LAST week, Meryl Swanson MP, Member for Paterson held a roundtable with the Hon. Mark Coulton MP, Minister for Regional Health and representatives from Port Stephens medical practices who raised concerns about workloads of local GP's and the recruitment crisis in our region.

Earlier this year the Department of Health released its Distribution Priority Area's (DPA), a classification system that is intended to recognise locations with a shortage of medical practitioners.

The DPA does not consider tourist influxes common to our region, or the higher percentage of retirees and aged care facilities.

It predominantly relies on census data from 2016 that does not reflect the numbers today.

turning away more than 100 patients a day. “This is outrageous and demonstrates the systematic failings of the DPA model.

“We have a desperate need for more doctors in Port Stephens.

“Our region is not metropolitan and shouldn't be disadvantaged because of our proximity to Newcastle.

“Families and retiree's move to our area for the lifestyle and they need to be confident of accessing the local GP,” Ms Swanson said.

The round table hosted in Ms Swanson's office allowed local practice managers to speak candidly with the Minister about the needs of local patients and the demand on local doctors.

Representatives of local practices discussed the pressures each is currently under with Minister Coulton and Ms Swanson.

"It's important for everyone to be heard and for the Minister to understand the stresses on local practices.

“The message is clear; our region is in desperate need for support in recruiting local doctors who are keen to settle in the area.

“I'm confident the

Minister has heard the needs of locals and will I welcome his commitment to provide support to the struggling practices,” Ms Swanson said During the round table, it was revealed that local practices may have to start walking away from services to nursing homes as a result of the

recruitment crisis.

Currently this relieves pressure on the local hospital and reduces the lengthy travel residents would need to make when seeking medical attention.

Local practices also advised that the Tomaree Hospital often isn’t being staffed daily by a

visiting medical officer increasing pressures on local practices to serve as a proxy emergency room.

The Minister committed to investigate alternate incentive options and to provide more detail to the local stakeholders in due course.

Nelson Bay’s smart parking now live

PARKING in Nelson Bay just got quicker and easier with the new smart parking system now live.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it has been a 2-year process from consultation to launch.

“This is an exciting day for Nelson Bay. “The new integrated smart parking system is the first of its kind in the Hunter region and is designed to increase parking spaces, promote turnover and improve safety in the town centre.

“From a bright idea by our Independent Parking Panel in 2018 through to going live today, smart parking will make coming to the Bay even easier,” said Mayor Palmer.

Celebrate Australia Day at the pool

THE community is invited to cool off at a series of free family-friendly pool parties across Port Stephens to celebrate Australia Day on Tuesday 26 January 2021.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says while celebrations will look a little different, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

“Australia Day is a time to get together and celebrate everything that makes Port Stephens such an incredible place.

“While COVID-19 has meant we’ve had to make some

changes, we think it’s really important to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to celebrate.

“What better way to celebrate than with pool parties? We’re opening the gates to our pools at Tomaree, Tilligerry and Lakeside for a series of COVID Safe events.

“Australia Day is usually stinking hot, so it will be great for our community to cool off with a swim, enjoy a BBQ feed, listen to local performers and have some fun with giant pool games.

“At Tomaree, we’ll also be

holding a movie night for those who want to stay a little longer.

“Plus at Karuah, the RSL will be holding an event for the local community with a fresh produce competition and an auction with proceeds going to the local Rural Fire Service,” he said.

By Geoff WALKER WITH a second wave of Covid-19 sweeping the Northern Beaches in Sydney, Tilligerry businesses are very keen to exclude possible carriers.

The severe restrictions imposed during the initial scare do not apply, but clubs and tourist venues will require identification

verification before entry is permitted.

We checked with the RSL, Club Lemon Tree, the Motel and our Holiday Park and they all confirmed that any individual with a postcode from the Manly Warringah district listed in the lockdown area will not be given entry.

Tilligerry Habitat has gone one step further.

After people allegedly gave false addresses during the first lockdown, they are taking no chances this time.

The tourist centre has shut.

It will be unattended although residents and visitors can wander the boardwalks and nature trails looking for koalas and other native wildlife in the waterfront sanctuary.

IN what can only be seen as a cruel blow the Tanilba Bay Scouts property has been vandalised.

The Scouts will now have to fork out to have the damage to the fence repaired which is estimated to cost between $1,000-$1,500.

Tanilba Bay Scout Leader Ralph Francis told News Of The Area, “These funds would normally have gone towards developing and delivering programs for the local scouts.”

Scouts offer youth an opportunity to embark on One Program One Journey from aged 5 to age 26.

With Joeys graduating through, Cubs to Scouts then Rangers and finally as Venturers.

Along the way the program participants learn valuable life skills while building resilience and leadership.

In today’s Scouts, the youth design and develop programs supported by adults.

Youth take responsibility and can do almost anything through Scouting including learning to fly and piloting planes as Venturers.

Scouting uses social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual, skill

development to assist youth to grow into well adjusted adults that are engaged with their community.

Scouts also enjoy positive benefits when it comes to employment as employers know that Scouts have learnt valuable skills like problem solving and leadership and being reliable through fun activities.

The Tanilba Bay Scouts are actively seeking leaders and members to become involved in their programs.

They would also

appreciate any assistance available with the repairs for the vandalised fence.

Leaders do need to have a police check and hold a current safe working with children check as well as participating in some training however Ralph Francis believes that the rewards of volunteering as a Scout Leader are well worth the time and effort involved.

NSW Police are encouraging motorists to travel through the holiday season with safety at top of mind, towards a better 2021.

The state-wide Christmas and New Year road-safety operation started at midnight (12.01am on Thursday 24 December 2020) and concludes 11.59pm on Sunday 3 January 2021.

Double-demerit points are in force throughout the period for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.

NSW Police officers will also be targeting other high-risk driver behaviour,

including the Four Ds; drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliott, reminded the community to enjoy the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations but importantly to arrive at your destination safely.

“Traditionally, we see more people on the roads during the festive season, and COVID-19 restrictions permitting, this year will be no different with people holidaying closer to home. Drivers need to remember to be patient and allow extra travel time,” Mr Elliott said.

Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said road crashes have claimed the lives of 291 people in NSW so far this year and almost half of those fatalities involved speeding.

“It’s devastating that hundreds of families will celebrate Christmas without a loved one this year, and each one of those deaths was preventable,” Minister Constance said.

“The impact is massive for so many more people, with more than 11,000 injured in road crashes in 2019 alone.

“Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to travel, don’t speed, drive to the conditions, wear your seatbelt, avoid distractions, make sure

you’re well rested and if you’ve been drinking or have taken drugs, don’t drive.”

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole, said 179 of those killed on NSW roads so far this year died as a result of crashes on country roads.

“Country people make up only a third of NSW’s population but last year deaths on country roads made up two thirds of our road toll,” Minister Toole said.

“We are doing all we can to make the roads safer, however road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“We are asking people to plan ahead, put the phone away, buckle up, slow down, take regular breaks and enjoy our roads safely this summer holiday,” he said.

communications failure now has the Police Property Section telling us that RAF Park “is not known”.

The first thing the community heard about the new station siting was when the police minister, flanked by senior officers, made the announcement outside the currently rented station site in Lemon Tree Passage.

They had just earmarked some $500,000 of the $1,500,000 budget in purchasing an old house in LemonTree Passage which would be demolished for the new station.

Ah, Date Night.

What sadist came up with a concept where people who have been married for decades need to go out and pretend they’ve just met. It is doomed to fail.

The very concept of Date Night, where two people go out to forget their responsibilities, their children and their mortgage to “enjoy themselves” (as quoted in the Cambridge Dictionary no less) seems to insinuate that nonDate Nights are not pleasurable at all.

Going on a date is smoke and mirrors, anticipatory stuff. You date when you are getting to know each other. You don’t date when you’ve already been intimately exposed to every eccentricity, every habit, every political view, hell, let’s be honest here, every orifice of the person sitting opposite you. You not only know your dining partner’s hobbies and interests, you know what they look like slumped over a plastic chair in the shower covered in their own vomit.

You know what they feel and sound like when they bite your arm and swear like a trooper when giving birth because lavender oil and deep breathing just doesn’t cut it. You know what they smell like after you’ve roughed it together on a six-week camping trip. You have a lifetime of bonding experiences, so revel in the good, try to erase the bad, and don’t think for one moment that a platter of overpriced Warrigal greens, red wine or an arthouse flick once a month will make one iota of difference.

Grahamstown Road upgrades and closure GRAHAMSTOWN Road will be closed from Monday 11 January 2021 for 7 weeks (weather permitting) to carry out essential road safety upgrades between Richardson Road and Wade Close.

The works have been funded by the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program and will include widening of shoulders along this section to improve the road condition and safety.

Detours will be in place through Campvale and along Medowie Road to allow workers to complete the upgrade faster and more safely.

Crew will be on site from Monday 4 January 2021 preparing for works to commence

12 Paddlers of Christmas - Annual Santa SUP event brings squad of Santa Clauses to Fingal Bay

By Doug CONNOR GREY skies didn’t dampen the spirits of 12 intrepid paddlers in Port Stephens last week, as the annual SUP Newcastle Santa SUP came to Fingal Bay. Paddlers traded their wetsuits for the famous red of Father Christmas and hit the water to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, and the year that was.

Routinely held at Newcastle’s Dixon Park Beach, unfavourable wind and weather conditions saw the event moved to Fingal.

“Of course the Southerly got us as always,” Dylan Henry, founder of SUP Newcastle, told News Of The Area. .

“We didn’t get as many as in previous years, with Covid-19 and with the weather deterring a few people.”

Dylan said the Santa SUP was a good opportunity to bring local stand up paddle board riders together.

“It was great. For a rainy, southerly day to have 12 on the water we were pretty pleased,” he said.

“That was the fifth or sixth year that we have done it and it is just a chance to get together before the holiday period, go surfing and have a good time.”

Locals won't have long to wait for more SUP action, with the Port Stephens SUP Weekend expected to take place in the area from March 12 to March 14, 2021.

The SUP surfing element of the weekend will be run at One Mile, Birubi or Fingal, with the technical section possibly at Fingal and the long distance event at Shoal Bay.

Raymond Terrace athletes contest two State Championships

WITH COVID-19 putting an early stop to athletics competitions in early March and a delayed start to the current season, there was a feeling of a return to some sort of normalcy with two recent NSW Championships.

Usually held in September, the NSW All Schools Championships, for high school students aged from 12 to 19 years of age, is this year’s only state-wide junior athletics competition since COVID’s arrival.

from previous years which were obvious from the time the athletes and spectators (just 2 per athlete) scanned a QR code on entry to the stadium.

It was followed by the now accepted ritual of hand sanitiser stations; the athlete check-in room being limited to three male and three female athletes at a time, athletes social distancing during field events and preparing for track events, spectators required to remain seated during competition, food and refreshments only available for a specified time each day, competition merchandise only

available online; and of course COVID-Safe Marshalls on duty.

These certainly changed the atmosphere in the usually crowded grandstand, but the quality of competition was still of a high standard and athletes from their various schools enjoyed being able to catch up with their many athletics friends.

Three Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre athletes who competed for their high schools all came home with personal best results.

Some events had over 45 competitors.

Cody Hancock, 15 years, brought home two Silver medals in the Triple Jump with a 50cm personal best (PB) jump of 12.63m and Long Jump with a 20cm PB of 6.36m; and Bronze in Pole Vault with 2.3m at his first ever attempt in the event.

His other results were 100m Hurdles – 7th, Discus 10th, 100m – 20th (pb of 11.68 with the Gold medal winner finishing with 10.84).

Ebony Newton, 15 years, won Bronze in the 200m, finished 4th in the 100m with a PB and in the 16years 100m hurdles, also finished 4th.

Dixie Conlon, 14 years, results were 5th in Long Jump with a PB of 4.55m, 6th Triple Jump, 7th 80m Hurdles, 12th 100m with a PB of 13.89, 14th 200m with a PB of 29.10.

Talented Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre thrower Morgan Clifford recently contested these three events and came home with three Gold medals.

In the 40 years category, Morgan threw weights that most of us would struggle, or even find impossible, to pick up. With a 7.26kg Shot Put, he reached a distance of 10.24m, in the 16kg Weight Throw, in the final of his 6 throws, he reached his best distance of 8.7m.

But his biggest challenge was the 25kg Super Weight Throw which he threw an amazing distance of 5.57m.

All of these athletes are to be congratulated for their determination, resilience and

exceptional efforts!

Round 8 Round Up - Stockton and Northern Districts Cricket Club

ROUND 8 saw the Stockton and Northern Districts Cricket Club bring 2020 to a close with matches against Wallsend, in what were anticipated to be closely fought matches across all four grades with both clubs in the top four of the club championship.

In first grade at Lynn Oval, Stockton and Northern Districts won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that kept the bowlers interested all day but also rewarded application with the bat.

The Seagulls found hard in the first session to be 2 for 85 at lunch and in a strong position but regular wickets after lunch and some fine bowling from the Wallsend seamers saw the last wicket fall at 174.

Skipper Nick Foster top scored with 67.

In response, a fired up Tom O'Neill decimated the Wallsend top order with an

excellent spell of fast bowling to leave the visitors reeling at 6 for 52 at the close of day one.

On day two Wallsend made the Stockton and Northern Districts bowlers work hard for the win but eventually the seagulls got the four required wickets to bowl Wallsend out for 135 to claim a crucial win and go to the christmas break in the top four. Tom O'Neill claimed another five wicket haul with 5 for 46.

Second Grade started their clash strongly by posting a very competitive 214 at George Farley Oval against a strong Wallsend team.

Laurence Kelly led the way again with the bat with a polished 77.

In response, Wallsend were 1 for 24 at the close of day one and the match evenly poised.

Unfortunately the rain had the final say with week two washed out and the points shared.

Second grade goes into the Christmas break in first place.

The Third grade fixture at Corroba Oval was in the balance after day one after Wallsend batted the whole day for 231.

The Seagulls toiled hard in batting friendly conditions, with Tyler McInnes again leading the way with the ball taking 4 for 42.

Third Grade are within touching distance of the top four, sitting in 6th at the break.

Fourth grade were well and truly in the box seat after declaring at 9 for 273 after 49 overs and having Wallsend 2 for 25 at the end of the first day's play.

An amazing performance

by Alex Ward who scored 201 not out, in what was the highlight of the day and quite possibly the season.

Alex single handedly took the game away from Wallsend with 30 fours and 6 sixes in a brutal display.

Once again the rain ruined what was bound to be a seagulls victory and the points were shared.

Mayor’s New Year’s message AS we come to the end of another year — a year like no other — it’s a great time to look back.

2020 has been a challenge to say the least, with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting us all in so many ways.

Despite this, I’m proud that we’ve managed to keep our community spirit alive and well. A great example of this is the Have A Yarn project, which saw hundreds of people contributing to beautiful knitted artworks which now decorate our communities.

My hope for 2021 is that we can carry this wonderful community spirit, which Port Stephens is known for, through with us.

PORT Stephens athletes have performed well at the Hunter Zone Twilight Competition at the new Maitland Athletics Track.

Port Stephens Athletics Club President Bob Walkley said the local group of athletes competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put and Discus.

“The athletes from our club were

Aileesha Oudshorn, Mia Macdonald, Zara Shaw, Chloe Shaw, Searni Thorning and Jock Gilchrist.

“The two girls that I coach, Aileesha and Mia did really well both winning their respective 100 and 200m races and posting personal bests in these events and both won their long jump events.

“Zara Shaw came second in the High Jump 1.30m.”
