By Tara CAMPBELL WE are all aware of the impacts of COVID-19 on our contact with other humans, however many haven’t considered just how animals are coping with the lack of visitors at wildlife parks Oakvale Wildlife Park is usually filled with a range of guests who are happily greeted by many of the free-range animals in the park but since lockdowns were enforced, the park has to close its gates.

Park Curator Angela Lambert began to notice changes in the behaviour of the animals, some predictable, and some not so much.

“Currently with no visitors on site, they are quite a handful for our keepers, and are consequently causing havoc, chasing the keepers for attention and food that they would normally receive from our guests,” Angela told News Of The Area.

THERE are a growing number of industries and businesses making their stances clear on vaccines; stating that their employees will need to get the jab or not have a job as parts of NSW head into week eleven of lockdowns.

QANTAS and fruit and vegetable processor SPC were amongst the first to take this position, which was bolstered by a NSW Government mandate that essential workers from hot spot councils and Local Government Areas of Concern receive the vaccine.

Business leaders are calling for the Government to legislate rather than put the onus of policy around workers’ vaccination on small businesses.

The NSW has mandated that, “From 30 September 2021, a health care worker must have received at least one dose of a COVID 19 vaccine in order to work.

“From 30 November 2021, a health care worker must have had at least two doses of a COVID 19 vaccine, unless the health care worker produces a medical contraindication certificate (in a form approved

by NSW Health).”

Potentially even more motivating for many to get

vaccinated is the belief that QR code check-ins will also confirm our vaccination status and whether we are eligible to enter pubs and hospitality venues when these businesses open back up for in house dining.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has stated that new freedoms will be there for the

vaccinated once we reach 70% and 80% double vaccinated stating “life will be better than it is now”.

The Premier stated in her Sunday briefing to the people of NSW, “We can definitely foreshadow that once we hit that 70% double dose, that life will feel much better in NSW for those that are fully

vaccinated fully will be able to participate in things that we have missed out on for a long time.”

While increased supplies of Pfizer vaccines are arriving in the state, the Premier made it clear that these doses are heading into LGA’s Of Concern, leaving people in regional areas wondering how they

will be a part of the planned unlocking of the state if the Pfizer vaccine is simply not available to them.

“The 70-80% is based on people over the age of 16.

“We are still focusing on making sure we provide vaccination to people living in those areas of concern.

“That has not changed

from day one…we have to make sure we vaccinate people in those areas of concern as a priority… come October, supply won’t be an issue.”

When queried about the lockdown in regional areas the Premier stated, “Wherever we can ease the burden on our citizens, of course we will.”

A SENATE inquiry is being launched into the Government’s lack of provision of GPs to the Hunter Region.

Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson is thrilled that there will finally be action, after fighting since 2017 with her informational campaign about the changes to regional bulk billing incentives that have resulted in less GP’s across the Hunter.

Meryl Swanson has raised this matter in Parliament on multiple occasions, and after thousands of signatures on her petition, the Hunter region will be subject to a Senate Inquiry.

“The pandemic has exacerbated access problems in the health system, and GP’s have been critical to keeping people safe and supported during the lockdowns.

“They have been at the frontline of the pandemic, supporting people with existing health issues and ensuring patients understand the real danger of COVID-19,” Ms Swanson said.

With the population in Port Stephens being one of the oldest, aging communities in Australia, the inquiry will also look into access issues for regional communities, GP shortages and incentives to ensure that regional communities have continuity in the care being provided.

Ms Swanson also expresses her concerns for mental health support services with the lack of GPs in the area.

“Labor called on this inquiry because we need a solution to this problem; for eight years, the Government has neglected the rise in mental health issues across regional communities.

“If someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, they need prompt access to their GP,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.

Meryl Swanson and her team believe that Medicare and Health Services should never be on the table when it comes to making Federal cuts.

“The Government

unashamedly has cut GP recruitment targets, cut Medicare rebates and undermine regional health services, all at the time of a pandemic.

“The pandemic has amplified local shortages, and we must get

a real long-term solution to this problem,” Ms Swanson said.

Ms Murray said legislation was the best prevention against suicide rates increasing, particularly given the major government decisions about economic, employee and welfare to support Australia’s COVIDrepair and recovery.

“There have never been more lives lost to suicide in this country,” said Ms Murray.

“Australia needs a national Suicide Prevention Act and we need to act now.

“We all have a role to play in preventing suicide.

“An Act will legislate a whole-of-government priority to prevent suicide and focus the attention of every agency to address the risk of suicide across our community.

“Suicide prevention isn’t limited to health portfolios.

“Housing is suicide prevention, employment is suicide prevention, finance is suicide prevention, and education is suicide prevention.

“We know social and economic isolation are the biggest drivers of suicide rates

and COVID-19 has seen Australians subject to 18 months of rolling lockdowns and disruption to their personal lives, employment and businesses.

“We’ve seen how quickly COVID-19 cases can get out of hand and we need to have the same national policy focus and vigilance to stop suicide rates doing the same.

“The fact an overwhelming majority of Australians support this low-cost, low-risk, lowimpact, high-outcome option should be the green light the Federal Government needs.

“The heightened economic and social threat posed by COVID-19 means we cannot afford to wait to legislate,” said Ms Murray.

Australia’s annual suicide rate (3,318) are currently more-thanthree times that of deaths from COVID-19 (1,012).

According to the Federal Government’s Australian Institute of Health & Welfare, “While an individual’s reasons are personal and often complex, overall peaks and troughs in rates and numbers of deaths by suicide coincide— more or less—with social and economic events.”

Sadly, in the past year, one in

four (25%) Australians say they know someone in their personal life or networks, who has died by or attempted suicide either directly (15%) or indirectly (11%) and more than one in four (27%) Australians say they have ever directly (16%) or indirectly (16%) sought help or searched for advice from a suicide prevention service in the past 12 months.

Australians believe that the people most at risk of suicide over the next 12 months are young people 12-25 years (42%), middleaged Australians 25-55 years (29%) and men (29%).

Other groups thought to be most at risk include Australians living in regional and rural areas (24%), LGBTQI Australians (21%), Indigenous Australians (18%) and older Australians 55+ years (18%).

Two thirds (66%) of Australians agree, when advised of successes achieved by similar legislation in Japan, that Australia should introduce a standalone Suicide Prevention Act similar to Japan, that looks to take a whole-of-government and not just a health approach to suicide prevention.

Of the remainder just 8% disagree with this sentiment.

MINDFULNESS and meditation are tools that many of us have accessed during the long road to living a COVID-normal life.

However for many the toll of the pandemic has hit hard and more help is needed simply to save lives.

Now one in four Australians report knowing someone who died by suicide during the past 12 months of the pandemic – the equivalent of 5 million people – with social isolation, the economy and jobs driving concerns, particularly amongst women.

This comes as two-thirds of Australians (66%) back the Federal Government introducing a standalone national suicide prevention act requiring all government decisions to consider and mitigate suicide risks two years in a row.

The findings are from Suicide Prevention Australia’s second State of the Nation report, which will be officially released on World Suicide Prevention Day 2021 (Friday, 10 September).

Boosting housing in the Hunter ASPIRING homeowners and local planning experts from the Hunter were among those who participated in the Regional Housing Taskforce virtual roadshow to share ideas on how the NSW Government can unlock much-needed housing in the region.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the influx of people moving from cities to regional areas was good news, but

was putting more pressure on local housing supply.

“The housing market in the Hunter is very different to Sydney, and the roundtable was a fantastic opportunity for locals looking to rent, buy or invest to share their experiences with the taskforce,” Mr Martin said.

“Boosting housing supply will be crucial to supporting the growth of our region, particularly as more

people realise the benefits of a tree change.

“I want to thank everyone from the Hunter who took part in the roundtables.

“Your ideas will be heard by the state’s key decision makers and help to keep regional NSW thriving into the future.”

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said despite the current lockdown, the taskforce had

been overwhelmed by participation in the two-week virtual roadshow.

“We asked the taskforce to investigate the drivers of housing pressure in the regions and by the sheer level of community interest, I’m optimistic we will have a clear picture of the unique housing challenges in each region,” Mr Stokes said.

“The taskforce will take what they’ve heard and develop

recommendations for how we can deliver innovative solutions to create more housing opportunities.”

The Regional Housing Taskforce will prepare an independent report with recommendations to the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes, on how the NSW Government can utilise the planning system to stimulate housing supply in the regions.

By Tara CAMPBELL A PLANNING proposal to rezone 42 Fullerton Cove Road, Fullerton Cove is in early stages.

This proposal aims to rezone the land to suit a neighbourhood centre, with neighbourhood supermarket, for local day to day retail convenience and services within the Fern Bay area.

This proposal also states that it will protect and manage biodiversity values and flood prone land.

Many local groups on social media are spreading discussions of other alleged proposals, however Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer has silenced this.

There is currently no land zoned in Fullerton Cove or Fern Bay for neighbourhood shops, however a rezoning request was lodged at 42 Fullerton Cove Road, Fullerton Cove in 2020.

“This rezoning is still at an early stage of the process and is yet to be

publicly exhibited.

“No other development proposals have been lodged with Council for commercial development in the area,” Mr Palmer said.

The proposal’s goal is to rezone a 6.7 hectare site at 42 Fullerton Cove

Road from RU2 Rural Landscape to B1 Neighbourhood Centre and E2 Environmental Conservation to enable the development of a neighbourhood supermarket and centre.

Port Stephens Council has

identified three options to achieve the objectives of the planning proposal being: develop land already zoned B1 Neighbourhood Centre at Seaside Estate (500-600 metres east of the site); rezone the Stockton Residential Centre for a new town centre; or

“Our newest stream, the Local Strengthening Fund, aims to enhance the wellbeing and development of the Port Stephens community.

“We also have streams to reinvigorate our streets and neighbourhoods, support local businesses, and enhance the social, cultural, environmental and economic life of our communities.

“We’ve invested significant funds through our funding programs for over a decade now, and it’s wonderful to see the results – new public art, community activities and events, protecting our environment and much more.

“Whether you’re a creative, community group, not-for-profit, businesses or something else – there’s a funding stream for you. I encourage you to read the

guidelines and be inspired to start planning a new event, program, experience or community initiative.

“This year, we are using the SmartyGrants platform to make the application process even easier.

“Please read the guidelines and contact our team to discuss your project and get some helpful tips for a successful application,” he said.

Most funding streams are open year-round, while others have 2 rounds to apply.

The first round is open from 1 September to 5 October 2021.

A webinar will be made available on Wednesday 13 September 2021 to provide tips and tricks for a successful application.

Raymond Terrace Family Practice wins award

RAYMOND Terrace Family Practice has been recognised with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Award.

Raymond Terrace Family Practice has worked tirelessly to provide services including general medical practice, assistance with psychological problems, lifestyle counselling and minor surgery as well as the Respiratory Clinic providing AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines to the community.

The practice is thrilled to receive the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners 2021 award for ‘NSW General Practice of the Year’.

Dr Sarah Baylay GP, owner at Raymond Terrace General Practice said she was shocked to even be nominated and is beyond grateful to receive the award.

“We were quite shocked that we were nominated and then won practice of the year, and we’re excited because it means a lot about many areas of our practice.

“In the past year our practice has really expanded and it’s not one part of our practice that has won this award- it’s all of us,” Dr Baylay said.

When the Royal Australian General Practitioners consider this award, they look at what each practice does, their teaching, care for the patients

and treatment of staff.

Dr Elizabeth Kaiko, one of the Practice Principals, has been with Raymond Terrace Family Practice since 1990 and is incredibly proud of the staff’s dedication in the past twelve months.

“We are so proud of our staff members who have stepped in and stepped up to the increasing demands of the vaccine rollout and I’m delighted to work with such a cooperative group of people in such a cooperative environment,” Dr Kaiko said.

The Practice will now compete for the national title of Practice of The Year in November when it will go up against winners from the other states.

The Fund will provide grants from $100,000 up to $1 million to eligible sport and recreation organisations and councils.

Round 1 of the program resulted in $54 million being awarded to 91 projects.

They included $1 million to Snow Australia for community snow sport facilities at the National Snowsports Training Centre (NSTC) at Jindabyne, $1 million for a new skate park at Wyatt Action Sports Campus in Lidcombe and $937,500

for a new grandstand and amenities at Darling Street Oval, Newcastle.

Round 2 is the final round of the program and sporting organisations and councils are urged to apply.

The grant application and assessment process will be

overseen by an independent probity advisor.

Applications are now open and will close on 8 October 2021.

TO SCENT OR NOT TO SCENT?

LOCALS are up in arms at the time it takes to get COVID-19 test results back.

This is now more important than ever with the region experiencing a growth in exposure sites and cases.

Fortunately there is some hope on the horizon with some new services available and extended hours at testing sites.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “Too many people have been forced to wait too long to receive their test results.

“I’m wondering what you think about candles, scents or incense as part of property presentation?”

YOU raise a relevant point. To scent or not to scent is a highly personal choice and one that has a very big impact on a buyer’s first impression. It’s important to have your home smelling sweet and fresh and as a starting point I always suggest a vendor give their home a thorough clean of all surfaces, carpets and upholstery too if that’s possible, as odour is a fact of daily life – especially if pets are part of your family. It may be that this is all you do and if you select a cleaning product with a fresh, discreet and not too sweet aroma, such as lemon myrtle, the aroma will linger gently at inspection time. If you prefer to ‘scent’, whether you choose fresh flowers, candles or plug-ins, it’s vital the aroma is consistent throughout. Avoid mixing aromas or choosing a single scent that is over-powering. You don’t want buyers curling their nostrils or holding their breath through the inspection!!! And definitely avoid incense, it’s very personal, way too strong and can repel. Select something fresh, light and discreet and you’ll create the right first impression.

Protecting Koala Habitat

PORT Stephens has a diverse and incredible set of natural assets.

There is more to our being ‘Incredible By Nature’ than our beaches and waterways.

The region is home to a diverse range of environments; from littoral rainforests to Koala corridors and habitats which are protected from development and clearing to assist in the survival of endangered flora and fauna.

Local environmentals are concerned that a property in Anna Bay, which is considered koala habitat, has been stocked with goats by its owner.

Goats are known to be land clearers and are considered a pest where their populations are

roaming through our national parks.

The Environment NSW website states, ‘goats eat native plants – as selective feeders, feral goats can quickly reduce the diversity of plant species by overgrazing and preventing the regeneration of some trees and shrubs and by allowing those plants resistant to grazing to replace original forest; compete with native animals for food, water and shelter; cause soil erosion through over grazing and trampling vegetation ground cover; can compete with domestic livestock for resources; can spread disease to native animals and domestic livestock – feral goats are hosts to many sheep diseases and a potential host of foot and mouth disease and damage Aboriginal heritage sites’.

Competition and habitat degradation by feral goats has been listed as a key threatening process in NSW by the NSW Scientific Committee.

While the goats on the property are not feral they are the same animal and are well known for their vivacious appetites.

Port Stephens Council are now working with the owner to see the removal of the goats in the near future.

A Port Stephens Council spokesperson told News Of The Area, “We’re working with the owner to develop a voluntary agreement on how weeds are managed on the site including removing the goats in the near future.

“Recent inspections of the site revealed fresh koala droppings, which shows that koalas are still active in the area.”

Funding for Hunter Councils

LOCAL Governments in the Hunter Region have received their first 2021-22 quarterly payment through the Federal Government’s Financial Assistance Grant program.

Liberal Patron Senator for the Hunter Region Hollie Hughes said the funding is untied, meaning that Councils can spend the grant according to their own local priorities.

“Local Governments are an important delivery partner for the Federal Government’s economic stimulus packages, playing a critical role in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We know the early payment is a valued support to Councils, particularly in regions that have faced the combined impacts of bushfire, drought, floods and COVID-19.

Testing Times

“If someone is waiting four to seven days to receive their result, that seriously impacts their life, particularly if they can’t work from home.

“I’ve been pushing for additional testing sites across Port Stephens, and I’m relieved two new testing clinics have been set up in Raymond Terrace and Anna Bay. “The only way we’re going to overcome this outbreak is for everyone to get tested if they have the slightest of symptoms.

“That’s why it’s so important to have quick and convenient local testing options, to enable people to do the right thing and protect themselves and our community.”

A new testing facility has been opened up at Anna Bay on Nelson Bay Road which fortunately preempted the two shifts worked by an infected worker at Liquorland at Salamander Bay. Local family pathology practice of more than 40 years Medtech Services who are partnered with 4Cyte Pathology have been providing our region with Covid-19 testing since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 4Cyte Pathology Pop Up Drive Thru Clinic is located at HopeUC Church Carpark, 4236 Nelson Bay Road, Anna Bay NSW 2316 and is open 7.30am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday with the service making the commitment to expand operating times and days based on demand.

Nick Burns of Medtech said, “We were acutely aware of the need for reliable testing turnaround times for results.

“In the beginning this was most important for those needing to access their medical treatments, but quickly included the need for clearance testing for patients to return to work, students to attend school etc…as we have all now grown accustomed to.

“Together with our laboratory partner 4Cyte Pathology, we have been able to provide reliability in Covid-19 testing result times for the better part of 18 months now.

“Our local team based at our Wallsend hub have been a big part of that, doing much of the preanalytical specimen processing.

“Helping to keep our testing capacity expandable, and test result times as fast as possible, we recently introduced an electronic patient check-in system at our drive-thru testing clinics, which also makes the drive-thru experience much faster for patients,” he said. q

“Across the nation, Local Governments employ around 194,000 people and deliver a wide range of services in the cities, regional towns and remote areas of Australia.

“This support will continue to bolster Australia’s economic recovery,” said Senator Hughes.

Port Stephens Council will receive quarterly payments of $895,952.

Assistant Minister for Local Government Kevin Hogan said a total of $2.7 billion in untied Federal funding was allocated for Local Governments in 2021–22.

Offering A Helping Hand

HOSPITALITY businesses in Port Stephens have reverted to take-away only service during the current lockdown, and Taylors Bistro at Soldiers Point Bowling Club have stepped up to do their bit for the community.

There are many families across Port Stephens doing it tough through lockdowns, with support from state and federal agencies not filling all the gaps.

On top of their take-away meal offering, the team at Taylors Bistro are also making meals which are being donated to people who are in need of a helping hand in these tough times.

Stepping up for Prostate Cancer awareness

ANYONE who has lost a family member or friend to Cancer is aware of just how heartbreaking it is.

For Medowie local Karen McVey, within a matter of years she had lost her mother to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, and one year ago, lost her father to Prostate Cancer.

For many months, Karen didn’t have the words to speak up about her father’s battle, but now, she’s stepping up in September for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, participating in ‘The Long Run’.

Through the month of September, Karen will be walking 72km to raise funds and spread awareness for Prostate Cancer.

“I’m aware first hand of how this disease impacts not just those who are undergoing treatment, but all those around them; their family and friends who don’t know what to do to support them.

“You can’t put into words the emotional devastation that Prostate Cancer causes, and so I’m doing everything I can to make sure that no one has to go through something like that in the future.”

When she created her campaign, Karen didn’t know if people would actually donate, and set an initial target of raising $500, but she quickly surpassed this.

Karen then changed her target to be $1,111, an ‘Angel Number’ that her mother used to talk about and consistently notice and after her passing, Karen’s father would see 11:11 and the family would know that Karen’s mother was around.

Her family has certainly been around supporting Karen’s fundraising, with less than a week into her efforts having already met her new target.

“I think about what my father went through, and this is absolutely nothing in comparison to that, so I feel like I just have to get out there and do it,” Karen said.

Her most important message to the community is to get regular check-ups with their GP and to not be afraid to get a second opinion throughout any stage of cancer diagnosis or treatment.

“It truly is an incredible, painfully emotional journey but knowing that you can reach out for support makes a huge difference to how you get through this.

“I will continue to support the Prostate Cancer

“She consistently produces high quality meals at affordable prices for our Members and Guests.

“We are very proud of Lesley’s selfless efforts during the current lockdown whereby she is preparing meals for people in need.

“These efforts are a testament to Lesley’s character and in these trying times her

generosity brings a little bit of happiness to people’s lives,” he said.

Meals have been distributed through organisations including the Yacaaba Centre but individuals can also access meals directly.

Lesley Taylor told News Of The Area, “All someone has to do to access meals from Taylors Bistro is to call Lesley direct on 0425 805 667.”

The meals are cooked in bulk and local suppliers have been assisting with the costs by providing discounts and free ingredients where they can.

The meals include a delicious penne pasta and chicken chasseur this week which are supplied frozen.

Lesley hopes that by providing these “off menu” meals to those in need that she and her team are helping the community move forward through these tough times.

“I love this community, the people I work with and the place that we now call home.”

She is thankful that she is part of the Soldiers Point Bowling Club team.

THE State’s sports infrastructure boom is set for a further boost, with the opening of the latest round of a $100 million funding program by the NSW Government.

Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said the funding would be available for new and upgraded sports facilities in Round 2 of the Greater Cities and Regional Sport Facility Fund.

“This fund is not just an important boost for local economies and jobs, but also promotes health and wellbeing for residents across NSW,” Mrs Ward said.

“By investing in new and existing sports infrastructure, we are helping more people experience the benefits of participating in sport and active recreation.

“The Fund is creating a sports infrastructure construction boom across the State as part of the NSW Government’s multi-billion dollar infrastructure pipeline.”

q The Fund will provide grants from $100,000 up to $1 million to eligible sport and recreation organisations and councils.
