Recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals inflation rose 2.1 per cent in the March quarter, up 5.1 per cent over the past year.

As the ABS states, these are the largest quarterly and annual rises since the introduction of the goods and services tax (GST).

“This neglect was shown by the brutal decision of both major parties to leave JobSeeker at $46 a day, which holds recipients well beneath the poverty line and exposed to rising cost of living pressures.

“Expecting people to survive on $46 a day is cruel.

“It demonstrates a lack of understanding, or care, for people doing it tough and the growing challenge of making ends meet as prices for basic goods surge.

“Whichever party wins government next month will be forced to urgently address this issue unless they want to preside over a ballooning poverty crisis,” Ms Victory said.

Ms Victory said caution from both parties about increasing the national debt was understandable, which is why the St Vincent de Paul Society commissioned modelling to demonstrate budget-neutral options available to fund changes that would release Australians from poverty en masse.

“Our research shows Australia can easily fund a significant boost to JobSeeker, alongside an increase in Commonwealth Rent Assistance, by making simple and affordable changes to our tax and welfare system.

“The only problem is we lack political leaders with the courage to countenance such a plan,” Ms Victory said.

“Our modelling shows you could release over a million Australians from poverty through minor changes to capital gains tax and superannuation tax that would only marginally affect the very highest incomeearners.

“Australia contains both incredible wealth and heartbreaking poverty.

“Our incapacity to fix one with the other is a failure of politics, not a budgetary restraint,” Ms Victory said.

“Workers deserve a decent pay rise, and we certainly reject calls from employers to freeze the minimum wage,” she said.

Angela has a background in health and law, as a registered nurse and a barrister defending human, environmental and animal rights.

For the past ten years, Angela has worked for

an independent school, supporting it in all aspects of school safety and child protection and is trained as a child protection investigator.

Angela believes that one of her strengths is risk analysis.

United Australia Party to contest Paterson seat

THE United Australia Party, led by Clive Palmer, has endorsed Jason Olbourne as their candidate for Paterson.

Mr Olbourne holds a degree in Political Science and hosts a program on alternative internet radio station Today’s News Talk and a video show called ‘World Series News’.

Mr Olbourne is also the creator of A Million Mums for Informed Consent, which describes itself as “an organization aimed at educating and empowering parents about vaccine safety”.

“I am running for my children; for all our children,” he told News Of The Area.

“After two years of uncertainty and COVID carnage, we have more questions than answers, not limited to $1 trillion in government debt, rising inflation, supply shortages and geo-political uncertainty.

“We need a broad big picture approach to look ahead and around corners in order to plan for what is ahead,” he said.

Man charged following Salt Ash crash

A MAN has been charged following a two-vehicle crash near Salt Ash in April.

At approximately 3.25pm on Tuesday 5 April 2022, emergency services were called to Nelson Bay Road near

Marsh Road, following reports a Subaru sedan and a Honda SUV had collided head-on.

The passenger in the SUV, an 80-year-old woman, was trapped for a short time before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital suffering critical leg injuries and five others, including

the 78-year-old driver of the SUV and the 32-year-old driver of the sedan were all treated at the John Hunter Hospital for minor injuries.

All three passengers from the passengers in the sedan, including two children aged two and five and a 31-year-old were uninjured.

On arrival, SES stabilised the vehicles and used hydraulic rescue tools including, cutters, spreaders and combi tool to perform a side removal on one of the vehicles.

Officers from Port Ste-

phens-Hunter Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following investigations, the 78-year-old man attended Newcastle Police Station where he was arrested on Thursday 28 April 2022.

The man was charged

with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct, negligent driving, and not keeping left of dividing line.

He was granted conditional bail to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 23 May 2022.

After recording details, Skipper Brian with crew Jeff and Brad headed out to the grounded vessel.

The vessel was on the sand bar and was not able to be towed off and PS30 headed back to her berth

with the two people on board and until 4:30pm at high tide to head back onto the water Once on scene crew Jeff and Brad, with quick line work, soon had the vessel under tow.

Inshore Prawn trawlers NSW DPI Fisheries Officers from the Hunter District Office recently assisted NSW Water Police Marine Area Command in a joint agency operation boarding inshore prawn trawlers in Stockton Bight just north of Newcastle.

Officers from Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) also took part in the investigation.

A number of prawn trawlers were boarded from two Water Police tactical response vessels.

All trawler operators were found to be complying with NSW Fisheries regulations, however NSW DPO reminds locals to report illegal activity on the Fisherwatch phone line on 1800 043 536.

Emergency Services Update

International Firefighters Day THIS week Medowie Rural Fire Brigade held an International Firefighters/St Florian’s day service.

Members from Williamtown/Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade and Fire and Rescue Stockton attended the service to recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters across the world make to ensure communities and our environment are as safe as possible.

It’s also a day in which current and past firefighters are thanked for their contributions.

At noon local time on the first Sunday in May each year, fire brigades sound their sirens for thirty seconds followed by a minute’s silence, in memory of and respect for all firefighters who have been lost in the line of duty or have passed

on.

“We pride ourselves in the service that we are able to provide to the community but know that we wouldn't be able to provide that service without the help of firefighters from brigades everywhere and we thank them for serving with us,” a representative from Medowie Rural Fire Brigade said.

School Bus Safety NSW Police are reminding residents to take extra care around buses as children make their way to and from school.

Under advice from NSW Road Safety, they remind everyone to slow down around buses, whether the lights are flashing or not as there can be children around.

Anzac Day Long Weekend Over the ANZAC Day long weekend there were a number of alcohol-related incidents in the Port Stephens Hunter Police District.

- Security at a licensed premises ejected two heavily intoxicated people from the location.

The people assaulted security, and, when police officers attended, they assaulted police.

Both have been charged.

- Five people assaulted three victims after all eight persons were ejected from a licensed premises.

The offenders allegedly hid in bushes outside and set upon the victims as they were exiting.

Inquiries are continuing.

Dolly the Horse On the morning of ANZAC Day, Raymond Terrace SES and Port Stephens Hunter Police were called to a 22-year-old Clydesdale, Dolly, who found herself caught in an open drain in her paddock at Raymond Terrace.

Dolly was well and truly stuck, with her right hind leg firmly entangled in vegetation on the bottom.

She patiently persisted with SES personnel poking and prodding her, putting slings around her, and desperately trying to free her from her predicament, obviously knowing that her human friends were trying to help her.

Helipad Refused

IN what is being heralded a win for the community, a proposed helipad at Anna Bay has been refused by Port Stephens Council.

It was community member Max Stoker who originally raised widespread awareness of the proposal, and the baton was taken up by many who held concerns over the development.

The Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association congratulated the community for seeing the development stopped, and are hailing the result as a win for people power.

The development application was refused by Council on multiple grounds, including that the proposed development is inconsistent with the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 and

Port Stephens Local Environmental Plan 2013.

Council also deemed the development would be likely to detract from the rural character of the locality and

impact the surrounding land uses negatively.

Cabbage Tree Road upgrade Works underway for multimillion-dollar upgrade to Cabbage Tree Road

By Tara CAMPBELL RESIDENTS in Williamtown will soon be enjoying smoother and safer journeys along Cabbage Tree Road with a multimillion dollar safety upgrade about to get underway.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Barnaby Joyce, said the Australian and NSW governments are jointly funding this $4 million upgrade through the Road Safety Program to provide a stronger, longer lasting and safer road.

“Cabbage Tree Road is an important link to the Newcastle Airport and RAAF Base at Williamtown, which is used by about 8,862 vehicles each day including 1,772 heavy vehicles,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“Improving safety along

this 2.6-kilometre section between Nelson Bay Road and Barrie Close is important for locals, business and tourists as there have been eleven crashes between 2013 and 2018.”

Mr Joyce said the project will also help to support local jobs, employing approximately 40 jobs and five contractors for a period of eight weeks.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said Transport for NSW has worked with Port Stephens Council to carry out the work.

The work includes widening the road over the full 2.6 kilometres to provide 3.5 metre travel lanes and 1.5 metre sealed shoulders.

“As well as widening and resurfacing the road, crews will be installing a wider painted centreline to improve safety and reduce the likeli-

hood of head-on crashes.

“Work will also be carried out to install new safety barriers and improve drainage, reducing the risks of water over the road,” Mr Farraway said.

Works commenced on 27 April and will be carried out from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and Saturdays, with an approximate completion of eight weeks, weather permitting.

A detour will be in place for westbound motorists from 6am to 6pm weekdays and Saturdays.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead as the detour is expected to add up to eighteen kilometres to journeys, which is about fifteen minutes travel time.

Access will be maintained for residents, local businesses, school buses and emergency services.

No closure of Morna Point Road Council unanimously decides against the closure of Morna Point Road

By Tara CAMPBELL PORT Stephens Council has made the decision to not close part of Morna Point Road in Anna Bay. In an alternate motion raised by Mayor Ryan Palmer, it was concluded that the unformed and ‘surplus to operational need’ land on Morna Point Road in Anna Bay would not be closed by the Council at this point in time.

“As we discussed in the property advisory panel and through the feedback we’ve received from the community, the closure is something that we don’t

need to proceed with at this stage.

“The right thing to do at this stage is to leave it as an unformed road and move on from this one,” Mayor Palmer said.

The subject road has an area of 814m2 and is zoned R2 Low Density Residential.

It is situated amongst residential properties and adjoins the ocean on its southern border with the adjoining oceanfront land a rocky escarpment.

Councillor Jason Wells also spoke to the motion, discussing the concern from community members.

and judging by my inbox and the many social media posts from concerned community members, I think this is a really good decision.

“I think it also highlights how passionate our community is about the land that they use to access the waterfront and or even the visual amenity that is supplied by these sorts of blocks,” Cr Wells said.

Cr Wells also stated that this decision is evidence of the effective engagement the Council has undertaken with the community, ensuring the best outcome for everyone.

Medowie Township Does ANZAC Day Proud

By Marian SAMPSON THE new War Memorial at Medowie was the site of moving ANZAC Day commemorations on April 25.

Port Stephens Councillor and veteran Chris Doohan told News Of The Area, “It was a fantastic turn out for Medowie’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

“Hundreds of people donned their medals, or those of their ancestors, to march down Ferodale Road to the beat of the drum band from Irrawang High - from current serving members and many veterans, to Air Force Cadets, Guides, Scouts and school kids.

“The road was lined with many people clapping as

the parade marched by and listening to the shattering voice of parade commander Paul Bartlett call the orders of the march.”

Over 2,000 people attended the service at the new memorial at Medowie Social, where the shrine was blessed by Father Chris Yates.

“The RAAF Cadets manned the Catafalque party as the service began, emceed by Medowie RSL sub-Branch President Ian Harding.

“Speeches of ‘Thanks and Appreciation’ (were given) by me and a tribute to the ‘Animals of War’ (was provided) by Steve Withey,” Mr Doohan said.

Emotions ran high for some as the bagpipes were played as the sun rose by local veteran Jarad Ashpole.

“Many wreaths were laid and tears shed in a beautiful touch to the

service.

“I had the honour of reciting the ‘Ode of Remembrance’, (which was) followed by a perfect rendition of The Last Post by bugler Katie Hamshaw.

“The silence of one minute was wonderfully respected by all, then the voices of thousands sang our national anthem.

“It was truly inspiring.

“Medowie ought to be damn proud of this ANZAC Day. “It will live long in the minds of many,” Mr Doohan said.

For the fallen and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice serving our country there can be comfort and honour found in local communities standing tall and sharing in the spirit of the ANZACs.

By Marian SAMPSON A SUSTAINABLE future with reduced landfill is coming one step closer for the Port Stephens community, with the establishment of a funded maggot farm in Raymond Terrace.

An additional 33,000 tonnes of food waste will be diverted from landfill each year, reducing landfill emissions by almost 50,000 tonnes of CO-2 equivalent, thanks to the latest round of NSW Government funding for organics processing infrastructure.

NSW Environment Minister James Griffin said a new, commercial scale maggot

farm in Raymond Terrace that turns food waste into animal feed will receive part of the $2.3 million funding.

“Maggot-farming is one of many emerging technologies that can help us better manage our food waste, instead of sending it to landfill,” Mr Griffin said.

“This project will use black soldier fly larvae to process organic waste at the Suez Resource Recovery Park in the lower Hunter.

“This, along with additional mobile facilities, will process about 9,000 tonnes of food waste annually.”

phens (CAPS) welcomed the introduction of commercial scale composting of organic waste, for livestock production and as a soil enhancer.

CAPS President Alisha Onslow said, "Reducing organic waste into landfill helps reduce methane production, a significant contributor to greenhouse gases and climate change.

"To have a major project using innovative technology here in Raymond Terrace is particularly pleasing.

“I hope that Port Stephens Council will implement systems so our residential and commercial

propriately redirected away from landfill.”

Alisha said the local processing of organic waste using black soldier fly larvae for animal feed also saves on greenhouse gases.

"This may pave the way for future insect farms which have a much smaller ecological footprint than most livestock farms.

“I should add that if we each composted our own organic wastes, we could not only reduce emissions but also improve the soil in our gardens and pot plants,” she said.

said, “Maggots consume food scraps for around twelve days and leave virtually no waste.”

Three other programs are being supported by the NSW Government’s Waste Less Recycle More Organics Infrastructure Large and Small (OILS) grants program.

“A plant that generates energy from food waste and produces a substance that can be used to improve soils will come to life thanks to a grant of more than $638,000 for Sydney Water.

“And organics processing facilities turning food waste into compost are being supported in Hay and Upper Hunter Shire Councils with $503,000 and $70,000 NSW Government funding respectively.”

Another eight projects have received $5 million

from the NSW Government and matched funding from the Australian Government’s Food Waste for Healthy Soils Fund.

Since 2013, the NSW Government has invested more than $42 million through its Waste Less Recycle More Organics Infrastructure Large and Small (OILS) grants program, increasing processing capacity for organics waste in NSW by 842,000 tonnes a year.

“Unfortunately in NSW, more than a third of the waste we send to landfill is food, and as that food decomposes, it creates emissions,” Mr Griffin said.

“These investments are supporting our commitment to halve the amount of organic waste sent to landfill, and reach net zero emissions from organic waste in landfill by 2030.”

Seniors Urged To Be Vigilant A SENIOR Australians are being urged to stay vigilant against scams, as the total cost swindled from older consumers skyrockets to over $11 million last year.

The Australian Competition

and Consumer Commission (ACCC) received 16,915 reports from seniors that had been scammed in 2021.

Minister for Fair Trading Eleni Petinos said $6.7 million had been

lost through false billing scams, where scammers request payment through fake invoices for goods or services which were never ordered.

"In one case, a consumer lost $760,000 when their mortgage

Online shopping scams cost Australian seniors $1.8 million last year. A common example of this is the purchase of a motor home online

via fake websites.

Big Day for Gallery

“A GREAT day for the community!”

This is how Tilligerry Art Gallery's (TAG) Sue McDonnell described their market day held on Sunday 1 May. Tilligerry was somewhat starved of community interaction during Covid-19 restrictions and as the sun burst through a grey sky, people flocked to the venue.

Some 34 stallholders took up station on the grassy slopes of McCann Park and the local 'Lemon Eucalypts' ukulele band entertained the crowd.

The Lions Club sausage sizzle worked overtime as did the local mobile coffee van.

Marine Rescue was also in attendance, fundraising and answering any queries local boat owners had.

Sue said that the Gallery stall saw sales soar on the day.

“With Mother's Day next week, locals and tourists snapped up items of original jewellery, pottery and art as presents for the special day.

“We were literally run off our feet,” she said.

Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “The Centre enjoyed a very successful bonsai show in April and there are still trees available along with the care instructions.”

Anyone who has ever considered getting into bonsai should check out the upcoming demonstration by Steve Royce from the Bonsai Group on Thursday 5 May at 11.00am at Bunnings Taylors Beach.

The Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is located on Cultural Close at Nelson Bay and is open six days a week from 10 am until 4 pm, and Sunday from 10am to 1pm. Entry is free.

Topics for the meal planning workshop will include how planning your meals will improve your family’s health and save the environment, a healthy way to diet for your family, ways to save money on groceries, reducing food waste and less stress around dinner time.

On 28 June and 13 August, the program will be hitting Tomaree Library and Raymond Terrace Library, consecutively, to help people reduce the clutter in their lives, reduce housework and get back some breathing space.

The final workshop will be held on 17 September at Raymond Terrace Library introducing Port Stephens locals to decluttering and organising textiles; challenging routines and finding ways to recycle or swap second hand resources.

Bookings are essential for all workshops and spots can be reserved by contacting Raymond Terrace Library on 4988 0111 and Tomaree Library on 4988 0670.

All of the workshops will run for two hours from 10am-12pm.

PORT Stephens Libraries are thrilled to be presenting a series of ‘Less Mess Workshops’ in the libraries throughout the region.

LessMess is a Sydney based hands-on service with fifteen years of experience in getting stuff done, and Kris Abbott, Port Stephens Council’s Library Services Manager said that over the upcoming months, there will be several workshops presented by the library to assist with organisation.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser at Sunrise Over 55’s

THE Sunrise Over 55’s village at Anna Bay will host an event for residents in support of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group on 18 May, featuring a fashion parade delivered by Nelson Bay’s Pizazz Boutique.

Madaline White, a Social Committee member at Sunrise told News Of The Area, “We will be starting with champagne and orange juice and enjoy a fashion parade

by Pizazz Boutique which will be followed by an afternoon tea and a monster raffle with over 30 prizes.”

The ladies from Sunrise will be catering the event.

At similar prior events in the village, more than 100 people have attended.

“We are trying not to spend any money, so all the money raised will go to the charity.”

Gary Wilson, President of the Sunrise Social Commit-

tee said, “It is a disease that we really want to try to get on top of, the village here is a caring village and we want to support our own.”

Sarah Smith, President of Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group, told News Of The Area, “It is a grassroots community group that has been operating for over 20 yeas and supporting men and women with breast cancer on the Tomaree Peninsula.

“The women that receive the service are all so grateful, one of the main things we do is drive people to their appointments in Newcastle and more recently Maitland, and that is a big thing with people having to travel for treatment sometimes everyday for six to eight weeks, or sometimes longer.

“For people who don’t have family in the area that is a big thing.”

Driving to and from these appointments can be exhausting, especially for those on treatment and potentially dealing with side effects like nausea.

Triples thriller at Soldiers Point Bowls

LAST week, a large crowd watched an entertaining Major Triples Final at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

Competing were Trevor Sagel, Barry Brennan and Chris Ramage (skip) versus Matt Johnstone, Daniel Collaros and Warren Shipley (skip).

Shipley's team went to an impressive 18 shots to 6 lead at the halfway point looking at a convincing win however, Ramage's team had other ideas and, after a slow start, Sagel hit form and, playing

long ends, the team won 9 of the next 10 ends to take a narrow one shot lead.

The match result now hung on the final three ends and, with Johnstone tactically playing short ends, the Shipley team won the last three ends for a final score of 26 shots to 19.

Congratulations go to Warren Shipley's team as the 2022 Triples Champions.

OFF GRID: THE WAY TO GO? “Is it a risky move to buy a property that’s totally off grid?”

OFF-GRID is an example of shifting priorities.

Previously it conjured up images of a rustic – or rusty – cabin in some remote backwater, lit by candles or kerosene lamps, cooking on a wood stove or open fire. But no more. Thanks to technological advances, off-grid today is far more sophisticated with solar panels and backup batteries providing sufficient and affordable energy to run a full home, day and night, year-round. And off-grid is not the sole domain of remote rural properties. Many residential homes are disconnecting from the grid, not simply to curb sky-rocketing energy prices, or leave a lighter footprint, but, in the face of grid overload during our increasingly hot summers, to take control over their energy supply. I know several residential properties that run totally off-grid without issue. As long as the property has the appropriate quality/quantity infrastructure and you’re comfortable with the concept, I wouldn’t be dissuaded from purchasing an off-grid property. Today’s off-grid lifestyle is definitely less Beverly Hillbillies and more Good Life (for those of us who can remember the visionary series). Your needs will be met, and the planet will love you. Port Potters Exhibition

A GROUP of potters living in Port Stephens are holding their first exhibition of their works in a gallery in Newcastle.

The exhibition is entitled ‘Emerge’.

For the potters, Riko Eguchi, Greg Howes, Caryl Bryars and David Briskham, this is an exciting step in sharing their pottery, all of which uses the same materials but delivers very different pieces of functional pottery and artwork.

The opening night is 6-8pm on 6 May at the Back to Back Galleries in Cooks Hill, and the exhibition will continue until 22 May. The gallery is also collaborating with the City of Newcastle’s Autumn Alive festival, making visiting the exhibition a wonderful and immersive cultural experience.

Rico Eguchi told News Of The Area, “Our exhibition will participate on the nights of

Friday 20 and Saturday 21 May, when there will be food and live entertainment, including Adam Miller, at the Gallery.”

The potters met when working at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre and they have each developed unique styles.

Greg Howes’ work is rustic and by no means traditional, using techniques like pit firing to produce organic pieces.

Rico Eguchi’s work leans towards traditional and functional wares.

Both Carol Bryars and David Briskham’s works have earthy styles and explore techniques like hand building.

The combined works all look distinctly different and highlight various aspects and facets of clay.

The potters hope this exhibition will be the start of many more.

Koala warning signs

Council supports EcoNetwork Port Stephens in establishing Koala Warning signs for Pearson Park

By Tara CAMPBELL ECONETWORK Port Stephens has been awarded a donation towards koala warning signs.

EcoNetwork Port Stephens is a not-for-

profit volunteer conservation organisation dedicated to promoting sustainability and protecting the natural environment in the biodiverse Port Stephens region.

In the recent Port Stephens Council

meeting on 26 April 2022, a contribution

of $2139.50 of Mayoral funds was granted to EcoNetwork Port Stephens to erect koala warning signs for Pearson Park.

The area is located at the southern end of

Sunset Beach in Tanilba Bay, where there are

a large number of off-lead dogs which pose a risk to koalas in Port Stephens.

According to the NSW Department of

Planning and Environment, one of the largest

risks to koalas is off-leash dogs.

The recommendation of the Depart-

ment is to keep dogs on leads in areas where there are koalas, particularly in

the their mating season from September to February in which koalas spend more

Did they check the formal dining area and see your husband overfeeding their prized albino Asian Arowana because he'd missed a couple of days?

These are the sorts of reasons they have possibly told you about their monitoring system.

Like the property, you also need to be alert and alarmed. I'd be refraining from any activity that you wouldn't normally do in their company.

Alternatively, throw a few towels over those strategically placed cameras and start talking in code.

Or you could use it as a social experiment. After a while you will probably forget all about the 24-hour surveillance.

How the owners deal with this is up to them.

They should have fully informed you of the set up prior to you agreeing to it, instead of being sneaky voyeurs.

SUELLEN Goyne of Corlette took out the Women’s over 50s category in the Australian Longboard Titles held at One Mile Beach over the weekend.

Goyne took out a title in the division in 2021, making this win a back to back title for the Port Stephens local.

The NSW Longboard Titles and the NSW Australian SUP Titles, both held in Port Stephens, make up the Port Stephens Surf Festival and decide the NSW teams for the upcoming Australian SUP Titles and the Australian Longboard Titles later in the year.
