IN response to the massive flooding events over the past weeks on the eastern seaboard, 31 mayors and councillors from some of the nation’s most flood damaged regions have called on the government to do more to protect communities from tragic and costly extreme weather.

Mayors and councillors from five states released a joint statement responding to one of the worst extreme weather disasters in the nation’s history, calling for urgent action to protect their communities from worsening climate change.

The joint statement was signed by MidCoast Mayor Claire Pontin, and Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes; however neither the Mayor of Port Stephens or

Port Stephens Councillors were signatories to the statement.

The statement is calling on the Federal Government to: a. Lead the country in delivering on an ambitious emissions reduction target this decade, in partnership with state and local governments, to respond to accelerating climate change at the scale and pace required. b. Increase funding sources to councils for responding to climate impacts, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions, including providing a minimum of $200 million a year in the form of a disaster mitigation fund and an additional $200 million over four years for a local government climate response partnership. c. Invest in preparing before climate disasters strike and take responsibility for coordination of climate impact responses to ensure consistency and clearly delineated responsibilities between different

levels of government. d. Ensure all disaster response funding extends to all damaged assets and incorporates the principle of “betterment” to allow cities and communities to be rebuilt in a way that takes into account the inevitable future changes in climate and makes them more resilient. e. Establish a national body, or expand the remit of an existing one, to support research on adaptation and act as a centralised hub for upto-date climate change information.

Elly Bird, Councillor, Lismore City Council said, “If we’re to learn a lesson from the catastrophic flooding that we are now seeing happen in Australia every few years, it’s that we are severely underprepared for catastrophic events like this one.

“We urgently need to address the root cause of the heightened storm threat - climate change,” she

“This will assist her with a laptop, extra tuition where required, support and guidance over the next four years,” Sharon said.

Ebony wrote in her application that she has been in foster care since she was five years old.

“I lived in Newcastle for five years before being moved again in Year 5 to Corlette where I attended Tomaree Primary School.

“This was a difficult time but I have grown to love it here.

“Amongst adversity I was still able to achieve Dux of the school.

“There have been new challenges my siblings and I have had to overcome but I try to not let them affect my dedication to school.”

Ebony is now in a settled environment with lots of support.

“I can see I will achieve my goals of reaching Year 12 and gaining entry to university.

“Applying for the scholarship helps financially and benefits my learning as there is a clear path in my schooling that will support me to achieve excellence with the help of tutoring,” she said.

Employment Zones Reform

By Tara CAMPBELL THE Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) is currently undertaking a reform process to consolidate the twelve existing business and industrial land use zones into eight new zones (five employment zones, a mixed-use zone, a working waterfront zone and an enterprise zone).

The reforms are a recommendation of the NSW Productivity Commission and are intended to increase the flexibility of the zoning system by allowing for a greater range of land uses within each zone.

Following the addition of the new zones into the Standard Instrument – Principle Local Environmental Plan, DPIE is now working to convert the existing business and industrial zones to the new zones in local environmental plans.

In the recent Council meeting on 22 March 2022, the Port Stephens Council unanimously voted to adopt and enforce the reform.

The new employment and supporting zones are:

B1 Neighbourhood Centre and B2 Local Centre to E1 Local Centre: provides for a range of retail business, entertainment, community uses that serve a local area.

B3 Commercial Core to E2 Commercial Centre: large-scale commercial, retail, business and service development in strategic centres.

B5 Business Development and B7 Business Park to E3 Productivity Support: mix of industrial, commercial, creative, warehousing and emerging new industries that need larger floor space.

IN1 General Industrial and IN2 Light Industrial to E4 General Industrial: light and general industrial, warehousing uses providing important services like waste management and concrete batching.

B4 Mixed use to MU1 Mixed Use: mix of residential, commercial and industrial to provide a transition between zones and manage out of centre development.

IN4 Working Waterfront

to W4 Working Waterfront: provide suitable protections for employment areas adjacent to waterways.

The DPIE has not identified any land within Port Stephens to be converted to E5 or SP4 land.

Port Stephens Council Development Services Group Manager Steven Peart said that an audit process had been undertaken in regard to the plan.

“Council staff had the opportunity to undertake a detailed audit right across our LGA of all of the existing business, industrial and light industrial zones against what's being proposed here.

“There are only two parcels of land within Raymond Terrace that we proposed to amend as part of that, where the direct correlation between zones in the state planning reforms, we didn't feel as though it was necessarily appropriate and the state has supported that,” Mr Peart said.

Changes ahead at Bannisters

A PLAN is underway to see Bannisters Port Stephens take on a totally new look and feel.

While the property has been substantially changed over the decades and no longer looks its 50-plus years, the proposal will see big changes on the site and what it will deliver for tourism and the community.

The project consists of knocking down and rebuilding a series of high rise buildings on the site and is considered a State Significant Development.

Peter Bacon of Bannisters told News Of The Area, “We are currently modifying the already approved concept plans.

“The modification has been lodged with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.

“We don’t have a confirmed timeline as we have not started the Development Application

“When we do start the DA process, that is when we will be showcasing the proposed development,” he said.

The original DA was approved in 2011 and remains valid, leaving the community seriously concerned about several issues.

A Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) spokesperson said, “There is a major problem when developments that have been approved years ago suddenly reappear – not only have circumstances often changed, for example more traffic, more other

There have been other support packages announced for business in recent weeks, including support for cinemas delivered by the Federal Government.

Locally, Nelson Bay Cinema recently received a $60,000 grant from the Federal Government.

SMALL businesses hit hard by Covid-19 have been handed a further lifeline, with the Small Business Support Program extended to a new closing date of 29 April 2022.

The financial support package has assisted businesses, workers and the performing arts across NSW with cash flow and to continue trading.

Treasurer Matt Kean said the four-week extension was important to ensure small businesses have the resources they need to survive COVID-19 and bounce back.

Floodplain Risk Management

PORT Stephens Council is revising the Floodplain Risk Management Policy.

Following the recent flooding and the decision by the Government to declare Port Stephens as an area affected by Severe Weather and Flooding, this policy review comes at a practical time, with public exhibition

In January 2019 Council resolved to form a Committee composed of Councillors and Council staff to rewrite the Floodplain Risk Management Policy.

The Committee met on numerous occasions between mid-2019 and late 2020 to review the policy and other flood related documentation.

The revised Floodplain

Risk Management Policy has now been endorsed by the Council at the 22 March 2022 Ordinary Council Meeting and placed on Public Exhibition until 5pm Tuesday 19 April John Maretich, Port Stephens Council Asset Section Manager, says Council is committed to managing flooding across the Local Government Area using an

integrated risk management approach.

“The policy aims to systematically reduce the impact of flooding and flood liability on individual owners and reduce the private and public losses resulting from floods.

“It also recognises that flood prone land is a valued resource to the community, land holders and the

economy and these lands should not be sterilised by unnecessarily restricting appropriate development,” Mr Maretich said.

The Policy also aims to consider floodplain risk as early as possible through the use of flood information, classification of risk areas and cost-effective measures that address existing, future and continuing risks to ensure the avoidance, mitigation and minimisation of floodplain risk.

GOOD food and nutrition is sometimes a struggle for older people but it should not be a barrier to them ageing in peace in their own homes.

Newcastle Meals on Wheels has been in the hearts and homes of Novocastrians for the past 59 years.

Deliveries of nutritious meals started in Newcastle in 1963, delivering to seven elderly people.

Today the service delivers more than 5500 meals weekly to over 1200 people across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens.

A new service is launching on 6 June, with Tomaree Meals on Wheels becoming the tenth location serviced under the Newcastle Meals on Wheels banner.

Dr Shortage and DPA Reclassification Could Penalise Port Stephens

MANY regional areas in NSW are suffering from a General Practitioner (GP) shortage and it is taking locals longer to see a doctor.

Port Stephens is classified

as a Distribution Priority Area (DPA) region, a status that identifies areas where people don’t have enough access to doctors, based on the needs of the community.

DPA is calculated by comparing the actual level

of GP services provided to a GP catchment with the level of services the same community should receive if they were receiving benchmark level GP Services.

The benchmark(s) for each GP catchment are determined based on the composition of their communities, considering their demographics, including their

age, sex and Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA).

The DPA classification does not guarantee a doctor, but it allows medical practices in DPA catchments to recruit doctors who trained overseas.

It is a Federal Coalition Government initiative designed to address the maldistribution of the medical workforce and encourage doctors under location restrictions to work in regional, rural and remote communities.

If an area is assessed with lower than benchmark access to GP services, then they are given DPA status.

Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area that

Labor’s recent announcement to make the whole of the Hunter a DPA region will put Port Stephens at a disadvantage.

“It is disappointing that the Labor Federal opposition would seek to claim this as a 'win' for the community.

“All it does is reveal a complete lack of understanding of the Port Stephens community.

"Labor is late to the party on this issue and this reflects that they poorly understand the nature of rural health or the regions already with a DPA status - Port Stephens is already listed as DPA under the Federal Liberal Nationals Government.

“This is what DPA is for - smaller rural towns and

villages - not large regional cities like Newcastle.

“If Labor gives DPA to Newcastle, as they plan to, clinics in Port Stephens will be competing to employ the same doctors as the clinics in Newcastle, a larger city.

“Under the plans of the Liberal Nationals Government, the end result will be more access to GPs for families in our rapidly growing region.

“Being able to see a doctor in the timeframe that you need to, I know, is of paramount importance to the Port Stephens community.

“The health needs of our community are a priority for me, and I know this is a priority of the Federal Liberal Nationals Government,” said Ms Vitnell.

Weekly emergency services update

IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update .

Hazard Reduction Burn

Local Fire Brigades conducted a successful hazard reduction burn in Stoney Ridge Reserve in Soldiers Point.

Five hectares were included in the Low Intensity Hazard Reduction Burning which, due to a number of environmental factors, can only be conducted in March.

It was a successful burn which assisted members of a number of brigades to learn now and valuable skills about fire behaviour and intensity.

The Port Stephens Koala Hospital was involved in the operation, which was conducted with multiple RFS units and 37 RFS personnel.

Port Stephens Koala Hospital had rescuers on site in case of any emergencies, however there were no known koala casualties.

Pacific Highway Crashes

Over the past week there have been a number of motor vehicle accidents on the Pacific Highway.

Late afternoon on Sunday 27 March, Port Stephens SES responded with the Heavy

Rescue and Medium Rescue Vehicles to a serious crash on the Pacific Highway at Ferodale, along with eight accredited Rescue Operators to the scene.

On scene, an extrication plan was developed with NSW Ambulance Paramedics.

SES Rescue Operators used the edraulic combi tool, cutters and jaws of life (spreaders) to remove two doors, b-pillar and bottom sill to create sufficient space to safely remove the casualty.

Car into House

On Tuesday 22 March, Fire and Rescue Salamander Bay attended the scene of a car which had run into a house along Spinnaker Way in Corlette.

A 21-year-old male from Corlette was charged with mid-range PCA and other offences after losing control of the vehicle he was driving, colliding into a Corlette home causing significant structural damage to the home.

No persons were injured but the occupant of the home was considerably traumatised.

The driver was conveyed to Nelson Bay Police station where a breath analysis was conducted, providing a midrange reading.

The 21-year-old was charged with Mid-Range PCA, driving whilst suspended,

Police Update

THE Port Stephens Hunter Police District have had a big month, with a number of successful arrests in the area.

Raymond Terrace On Saturday 19 March, as a result of a serious assault at a Raymond Terrace at a licensed premises, a 28-year-old male from Albury was arrested at the scene and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was bail refused until his next court appearance.

The driver was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and transported by road ambulance to the John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

On Thursday 24 March police and emergency services attended an accident on the Pacific Highway at Tea Gardens, after reports of a crash involving two cars and a motorcycle.

Police have been told that an Isuzu D-Max utility travelling southbound collided with a motorcycle and a Toyota station wagon, both travelling northbound.

The male motorcyclist died at the scene.

The female driver of the Toyota was trapped by confinement and unfortunately died at the scene a short time later.

At 10:30pm Wednesday 23 March, a 42-year-old male from Merewether later identified as Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns, exited the Rock Roadhouse at North Arm Cove in his vehicle, travelling north in the southbound lanes of the Pacific Highway colliding with an oncoming vehicle, causing both vehicles to roll.

All parties were able to self-extricate.

The 42-year-old failed a roadside breath test and after being cleared by NSW Ambulance, was transported to Raymond Terrace Police Station and submitted to a Breath Analysis, returning a High Range reading

The 45-year-old victim from Maitland was transferred to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment.

Irrawang Arson On the evening of Sunday 20 March, Irrawang Public School had a number of classrooms set alight, and other damage throughout the school including damage to computers/electrical equipment, windows broken, and paint and other liquids scattered throughout the school grounds/classrooms.

Two males, fourteen and

fifteen years old, have each been charged with multiple offences.

Strike Force Cumulous As part of Strike Force CUMULOUS, Port Stephens Hunter Detectives have been investigating Service NSW and Services Australia (Centrelink) frauds committed by a 36-year-old Shoal Bay male.

On Tuesday 22 March, Port Stephens Hunter Property and Drug Unit, Proactive Crime Team with the assistance of General Duties executed a search warrant at his residence in Shoal Bay. During the warrant,

Police seized Cannabis plants, Cannabis, Methylamphetamine, an unauthorised pistol, nangs (nitrous oxide chargers) to fit the pistol, ammunition primers, a baton and numerous electronic devices.

All items were seized and conveyed to Nelson Bay Police Station.

As a result, the 36-yearold was charged with five Commonwealth Fraud Offences, eight State Fraud Offences, two drug offences and firearms offences.

The other occupant of the residence, a 58-year-old female, was charged with drug related offences

The man had his licence suspended and is to appear at court in April.

Richardson Road Crash

In the early hours of the morning on 25 March, NSW SES Port Stephens Unit along with Medowie Rural Fire Brigade and NSW Ambulance responded to a motor vehicle accident on Richardson Road, Campvale, where people were trapped.

Port Stephens SES responded with the Medium Rescue and Heavy Rescue Vehicles, with eight Rescue Operators to the scene.

The SES Rescue Operators used battery operated rescue tools including the jaws of life, spreaders and combi tool to undertake a side removal of the car and facilitate the removal of the patient.

SES Rescue Operators continued to support Ambulance Paramedics and established a landing zone for the aeromedical team.

Unfortunately, the helicopter was unable to land, and the patients were transferred via road ambulance.

Police are appealing for public help as they investigate a single-vehicle crash near Nelson Bay which has left the driver in a critical condition in hospital.

About 11.50pm on Thursday 24 March 2022, emergency services were called to Richardson Road, Salt Ash, following reports a Kia Sportage had left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, a 23-year-old man from Cooks Hill, was trapped in the vehicle by compression and was released from the vehicle by rescue personnel.

The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and later taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

As part of ongoing inquiries, investigators are seeking witnesses to the crash, or anyone with dashcam footage from vehicles travelling on Richardson Road between 11.00pm and 11.50pm on Thursday 24 March 2022.

Persons Trapped Motor Vehicle Accident

Two Charged Two people have been charged over an alleged stabbing in the Hunter earlier this month.

Just after 1.30am on Sunday 13 March 2022, emergency services were called to Donald Street, Nelson Bay, following reports of a brawl.

A short time later, officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended a home on Shoal Bay Road, where they located a 41-year-old man suffering a number of stab wounds to his back.

Officers assisted the man before he was treated by

NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, he has since been released.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a man and a woman – both aged 26 – at a home on Dungaree Way, Raymond Terrace, about 8.30am on Tuesday 22 March 2022.

They were both taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Both were refused bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court.

Sea and Tree Changers Drive Local Market Up

PORT Stephens has seen its share of new home owners who have left the big cities behind in the past two years.

The seachange and treechangers have pushed property prices up and will create positive economic impact within the community.

Many Australians would still love to live near the beach or with a water view despite recent flooding events, according to Pete Wargent, co-founder of Australia’s first national marketplace connecting property buyers to buyer’s agents, BuyersBuyers.

Mr Wargent said, “As we’ve seen in recent times, living near water can sometimes be too close for comfort when it comes to excessive rain and the resulting flooding.

“Recently towns such as Lismore and Gympie have experienced the full force of nature, with catastrophic flooding in some cases.”

Parts of Port Stephens and the MidCoast LGA’s were impacted by flooding.

“Sometimes owneroccupiers are prepared to buy in flood risk zones if they find a property which fits all of their other criteria, and if

they love the location.

“For most investors, the opportunity to snare a potential bargain is usually offset by the risk of stunted capital growth (as future buyers may see potential flooding risk), and because

the annual insurance premium when buying in a flood zone may be excessively high.

“For an interstate investor, in particular, there is less sleep at night factor if you own a property which you fear may be flooded at some point in the future.”

Doron Peleg, CEO of BuyersBuyers, said that water – particularly water views – continues to be a strong drawcard in Australian property.

Mr Peleg said, “Often properties with water views can appear to march to their own drum, performing well even when the wider market is lacklustre.

“A water view which can’t be built out is a genuine point of scarcity and desirability which tends to be reflected in long-term outperformance in Australia.”

This has been reflected in sales reaching some record highs in areas including Boat

Harbour and Shoal Bay. “We recently ran a market research report to decipher whether sea-change or treechange markets had outperformed in 2021 through the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated ‘race for space’, and the coastal markets recorded double the rate of growth of inland regional markets”.

That’s good news if you are planning to sell, but not such good news for those in the rental market.

“That’s not to say that treechange locations performed poorly – far from it, in many cases.

“Some inland markets have also benefited directly from regional moves away from the capital cities,” Mr Peleg said.

Overall, the results showed that regional properties had performed very well through the pandemic period.

But the coastal markets

recorded double the rate of capital growth of the inland regions, on average, suggesting that the water continues to be in favour with Australian property buyers.

Rebecca Dean and Tracey Blonsdale are local real estate agents, they told News Of The Area, “Regional property values increased at more than triple the rate of capital cities in the last quarter, and Port Stephens is amongst them.

“Last quarter we saw 61 percent of our buyers came from Sydney, both investors and owner occupiers.

“The rental market also saw a surge with many buyers looking to buy and move in now, and many investors moving back into their properties with supply not keeping up with the demand.

“Overall, buyers are seeing the benefits in a sea change, with lower cost of living and flexible work conditions postCovid.”

working on the review of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan to be incorporated into a Community Wellbeing Plan, a sand management plan for Birubi Point Aboriginal Place Tourism Interchange and Coastal Management Plan amongst others.

On the scorecard for key result measures, Port Stephens Council rated the seven key areas which underpin all Council activities.

These are given one of three scores: on track (target achieved or on track to be achieved), monitor (less than

five percent off the target) and off-track (more than five percent off the target).

Employee engagement, governance and risk management were classified as on track whilst service delivery and infrastructure backlog were rated under a monitor score.

Community satisfaction received an off-track score, with a 68 percent rating of community satisfaction and financial sustainability.

Port Stephens Council Six Month Progress Report

THE six-month progress report for the Port Stephens Council’s Delivery Program from July to December 2021 has been published.

The report provides an update on a number of key areas including progress of principal activities, updates of key priorities and the Council’s Delivery Program, alongside scorecards for service delivery, community satisfaction, employee engagement, governance, risk management, financial

sustainability and asset maintenance.

Wayne Wallis, Port Stephens Council’s General Manager, provided a foreword to the plan.

“We continue to ride the wave together with our community through the ongoing changes and challenges posed by COVID-19.

“I’m proud of what our Council team has achieved in the past six months and look forward to our journey together in the coming months and years,” Mr Wallis

said.

Highlights of the Council’s work include 82,529 library items loaned, 594 development applications worth $175.5 million, 5696 trees planted and an 83 percent employee engagement score for 2021.

In regards to community support, Mr Wallis said that as the level of government closest to the community, the Council continues to provide support where the community needs it most.

“These areas include online support for business, an additional $3 million of

‘Sniggerless Boundulations’, ‘Laissez Faire’ and ‘Intersection Control: Connected Works’, and will be showcased at a free event on April 3 at the Watt Space Gallery from 11:30am.

Director of Newcastle Writers Festival, Rosemarie Milsom, said that there is a strong contingent of local writers amongst the 110 guests for the festival who have been adaptable given the ever-changing circumstances.

“We’ve done everything we can to remain viable and we’ve become very good at dealing with whatever COVID has thrown at us,” Ms Milsom said.

Writers Vanessa Berry, Bastian Fox Phelan, Keri Glastonbury, Duncan McDuieRa and Kate Senior will be hosting a unique event entitled ‘Stockton Monuments and Memoryscapes: A Walking Tour’ on Friday 1 April from 10:00am-11:30am.

The writers will share historical and poetic insights about Stockton’s community monuments on a one-of-a-kind walking tour in Stockton.

Tickets for the tour are $12.50 and the event is weather dependent.

Newcastle Writers Festival will be held in the Civic precinct of Newcastle with 70 events, eight of which will be live streamed.

“We appreciate that people have different levels of comfort about Covid,” said Milsom.

As part of the event’s COVID-safe measures, audiences will be encouraged to wear masks and all guest writers, festival staff and volunteers will complete daily RATS before arriving at venues.

THE Newcastle Writers Festival is back after two years of pivoting and postponing.

The festival will hold its first in-person program since 2019, from 1 April to 3 April 2022, with a wealth of Australian and Hunter talent on display.

In amongst 70 events, both free and ticketed, are some familiar faces for Port Stephens locals.

Morgan Bell, a Port Stephens author of short fiction and visual poetry, will be launching her new poetry collection on Sunday 3 April.

Just when you thought this hugely popular true crime drama series was done and dusted, the unbelievable headlines and story involving high-rolling Sydney financial advisor Melissa Caddick have inspired a new instalment. “I don’t buy shares, I buy shoes,” boasts the infamous con woman in this new, high-octane two-part story. Alleged to have stolen more than $40 million from clients, friends and family, Caddick disappeared after ASIC raided her home, with her severed, runner-clad foot found washed up on a beach three months later. Voting With Dementia

WITH the Federal Election to be announced in the coming months, Dementia Australia is calling on people living with dementia, their families and carers to start the conversation now about voting.

Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM said capacity to vote is decision specific.

“Every person living with dementia has the right to vote,” Ms McCabe said.

“It is important that people living with dementia, their families and carers start the conversation now along with their doctor to decide together whether they want to vote so their status on the electoral roll can be amended if needed.

“It may be that someone needs support to vote, for example, being reminded to attend their local polling place on the right date or helping them arrange a postal vote or to attend an early voting centre.”

The Australian Electoral Commission provides a range of ‘Easy read guides’ which

can assist people living with dementia in simple, clear language on the voting process.

Meryl Swanson, Member for Paterson, told News Of The Area, “We know that we

will go to the polls in the next two months, so I would urge people living with dementia and their families to talk about whether they will vote.

“I personally understand the challenges of having a family member with dementia, and I know these conversations can be tricky,

but they are important.

“People can contact my office if they need help with postal voting and with contacting the Australian Electoral Commission,” she said.

If it is decided that someone is no longer capable of understanding the nature and significance of enrolment and voting, the appropriate form can be completed

and submitted through the Australian Electoral Commission to remove them from the electoral roll.

Ladies Probus Club enjoy High Tea

MEMBERS of the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club have been getting back into the swing of enjoying social outings.

Recently some of the ladies enjoyed a High Tea at Birubi Sands (Over 55s Lifestyle Village).

The High Tea was an innovation which the Committee offered to members to replace the usual free BBQ which is held annually in February.

Jill Stephenson told News Of The Area, “Much hilarity and enjoyment ensued at the High Tea - in fact, I don't think anyone attending wanted to leave.”

The ladies dressed for the occasion in beautiful dresses and fascinators.

The club has also held its AGM and Changeover event at Nelson Bay Bowling Club this month.

Mary Coombes was elected incoming President of Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club and is looking forward to a year of friendship and fellowship.

Port Stephens has several different Probus Clubs, some are mixed and others are not.

They each offer different things to retirees focused on activity, engagement, friendship and fun.

Community tries croquet

WITH the support of a Port Stephens Community Event Grant, Nelson Bay Croquet Club held a Come and Try Day on Sunday 20 March 2022.

On a bright, sunny day 65 people turned-up to explore the sport of croquet, once described as “an impossibly difficult exercise played to incomprehensible rules by venomous and tenacious people who have a tendency to swear under their breath”.

Lloyd, Sandy Tawa, Margaret Thompson, Susan Timbs and David Wilson provided a brief introduction to the playing of croquet to groups of participants, before they were unleashed on the courts to actually play a game.

A remarkable outcome, as the Club normally provides two to three hours of introductory lessons before new members commence playing croquet socially.

The lessons and games were followed by a sausage sizzle which provided an

Pothole Management

PORT Stephens council will prepare a report into an innovative approach for pothole management.

Raised in a notice of motion by newly elected Councillor Leah Anderson, Council will note that the process of identifying potholes can take time, be often relied upon by the general public to report them and can lead to dangerous potholes not being reported in a timely manner.

Upon Council noting the above, Cr Anderson asked the General Manager to prepare a report on the costs and benefits of implementing a system of cameras on garbage trucks to scan the roads as the trucks travel them, identify potholes, send their size and location back to a computer system, tag them based on their depth and size and send them off to the maintenance team for review and repair.

In 2019, Moreton Bay Regional Council implemented a program to provide a timely data collection method to facilitate improved and better targeted road maintenance and management.

The initiative involved fitting waste trucks with videoing technology and using the latest in artificial intelligence to identify potential issues with the road network across the LGA. Data is then provided back to Council’s Asset Management system as defect records

against the corresponding road records allowing for measured, timely and cost- effective management.

“I’ve raised this motion because I'm trying to think of some ways we can be a more proactive Council when it comes to pothole management,” Cr Anderson said.

The motion was seconded by Councillor Giacomo Arnott who has previously advocated for Council action on potholes.

“This motion is not asking for us to go out and purchase cameras tomorrow or to develop an AI system in the next week; it’s basically asking us to go out there and write a report to see what the costs and benefits are for doing something like this,” Cr Arnott said.

“I think a report will help the Council have a better understanding of what it would take and see how feasible it is in Port Stephens.

“Hopefully it will help us adopt a position where there will be fewer complaints about potholes because our crews will be out there knowing where they are,” Cr Arnott said.

Although the motion passed unanimously, some Council members expressed their scepticism of whether the approach could work.

“I’m happy to support this tonight but I’m highly doubtful that this will actually work,” Mayor Ryan Palmer said.

“I think it will just cost money in the end and end up with the same results, but I’m happy to support this and hopefully be proven wrong,” he said.

Dear Geoff, I remember being offered a photo frame made of elephant dung in Chiang Mai and haggling over the price, since it is poor form not to haggle in Thailand.

It just confuses the situation if you accept the price offered.

Anyway, I didn't actually want the frame, so I offered a ridiculously low price, and the salesperson was so offended that I felt instantly mortified at my actions and ended up buying the frame for double the original asking price.

At customs in Sydney Airport, the frame was confiscated and ripped apart by a customs officer whose name was probably something like Butch or Dwight.

What is the message of this tale? I don't know.

I've forgotten your question as I've now transported myself back to a time when life was simpler and the only worry I had was haggling over things I didn't want.

I think the point I wanted to make was that life is too short to be fretting about things you no longer want anyway.

$2.3 million boost for sports and recreation upgrades in Port Stephens

BETTER playing surfaces, a new clubhouse, a poolside playground and more are on the way for Port Stephens thanks to more than $2.3 million in funding from the NSW Government.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said Port Stephens Council has been successful in securing $640,000 in the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund Round 4 and $1,693,080 in the 2021-22 round of the Regional Sport Facility Fund.

“This is a significant investment in Port Stephens and a major win for our community,” Mayor Palmer said.

“Three projects have been fully funded under the Stronger Country Communities Fund Round 4, including $230,000 to improve

accessibility and remediate the playing surface at Salamander Bay Sports Complex. “$160,000 has been secured to build a new playground and shade sail at Lakeside Leisure Centre at Raymond Terrace, while a further $250,000 will go towards replacing the 50-yearold toilet block at Fingal Bay beach with a more accessible public amenities building.”

Two projects have been successful in receiving grants under the 2021-22 Regional Sport Facility Fund, with Council contributing $338,000 towards the upgrades.

They include $999,980 to build a contemporary and inclusive multipurpose facility at Yulong Oval in Medowie and $698,100 to transform Raymond Terrace’s Brandon Park into an active hub with a multi-sport court, upgraded lighting, seating and accessible amenities.

“Having infrastructure that supports an active and healthy lifestyle is an important part of ensuring the mental and physical wellbeing of residents, so I’d like to thank the NSW Government for helping us to deliver these key projects for our community,” Mayor Palmer said.

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club to host major regatta

NEWCASTLE Cruising Yacht Club is set to run another major regatta, Sail Port Stephens, from Monday 4 April through to Sunday 10 April, following the successful recent running of SailFest Newcastle.

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club was founded in 1996 by sailors from Lake Macquarie who wanted to go ocean sailing, with the Club’s marina built in Throsby Basin in Newcastle in 2005 and the Club licensed in 2010.

In 2015, the Club established its Youth Sailing Academy in Newcastle and in 2019 the Club was approached by the Bay Sailing Centre at Soldiers Point, Port Stephens, to take over the Centre.

Since 2019, the Club has established the Australian Certified Sailing Centre at

Soldiers Point.

The Centre has six new unsinkable training skiffs and runs a ‘Tackers Program’ for novice and junior sailors.

In February, the Centre ran the State Laser Masters Event on Port Stephens with 120 boats entered.

As part of SailFest, events were held in and around Newcastle Harbour, including the decades old ‘Cock-of-the-Harbour’ in Stockton, which has been run since 1834.

The TP52 Gold Cup was run with yachts including Sydney to Hobart Race multiple handicap winner ‘Ichi Ban’, ‘Smuggler’ with Tea Gardens’ Steve Taylor as navigator and local boat ‘Frantic’ with several Youth Academy graduate crew members, amongst others.

During Sail Port Stephens there will be a number of events and activities, including free ‘Try Sailing’ for kids at d’Albora Marina at Nelson Bay from 12pm on Saturday 9 April.

“200 yachts are now entered for Sail Port Stephens for inshore and offshore racing.

“There will be State Titles for offshore racing for the larger TP52’s and other yachts, State Titles for Taser dinghies at Salamander Bay and Far East 28 National Titles,” Paul O’Rourke, CEO of Newcastle

“This will be the biggest Sail Port Stephens ever with 120 keel boats and 100 beach based boats entered,” Mr O’Rouke said.

Sail Port Stephens will be the largest regatta in NSW and the third largest in Australia.

“This year there should be more than 2,500 competitors and supporters generating more than $3 million for the local area,” Mr O’Rouke said.

In 2021, there were 120 yachts in the event with more than 2,000 competitors and supporters and the event generated $2 million for the Port Stephens area. q

AMY Squires is a student at Tomaree High School in Year 10, she has been playing golf since she was eight-years-old and practices most days at Horizons Golf Resort.

She also has coaching sessions twice a week with Mark Ingrey.

Amy is a dedicated, high achieving student who is always happy to get involved in school activities and is an active member of the Tomaree High School Student Representative Council (SRC).

Amy recently teed off at the TPS Hunter Valley at Cypress Lakes Golf Course - a professional golf event where both women and men play together for the same

prize pool.

The juniors joined the field on Sunday playing alongside the professionals, with Amy taking out third place in the juniors event.

She is hoping to secure a scholarship this year with a prominent Sydney golf club to be able to play pennants for the club and receive funding for tournaments.

Amy Squires told News Of The Area, “I love playing golf with my dad, sister, uncles and grandpa.

“Golf brings our family together for some fun.

TOMAREE High School sports teams have recently competed at the Regional Swimming Championships, the Hunter Open Boys Soccer Knockout tournament and the Hunter Open Boys Basketball competitions.

The swimming team had some great success with both Ebony Nix and Anekah Sargeant making it through to the State Swimming Championships.

The school was represented by Hamish Clark, Maxx McMahon, Demi Portlock, Ebony Nix, Hannah Lowrie, Charlie Webb, Anekah Sargeant, Lexi Manning, Mitchell Lancaster, Campbell Stewart, Aedan Ryan and Cooper Limn.

Ebony and Anekah will be

competing in the open girls medley and the sixteen-years girls relay at the upcoming State Championships.

Joe-Ann Williams of Tomaree High School told News Of The Area, "Tomaree High School is proud to have students representing at such an elite level of swimming.”

At the Hunter Open Boys Soccer Knockout tournament, the Tomaree High School soccer team played against Francis Greenway High School, winning 12-5.

The boys will now face off in the next knockout round.

"The boys dominated the game by maintaining a steady performance throughout the entire game,” Tomaree High School coach Jack Taylor said.
