Many have been assisted by members of the Rural Fire Service.

In Medowie there is a team of volunteers that form our last defence against bush fires.

They stand shoulder to shoulder with NSW Fire and Rescue, saving properties and lives and being there whenever we are in need.

Many members of the RFS have been entrenched in the organisation for years.

“Currently our youngest member is 18 and our oldest 83. We currently have approximately 50 members within the brigade.

Senator Hollie of Hunter visits Scottys Independent Cinema

to reach out for a slice of a $20 million dollar package to help them trade through and out of the pandemic.

Members of the industry are able to apply for one off grants of up to $85,000 in the Federal government’s bid to support the 390 independent cinemas across the country.

The grants will be administered by Screen Australia.

This includes the iconic Scottys at Raymond Terrace and the Nelson Bay Cinema.

Senator Hollie Highes told News Of The Area, “Our Independent cinemas have struggled throughout the pandemic and they are so important, particularly in regional theatres where they are a wonderful way

to ensure social gettogethers.

Our local cinemas often provide the venue and support local fundraising events.

They also provide access to a cinema experience to our community which would otherwise involve travelling for over two hours to experience a blockbuster on a big screen, something which isn’t always possible for the young and elderly.

The senator reminded people that the school holidays present a great opportunity to visit your local cinema.

“It’s one of my favourite things to do with the kids,” she said.

A visit to the local

cinema also injects funds into your local economy.

YOUNG people often don’t speak up and have a say, even when they have valid issues to discuss.

Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2021 is now open.

Young people aged 15-19 across NSW and nationwide are encouraged to have their say.

The Youth Survey is not new and is celebrating its 20th year, it is the largest online survey of its kind and provides important insights into the experiences and views of young people.

In 2021 as the impacts of COVID-19 become clearer, it is important for young people from NSW to express their aspirations, issues and concerns.

Are Your Kids Traveling Safe?

CLICK clack front n back, it’s a mantra, one that has saved many lives here in Australia.

For kids there is more to it than simply putting on the manufacturer supplied seat belt in a vehicle.

Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) and Kidsafe Australia have launched the Best Practice Guidelines for the Safe Restraint of Children Travelling in Motor Vehicles, which aims to keep children up to 16 as safe as possible when travelling in vehicles.

Despite high levels of child car restraint use in Australia (92-99%) and one of the most stringent child restraint design standards in the world, approximately 40-70 children are killed on Australian roads each year, and thousands more are injured.

Approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Guidelines are based on the best scientific evidence on how to keep children safe when travelling in motor vehicles.

NSW Minister for

Transport and Roads, the Hon Andrew Constance MP, said drivers have a duty of care to ensure children are restrained correctly in their cars.

“Please make sure your child is in the proper child restraint and it has been installed correctly, because you never know when it might save their life,” Minister Constance said.

Project leader and Senior Principal Research Scientist at NeuRA, Professor Lynne Bilston, said the revised Guidelines optimise child passenger safety by factoring in new research and transport developments.

“Our recommendations give consideration to newer restraint types, how a child fits in a particular car when

deciding if they can use an adult seatbelt, as well as newer modes of transport,” Professor Bilston said.

“For instance, now that rideshares are common, it is recommended children use their own restraint in rideshare vehicles, not just in the family’s own car,” she said.

“Unfortunately, a lot of inaccurate information gets

circulated through social media.

“The Guidelines help to dispel these myths and ensure members of the public receive accurate advice on keeping our children safe while travelling,” said Christine Erskine, Kidsafe NSW Executive Officer.

The new recommendations outlined in the Guidelines include: using child restraints or booster seats when travelling in rideshares (e.g.

Uber) and rental cars, as well as taxis; strengthened advice to use the ‘5 Step Test’ to decide when to transition from a booster seat to adult seat belt; encouraging children to sit in an upright seating posture so their restraint can work optimally; children aged 4-8 years should use an addon booster seat in preference to an integrated booster, but children 9 years and older can safely use an integrated booster seat if their car has a side curtain airbag where they are sitting; and parents of low birthweight babies should use an infant car restraint designed for low birthweight babies until they can get good

over the last 16 years we haven't really seen any improvement in the number of coastal drownings each year in Australia, despite lots of ongoing school and public education programs.

The study found that existing drowning prevention strategies are largely unevaluated.

There were 125 coastal drowning deaths in Australia last year.

All this in a week where a body was found on a Myall Coast beach.

Many studies recommended prevention measures, most frequently related to education, lifeguards and signage.

“Is that enough? Are these efforts working? How well?

We don’t have enough data to answer these questions,” Mr Koon said.

He believes it is important to continue to refine school water safety programs.

“There are probably different lessons to be learned, such as messaging at different ages, whether that’s stopping to look for rips or putting on sunscreen, avoiding alcohol or avoiding jumping off rocks and cliffs.”

“Research on danger signs on beaches has already told us that people don’t really look at signs, and if they do, are not really influenced to change decisions or behaviour,” he said.

“We’re still in the stage where most programs are driven by expert opinion without much supporting data.”

Australia continues to lead the world in drowning prevention and water safety research.

With 26 pristine beaches in Port Stephens we have our fair share of beach rescues and sadly drownings, rivers are also high risk for drownings.

“These programs give kids a core understanding of risks at the beach.

“They need to be fun and not seem like education so the kids are engaged.

No Change In Coastal Drownings

THE University of UNSW has conducted the first in-depth review specific to coastal drownings.

“We found that evaluation of coastal drowning prevention strategies is rare,” said William Koon, the lead author of the study and a PhD candidate in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences.

“This means we simply don’t have enough data showing what works and what doesn’t work.”

Mr Koon said the review’s findings are concerning as tens of thousands of Australian primary and secondary school students participate in beach or water safety programs from lifeguards and lifesavers every year.

“We need to assess if programs function as intended, and continually refine them to improve effectiveness.”

"Having your child in a safety seat protects them while in the car.

“There are countless car crashes across the state every week, and having your child restrained can make a huge difference if you're in an accident.

"Always remember that the cost and effort of purchasing, installing and putting your child into a safety seat could save their life.

"Always make sure that manufacturer's instructions are followed carefully when fitting car seats, as an improperly fitted car seat could be extremely dangerous,” he said.

“It’s different to when I grew up and there is a smarter approach through the fun engagement way of doing things.

“However no matter what; I'm a very strong advocate of education for people around the water,” he said.

The cooler months often see us bringing out old heaters and piggybacking multiple sockets in power points.

This is often true for rental properties which sometimes don’t have power outlets where they work best for everyday life.

"If you have a heater in your house, ensure that you have clearance of one metre from the heater.

“Combustible materials can easily ignite if close by.”

Children should not be allowed to get too close to heaters or fires, even ones when melting marshmallows makes it tempting to get nice and close.

DURING the Covid lockdown last year, community gatherings were banned and Tanilba's Baptist Church services went online.

This meant that parishioners could follow the services from home, and indeed, they could be viewed from anywhere on the planet.

Such was the popularity of this innovative technology that even now after the pandemic threat has passed, the online church service remains an option.

According to Rev. Anthony Gentle, services are back to normal with no face masks to interfere with singing and apart from social distancing, everything is back to the usual routine.

“We also stream our services via our facebook site,” he said.

“Those interested can Google 'Tanilba Bay Baptist Church' and follow us online,” he said.

“We have had as many as 100 'hits' on an individual service,” he added.

“We had two new local families join us on Good Friday and new members are welcome to join our congregation at any time. All details are on our facebook page,” he stated.

Easter remains the most important time of the year for many religious groups as it commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and his wresurrection.

The dates change each year to coincide with the lunar calendar.

Singing It Loud

By Marian SAMPSON COVID-19 has changed many facets of our lives including stealing the joy found by choirs in song.

The SeaSide Singers choir is still here and looking forward to re-forming again after a year of enforced isolation.

The Choir started in 2009 and it currently has around 40 singers.

The choir usually performs at concerts and events quite regularly but of course not in the past year!

The last time they gave a concert to grateful audiences was at the free Seniors Concert they present every year at the NSW Government Seniors Week in February 2020.

Diana Souter of the SeaSide Singers told News Of The Area, “In the dark days following the lockdown in 2020, 2021 was something to hold on to.

“The choir had already prepared a wonderful new program for 2021 Seniors Week when restrictions were reintroduced.

“How sad is that!

and the camaraderie of a weekly rehearsal and this lockdown situation hit them very hard,” she said.

Giacomo went on to reassure people that it is okay to not know something, saying the team at Fire and Rescue NSW are happy to take calls on fire safety, and to advise you on how to best make your home fire safe over the cooler months.

The SeaSide Singers are fortunate to be able to rehearse at the Community Centre at Salamander Way thanks to Port Stephens Council and meets on Tuesdays at 7pm.

Their motto is “Come Sing With Us”, with everyone welcome to join them in song.

Port athletes shine

IN what proved to be a very difficult year for athletics, Port Stephens Athletics Club was able to proceed with the season, signing up 136 athletes.

Three of those athletes who rose to prominence were Aileesha Oudshoorn u/12 girls, Maebel Colley u/9

girls and Kade Lawson u/10 boys.

Because of Covid-19 there were no zone championships, but just one qualifying meet for athletes to try out for the State Little Athletics Championships Aileesha, Maebe and Kade all qualified.

In extraordinary conditions of heavy rain and wind Kade competed in the 70m and was 7th in the final.

Maebel competed in 70m, 100m, 200m and long jump.

Maebel came 8th in the 70m final and 12th in long jump in her first time at the state championships.

Aileesha was scheduled to compete in the long jump on Saturday but all long jumps and triple jumps were cancelled due to the sand pits being flooded.

All athletes would need to return the following

weekend for these events.

Aileesha’s first event would be the 80m hurdles on Sunday morning with a small break in the weather Aileesha was first in her heat with a new pb of 13.63s.

In the final, Aileesha came 2nd again with another personal best of 13.23s.

Aleeisha returned the following weekend for long and triple jump.

In the long jump on Saturday, things didn go to plan and Aileesha finished in 12th place.

Triple jump was on Sunday morning and saw Aileesha refocused, the lead swapped a couple of times but on the very last jump of the competition Aileesha won with a huge jump of 10.15m a 33cm personal best!

At the club presentation night, Maebel and Kade were crowned male and female club champions for the season.

Aileesha was awarded with u/12 girls age champion and the club service award,

which is given to the athlete who makes an outstanding contribution to the club during the season.

Other notable performances at the State Championships were Mia Macdonald who became u/10g age champion and took out 4th in the 60m hurdles final.

Melody Tibbs went 5th in the u/12g high jump final and Emma Tibbs came 11th in u/10g high jump final.

Looking After Yourself During The Clean-Up

Durrheim, Public Health Physician, Hunter New England Population Health Unit, has provided some

important information about how the public can best protect themselves and keep safe during the clean-up.

“We need to be very careful with any cuts or abrasions, these need to be covered up with waterproof band-aids and it is very important to wear gloves and to wear boots.

“Also after these events we know that the weather has provided copious breeding sites for mosquitoes, and the last thing that we want is a resurgence in Ross River Fever during the clean up, so, it is very during the long days particularly around dawn and dusk, that you make sure you use an insect repellent, cover up as much of your skin as

As half of the holidays have already passed, there are still plenty of interesting, affordable ways to spend the rest of the school holidays.

MarketPlace Raymond Terrace is running its second week of free workshops, with the second week featuring painting workshops from Monday 12 April until Friday 16 April from 10AM until 2PM.

If you’re looking to get out and about, jump in the car and head to Gan Gan Lookout to see the spectacular 260 degree view of Nelson Bay and its surrounds.

Visit the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens in Heatherbrae for a great place to surround yourself with nature.

“Covering an area of more than 130 hectares, the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens are laid out in theme areas including acacias, banksias, myrtaceous, Grevilleas, ferns, bush tucker plants, succulents and palms.

“Our orchid houses are extremely popular with visitors too,” Chairman Ken Page of the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens wrote on their website.

Midcoast Council has deemed some waterways safe for recreational use while others will continue to be tested.

“Despite the extent of the flooding across the region, these results show our waterways are bouncing

back faster than we initially expected,” said Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott.

“We also urge people to use their own judgement and not swim in areas where the water appears particularly dirty,” he said.

In the event of an emergency call the State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500 for emergency assistance in a flood or storm or call ‘000’ in the event of a medical, police or fire emergency.

Families impacted by the severe weather event may be eligible for a Centrelink payment.

Harold Phipps shines for the stars

HAROLD Phipps grew up in Port Stephens and has been surrounded by theatre since he was a child.

He has recently gained a position at one of Australia’s finest Drama and Theatre Schools, NIDA, the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney.

He will be studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting).

Harold has been performing from a very young age, and has been involved in numerous shows around Newcastle.

“I did Oliver (The Musical) when I was in year three or four and that was what got me into theatre for the first time.

“And then in 2014 I was lucky

enough to be in a production at Young People’s Theatre of Macbeth.

“Working on that text and working with the director, it ignited this passion in me.

“It was then when it clicked in my head that 'this is what I want to do as a career’,” said Harold.

NIDA has provided training for some of the world’s greatest actors, with alumni including Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving and John Jarrett.

“Being accepted into NIDA is such an honour.

“To be around likeminded people that are on the same wavelength, whilst making these amazing connections and getting formally trained in an area

I love, it’s something I don’t take for granted,” Harold said.

Harold will be saying goodbye to Newcastle with one final production as director for the Young People’s Theatre season of The Addams Family Young @ Part alongside his younger sister Bridget, who will be starring as Mortica Addams.

A representative from Young People’s Theatre said, “We are incredibly proud of Harold and this achievement and are thrilled to have him involved in The Addams Family as his final local production for a while.”

We congratulate Harold on this excellent achievement and wish him the best with his studies.

The Fred Hollows 2021 Humanitarian will be chosen

by Australians via public vote from a group of eight outstanding finalists.

A judging panel led by Gabi Hollows will shortlist the finalists.

In launching the Fred Awards, Gabi Hollows said she was looking for someone who goes out of their way to care for others and create a more egalitarian world.

Tim's Triumph

TIM Hamilton was presented with his Queen's Scout Award at the Tilligerry Scout Hall on Wednesday 31 March.

He was the first scout to achieve the prestigious award in the 34 year history of the group.

Mayor Ryan Palmer and local MP Kate Washington spoke of Tim's dedication to the scouting movement and of his high standards of community service.

He was praised as a role model for the upcoming generation of scouts and young people in general.

Senior scouting representatives explained the

long and involved process of becoming a Queen's Scout which included some 300 hours of work covering 17 separate fields.

It was pointed out that it was particularly difficult to attain the standards required during the recent covid lockdown.

Some of the fields of endeavour leading to Tim's award included: Initiative; The outdoors; The Environment; First Aid; Citizenship; Unit Management; Community Service and Leadership Courses.

He also qualified as a soccer referee, reaching level four of proficiency.

“I know Fred would be proud of this too,” she said.

Legendary Australian journalist Ray Martin, a longtime friend of Fred’s and The Foundation’s first Chair, said

he was proud to join Gabi on the judging panel.

“I’ve met countless individuals in my time and Professor Fred Hollows was the consummate humanitarian.

He was one of those rare people who always thought of others much more than he thought of himself,” Ray said.

“I know that the spirit of Fred lives on right around Australia and there are people just like him getting on with it, doing great things in their communities.

“You don’t have to be a world-renowned eye surgeon restoring sight to people and leading an eye health revolution. “I look forward to reading the nominations and selecting a bunch of worthy Australians to be recognised in Fred’s honour.”

It even concludes on a satisfactory note, which is more than you can say for many shows that are suddenly killed off. TO ROOF OR NOT TO ROOF! I’ve discovered my roof is leaking.

I am placing it on the market.

What do I do?

DURING this extremely wet weather event we are currently experiencing, it has brought to light the properties where the roof needs attention.

I always advocate that when you are preparing to go to market you attend to all the little repairs and maintenance jobs that are outstanding. That way, when buyers walk through your home, they won’t be overwhelmed by things that need to be completed or repaired. Even if those items are only small insignificant jobs, they could be enough for an already nervous buyer to feel completely overwhelmed and walk out with no intention of buying. Now a new roof is a big ticket item. Like a kitchen or bathroom that needs replacing, a new roof can be a very costly affair. Sometimes though the roof doesn’t need replacing. Get a qualified tradie to inspect your roof if it is leaking. It may just be that some of the screws are loose, or that one sheet of iron needs replacing etc. Regardless, leaking roofs scare off buyers. If they still do want to purchase, after finding out that the roof leaks, then you may find that they want you to reduce the price of the property considerably.

So if you have a roof that is leaking, have it inspected, then repaired or replaced. This will ultimately lead to a much faster sale, more thank likely a higher sales price achieved and a happy buyer. I hope this helps Denise

Medowie Catholic High School - Proposed Pedestrian Underpass and Roundabout on Medowie Road DEAR News Of The Area,

THE proposal for a pedestrian underpass and a two lane roundabout at South Street to be provided on Medowie Road adjacent to the new Catholic High School was not well received by Council, or by the Catholic Schools Office (CSO). Council alleged that an underpass would flood, and that a same grade crossing with traffic lights is safer than a separate grade crossing.

Levels taken recently on site show there is a height difference of 4.3 metres from Medowie Road near South Street, to the top of the first hill to the North, a distance of about 90 metres.

Calculations to be provided by the author to Council and the CSO show that only a 3.3 metre height difference is needed to design an underpass for a flood with a recurrence interval in excess of 100 years.

Moreover, with a height difference of 4.3 metres, Medowie Road near South Street would have one metre of water over it before the proposed underpass would flood. In such a situation, the road would be closed.

A separate grade pedestrian crossing is self evidently, and virtually universally accepted, as being safer to a same grade crossing, as there is no interaction between pedestrians and motor vehicles.

Furthermore, where the topography is favourable, an underpass is usually cheaper than an overpass.

Moreover, the design detail may need to allow for lighting, road fencing and CCTV.

Mrs Tina W. Dear Tina, It is quite hard to love the humble mosquito, particularly at 2am in the morning when a lone mosquito buzzes in your ear, but you are too tired to do anything but slap your face and swear.

Apparently, they are the deadliest insect on earth, which is quite an achievement, able to wipe out their two-legged foes with everything from malaria to dengue fever as well as knock you for six with Ross River Fever. On top of that they can give your poor little pooch heart worm which is a devastating disease.

And you are right, they are currently swarming around in huge numbers and breeding up in stagnant pools of water.

I've swapped my Issey Miyake fragrance for eau de DEET lately in an effort to repel the blood-sucking blighters away.

Despite all of this, they do have some benefits -- the larvae are important in the food chain, providing meals for fish, birds and spiders. It is also only the females that feed off your blood and they do this to get the right nutrients for their babies, which is kind of sweet for Twilight fans.

So, on balance, there is an earthly purpose to mosquitoes, but that doesn't make any of us feel much better when we are covered in red, itchy welts. Keep the doors closed and stay out of the garden at dusk as they are ferocious at that time.

The installation of traffic lights is not a sign of progress, but a sign of congestion.

Between 2.30pm and 4.00pm on school days, traffic is now banked up to Richardson Road.

As Medowie grows, this congestion will only increase.

The new Catholic High School is welcomed by Medowie residents but such a development should not reduce the existing road use amenity currently enjoyed by those residents.

The provision of a pedestrian underpass and a two lane roundabout at South Street will restore and enhance this amenity, particularly so, as the current long distance 40kph speed zone can be removed.

Moreover, the cost of the forgoing proposal is most likely to be cheaper than the alleged four and a half million dollars required for the provision of traffic lights.

Whilst inconvenient, Council and the CSO should now take ‘time out’ and seriously examine different options to their proposal for traffic lights on Medowie Road.

Once traffic lights are installed, Medowie residents will be stuck with them forever.

Short term delay to the roadworks now is a better outcome than Medowie being provided with a less than optimal solution for the future.

In a democracy, people can usually get what they want, but they do need to apply some effort.

Resplendent Restoration

By Geoff WALKER THE 500 visitors who attended the 190th birthday celebrations of Historic Tanilba House were astounded by the restoration of the old convict built mansion.

Working in tandem with the heritage authorities and at great expense, Deirdre Hall and Glen Short now have the property in showcase condition and are taking bookings for weddings and corporate events.

The Covid-19 restrictions saw the numerous planned functions set aside but things are now back on track for the enterprising couple.

A great worry was that the 500mm of rain which fell before the big open day would

spoil the event.

This didn't happen and three days of sunshine saw the lawns dry out and manicured.

The position of the historic homestead on top of the hill greatly assisted in the shedding of the torrential rain.

While some visitors chose to dress up in colonial outfits to add colour to the day, none looked more resplendent than the owners who very much resembled a colonial governor and his lady.

Indeed, they stole the show.

Deirdre said that she was overwhelmed by the response.

“It was great to see the community coming together and interacting after such a long time with no social activity on the peninsular,” she said.

Addams Family Production

THE Addams Family Young @ Part is a Young People’s Theatre production with shows from 7 April until 24 April 2021.

The production features two wonderful Port Stephens’ siblings, with key roles.

Harold Phipps will be directing his final Young People’s Theatre show, as he has been accepted into NIDA in Sydney. His youngest sister, Bridget Phipps will be playing the role of Morticia Addams in the creepy cast.

“Addams Family will be our first show with a 100% capacity since COVID-19 started.

“Last year I co-directed a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, we weren’t able to have a full auditorium for that show, but we knew we still wanted to present it.

“We had worked so hard on it, and it was such a special show to everyone involved,” Harold Phipps said.

“We tried to flesh as much out in those few weeks before we went on holidays.

“The entire cast and production team are incredibly talented and I am so fortunate to be directing this as my final show,” Harold said.

Harold has been offered a place at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, and will be saying goodbye to Young People’s Theatre after many years of working with the production company and drama school.

Bridget is currently undertaking her High School Certificate, whilst graduating from the prestigious Talent Development Program, following in the steps of previous graduates including Morgan Evans, Sam Fischer and Angus and Julia Stone.

A Hospital With Heart

OUR local hospital may be small and need more staff but it has plenty of heart.

The Tomaree Community Hospital Auxiliary is a member of UHA, (United Hospital Auxiliaries of NSW Inc).

This group of volunteers work tirelessly to support our local Tomaree Hospital buying equipment, improving the facility and even giving patients nighties and PJ’s when they are in need.

Driven by an increasing growth of population and tourism the number of patients is ever increasing as are the demands on the services of the medical team at the Hospital.

Denise Sharpe, Publicity Officer for the Tomaree Community Hospital Auxiliary, told News Of The Area, “We recently assisted with the decoration of the pediatric emergency patients room.

“We raised funds and had a mural painted on the wall.”

This makes the room more inviting and less clinical for young patients assisting in reducing anxiety while undergoing treatments.

“We also hold fashion parades, stalls and raffles to raise funds,” she said.

There is also a team that engages in sewing, crocheting, knitting and collecting the donations.

Pyjamas and nighties are in need when an unplanned

stay at the hospital occurs and the Tomaree Hospital Auxillary uses donated PJ’s and Nighties to patients who find themselves hospitalised with no notice.

The volunteers wash and size the nightwear and return them to the hospital for the next person in need.

The hospital staff issue clothing to patients who arrive without their own items.

Many patients from nursing homes and visitors who attend the hospital without these essential items are very grateful for this kind and considerate service.

You can assist the auxiliary by providing donations of pyjamas and nighties or items that are suitable for raffles.

THE tennis club at Medowie is all set for a resurgence of line calls and volleys as new coaches join the team to promote the sport in the area.

The Medowie Tennis Club currently has around 30 members and hope that the new coaches coming on board will attract more seniors, parents and children to join and learn how to play the game.

There are also opportunities for residents at new housing estates in and around Medowie to join the tennis club and expand their social contact with residents from the wider area.

The members of the club are very pleased to have been able to attract the new coach Blake Dennison, who also coaches at Nelson Bay Tennis Club.

Also new on the coaching team is Saskia Maurishat.

Nicky Palmer is just one member of the Medowie Tennis Club that loves to serve up the goods.

She told News Of The Area, “For me the biggest benefits of being involved with the tennis club is the social side of it.

“Tennis is a very social sport which promotes a healthy lifestyle that is outside in the fresh air,” she said.

Oyster Washout

WITH a record 600mm (24inches) of rain falling on Tilligerry in March 2021, the harvesting of local oysters has stopped at one of the peak demand times of the year.

Two sewerage spills have seen an automatic three week suspension of the sale of oysters but unlike other growers in the fast flowing river systems, there has been little or no damage to the leases themselves.

One grower, who preferred to remain anonymous, was rather philosophical about the

current situation.

“If the sewerage spill hadn't happened, we would have been shut down for two weeks anyway due to the rain,” he said.

“It's just a shame that it came at Easter which creates high demand and good returns for us,” he added.

“I feel sorry for other growers who were less fortunate.

“The Nambucca River for example saw record flooding and some farmers lost entire leases after over 900mm (37inches) of rain.

“The leases fell victim to the fast flowing river and the debris washed down,” he said.

MORE than 175 years of salty sailing history will be rekindled on April 10-11, with SailFest Newcastle Regatta bringing together an armada of TP52s, skiffs, dinghies and catamarans – right down to tiny TrySailing trainers – on Newcastle Harbour.

The first Newcastle Regatta was held around 1845, and a carnival atmosphere prevailed as sightseers lined wharves and the port thronged with clouds of white sails.

A newspaper clipping from 1900, headlined ‘An immense attendance’, set the scene.

“An almost cloudless sky, a fresh north-easter and a comparatively clear Harbour were elements calculated to please the most enthusiastic lover of aquatics.

q The SailFest Newcastle Regatta comes to Newcastle Harbour on April 10-11.

“No other form of amusement draws such a crowd.”

That will be repeated this year as SailFest Newcastle coincides with the World Surf League, Seafood Festival and Newcastle Marathon, drawing ocean-loving spectators to the waterfront and beaches for a massive weekend of sport and lifestyle.

The harbour presents a perfect amphitheatre, with action spreading from Carrington to Honeysuckle, Stockton and out to sea.

Long gone, though, are the tallships and timber workboats of old – replaced by state-ofthe-art racing yachts, sports keelboats, Olympic-class Laser dinghies and more.
