Local Suellen Goyne of Corlette nabbed two titles for the local surfing contingent as she took out the Over-40 and Over-50 Women’s divisions.

Ethan Smith of Surfing NSW told News Of The Area, “Goyne put on a stylish display of traditional manoeuvres in her two finals to claim the two wins.

“This qualifies Suellen Goyne to participate in the Australian Titles, this

Better Health Outcomes for Our PNG Neighbours

PAPUA New Guinea are our nearest geographical neighbours, yet some of those residing in the southwestern Pacific country, experience very different living conditions to those which we enjoy.

Women can give birth on dirt floored huts in remote villages and COVID-19 is ravaging the nation.

Port Stephens residents are no strangers to these stories as local Wendy Stein (OAM) has been advocating for our community to support the struggling nation with health initiatives for many years.

Sadly, Australian workers have not yet realised the importance of having a defibrillator in the workplace with a recent survey from St John Ambulance Australia uncovered some shocking statistics, with only 8% of Australians deemed a defibrillator the most important item to have in the workplace; paper and pens climbed higher on the list.

More alarming is that one third of Australians don’t know what a Sudden Cardiac Arrest is and 78% of Australians don’t think people under 45 years old can experience a Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

61% of Australians claim their office either doesn’t have a defibrillator or they don’t know where it’s kept, and a further 58% of Australians say they wouldn’t feel confident using a defibrillator, with reasons being that they haven’t had training in first aid (54%), they find it too complicated

to use (24%) and they worry they might hurt the person (22%).

Sarah Lance, CEO of St John Ambulance NSW said, “We know that quick bystander intervention can improve cardiac arrest survival rates.

“Defibrillators should be considered a necessity in any workplace so that in the event of an emergency staff can act quickly and with confidence.

“Defibrillators are simple and designed so that anyone can use them – even if you never have before.

“The key is for them to be accessible, checked regularly, and used when needed,” she said.

First Aid training is easily accessible and is mandatory for some professions.

“These vehicles are dedicated off-road 4WD response vehicles.

“They will be used in remote areas, with rough terrain, for specialised medical emergency retrievals.”

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in Australia.

Every year, around 25,000 people experience a Sudden Cardiac Arrest out of hospital, with a current survival rate of 5%.

St John Ambulance NSW is promoting the importance of defibrillators in the hope that one day, every workplace in Australia will be equipped with the life-saving device.

This week there is an awareness campaign promoting safety in the workplace.

If a defibrillator is used within the first 2-3 minutes of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, the chance of survival increases to 70%.

said Defence has delivered three ambulances in total to PNG in the past month, along with other critical supplies and equipment to assist in the country’s response to the COVID-19 crisis.

“Defence is currently providing targeted assistance including technical and logistics support as part of the whole-of-Australian Government support to PNG,” he said.

“This has included transporting Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) personnel, medical equipment, vaccines and other humanitarian supplies to Port Moresby.

Australia and PNG share a strong relationship and this support is a natural extension of Defences longstanding partnership with the PNG Defence Force through the Defence Cooperation Program.

Port Stephens local Wendy Stein (OAM) has been advocating for better health outcomes in PNG for many years through the charity Save The Kula Babies.

Wendy Stein (OAM) told News Of The Area, “Australia has obligations to PNG from the past.

“We must continue to assist our nearest neighbour or the fragile health system will fail, which will be a humanitarian disaster which also threatens our security.

“There is the potential for many diseases to migrate to Australia from PNG such as tuberculosis and COVID-19.

“Rotary has been assisting mothers and babies.

“Shamefully, the mortality rate for women in childbirth in PNG is the highest in the Asia Pacific.

“We must do more,” she said.

"We encourage members of the community to get out there and undertake first aid training.

“It will definitely help emergency services when they arrive to help somebody, and it could save somebody's life,” he said.

“It means people in cardiac arrest are getting life saving shocks quicker than ever before.

“I encourage people to know where the closest one is at all times if possible,” said Arnott.

“It always helps them when they arrive, if someone has been able to take initial steps to treat someone's injuries.

Police appealing for assistance to locate man last seen in Tea Gardens POLICE are appealing for assistance to locate Allan Bentley, aged 63, who was last seen about 12pm on Monday 26 April 2021 in the Tea Gardens area.

He was reported missing to officers from Port Stephens Hunter Police District, who

commenced an investigation into his whereabouts.

Police are concerned for his welfare after he failed to attend pre-arranged appointments and his regular game of lawn bowls on Saturday 1 May 2021, at a bowling club on Old Maitland Road at

Hexham, which is out of character.

Allan is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 179cm tall, of medium build with short brown and grey hair and a beard.

Lifeline, supported by the Hunter New England Primary Health

Network, is launching a new service, called AfterCare.

Co-designed with local communities, AfterCare has been developed to provide quality, professional support to individuals post-suicide attempt.

AfterCare offers individuals one-on-one support to increase access and engagement with care, help manage suicidal thoughts, and prevent repetition of suicidal behaviour or self-harm.

Lifeline Direct’s Regional General Manager, Julie Wicks, said, “The AfterCare service model is about offering people postsuicide attempt the opportunity to explore optional pathways through connection with an AfterCare Coordinator and group support.

“Participants also receive counselling sessions and access to a dedicated after-hours phone crisis service.”

The AfterCare service is currently being rolled out to support the Hunter, New England

van, with NSW registration UQG146, which has ‘catering’ written on the side.

Blowing up the School

“NOTHING!” is the standard answer to enquiring parents when they ask their kids what they did at school each day.

There was however a very different answer to the same question in the early 1980s from kids coming home from the old Lemon Tree Passage school. q

“We blew it up!” was the response from pupils one on particular day, and in part they were right.

But, dear reader we are getting ahead of ourselves, so it may be wise to set the scenes which led up to this exciting event which people still talk about today.

RAAF Williamtown was blacked out and the fighters swooped down out of the night sky to 'attack' the artificial runway.

The RAAF won the war game.

He did the same with a rotted out channel marker in the bay.

The school principal was worried about the huge gum trees overhanging the lower playground and their threat to the pupils.

A phone call to the base had the demolition guy out with a bus full of work experience kids and explosives.

One by one the towering gums crashed to the ground with the schoolchildren watching on from a safe distance.

A senior pupil was even allowed to press the plunger for the last tree.

Hunter left out of regional and rural health inquiry

HUNTER based health lawyer and Australian Lawyers’ Alliance (ALA) NSW spokesperson on health, Catherine Henry, is disappointed that the parliamentary inquiry brought on by the crisis in regional and rural health will not hold a hearing in the Hunter.

The first of 12 community hearings for the Upper House inquiry into “Health outcomes and access to health and hospital services in rural, regional and remote NSW” started on April 29 in

Deniliquin.

Ms Henry said it is important for the inquiry to visit other communities, but the Hunter should also be on the list.

She said the Hunter New England Local Health District is the state’s largest. John Hunter Hospital is one of the most sued in the state, followed closely by Maitland Hospital. The Hunter has high rates of complaints to the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission.

“My firm handles many medical negligence cases for

local people,” Ms Henry said.

“Many local people suffer avoidable death and injury because of preventable negligence, caused by underresourcing, lack of staff and systemic failures,” she said.

“Our region has a large population but still does not have the proportionate resources that Sydney health services receive.

“Patients experience delays to treatment, and many are being transferred to Sydney – which is not good enough.”

Another exciting day was when a ''Mirage' fighter crashed into the foreshore of Tanilba almost demolishing a row of houses after the pilot had ejected.

You see, strict protocol and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues have put an end to it....and stopped people having fun as well. department is among the busiest in NSW and the only major trauma centre outside of Sydney.

It also has the only children’s hospital and child and adolescent mental health unit outside of Sydney.

“There are continued media reports about staff saying Hunter hospitals are at breaking point due to the demands on them.”

Ms Henry helped draft the ALA’s submission to the inquiry - one of 700 the inquiry has received.

“Lawyers, journalists and health staff play a vital role in exposing systemic problems in health care but it is up to governments to act to prevent unnecessary deaths.

“It is one thing to have an inquiry but we need action afterwards – not another report that gathers dust.

“We need a properly funded, data based, strategy to improve rural and regional healthcare – and the Hunter is a vital part of that strategy.”

I make a point to never come between partners!!! The shares v property debate is decades old and is one without a definitive answer. Both have pros and cons, with many variables to consider. Property is a tangible asset.

While ‘flippers’ abound, property tends to be viewed as a long-term investment.

Even though the market may ebb and flow, property generally tends to rise in value and if we’re talking about residential property here, everyone needs a home, so the demand is consistent. Consequently, it represents far less risk.

We’ve seen how the market has thrived over the past year and it shows no sign of stalling.

Shares are generally viewed through the short to medium-term lens, where ‘timing the market’ is essential. Of course there are significant gains to be made, but the stockmarket is far more volatile and when there’s a plunge, the speed and depth can be alarming – and costly. I’m not here to provide you with direction, merely add to your conversation.

Perhaps you are in a position to invest in both. If not, then informed discussion with your financial advisor should give you clear direction.

In defence of beach hauling

DEAR News Of The Area,

GEOFF Delaney (Port Stephens News Of The Area, Fish Killing Frenzy on Fingal Bay, p6, April 22 Edition) please don’t feel like that about the mullet catch.

Beach hauling is legal.

The fishermen are licensed professionals.

It is their job and they are policed by DPI Fisheries.

Every year around this time massive schools of mullet exit rivers along the East coast on an annual run and the beach haulers are active for a while.

Club Lemon Tree to do battle in 2021 Perfect Plate Awards

FOURTEEN clubs from across Newcastle and the Hunter will do battle for local bragging rights in the 2021 Your Local Club Perfect Plate Awards.

The new club culinary competition, which launched on Thursday, 29 April, will see clubs from across the state putting forward their best dish, with club patrons deciding the winners.

Eats@Club Lemon Tree will put forward their Chicken Roulade.

While there will be three state-wide winners in the small, medium and large club categories, there will also be 13 regional winners, including one in the Newcastle and Hunter region.

ClubsNSW CEO Josh Landis said the competition will be fierce.

“Clubs from the Newcastle and Hunter region have always performed strongly in our dining competitions.

“In fact, the Vincent Street Kitchen and Bar was the winner of our old Chef’s Table competition when it last ran in 2019 — and plenty of other local clubs have recorded podium finishes in the past.

“It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if a Hunter-based club took out the state-wide award.

“Judging by the quality and variety of the competition dishes, local diners will be spoiled for choice in this year’s Perfect Plate Awards,” Mr Landis said.

With voting now open until Monday, 21 June 2021, it’s up to the public to pick a winner.

Diners are encouraged to visit participating clubs, taste the Perfect Plate dish on offer and score it out of five by scanning the eatery’s unique QR code or filling out a simple paper voting form.

The 13 regional winners and three statewide winners will be announced at a special gala dinner on 7 July at Doltone House, Darling Harbour.

While diners can only vote for each Perfect Plate dish once, they are encouraged to taste as many competition dishes at as many NSW clubs as possible.

The most prolific club eaters will be in the running to win dining vouchers worth up to $2,500.

As the culinary battle heats up, celebrity chefs and Perfect Plate ambassadors Manu Feildel and Colin Fassnidge are stoking the competitive flames and encouraging the public to head to their local club and vote.

“After the year we’ve had, it’s great just to be able to get back into a club and celebrate great food in a local community,” said Colin.

I RECKON there are two distinct types of parenting with the exception of some parents who are floaters and some who have not yet worked out what their parenting style is. Did you ever watch that episode of The Brady Bunch when Alice's Special Operations Commander sister came to stay and treated the kids as though they were Navy Seals instead of delicate blended-family siblings?

Well, some parents are like that. Everything is efficient and organised. The children make their bed so neatly you can bounce a coin on it, and they have little checklists on the fridge and maybe some good behaviour stickers because who doesn't get gratification from a coloured piece of paper in the shape of an apple after spending two hours cleaning the windows?

The other side of the coin is the laissezfaire style of parenting where everyone has a choice. These parents let their kids resolve their own issues, rarely stepping in, but unfortunately creating narcissists verging on psychopaths who end up as self-described entrepreneurs flogging multi-levelmarketing products when they're not too busy having epiphanies or activating others so they can relinquish their hard-earned cash on ice baths and/or chakra cleansing.

Now, I feel you are definitely in the Alice's Twin Sister category, and who could blame you? If you have baked the cake, why would you let your sweet and sticky minions take to it with colour-clashing smarties, marbled icing and plastic unicorn candles? I bet you had a vision, Georgina, that possibly included some handcrafted Blue Mockingbird Eggs, baby blue ganache, and a nest made of spun toffee, all of it balanced on the choc-dipped perfection of a montane forest tree branch that you had flown in from Mexico.

Next time make the cake and decorate it in sweet isolation, away from prying eyes and pesky fingers.

The oft-muttered statement, “Not in front of the kids,” takes on a twisted new meaning in tonight’s season two finale of this enjoyable Welsh thriller. This time, it’s not in reference to eating that block of chocolate away from prying eyes; though, in truth, you may need a sugar hit after sitting through the episode’s intense circumstances. Breeze (Rhashan Stone) gives Evan (Bradley Freegard) an ultimatum. As the clock ticks on the Corran Energy deal, Faith (Eve Myles, above) rushes to find the woman who could overturn Madlen’s (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) conviction. The truth comes out – and so will season three – in due time.

The Brits are old pros when it comes to concocting playful panel shows, but Taskmaster takes the cake for utter frivolity and pointlessness; and that’s what makes it a must-watch 60 minutes. Presenters Greg Davies (pictured) and Alex Horne come up with inane, laugh-out-loud, often disgusting and extremely creative challenges for the five comedians game enough to jump aboard the series for a wacky and unpredictable adventure. Tonight, in “Lotta Soup”, Jessica Knappett’s cheerful attitude is rigorously tested by a former traffic warden. Rhod Gilbert endangers Alex’s life again, and Phil Wang has a great time with some squeezable mayonnaise.

The undertone of this Aussie comedy, starring Lisa McCune, who has made a name for herself on stage as well on screen, and stand-up comedian Peter Helliar, is delightful. Created by Helliar, the comedy traverses the relationship of couple Greg (Helliar, above) and Em (McCune) with lighthearted warmth and wit. Returning with season three, it’s easy to see why the show wins families’ hearts and funny bones.

Tonight, Em pitches a new book idea to boss Audrey (Judith Lucy), but is lured into a meeting with cricketer Adam Gilchrist instead.

Meanwhile, Greg is determined to outdo the President of the Parents and Friends committee.

Commenting On Council’s Draft Operational Plan

A SCANT few days to review what seems like 1000’s of pages, that’s what the community has been asked to comment on for what could be considered the ‘bible” for Port Stephens Council in coming months.

Council has just put their Draft Operational Plan on Exhibition for public comment.

The plan is designed to establish priorities and details a host of proposed plans for the future including the remediation work after the storm of March 2021.

Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council resolved to place the draft Integrated Planning and Reporting documents (which include the Delivery Program 2018 to 2022 including our Operational Plan 2021 2022) on public exhibition at the

meeting on 13 April 2021.

“These are the key strategic documents that guide our Council’s work plans for the coming year.

“They take the Community Strategic Plan’s 10-year vision and translate it into actions for us to deliver in the shortterm.

“We develop these plans at a point in time but we’ll continue to remain agile and review our plans as the situation with COVID-19 changes.

“With the local government elections being deferred by a year until September 2021, we’ve

extended our Delivery Program to include our 2021 to 2022 program of works.

The new rock revetment wall will help stabilise the area, which is currently experiencing coastal erosion and provide a safer connection between the boat ramp, car park and the marina.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the works are essential to protect and

conserve our coastline.

“We must stabilise this area to ensure the safety of our community which is paramount to Port Stephens Council.

“The works will also ensure we protect our unique landscape and significant Aboriginal Place to conserve its cultural significance.

“The upgrades will also

improve accessibility for the local community and visitors to the area around the headland,” he said.

The project has been funded by both Port Stephens Council and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund.

Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, “Council’s draft operational plans are a great way to understand how the Council is going and what its plans are going forward.

“Every year we have locals who go through these plans in depth and provide feedback to Council.

“This is extremely valuable, because everything Council does should be scrutinised by the public.

“I encourage you to go and have a look and provide feedback directly to Council.

“The Councillors need to know where we can do better and what direction you think we should be going,” said Councillor Arnott.

By Marian SAMPSON KING Street Heritage Festival is coming to Raymond Terrace for its fourth year on 15 May. It’s a festival that celebrates the history of the region which is peppered by red coats, muscats, mop caps and long dresses.

Event organiser Adam Nicholas told News Of The Area, “Visitors can expect to see the William IV paddle steamer which was built in Raymond Terrace in 1988.”

Magpies too strong for Roos THE Karuah Roos took on the Raymond Terrace Magpies at Lakeside Sporting Complex on Saturday, in an entertaining game full of passion, hard hits and great runs by both teams.

It was hot on and off the field, and the Magpies scored first to take a 4/0 lead, before

Jack Bills crossed the line for the Roos to equal the score at 4 all.

Terrace then scored two more tries to take the score to 14/4.

Jack Bills then crossed the line again for his second try and Sam Croese converted to take the score to 14/10

The Magpies scored another converted try before half time to extend their lead to 20/10.

The second half saw the Magpies convert two more tries to take the score to 32/10.

By Marian SAMPSON TWO of Port Stephens’ key community support groups have joined forces for the benefit of the Tilligerry Peninsula community, opening ‘Tilli Place’ at Tanilba Bay, in an effort to expand access to much-needed youth mental health and frontline services.

Port Stephens’ only free youth mental health counselling service, jupiter, and the Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre are behind the joint venture, operating since last month, which will see both community groups offering vital local services. jupiter, an initiative of Caring for Our Port Stephens’ Youth (COPSY), provides free individualised counselling to young people across the Tomaree – and now, Tilligerry peninsulas.

Tilli Place Provides Essential Services On Peninsula

Apart from country town hospitality, wine galore, scrumptious food, honey, cheeses and the Mudgee farmers market, there were special events in the form of the car show, the air show and hundreds of footy fans for

the Sea Eagles/Titans clash at Mudgee Stadium.

Mayoral Column AS the smart parking rollout continues across Nelson Bay, we’ve listened to your feedback and are making some changes.

You’ve told us that the current smart parking hours from 7am to 7pm are too long, so we’re proposing to change the hours at the Local Traffic Committee this May to be from 8:30am to 5:30pm every day.

Local businesses and workers have told us they value the dedicated long stay parking and the data confirms this, with car parks reaching 80 to 90% capacity by 9am each day.

Thanks to this data collected from smart parking sensors, we will expand the business parking area to include the Donald Street East carpark to create more spaces for workers in Nelson Bay. This is just one of the smart aspects of smart parking — being able to use data to make informed decisions to improve parking in our town.

You’ve also told us about the positive changes including improved traffic flow in and around the town centre since converting Yacaaba and Stockton Streets into one-way streets and improved pedestrian safety.

We’re getting ready to switch on a number of digital smart parking signs in the town centre from May. These will provide live information on parking space availability — saving time and making it easier to find a park.

The smaller signs will be run by solar power, just like the meters.

Thanks for your patience as we refine the smart parking system, build infrastructure to support these changes and reinvest back into the Nelson Bay town centre.

Stockton Cricketer claims NSW Country Player of the Year

By Tara CAMPBELL NICK Foster, member of the Stockton & Northern Districts Cricket Club has been awarded with the prestigious Josh Hazlewood Medal as the 2020-21 NSW Country Cricket Player of the Year.

A spokesperson of the Stockton & Northern Districts Cricket Club said, “Nick has been a long standing Newcastle and NSW Country Representative as well as

the long standing captain of Stockton & Northern Districts Cricket Club.

“This award really does cap off a fine individual season for Foster where he led Stockton & Northern Districts to the Club Championship, he once again captained Newcastle to the NSW Country Title and also Captained NSW Country for the second consecutive year.

“Nick is not only a fine ambassador for the Stockton & Northern Districts Club on a regional and state level but he is also heavily involved

with coaching and youth development in the Port Stephens area meaning young people in the area really do have great opportunities to learn from one of NSW elite cricketers.

“As a club we are very proud of Nick's achievements and we also consider ourselves very fortunate to have Nick as our Club Captain and part our coaching team.”

In late February, Foster captained Newcastle to the Men’s Country

Championships title, defeating Riverina by 67 runs in the Final.

Cricket NSW described Nick as, “The personification of what it means to be a Country cricketer through his passion and dedication for the sport in the regions.”

Foster joins former Stockton player James Hogg on the honour roll, along with many other Newcastle cricketers including Jason Sangha, Simon Moore, Rhys Soper, Anthony Stuart and Mark Curry.

Nelson Bay Croquet Club enjoy success at Forster

FORSTER Croquet Club organised their club's annual Autumn Carnival from 26 to 29 April 2021.

The carnival comprises both singles and doubles Golf Croquet handicap play.

48 players from around the State entered the carnival.

Cheryl Lloyd and Sandy Tawa from Nelson Bay travelled to Forster for the carnival and both were seeded in Block B for both

singles and doubles.

In the doubles, Cheryl was partnered by Ros Johnstone of Sutherland and they were unbeaten to win the Block B Doubles.

In the singles, Sandy won 8 of 11 games to finish runner-up to Bruce Glasgow of Toronto who won 9 games.

WHAT does a National Motocross champion do after breaking many bones and being left in an induced coma at the tender young age of 20?

For Tanilba's Luke George, it was the beginning of a business career which has gone from strength to strength.

He retired from competitive racing and decided to capitalise on his legendary status.

This saw him set up a 'boot camp' for aspiring dirt bike riders at the family's rural property near the Oyster Cove turnoff at Tanilba Bay.

The underlying sandy base proved ideal for his training circuit.

The 'boot camp' was just that.

It was full-on during the school holidays with the young, live-in hopefuls up at the crack of dawn, eating healthy food and tidying their beds.

It was then off to the Tilligerry Aquatic Centre for some basic fitness training before being put through their paces on the circuit.

But there's more!

MidCoast Council will be carrying out a range of herbicide spraying activities in various waterways, open drains, and retention ponds; on roadsides and reserves; and on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries and Council building surrounds within the entire MidCoast Local Government area during the months May, June and July 2021.

These activities will be targeting general vegetation, grasses, reeds, bindii, broadleaf, annual, perennial and environmental weeds and each program is subject to weather conditions. Only qualified operators will be undertaking works.

On the roadsides and reserves, subject to availability and need, registered herbicides Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360, Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate), and/or Metsun 600, Lynx WG, Kenmet, Kenzon and/or Grazon extra will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable.

In various waterways and retention ponds Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360 and/or Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate) will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable and as a precaution residents are advised to refrain from using, drinking or swimming in the water for two weeks following treatments.

Registered herbicides, chemicals Spearhead, Kamba M and Broadside will be used as per label directions on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries, reserves and Council building surrounds.

Scheduled areas will be assessed individually and treated as required. Individual areas will be sign-posted at the times of treatment in commonly accessed areas. A list of areas to be treated is available by calling MidCoast Council on 7955 7777.

By Marian SAMPSON SAIL Port Stephens celebrated a triumphant return to Port Stephens.

With much of the world in shutdown the event took on a very international stage with

drone footage of the races, Port Stephens and the outer islands showing the natural beauty of the region to viewers across the globe.

Mark Rothfield told News Of The Area, “The event was picked up by Big US and

European Sailing websites.”

Local sailors showed well in the event too, with Port Stephens Yacht Club members and regular weekend and Wednesday afternoon racers taking out first and second in the Performance Cruising

category.

“Una Vita and She’s The One came first and second with local knowledge – both of those boats performed consistently.

“Performance cruising has all sorts of boats in it.”

This year Sail Port Stephens enjoyed great offshore conditions that featured big starts with tricky conditions at the breakwall.

With the 108 strong fleet taking off and running under spin through Shoal Bay and

through the heads.

“The Junior Series was held at the Sailing Centre and featured the current Olympic competition boats which are handled boats.

“This was the first major regatta after COVID it had the rest of the world looking at Port Stephens in amazement and a touch of envy, especially as we were able to socialise.

“Windsurfers joined the event with 25 wind surfers participating including doing a marathon around the port and we expect bigger numbers of windsurfers next year,” he said.

Ichi Ban owner Matt Allen was delighted to be back at a regatta where he has enjoyed considerable success, taking home the prestigious NSW title for IRC Division 1 along with ORC honours.

“It was another good day’s racing out there, and everything worked out well. It was a good test of boat speed and tactics,” he said.
