Port Stephens students share in $40,000 in Mayoral scholarships FROM Page 1

students have received a scholarship this year, with two siblings doing the same degree splitting a $2000 scholarship between them.

“A scholarship can make a big difference to a student starting their academic journey – to buy essentials like textbooks, a laptop or covering the cost of student accommodation,” Mayor Palmer said.

“This year we’re delighted to have an increase in the number of strong female applicants, with seventeen of the 21 scholarships awarded to local women.

“The course list is equally as impressive, with students studying everything from biomedical science and archaeology, to commerce, nursing, design, paramedicine and engineering.”

Public High School for Medowie

MEMBER for Port Stephens Kate Washington has once again called for a public high school in Medowie.

Currently, there is only one

high school in Medowie, which is a Catholic High School.

Ms Washington moved to Medowie in 2006 with young children, and one child on the way.

Her youngest is now about to finish her schooling, yet a public high school in Medowie is still not built.

“Instead, the need has only increased significantly since 2006, when I was part of a Department of Education working group looking into the provision of secondary schooling in west Port Stephens,” Kate Washington MP said.

In 2011, former Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli visited Medowie and stated that he would make the project shovel ready in 2011.

However, the land for the high school, which was purchased in 1983, remains untouched.

“As it has been for a number of years now, more than 1000 kids are bused across the region to get to high school and it happens all over again in the afternoons.

“Local high schools are over capacity, and the planning strategies expect an additional 7000 dwellings in Medowie by 2036, with many of those already starting construction.

“Instead of addressing an obvious need and building a public high school in Medowie, the Perrottet Government has decided to expand the feeder high schools so that they can accommodate over 1000 extra students between them.”

Ms Washington has addressed this issue in Parliament multiple times and wrote to Sarah Mitchell, Minister for Education for a briefing last year with a follow up this year, however says she is yet to receive a response.

“Every Member in this House has heard me speak in this place about the need for a public high school in Medowie - I know I'm like a broken record but trust me and I am sick of hearing about it and speaking about it too, but I will keep on doing it for as long as this government keeps failing to deliver on its promise to the community which I represent,” she said.

Ms Washington will be hosting a community forum to update local families and to build a path forward on Thursday 17 March, 6PM at Medowie Social.

“We have no public high school and it's about time that the government started delivering on their responsibility to deliver public education where it's most needed,” Ms Washington said.

Port Stephens Council permits sale of 109 Foreshore Drive FROM Page 1

community works from the sale of the residentially zoned land.

These works included the following: Port Stephens Koala Plan of Management ($200,000), foreshore improvements and drainage pipes for a number of sites across the Tilligerry Peninsula including the Tanilba Foreshore and Lemon Tree Passage Foreshore ($150,000), construction of a pathway along Kirrang Drive, Medowie ($400,000), conversion of the croquet court in Boomerang Park ($25,000), 7 Day Makeover in Raymond Terrace ($180,000), 7 Day Makeover in Karuah ($180,000), resealing, sealing and/or rehabilitation of priority roads including some car parks, re-sheeting of gravel roads and new pathways across Port Stephens to ensure the safety of our residents including school children (minimum $1,000,000 or balance of sale), replacement of the toilet block at Fly Point ($140,000), replacement of the toilet block at Shoal Bay boat ramp ($130,000), pathway connections for school children and the community in Hinton ($200,000) and continuation of the pathway through the

Mallabula Sports Complex ($50,000).

109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay is a standalone parcel of 557m2 of operational land which is immediately adjacent to a property of community land which extends from Foreshore Drive to and along the beachfront.

Following Council assessments of the parcel of land, it was determined that one koala feed tree exists on the property, with approximately fifteen trees on adjacent properties.

The motion was supported by Councillors Chris Doohan, Steve Tucker, Glen Dunkly and Matthew Bailey, whilst Councillors Giacomo Arnott, Peter Francis, Peter Kafer, Leah Anderson and Jason Wells voted against the sale.

Mayor Ryan Palmer utilised both his personal and Mayoral votes to pass the sale.

“We don't have a lot of residential-zoned blocks of land across the Tomaree Peninsula in particular, and this is one here that can provide funding for a lot of urgent community projects across the Port Stephens area and that's why I’ve raised this motion.

“I acknowledge that not everyone wants to sell this, but there's a lot of good

that can come from a tough decision.

“I just want to fund some projects across our community; I'm not sitting around in some evil cave thinking about how I can screw the community overall,” Mayor Palmer said.

This action was not taken lightly, with five councillors lodging a rescission motion.

At the same Council meeting, Councillor Giacomo Arnott proposed to redirect funding from the sale of land

at Fingal Bay to the urgent community works program.

“At the next Council meeting we will be trying to reverse the decision of 109 Foreshore Drive, and in the meantime, Council staff will be unable to proceed with the sale.

“I’m hoping that reversing the decision will be made much easier now that an alternate funding source has been identified and approved,” Cr Arnott said.

Newly elected Councillor

Leah Anderson voted against the motion, believing it to be a betrayal of community trust.

“What a shocking betrayal of community trust - I’m learning fast about the power of the Mayor and a mayoral minute.

“I could not be more disappointed for the community to not be able to make decisions around the sale of this property to fund these very important projects,” Cr Anderson said.

A notice of rescind will mean that the resolution cannot be carried into effect until the motion of rescission has been dealt with at the next Port Stephens Council meeting.

“You don't hurt the community in order to say that the Council will give to them what they’ve been asking for for years.

“There's a right way and then there’s an easy way, and unfortunately, an easy way is what was proposed tonight,” Cr Arnott said. q Map of 109 Foreshore Drive (orange) and surrounding areas.

Educational Pathways Program

By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens high school students are being encouraged to explore exciting career opportunities through the expansion of the successful Educational Pathways Program to nineteen schools across the Hunter region.

Included in the program are Hunter River High, Irrawang High and Tomaree High Schools.

Minister for Skills and Training Alister Henskens said the NSW Government invested $13.5 million to expand the program sixfold across the state, hiring specialist teachers to work with careers advisers

to create more engaging opportunities for students.

“As part of the program we’ll be giving students the opportunity to undertake feefree apprenticeships and pretraineeships so they can ‘testdrive’ different vocational education and training

options,” Mr Henskens said.

“We want to promote the wide range of jobs and career pathways available to students, and ensure they have the tools to help them get started on their journey.”

MINISTER for Defence Peter Dutton announced on February 21 that the Australian Government has committed $1.5 billion to upgrade and extend inservice support for the Royal Australian Air Force’s Hawk 127 Lead-In Fighter Training System, based in the Hunter region and Perth.

“This 10-year $1.5 billion contract with BAE Systems Australia will progressively update the performance of the fast-jet combat training aircraft, including an engine replacement, to meet the emerging needs of pilots preparing to fly the F-35A Lightning II, the F/A 18F

Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler until 2032,” Minister Dutton said.

“This is another great example of how Defence is demonstrating its commitment to strategic objectives and, in this case, bolstering Defence’s aviation capability.

“Defence has already made significant investments at RAAF Base Williamtown and RAAF Base Pearce.

“This contract reaffirms our ongoing commitment to supporting regional development and building our national resilience.

“The contract with BAE Systems Australia will sustain 350 direct jobs, culminating in

Mitchell said the program has already introduced hundreds of students to different training and career pathways.

“We have already seen a tripling of the number of students in pilot schools enrolling in schoolbased apprenticeships and traineeships, so the expansion of this program to 120 new high schools is really exciting,” Ms Mitchell said.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the program aims to improve education and career pathways for high school students by connecting them to real-world skills, training and experience.

“This program represents a real win for students and will help to broker relationships between schools, local employers and industries,” Mr Martin said.

War Memorial to be built on Ferodale Drive

MEDOWIE will receive a new war memorial just in time for ANZAC Day. The new memorial will be based at Medowie Social on Ferodale Road, providing a safe location for commemorations whilst improving the overall experience.

Central Ward Councillor Chris Doohan says that the new memorial will be a great addition to the community.

“There’s a number of problems with the current war memorial at Lions Park, such as lack of parking, limited space and poor visibility, which impact on services and pose a considerable safety risk,” Cr Doohan said.

“Our Council has worked closely with the Medowie RSL Sub-Branch to find a more suitable location and to design a memorial that respectfully honours Australia’s servicemen and women while catering for growing crowds.

“As both a Royal Australian Air Force veteran and local Councillor, I am proud to have been able to help deliver this new memorial for Medowie.”

The memorial incorporates a corten steel silhouette of a lone soldier, alongside sandstone plinths and commemorative plantings like Gallipoli rosemary, Gallipoli roses and Grevillea 'Spirit of ANZAC'.

An Eternal Flame will be included at a later stage.

The project has been funded by the RSL subBranch, Port Stephens Council Central Ward Funds and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects.

Medowie RSL Sub-Branch President Ian Harding said it’s a great outcome for the community.

“With a growing population and the increasing popularity of the ANZAC Day dawn service, this new location will provide a safer environment to conduct memorial services,” Mr Harding said.

“We have worked closely

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

By Jane CROCKER FEBRUARY marked national Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Approximately 1,400 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year in Australia and it is the eighth most common cancer amongst women.

Tragically, survival rates for this form of cancer remain low, with the five-year survival rate standing at around 44 percent.

Awareness of the disease is critical in increasing the chance of survival, with the current rate primarily driven

Landcare Volunteers

LOCAL Landcare groups are always working hard to improve the environment.

Last week the Soldiers Point and Salamander Bay group swapped their usual weeding program for one of planting.

The group planted koala-feed trees Euc Robusta, commonly known as Swamp Mahogany, and Euc Teretecornis, known as Terrific Tere.

The planting was conducted at both John Eckersley Park which is located diagonally opposite Bannisters and the Seaview Crescent Reserve on the corner of Seaview Crescent and Soldiers Point Road.

Also planted were some Coastal Rosemary bushes

and feature trees which are known as Water Gums, which are not actually Eucalypts, but offer a lovely ambience to the areas.

The trees which were planted were raised at the Ngioka Centre at Little Beach.

Landcare group member Cherylle Stone told News Of The Area, “It was a lovely change to be planting much needed koala feed trees, we spend most of our Landcare volunteer hours weeding and to be adding to the environment through planting was thoroughly enjoyable.”

Feral Animals In Mambo

MEMBERS of the community are calling for Port Stephens Councillors to do something to control foxes and feral cats in the Mambo Wetlands Reserve.

Neil Fraser has been surveying avian fauna in the reserve for the past ten to fifteen years.

His studies have shown a steady decline in the presence of many local bird species over that time.

“Feral predators are part of the problem,” said Neil.

“I have seen a fox in the reserve on a number of occasions and most recently I have seen cat footprints accompanied by a kitten.”

Neil has been advised that Council does not currently have the funding to address the issue.

NSW Local Land Services state, “Feral cats are one of the primary causes of the decline and extinction of native Australian species.

“Cats prey on small native and exotic mammals, birds, lizards and insects.

“An estimated 80 endangered and threatened species are preyed on by wild cats.

“Feral cats can also spread and carry diseases that affect humans and other animals.”

The Invasive Species Council states, “Of the 21 completely extinct marsupials and rodents in Australia, the red fox and cat have most probably contributed to the extinction of all but two.

“Foxes and cats are also blamed for the loss from the mainland of another nine species that survive

by late diagnosis.

Unfortunately, a late diagnosis can often result in the cancer spreading to other organs, which in turn makes it harder to treat.

Some common signs to be aware of include pressure, pain or discomfort in the abdomen or pelvis, a swollen or bloated abdomen, changes in appetite or toilet habits, indigestion, sickness or nausea and changes in the menstrual cycle.

Experiencing these symptoms doesn’t automatically mean there is a serious issue, but it is always best to seek medical advice.

The colour for ovarian cancer awareness is Teal.

During the month there have been several ‘Teal Teas’ held in the area, raising both much needed funding for research, but also to promote awareness.

Kim Chamberlain, who along with colleagues Jacqueline and Chloe, organised a Teal Tea event at Tanilba Bay Pharmacy said, “The more people who are aware of the disease, how to reduce the risk and what signs to look out for the better.

“Even if it prompts one person to get a check-up then it’s had a positive impact.”

Donations from this and other similar fundraising events will go to the Cancer Council NSW who invested $20m in cancer research funding in 2019/2020.

Emergency Services Update

Truck Fire On 21 February 2022 Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue, joined

by Fire and Rescue Tarro, attended a truck fire on the Pacific Highway.

The truck’s brakes were smouldering following the quick thinking of the driver, who knocked down the flames to prevent the whole truck from catching on fire.

Both Brigades worked quickly and efficiently to cool the brakes of the truck to ensure no further damage.

Stockton Station Earlier this week, Fire and Rescue NSW Stockton began hosting the Stockton Ambulance crew who will be utilising the fire station as their own whilst the ambulance station undergoes renovations.

Over the upcoming months, both crews are planning on taking advantage of the situation and engaging in training drills together whilst familiarising the crews.

Flooding NSW SES wishes to remind all

residents to be cautious of roads affected by storms and flash flooding and to never drive through floodwater.

Driving hazards can include mud, debris, chemical spills, damaged road services and fallen branches.

All dangerous traffic hazards should be reported to Service NSW on 131 700.

Gus the Dog Port Stephens Hunter Police District had a unique visitor to their station this week after community members reported Gus the dog frantically running on the road in Port Stephens.

The officers managed to catch him and give him a ride back to the station where he instantly made friends and wanted to feel like the rest of the crew - so was given a uniform to wear.

ON Saturday 26 February, Marine Rescue Port Stephens

had just commenced their weekly Saturday training when the crew received a

phone call from the radio base for a five-metre open runabout that had engine failure just outside the heads.

Duty Skipper Laurie directed PS30 to conduct this rescue operation.

No sooner had Laurie tasked PS30, the radio base called PS31 for a five-metre open runabout who had three people on board, who had engine failure and was drifting towards the rocks at Yacaaba Head.

The crew of PS30 and

PS31 arrived on scene very quickly as they were training in Shoal Bay. The waters were rough outside with a 2-metre swell at the heads.

Both PS30 and PS31 safely towed both vessels back to Shoal Bay boat ramp.

The skippers of both the distressed vessels thanked the Marine Rescue Port Stephens crew for their assistance before the crew headed back to continue their training.

A return to normality for Probus Club

MEMBERS of the Probus Club Of Fingal Bay are elated that their club's activities are nearly back to normal.

The Club’s February meeting included a slide show presented by Lynn Moffitt and Trish McClung, recalling what events were enjoyed during the past few months.

Roy Jeffery then told of the hard work and pleasure that he had had exploring his family’s history recently.

The Area, “A delightful part of the meeting was the usual celebration of members’ birthdays with suitable paper hats provided.”

The February raffle celebrated Valentine's Day with chocolate and wine.

“A Fingal favourite barbecue followed a few days later at the Roy Wood Reserve,

it was threatened by rain which was obligingly nowhere in sight.

“The enjoyment of sunshine, sausages and salads was just what we needed,” she said.

The Fingal Bay Probus Club meets at 9.30am on the second Monday of each month at the Fingal Bay Sports Club,

Port Stephens Probus Club BBQ

50 MEMBERS of the Probus Club of Port Stephens enjoyed another great activity recently, with the February BBQ transferring to the Nelson Bay Community Hall due to the rain.

A bit of precipitation wasn’t going to stop the get together.

The Master Chefs got a little damp but forged on and cooked the meat to perfection while the members reconnected enthusiastically upstairs with lots of chatter and laughter, fun and friendship galore.

“All in all, it was a very enjoyable day,” she said.

TWO-SDAY was a day of celebration for the children at Tanilba Bay Public School.

A unique palindrome date, 22/02/2022 reading the same either way, but also an ambigram, as it’s possible to read the same if flipped upside down.

According to numerologists the number two is associated with profound insight, making this

After two years of disruption to learning and connecting with their friends, the school's wellness team took the opportunity to introduce some colourful fun with a ‘two’ themed dress up on this once in a lifetime date.

LAST week Jeanne Socrates sailed in the Saturday afternoon race with Port Stephens Yacht Club.

She is considered yachting royalty by some, having circumnavigated the world in her yacht solo.

Jeanne took 339 days aboard her monohull yacht to complete her

circumnavigation and at the time was the oldest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world.

Jeanne has sailed some amazing passages and is the oldest person to have completed a circumnavigation around the five great capes; Cape Horn, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, South East Cape of Tasmania and the

South Cape of Stewart Island.

Jeanne Socrates told News Of The Area, “The passage took much longer than I anticipated, it was almost a year to complete, four more months than expected.”

As Jeanne took the helm of Cherylle Stone’s Subzero confidently around the Bay, she shared stories of her adventures and spoke of the book that is underway telling the tales of her many days at sea.

Her travels have not been

The duo have already sailed their vessel across the Atlantic.

Jeanne is currently working with the Guinness World Book Of Records to have a second world record verified.

Upon leaving Australia,

Jeanne is off to Canada to reunite with her vessel Nereida.

Car park bollard concerns

DEAR News of the Area,

PORT Stephens Council upgraded William St, Raymond Terrace some five months ago.

The Federal Government gave country councils $1 million to upgrade the main streets in their shires.

Port Stephens council only did half the job, by only top dressing half of William St Raymond Terrace and leaving the road in front of the Police Station and the courthouse in Raymond Terrace untouched.

With Port Stephens Council's famous patchwork road, maybe the Police and the

court are unworthy of a good road. BUT this is not the real problem.

The bollards that were installed on the section of the upgrade in each car park have fallen apart after three months. They are made out of hollow rubber, and are not long enough to extend the full width of motor vehicles wheels, this could cause serious damage to the underside of cars.

The bollards should be made of a solid reinforced material such as concrete that will last ten years or so.

Maybe Port Stephens Council needs a new engineer and West Ward councilors so that rate payers get the best for their money.

“It’s usually the fringe areas of a local government area that get forgotten, so it’s crucial that we hold our elected representatives accountable and the best way we can do this is with as many locals banding together,” Secretary Lea Harris said.

The association is still advocating for a supermarket in the area, updated facilities, and parks in the estates, as well as a multitude of other issues relevant to the community.

THE Nelson Bay Division Two Samurai team qualified for the 2021 Golf Croquet State Pennants final, progressing through the Hunter region.

The final was played at Croquet NSW's Tempe headquarters on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 February 2022.

The players who travelled to Sydney were Jim Ball, Liz Friend, Peter Gordon, Karen Lilly, Cheryl Lloyd and Rae Uptin. They played three games against the other clubs that qualified, Canberra, Mosman Blue and Sutherland.

In the first match against Canberra, Peter Gordon and Rae Uptin played the singles with Peter winning 7-5, 7-4 and Rae losing 6-7, 4-7.

Liz Friend and Karen Lilly played the doubles going down narrowly 2-7, 7-6, 5-6, for a 1-2 match loss.

Torrential rain then caused the Tuesday afternoon’s play to be abandoned and for the second and third matches the games were modified to shorten the time required in order to ensure that the competition concluded as scheduled.

Mosman Blue were beaten 2-1 with Peter Gordon winning his singles and Jim Ball and Cheryl Lloyd winning

their doubles. Sutherland were beaten 3-0 with Peter Gordon and Rae Uptin winning the singles and Liz Friend and Cheryl Lloyd winning the doubles.

Among the surfers were locals Jasmine Sampson, Jimmi Hill, Mike and Ellie Clayton-Brown and Joshua Stretton.

Local wildcards Jimmi Hill (14) and Jasmine Sampson (20) from Bay Area Boardriders Club were both feeling positive going into the event, especially with their home advantage.
