The Raymond Terrace Bowling Club auditorium will host the Irish dancers-Voyage of Irish dance and the Raymond Terrace has Talent contest (ages 7-18yrs).

Jacaranda Avenue will showcase the Gym 21 display, roving belly dancers and free twisted animals by The Balloon Guy. Workshops will be running all day with Drumming on Jacaranda Avenue, Soul Fire Circus skills on the Rectory Grounds and a Dream catcher workshop, Photogram workshop and Art heroes workshop on Jacaranda Avenue.

Jumping Castle and Face painting will be in the Rectory Grounds, and there’ll be clowns and other amusement rides on Jacaranda Avenue.

THE Jacaranda Spring Festival is coming up fast, with organisers releasing an exciting, jam-packed program for this weekend.

The event will be held across three venues- Jacaranda Avenue, Rectory Homestead and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club auditorium.

The Festival will be opened at 10am by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer, and an Indigenous welcoming ceremony will be performed by Tarryn Roche to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land.

A series of performances will entertain the crowds, including Thou Walla drumming group, Dance Extreme, United Dance, Dance of life Belly dancing, Mei Walker cultural dance, Celtic choir and harp, Zumba with

Safety Culture, Culture Change PORT Stephens Council has taken out the award for ‘Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety Culture for big business’ at the 2017 SafeWork NSW Awards.

The awards recognise businesses and workers with the highest standards of workplace health and safety and return to work outcomes in the state.

General Manager Wayne Wallis acknowledged the efforts of the whole team for this impressive win.

“For Port Stephens Council to be recognised as having the best Work Health and Safety culture in the state is an amazing achievement,” Mr Wallis said.

Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s wonderful to see the team rewarded for their hard work.

“Port Stephens Council has made vast improvements to our safety practices over the past six years. We’ve gone from a poor performer in some areas, to the best in the state, which is why this award means so much,” Ms Le

Council also pick up another award and has taken out the Culture Change Innovation and Excellence award for a ‘Large Regional Council’ at the first Local Government NSW (LGNSW) Planning Awards.

Port Stephens was one of six councils recognised for leadership and innovation in planning and development at the awards, which took place at a breakfast at Parliament House.

Mike McIntosh, Council’s Development Services Group Manager, says he’s extremely proud of the team’s efforts.

“This award is recognition of many years of hard work that our staff have put in to create a culture where we facilitate the right type of investment and development for Port Stephens,” Mr McIntosh said.

“Many people don’t realise that behind the scenes, a lot of discussion goes on between our staff and developers – whether they are mums and dads, or larger scale – to get the right

Mr McIntosh says that the culture change has contributed to Council’s Development Application approval times being well below the state average.

“As a large regional Council, we have over $300 million a year in Development Approvals, so it’s pretty impressive that we’ve been able to maintain this volume while dramatically reducing approval timeframes.

“It all comes back to the hard work of our team, who are focused on fostering a balanced approach to development and ensuring that Port Stephens remains an attractive place where people want to come and live their dreams,” he said.

Part of a coordinated strategy for economic growth PORT Stephens Council is working in collaboration with the NSW Government and six local councils to develop a coordinated strategy for economic growth in the Hunter.

The Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) will be used to inform regional development policy and identify actions that can be undertaken to support economic growth across Port Stephens, Cessnock, Dungog, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Singleton, and

Upper Hunter Shire council areas.

Jane Perrin, Council’s Economic Development Coordinator, says the strategy will guide the NSW Government’s budget allocation of $1.3 billion for regional NSW through the Regional Growth Fund.

“The regional strategy is designed to support greater access to grant funding and increased investment opportunities throughout the

Hunter,” she said.

Ms Perrin says that in order to develop the strategy, feedback is being sought by Sapere Research Group.

“To promote economic growth in the Hunter, we need to hear from our local community, business and industry on what they think are the key opportunities and challenges facing industries,” Ms Perrin said.

“The survey only takes about 10-15 minutes and it is the best way for people to have their say on how this strategy can best encourage growth in our region,

COWs public speaking

LOCAL students have taken out the ‘COWS’ public speaking comp.

The Lions Club of Raymond Terrace hosted the Public Speaking component of the COWs events.

COWS, which stands for Celebration Of Words, is an event run annually.

The Celebration of Words events celebrate a variety of public speaking, story and poetry writing, showcasing the skills of local young people.

This year was the third year

of the competition.

Kimberley Osborne, Brian Tang and William Poley represented Medowie Christian School in the competition.

The students were asked to speak on three topics on the night, with each student from each group taking on a one particular topic respectively.

This year’s competition saw the students asked; “How would you manage illegal graffiti and rubbish dumping in our parks and open spaces? How would you encourage young people to use our parks and open spaces

Upgrade for Alesco ALESCO Senior College, Raymond Terrace Campus is getting a much welcomed upgrade with the recent announcement that they will receive $49,200 from the NSW Government to renovate a new campus building at 72 Port Stephens Street, Raymond Terrace for students from a variety of backgrounds and personal circumstances attending courses through WEA Hunter.

The funding, which has been provided through Round Three of the Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF) provides one-off grants of up to $50,000 to councils, notfor-profit organisations and private sector organisations to undertake physical improvements in social housing communities or other areas visited by social housing tenants.

“Funding from the SHCIF not only improves community facilities, but brings tenants, neighbours and the wider community

together,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said.

“I am pleased that Alesco Senior College in Raymond Terrace will be assisted through this great government initiative.”

Principal Theresa Pantalone was delighted to receive the grant to support the growth of a new campus in 2018.

“Alesco Senior College has been supporting vulnerable young people complete Year 9 and 10 in the area for the past three years,” Ms Pantalone said.

“Now with the development of a larger premises will be able to offer student opportunities to complete their HSC and also provide vocational opportunities for the wider community.”

I’m not sure if my daughter is studying or not.

Each time I go to her room, her head is buried in her laptop, but how do I know if she is learning her work, or engaging in other activities?

Dear Ms BS, I HAVE a teenage daughter, so I am cued in to some of the subtleties of distinguishing between study and social media.

You need to observe her facial expressions.

If she has a smirk on her face, she probably isn’t finding the constant of proportionality on the maths exam practice paper.

Instead, she is no doubt planning end-of-year parties or deciding which of 50 Snapchat filters she will use.

Is she sobbing about how maths sucks and has no value in the real world, or is she making peace signs into her phone and giggling?

The first is a sign of study (albeit frantic study the night before the exam rather than weekly revision).

The second is her careful planning for a 1970s-themed ‘gatho’ with 300 hyped-up teens at a house with no parental supervision.

Is she making comments such as, “Who cares about onomatopoeia? I mean, really, who cares about this stuff? Who even made up a word as insane as that?” or is she saying, “Mum, the Wifi keeps dropping out!”

The latter is a clear indication that social media activities are well and truly underway.

You need to get your daughter out of her bedroom and into the dining room.

Even though this will ruin your weekend, you will be able to furtively glance at her laptop at regular intervals, and ensure she is experiencing the same misery we all had to endure as teenagers.

Plan-it Youth

THE Plan-it Youth Mentoring Program has been a wellestablished career mentoring program at Irrawang High School and Hunter River High School for nearly 10 years.

Trained mentors under the guidance of Mrs Libby Dingle, meet weekly with selected students from Year 10 to help them determine how their future could look and help with potential career pathways.

They also assist students with goal setting and help them to recognise their strengths.

Some of the activities that the students and mentors participated in during the program included: gettingto-know your activities, goal setting, career planning,

interview techniques and an excursion to Hamilton TAFE. Last week, students who have completed this term’s program at the final celebration in front of family members and their friends, each student spoke about their experiences in the past ten weeks and of their potential careers with positivity and optimism.

School representative, Luella Fagan, told News Of The Area, “I’d like to congratulate the students on their well-prepared speeches about the program and what they have achieved.”

“A big thank you also to Mrs Dingle and her happy team of mentors for their continued support of our students and to Mrs deWit for her organisation.”

“This truly is an invaluable program for students,” she said.

HUNTER River High School has taken out the ‘Let’s Play Bowls’ regional final, earning them the 2017 title of the NSW champions.

The Hunter Education Region is one of ten across New South Wales, extending north to Taree (Manning District), Maitland and to its west (Hunter District), Greater Newcastle (Newcastle District) and south to Lake Munmorah (Lakes District).

The Hunter high schools ‘Let’s Play Bowls’ competition targets some seventy schools in an open competition for both male and female Years seven to eleven students.

The team from Hunter River High School comprised of students from Years eight and ten, Ryan Jonovski, Blair Soars, Kane Chester and Zac Nicholls, who on Monday 16 October played and won the 2017 Finals of the ‘Let’s Play Bowls’ competition at Lambton Bowling Club, under the coaching and supervision of Mr Guider.

Mr Guider explains, “The High School Lawn Bowls Competition, Let’s Play Bowls, is in its third year and Hunter River High School are this year’s winner.”

The four person competition is played over two sets of eight ends, which creates the opportunity for

any side to win.

Players are required to rotate positions prior to each match. This challenges the players to deliver a variety of bowls during the games.

The Hunter River High School side included Raymond Terrace Bowling Club representative players, Blair Soars and Zac Nicholls, as well as Ryan Jonovski and Kane Chester.

Hunter River High School defeated Great Lakes College Forster in their semi-final and then had a seesawing match in the final against Toronto High School. An unbeatable bowl on the last end by Kane Chester, saw the Hunter River High School side come out on top.

The winners were awarded a cheque for $1000.00, which the student proudly presented to their Hunter River High School.

Santa Claus is coming to town BAMMM! POW! Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s arriving in a Bat Mobile.

SANTA Claus is coming to town, and he’s arriving in a Bat Mobile.

MarketPlace Raymond Terrace is bringing Santa to town in spectacular style for a day of fun, festivities and best of all bargains on Sunday 12 November 2017.

This year will be the biggest Santa’s arrival with a Show N Shine car show becoming part of the event.

Batman and Santa will be led by the Irrawang High School Drum Corp and local school and dance groups together with a parade of friends including Bumblebee, Despicable Me 3 characters, Dave, Mel and Gru, as well as MarkeeP, Nutcracker and Rudolph of course.

They will travel down Bourke Street onto the fields and then into MarketPlace.

The day will also pay tribute to the local emergency

services such as the Police, NSW Fire & Rescue, Rural Fire Service, NSW SES and local organisations Raymond Terrace Lions, Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed, Orange Sky together with local schools and dance groups with all the entertainment set to overflow from MarketPlace and onto the neighbouring field.

MarketPlace Raymond Terrace Centre Manager Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz said there would be something for the whole family, with live music in addition to free activities including dodgem cars, jumping castle, bungee tramps, rock climbing wall and animals from Oakvale Farm.

“Our annual Santa’s Arrival event is always a signal that the Christmas season is here, and it really gets people in the holiday spirit,” she said.

Leukaemia Foundation.

This is a tremendous sign of support from the local car enthusiasts.

DESTINATION Port Stephens members gathered to make changes to the constitution which will see representation on the board of management change from 2018.

The various categories represented on the board will be removed.

Destination Port Stephens member and tourism operator Frank Future of Imagine Cruises was voted onto the board with a margin of one vote beating Elyse Larkham of Moonshadow

Cruises.

Frank Future told News Of The Area, “I believe that the greatest benefit to tourism in this region will be the establishment of a World Heritage Listing for Port Stephens.”

He believes that the region can achieve the listing in the next few years.

“The other thing I would like to see is the establishment of an interpretive centre which focuses on nature, and our cultural history including the Worimi history,” he said.

Destination Port Stephens told the forum, “Visitation numbers are heading in the right direction with overnight accommodation rates up by 51%.”

He believes that the release of a Trail Guide App for Port Stephens will help day visitors to explore the region and encourage additional overnight stays.

“The launch of the Trail Guides interactive App will help people to discover the gems spread across the vast Port Stephens region,” he said.

HAWKS Nest Lady Golfers held their Annual Charity Day on Tuesday 24 October 2017.

Again it was a very successful fund-raiser with generous donations from our Men and Lady golfers together with the proceeds of a lively “mad” auction and raffle ticket sales.

We made it a fun day and our Professional, Andrew McCormack and his Trainee Professional Zac Leach joined in the fun and, for a donation towards our fund raising, hit our tee shots over the dam on the 18th.

Cotton, Sax and Strings will be playing this Friday 3 November, and promises to be a gig that will be entertaining to one and all.

DJ Cotton of Cotton, Sax and Strings has been a music

As a multi instrumentalist

& music educator, DJ performs throughout Australia both as a session musician and teaching and lecturing on music technology in various schools and private studios.

DJ covers a massive range of musical styles during his solo show, from classic rock to pop, RnB and jazz.

Bowls Champ for Games

q Chris Kent, future Bowls champ, is trying to realise his dream of volunteering at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

CHRIS Kent, 17, is on a mission, to fulfill a dream with his chosen sport.

Chris has been accepted to be a volunteer at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, specifically at the Lawn Bowls event.

It is an event that Chris would no doubt have aspirations of participating in himself at future games.

But until then, volunteering will have to do.

Chris has been an avid lover of the sport of Lawn Bowls since he was introduced to it in 2013, when he innocently chose it to be his weekly sport at school.

It didn’t take long for Raymond Terrace club member Allan Webster to recognise an avid young bowler in Chris, and enquired as to whether he would be interested in bowling competitively for

the club.

Chris accepted and became one of the original members of the Jets Junior Academy which involves training two days a week under the tutelage of professional lawn bowlers including Matthew Baus, Lennon Scott, Jason Stokes and former Irrawang High student Natasha Scott, who herself has just won four back to back state titles and has already been a threetime world champion.

Chris’ own achievements on the bowling green have been thanks to his tutelage in the Jets Junior Academy.

Some of these include a 7-grade pennant as a member of the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club in 2016 with fellow junior Blair Soars, 2017 Teralba Winter Triples Carnival champion alongside Ross Gardiner and Adrian Solomons, runner up in the 2017 Zone 2 Junior Triples and Chris also won

the inaugural Raymond Terrace Bowling Club Junior Pairs alongside Cody Ross.

It is hard to argue with Chris’ talent and passion for the sport of Lawn Bowls, and this passion is what has driven him to become a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games.

Chris’s mother Tracey told News Of The Area, “We are so proud of Chris, all that he has done with his dedication to his sport, and his dream to participate in this role at the games.”

“However, as such, Chris is required to incur all expenses for this trip, therefore, his father Mark and have set up a Go Fund Me page in the hope of raising the funds required for Chris to realise his dream.”
