COVID-19 put many things on hold.

One of them was the use of “keeper” coffee cups at cafes.

The risk of COVID-19 transmission and the inability for cafes to effectively maintain a chain of asepsis saw the environmental movement of “keeper cups” fail as they could not be a part of a businesses COVID Safe plan.

Go Green With Green Caffeine in Port Stephens FROM Page 1 official launch of Green Caffeine in Port Stephens.

Green Caffeine is a “keeper cup” program with a real difference.

No longer is the onus of cleanliness of the cup on the cups owners, but rather cafes will clean the reusable Green Caffeine cups.

Green Caffeine is simple to take part in.

Renee Collocott, Green Caffeine Ambassador told News Of The Area, “Start by downloading the app.

“Find a Green Caffeine café near you and scan the QR code at the café and collect your cup.”

Renee has been using the cups in her family’s café based in Forster for around 10 months.

It has proved a real win win.

The café has reduced the use of disposable cups and reduced costs, and landfill has been reduced.

During COVID-19 café regulars were pre-ordering their coffee through the app and collecting in a Green Caffeine fast lane at the café.

For those using Green Caffeine the service is free.

You simply order your cup of coffee, scan the app and collect your coffee.

Next time you grab a cup of coffee at a Green Caffeine café, you return the cup and get a new one.

Cafes simply put the green caffeine cups through their dishwashers and they can then be reused just like a non takeaway coffee cup.

Take-away coffee cups are difficult to recycle.

Plan for the Terrace

They are lined with plastic which means that they don’t simply decompose.

The Little Pantry at Medowie has been participating in Green Caffeine for around six months and more cafes are set to join the movement in Port Stephens.

This will see Green Caffeine available from the NSW South Coast consistently through to Coffs Harbour.

There are Green Caffeine cafes across Australia with some in remote areas who are also passionate about the amount of waste that goes into landfill such as Thursday Island.

The team at Plastic Free Port Stephens have welcomed the Green Caffeine movement to Port Stephens and hope that it will make a positive impact on waste.

Green Caffeine is a joint

program with the Hunter Joint Organisation and other member councils, which is partially funded

by EPA Waste Less Recycle More Program.

Port Stephens Council are proud to support cafes who choose to take up this free reusable café cup system to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill in Port Stephens.

Renee also shared this tip for the use of Green Caffeine cups, “I use them for my 20 month old child, we share a banana smoothie in two of the cups and they are perfect for saving on spills,” she said.

The Green Caffeine App tracks the number of cups you save from landfill and the total number of cups saved by everyone who participates in the exchange.

Port Stephens residents can download the app now and be ready to start supporting the environment at their favorite cafes as the new Port Stephens branded Green Caffeine cups are launched.

“In 2020 we asked the community about their vision for Raymond Terrace — we heard they want more shady spots, improved footpaths and better connections from the town centre to the river,” Mayor Palmer said.

Delivery of the PDP will roll out over the next 20 years with funding coming through a range of revenue sources, including grant funding and developer contributions, but Mayor Palmer said Council is ready for action.

“Improving Raymond Terrace is a key action the community elected me on and I’m proud that at our last meeting we committed to tapping into a range of grant funding programs that will see us get started straight away,” he said.

Council’s PS2020 program has already contributed $750,000 to the development of the Public Domain Plan and will fund community projects in Raymond Terrace.

A further $200,000 comes from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and $400,000 from the NSW

‘Hive’ arrives for NDIS participants

By Doug CONNOR A NEW support service has arrived in Port Stephens for

people accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Life Unlimited Support Services have expanded their NDIS Day Support Program, with the opening of a ‘Hive’ in Medowie, offering group day

programs for local people with disabilities.

Managing Director Megan Power said there had previously been a gap in support options for NDIS participants in the local area.

“I have worked in the industry for many years and saw a huge gap to fill for participants,” she said.

“We saw a huge need for our ‘Hive’, so that people with disabilities can get together with their peers.”

Since beginning to offer support in January last year, Life Unlimited Support Services has grown from supporting one participant to 12.

Staff and participants now have access to the ‘Hive’, which is located at 6 Waropara Road, Medowie, in the overflow Church building.

“We have now got 14 staff and we have other staff coming on board to do counselling,” said Megan.

The ‘Hive’ will now operate as a home base for a range of day programs designed to promote social interaction and capacity building for people with disabilities.

“We run an array of different activities.

Support Worker Deirdre Kelly, said the social opportunities and community engagement elements to the Hive’s programs, have made a big difference to her son Cal. “Everyone can do one-onone support, but if you are just with your support worker, you are not accomplishing a social

goal.

“As a parent, I have noticed a difference in Cal since he has become more locally based, he is fitting into the community more.

“Just to see the participants socialising and interacting with each other, and egging each other on, is fantastic.”

Programs are designed to encourage participants to become more involved in their local community.

“The thing I like about it, and I am probably a little bit Medowie proud, is that the guys have a real sense of community here,” said Deidre.

“We help out at the community gardens, who grow food for the community soup kitchen, our participants are working at local businesses, and everything gets put back into the community,” she said.

Megan Power said it was important for local people with disabilities to maintain control over their own lives.

“We want the programs to be driven by participants.

“We want them to be involved in the decisionmaking process.

Heatherbrae Arrest AT 7.00am on 21 February 2021, a 27-year-old female, who is known to Police, was arrested after colliding with traffic lights in Heatherbrae.

It was established that she had been driving whilst disqualified and the vehicle had been stolen.

On arrival at the scene Police located the woman lying beside the vehicle, appearing to be drug affected.

Police will allege that during a search of the vehicle, they located prohibited drugs and a taser.

The woman was transported by ambulance to the John Hunter Hospital where blood and urine testing was conducted. At the hospital, further drugs, believed to be methamphetamine, were located on the woman.

Due to the amount of drugs located, Port Stephens-Hunter PD Detectives executed a Search Warrant at the woman’s accommodation, where a stolen motorcycle was located and seized.

The woman has been charged and Bail Refused until court on 1 March 2021 with Supply/Possess Drug, Take & Drive conveyance without consent, Disqualified drive, Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit & GIC (Motor Vehicle).

$12 million for public schools HUNTER schools are set to receive new and improved facilities, with more than $12 million announced for local schools as part of the Berejiklian Government’s $120 million Regional Renewal Program.

Since the announcement of the Regional Renewal Program in October last year, schools have been invited to apply for renewal projects to improve their school

facilities.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said that 59 local public schools will have upgrades to learning, sporting, amenities, building and administration facilities.

“This investment by the Government is part of our commitment to build a safer and stronger regional NSW,” Mr Martin said.

“It will ensure regional

students can thrive in a great learning environment, no matter where they live or what their circumstances may be.

“Delivery of these projects will be undertaken in the next 18 months as part of the Berejiklian Government’s economic stimulus package for NSW schools.”

Plans to cull the cats

By Tara CAMPBELL ON Friday 26 February 2021 the Animal Justice Party presented a community petition with over 11700 signatures on it to the Port of Newcastle.

This petition follows the protest that occurred on 14 January 2021, demanding that the Port of Newcastle call off all future plans to cull the cats on the Stockton Breakwall.

Darren Brollo, Animal Justice Party Regional Group Leader said, “We are calling on the Port of Newcastle to confirm there will be no more guerrilla-style shooting

operations targeting these cats “The Port of Newcastle can no longer be silent on this serious issue.

“Last year’s massacre was cruel and unnecessary.

“The possibility of another massacre going ahead is unthinkable.

“The Port of Newcastle must listen to the tens of thousands of people who overwhelmingly oppose any further slaughter, and make a public commitment to no further carnage,” he said.

The Port of Newcastle has retained its silence since the initial cull, with only one comment made since the action.

“It’s difficult to give it a huge amount of credibility

given that there are a number of replicated names on it.

“I don’t believe for a moment that all those signatures are from the local area,” a Port of Newcastle spokesperson said of the petition.

The Animal Justice Party are seeking some form of communication between the Port of Newcastle and their party, and to ensure that no other action against cats on the breakwall occurs without communication between the Port and those looking after the cats.

The Stray Cat Rescue has been working with the cats in a trap, neuter and release plan, aiming to rehome and adopt the remaining breakwall cats.

Friday 19 February until Sunday 21 February.

SLSC Funding Boost SURF Life Saving Clubs in Port Stephens and the Myall Coast will benefit from upgraded equipment and bolstered training programs to keep beachgoers safe.

The Australian Government is providing $9.7 million in additional funding to Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) as it continues to protect beachgoers and improve volunteer lifesaving skills.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the funding would be vital for Hunter Surf Life Saving clubs where volunteers have performed thousands of patrol hours this season and rely on the best skills and equipment to keep beachgoers safe.

“This means each surf lifesaving club will now be able to access up to $10,000 per annum over the next

AFTER conducting a tour of the nine sites considered most viable for the development of a Port Stephens Cultural Centre, the Tomaree Museum Association Committee unanimously agreed that Fly Point, Nelson Bay was the most suitable location.

The selection of Fly Point as preferred site may come as a surprise to community members who have been following the Tomaree Museum Association’s progress, as the Tomaree Headland had long been touted as the ideal location to develop a publicly owned regional museum for Port Stephens.

Tomaree Museum Association Committee Chairperson Ian Farnsworth said that despite a change in preference to the Fly

which promotes Port Stephens.

Point site, there would be a continued focus on ensuring the future of the historically significant Headland location.

“This may come as a surprise to our members and friends, but we believe that Fly Point will allow a magnificent integrated community venue,” said Mr Farnsworth.

“We have a continuing interest in ensuring the Tomaree Headland remains in public hands and for the future of the Tomaree Lodge,” he said.

“We are not just dumping that site, simply choosing the best location for the museum.”

Mr Farnsworth said that Fly Point stands out because of its beautiful location and known heritage and environmental value, its centrality, better options for management of risks, its accessibility, and the ability to build on established community facilities.

land site managed by Port Stephens Council.

Mr Farnsworth stressed that there was a long way to go in convincing Port Stephens Council to support the venture on the chosen site.

“Although initial discussions on site selection have been made with Port Stephens Council, further consultation is required to confirm the viability and availability of this site in consideration of the business case for the Port Stephens Cultural Centre.”

Mr Farnsworth said an integral part of the Tomaree Museum Project includes the Museum offering satellite protection for the heritage sites of the Tomaree Lodge and Fingal Outer Lighthouse.

“In a similar way to how Newcastle Museum looks after Fort Scratchley, we can see a similar plan working here in Port Stephens.”

Bipolar Book raises awareness

SHARON Yardley is a mum, and a teacher, and she has bipolar.

After a psychotic episode whilst teaching ten years ago, she has fought hard and worked to function, whilst having bipolar disorder.

Recently, Sharon has published her first book ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’, a book about her mental health journey, aiming to overcome the stigma of mental health.

Her book covers her lowest of lows, as well as her process to heal and live in a society where bipolar is pushed to the back.

The notion to change the field’s name to honour John Nell’s contributions to the Port Stephens area was raised in a council meeting on 12 May 2020 and met with high regard.

It was moved by Mayor Ryan Palmer and seconded

by Councillor Chris Doohan and received overwhelming support from the whole Council.

“I believe it’s a really good dedication to an outstanding councillor who has spent a lot of his life dedicated to the community, but particularly, the sporting community in East Ward here,” Mayor Ryan Palmer said.

“I started blogging, and people started paying attention and listening.

“People started reaching out saying that I was writing how they feel.

“It grew from there in a really organic way.

I started writing longer versions of my stories and it all just came out.

Sharon spoke with News Of The Area about the power of sharing her story with people, and expressing the absolute truth of her journey.

On 24 February 2021 Mayor Ryan Palmer unveiled the sign with Councillor John at the Tomaree Sports Complex, renaming the field to ‘John Nell Match Field.’

Sharon hopes that ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ can find its way to people who need to hear her story.

Her goal is to ensure that people start breaking down the barriers and stigma of mental health, particularly in higher professions.

She hopes that one day, mental health will be normalised, and that there will be an understanding of all illnesses, including bipolar.

Tomago Break In JUST after midnight on 27 February 2021 Port StephensHunter Police received information that two men had broken into the Hunter Galvanising plant on Punt Road, at Tomago.

Thursday, 4 March, 2021

were detected running from the plant.

Police, in company with a police dog, gave chase through thick scrub land, through water courses, and over fences, and finally apprehended the two males.

Police will allege that the two males entered the plant by cutting a hole in the perimeter fence, then broke into a number of buildings, ransacking them, stealing electronic devices and power tools.

A Coke machine was

found destroyed and police will allege that the two men apprehended are responsible for the damage.

Both men, a 44 year old, and a 42 year old, were charged at Raymond Terrace Police Station with aggravated break/enter and steal, and were refused bail to appear before the local court.

Is that really a ‘thing’?”

FIRSTLY, thanks for checking in to randrproperty on Instagram! I hope you’re enjoying keeping up with our listings, sales and community activities. And yes, pantry peeking is definitely a ‘thing’. While keeping your entire home clean and tidy throughout the sales period is essential, often forgotten is what lies behind cupboard doors and buyers will look, generally to see how the space is configured – but also to sticky beak. It is regularly said that kitchens sell homes; storage being a key component, so clean, organized cupboards including the pantry – the heart of every meal – creates a sense of space and calm. Messy packets spilling and bottles oozing onto shelves not only creates a sense of chaos they are also a foundation for mice and rats. Opening a cupboard door to be greeted by chaos and worse - mouse droppings - is a major turn off for buyers. Pantries don’t have to be filled with expensive products, it’s not about status, it’s about care for a home a vendor is seeking to sell. With a neat and tidy pantry you can smile knowing you have the pantry peeker’s seal of approval!

Tomago fire, two seriously injured AT around 10:19pm on 24 February 2021, two persons were seriously injured by a fire at an industrial warehouse in Tomago.

Police were called to the Tomago address with the report of two people being seriously injured by fire.

On arrival, Fire and Ambulance officers were already on scene treating the victims for serious burns.

Both victims were conveyed to John Hunter Hospital immediately, before being transferred to Royal North Shore Burns Unit.

One of the victims has suffered burns to 50 percent of his body and is in a serious condition.

Enquires are continuing however it would appear that an accelerant has caught alight causing the injuries to the persons.

DEAR News Of The Area,

WITH reference to your p.4 article in Port Stephens News Of The Area 25 February 2021 edition, about Volunteerism at Anna Bay; I would like to introduce Stephen Pritchard, of Anna Bay. Stephen is an unknown volunteer.

He takes his dog down to the Anna Bay beach EVERY DAY! The dog goes for a swim and this gives time for Stephen to check the Plastic Bag dispenser for doggy Bags (for droppings) and have a look around and in particular, the toilets.

Now let me say this!

Stephen is NOT a Port Stephens Council representative, just a concerned member of the community and apart from some toilet paper being thrown around (which he would clean up), he knows he has no authority to do anymore.

However, say, a toilet is flushing continuously, he would contact Council.

Dear Doug, I wish you could have given me a bit more information about your musical tastes.

I’m going to use a bit of artistic liberty.

If you are sensitive enough to write to an agony aunt, I’m guessing you like a bit of Creedence Clearwater Revival mixed in with some Fleetwood Mac and on your more sombre and reflective days, some Cat Stevens and Simon and Garfunkel interspersed with the Ten Percent Happier podcast.

And who could blame you.

Car travel can transport your mind and body.

There’s nothing quite like a road trip, even if you’re just taking your teenager to school because she missed the bus – again.

And yet you find yourself, not only stressed at her lack of time management, but suddenly being mentally thrashed by a playlist that includes Doja Cat and Cardi B with lines such as ‘pop that like Ginkgo biloba / That booty don’t need no more soda’ and you wonder why you forked out all that cash on English tuition.

In this instance, there are a few options.

You can either alternate – song for song – so only half the trip is the mental equivalent of being stuck in a lift and verbally assaulted by an angry stranger, or you can say that the driver is the DJ (which will work until your daughter is practicing for her driver’s licence).

The other alternative is headphones (on your daughter) or some time out from music so you can ask her questions that she doesn’t want to answer under the guise of parent-child bonding.

All in all, I’d say just avoid the situation and give her a bus timetable.

Port Business Builds Donated RFS Fire Trucks

THE Government of the United Arab Emirates has generously gifted seven Category 13 Bulk Water Carriers to Australia after witnessing the unprecedented fire devastation in 2019/2020.

The seven fire tankers are valued over $3.4 million and will be dispersed across NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS), ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACT ESA), Western Australia Department of Fire and Emergency Services (WA DFES), and Country Fire

The vehicles were manufactured here in Port Stephens and the official handover of the vehicles from the UAE Ambassador, H.E. Abdulla Al Subousi to the NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliott was held at the Varley Tomago facilities.

This is where luck played a part, the jack hitting one of Leo’s bowls and bouncing back up the green to where Mick’s bowls were situated, giving him the two shots and the final score of 31-29 and the Minor Singles Title.

It was a game well and her young career.

Kobie will now head to the Mad Mex Maroubra Pro, a place she has tasted victory before, sitting 14th on the rankings.

“I was just super happy to make it to the final so to win feels amazing,” Enright said.

“I got to fall in love with surfing again and enjoy all of this.

“It’s been an awesome event getting to surf such a great point break like this.

Athletes will be able to roll over points from 2020 QS events into the current season.

Australia/Oceania will receive an allocation of ten men’s and eight women’s spots onto the Challenger Series based on the regional QS rankings.

By Marian SAMPSON IN a huge week of surfing in Port Stephens the region showcased its great beaches for surfing and the region turned on great conditions for the Pro. The finals of the Port Stephens Pro saw a change of venue from Birubi Beach to One Mile Beach.

The two beaches, while on the same part of the East Coast Of New South Wales can offer up very different conditions.

Jackson Baker and Kobie Enright took out impressive victories at the Port Stephens Pro which was the second event of the 2021 World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS).

The three-day event saw an array of conditions with competition wrapping up in fun, two-to-three foot waves at One Mile Beach.

Fresh off a fifth-place finish at the recent Great Lakes Pro, Jackson Baker came into the Port Stephens QS1,000 with one thing in mind – winning.

In the final, Baker came up against the form surfer of 2021 Jordan Lawler in what was set to be a blockbuster and the pair didn’t disappoint.

Lawler was unable to conjure the form he showed earlier in the day while Baker posted an excellent two-wave total of 16.70 to claim his fourth QS victory.

“Four wins from four finals feels pretty good,” Baker said.

“But I think it just adds more pressure for the future if I make a final. It’s been such a great couple of weeks to be back competing.”

Baker started working last year and got a dose of the real world.

He is now enjoying being back in competitive surfing.
