q Past Councillor John Nell was recognised for over 30 years of service to the Local Government Area.

By Marian SAMPSON CORLETTE resident November Sheehan has been named Port Stephens Citizen of the Year.

She created the Facebook group Heart Letter Pen at the peak of the pandemic to support elderly residents in aged care who were feeling lonely or anxious.

It’s since become a nationwide network.

She’s one of six community members and groups recognised at the 2021 Port Stephens Annual Awards, which were held as part of Australia Day celebrations at Raymond Terrace.

Sadly, there were no festivities at Nelson Bay this year however there are plans in place to ensure that 2023 will see the return of the festivities in the Bay.

Scholarships support local women to achieve their goals in 2022 FROM Page 1

“Now in its fifth year, the Port Stephens International Women’s Day Scholarships support local women to achieve an important goal, whether it’s related to the arts, culture, environment, business, community, health or sport,” Mayor Palmer said.

“There are so many women already doing incredible things across our region, and we know there are many more out there who have an important goal or idea and just need a hand to get them off the ground.

“These scholarships are about providing that added financial support to help make their dreams a reality in 2022.”

2021 recipient Nikita Austin said the scholarship meant she could run her first inclusive school holiday program through her speech pathology.

“We had a great turn out and got some excellent feedback.

“The money helped with hiring the space, and filling it with

resources needed for the children,” she said.

“I would definitely encourage anyone with a passion for supporting Port Stephens to apply.

"The scholarship can really help to bring your visions to life - exactly what happened with me.”

Mayor Palmer said the scholarships are open to local women aged 16 years and over.

“The International Women’s

Day 2022 theme, Changing Climates: Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow, recognises and celebrates the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are working to change the climate of gender equality and build a sustainable future,” he said.

“We’re excited to offer these scholarships for another year to help lift up local women and provide them the opportunity to

build their future and reach their goals.”

Applications close 5pm Sunday 13 February 2022, with the winners to be announced at an International Women’s Day lunch in March.

Fire In Derelict Tilligerry Plaza Building

FIRE broke out last week at the derelict Tilligerry Plaza building on Beatty Boulevard in the centre of Tanilba Bay. Fire crews, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and Police services from across Port Stephens responded to the fire which broke out shortly after 10am on Thursday.

contained to two abandoned lounges in the empty building.

Fire services were onsite for approximately 45 minutes.

The quick response to the incident ensured that the fire was contained, however further damage was reported to the internal roof of the structure, which is already in significant disrepair.

Business owners who operate from the premises across from the centre reported the fire, and CCTV footage from the area is under review to determine how the fire started.

Vanessa Katinic who works nearby said, “The building remains easily accessible, and people enter the building all the time, especially young kids.

“We are concerned that the additional damage to the roof may cause it to collapse.

“If anyone is inside the building at that time it could result in a tragic and avoidable accident.”

The centre has been derelict for almost fifteen years now and has been subject to multiple Planning Proposals during that time.

Most recently, in 2019, a 100 unit, $23 million seniors living development was proposed by owners Carseem Pty Ltd, a plan that received support throughout the community.

Council records show that the application was not lodged.

Local police have alerted the council on multiple occasions regarding the potential danger however the site remains open.

The sight not only remains an eyesore, but also a significant safety risk for anyone who decides to venture inside the unsecured building.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said Australia Day was the perfect opportunity to thank local groups and individuals for their service and generosity.

“There’s people in our community who go that little bit further, give that little bit extra and inspire all of us to make every day better, and the Port Stephens Annual Awards are our way of formally recognising their amazing contribution to our region,” Mayor Palmer said.

“2021 was another year of challenges, with lockdowns and border closures due to COVID-19, but through it all our community remained resilient.

“Each of our annual award recipients stand out as shining lights, whether it’s through donating their time to community programs, championing local sports, or raising environmental awareness.

“They’re fantastic role models for our community and it’s an honour to be able to recognise their service.”

Terrace Central Centre Manager Ben Robinson said, “Terrace Central is proud to be the principle sponsor of this year’s Australia Day events in Raymond Terrace – especially to see these incredible people recognised for what they contribute to our community,” Mr Robinson said.

Citizen of the Year – November Sheehan decided to do something positive for those that were isolated during the COVID-19 lockdowns by founding Heart Letter Pen, an online initiative created during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic to assist people feeling lonely, anxious and isolated.

November donates significant time to manage the group’s Facebook page, coordinate drop-off and collection of boxes across the local community, and individually check, sort and mail card batches.

Young Citizen of the Year – Brigid Douglas is a volunteer gymnastics coach at PCYC Port Stephens, generously volunteering an estimated 350 hours a year to support programs for young people.

Brigid has built wonderful relationships with her students and the community, and is

Brigid also helps with the club’s school holiday programs and works closely with NSW Police on the Fit for Life program.

Sportsgroup of the Year – The Clontarf Foundation helps to improve the education, discipline, life-skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.

The Foundation has helped to make a difference in the lives of young people in Port Stephens by running programs with students at Hunter River High and Irrawang High School.

Cultural Endeavour – Madeline Crockett gives back to her community by volunteering her time at the Twilight markets in Fingal Bay. Among her many duties, Madeline helps to organise signs and COVID-19 updates, filling market spots, advertising via social media and providing updates to the community.

Previously Madeline spent time volunteering to assist her fellow students with their school assignments.

Environmental Award – Leonie Bryson is the vice-president and a key member of Climate Action Port Stephens.

Leonie has been actively involved in educating the Port Stephens community about climate

change and sustainability and has worked on events such as School Strike for Climate.

Through her dedication and hard work, Leonie secured grant funding to install renewable street furniture in Raymond Terrace – known as a Smart Solar Bench – that uses energy from the sun to enable users to charge their phones and connect to Wi-Fi. Freeman of Port Stephens – Kevin Stokes is a founding member of the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens. A passionate advocate for the environment, Kevin has spent more than 36 years volunteering at the Gardens.

He has worked tirelessly to develop and maintain the Gardens’ traditions, its volunteer basis and its focus on displaying and conserving Australian plants.

Freeman of Port Stephens – John Nell former Councillor contributed 34 years to Port Stephens Council both as an East Ward Councillor and Mayor.

He is the second longest-serving Councillor on Port Stephens Council. John is passionate about the Port Stephens environment and was a longstanding member of many committees including the Marine Park Committee, Estuary Management

Committee and Tomaree Sports Council.

During his tenure, he was a strong advocate for the environment and oversaw improvements to Nelson Bay town centre, more shared paths and new sporting infrastructure.

Freeman of Port Stephens – Ken Jordan Ken Jordan was first elected to Port Stephens Council in 2004 and represented the West Ward community for 17 years.

He served as Deputy Mayor from 2011 to 2012 and was an active community group member.

Ken was passionate about creating greater job opportunities for local young people.

During his tenure, he helped to reshape the developer contributions plan to increase funding for local projects and was a strong advocate for the Men’s Shed movement locally.

He was also a passionate member of the Seaham Park & Wetlands Committee and West Ward Sports Council.

Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, “"We had a fantastic Australia Day at Raymond Terrace, welcoming new citizens and congratulating our annual award winners.

"The traditional welcome to country by Uncle John Ridgeway was well received by everyone in attendance, and an important reminder of who the traditional owners of Port Stephens are - the Worimi people.

"Meryl Swanson, our Federal Member of Parliament and Kate Washington, our State Member of Parliament, had important information for locals which was well received by all.

“We are lucky to have such engaging Members of Parliament who make themselves available to the community.

"After missing out on Australia Day in 2021, it was a triumphant return this year.

“Well done to Raymond Terrace Rotary, Raymond Terrace Lions, Raymond Terrace Mens' Shed and all those involved who made the day such a success,” he said.

John Nell told News Of The Area “I appreciate the gesture, it is nice to be recognised as a Freeman of Port Stephens,” he said.

Changed overnight traffic conditions on Nelson Bay Road at Salt Ash MOTORISTS are advised of changed overnight traffic conditions from this week on Nelson Bay Road at Salt Ash to carry out pavement widening work, line marking, asphalting and installing concrete barriers.

Work was scheduled to start from Thursday 27 January and be complete

by Monday 14 February, weather permitting.

To minimise the impact on motorists, work will be carried out at night from

6pm to 6am Sunday to Thursday.

Traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 60 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Covid Business Support Package Released BUSINESSES, workers and the performing arts across NSW are all set to benefit from a major financial support package of more than $1 billion to help those that have been hardest hit by the Omicron wave.

The package includes financial support for small businesses to buy rapid antigen tests (RATs) to help keep their workers safe and a new Small Business Support Program to assist businesses to help keep their workers employed.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said while case numbers are now declining, the NSW Government is determined to support those businesses that have been most affected during this wave of the pandemic.

“As part of the package,

we are introducing the Small Business Support Program to help support businesses that experienced the worst effects of the Omicron wave,” Mr Perrottet said.

“We are also providing support to business to help reimburse the cost of rapid antigen tests for their workers, extending the Commercial Landlord Hardship Grant and delivering additional funding for the performing arts sector.

“This targeted package provides support for businesses who experienced cashflow issues and the immediate economic impacts of the Omicron outbreak.

“NSW is tracking better than expected and confidence is returning.

“And as we did with earlier recoveries, we will come through this recent challenge

stronger than ever.

“We’ve got the backs of businesses, as we have throughout this entire pandemic.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the support package would provide a statewide response to the Omicron wave of the pandemic, targeting those businesses that need it the most.

“Our regions have felt the impacts of Omicron, and it’s critical we give them a helping hand to recover and get local economies humming again,” Mr Toole said.

“This package shows that the NSW Government continues to have the back of residents and businesses in the bush with practical measures to ensure they keep their workers safe and

businesses open.”

Treasurer Matt Kean said we know some businesses in NSW have faced challenges and it is vital we get them the support they need to stay afloat and keep their workers in jobs.

“As we continue to protect the health and safety of our community, we have to ensure our economy is resilient and our businesses are supported so they bounce back from this most recent phase of the pandemic,” Mr Kean said.

“The Small Business Support Program helps those businesses with annual turnover of between $75,000 and $50 million with a decline in turnover of at least 40 per cent by providing a payment covering up to 20 per cent of their weekly payroll.

“By ensuring businesses

hours on Saturdays.

“As a result, we are extending our hours of operation from three hours to five hours.

“Commencing Saturday 5 February, Raymond Terrace and Tomaree Libraries will now open from 9:00AM – 2:00PM. “The community

spoke, and we listened,” Kris said.

In the 2021 community satisfaction survey, more than 35 percent of the respondents had used the library service within the last twelve months.

thing- didn't drink to excess and there were no significant arrests linked to the day,” Superintendent Gillies said.

Minister for Police On 27 January, Raymond Terrace Police welcomed Deputy Premier and Minister for Police, The Hon Paul Toole MP to the station.

Deputy Premier Toole made time to meet local police, see the local facilities and discuss important local policing issues.

Mr Toole was also presented with the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District ‘Challenge Coin’.

Library Extends Opening Hours

“This package will help relieve some of the costs of small business including keeping workers safe, assist with cash flow and support small businesses to continue

programs/activities and increasing access to the library were identified as opportunities for improvement by respondents.

The opening hours for both libraries will now be 9:00am6:00pm from Monday to Friday with the Saturday hours extended from 9:00am12:00pm to 9:00am-2:00pm.

Both libraries offer large

collections of reading materials, free internet and WIFI-access and meeting rooms, alongside access to photocopying, scanning, printing and faxing services.

The Raymond Terrace Library is also home to a Pink Box free period dispenser for women and girls in need.

These chairs were left in an unsafe manner with sharp shards of plastic scattered across fields used for Little Athletics and other community programs.

Anyone with information is encouraged to report to the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District.

Marine Rescue NSW It was a busy afternoon at Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage on 28 January.

Earlier in the afternoon there was a report from a boater of an overturned blue/ white vessel on Bushy Island with an unknown number of persons on board.

As rescue vessel Lemon Tree 30 made its way to

the location, the vessel that was the cause of the response radioed that he had been stuck on rocks due to his engine stalling and had managed to restart the engine.

After returning to the Lemon Tree Passage boat ramp, he was met by the crew of Lemon Tree 30, who established that no person was injured and that the boat had suffered some minor hull damage.

Not long after, a call came in from a nine-metre cabin runabout which required assistance, with Lemon Tree 30 currently towing it back to safety.

Emergency Services Update

By Tara CAMPBELL IT’S time for the weekly emergency services update for Port Stephens.

Salt Ash Fire The Williamtown/ Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade received reporters at approximately 5:00PM on 28 January at about 2 km southwest of Oyster Cove Road, Salt Ash. With a size of 3ha, the Brigade was assisted by Tilligerry, Medowie, Anna Bay, Thornton and Raymond Terrace Brigades to ensure the blaze was contained and under control.

The crew returned the following morning with all three of its appliances to patrol the Sub Station fire.

Whilst on scene, crews from the brigade had a lesson in fire behaviour and intensity as well as area familiarisation along some of the fire trails on the way back to the station.

The fire was completely and safely extinguished by the crew.

Tilligerry Fire On the morning of 27 January, the Tilligerry Brigade responded to a fire in the old Bilo building.

The Small Business Support Program provides eligible businesses a lump sum payment of 20 percent of weekly payroll with a minimum payment of $500 per week and a maximum payment of $5,000 per week.

In addition, the existing Small Business Fees, Charges and RAT Rebate will be increased by 50 percent from the current $2,000 limit to $3,000 and employing businesses will be able to use the rebate to obtain RATs. This will support worker availability by helping reduce costs to small businesses and enabling healthy staff who have been exposed to COVID-19, but test negative, to return to work.

Deputy Premier visits Stockton

DEPUTY Premier Paul Toole visited Stockton Beach this week for a site inspection.

Joining local Council members, Mr Toole headed to the region to address coastal management, ensuring coordination between Newcastle City Council and the NSW Government regarding the ongoing coastal erosion problems and plans for Stockton.

Mr Declan Clausen, Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle, was pleased to welcome Mr Toole to the area to inspect the beach’s erosion first-hand.

“The City of Newcastle has been grateful for the support of Mr Toole’s predecessor, John Barilaro, who was instrumental in driving the NSW Government to support Council’s efforts to address the erosion crisis.

“Deputy Premier Toole’s continued leadership of the Deputy Premier’s Stockton Beach Taskforce will play a critical role in coordinating State agencies to ensure we can get sand back onto Stockton Beach,” Mr Clausen

said.

Mr Paul Toole now was Ministerial responsibility for the NSW Deputy Premier’s Stockton Beach Taskforce, which was established to ensure a coordinated approach to renourishing the beach.

Nuatali Nelmes, Lord Mayor of Newcastle, believes that this relationship between local council and state government is essential to ensure that the sand renourishment program is completed.

“As soon as Mr Toole took over from John Barilaro, I wrote to the Deputy Premier to express my strong desire to continue our great working

relationship with the NSW Government when it comes to addressing erosion at Stockton.

“The City of Newcastle has appreciated the coordination of this Taskforce by the Department of Regional New South Wales, and the strong funding commitments made by the former Deputy Premier, to both fund the necessary work towards the granting of a Mining License for offshore sand extraction, and the subsequent funding required for the offshore dredging of identified sand sources and the placement of this sand back on Stockton Beach,” Ms Nelmes said.

sand naturally moves north from Stockton Beach along the Stockton Bight each yearthe equivalent of 45 Olympic swimming pools full of sand.

With the Newcastle Harbour breakwaters and navigational channel blocking new sand moving from Nobbys Beach to Stockton and the waves moving sand north, Stockton Beach suffers erosion.

This is an urgent issue for

all stakeholders involved to ensure that Stockton’s natural beauty is not lost.

“Council needs support from the NSW Government to fund the necessary works towards the granting of a mining licence for offshore sand extraction, the subsequent funding required for the offshore dredging of sand, and the placement of this sand back on Stockton

Beach; this work is complex and can only occur with NSW Government support.

“This is the number one issue raised with me, and I know this continued support and connection to a state level will be welcomed by the community of Stockton.

“With the Deputy Premier’s ongoing support, we are confident that we will be able to restore and provide ongoing protection to the amenity of Stockton Beach,” Deputy Lord Mayor Clausen said.

STEM is certainly an area where women are underrepresented in the workforce.

Traditionally, science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) was the domain of men, however it is an area in which women have the opportunity to excel.

welcomed the Morrison Government's announcement of grants of up to $1 million and new scholarships to support women and girls to secure science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs.

Round four of the Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship (WISE) program is now open, with $13 million available to strengthen and expand projects that are driving lasting and systemic change by removing barriers to STEM

Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area, “I want to see even more girls and women across Port Stephens enter into these industries and I hope women across our community will consider applying for the scholarship.

The Bees Knees

THERE at least two apiarists in Tilligerry, both selling local honey to the public.

The coastal blossom provides a rich source of nectar for the foraging bees.

Clover on the Golf Club fairways, the paperbarks in the swampland and the various eucalypts are targeted by our buzzy little friends.

So are the heathland shrubs, one of which is a close relative of the plant that provides nectar for the famed 'Manuka' honey.

Many believe that the local leptospermum produces a more potent product than the New Zealand variety, however this honey can't be marketed as 'Manuka' due to copyright.

A small 250g jar of this famed honey sells for $40.

If you drive through Campvale, you will see a sign: 'Way 2 Bee.' This is the base for a very large honey producing enterprise and Tilligerry Men's Shed is playing a role in keeping it prosperous.

Already they have assembled some 3000 bee boxes from the imported flat packs with 1000 more in the pipeline.

The hives are mainly destined for rural areas west of the Great Divide where some of the best honey in

In fact, Mudgee has been known for years as the honey capital of the state.

At its home base, 'Way 2 Bee' breeds queen bees.

The bulk of the raw honey goes to a Melbourne wholesaler.

Women In Agribusiness

WOMEN are underrepresented in several areas of the workforce - one of which is agribusiness.

According to the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF), the future of farming in the region involves boosting the number of women in the industry and TAFE NSW is proudly skilling this new workforce.

NFF President Fiona Simson, the first female president in the organisation’s 40-year history, said their goal was to double the number of women in agriculture’s leadership ranks by 2030.

“Progress reports from our Diversity in Agriculture Leadership Program show we are well on the way to achieving this goal, if not knocking it out of the park,” Ms Simson said.

“The NFF has identified increasing the representation of women as key to achieving agriculture’s goal to be a $100 billion industry by 2030.

“We want to see more meaningful change toward gender diversity in the agricultural sector and we know that TAFE NSW is playing an integral role in

helping to attract female students and train the next generation of women in the industry.”

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Agriculture, Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) indicate women comprise only 31 percent of workers in agriculture.

TAFE NSW provides women with pathways into a range of agribusiness careers and already boasts a relatively high proportion of female enrolments in agribusiness courses (47 percent).

TAFE NSW graduate Brooke Hardinge of Medowie has completed a Certificate III in Performance Horse at TAFE NSW Taree and is now working as an Equine Vet Nurse at Newcastle Racecourse.

“I love my job and I encourage other women who are interested in pursuing a career in agribusiness to go for it.

“It would be really beneficial to the industry to have more women working in agribusiness,” said Brooke.

Irish Albert moves to Port Stephens

INTERNATIONAL performer Irish Albert has moved to Port Stephens.

Irish Albert is a traditional Irish comedian, singer and impersonator who has performed in a number of notable settings including the London Palladium, on

luxury cruise ships and in front of multiple members of royalty, presidents and prime ministers.

“Having stopped my touring, my daughter has finally coaxed me to move, and semi-retire here in Shoal Bay where she can keep an eye on me.

“I’m looking forward to

catching a fish, playing some golf and doing some concerts in the area,” Albert told News Of The Area.

Albert’s talents range from his Irish Blarney to impersonations including Mrs Brown, Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Charles.

“Many of our agricultural sectors across NSW are experiencing major skills shortages, so there is currently an opportunity to choose from a diverse range of careers.”

TAFE NSW offers basic skillsets in practical skills including shearing and tractor operations through to advanced farm management qualifications such as the Diploma of Agriculture.

Vet nursing and animal care, wool classing, winemaking, horticulture and landscaping, livestock farming, food production, and cropping are just some of the other careers women can choose from in a booming industry that needs to grow its workforce by 25 percent.

Adding Up The Impact Of Development On The Environment

PORT Stephens is fortunate to be home to the iconic koala however the species is in crisis with extinction forecast for 2050 unless drastic action is taken.

Koala Koalition EcoNetwork Port Stephens (KKEPS) was formed last year.

The organisation's primary goal is to protect and grow the koala population in Port Stephens; with one strategy being to identify legislative/policy restraints and contradictions to real protections, and lobby for improvement.

KKEPS has written a number of submissions against habitat destruction as group members believe the cumulative impacts on our environment has been largely ignored, at all levels of government.

There are a substantial number of existing and proposed hard rock quarries or extensions in our area, some of which require koala habitat removal, as well as many direct and indirect impacts on fauna and residents.

Caitlin Spiller told News Of The Area, “When you consider the cumulative impacts of these quarries along with the growth of sand mines and housing developments, both already approved and proposed, it paints a very sad picture for our koalas.

“The saying ‘death by 1000 cuts’ has long been used about our threatened species and it's never been more obvious here in Port Stephens, where the koala population has reduced as a direct result of approved clear fell developments.”

KKEPS’ consulting ecologist Georgina Cutler said, “The combined effect of multiple developments can have a significant effect on the wider regional environment resulting in habitat degradation and the fragmentation of key species populations.

“Direct impacts from quarries and building developments include the reduction of overall habitat available, noise disturbance, reduction in air quality, while further indirect impacts from supporting infrastructure and roads can result in the isolation of habitats and

species.

“Highways and increased traffic can pose a significant threat to wildlife by influencing both animal movements and mortality risk.

“The need for ecological connectivity is fundamental in conserving wildlife as it allows individuals to move among core habitat areas, providing stability to regional populations.

“It is inevitable that each new development requiring clear felling has implications to local species populations, therefore it is fundamental to assess the impact from a regional perspective,” Ms Cutler added.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment has recently published the Cumulative Impact Assessment Guidelines for State Significant Projects (2021), which states that ‘Cumulative impacts are a result of incremental, sustained and combined effects of human action and natural variations over time and can be both positive and negative’.

a single project or multiple projects in an area, and by the accumulation of effects from past, current and future activities as they arise.

‘These guidelines outline the new requirement of Cumulative Impact Assessment (CIA) at the strategic-level and sitespecific level of State Significant Projects.’

While KKEPS welcomes this new requirement, many local rock, sand and housing proposals have escaped its requirement - those that aren't State Significant Projects and those with Environmental Assessment Requirements issued before 1 October 2021, and for Environmental Impact

Statements received on or before 31 March 2022.

“For too long site specific mitigation measures have not taken into account past or future neighbouring developments.

“Essential to managing cumulative effects is the establishment of common goals and specific thresholds for acceptable impacts, coordinated across all relevant stakeholders.”

“Without this coordination and assessments it is difficult to demonstrate that while any single development may have a negligible impact, the accumulation of multiple developments within the same region may constitute

a major impact,” Ms Cutler warned.

KKEPS has welcomed the statement in the new Guidelines which reads ‘Managing cumulative impacts is a shared responsibility – involving all three levels of government working closely with industry and the community – and is a major factor in all government decision-making’.

“KKEPS is calling on Port Stephens Council to consider cumulative impacts in its planning instruments and require CIA’s at the local planning and consent level, before it's too late for koalas and other threatened species here,” Caitlin urged.

Surviving Natural Disasters Builds Resilience

NATURAL disasters are increasing with wild weather patterns leading to bushfires, storms and floods.

A national survey has revealed that over half of those surveyed said they wouldn’t cope well, or at all, if they experienced a natural disaster event in the next year.

Furthermore, almost one-third of people in high disaster risk areas believe their community was not prepared for future disasters.

The study also found that experiencing a disaster greatly influenced how prepared and confident people felt about the future, with 71% of disaster survivors confident their communities were prepared for the next disaster, compared with 51% of those who have never experienced one.

The survey highlights the need to better support communities to build preparedness and resilience strategies that can be drawn upon in times of disaster.

Australians who have lived through a natural disaster are more confident to face one again, but many feel ill-prepared and unable to cope if disaster were to strike within the next year, a national survey found.

The study found that experiencing a disaster greatly influenced how prepared and resilient people felt if disaster struck again.

When asked about future disasters, 67% said they would cope ‘well’ or ‘very well’, compared to 48% of those who had never experienced disaster.

But some respondents living in disaster-prone areas were completely unaware of their level of risk, and almost half of all respondents indicated they did not feel their community was prepared for a natural disaster.

Swan Bay Action Group

THE Swan Bay community has come together to create its first Swan Bay Action Group Committee.

The group has been founded as members of the community see a need for greater representation of the area when dealing with Council, Police and other organisations to assist them in meeting the needs of the community.

To join the group you must be either a resident or a property owner at Swan Bay. The committee comprises of Brian Bambach, Carl Digger, Sonia Latter, Michelle Shiraz Shetab, Diana Wollen and Stanley Wollen.

The committee is keen to welcome more people and any interested parties

Horrified by Helipad Proposal DEAR News Of The Area,

I AM horrified at the thought of a Helipad being allowed to operate beside the Anna Bay cemetery.

My only son Joshua is buried there and has been for the past ten years, I and my husband will also be buried there.

We chose this cemetery because of the tranquillity and natural bushland.

We have always been happy with the way the Council has taken good care and maintained the cemetery, even putting in a bench seat for me when I pointed out there wasn’t one down the back area.

This seat helped me greatly over the years where I could sit quietly and grieve, I hate to think how much disturbance these helicopters would cause in such a beautiful peaceful place.

So much so I feel strong enough about this that if the helipad was to go ahead, even as painfully stressful as it would be I would remove my son’s ashes and find a more suitable place of rest for my son and in the future my husband and myself.

If, however, the closest he has come to art appreciation is helping you hang the pictures in your home, then he may be attending for an entirely different reason.

Perhaps you could express your genuine curiosity in his new hobby and ask to see his sketches. You will then know what you are up against. I wouldn't be too concerned, though. Life models are very comfortable in their own skin and not in the least bit interested in retirees with fading eyesight.

You could always suggest that you will be his muse. At least it would give you an interesting topic of conversation at your next Book Club.

Property A Safe Investment

AS mum and dad investors seek to shore up their investments in a volatile stock market, property is being seen as a safe haven for investors.

This is driving the market high in areas such as Nelson Bay and even Pindimar.

Pete Wargent, co-founder of BuyersBuyers, Australia’s first national marketplace connecting homebuyers to buyer’s agents and lenders, stated, “On the other hand, the residential property market is significantly less volatile, as household income and job security are key drivers in the relative stability of the property market.

“While there was a good deal of uncertainty regarding employment in mid-2020 (before vaccines became available), confidence has returned.

“In total, 13.25 million Aussies are now gainfully

employed, which is the highest ever figure.

“Record job vacancies suggest that the employment figures are only going to increase from here, especially as the international borders reopen.

“And all of those people will have to live somewhere, and obviously, with strong employment readings, there are very few forced or distressed sales.”

The unemployment rate fell to 4.17 percent in December, before the Omicron wave of the pandemic took hold. .

“But overall, with job vacancies at extremely elevated levels, we’re confident of seeing full employment and an unemployment rate with a 3-handle sometime later in 2022.

Unfortunately, the annual concert was cancelled, with high numbers of student dancers in isolation after becoming Covid-19 close contacts at school.

“At the dress rehearsal and photograph day on 12 December you couldn’t wipe the smiles off the kids or the parents faces – they were so excited.

“Unfortunately, we made the difficult and heartbreaking decision to

postpone the concert the day before, for the safety and well-being of everyone,” Corynne said.

Not to be deterred, Corynne reports her students, from Tiny Dazzlers (aged 2-4 years) right up to Adult Ballet, Jazz and Tap classes are excited to be performing in 2022, and hope to perform their 2021 Concert on Sunday 13 February.

“We will also aim to have a mid-year Mini-Concert and End of Year Concert as well this year which will mean three concerts in 2022.

DESPITE the never-ending challenges of 2021, which included her studio being shut down for four months, Dance ‘n Dazzle Studio Principal Corynne Darcy tried to remain optimistic throughout.

Returning to classes in the second week of November, Dance ‘n’ Dazzle students immediately completed their LGTDA Tap Exams, followed

a fortnight later with their ATOD Classical Ballet, Jazz and National Character Exams.

“The exam results were outstanding and a credit to the students with a 100 percent pass rate,” Corynne Darcy.
