFCF and with a regional association. For his part, Jeremy has served on the AKFCF Board for five years, as well as with the Finance Committee and on the NCAC Beverage Committee.

Jeremy was surprised with his Shining Star at the Franchisee Forum in Tampa, Florida, in September 2025. He says he was honored by the recognition but doesn’t volunteer for attention. “Awards don’t really mean much to me, but I’m honored to be recognized,” he said. “We are navigating, arguably the most challenging business and economic times we have ever seen and I’m just trying to do my part to help in any way I can. I will continue to serve in any capacity that I can. I love this Brand and I love our franchisee family.”

Second-generation franchisee Heather Bowling purchased her first restaurant at the beginning of COVID in 2020. Talk about a trial by fire! At least she had her parents’ experiences to guide her through.

Don and Joan Bowling have been KFC franchisees for more than 40 years. “Needless to say, it’s been a crazy ride,” she shared.

She began working at her parents’ KFC restaurant at the age of 12, quickly demonstrating a remarkable work ethic and drive for excellence. By age 15, she was running the buffet on Sundays. After graduating from college, Heather went back to work for her parents before venturing out on her own.

Heather, who currently serves as the Greater Midwest Vice President and OEC subcommittee member, was surprised with the Shining Star Award at the Franchisee Forum in Tampa, Florida, last September like so many others on this list. “I’m very honored to be awarded the Shining Star from my peers,” she said.

Among Heather’s other accolades are the Recognition for Excellence in Restaurant Operations Award, and perhaps many of you recall that Heather also just received the Colonel’s Legacy Award at the 2026 AKFCF Convention in Washington, D.C.

AUSTIN FELKER

Austin is a third-generation franchisee (Felker Day Inc.) who oversees his family’s 16 restaurants in North and South Carolina. According to Austin, his family’s history with KFC goes back 60 years when his grandfather, Troy Day, acquired his first two restaurants in North Carolina in 1966. Through his leadership, the business expanded to around 30 locations across the Carolinas.

“One of the things I most admired about my grandfather was his belief in service above self,” Austin says. “In addition to building our family’s business, he devoted a great deal of time to supporting fellow franchisees and strengthening the system. He served as both President and Director of the Southeastern KFC Franchisee Association and also served on the National Franchisee Advisory Council before it became the NCAC.” That legacy of service runs in the family, Austin said, adding that his father, Eric Felker, has served in each officer role in the Southeast including most recently as President and currently Immediate Past President of the SEKFCFA. Eric also serves on the NCAC Beverage Committee and as an AKFCF Vendor Liaison.

For his part, Austin has served on the Government Affairs Committee since 2018, including roles as Southeast Representative, Secretary, Vice Chair, and Chairman.

He also serves on the AKFCF Executive Committee as Treasurer and as the Southeast’s 2nd Vice President. “Staying involved with our Associations and our committees has been incredibly meaningful, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue our family’s tradition of service to the franchisee community and the brand,” he said.

Among his many honors since taking the helm of his family’s business in 2016, Austin received the Colonel’s Legacy Award at the 2023 AKFCF Convention. “When the videos of my family members, franchisee friends, and co-workers showed up on the screens in the convention hall, I was genuinely surprised and emotionally moved,” he said. “Being recognized for my contri-

butions to the Association as a third-generation franchisee in that setting is a unique and special honor. I greatly appreciate Keith Cole for recognizing me and for his mentorship and wisdom working together over the years.”

Austin was presented his Shining Star Award at the Franchisee Forum in Tampa, Florida, in September 2025. “Michael [Hubbard] is a role model and a mentor to me, so it meant a great deal that he was the one who recognized me,” Austin said. “Michael went on to be recognized as the Franchisee of the Year at the 2026 AKFCF Convention in D.C. and I couldn’t be prouder of him, such an incredibly well-deserved acknowledgement of Michael’s contributions and success.”

So, what does it mean to Austin to be recognized as a Shining Star? “Being recognized for my efforts and dedication to the AKFCF … is an incredible honor,” he said. “I hope to be an ambassador for the Brand and the Association at both the national and regional levels by upholding the values and missions in the roles I serve.

This recognition also reflects the mentors and outstanding individuals I’ve had the privilege to work alongside on various committees. Each person contributing their unique talents and commitment to our shared goals.” n

TECH COMMITTEE

OUR WORK IS YOUR GAIN

I

’d like to get this column kicked off with a brief overview of the prevue and structure of your Technology Subcommittee.

The Technology Committee is unique in that it is comprised of six members, three of whom are appointed by the AKFCF President while the remaining three are appointed by the NCAC Vice Chair. The Committee members for 2026 are: Matt Hansen (AKFCF), Jim McKenzie (AKFCF), Derek Shaw (AKFCF), Jon Packer (NCAC), Pushpak Patel (NCAC), and me (Committee Chair, NCAC).

As one might suspect, the Technology Committee deals with all restaurant technology, including all in-restaurant technology and owned/aggregator channel digital technology. We are also charged with reviewing/approving the recommendation to the NCAC for the digital fee currently in place on digital orders. This brings me to my first point of interest:

Tech Fee REDUCED for Balance of Year 2026!

After extensive work, your NCAC recommended and approved a reduction in the per-transaction charge on digital orders! The Digital Fee for the remainder of 2026 has been set at 3.1 percent of digital sales (does not include kiosks), down from the 3.5 percent franchisees have been paying in recent years. This reduction comes as a recognition that much of the initial platform building has been completed, and that maintenance of the digital ecosystem should cost less than the original build-out.

That doesn’t mean we don’t have work to do or eliminate the fact that improvements can and should be made as we move into the future. Accordingly, the Technology Committee will continue to consider ongoing budgetary needs, as well as reconvening later in the year to address the Digital Fee for 2027 and bring a recommendation to the NCAC Committee for review, discussion, and approval.

Hardware Lifecycle & End of Life (EOL) Visibility

KFCC is finalizing a new dashboard that will give franchisees clearer visibility into when restaurant hardware approaches end of life, helping support proactive planning and investment decisions. In parallel, KFCC is completing the Comcast agreement renewal, which will require franchisee participation. The company also is exploring whether a PC leasing option could be made available through RSCS; availability will depend on overall participation and feasibility.

ORBIT Reliability & System Monitoring

Core POS and payment devices are performing within acceptable standards.

Current focus areas include kitchen display systems (KDS), kiosks, and in-restaurant edge devices. Teams are enhancing monitoring and alerting to improve early detection and faster resolution of issues.

KDS stability remains a priority, with improvements actively being tested before broader release.

Kiosk Scaling & Placement Guidance

Updated kiosk placement guidelines are being finalized to support more consistent and scalable deployments. These guidelines incorporate learnings from prior pilots and deployments, brand standards, and accessibility requirements, while aiming to preserve smooth restaurant operations.

Next steps for kiosk expansion are being aligned carefully with overall system readiness to avoid introducing unnecessary operational risk.

Refund Scam Deterrents

Several deterrents have been implemented to help reduce exposure to refund-related scams. These include targeted team communications, enhanced on-screen warnings during refund actions, and

monitoring processes in partnership with our payments and support teams to flag potentially suspicious activity.

Aggregator Refund & Chargeback Recovery

Ongoing efforts to improve refund and chargeback recovery across delivery aggregators have resulted in meaningful progress. These initiatives are focused on strengthening controls and recovering funds where appropriate, with continued work underway throughout the year.

Break & Meal Attestation

In the near term, efforts are focused on stabilizing current break and meal attestation processes, closing identified gaps, and improving reporting so restaurant leaders can more easily identify and address missed attestations. Longer term, work is underway with our workforce management partner to define a more comprehensive solution that integrates scheduling, forecasting, and attestation capabilities.

Modernization Blueprint

A high-level modernization blueprint is helping create a shared view of how restaurant, digital, and data systems work together. This clarity supports better sequencing of improvements, reduces technical complexity over time, and enables more reliable innovation across ordering, delivery, and guest-facing experiences.

Technology Investment Focus

Technology investments continue to be prioritized around keeping restaurants running reliably — improving system stability, increasing transparency around hardware costs, and addressing material risks such as fraud and compliance. We aligned on a funding level that supports these priorities without overextending the system or increasing operational risk.

Graduate Spotlight: Veronica Nimri

AKFCF Quarterly Spring 2026

Each year, the KFC Foundation recognizes one outstanding participant as our GED Graduate of the Year. For our 2025 award, we proudly honored Veronica Nimri, Shift Supervisor at a Harman’s KFC in Tacoma, Washington, who received a $1,000 prize.

Veronica’s journey is one of perseverance and purpose. Growing up with an unsteady childhood, she relied heavily on mental health professionals who supported her through difficult seasons of life.

“The professionals who surrounded me and helped me become the wonderful person I’ve grown to be are my heroes,” Veronica shares. “Because of them, I’ve gone farther than I ever thought possible — and it’s my goal and my passion to do the same for other young people in the future.”

At KFC, Veronica has achieved many of the goals she once set for herself — earning promotions, paying off her car, and creating the independent life she once only dreamed about. In April 2025, she reached a major milestone by earning her GED through the KFC Foundation.

Through this achievement, Veronica discovered a new passion for learning and realized she wanted even more for her future. She enrolled in a manufacturing apprenticeship through the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee, a program that helped her build confidence in the classroom — and even find enjoyment in subjects like math that once felt out of reach.

he opening day of the KFC Caribla Convention 2026 in Washington, D.C., brought together franchise leaders, suppliers, and corporate partners for a full day of networking, learning, and collaboration. From early morning meetings to a lively evening celebration, the agenda reflected the strong partnerships and shared goals that continue to drive growth and innovation across the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The morning program continued with the KFC LA&C RMF meeting, a key session focused on reviewing strategic marketing priorities across the region. One of the central topics discussed was the marketing strategy for the upcoming year, emphasizing the importance of coordinated campaigns that strengthen brand presence while allowing markets to adapt initiatives to local consumer preferences.

Another important discussion centered on KFC’s evolving food philosophy and menu

vision. Leaders shared insights into how menu innovation continues to play a critical role in maintaining customer excitement and brand relevance. The conversation highlighted the balance between introducing new products and maintaining the iconic offerings that define the brand, while ensuring operational efficiency across diverse markets.

The session also included an RMF calendar update, providing a clear overview of the campaigns and initiatives planned for the year.

This update helps franchisees align their local marketing calendars with regional programs, maximizing the impact of coordinated promotional efforts across the Latin American and Caribbean network.

At midday, attendees gathered for the Caribla Lunch, generously sponsored by SYSCO IFG. The lunch provided an opportunity for franchisees, vendors, and KFC LAC attendees to continue conversations in a relaxed setting.

These networking moments are an essential part of the Convention experience, strengthening professional relationships and encouraging collaboration among markets and partners.

The afternoon began with an engaging keynote presentation by performance coach Jim Murphy, sponsored by Touch Dynamic. Murphy delivered an inspiring conversation with Regina Borda, KFC LAC General Manager, on leadership, resilience, and the mindset required to achieve sustained high performance. Drawing from his experience working with elite athletes and organizations, he encouraged attendees to embrace discipline, adaptability, and continuous improvement in their professional and personal journeys.

Following the keynote, the afternoon workshops began.

Three specialized workshops addressed some of the most important topics shaping the business today. The Digital Workshop examined the growing role of technology in restaurant operations and marketing. Participants explored how digital ordering, delivery platforms, loyalty programs, and targeted online campaigns can strengthen customer engagement and drive sales growth.

The Growth Workshop focused on strategies to accelerate market development and improve restaurant performance with opportunities to expand their footprint, optimize operations, and adapt to changing consumer behaviors. The collaborative nature of the session encouraged open dialogue and the sharing of best practices among markets.

The third session, KFC Listens, highlighted the value of customer feedback in shaping operational improvements. The workshop explored how guest insights collected through surveys, digital platforms, and in-store experiences can help identify opportunities to enhance service, strengthen brand loyalty, and improve the overall customer experience.

Together, these workshops created an environment of collaboration and learning, reinforcing the importance of shared knowledge across the regional franchise network.

As the formal program concluded, the day transitioned into one of the Caribla Convention’s most anticipated social events: the Caribla Pepsi Party.

Hosted at Bobby McKey’s Dueling Piano Bar, just a short walk from the Gaylord venue, the evening offered attendees an opportunity to relax and celebrate the strong partnerships within the Caribla community.

Sponsored by PepsiCo, the event featured live dueling piano performances, creating a lively and interactive atmosphere. Franchisees, vendors, and KFC LAC partners enjoyed music, conversation, and laughter as they strengthened relationships built throughout the day.

The opening day of the Caribla Convention set a strong tone for the days ahead. The Hard Way It is comparatively easy to prosper by trickery, the violation of confidence, oppression of the weak … sharp practices, cutting corners — all of those methods that we are so prone to palliate and do as “business shrewdness.”

It is difficult to prosper by the keeping of promises, the deliverance of value in goods, in services and in deeds — and in the meeting of so-called “shrewdness” with sound merit and good ethics.

The easy way is efficacious and speedy — the hard way arduous and long. But, as the clock ticks, the easy way becomes harder and the hard way becomes easier.

And as the calendar records the years, it becomes increasingly evident that the easy way rests haphazardly upon shifting sands, whereas the hard way builds solidly a foundation of confidence that cannot be swept away.

LEGAL UPDATE

MUCH TO SAY, MUCH TO DO

O

ne of the things I love most about being part of the KFC family is that even though I’m not a franchisee, you have adopted me as one of your own. It’s because of the close nature of the relationship I have with you and the fact that most of you know me well — indeed, many of you have even met my family — that I feel I can be brutally honest with you as I write this today.

While considering what to write for this issue, I had a million things running through my mind. So, this time around, I’m going to give you some thoughts on a variety of topics. Try to keep up!

CONVENTION WAS A ROUSING SUCCESS Let’s begin by celebrating what, in my mind, turned out to be one of the best conventions I have attended since I started coming almost 15 years ago. While our annual AKFCF Convention is typically a great time, filled with interesting programming and even more enjoyable social events,

this year hit harder for some reason. The sense of concern for one another — what you’d expect from a group that feels more like family — was everywhere. And I felt a real sense of commitment to what we were doing together to turn the brand around.

There was a quiet and determined resolve that permeated every conversation I had with franchisees and corporate attendees alike. And the social events? The American History Museum was unbelievable and inspiring, and as a kid of the 70s and 80s, the Yacht Rock party perfectly matched my mood exactly! Congrats and thanks to Leslie, Kelly, and the entire Convention team. Well done!

THE COMEBACK IS NOT WHERE WE WANT — BUT WE HAVE MADE PROGRESS Recently, I have been hearing a few comments about how the Comeback Plan isn’t working, and that we haven’t seen progress on our journey to recovery. I disagree. As I wrote to you in a memo last summer, the

plan’s goal is sustainable 3-percent growth.

But that was never going to happen overnight. The incremental ad dollars raised have begun flowing, and I bet you have seen a lot more KFC ads in the last few months than you have for the last few years.

The results show promise. Q1 was our first positive quarter (albeit barely) in more than a year, and given the minus 5 many were experiencing last spring, that is progress.

We obviously still have a long way to go, but that resolve I felt at Convention seems to be getting rewarded so far.

THE PEACEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER On April 1, Leslie Sharp’s two years as AKFCF President came to a close, and Roger Sparks ascended to the Presidency from his former role as First Vice President. Let me begin by congratulating Leslie again on the magnificent job she did leading the AKFCF through the last few turbulent years.

Leslie’s term saw tremendous stress on the system as sales suffered for a whole host of reasons — none of them hers. We had the change of KFC Presidents (which has happened before), followed by almost complete turnover of our corporate partners with the move to Dallas (which we have never had to deal with). Through all of it, Leslie planned and executed successful Conventions, forged stronger relationships with the entire KFCC team, and contributed mightily in her role as an NCAC member (as the AKFCF President has an automatic seat on the NCAC).

We are only a few weeks into Roger’s term and it’s clear he is not content with letting the organization rest on its laurels.

We already are abuzz with energy around some projects Roger is committed to fulfilling during his term, as well as laying the groundwork for our future success by seeding our next long-term planning ses-

sions to renew and rejuvenate our Strategic Plan next year. I am excited about this new chapter and will be finding as many ways as I can to help Roger succeed as much as his predecessor!

A FULL TEAM WILLING TO LEARN Speaking of the move to Dallas, it’s been a little over a year since Yum! made the announcement of its intention to move KFC headquarters to Dallas, setting off a small trickle of departures that then turned into a dam-breaking flood of long-time KFC employees unwilling or unable to relocate.

This created a tremendous challenge for all of us to find a way to “keep the railroad running,” while trying to backfill literally dozens of necessary roles within KFC. That required KFC President Catherine Tan-Gillespie to first fill her leadership team with qualified individuals, and then each of those new leaders needed to fill out their own departments. Since I last wrote to you, KFCC has finished filling those roles. And while much of the team is new to Yum!, KFC and/or franchising, my observation is that these new recruits are, by and large, earnest, eager, and willing to listen and learn to what we need. And while I am certain we will have growing pains, a collaborative attitude goes a long way in building the relationship we need to maintain if we are to stay focused on what is important to everyone — sales!

BEVERAGE NEGOTIATIONS ARE IN FULL SWING Finally, let me say a few words about where we are in our discussions with potential beverage partners, as our current agreement with Pepsi expires at the end of this year. As we have reported in the last several months, we are in discussions with all three major beverage suppliers (Pepsi, Coke, and Dr Pepper). These discussions are not just about what soft drinks you can sell. They also involve conversations around pricing, rebates, equipment, maintenance, ad funding and support, convention and meeting support, and innovation, to name just some of what is being discussed. Franchisees are leading these discussions to make sure that what is important to you is front-and-center in whatever deal we agree upon. Our hope is to have decisions made by the end of Q2 and a 2027 plan developed with our chosen partner well before the end of Q3. It will be busy to be sure, but we are committed to realizing the best outcome for both franchisees and the brand in these discussions.
