standstill as tourists headed for the water with near perfect conditions to pull out the swimwear and SUPs. The usual bottlenecks through Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay provided the familiar frustrations for locals and visitors alike, but Anna Bay required the services of law enforcement to control the traffic flow on Sunday.

Local photographer Phillip Craig captured the scenes over the weekend and said it was great to see the region back to life.

“There were two lines of camel rides operating, with big queues at Crest on the take away bar,” said Mr Craig.

“Great to see so many enjoying our lovely area, but there were very

large crowds with the carparks at Robinson Reserve full!”

For the most it was only patience that was being tested though and there was only one major incident across the break as a 19-year-old driver crashed his utility into a Shoal Bay apartment block on Saturday night returning a positive breath test.

$10,000 donation to refurbish community hub

THE former Girls Guides hall in Tanilba Bay is set for a dramatic makeover, thanks to a $10,000 donation from Komatsu Australia.

Todd Hutton and Scott Curtis applied for the donation through their employer as part of Komatsu’s Live Your Dream Program, which invites employees to propose worthy community projects for the global heavy machinery corporation to support.

Scott and Todd specified the Smith Family as their chosen community group, who suggested refurbishing the Girl Guides hall with the donation.

“They outlined that the hall needed to be done up, and it’s a project that we can be hands on with as well.

“We think we can really make a difference here,” said Scott.

Natasha Reece, Project Manager, Facilitating Partner Team, Smith Family Communities for Children Initiative, said the refurbished hall, currently used by Centre for Hope as a youth drop-in centre in the afternoons and evenings twice a week, would be transformed into a community hub.

“Centre for Hope were really keen to turn the space into a community hub and to get it used in the daytime as well,” said Natasha.

“When completed the hall will be used for things like play groups, school transition groups, parenting programs, counselling, cooking and exercise groups,” she said.

The hall will now be shared with organisations including the Centre for Hope, KU Children's Services, Save the Children, Interrelate Ltd, Samaritans Foundation, and the Family Action Centre of the University of Newcastle.

Geraldine Moran, CEO of Centre for Hope, said she

was excited for the future of the hall and the impact it would have on young people in Tanilba Bay. “The young people will see value in themselves, from the value they see people putting into this centre.

“It will reflect to them how important they are to the community.

“The Smith Family do wonderful things and we feel so privileged to be a part of it,” she said.

While Scott and Todd were instrumental in securing the funding for the project, their impact does not stop there, with the pair offering their skills, time, and connections to complete much of the refurbishment work themselves.

“Komatsu is giving us two weeks off to work on the hall. We will get the big wide brim hat on and get into it. We should have enough to keep us busy for a few weeks,” said Scott.

The pair are beginning work from 19 October and invite the community down to the hall to lend a hand.

“All are welcome,” Todd said.

“Many hands make light work.”

The hall refurbishment project has also received generous offers of assistance from

several local businesses, including free concreting, excavation, and labouring.

While not finalised, the project is likely to include new fencing for the hall, a patio area, rejuvenation of the kitchen and a focus on enhancing the natural beauty of the space with native plants and trees.

Annual award nominations open PORT Stephens Council is calling for the community to nominate local heroes who have supported others through COVID-19 in the Annual Awards.

Held on Australia Day each year, the awards are an opportunity to recognise the people who have made an outstanding contribution to our place.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says this year’s awards will be a little bit different and asks the community to recognise those who have supported others during this challenging time.

“2020 has been a tough year for many and I think it’s more important than ever to recognise and celebrate those local heroes who have gone above and beyond to support our community.

Car crash collapsed complex wall

POLICE are investigating a crash where the driver of vehicle crashed into a unit complex at Shoal Bay, which caused severe structural damage to the building.

The crash happened just before 5.00pm on Saturday 3 October 2020. Police received reports of a Toyota Hilux being driven along Shoal Bay Road, Shoal Bay, had collided with the exterior wall of a unit complex.

When nearby residents heard the crash and went to investigate, the driver allegedly reversed into a load-bearing wall of the same unit complex, causing part of the wall to collapse.

Residents of the unit complex managed to self-evacuate without injury or incident.

The vehicle drove off on Shoal Bay Road.

Police later received further reports the same vehicle had crashed into a timber fence at Mistral Close at nearby Nelson Bay.

Officers attended the location and found a 19-year-old man in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

The man was subjected to a breath test, which allegedly returned a positive reading.

He was arrested and taken to Nelson Bay Police Station for the purpose of a breath analysis. While in the police station, the man suffered a medical episode, which required treatment by ambulance officers.

He was taken to Tomaree Hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

As part of the investigation, officers will await the results of a blood sample before taking any formal action against the man.

Fire and Rescue NSW have assessed the damage to the unit wall and have determined that a structural engineer will be needed to conduct a further examination of the wall.

Inquiries are continuing.

THIS Saturday is World Mental Health Day and some locals have launched the Port Stephens arm of OneWave, which is a non-profit surf community, to tackle mental health issues with a simple recipe of fluro, saltwater, surfing, good friends and open conversations.

OneWave Port Stephens founders include Tara Jackson, Karen O’Toole, Alex Warden, Roxy White, Chris WigmansLake and Jodi Hooker who will be holding monthly free Fluro Salty Saturday’s at local beaches for mental health.

The first Fluro Salty Saturday will run from 6:30am this Saturday at Birubi with the meeting point at the Robinson Reserve carpark where participants are encouraged to get funky in fluro and hit the waves or simply hang out with mates swimming or doing a bit of yoga.

OneWave spokesperson Jodi Hooker said that the initiative was all about helping people open up about their mental health issues in a safe and fun environment.

New Easier QR Codes

RESIDENTS and businesses in Port Stephens and the Myall Coast can help stop the spread of COVID-19 by using Service NSW’s new Safe Checkin QR code.

The new Safe Check-in QR code has landed just in time for the busy school holiday period and will assist in streamlining entry into businesses.

Registering your details when

you visit some businesses is a COVID-19 requirement and is vital in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Checking in allows NSW Health to contact you quickly to ensure outbreaks are contained.

The new App’s Check-in feature automatically checks you in using data Service NSW already has – whether via our drivers licences or any other NSW Government service.

That means we don’t have to

enter our details everytime we enter a business, just scan the QR code.

To access the technology download the Service NSW app on your phone - you might already have it there with your driver's licence.

Then look out for businesses that are displaying a Service NSW Safe Check-in QR code.

The check-in automatically records the date, time and location, and stores these details securely on

a NSW Government database for the sole purpose of COVID-19 contact tracing.

After 28 days, the data is destroyed.

Community Projects growing our Community

THE Rotary Club of Salamander Bay Rotary Club and the Salvation Army have collaborated to create a safe place for reflection.

The garden is a combined effort which is being funded by a Port Stephens Council grant of $6,000.

It is anticipated that the project will take around 5-6 months to complete.

Peter North, President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, told News Of The Area, “Rotary will be providing the labour and they will liaise with the Salvation Army for their expertise.

“We have engaged a landscaper Jane Parker who

has designed the garden and the first working bee will be held on 7 October.

“You don’t have to be a Roatarian to be involved in helping create the garden,” he said.

The Club has several projects at the moment and Peter is very pleased that the roundabout project [at the entry to the Bay] is going ahead.

The roundabout will be subjected to a two week makeover which will enhance the entrance to the Bay. “Everyone’s invited and it’s open to all ages and abilities.”

Karen and the OneWave Port Stephens crew are urging all residents and visitors alike to get in their fluros and check out the free event.

“Fluro really starts a conversation and gets people asking why we’re dressed up,” said Karen.

Sharkies Diffuse Bombers

By Mitch LEES THE U17s Northern Sharks boys, which are a Port Stephens Power and Nelson Bay Marlins joint venture, took on the Killarney Vale Bombers at Ferodale Oval, Medowie and were able to extinguish their opposition 12.11-83 to 8.8-56.

The Bombers came out hard and fast against the Sharkies and looked explosive in the opening quarter as they slotted multiple unanswered majors.

The Bombers further expanded their lead in the second stanza and the Sharkies were running on empty as the Killarney Vale outfit applied the blowtorch to lead 41 to 24 at the main break.

The Sharkies weren’t cooked yet however as the young pups fired up for the third quarter that saw them apply enough defensive pressure to hold the Bombers to two behinds.

THE Federal Government believes that gas is potentially the answer to securing the Hunters energy supply.

Last spring and summer saw rolling closures at Tomago Aluminium to secure power for households.

In a recent visit to Port Stephens, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his Government was looking at ways of harnessing cheap and sustainable energy in the Hunter.

“Whether it's the gas feedstock that goes into businesses or whether it's the cost of the power itself, we have to have ways of getting that down to a sustainable and consistent level, it's about getting it down and keeping it down.

“I want to focus on something that will happen, and we know that we can get something up here in Newcastle with a gasfired plant,” said Scott Morrison.

However, Alisha Onslow of Climate Action Port Stephens believes that billions for the gas industry will not benefit most Australians and would have negative impacts on climate change and energy prices.

She told News Of The Area, “A recent analysis from The Australia Institute clearly shows how using COVID-19 recovery funds to subsidise the gas industry would create few jobs while increasing climate pollution and locking in higher energy prices.”

Ms Onslow said that Australia had an opportunity to address growing unemployment rates and rebuild the economy while creating a more sustainable energy future, through a focus on renewables.

“There is independent research completed by reputable and credible organisations from across Australia that shows we can create thousands of secure jobs for the future that don’t make the climate crisis worse.

“Including, for example, the Beyond Zero Emissions Million Jobs Plan which sets out a framework to rebuild our nation through practical projects that can restore the economy, modernise industry and reskill our workforce across seven key sectors including energy, building, manufacturing, transport, recycling, land use, and training.

“50,000 of which were identified for the Hunter Region,” she said.

We know how hard our community has been hit by the effects of COVID-19 and as part of our response we are working hard to restart our local economy by creating attractive and safe public spaces.

In the lead up to Christmas, we’re starting to make improvements to retail and café spaces in the Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay town centres to create more public seating and support physical distancing.

We’re also delivering a new pop-up cycleway around Fly Point, connecting Nelson Bay and Little Beach with a safer route between the town centre and beach.

This will ensure we can maintain the safety of our community while supporting our local business and tourism industries, encouraging people back into our public spaces and to enjoy social connection when it’s safe to do so.

We’re also getting ready to launch smart parking in the Nelson Bay town centre to make finding a park easier and simpler than ever before.

You’ll be able to find a park via digital signage and use your rego plate as your ticket.

As the holiday season fast approaches, it’s an important reminder that we need to continue to be aware of COVID-19. As we start visiting our local beaches, parks and recreational spaces more, let’s continue to stay safe by practising physical distancing, good hygiene and following the NSW public health orders.

WHEN times are hard you can be sure that the local Lions Club will be there.

When there are storms and the SES are out fixing the roofs, or the RFS are fighting fires, the Soldiers Point Lions will not be far away cooking a BBQ to feed our volunteer first responders.

At present the Soldiers Point Lions have been rather busy despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sharon Blunt of the Soldiers Point Lions Club told News Of The Area, “We held our First BBQ a few weeks ago with the Fingal Bomboras to raise funds for Bella Howard.

“We were able to donate the funds towards the building of a special garden for Bella,” she said.

Over the past few years Lions has been assisting both Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre and the Yaccaba Centre.

Both centres run emergency relief programs for members of our community who have experienced financial hardship.

This has become even more vital for members of the community with high rates of unemployment in the region.

Lions members each month do the shopping for the centres, buying staples that will feed families.

They deliver the goods to each centre every second month.

This task usually falls on Sharon Blunt and Virginia Andrews who have become very savvy shoppers and for

the Lions Clubs outlay of $150 each month we can fill two trolleys and load the centres pantries so they can then make up hampers to assist the relief programs.

If you see the Lions make sure you stop by and grab a sausage sandwich or perhaps something more substantial.

When you do you can rest assured that you are not just filling your belly but the bellies of some of those in need in our community.

The Soldiers Point Lions Club is always keen for new members to assist in our programs so if you wish to volunteer your time, the Club would welcome your support.

Every cent raised by Lions goes directly back to support our community.

Shaved her head to raise money for cancer research

BEING brave, Gabs McMann has shaved her head to raise money for cancer research.

Gabs is one of five girls and she was motivated to shave her head to raise money after a second sister was diagnosed with breast cancer.

One sister has come through treatment, the other was diagnosed in January this year.

Gabs McMann told News Of The Area, “I’ve known too many people who have been diagnosed with cancer.”

On hearing of her second sister's diagnosis, she questioned “What can I do?”

“I saw an

advertisement for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation and I thought I can raise money for that.”

This was something that Gabs could do that would help to make a difference.

“I have raised $2042 so far and I am still taking donations,” she said.

The Foundation supports research into all different forms of cancer.

Uncle John Ridgeway

MEETING Worimi elder John Ridgeway and having the opportunity to hear his story is a rare privilege.

Uncle John Ridgeway is now in his eighties.

He grew up on the mission in Karuah, and has been recognised for his contribution to the community.

In 2006 Worimi Elder, Uncle John Ridgeway was awarded Port Stephens ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and received the Prime Minister and Premiers award for his community work.

In 2007 John Ridgeway was also awarded Port Stephens

Citizen of the Year.

Not long after this he was awarded an OAM for his services to the community.

It is not the awards that make the man, it is his unique story.

From attending school in Karuah on the mission to leaving school at age 14 to start working on the oyster leases at Oyster Cove and cutting timber at the Myall Lakes with his brother for the Masonite factory in Raymond Terrace, Uncle John had a very physical career.

Uncle John Ridgeway told News Of The Area, “I wasn’t allowed to go to a nonAboriginal school, there was

no electricity, and I lived with my mum and dad and I had 7 siblings, there were 3 boys and 5 girls, I have the opposite 5 boys and 3 girls.

“When I was 14, I told the teacher I had a job, can I leave school? and she said yes you can,” he said.

It was then that he started work on the oyster farm where he worked for 19 years.

Unfortunately uncle John suffered a bout of bowel cancer which led him on another path, one where he brings joy to many through his music.

Uncle John Ridgeway has been entertaining residents at over 30 nursing homes from Hawks Nest, Wallsend, and

Tanilba Bay, to Laurieton, Maitland and beyond for over 27 years.

When he visits nursing homes he sings the old songs so the residents can sing along with them.

He and his wife have also been foster carers, opening their home to children in need.

As an elder John Ridgeway is a passionate custodian of the Worimi language and the conservation of the Stockton sand dunes.

He is also a crack boot thrower, having taken out several wins in the sport at the Indigenous Elder Games.

The bowls were of a high standard and this was acknowledged by the big crowd of spectators at games end.

the team of Chris and Steve Brown 26-15 shots and Paul defeated the combination of Sue Dee and Dave Phillips 20-17 shots.

Advice for Aspiring Writers WITH the annual Port Stephens Literature Awards closing for entries on 30th October, coordinating judge Lloyd Hogg has some advice for aspiring writers.

“You really must capture the reader's attention in the first hundred words or so,” he said. “As with a good novel, the reader needs to be drawn into the story and wants to see how it develops on the next page,” he added. “It's all about roughing out your entry and then working on it until you are satisfied that it has captured what you want to say in an interesting way,” he said.

“Our initial judging panel of ten readers evaluates the entries and those that make the top twenty will have a strong

developing storyline.

They decide on their own 'Readers' Choice' award before handing the short stories on to the three finalists' judges,” he stated.

“We then individually rate them and it's a simple matter of just adding up the points to decide the winners,” he said.

“These will be announced late November. Watch this space for details,” he advised.

The awards have been running for 16 years and draw entries from all Australian states. Club Lemon Tree, News Of The Area and Tilligerry Adult and Community Education (TACE) sponsor them.

‘Is there a ‘best’ way to make a winning offer?’

WHEN you’re ready to make an offer, you’re at the ‘pointy’ end of the house hunting process and it can be both exciting and daunting. Making a winning offer is all about price and timing. The majority of sales in our region are Private Treaty, so asking the Agent if any other offers have been received and if so, what is the highest offer that has been rejected gives you a good guide to where you need to position your offer. You could make a huge offer – asking price or above – but it’s crucial that in doing this, you’re not paying too much. Have your finances sorted. It’s pointless making a ‘winning offer’ only to have finance delayed – or worse – declined. Justify your verbal offer with a letter outlining why you’ve made that offer, including sale price comparisons with other recently sold properties of similar status.

While Agents represent the Vendor, without buyers, the whole process doesn’t work, so they also have your interests at heart.

Do your research, communicate openly and honestly, keep the process simple and you’ll win the Agent’s respect – and hopefully your dream property.

Riding for their lives Brad Morante is cycling for the lives of sick Aussie kids

THE Great Cycle Challenge may be a big test of strength, endurance and resilience for your average bike rider like Brad Morante – but it’s nothing like the challenge that kids with cancer face every day of their little lives.

Every October, tens of thousands of Australians take to their bikes to raise money for the ground-breaking cancer research being done in the labs at Children’s Medical Research Institute.

In the eight years since the challenge started, the riders have raised more than $20 million.

Brad Morante from Hawks Nest has been doing the Great Cycle Challenge since 2017.

In total he has raised more than $24,000 which he credits to his tight knit community.

“The proudest achievement of my life, besides raising my three beautiful kids, is the money I have raised for GCC. “None of which would be possible of course without the amazing support from the townsfolk of this small seaside town, my friends and family that donate each year.’’

One of the people who knows, too well, the importance of cancer research is Amanda Wigman. Her daughter Sophie was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

“This could happen to anyone – it’s a club

that no one wants to be in,” Ms Wigman said.

It was a familiar feeling for Amanda.

She had fought Hodgkin’s Lymphoma as a teenager. She had also lost her mother to cancer.

Children’s Medical Research Institute’s scientist Dr Tony Cesare studies the causes of cancer from the time that our cells are forming.

He thanked all those who have taken part in the Great Cycle Challenge from its inception to today.

“I am enormously thankful for the community fundraising efforts in Australia,’’ Dr Cesare said.

“Community efforts, like the Great Cycle Challenge, have provided my laboratory with essential funding for new cutting-edge projects.

“The positive impact of community efforts inspires our work and gives hope to cancer patients.’’

I recently went on a dating site and clearly said I wanted to ‘date’. Like in the 1960s when you’d go out, get to know each other, kiss if the mood took hold, but basically take it slowly.

The problem is, everyone I’ve met thinks this is just code for being a man whore. Even the ones who don’t want you to move to home base within a few dates are confused as to why you are happily sitting on second base. It’s a minefield out there.

Mr Trent K Dear Mr TK, I think I know the problem here, but before I get to that, I want to clear up this whole ‘base’ thing.

I’m not sure when discussing the various stages of lovemaking, we should do it through euphemisms, particularly ones relating to baseball.

I personally find it a very non-sexual game that not many have had a chance to play. I’m more familiar with the far more female-oriented Vigaro.

We could get into all sorts of derogatory puns here, but this is a family newspaper. Now, with bases, the issue is not everyone uses the same base definitions. First base for some may be hand-holding. For others it may be kissing. As you progress, there is a serious danger of sliding off the base altogether – in fact being completely debased.

Now, to the second matter. Your dating profile. You’ve said you wanted to ‘date’ like in the ‘1960s’. Mr TK, I don’t know how much time you’ve spent in the 1960s, but it wasn’t called the Swinging 60s for nothing. I had to question some people who had dated in that era and they told me it was a veritable hotbed of hedonism and debauchery.

A time when fashion, writing, art, music, and the very closely related concept of sexual freedom flourished. A time when Nina Simone was singing about wanting a little sugar in her bowl, Zeppelin was howling about a whole lotta love and Aretha was feeling like a natural woman (she wasn’t singing about quinoa here, Mr TK).

Why not try meeting women in different places, like the school gate?

Those ones will be too emotionally and physically exhausted to want anything more than a Bex and a good lie down.

LOCAL fundraising group The Pearls of Port Stephens have continued to support the community through monitory donations, food and the purchase of clothes during a difficult 2020 and COVID pandemic.

Some of the recent activities the Pearls have supported include the purchase of a child car seat for the Care Flight Transport van which runs a service from Newcastle Airport to John Hunter Hospital.

Care Flight Nurse Beccy Gillespie said,” the installation of the car seat will be used for children from birth to 8 years old and make their trip to the hospital more comfortable

as they will be able to sit up if well enough, it's a greatly appreciated donation by the Pearls to Care Flight."

A $1000.00 donation was made to Blaze Aid for local distribution after the devastation of unprecedented bushfires.

Co-ordinating the purchase of infant food, nappies and bottles which were sent to the port city of Beirut immediately after the horrific blast that took place in August, these goods were purchased locally and air freighted in a container, as part of a fast-acting Newcastle based emergency drive orchestrated by a Lebanese restaurant owner in Islington called Downtown Beirut, the

goods were distributed by the Red Cross when they arrived.

Also purchased locally were pantry supplies, delivered to Got Your Back Sista, a centre which offers help for women and children escaping the trauma of domestic violence.

The most recent Pearls donation of $200.00 was made to The Myall Coast Toy Library a well deserving volunteer run, not-for-profit organisation offering a wonderful selection of toys from age group 0 to 99 years, for an annual membership fee.

Receiving the donation Toy Library President David Brailey said,” Thank you to the Pearls group for this donation, we really appreciate your

support. The Toy Library is next open on Thursday 1st October & Saturday 17th so pop into the friendly, COVID safe environment at 120 Myall Street, it’s for everyone.”

“The Pearls group has proudly donated over $23,000.00 since 2013, whilst our biggest fundraiser “Buy My Wardrobe” usually held in October, is on hold for now, we will continue to support the community whenever possible.” said Mother of Pearl (MOP) Kathy Gillespie.

$3,000 Raised For Leukaemia Foundation Port Power Youth Girl Jayda McKenny Raises $3,000 For Leukaemia Foundation

THERE wasn’t much sport on over the long weekend apart from bumper cars in Port Stephens, but one little girl from the Port Power U11’s came away with the top prize, raising $3,000 by shaving her head for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Jayda McKenny from the Port Stephens Power Youth Girls U11’s went above and

beyond for her chosen cause to simply help people doing it tougher than her.

Port Power spokesperson Josie Johnson said that the young girls of the club continue to show an amazing community spirit that’s built around supporting others.

“Jayda chose to shave her head to help people,” said Josie.

“She didn’t know anyone in particular that has

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie today said Karuah River is one of 13 areas to share in a $20 million investment in rejuvenating local fish stocks and creating spectacular tourism dive sites through the rescue of native marine ecosystems.

“The project is working in abandoned oyster lease areas and using remnant oysters to reseed the 4 hectares of new reefs,” Dr Gillespie said.

Dr Gillespie said the Commonwealth Government's $1.6 million investment will build on the NSW Government's 1-hectare reef established in May 2020 in partnership with local oyster

growers and the community.

“This initiative will sustain up to 10 jobs and see 7 local contracts issued. That is just the sort of boost the local economy needs as we rebuild post the COVID-19 pandemic.”

WORLD Pickleball Day (WPD) is coming to the Port Stephens region with the Pickleball Seniors Group at the Nelson Bay PCYC planning a dinking (that’s right, not drinking!) session to be held on Thursday 8 October between 1 and 3pm.

With WPD officially landing on Saturday 10 October, Magaret Thompson, who coordinates the Nelson Bay Pickleball Chapter, brought festivities forward to engage more of the community.
